SHE IS AMAZING! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE(infinity times) HER!!!!! Omgsh.. wow.. too much words to describe :) she is definetly my hero. She helped soo much. I had 8am class with her, and I woke up EXTRA early just for her class and teaching and I got happy when I am in her class even though its calculus :) SHES TOO COOL TO BE TRUE!!! <3 BEST PROF EVER
best professor ever. She is the only math professor to grab my attention.
Very helpful prof but can murder you on the exam.
AMAZING PROFESSOR!!!!!!! She is probably the best in the world at teaching. She knows so much about math but more importantly, she has tremendous passion to help students. NO other prof is as good as her!!
No words to describe how amazing she is! Extremely clear when teaching and she goes above and beyond to help out her students with their questions and problems. With that being said, getting a great mark in the course won't be easy (duh, it's calculus), but it's totally do-able. Not only an amazing prof, but a kind person.
Kathleen is the best math instructor I have ever had from all my years of studies. She gives very clear explanations and notes are top notch. She clearly loves mathematics and she teaches much better than any prof I had at UTSC. She loves when you ask questions and holds long office hours. She is not even a Professor (PhD student)! She is AMAZING!
She's very passionate about her teaching. gives clear explanations and will make time to help any struggling students.
She is the most amazing mathematics teacher I've ever seen. She is so passionate about math which makes me fall in love with math more and motivates me to give my 200%. I would definitely recommend everyone to pick her lecture !
Fantastic lecturer, does a great job teaching! The course is brutal, but I am glad Kathleen Smith was the one that taught it.
Kathleen is a passionate lecturer whose enthusiasm for calculus shows in every lecture. She explains ideas concisely and uses numerous examples to explain her ideas. Completing homework assignments is essential to mastering concepts however and sometimes the lectures don't go as far in depth as the assignments do.
Kathleen is a very charismatic, and influential lecturer. What she says does have an impact on people. 'If she steps on something, it is palpable'. That is not to say she is to compromise standards, credit only where credit is appropriately due. Just hope she understands that people listen.
GREAT PROFESSOR, but course was brutal. Really makes you work hard in order to get the mark that you want.
she's great in lectures and helping out but her tests are tough and on top of that, she's a tough grader
Kathleen was hands down one of the BEST professors. Absurdly nice, very engaging, funny, and always told you what was on the test/midterm. She was possibly the best math teacher I've ever had. Class was really hard (I didn't study hard enough!), but Kathleen definitely won't be the reason you fail.
She is absolutely the besttttttt calculus teacher ever. Unfortunately, I had to re-take Calc part 2. The first time I had Professor Thanhoffer idk his full name tbh but I re-took it and I realized how much i DIDN'T know last year. I learned so much from her and she REALLY makes sure you get the material. p.s. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, so do ur hwk
She is a great prof, very clear lecture and very helpful outside of class , however the exams are very hard
woooo
Great prof, hard course.
The best prof I have had at utsc so far. Explains concepts slowly and clearly and with enthusiasm. Tough course but she will make you like math.
Best math prof ever. She's hard, but her lectures are SO clear that you understand all hard concepts easily. She also cares about her students very much! AMAZING prof!
Kind, outgoing and willing to help everyone. A prof and a friend.
This woman is a fudging legend. I didn't get anything in mata31 but I understand everything she does. The way she teaches just make your brain SOAK the knowledge, like an industrial sponge. Best Prof at utsc. The course might be hard but she makes it enjoyable, I look forward to her lectures.
Best professor ever. She's very friendly, approachable, and inspirational. When she's teaching mathematics, it's like she's telling you a story. My role model. I'm looking forward to taking upper year courses with her :D
Shes one of the most amazing professors Ive met in UTSC. I fell in love with her when she told the joke if you guys wanna kill me, you have to kill me 5 business days before your midterm because thats when we need to give the exam to the photocopy guy when she asked a really simple question but no one said anything.
Amazing lectures, as a Maths Ph.D. she has the real passion for Maths--even for the most basic first-year calculus course.
Best professor I've had so far, wish I could have her for every math class. Made calculus so easy to understand. MATA37 was rather difficult due to the amount of content and the little things you lose marks for that add up . You have to work for it. None of the exam questions were harder than the exercises she gives, if you do them you are set.
One of the few profs at UTSC that actually cares about her students.
Best prof I've met at UTSC. Although I've transferred to UTSG, I will still take her course if I need. She is really nice and cares her students' success. Hard exams but you will be okay if you keep practicing. Homeworks are helpful. Plz go to her office hour or aks her any question after her lecture, she will always be there for help!
detail oriented and respects the opinion of the students
enthusiastic about the course explains how to deal with a question clearly her tests are hard but not too difficult if you finish all of the assignments and excercises
The best prof I've ever had. Though I'm not the biggest fan of calculus, she somehow got me to enjoy it. She is incredibly caring, so much so that when we entered the exam room, there were chocolate bars next to the exams. She even asked for a class pic. Her criteria is clear. Do your assignments and practice her lec material and you will pass.
One of the best professors i've ever head! She's incredibly engaging in lecture. Exams are fair. Attendance is not mandatory, but course can be difficult so attending lecture is a must
Shes great at explaining stuff. Lectures are always interesting.
Literally one of the only two courses that I am actively willing to go to( the other one being Anya's CSCA08). She makes lectures super intriguing. It is a bit of pain that there is no weboption but I can't think of a reason you don't go to the class (other than time conflict etc).
She's just so good at lecturing, definitely one of the best. Learned a lot more compared to A31, worked a lot harder than A31, but got a lot lower than A31 lol. The exams are so f***ing hard and long. The marking scheme is also extremely strict, so definitely be rigorous when doing them.
She's absolutely the best professor I've had in UTSC. She gives amazing lectures and is always passionate about math. Always willing to help students after class. Even arranged 1-1 meetings for students who didn't do well in midterm and wanted to talk to her about study strategies.
Sitting in her lectures feel like going to a play, extremely enthusiastic about math. Really cares about her students, I handed in a wrong assignment and she went out of her way to set up a make up evaluation. On final and midterm, don't study proofs of big theorems(FTOC, series tests,C.T), do the 'extra' section on the assignments.
Kathleen is my favourite prof, she's just amazing! Her lectures are amazing and she explains things clearly. She is always willing to help in office hours, even stays back an extra hour to help. MAKE SURE TO DO ALL HER OPTIONAL EXERCISE QUESTIONS. Her midterm and final are hard but completely doable if you do the exercises and ask for help weekly.
Kathleen was one of my favourite profs. She loves what she teaches so her lectures are very interesting and she explains all concepts very thoroughly with many examples. The material itself is difficult sometimes, as are her midterm and final but doing all her assignment AND exercise questions goes a long way.
Kathleen holds interesting lectures, make sure you go to those. She got hit by a bus and still taught the semester real OG couldn't lift her left shoulder to write on the board. Her assignments prepare you well. Go to lectures do readings finish assignments and you're basically guaranteed a good mark.
Kathleen is truly a gem of the UTSC math department. Like no other professor she understands the students' needs and expectations. Her lectures are engaging (as engaging as math can ever be) and makes great use of examples. Kathleen is fair and friendly. She makes herself available as much as possible. She gives the test format ahead of time.
She is genuinely passionate about teaching math
Kathleen's amazing. That's it.
Very passionate and professional in her field.
Failed in her class once but took it again in the summer when I wasn't crowded with other work and found the class really simple, it may have been because I already took it, but a 40+% improvement from winter to summer shows how when you focus during her lectures, an A really is possible with minimal effort.
Kathleen gives great lectures and very interesting. Even though I don't enjoy calculus very much, Kathleen definitely made the course much more enjoyable. Definitely tries her best for the students! Thanks for a great semester!
She is passionate and very good at teaching math
Makes the material very clear, but you gotta work for a good mark (do weekly homework). Probably the best math prof
You won't find another prof like Kathleen. Her attention to detail is immaculate, and her ability to explain very difficult concepts to a laymen is a true talent. She is very passionate about what she teaches and a lot of that passion radiates onto the students. Thanks for making me forever love calculus!
She is the most passionate person I have ever known. Not just regarding math, but the amount of sheer passion she is able to reflect during lectures. An absolutely amazing person.
Good, great, excellent
The 5.0 is not a lie. Great lectures.
Kathleen is an awesome prof. She teaches difficult concepts and makes it so easy to understand. She really cares about her students. I dont know if its just this year with covid but when being graded we were expected to provide a lot of justification for our solutions. So make sure to justify because I had trouble with that.
You have to work at this one, go to all the lectures, take notes, do all the homework and you can get a good mark easily. Don't think that it's a first year course so it'll be easy, because the material isn't hard but you have to develop the skill and that takes work All Kathleen's courses are like that btw
There is not much to say. She is simply amazing. The lectures are great and her teaching is exceptional. ABSOLUTELY take this course with her, the other profs just aren't good enough in comparison to her
Best professor at University of Toronto with top tier lectures.
She is the best prof in UTSC!!!!!!!!!
She's a sweet prof who is very nice and does her best to help. However the way she structures her course is just terrible. You get a quiz or homework submission each week, its a waste of time for students to make up a hwk submission each week if its not going to be submitted, we have 4 other courses! Exams are really tough, nothing like lectures.
She is the best prof at UTSC!!! Everyone shold take her MATA37 if you need 37 for your program.
She's a great prof and explains everything very well. But the course structure and exams/tests are the hardest. The TAs in her class marks super hard and it's a very difficult course in general.
Truly one of the best profs at UTSC, she cares about her subject, students, and most importantly teaching! Her passion for maths is inspiring and I loved going to her lectures even if the material was tough. Highly recommended!
Kathleen is the best prof on earth. I took MATA37 with her a few years ago, and I still remember her lectures are AMAZING. I didn't realize her lectures are even way more amazing than the amazing memories I had in my mind. Everyone at UTSC math should choose Kathleen as his/her math prof at least once in your lifetime.
MATC37 is a difficult course, but Kathleen explains everything so clear. She's always willing to stay behind after office hours if she doesn't have another office hours or lectures. You can even make appointment with her if you need extra help and you can't attend her regular office hours. She's just so sweet and nice!
Kathleen is an incredible instructor. Every lecture is a carefully crafted masterpiece, using perfect examples and explanations. The course is structured in an intuitive way, where ideas build on one another perfectly. She is such a helpful professor - willing to have individual meetings with students. Her passion and prowess are truly exceptional.
Kathleen is a great professor, not only her lectures are amazing but she herself is very inspirational and motivating. I took MATA37 with her, she explained the concepts very well, the illustrations and the examples gave more clear understanding of the topics.
Kathleen is amazing!!! She is truly an exception. Everyone wants a Professor like her, will go to great lengths to teach everything (especially super hard content like Calculus II), and really cares about her student's learning. Such a blessing that I was able to take Calculus with her.
Best lecturer in the department. Most other lecturers are almost impossible to understand but Kathleen Smith manages to explain things clearly in minutes that took a whole semester of struggling in a previous course just to not understand. Kathleen Smith also explains the thought process and motivation behind math concepts in great detail.
"Would you like some candy? I feel like candy helps the calculus flow in the brain" - Kathleen as she offered me candy in the middle of the final exam
Great lecturer however do not let that fool you. Prof. Smith's evaluations are EXTREMELY difficult and the grading can be brutal. I did not listen to what people had said and found out the hard way. I would SERIOUSLY avoid taking any courses if you care about your GPA.
I'm 100% sure any student can comfortably understand materials if she is teaching you. But, the problems about her are, she goes extremely slow, she takes long time to just explain one thing, her evaluation is crazy hard. By this, I'd say her teaching style is not that efficient, and made to entertain students, but her teaching is just good enough
Prof Smith definitely cares about her students. She offered a one-to-one meeting to provide personalized advice for students who want to improve. However, her tests are HARD. Regarding teaching, her lectures are clear, and she manages to explain everything in great detail.
You will miss professor Kathleen when you meet Ginnell or Pancer
Professor Smith was the best professor I had at UTSC. Her lectures were well taught and the assessments were fair as she gives you full instructions for finals and midterms. Remember to always justify your answer or else be prepared to lose 60% of the points. She is very friendly and is always helpful during office hours.
Her exams are so difficult than expected. But she is a nice professor to communicate with
Prof Smith is the best prof at UTSC. She can explain everything clearly. Her office hours are extremely helpful
Kathleen's care to students and excellent lecture is the consensus of every student who has taken her course.
The kind of prof that knows her stuff. You can tell she's interested in teaching, and that makes you interested in learning.
very tough on grading, very strict with every step
When it comes down to explaining mathematical concepts, Prof Smith is arguably the best in the CMS department. She is able to teach class materials in great detail while keeping the lecture topics interesting and concise for the students. You will succeed in her class as long as you understand her thought process behind each proof and computation.
Amazing lectures and an amazing person outside of them too, tells the most passionate stories.
Lecture is good. Tons of homework with disgusting function derivatives. Painful university experience to do her homework and tests.
She said she never curve but SHE CURVE BY TAKING ALL MARKS OFF EVEN IF ITS NONSENSE. The course load is small compared to other profs. Lecture pace slow, cannot concentrate.
She is an amazing prof who explains everything clearly at a pace where everyone can keep up. But her homework and exams are graded with a very strict set of rules, just solving the problems and thinking I got the correct answer is not enough to achieve high grades. Always read through her sample answers when taking her courses.
Unnecessary hard and strict when writing the problems. A GREAT SUFFER.
Firstly, she is good person with clear teaching style. However, her assessments don't match level of difficulty that she teaches in class. Her grading style is way too harsh (no part marks for midterm/final, avg for midterm is 56%).No matter how much time you spend studying, it's not going to help you on midterm(a lot of people dropped after exam)
tough course but good professor best mathematics professor in UTSC
She is a very nice professor! The course is difficult but she explains everything clearly. The only thing you need to do is following her steps and doing the extra exercise she provided.
The right of passage prof. Should consider that a lot of students in B41 have never done a proof in their life (I did mata30, mata36, mata23). This course is a prerequisite and made me miserable and I had to take it. That being said she's a really good prof, I just suck at math and didn't recognize how difficult her class was fast enough.
She is really the best prof. The course material is tough, but she makes it interesting and if you put effort, you can handle it. You must learn how to organize your solutions in a way that earns you the best marks. She's passionate about teaching and really helps you succeed.
Amazing professor, my favourite in first year! Quizzes can be hard as TAs write them but exams are fair. She explains concepts very well and is super approachable and friendly. Grading can be a bit harsh so make sure to follow her lectures and assignment solutions.
Best Prof at UTSC! I wish I had gone to office hours more and MATA37 is naturally a hard course, but the lectures were very useful, she teaches with a lot of enthusiasm and passion, and the topics are very relevant. The Quizzes were the hardest part of this course, but the mid-term and exams were fair if you studied well enough.
Every single one of her lectures was worth going to. She teaches the material very clearly and ensured that we had access to extra exercises and plenty of office hours. For assessments, she seems to have a very tough grading scheme, but she made sure we had a chance to request for regrades and/or clarifications. Overall amazing professor.
Generally good professor for lectures and course sources. This comment only for the course organization. This semester the professor's course organization is poor. The radio of the missing lecture and the crowdmark is late.
Good professor but if you care about gpa, avoid her. Hard assessments(exams)
Good teacher who cares about your learning but does not care about your GPA.
Kathleen is one of the best professors at UTSC. Her explanations are crystal clear and the assignments/tests are extremely reasonable. She's passionate about teaching, and her energy is unmatched. Highly recommend taking a course with her.
amazing professor!
Her A37 is the hardest course you'll take in your first year. Weekly assessments are either homework assessments marked quite harshly, or quizzes that will throw curveballs out of nowhere. The midterm given was 20 times longer and more difficult than the practice midterm to the point where half the class couldn't finish it. Good luck.
I love her lectures and teaching, she makes math really enjoyable and digestible. Very sweet lady but she makes pretty hard tests and man that final exam was ridiculous.
Overall good experience
Rlly hard course; Prof sets you up super well for success but YOU need to put in effort! If you want to do well, do both the extra exercises and assignments. also do the textbook readings; questions sometimes require pretty specific information from the textbook. If you put in an hr each on studying and assignments every day, you'll do great.
Kathleen has been the best professor I've had yet. Her lectures are always fun and informational. She's somehow able to captivate my attention every lecture. However, I must say grading was much more difficult than I would have ever expected.
Proofs require incredible amount of detail. Integration requires incredible time to learn and practice. Lectures are great, and concepts are slowly explained. They are not recorded unfortunately. I would actually do the extra exercises she provides, just for extra practice with justifications. This course just requires a lot of time to be invested.
thank you for passing meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Only prof whose lectures i'd actually go to. AMAZING prof, GREAT explainer. You will 100% understand concepts in her class. Midterm & final heavy; winter 25' final was something else icl. Hard (picky) marker, but she wants the best from you. Be aware of random quizzes in your tut; each tut differs!!
Amazing Professor. Never ever seen another math prof in UTSC giving such structured and intellectual inspiring lectures. Although having hard exams, harsh grading, and heavy assignments, she definitely helped me built a solid understanding in calculus, which I'm benefitting from for the rest of my academic life.
