Kate's pretty nice. She repeats herself sometimes in class, but she's pretty clear. She's always helpful if you go into her office hours. Sometimes it seems like the class moves a little slow, but that could be useful if you have a hard time with physics. Pretty good professor, you learn a lot without too much of a struggle.
great prof, extremely clear lectures, great examples, fair tests. very approachable and helpful - she truly cares if you understand the material.
I dont know why kate got good reviews, she is one of the worst teachers i've ever had. i was interested in physics before this class, but she made it SO BORING it was depressing. her class was an easy joke, waste of time, and money. you dont need to go to class to get an A. all that said she is a nice person, horrible teacher. avoid her if you can.
I liked Kate's class. There aren't many good physics professors at Western. She is strict on grading, but you will have plenty of opportunities to get extra points.
Sandelin was a total waste of time. She spent most of the class periods playing with toys she had confiscated from high schoolers. She refused to use scientific terminology until the very end of the quarter. And she grades very unfairly.
I definitely recommend Kate. I've heard alot of bad things about other Western physics teachers, but she makes class fun and teaches very well. The problems can be difficult, but if you do them, you will see almost the same problem on the test.
she's a very nice woman, gets very excited about her subject. I do feel like I'm back in third grade half the time, but she tries so hard to make it seem interesting for the students. She might not of used scientific language but talked in a way to make it seem clear. Her tests are basically from what she does in class, so going is pretty important
This class was a waste of time. For every 50 minutes spent in class, we would learn about 5 minutes worth of material. She seemed very nice and understanding, but I learned absolutely nothing.
Great professor! Available for extra help when needed. Keep up on the assigned problems and you will do well. She is very fair, but some tests are difficult. She wants students to understand physics and is enthusiastic. One of my favorite Western profs!
Worst class I've ever taken. Sure, it was easy, but it was a huge waste of time--we spent a month and a half repeating the same few experiments over and over again because she kept screwing up. I totally agree with the person who said that for every 50 minutes, we learned at most 5 minutes worth of new material. A waste of time, brain cells& $.
A good teacher! If you already know a lot about physics you might think the class is a waste of time, but overall I'd rather have an intro level class be easy than impossible and miserable (MGMT 271). Very helpful and understanding if you make the effort. Tests are straight forward and designed to test your knowledge not to trick you, RARE!
Terrible!! the class became like a physics class. she knows almost nothing about astronomy and learned more than i did.
You can tell that she truly cares about her students and her subject (phys 121), which is more than can be said about a disturbingly high number of professors at WWU. She is thoughtful, helpful and thorough when you ask questions in class and during office hours. In my opinion, terrific professor! The books for this class are insanely expensive.
If you are just taking this class for a GUR..DONT!!! I thought it would be fairly simple because its 101, but she has totally cracked down on everything. You have a quiz or a test every friday and homework assignments throughout the quarter that are really hard. She talks the whole 50 minutes and you probably learn about 2 minutes of info
I thought this would be an easy B or better but her quiz's are hard because you have to explain everything. Her tests have nothing to do with what you learn. she expects you to learn half of the class on your own. she tries to help but she sucks. dont take this class ever! she should go back to highschool or atleast let up on her grading. ****!!!!
It was a g.u.r. lab science. I didn't have many options with my lack of math classes. But read the book and make sure you know what you're doing, and you'll pull out with a B. It's like an academic tetanus shot.
Kate is awesome! Super helpful and clear, especially if physics doesn't come naturally to you. Quite a bit of graded material, and tests are very conceptual, but I felt like I learned SO much in this class. Expect to work for that A, but she returns the effort tenfold.
I thought she was very nice and helpful. There was just so much work and so much that we had to go over outside of class. There are a lot of easy points you get from lab and such and if you do the book homework you get an A on the quizzes. This class is not for the lazy!
I enjoyed the class, it was fairly easy. My main problem with the class was that she got off topic with barely related student questions. This made it hard to know exactly what would be on the tests.
I really enjoyed the class. She tended to get off topic ALOT, answering students questions and whatnot. It was sort of hard to tell what would be on the test because of this, but the discussions were always very interesting and the class flew by. Talked about physics too much for my taste.
Kate was born to teach! She is very easy to follow. There is a lot of work and tests are NOT easy, but you will learn the material!
Was very excited to take this class, but it turned into a physics class. Got very off topic during every lecture, so I stopped going, read the book, and still got an A in the class.
I took the entire 121, 122, and 123 introductory physics sequence from Kate. She is an excellent teacher for physics, really knows what she's talking about, cares very much whether her students understand, and will happily help with individual questions if you see her during office hours. Attendance not mandatory, but strongly recommended.
Kate is a great lecturer and has an obvious passion for the material. Her tests are usually tough, but fair. She is very willing to field questions and cares about student understanding.
I really enjoyed this class, she's very enthusiastic with her teaching and is very interactive with her classes. I feel like more teachers should be like her. Her lectures were interesting and she would involve the class so I not only knew the material but I had experimented with it. The tests are easy is you listen, do homework and go to lab
Ya... this class was fairly easy but the thing that I didn't like was how Kate treated our class... I felt like I was in 2nd grade after I left class every day. She knows what she is talking about but I feel like she needs to learn how to teach in college (she told us that she used to teach high school and that is CLEAR.)
Kate used to teach high school and it shows - she talks to you like a child, but she gives ridiculous amounts of extra credit online so easy A. Tests are unconventional, but worked fine for me. Have to attend class every wednesday for mandatory in-class problems. Overall worth taking for the easy good grade.
Never took notes, and while I did come to class every day I didn't pay particularly close attention. I did really like how she emphasizes concepts way more than formulas, which is great for someone who's never been a math/science person. Easy, but I won't forget everything the second I turn in the test as with most math/science courses I take.
I liked Kate but the class is a complete joke. It is a simple GPA booster so don't take it if you have any basic physics knowledge. Kate teaches a lot like a high school teacher and it tends to make you feel like a moron but I think in a higher level class she'd be okay.
This is my second quarter with her in the same physics series. Take advantage of the extra credit opportunities because her midterms are very difficult. Thankfully the final was mostly take-home, which made it very easy.
Kate is a fairly decent professor. She can be a bit confusing sometimes, but genuinely tries to adapt the class to what her students are telling her needs to change. At the beginning of the quarter I did not like her at all, now at the end quarter I've found her much more useful, and I'm going to take her for 123 as well.
She teaches physics more qualitatively than quantitatively. I thought she made this the easiest course of the series. If you go to lecture and do the problems you will be more than prepared for the exams.
She cares alot about helping her high school students learn...but she isn't teaching high school!! In addition to talking to the class like they are 14, she is a bit scatter brained and that can be frusterating. Study the in-class problems and make a useful note sheet and the test's are pretty easy.
Perfect class for those who are not very sciencey and want an easy lab science. I look physics in high school and I think this class is even easier than that. She is extremely helpful for those who are not very good with math or science, but don't take this class you are majoring in Physics
Easy, easy, lab science. Some math, but she will hold your hand all the way through. Some people are afraid to take a physics class, but she makes this subject fun and easy.
Do not take Kate. She is confusing in lecture and tests you on stuff that she admits she did not teach. Average grade on the test was a 58% and she is not curving, do you want to deal with that? She told the class getting a 50% is a good place to be. Tests have nothing to do with lecture or book reading. Stay away!
She is not a very effective teacher. Avoid
Avoid her. Class is incredibly confusing, test averages are consistently low. GPA ruiner!
Kate is incredibly friendly, but she needs to recognize that a 55-60% average on the tests is not okay. It demoralizes all of her students and leads many to feel hopeless. I realize that she does curve at the end of the quarter, but how are any of us supposed to track our progress when we're being bombarded with insanely hard tests? Don't take.
confusing in lecture and failing test average. very friendly personality and helpful but that's about it.
Lectures are very unorganized with poor flow. She gives nice demos and stories but wastes a lot of time on trivial things. Our class was constantly behind the schedule she had. Tests are hard but doable if you prepare well and do all the homework. She offers a lot of grades outside of tests to raise your grade.
This is by far the worst class I've taken at Western, and if you're Type A like I am, this class will give you hell. I learned nothing, and thought the point of 101 classes was for those not interested in going into those fields. You have been warned, take a different LSCI GUR!
Compared to all of these other comments, I guess I just really liked her teaching style. If you thoroughly do the homework and go to her for office hours, you shouldn't have a problem with this class. It was a ton of things to keep track of, but very doable, and not impossible to get an A.
Kate is a really nice lady but continously has averages for tests around the mid 60s. Consequently the average grade in the class was a d which isnt much of a surprise. Bottom line -you run a high risk of failing no matter how much you think you know.
Kate is horrible. She spends all her time talking about her grading scale than teaching, it's really annoying. She's ridiculous, do not take her.
So bad. She doesn't lecture, just talks about her grading rules... There's generally busy work due four days a week. Optional workbook problems on top of that. I hated every second. On the bright side - you don't have to pay attention in class, you won't learn from her anyway. &It's not hard to do well as long as you write neatly and overexplain.
Completely inconsistent in lecture and unorganized. You could probably get as much done just by doing your own reading.
Don't take this class. She assigns homework as if we don't have other classes that we could be taking. Over 30 Mastering Physics assignments per week is ridiculous. At most, it should be 15. Not to mention, the written homework feels like take-home exams. She's extremely nitpicky with grading things, too.
I've never taken a class that was so completely confusing, and I've taken this topic before, yet I often feel completely lost. If it wasn't because I knew better, this class would make me hate physics.
She's a very hard grader, and not the best organized, but gives great demos and very helpful explanations. Office hours are VERY helpful, and she's good at offering alternative explanations if you're confused. MUCH easier to follow than my previous phys professor, Rines.
Kate was awesome and i had to take this class in 4.5 weeks of 2 hour lectures 4 days a week and two 3 hour labs a week. You MUST read your textbook before you go into class. Kate does a great job of putting up examples and explaining how to put the parts together, but you need to read in order to understand the parts, classtime is used for clarity
Kate is a good teacher and the material can be challenging at certain parts. She gives tons of examples in class and on optional worksheets that she posts online. Tests have usually 10 simple conceptual multiple choice questions and 2 mastering physics problems. Online homework required and tough. 3 hours a week of labs which are very simple.
Professor Sandelin is a great professor who really wants you to succeed, but will make you work for the knowledge. unless you have prior physics experience go to class everyday. don't put off hw and if you have questions, go to her office hours or schedule a meeting, she loves helping people understand stuff.
Kate is a very sweet person, and incredibly intelligent. Her lectures were clear and there was a lot of helpful wiggle room in grading, like dropping the lowest homework grade and an optional portfolio. However, the class itself was extremely difficult and her grading could be rough. Overall, a good instructor. ALWAYS go to class!
I was thrown off at first because Kate really babies you through things, but in the end I left the class feeling like I had a real understanding of physics. Some of her approaches are weird but bear with it, I heard so many complaints from people in other classes and didn't experience the same problems with Kate. Very fair grader, very kind person!
Would avoid if possible. Kate wastes time most lectures and is big on group work and discussion. She likes to talk about how much she dislikes giving grades and formative testing so beware. However if you do the homework you can scrape by and feel like you learned nothing. Also labs almost never coincided with lectures.
You can do well in Kate's class if you do the homework, do well in lab, and attend class (already 60% of your grade right there). She also lets you drop 1 out of 3 midterms which is awesome. Besides that, Kate is such a sweet person and made me really understand physics conceptually than any other physics prof I've taken. I would take her again!
I like Professor Sandelin. Sometimes she holds your hand a little too tight, or she can go off on huge tangents, but I would definitely take her again. If you go to her office hours, you will agree that she is pretty awesome, and you will not leave confused.
A little too feely-based learning for me. We spent multiple weeks on just formatting of HW and class room norms. She has a very sweet personality but sometimes it feels like it gets in the way of her teaching
Probably my least liked professor at Western. She spent too much time on norms, never really responded to emails, and it was a drag to go to class because we would be on the same lecture for a week or two about the moon.
She can be a very good teacher and I personally enjoyed her class. However the inconsistencies with homework, feedback and grading on time was a problem. I don't think she is a bad teacher but I would prefer her to fix the way she does written homework.
The worst professor I've ever had by a very wide margin. She delayed our mastering physics homework multiple times, we weren't told when homework was due until two days before the due date, and (as of right now) she has still not graded homework assigned two months ago. The material itself is easy.
This teacher is a lol. I was excited to take 161 but by the end of the quarter I dreaded going to her class (which I only did for participation) because of how boring and unhelpful her lectures were. If you have to take her class read the text book and practice on your own, you won't learn anything from her.
Pros: Was a nice human being. Was very passionate about Physics. The labs were very applicable. Cons: Horrible lecture pace, spent a week explaining a concept that could take half a period max. Tests were at the level of homework worksheets but required an undefined level of description. Learned everything from lab and the book.
You have to put in effort for a class like this. I didnt open the text book once, but I did have Chegg to help me with the online problems. Kate is incredibly caring and such a genuine sweetheart. She loves physics and she really knows subject. Shes a bit scattered in her lectures. She give round about answers that can be so confusing.
Bad teacher if you need to learn, great teacher if you already understand. I say this because she gives you material in class, focuses on 60-70% of it, then runs out of time in class and expects you to learn the rest on your own. The result being the easy learners are fine, and the hard learners must spend extra hours teaching themselves.
Took this class over summer quarter, compacted into one month. It was kind of intense because of timing, but Kate made me excited to be in class! I was really pleasantly surprised how accessible she strives to be, and how much effort she puts into supporting different kinds of learning styles. Amazing person, very patient, just DO ALL THE HOMEWORK.
I love Kate. She's so incredibly kind to all of her students and really cares about pedagogy. She knows her stuff too, and she expects you to show a very deep level of conceptual understanding. She gives "participation" credit which you get basically just for being there, so your grade suffers if you skip. Do the prep assignments and the homework!
Kate is a fine teacher she just spends too much time on things that are not material related. She makes you work in groups which in a subject like Physics doesn't really help because everyone is learning and your partners don't know whats going on either. If she spent more time on the subject her class would be better. Class avg for tests were a C.
She makes it hard to fail this course (drops a midterm, offers extra credit) but also to learn anything. You will have to teach yourself. The lectures are random tangents that you have to show up for in-class participation. You will need a Chegg to understand what going on in the class. Disorganized & always behind.
Kate was the best choice for physics in my opinion. Her lectures were definitely quite boring and all over the place, but her exams were extremely easy. Typically 3 problems with a-d but having a notecard helped a lot. Tons of online homework, but she gives multiple chances for extra credit to make sure you have 100 in the homework section.
She's super lenient just make sure you go to class and do your work and you'll probably have a high a.
Kate is a really great instructor. She assigns a lot of busy work but its really easy to do its mostly just time consuming. She does in class group problems that you have to show up for but other than that attendance isn't required or necessary. She doesn't give exams just the dynamic assessments which are super easy.
If you show up, follow the lectures and keep up with the material, you will get an A. There was a lot of extra credit offered and the open-book exams were not difficult. She is more than willing to explain things that aren't being understood well by her students, even if it leaves her short on time.
You can tell Professor Sandelin knows what she is talking about. The lectures have lots of on-hand examples and have weekly answer sessions for the homework. The homework is a lot. Not in terms of difficultly but in terms of length and how many parts each question has. Her teaching style is fair and she is happy to help out or answer questions.
Kate was the best professor I've had at Western!
Kate is very nice, but if you need organized lectures you should look elsewhere for a professor. there's usually group assignments in class, but she often won't post answers. Days that don't include groupwork are often examples of the principals being learned, but it's hard to get a hold of the math needed in this class when you're watching lasers.
Kate believes in "student-centered teaching." Generally she grades on participation rather than correctness. But you will still have to put in work! Kate was a good professor. She was kind and responsive to students' needs. Except for the fact that she would basically never respond to emails. I think she was too busy.
Awesome class and professor. Grades were based on participation - you could redo work you got wrong for full points - and she was more than happy to help. Lots of working in groups and problem solving together, and it was overall a really fun time. I'm pretty sure everyone got an A
I am looking for a tight physics lecture, whereas in this class it is mostly self-learning with some chatting in class. I want to experience challenging and well put together lectures. Why am I coming to class 3 times a week if I should self study everything? The in-person sessions have low time-value score in my book
Kate made this class wonderful, one of those professors you have for a quarter and never want another professor. She was always accessible, and extremely flexible and understanding. She always kept the content, which on its own could have been dry and repetitive, interesting and made me want to come to class every time.
The sweetest teacher! Show up to class everyday and keep up with the hw (about an hr total a week) and you will get an A. I found the class super easy and any questions I had I got answered in class.
Kate is a deeply organized, hardworking and thoughtful professor who cares about student learning outcomes and creating an inclusive learning environment. Highly intelligent and passionate about the subject. Many professors could learn something here!!!
One of the best professors out there!
I was in the AEES program and took this class. She's passionate about her work and the course load was very simple and easy. It was mostly about one main group project each quarter. First quarter was a poster about a scientific study of your group's choosing, and the second quarter had an interview of a faculty member in science.
Took her over summer so not sure if format is different, but she was so kind and engaging and deeply cares about understanding. Daily prep assignments as well as in class participation work. Fairly easy concepts. Final was worth 40% but again I think that's due to it being summer.
I honestly didn't really feel like I learned anything in this class. Lectures felt really disorganized and I would often leave feeling like I could've just skipped. Professor Sandelin is really sweet, but her teaching style is not for me. If you're good at physics this class will be super easy; it's hard to fail in general.
SCED 201 is generally very easy, but Kate did a great job keeping the material easy to digest and fresh. She was EXTREMELY lenient about deadlines, and you could redo work that you got wrong for full points. Overall, Kate was a nice teacher and I would recommend her to anyone still looking for a lab science GUR.
Okay the class is set up great, you get a textbook that has a bunch of activities you do in groups during class, and she allows edits on homework and assignments whenever during the class. She really wants you to pass. But, she can also play favorites in class, additionally you pay $80 for the textbook that you don't even use in full.
