I usually don't say very negative things about professors...but she was very unorganized, doesn't know the material, and is rude to students.
Very unorganized, unclear with her requirements, and the syllabus kept changing.
She is completey unorganized and extremely difficult to understand. She also seems to get lots in her own sentences a lot. This semester, she's been finishing her own graduate work, so she's basically putting off class-related stuff to get her own things done ... very unprofessional.
She is very understanding of personal issues and I really liked the readings she selected. I had whiny classmates.
Tests are harder than papers. In-class activities easy. Meets with students, but expects attendance.

Worst professor I've ever had. She doesn't know what she's talking about and puts her own problems first. DON'T EVER TAKE HER CLASS AS A FRESHMAN! She just assumed I wasn't going to be able to do the (easy) classwork because I was a freshman...talk about having faith in your students. She was horrible and very STUPID.
Very confusing and unintelligent. Hard grader. Don't tale her, one of the worst professors I've ever had.
The worst professor I've ever had at this university. She's much better suited for a kindergarten class than she is for college courses.
Very good prof. I enjoyed some of the topics but I wish we would have more discussion. Lots of movies. Inconsistent with grading.
I agree with the statement that she could be a kindergarten teacher, but if you want to pass this class easily, take her. She kinda rambles on, but she's funny to watch cuz she wiggles all about and her hair flies everywhere. You can miss this class a fair amount and get a good grade.
This is my second semester taking her and she has improved (with structure and clarity). I think that each course she teaches has a different feel/tone to it. She seems to try to relate or at least get our opinions.
exams were hard multiple choice/essay, but overall she is a nice lady and is easy to get along with.
Nybroten tends to sit at the front of the class and read off a powerpoint presentation, which makes for a pretty boring class. She doesn't give her students a lot of credit and tends to treat them like 1st graders. Very nice lady, however. Tests aren't too bad and grades papers decently.
The teacher was nice and fairly easy, but her lectures mainly consisted of her reading off of a powerpoint, so class did get boring and repeditive at times. Read the readings and study for tests. Overall easy class and nice professor.
Overall okay teacher; however, I like the subject. There is a beast of a group project with a 6 pg. indiv. paper. Side note, she doesn't listen well at all. It's comical almost. Someone will make a comment in class and she will completely misinterpret what they said and go off on a tangent. Ridiculous. But nice prof. I would recommend.
Prof. Nybroten is good. Pretty boring class cuz she goes off of powerpoints but when we have discussions it can be better. puts all notes on D2L. gives study guide for tests so follow those and their easy. big group project at end but not bad. watch some movies.. actually interesting. lets us out early quite a bit. overall easy class good prof.
Prof. Nybroten is NOT my ideal professor. She pretty much made PowerPoints that she read during class, and showed us videos and brought in some presenters. Midterm, 10-15 pg paper or 30-slide PowerPoint, a few response papers (to a book and some videos). I read the textbook twice all semester. Didn't learn much - felt like I was wasting my time.
Dr. Nybroten is a very good professor. The textbook reading can be a little much, but if you go to class the subject material makes absolute sense. The class discussions are interesting. You have a big group project at the end of the semester that involves a 6+ page paper and presentation, but it is a rewarding experience. Recommended.
This was my favorite class. She is very interesting.
I enjoyed her class because she made it interesting. I really liked hearing her stories about her time in Texas and how it related to certain sociological principles we discussed. Go to class and read! Group project at the end. She's very helpful.
Pretty great teacher with awesome class. Has a lot of great stories and really knows what she is talking about. The class is rather easy and fun because you watch a couple cool videos. If you try the project at the end is really great too. great professor would definitely recommend to others in the future
She was my favorite prof first year. Very interesting and helpful.
This was definitely an easy class! The tests are very short and easy and the final project is not that bad either as long as you get a good group. She gives out study guides for each test, so as long as you do those, you will get an A even if you never read the book. The only complaint I had about her is that she takes FOREVER to grade things.
At first I wasn't sure what to think of Professor Nybroten, but as the year went on I fell in love with her teaching style. She incorporates lots of her life experience as a sociologist into her teachings, which really make the theories and concepts to life. Easy tests and interesting content. The final project isn't bad either! Awesome prof!
Professor Nybroten takes forever to grade things. It's an easy A if you do the study guides she provides you. She relates sociology to everyday life and this is very helpful. Final project isn't bad either.
Took for a summer class online, there is a lot of stuff due everyday but most of it is pretty easy. This is a good class to take, its very interesting and I learned quite a bit.Its pretty easy material but if you take it in a crammed summer session you will have to do homework about 2 hours a night or so.Even though online prof. seemed really nice.
Very disorganized, she mostly talks about her life. Rarely did we learn anything not related to her life. I was forced to check D2L and my syllabus and my email just to make sure I didn't have something due the next day. She still made up assignments on a whim.
I did not want to take a ‘family’ class, but it fit my schedule and was the right GE. I did find the class more interesting than I had expected. My girl friend took the class and liked it more, which I figured. Some stuff seems pretty common sense, but some there were some new things. It was an ok class/ok professor
She's one of my favorite professors. I've enjoyed both classes I had with her. Very helpful.
I had her for a soc of education. I loved the class, it was very interesting. She expected a lot of hard work from students and attendence, but is a very fair grader and I liked her a lot.
This class was boring, and very difficult. If you didn't pay attention to every detail you were screwed. Tests were very hard, and your expected to do a TON of readings. I would not take this class unless you have a weird love for sociology and reading boring chapters.
Found this class interesting. Great professor. Tests may be more difficult than others. Liked talking in groups.
Interesting class. You do need to have to know a lot for the tests, but she is nice .
I love sociology and Kathleen means well. But I have to say I did get very bored in this class. Her voice gets very annoying to listen to and the subject matter would have been more interesting presented by a different professor. Exams and assignments are straight forward and fair. Somedays were fun, but would suggest a different prof.
I took this course online and it was very disorganized!! When you get the syllabus you expect to have quizzes on certain days and times but she was all over the place! The work wasn't hard just very disappointed in how unorganized it was. its hard to get that much work done in a short time like that.
Thanks to Kathleen I fell in love sociology. She loves the material and makes you interested as well. I thought the class was very easy and easy to understand. After taking this class I decided to minor in Soc. Great professor!
Fun class with interesting topics, but the lectures are all over the place and a lot of time is focused on discussion. There's also some big assignments that sneak up on you because she won't mention them until they're due that day.
Lectures were very dry and boring if you are not fully engaged. If you take notes a lot, you will have plenty to write. However, tests cover much more than just lectures. Tests were difficult and she is a very tough grader on written assignments. Don't take this class if you're expecting "an easy A".
I usually have no issues with professors, but Kathleen was not a good one. Tests were ridiculously hard. Even if you study the book and lecture notes, there's a lot on the tests that were never covered. Very tough grader for written assignments. Do not take her if you are just looking to take a gen. ed. Take someone else or another course!
I took SOC 101 as an honors class, so my experience was different. Smaller class, higher expectations, etc. Sometimes her lectures were a little unclear, but if you told her and wanted a better explanation, she'd help you understand it. I used the book once. There wasn't a cumulative final but there was a final project and participation counted.
Nybroten's lectures are confusing. Her slides never make sense and she is always flipping back and forth between all of them, never fully explaining anything. She then makes her tests hard and on material for the most part she has never taught. Study guides are no use either, not an indication of what will be on the exam. Would not suggest her!!!!!

I love Dr. Nybroten. She teaches so well, concise ppt's and she uploads them on D2L. Got an A in her class!
Kathleen is hit-or-miss for me. She is charismatic and fun, but is unclear in her grading and expectations. She is a great person but lecture is often unorganized and chaotic. Lots of papers especially near the end of the class; no tests; she grades tough. Content was fascinating. Not an easy A but an enjoyable class and professor overall.
This was an interesting class for me, but it was frustrating as well. Grades are largely based on four multiple-choice tests given over the semester. This may sound nice, but the questions are oddly specific and easy to get wrong. I wish she would've had short-answer to show what we actually learned. Overall, she is still super nice and passionate.
Very down to earth professor, yet professional! She was very easy to speak to about concerns and difficulties, and she was really organized and easy to follow in lecture.
This class was pretty easy and also interesting. We had three tests and some in class assignments but that was it. The tests were not hard as long as you went over the review sheet she gives out. I really enjoyed her lectures, she keeps them interesting and very much likes what she teaches. Overall a pretty good teacher.
She was a great teacher and you could tell she really liked her job, but she was very lecture heavy. Lot's of reading as well. But if you do the readings the tests can be fairly easy.
The lectures don't make any sense and are very boring. Class activities are pointless. She takes points off of your projects and doesn't explain why. Her tests are nothing like the study guides. You're better off with a different professor.
Dr. Nybroten lectures are ok, but this class seems to go on for days. She takes a month to give back a scantron test and tough grader on short answer questions. She never gives out A's for homework, but there aren't many homework assignments. This class is ok, but if you can take it with another professor, I would recommend that.
She is a very fun professor! The majority of her classes are lectures and she goes through the slides a bit fast. She has readings throughout the course for you to ready but they are very simple. The test are also very easy as long as you do the readings and pay attention in class. If you have any questions she is very easy to get a hold of.
This class is very lecture heavy and has a lot of reading. The lectures are fairly interesting but some of it is common sense which makes them pretty boring. You can tell she is passionate about she teaches and is knowledgable about it but is pretty boring to learn from. She is also a pretty tough grader on short answer questions.
Honestly an easy class. If you genuinely listen to her lectures, youll pass with an A without reading the textbook.
Professor is somewhat nice. She was never ready for class and always had an excuse every week, but with that she extended many due dates. Usually responds to email late as well. Very lenient on grading. If you want an easy class, I recommend her! If you want to learn, this class wont be that helpful.
Wasn't a huge fan of Nybroten. Class felt like it was never going to end, her voice gave me a bit of a headache, and I finished the class feeling like I hardly learned anything. Although you're going to want to- don't skip this class. Isn't hard if you show up, take notes, and study for the tests.
Her tests are hard, more in depth than just what she goes over in lecture. I ended up needing to look at the terms in the textbook to know all the material for the tests. Your grade is based on only the tests pretty much, so if you do badly on a test your grade will drop and be hard to get back up.
This class was not hard, but she is a tough grader. She is very unorganized and does not grade fast at all. This class had 6, 5 point assignments and 3 exams for the whole semester. You won't know how you're doing in the class until it's over. Not a hard class though
Easiest class I've taken in college so far. Listening to her talk is awful though. She seems to care, but she doesn't always know what she's talking about. Especially when it comes to the unit on the LGBT+ community. I'm LGBT+ and I noticed a bunch of stuff that she completely messed up. She wasn't hateful, just kind of misinformed.
She was mediocre at best, very lecture strong test but the lectures didnt teach you anything at all. The whole course felt like church and if youre not a liberal good luck because this woman can not see the world any other way than her way maybe thats why she teaches sociology and hates her life
There's no point in coming to her class because her lectures only serve as key ideas for the exams and you'll only learn by reading the textbook. That's not bad, but it feels like a waste of time being in there since you're forced to come since she doesn't add the lectures online. Not the easiest but not the worst.
Not only was she the MOST disorganized instructor I have ever had, but her assignments were also thoughtless, she was consistently late to class, and was the only prof I had during COVID that couldn't follow her revised syllabus, despite teaching this class online before. This class was a WASTE OF MONEY but it was a requirement I needed to fill.
The most unorganized professor Ive ever seen at the University. Her assignments are pointless and dont have much to do with the lectures. Her lecture powerpoints are all over the place and dont really make sense. Its hard to know what going to be on the test because her lectures are so confusing and boring. Will never take again.
The most unorganized professor I have ever had. I do not recommend being a family studies minor because she is in charge of it and this course is required for it. The class was an easy A, but I feel like I learned nothing because I just taught myself.
Dr. Nybroten is a lovely person and cares greatly about what she teaches, but she is highly disorganized. Materials for class have not been posted on time half the time this semester, and she is impossible to get a hold of. It is an easy and interesting class, I just wish I could have taken it with someone more organized.
She is very nice. She dealt with some family issues this semester and couldnt post content for the class but pushed back all the due dates for the assignments and even took off some quizzes and discussions. Very fair teacher and under stable as well.
Shes the most unorganized professor on campus and you can never get ahold of her at anytime. She also isnt very understanding at all and her lectures are some of the worst I have sat through
Kathleen is definitely unorganized and doesnt grade stuff in a timely manner. She reciprocates this though and lets you turn things in whenever as well. This is a seminar, not a lecture, so every class is just discussion. There is no syllabus schedule, and we got thrown 2 papers during finals. No clear grading criteria, and grades harshly
I am a senior in college and she, by far, is one of the worst professors I have ever had. She is SO unorganized and throws assignments and papers at you randomly. There is no clear grading criteria or schedule outline. You have to guess when things are due most of the time and she does not communicate at all about what is expected of you.
Dr. Nybroten is a nice person, but objectively a bad professor for my class. She is --highly-- disorganized, and this shows through the lectures, homework, and PowerPoint presentations. Oftentimes we'd zoom through information in the last part of the class because of poor time management. Not the worse class to take, but there are certainly better.
She is the worst professor I have ever had in my college career. She does not grade anything on time, does not put up class material in time, but expects you to be on top of all the material. She Is SO UNORGANIZED, I want her to be fired.
Nybroten is a great person but not a great professor. She is super disorganized and it took her multiple weeks to put anything on canvas, including the syllabus. Throughout the semester she also put up assignment only 3 days before they were due. She is a very sweet lady but not a very engaging lecturer
I actually took this class for Sociology 410 (Education). Kathleen absolutely loves to hear herself talk--we could've had a lot more engaging and meaningful work in this course if it was a seminar. She is one of the most chaotic and unprepared professors I've ever had. This is the first course I have ever taken with her, and will be the last.
I took Dr. Nybroten for Sociology 410. I'm embarrassed to even say I took this class. She is one of the most condescending and unorganized professors at UWEC. It's difficult because the Sociology department here is so great, but professors like her can just ruin a department. She should work in policy or the city rather than in teaching.
Dr. Nybroten is hands down one of the worst professors I have ever had. She is extremely disorganized and inconsistent with putting things on Canvas, including assignment grades. She cancelled class many times, and would ask the class if we thought we should have class on some occasions. She would also ask us when we thought things should be due.
I actually took SOC 410 but it wasn't an option. I enjoyed this class. Kathleen is very kind and will help with pretty much anything. She was quite disorganized however. There are several group projects that you will do in this call as well as an individual project. Kathleen wants students to share opinions during class but won't make you.
She is really understanding saying that this was a summer class. But she is kinda disorganized and never posted when she said she would. Everything seemed last minute.
Takes a long time to grade, won't know about assignments until two days before they're due. Doesn't upload lectures to Canvas, exams are based on readings and lecture. She gets off topic a lot so sometimes we can't even get through all the material. No study guides or ANYTHING to prepare for exams. She's a nice person, but not the best professor.
Even though she is a tough grader and takes a while to return grades, overall she is good at what she does. Her lectures are full of relevant information, examples, and new perspectives on the world. If you study and pay attention to lectures, you will do well on exams. She is approachable and supports student success. And she's funny.
I thought Nybroten was amazing. She did the lectures at a perfect pace and was entertaining. She gives you some study questions to help prepare for the exams, and even an outline for the units. I recommend checking the outlines because sometimes she forgets to mention the readings/assignments you're supposed to do. The exams weren't too hard.
I really like Nybroten, her lectures were always pretty entertaining and I never felt myself getting distracted. The exams arent hard if you look over the notes from lecture and some of the study questions she adds in canvas. She takes awhile to grade but its not the end of the world. I would take her again
Professor Nybroten likes to just yap about random things. Her notes seem very unorganized and confusing. She likes to call out students that are distracted or on their phones; stopping the entire class. This class is not functional and you will not enjoy it.
This is a tough class to take with Nybroten. She is very hard to get ahold of outside of class and it takes a long time for her to grade your work. The lectures seem to be all over the place and it gets hard to follow along. She is passionate about her work but it gets to be a mess with the lack of organization within the course.
Stopped allowing computers for notes mid-semester. Overall, politically very extreme in her beliefs.
Genuinely havent had a teacher I've disliked more in my life.Calls people out for being on electronics in class, banned computers even for notes, had terrible lectures(10/10 yapper)Took away my B at the end of the year with a 0/5 participation grade although Ill guarantee it is because of her poor feelings towards me,which she made very clear to me.
This class is easy to pass if you come to class and write notes from the slides but like people say she does yap a bit. She pretty much discusses everything from the textbook in little detail so if you take good notes, you can pass all of the exams. She was strict about electronics, but she stopped bringing it up after a while. Overall, it was OK
This professor loves to yap and often was off topic. Many times she would get off topic talking about unrelated subjects to the class, and then spend the last 20 minutes rushing through her slides. Often didn't have enough time to wright down her slides (she does not post them). She also tends to skip slides, but still puts them in the exams.
I would never take a class with her again. She is so unorganized, lectures are all over the place, and extremely political. The concepts of the class can be engaging but she makes it miserable. Her style of lecture is annoying + chaotic. There is a mandatory group presentation (20 min) with unclear expectations. She is terrible at answering emails.
I agree with other students about her being hard to reach over email and her tendency to go on tangents, however those are the only gripes I had after taking her class. Attendance definitely mandatory and the lectures are most of the class but she keeps it engaging. Expect to drop a little bit of money on an I-Clicker or I-Clicker subscription.
I genuinely don't understand how this lady has been teaching at UWEC for so long. She is unorganized, a mess during lectures, and still couldn't properly work the screen/slides in the last weeks of the semester. She is excessively political, takes forever to grade short assignments, and will not answer emails.
She is a professor in sociology, so there will be political ideas spoken about in class. I honestly think the other reviews complaining about that just don't agree with certain views and don't know what to expect from this subject. She is a strict grader for an intro class, and be ready to read most of the textbook. Cannot reach outside of class
Obviously the subject of sociology will tap into political ideologies, but I have never experienced a professor that projects their political views onto students more than Nybroten. Shows up late, unorganized lectures, and zero emails responded. Brutal semester.
She is extremely unorganized. I honestly don't know where to start just don't take her. She's a mess in a dress. Rushing through lectures because she went off too long on a tangent and then proceeding to write an exam based on the lecture she rushed through without posting the slides online. Her instructions were confusing and ever changing.
dont take her if you are huge on taking notes. She goes way too fast and then its hard to catch up outside of class as she does not post power points online to look at outside of class
She was an okay professor. Her lectures were all over the place and she would go on random rants. Lectures were not posted on canvas either. The whole class and canvas just seemed very disorganized. Exams are not weighted heavily so that was nice. Two group projects that were meaningless. Overall not horrible but would not take again.
