Great professor. Is very good at lecture and prepares her speech so well...must take her class!!
Well organized and prepared. Interesting class and discussions.
Great class. Interesting discussions.
has little interest in teaching.. during our group "discussions" she would sit at her desk with her head in her hands..
Ithought this was a great class with a great professor - very friendly and helpful. I learned alot and would definitly reccomend
I was expecting so much more from a class about family. All basic with dumbed-down lecture and stupid inclass workings. Did NOT engage or help during discussion. Blach!
pretty clear, easy tests, gives really great study guides that help a LOT, lectures are sometimes get a little boring but all in all I was pleased.
I found her tests to be pretty hard, even though I studied the material pretty well. If your taking her class turn off your cell phones and dont snap your gum ... she yelled at us once. The lectures were a bit hard to sit thru. She didnt seem very interested in what she was teaching.
I joined this class because people said it was an easy A class. I guess its easy if you have an easy major like art or business, where Sociolgy is the most difficult thing that you'll encounter your whole 4 years at school. But for the rest of us, just remember time needs to be put into this class to get an A.
Horrible prof., hands down the worst prof. i have ever had

well i though she was great. always helpful and well prepared. interesting topics and not too difficult. one of my favorite profs at OSU
All the profs in Sociology are great but she is my favorite. The reason I became a Soc major.
Really good for the first half, she kinda dropped the ball in the second half though and I felt like I didn't even know what was going on.
Curves every test to the highest grade. Gives extra credit opportunities. Book and notes from class were very useful. Website helped prepare me for the exams by taking the quizzes.
Great teacher...one of the best!
Just go to class. She gives you the opportunity to make up a lot of points in class with attendace papers (IE: in class assignments). She also allows you to have a note sheet for the tests.
worst teacher I have had and this is my junior year attending OSU. She was unhelpful and did not ever respond to an e-mail regarding a family emergency
One of the worst professors I have ever had. She is rude and unhelpful. Her tests were horrible and she didn't even curve them. Don't take this professors classes.
One of the worst teachers I've had. Every class was a boring history lecture with notes on over head sheets. Way too much reading required that she barely went over in class, yet half of the midterms are on it. About half of the class dropped it after the first midterm. Would not recomend ever taking a class from this teacher. Test too hard!
Really nice. Class well organized. Study guides and notes posted from first day of class. Let's us use notes for tests. Liked in-class activities.
Tests aren't quite on with notes, so you'll have to read the hell out of the book
I'm currently taking the class. Overall, I've been pleased. The lectures are interesting as well as the in class discussions. The tests aren't very easy. If you want to do well on the tests I would suggest not only filling out your paper(notes you get to use for test) front and back but keeping up with the reading. Read the chapters!
This class was absolutely ridiculous. The lectures are completely bogus and her tests feel like they are pulled out of her you know what the night before. They are all over the place. And I'm slightly convinced she is a ****s/****/agist. She taught completely on stereotypes instead of facts.
I don't know what the bozo below is talking about. This was a great class and i learned a lot. Heavy reading load but worth it.
I just had to take my intro to Soc class. I had her and it was the biggest waste of my time! She uses transparencies from 1995, which already shows that she isn't dedicated to the class. Going to class was such a bore. You were never pressed to think critically at all. Professor not recommended.
LOVED it! Interesting topics, easy to follow lectures, good examples. The in class writings gave us the chance to apply what we were learning. Planning on majoring in soc now.
Go to class, do the readings, prepare note sheet using study guide and you will do well in this class. Nice lady and interesting course. Looking forward to taking more classes with her.
read take notes listen to teacher, kind of boring but you are forced to take a credit in this area
Tests were easy if you study and go to class. She let's you use a 8 by 11 note sheet with writing on the front and back. Your grade is made up of 3 tests. She had two extra credit assignments that were worth 10 points each. Somewhat boring of a lecture but somethings were more interesting than others.
Kathleen is a nice person, personable and makes it easy to ask questions/talk to. However, her Intro class is a total waste of time, definitely don't have to attend - just show up on test days. Lets you use a full sheet of notes front & back for tests. Not sure how anybody could get less than perfect marks in this course. Recommend.
worst teacher ever. so boring, rude, unhelpful. seems uninterested in own topic. tests too hard for dumbed down material she teaches in class
She is absolutely terrible. Avoid her if you can
I've taken two of her classes and thought they were very good. Interesting activities, wished there were more of them.
I did not enjoy this class. Her lectures were dull and uninteresting, on top of that, the material discussed is never included on tests. I only went to class for the few extra credit assignments she offered. Her usage of the phrase "is it not" is disconcerting to say the least and her tests are way too difficult for an intro level class.
Does not engage with online students and if you make one mistake look out!
Good class. Interesting and not too difficult. I really liked the videos and class discussions.
Harder than expected but grading was fair. Very informative class and good for anyone who will be working with children and families.
Some of the material is difficult but she did a good job of explaining it. Not crazy about group projects but these were not too bad. A great class for those who want to know more about women and international development.
Fairly easy, lecture material was quite boring and she poorly held the classes attention. Most lecture material not on the test and she grades extra credit assignments way to harshly
Super nice and helpful. Easy to meet with outside of class. Good bacc core class.
Really helpful and easy to work with on internships. Responds quickly to emails and gets questions answered. I had a great experience.
Most boring class ever. Its pretty easy but Stanley doesn't keep student interested whatsoever. Also, she doesn't allow students to use laptops in class to take notes with.
Good class
Terrible instructor, grades based on personal feelings about student and/or whether you agree with her opinions or not. Disorganized, made numerous mistakes during course such as putting difficult essay questions on a 30 minute quiz. Avoid this professor if possible!
Good bacc core class. Pretty easy if you do the work. On-line homework was helpful and even kind of fun. This prof is very willing to meet outside of class to go over material. Loved the videos.
I could not relate to her lectures at all, before starting the class my Major was Sociology after taking the class I am no longer so sure it's for me. Everything is online and her tests have everything to do with the textbook. None of the questions are from her lectures.
Knows her stuff but can be dry in lecture. Very willing to help you though. She's probably one of the nicest people I've ever met, and truly cares about helping her students learn. Allows notes on the tests, and the online homework helps you learn the material. Good class overall.
Although this class isn't very hard, she is not the teacher I wish I would have taken it with. She was a little bit rude at times, and had her favorites in the class. The tests were somewhat easy, but there were sometimes some random stuff on them. If you're really interested in sociology, I wouldn't recommend her as a teacher!
I am a senior transfer student that needed to take this class to graduate. I have taken numerous grad-level and upper division courses. This teacher gave me a grade on an essay that I wrote which was baseless. I clearly articulated how my essay met her requirements. No consideration of my essay, and she rejected any notion of being wrong. Terrible
I went to less than half of the lectures and ended up with an A. DO NOT take it at 830AM or you will miss more than half the classes, guaranteed. Good instructor but dry at times.
Very easy class if you do the work. Expect to do be using your textbook. She clearly knows her stuff, but sometimes she is dated in her references. She allows note sheets for the midterms. Overall, easy class with a kind professor.
Easy class but I hated how it was taught. A very big lecture hall with the professor using powerpoints as a crutch. She basically just reads them to you and your only incentive for showing up in in-class group assignments that are randomly placed. You get a full page of notes for each test. Easy class with dry, boring teaching methods.
She is very boring and blah. She gets annoying and all she does is talk the whole time. It's an easy class, but you have to deal with going to class to get points and she can say very rude things. She does let you bring a full page front and back of notes to every exam, which was nice and helpful. And she is willing to help you, but very boring.
While the class was extremely easy, she picks horrible TAs and sides with them if they mark off points for assignments. No matter your argument, a correct answer will be marked either wrong or will be docked of points based on whether the TA likes your answer or not.
The most unsupportive/withdrawn teacher I've ever had. For an intro class there's no clarity or guidance to ensure student success. Tests are harshly graded on material she doesn't even teach! No study guides or extra credit for online students. I took 18 credits this term, all straight A's except for her class and it's not for lack of effort.
It should be fairly easy to pass this class. I hardly ever went to class and still got a good grade. Lectures are always posted and she never really says anything in class that you'll need on the test that wont be on the power points or in your book.
I took her class online and she assigns way too much homework. Not only are there discussions, but homework, videos to watch and write about, a globalization project, and the exams. While her exams open note and book it makes the exam have harder questions. I would not take a class from her again.
My absolute least favorite class. This teacher is the worst! Basically, she lectures 2-3 points per week that correspond to the online homework. However, all of the midterm material comes from the online homework, WHICH SHE DOESN'T EVEN WRITE. Homework is easy but stupid. NEVER take this class with her. I don't even go to class anymore.
Good class! It's definitely a little dry (it is a survey class) but I have learned a lot nonetheless.
Her class is really easy and she explains things really well. She is also there to help if you ever need it.
Overall very underwhelming. Discussion expectations seemed a bit overboard (4+ per week), but she, herself, was barely present over the course of the class. Grading took quite awhile and the globalization project we were assigned said to use "brief bullet points" and no more than so many slides, yet I was graded as "too brief". Easy, but blah
A lot of HW each week but it's easy. Her tests are difficult, despite using a full page of notes. As a woman, the 'men constantly oppress women' focus needs to stop. Not an easy A but doable. Would not recommend as a bacc core - only take if required. I considered changing my major after this class. I'll avoid her in the future.
She expects so much work each week! It's not hard, but very time consuming and she grades you down for the littlest things. She assigns 3-4 assignments per week and then takes forever to grade them. The subject was very unoriginal and would have fit better as a women's studies class as it was all about the oppression of women instead of sociology.
Terrible professor. Too much work for an intro level class with long waits for feedback. Boring as to listen to but then the lectures are super important to pass the tests. She also makes you bring your own scantron to exams which is ridiculous for an intro sociology class. She has made me hate soc and I loved the other soc classes I've taken.
surprisingly tough for an intro level class. lots of hw & tests are hard despite getting a full page of notes. I think the average was about a 70 percent on both midterms and a C for the final after the curve (it was 60-something percent before which is a little extreme in my opinion). Very boring class as well. Wouldn't recommend unless required..
I really liked her at first, then it went downhill. First of all, she will complain about all of the problems in our society and never ever poses a way we could fix them. Also, her tests have nothing to do with the notes. Overall, she just annoyed me because if I want to read the slides I can do it at home I don't need to be in class.
This prof was no good. She assigned an expensive textbook that we hardly used but still needed for a mindless weekly activity. She also takes the constructs we learn about in class very seriously, which is a bummer for an into to sociology class that so many people are required to take
This was a great class and I really appreciated all the feedback she gave on assignments. I learned a ton of new information.
Great professor and great class! She is engaged and make sure you are too! I will take her again!
I took Popular Culture with her and it was by far my favorite class in four years at OSU. Loved the topics we covered and the discussions. The videos were long but added a lot to the course. Would absolutely take more classes with this professor.
Literally, if you just do the homeworks and just slightly study for the tests, you'll get at least a B. Lectures are not mandatory. And, she offers extra credit after each test (even though you gotta work for those extra points) it's still nice. She's also just an amazingly kind and down to earth women that is super nice if you go and talk to her.
I never attended class except for the exam dates. All power-points are posted online, and she teaches straight from them. Exams are difficult, but if you know the vocab, you'll do fine. She curves the exam by giving the highest scorer a 100. Online homeworks were based on completion.
Professor Stanley has taught sociology for decades and it shows. The class was polished as was her delivery. Class structure is basic with reading quizes followed by tests that are right off the lecture slides and textbook. OPEN NOTE TESTS. The intro class was pretty boring at times but what do you expect from a 200 level class.
I honestly thought that Kathleen Stanley is a nice professor that gives good, critical feedback on discussions. Homework is done online and is progress-based. If you want a fun and easy class to do for bacc-core or in The summer, I highly recommend it.
The weekly assignments were overall a light workload and easy to manage and do well on. The problem is her tests are incredibly hard even if you do the reading, watch and the lectures and videos. She's very sweet during lectures and always encourages people to email her with questions. Her tests are just very difficult.
This class was super easy actually. You just had to do the reading, through McGraw, and the weekly quizzes were actually the practice quizzes through the eBook. Weekly discussion board with two prompts and assessments tests every few weeks. They are open book and no comprehensive final so this course was a breeze.
I hoping to take this class as a fairly easy Bacc Core... not really the case. Tests are difficult. You need extensive knowledge of the book in order to succeed. Going to class helps - which I didn't do half the time. I did read each chapter & take notes on my own, & used her study guides, and I still didn't do as well as I hoped.
Overall, the class wasn't too bad. She is an unreasonably hard grader when it comes to the weekly discussion but in the same breath, is inconsistent with grades. Tests, Quizzes, and Hw were straight out of the book. The book used was McGraw Hill so expect long and dry assignments
No feedback at all on the few assignments we had and barely heard anything from her all term. We were only graded on weekly discussions, LONG reading question assignments and 3 unnecessarily hard tests. Even open note and open book, tests were extremely hard to do well on. Disappointed this class brought my 4.0 GPA down.
Professor Stanley was great! However, her midterm and final are very hard. There is so much to read and the lectures are very long. If I had to take this class again, I would reach out to her more for help which I didn't do as it was my first semester and it was online. She is otherwise a very knowledgeable professor.
Poorly written quizzes, a lot of typos, multiple choice options were not entered correctly in Canvas. Communication and grading was decent. Utilized a free text book which was great but only 1 student at a time can log in per chapter, making it very difficult to get the materials needed to pass the course. Overall I'd give this professor a 2/10.
I personally did not like this professor. She didn't make any sense at all and literally, there were so many discussion boards that had nothing to do with the course. Her lectures are boring and she is not my favorite person I dropped her class because it was that awful. the reading quizzes take about 3 hours to do. TAKE IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE!!!!!!!
Stanley has good lectures, but everything else is poor. She almost exclusively relies on weekly reading quizzes through the online textbook and short weekly discussions. Very little opportunity for real learning and it's all busy work. Would not recommend.
