Very fun teaching style though a lot of information to get through and learn. The essay tests are hard, but if you read, you do ok. Her personality and sense of humor make class fun.
Kathy is a great person, and very nice out of the classroom. However in a large lecture class of freshmen/sophomores, she easily loses her temper and can be very nit-picky. Probably would teach better in a smaller class of more dedicated students.
She's my favorite professor I've had at the college level. So nifty!
Saunders rocks, period. This woman is so inspiring- she's smart, funny, kind and best of all human. That's a good quality for a teacher of "cyborg anth"! She's my idol!
Kathleen is my favorite professor. She is very knowledgeable, dedicated, passionate and amusing. She is very approachable and has an engaging lecture style.
such an approachable, knowledgeable, passionate professor. a pleasure to learn so much from a great person. interesting lectures

This class was hard, unenjoyable and long. Saunders was unclear and at times very cold to students. It didnt seem like she really enjoyed teaching this course. Lectures were long and she rambled a lot and seemed to get angry at the class when scores weren't that great.
Its an easy class if you study, but she requires attendance. She confronts students if they leave in the middle of class. Boaring lecture, but she knows what she is teaching.

This was the worst class I have ever been in. Saunders can be outright rude to her students. No one wants to make a comment because she always finds something wrong with it. Also she has stopped in the middle of a lecture to single people out for talking and walking in late in a class of 200!
Saunders is an okay teacher but she is so rude to people in her class. If you plan on taking this class, don't ever raise your hand or stand out in anyway or else she will call on you and then embarras you.
Saunders is a great teacher and if anyone of have noticed that most people in general find 201 extremely boring. Once you get into the teachers interest classes. The whole class experience improves.
Saunders would be a good professor if she didnt have unbelievably long lectures with no visual aid. You can tell she is very smart, but she makes people feel really stupid, and she changed our syllabus a WEEK before the end of the quarter, making it much harder to get a good grade!
This class was awesome! Subject matter was extremely interesting and eye opening. She does a good job at making lecture interesting and the videos add to the subject matter well. However, tests are very specific as far as questions go, so if you want As, extreme studying required.
Challenging, funny, opinionated (but open minded) professor. Made me want to come to school on otherwise dreary days.
She is a nice lady but very hard class.
EXTREMELY INTERESTING. SEEMS RUDE AT FIRST BUT OPENS UP. I RECOMMEND CYBORG ANTHROPOLOGY TO EVERYONE. iT IS A WRITING INTENSIVE CLASS, BUT IT IS THE BEST CLASS I HAVE TAKEN YET. I GOT AN A. AWESOME TEACHER, ONE OF A KIND.
Best lecturer you will have for a theory course. She is really funny, and inspiring too. Very smart woman.
For those of you 201 students who did not like Saunders, wait until you are in college a little longer. Her lectures are gold! She asks a lot from her students, but she gives a lot back. Demanding, intelligent, beautiful, strong! Thank you Saunders. Your comments and lectures meant a lot to us!
This theory class ended up being one of my favorites so far. Saunders is funny and an amazing professor who will take you where you need to go as long as you're willing to give your half. I adored this class...it was the first one I took from her.
Saunders helped make Anthropology really interesting. It was sometimes hard to take notes, because she talks quickly at times and rarely has any visual aid, but overall a great class!
Long lectures, unclear, long rants about nothing, NO visual aids. This class would have been easier if I could have been able to stay awake in it. Don't do it, trust me.
I took many anthro classes from her (I'm a minor). Enjoyed all of her classes; very down to earth and realistic about her expectations.
If you don't like Saunders, you're an idiot. She's one of the few profs on campus who will tell it like it is and -- gasp! -- expect something out of you. Wake up kids, you ain't in high school anymore. You don't need a visual aid to get through class. You're supposed to communicate and be part of a dialogue. If you don't like it, stay home ... in fact, that would probably be in the best interest of your classmates.
I loved her theory class - it was my first anth class with Saunders and she was fantastic. As long as you do your work and prepare - she'll respect that. I have her for 338 now and she's fantastic as ever.
I love you Kathy Saunders! You're the best teacher and most inspirational, motivating force I've come across at Western. Your jokes keep me coming back for more!
the person who said not to take 201 is rediculous!! saunders is an excellent professor, especially for freshmen. she's clear and knowledgeable, and she has a great sense of humor. the annual editions book is really interesting and she keeps everything on a really accessable level. Highly recommend her!!!
She actually was able to make 200 people laugh at 8 in the morning. She's awesome!
Has good humor,& lecturers. Lots of reading. Helpfull if needed. I bombed the 1st 2 test and went in for help and she turned me around and set me in the right study direction. Test are fairly hard, if you do 1 hour of reading/note taking a night you will be fine. (gives extra credit points on days with low attendance)
boring as hell. straight out of the book. Teacher was totally stuck on how smart she thought she was, self-rightous. It is a good, interesting class but she made it suck. I would take it but not with her.
Seriously, Saunders expects that we as students don't float along and receive a grade, but rather wants us to earn our grade. The last person who posted was most likely not willing to put as much into their grade. I have studied all over the country, and few professors put as much into their teaching as Professor Saunders! I loved her!

She is a very good lecturer. She makes things interesting and pays attention to student comprehension. Definitely try to take a class with her.
Cyborg Anth was one of the most interesting and difficult classes I've ever taken. Most of the subject matter was stuff I had never taken the time to think about before but with the help of a great bunch of students and this amazing professor, it became one of the best classes I have taken in anthropology. Saunders is an amazing professor!
Saunders is awesome. She inspires you to look at the world from other points of view and her enthusiastic lectures make it easy to do just that! She makes it clear what she expects from you in the begining, so no surprises about the workload. Take a class from her, if for nothing else than the experience!
Best Anth teacher at WWU
She isn't easy, but she's pretty amazing. If you're ever going to take an Anthro class at WWU, take one of hers. Kathleen's Cultural Anth class is the reason I am now an Anthropology major.
these people are nuts. ms saunders is a feminist who hasnt quite grasped the concept of manners or being polite. or how to teach for that matter
Saunders is great, and you get the feeling that she genuinely cares about her students doing well. There's an extra credit project, and on one test she allowed students to argue exam answers to get more points. The class is really interesting too. As long as you go, read the book, and can write decent papers you'll be fine.
i had three personal interactions with this teacher and she was nothing but unhelpful to me. She thinks her time is more valuable than yours and also that she is smarter than anyone in the room. someone needs to teach HER how to talk to students in a way that makes them want to confornt her with questions rather than resent her.don't take her class
I was worried at the beginning of the quarter because of the people saying she is rude. Even though I can see that in her and sometimes I think she goes overboard, I would not let that deter anyone's decision from taking the class. Sometimes I didnt understand her grading, tests were somewhat difficult, but interesting material, overall good GUR
Her grading on video responses seems random. I was writing the same way the whole quarter and was getting anywhere from a 5 to 10. She is not clear sometimes on expectations(annual edition assignments). Sometimes she seems like she is out of it and doesnt know what shes talking about. But the material is interesting and she is very enthused
She's very lively and enthusiastic, which is nice at 8am! She tends to ask obscure questions on the tests so read the book and pay attention. Go to the small groups and watch the (very interesting) videos, and you'll be fine!
Saunders is an amazing professor. Her lectures are both interesting and entertaining. I really enjoyed her teaching style, and she encouraged people to participate in discussion of various topics. You really have to read the book, and it definitely isn't an easy A, but if you put effort into it, you'll be rewarded with a great experience.
wowza
She was a great professor and would recommend her for anyone.
So lively! A very good thing at 8 in the morning. She is a tough grader on some writing assignments and sometimes inconsistant but over all she's a great professor and I reccomend this class!
Yeah, very animated for 8 am class, nice person but she is a hard grader on writing it is almost like a language class and no flexalbity
she is great fun and very informative. her tests are not super hard, but you do have to try (HINT: know the terms for the chapters... you will ace the tests) i gotta say her class is one of the few that is worth attending at 8am
The class is a lot of work but totally worth it. Saunders is extremely animated. She makes you think about your impact on the world as a whole and after the class one feels so much more educated about the world they live in.
LOVE HER! She's so anamated in the mornings which makes that 8 o'clock worth while! Take this class... it's useful and fun!
wow it was so obvious she doesn’t give a about students. It is beyond me how she grades these papers. I guess she picks straws. Has the worst exam questions, everyone always complained and she would just give the points for it, she knew she was wrong. Just avoid this prof, im sure there’s better!
Great prof., made me fall in love with anthropology.
Kathy makes the most boring (but necessary) information entertaining and relevant. Theory could have been a disaster but she made it really interesting even at 830 am. Challenging overall, but definitely worth it if you are up to it.
she is a nice lady and very entertaining, but the course is a toughie, and i feel like she puts questions on the test that weren't learned in class or in the book...
Saunders is very entertaining, and keeps her class awake despite the early hour. Taking notes, making flashcards, and re-reading the chapters make the tests pretty easy. And the information is all pretty interesting, too- just a bonus! I highly recommend this class, especially if you're looking for an interesting GUR.
Class everyday-first thing in the morning. She is awake, happy, and ready to teach. Lectures consist of slides and stories to help students better understand the reading. Three midterms-fairly difficult. The final is only on the last few chapters not yet tested on. Weekly small discussion groups. Semi interesting class with and interested prof.
The class was interesting enough, I guess. I found her to be very unhelpful outsidde of class. She was mostly blunt and flat out rude when I asked for help, etc. Her grading on papers seems really random, and she never explains why you get the grade you get. Overall, she knows her stuff, but if you are struggling, she is not one to go to for help.
Saunders is an amazing teacher to say the least. You can tell she really loves what she is doing. This class is not something that one can find boring, especially with the personality that she has. Some of the exams may have some questions that are asked for critically thinking, but it only enforces students to think beyond what they are used to.
Saunders is personable and challenging. As an Anth Major I was required to take 303 and was honestly not looking forward to it but it turned out to be one of my favorites. Make the effort to be involved in the class and to get to know her and she will make the same effort in return. She's great.
I loved this class, economic anthro. Kathy is my FAVORITE teacher at western. Her lectures are never boring and she her expectations of you are reasonable. The class was very interesting and eye opening. I would recommend this class to anyone- anthro major or not.
By far one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. Something anyone from any major could/should take. There's a fair amount of reading required but it was usually interesting. Class is mostly discussion so do the reading and be prepared to contribute. Do not procrastinate your final paper!
I had her for 201 and gave her a not so good rating, but after 303 I've changed my mind. When she's teaching a class she actually enjoys, she is awesome! She is funny and very knowledgeable and lectures were never boring. Upper level classes are more her thing. She has a blunt side to her, but as long as you don't give her any BS it's fine.
Dr. Saunders is my favorite cultural anthropology teacher at Western! She's witty, sharp, and expects you to pay attention and take part. She's very accessible. I got a great deal out of her class. If you need a professor that holds your hand, go elsewhere. Come back after you grow up. Totally worth it.
She is strict.
At first I thought this class would be a total waste of time, but after the first class I knew that it would be worth my while just because of how much enthusiasm she has about her subject. The lectures were interesting, funny, and she was almost always available to answer questions and talk one on one with students.
Lectures can be a bit boring but there are only three a week (one day is for ethnographic films and another for discussion groups). She is a very fair grader and there are many opportunities to do well. 3 multiple choice T/F exams, weekly papers for discussion groups, public anthropology project and several opportunities for extra credit. Easy A.
I really enjoyed this class. Kathleen is always willing to help, and provides numerous opportunities to do so. She likes when people ask questions and participate in class. A really nice woman, and her lectures are enjoyable.
Professor Saunders is amazing. Interesting to listen to, helpful to everyone, and clear and concise in class. not only is she all these things, but she is funny, extremely intelligent, and just great to learn from. Reading isn't all that important, just contribute in class and you will be fine. I would highly recommend her!
Kathy has a sardonic wit and is unfailingly insightful, thoughtful and helpful. She will challenge you in her courses but, even more so, she sincerely wants you to do the best that you are capable of.
301 was rough. Expect to read the ENTIRE text as well as write about each essay in the text. Tests are really hard, study groups are a great idea for this class. A LOT OF BUSY WORK!! If you take this class, make sure your other classes are easy. Otherwise Saunders is a pretty good prof and funny!
Best teacher I've had so far at Western, she is a very intelligent and funny person. The articles in the textbook were insightful and worth the effort of reading and writing essays about them. Attendance is mandatory.
what an idiot. at the start of this quarter i was beginning an anthropology major and now i am completely uninspired to go into this field if such incomprehensible, boring, biased people can be qualified to be teachers. the embodiment of prof. umbrdidge.
This class is like listening to talk radio. No point to lectures, no direction in discussions, and the content is strewn about without any proper organization. Worse yet it wreaks of upper middle class whiteness with a hint of Christian bigotry. Just telling it like it is. Not a good class for anyone who is actually serious.
Totally ruined my possible interest in this subject.
I had never had kathy before Economic anth but I had great things about the class and I wasn't disappointed. I can see how her teaching style could get lost on a big class like 201 but in the smaller class setting she was brilliant. She expects a lot and won't take any crap but if you try hard she definitely notices.
She truly knows what she is doing, and she knows her stuff. She really keeps to listening, and and has fantastic stories to tell. You can miss class if you get good notes from friends, but you won't want to trust me. She made my first anthropology experience absolutely killer. I would take a billion more classes from her. She's approachable
Saunders is not the easiest prof at Western. You do have to do the reading and attend lectures and form a study group to really get the material. That being said, she is a great professor for people fresh out of high school. Easily one of the most approachable profs on campus. Will do well if you put in the effort.
She keeps attendance, so don't miss class. Her answers to questions, even her normal lectures, are very unorganized. This class has a high workload and covers a ton of material, but most of class is spent in small discussion groups and she doesn't lecture on the material. Work hard and you'll be fine.
The rudest prof I've ever had. Literally had her throw one of my papers on the ground and yell at me because I didn't double space it.Extremely frustrating when writing papers for class because she doesn't want you to use proper English. She has tons of weird preferences. If I hadn't already declared she would have ruined my love for the subject.
Love Saunders, reminds me of Kitty from "that's 70's show' very witty and funny, but teaches you a lot and has many interesting stories. I highly advise attending "tea and sympathy" with her to talk and ask questions about the reading, tests, videos or opinions.
Saunders is GREAT! Take any class you can with her. You will learn a lot and actually enjoy doing it too. Go to class, use the guidelines she provides, and apply yourself and you'll do fine!
Saunders is an awesome professor. Her curriculum is very clear- although there is a lot of reading,it was less than my AP history classes in high school. Her lectures are interesting, hilarious and make getting up at 7 am worth it. She also provided small group discussions every Friday which I really enjoyed. Professor Saunders is great!
best teacher ever.
Kathleen is a GODDESS! still my favorite teacher at Western, she's fun and relatable but has tons of stories and finds a way to tell you about her amazing experience which always tie into Anthro. If you get the chance to take a class with her, DO IT!
I took Saunder's ANTH201 in my first quarter of college and really enjoyed the class. Though her lectures were early in the morning, they were entertaining, informative, and attention-grabbing so I was never close to falling asleep! She is a lovely, knowledgeable person who teaches with great enthusiasm.
Kathleen is an AMAZING professor. Enthusiastic, hilarious, patient, informative. The material was really interesting and even though it was a huge lecture class, she was personable and on our level. I absolutely recommend taking classes with Kathleen!
Very good prof with a great personality. She made me decide to be an anth major. Very approachable, be sure to clarify if you are lost.
she is great. her tests arent too bad if you attend class and read the text book. she doesnt trick you with questions like some profs do. its pretty straight forward. there are a lot of vocab words used on the test so those are important to study.
Loved Saunders! She keeps the class pretty entertaining, and it is pretty easy to get an A as long as you go to class, read the book, and study for a little before the tests. First test seemed to be the hardest, but they got better!
Saunders is AWESOME. She is very engaging, and is very clear in her teaching. The tests come straight from the lectures and the reading. I'd recommend doing the reading from Miller before lecture, since it gives context and makes it easier to understand what she's talking about. She's really funny and engaging, so I enjoyed going to class.
Saunders is great! Took Anthropological Theory and though it was a difficult class, the powerpoints and discussions helped. The multiple choice exams were difficult, but draw from all the material. Also, took Qualitative Methods from Saunders, which was more hands-on. She is hilarious, and willing to help students improve.
She is a doll really passionate and kind person. Kinda arrogant on her tests she will ask questions about her personal opinions and have a specific difficult correct answer she basically tells you to study the opposite if what you need to know for her tests so just memorize vocab the videos and c&c and you will do well. Worth taking she is really nice!
Really nice person and very passionate she tells great personal stories. She does expect you to be in class and although she doesn't do attendance she has extra credit questions based off class. She is a stickler for grades I had an 89.5 for my final grade and perfect attendance went in and talked to her and I still got the B+.
I have had her for several classes. She is absolutely amazing, lover her lectures. She makes sure to have a lot of discussions, no boring power points. All her lectures are very interesting. Best professor I have ever had.
Kathy is fantastic, my absolute favorite at Western. If you show that you care about the class you will get along much better with her, and she will be very helpful. Loves what she teaches and makes classes interesting, especially in higher level/smaller classes. Has a rep for being very tough, but will definitely work with you. Take her!
Very rude and not understanding. She leaves very mean and sarcastic comments on essays, but doesn't explain well before-hand what she wants. She will give you a zero on your paper just for failing to double space it even if you worked your butt off on the paper. The class however is very interesting.
I don't think I'll receive the best grade in the class, because her class wasn't easy. HOWEVER, she's very understanding if you show sincere interest in her class. There is no study guide. She won't give you free points, but she'll give you tips on how to study. So DON'T BE AFRAID to ask for help. She may come off a bit cold but she's quite nice.
Kathy's awesome. Interesting lectures (with some humor sprinkled in), lots of extra credit opportunities, and straight-forward exams. She can be a stickler for the rules (she WILL NOT grade single-spaced papers), but she's very friendly and helpful. She also can sound a bit gruff in her emails/messages she sends to the class, but don't take offense.
Professor Saunders uses great examples and is a nice lady. The class is interesting and her tests are fairly easy.
She's really great for first year students, and preps you for the rest of school as well as teaching cultural anthropology well.
Professor Saunders is very good at explaining concepts without heavy use of powerpoints. Easy to follow the lecture. Very interesting topic.
Prof Saunders started off very nice and then toward the second week she got really intense! I enjoyed what we were learning but she's a tough grader, but hey it's college! I do not recommend this class for a freshman's first quarter, it's a pretty scary one to start out with.
This class was great at first. She was really nice and easy to understand. Then at some point in the quarter it just became hard to follow her lectures. For exams, there wasnt a lot of study material online. Attendance to lecture wasnt mandatory but looking at the exam modules, it seemed like it was. Wouldnt recommend her for an anthro class.
So, far my favorite professor at WWU, full of energy, hilarious and extremely knowledgeable in anthropology and any question or detail you could imagine, awesome story telling ability to help you learn to see things from a different perspective. TAKE THE CLASSSSS
I highly recommend taking this class because you learn so much about technology and how it relates to people. But there is so much more to it than that. If you're interested in anything tech or cyborg, this is the class for you. You'll have fun. Seminar: discussions on canvas and in class, a paper and a presentation. Heavy reading - mandatory.
I wasn't initially interested in this course, but Saunders made it really enjoyable. It's early, but she makes great use of class time, is fun, and is clear about what's expected. I want to take other courses with her specifically because I enjoyed her as a professor. Other students with different profs. didn't enjoy the course like I did.
Prof. Saunders is extremely cool. She is so funny and witty and I loved listening to her lectures. She can come off as intimidating at first and she is very sarcastic, but don't be scared, she is actually nice. This class does require work, 4 exams, 5 essays, 10 articles, but it is not extremely hard. I recommend her if you take this class!
The class is interesting. If you study, you'll do good. FOLLOW ALL THE DIRECTIONS!!! If you don't do it according to the book, you won't get a grade. If you will miss a class, you better find someone to turn it in for you IN YOUR GROUP. Some people love her, but I got on her bad side for missing a week of class.
Kathleen makes this class harder than it needs to be. The exams are really anything like her lectures. She offers tons of extra credit which is a good thing since no one does well on the essays. She is not much of a help in office hours.
She was great! I'd take her again if I needed another of the classes she teaches.
Would take again. Good foundation for liberal arts degree.
She's very clear about topics when she lectures. She doesn't put her powerpoints online, though, so be prepared to attend class.
Important to show up for class. She gives answers to questions on the test that you'll only get if you attend. I got the wrong vibes from her. She seemed like she had a sense of humor at first, but then after a week I could tell it was just her looking down on the majority of us. She sticks to the syllabus religiously.
Professor Suanders is great. Her lectures are informative and not based solely on the textbook. Gives multiple choice tests, which as long as you study from the textbook and the lecture you will be golden. I enjoyed her class and as long as you stay on top of the reading and go to class you will be just fine.
Refuses to grade if things are not double spaced and is unreasonable when communicating. Not a good class to make easy mistakes in, which is the point of GURs.
called my mother without my permission. Not cool man
Saunders is interesting enough to listen to, but the material is awful. The tests are confusing, as is the class schedule in general. This class definitely should not be 5 days a week, it makes the material drag on and on. Honestly, the class was too boring to bother taking.
Saunders started out as funny and interesting but slowly her class got boring and she became more judgmental. As someone who's supposed to look at cultures with an unbiased perspective, I found it odd the snide comments she would make about others. The work load was consistent and challenging and her tests were average.
This class has a wide range of possible topics and readings and she did a really good job of selecting what to cover as a class. Lots of room for student feedback on what we wanted to do as a class, and she guided discussion well. Reasonable amount of reading hw and essays. I really enjoyed the class, and I think Kathy was a great professor for it!
obnoxious and condescending to students, kathleen saunders is here to get paid. Take this class if you want to hate anthropology. Poor choice of material, often poorly presents information that is flawed, biased or blatantly incorrect, has 0 charisma. Take cultural anthro but NOT with saunders if you are actually interested in the subject...
Amazing professor, super funny! The material you learn about is interesting and relevant to current times, I found it to be fascinating. Lots of reading, you're going to need the books! Be sure to study for exams too if you want to pass!
A lot of complaints about Prof. Saunders say that her grading criteria is strict, which may be true, but she makes every instruction ABUNDANTLY CLEAR in her syllabus, which she leaves up on Canvas all quarter. She is easily reached for clarification, and has weekly "Tea and Sympathy" meetings on Fridays. She is very particular, but very clear.
Best professor at Western. Lectures are very interesting and although the class is lot of work, it's worth it. Take the class and you will learn a lot!!
She really seemed to love what she taught. Posted lectures and there was a little extra credit.
She was a great professor but definitely grades harder than some. If you don't see things exactly the same way she does in an essay she will down grade you. You have to enter an essay contest but as long as you write the piece you are likely to get a good grade.
She is honestly so great, and you write a lot of essays, but they are really short based off of weekly movies shown in class or available for streaming. Highly recomend
Kathy expects a lot from her students but is available to help if you need it. She is very caring of her students and it shows during class. She assigns a lot of reading but it is only to help you understand the material better. I completely understand people thinking she is a tough teacher but in my experience she's great. She posts lectures too!
Relies on computers and textbooks to teach rather than herself.
An absolutely amazing professor. Certainly one of the best I've had at Western so far. As long as you read the prompts for essays and actually follow them, then you'll do fine. Lectures are intriguing and Kathy gives great insight into the topics.
Saunders was a great professor and I would recommend this class. She is very entertaining and her lectures are very interesting. You must read to do well on the tests, but mainly if you show up to class and listen you will succeed.
Professor Saunders is absolutely hilarious and she makes going to class everyday at 9am worth it for sure. She wants her students to do well, every Friday you get extra credit just for showing up! Learn the vocab and all is well
At the beginning of the quarter I had gotten the wrong impression of Professor Saunders, she's not as intimidating as she may seem off the bat. As the course progressed it was easy to learn the rhythm of the class which makes the tests, essays, and overall experience easier. Study vocab. Stay ahead on your essays. Expect to be graded on grammar.
Personally not a fan of economics but heck this was a fun class. It's a service learning course where you spend time helping at a soup kitchen often to then write a short reflection on econ standing. Lectures off of book in a way, good textbook. You write 2 papers your topic choice, gives great feedback & helps your writing. She's funny too!
Prof. Saunders was great: ANTH 201 was structured MTWRF with three weekly reading where you write two sentences for each. Four small papers on videos throughout the quarter and one large paper for the Public Anthropology Competition. And the best part: YOU GET EXTRA CREDIT FOR SHOWING UP ON FRIDAYS! Average exams. Great Lectures. Fantastic overall.
Kathy has a laugh that'll make your day. She knows EXACTLY what she wants, which can be a good or bad thing depending on what kind of student you are. Lectures aren't mandatory but discussion grades are participation based so that's that. Some readings assignments are significantly larger than others so be careful not to wait until the last minute.
Lectures were occasionally disconnected from textbook readings, which made it hard to reinforce material moving through the course. Showing up to the friday small group discussions earned you bonus points, which was a helpful grade boost!
Such an amazing woman. The class is full of awesome material. Papers can be hard, but the class is worth it and once you get the hang of it you're golden.
Kathy was an amazing professor to have. She made class fun, interesting, and somehow made every discussion feel organic. The classroom environment was very friendly, I thought. The honors class she taught was supposed to mostly just make us think, and her assignments were not rigorous but they were interesting reflections.
Saunders has the charisma expected from an interesting lecturer, but you will realize she does this only because she finds herself clever. An essay worth an EXAM GRADE was outsourced, and costed $15 to submit. She sends passive-aggressive messages on Canvas (which she does not know how to use) about her disappointment with the class performance.
Passive aggressive and constant messages on Canvas, rude about students making MISTAKES, condescending for no reason, doesn't seem to care about her students.
Saunders seems like an interesting, knowledgeable woman but one that's better for upper-division courses. We had to submit an essay to a completely different site online to have other students determine our grades, which I did not like at all. Also, she got way too worked up and sent repeated canvas messages pestering us about deadlines.
Super flexible and fun, but you need to keep up and stay on track. If you're not into working for your grade, this is not the class for you.
I had had the impression that Kathleen was a difficult professor and I was expecting this class to be hard, but it was one of the most fun classes I've taken (and it was my last quarter). You basically work on a qualitative research project as a class, and the work is split up so much that it's very easy. The final was a pizza party.
Kathleen gives great lectures, which are fun to listen to. As far as work goes, it's pretty minimal, just interviewing people and analyzing the interviews afterwards. Lots of in-class group work, homework is only reading short articles from Stumbling Toward Truth. She's a very easy grader, too. Great final class to finish up my degree!
First impression was that she was funny and a great lecturer. I soon came to realize how condescending she could be. Made to feel stupid for asking questions. She was quick to mock students and I wouldn't describe myself as sensitive, but she made me cry a few times. I appreciate her effort to provide opportunity for points in areas besides tests.
Im thoroughly convinced that Kathy is one of the best professors our world has to offer. Not only is she an amazing educator, she truly cares about her students. She challenges them, but is intentional about listening to what they can handle. If you want someone to get excited about your education/if you love good lectures, take a class with Kathy
Saunders teaches in a lecture heavy way where she tests on her own statements and doesnt help students who need more support outside of class.
Look, Kathleen can be very kind and funny. It is her teaching style that I have a problem with. This class is ridiculously hard. The concepts are incredibly confusing and to add to that, she uses huge words and explains the theories by other theories vocabularies that you as the student don't even know yet. The homework is time incredibly consuming
I love Kathleen and think she's definitely the superior ANTH 201 professor. At first confusing as to what is expected/due but once in the rhythm it was fine! Lecture 3/5 of the weekly meetings, then one is movie day, one is a small group discussion based class! Fantastic lectures and great examples! The structure of this class is super beneficial.
She's very passive aggressive when she see's that the class isn't performing to her standards. She's sent out multiple emails that are just unnecessarily bitter. If we weren't in a pandemic, I may have enjoyed her class more, but she doesn't seem to be very understanding of how it is affecting her students productivity.
I would never recommend this professor to anyone. She gets way too upset every time students dont meet a certain standard. That standard is almost never made it clear in the first place. She is a harsh trader when she doesnt agree with the content, and expects us to know what she wants without her having to explain it. Shes a terrible teacher.
Kathy has some flaws but overall shes a good professor I think. Theres a LOT of extra credit opportunity. Very good about using correct pronouns and being inclusive. Pretty time-consuming. Her tests are pretty hard, but there are only 3 throughout the quarter. Need to write 3 essays 400-500 words. Despite it being hard, I love the content.
She was very passionate and cared about the students understanding the material.
had her fall quarter 2020, just 3 exams and every friday theres hw where you read 2 articles and write questions & a thesis, and every monday theres an essay but you only have to do 3 out of 9 of them! honestly easy for an online class
The good: Passionate, persistent, funny, knowledgeable, and knows how to relate back to students. The bad: Condescending, rude, goes off on tangents, close minded, and acts like she's trying to pick fights. Overall, I think that Kathy seems intelligent and determined, but arrogant and temperamental.
Pretty easy class, I never showed up to class and did all the required assignments with little effort but in and still got an A-. Pretty tough grader but if you do all the extra credit it makes up for the bad grades. Would recommend this class if you're looking for something to fill a GUR.
anth theory was a really hard class and the tests are very difficult but its an interesting class that is worth taking, even if you get a bad grade like I did.
I took Dr. Saunders' anthropology colloquium (online) and I absolutely LOVED this class. I learned so much and truly expanded my world view. This class of hers was not difficult for me and my classmates, there were a decent amount of readings and the only hw was weekly assignments. So funny, engaging, and truly passionate about antrho. Would recc!
