Her notes are much clearer than the book, and a very helpful study guide for the course, yet, her tests can be tricky if you're not careful. She goes over the material in class VERY quickly, and it's extremely easy to get lost during a lecture.
Very easy class. I took her and compared to other people I know, she is the easiest MGSC 291 teacher!
Her class isn't terribly difficult, if you take really good notes and study for her pop quizzes. However, there is a cumulative final that covers around 12 or 13 chapters, so you must be sure you know EVERYTHING in and out.
MEAN, BAD, teacher!!!

this class really isn't all that hard. most of it is from high school. she doesn't take roll, but go to class. it is easy to get lost. there is also an online tutor, ALEKS, that you have to keep up with, but it's just a repeat of what you learned in class. take her, she tries to help your grade.
her aleks program was aweful, what a waste of time. and she is quite possibly the most boring teacher i have ever had, which fits right in with stats.
Her class is not bad at all. She gives you excellent notes so there is no need to buy the notes or do homework if you are even decent at general math. Tests are all quite simple, except for the word problems. She is not that bad to listen to, but she does go through the lectures extremely fast.
really easy teacher, didnt even do any of the homework and i got an A. Didnt work hard at all because the material is easy to comprehend. Her word problems are a little tricky, but not bad. Take her if you want your life to be easier
Just about the nicest lady ever. Take her; she is very helpful and the class is pretty easy if you try.
Rough class. Requires in depth studying and a few assignments. Lots of math... standard deviations, variances, etc... statistics. Very boring material imho, but not impossible if you don't get behind. Tests are graded by hand so partial credit is possible.
Class is extremly boring....she tries to explain the material but most people dont understand what she is saying...overall she is a nice teacher
Whitcomb is really friendly and she makes her class really easy. Quizzes are no brainers and automatic 10/10 and tests are easy as well. The only reason people would have to think this class is hard at all is if they don't go to class every day, otherwise an A is easy to get.
She is really nice and always willing to help. Class isn't bad. I'm really not good w/ numbers though, so I did have to study. Easy to get a B. Definitely shouldn't get lower than a C.
Very clear and helpful. She's definately the best teacher you'll find for MGSC 291. She has her own notes that she gives you (and they're a lot) but they have good examples and you'll learn from them. Her tests are clear and aren't meant to trick you. Overall great teacher.
She is the best professor, trust me. Most of the other professors keep their students late, but she doesn't- you might even get out early! The subject isn't easy, but she is very helpful!
She is very nice and knows her stuff. She is a very good teacher, she can go a little fast at times but as long as you keep up and study before exams you should do fine. She also prints out copies of ALL her notes for you. 2 exams + 1 final (which IS cumulative)+ HW and quizzes
Easy class, attendance not required. Class always gets out early. No homework, easy quizes, tests are pretty simple if reviewed.
Professor Whitcomb is the best professor for this class. She gives 2 exams, a handful of quizzes, and some excel assignments which are easy As. She also passes out VERY GOOD notes every class, which made the book completely useless. Only drawback to this class was a common final for all sections, but she can't help that. Ours did count 35% though..
Dr. Whitcomb is a very nice lady. HW is easy, tests are ok and she doesnt take attendance nor care if you show up. So take her.
Attendance not mandatory... Stats can be hard, she gives really great notes and goes over plenty of examples in class, BUT if you do not usually need extra help with this kind of class you can skip pretty much every day and still ace the tests. USE APLIA to study!! Review the homeworks from Aplia. Tests, Aplia & a couple homeworks make your grade.
Very easy. Very helpful.
This class is boring, but if you go and keep up with the notes and homework its an easy A. she doesn't take attendance so you don't have to go all the time, but if you miss a few classes in a row you can fall behind, so I wouldn't recommend never going. I missed about 8 classes all semester, and still got an A.
Don't take Whitcomb unless your life depends on it. She is potentially one of the worst professors for this topic. She is an academic type and has no relevant background. The subject matter is terrible, and she makes it worse.
Take her! She is by far the easiest stat teacher. She prints out notes for you and brings them to class everyday. She really cares about the students and wants you to do well. I would recommend her to anyone who has to take this class.
Dr. Whitcomb is really easy! She prints out great notes for you, which you really don't even need the book for unless you struggle with math. Tests come straight from the notes and the grading is pretty easy as long as you study. If you're really good at math this will be the easiest A as a business core class. Highly recommend her!
Prof. Whitcomb is a pretty good teacher. Her notes are very clear and the tests aren't too difficult. It's not an easy A, but if you study a good amount for the tests it's feasible. I would definately take her again. If you are good at math this class will be easy for you. There are two tests and a final. She gives about 6 quizzes during the term.
Ms. Whitcomb is AMAZING! She prints off the notes for you, & explains everything very clearly! We had 6 quizzes, 2 test, & the final. If you study, then you can easily get an A. She really wants everyone to pass & do well. She's always willing to help too! Since she was always late to class,we didn't even make it through the syllabus! TAKE HER!!!!!
Very difficult class. Still got an A, but definitely wasn't easy. Prof. Whitcomb prints out all of her notes ahead of time which is nice, but it makes class the most boring thing you could ever imagine. Had to come to class with red bull or I'd fall asleep. If you can stay awake the material isn't very difficult. Make sure you do well on quizzes.
This class is pretty hard- definitely the most difficult out of any business class I have taken at USC. Class is not mandatory, but she gives pop quizzes. You should probably go to every class if you want a good grade. Tests are also very long and take almost 2 hours to complete, even if you know the material.
She's a nice lady, her class is very fast paced so you have to make sure to keep up. Constantly review because she gives at least one pop quiz per week and if you haven't reviews or are really good at this stuff you are most likely to not do well and the quizzes harshly affect your grade. She however is very helpful!!
She gives out notes and has you fill them in along the way. Super easy notes to understand so you won't be behind if you miss a day of class. She is very helpful and I actually enjoyed sitting in her class. Thick Bah-ston accent. She will help you if you go to her office hours!!! I wouldn't have gotten an A in this class if I didn't have her.
Very easy class, but very boring. She gives practice tests before the tests and if you study those, you'll get a B. I'd try and take her if possible because I've heard horror stories about the other professors, I did very well in her class compared to others with different professors
Am in her class, very good professor. I will fail the class because of my own making, but I will still take her again.
She is really nice and is understanding (counted a volunteer thing I was missing class for as excused), if you do the practice test she posts you will be set up for an A on the tests. Keep up with homework and your grade will be fine.
She is a very solid, clear, straightforward professor. You have to go to class every day and do the homework but it really makes studying for tests easy. She prints the notes and its so easy to follow along. very well organized. random pop quizzes arent too hard. gives amazing study guides
If you're a visual learner TAKE HER. Her lectures are crystal clear because she gives you printed out note guidelines every class so literally if you just listen and follow along you will actually understand the material. Very nice and pretty funny too. Would take her again over other teachers who had group projects and stuff. 2 midterm 1 final &HW
Announces quizzes before they happen and only has 3 tests. Hands out packets as the class progresses which are useful and eliminate a textbook. All homework is done on McGraw Hill. Easiest class I have taken this semester. She is also funny.
Whitcomb is great. Kind of weird jokes that may make you question her sanity sometimes but she really knows her stuff. Hands out packets with everything you need to know and nothing you don't. Tells you about quizzes in advance and all homework is online. Tests are fair and not too difficult if you study some. Would take again.
Dr. Whitcomb is hilarious. Just go to class and she gives you notes. It's a super straight forward class should really be an easy A if you go to class. You don't need the textbook but you will need the online code for homework.
I took AP Stat in high school so this class was a breeze for me. She hands out notes in class that are self explanatory but it helps to go to class and fill them in with her. The tests are very straightforward and she is so so so funny.
Professor Whitcomb is a very good professor. She prints out the notes for you to fill in, is clear about what will be on the test, gives you plenty of time for homework, and tells you when quizzes are. I found it to be a challenging class because of the amount of information covered but she makes sure to review often and answers any questions.
Super helpful during office hours, uses iclicker for attendance. In-class questions aren't hard, sometimes homework can be challenging.
This is the worst professor I have ever had in my life. She no longer prints out notes like other reviews have been saying, the class averages on her tests are low Cs, she spends the whole class messing up the iclicker and fumbling through mistakes on her PowerPoints. How are students supposed to know whats going on if she doesnt? Worst prof
I took her because the other reviews were good. This class was harder than I expected. You can get so easily distracted because her lectures are dry, but then the test are hard as anything if you don't know the material.
Her lectures are so dry and boring it is extremely difficult to pay attention. I was not able to learn anything from her at all and had to teach myself the entire class. She seems clueless with the material and is not qualified to teach this class effectively. Attendance is taken by iClickers so you have to go to get points.
This is the worst professor I've taken so far. Her lectures are dry and boring, and she uses notes and materials from other professors and doesn't bother to review them before coming to class. She then spends half the class fixing the mistakes on the powerpoints and confuses the class because she doesn't know what she's teaching. Don't take her.
Worst professor I've taken at USC. Lectures are incredibly dry and boring, she assumes that you understand all of the basic information and doesn't go over it. Homework can be hard if you don't have Chegg. Only positive is that she is helpful for homework and projects if you go to her office hours. Avoid at all costs.
Whitcomb is a good teacher. She prints out notes and gives them to you. She tells you the answer to a good bit of the iclicker questions. However class can be boring but if you actually PAY ATTENTION AND STUDY its easy. Which was my class problem. Just study the note packets and youll be fine. Not her fault material gets hard usc upped the class
Kind of awkward, doesn't know how to use technology very well. Uses iclicker points as attendance daily. Prints big notes packets. She is willing to help but you have to ask and go to office hours. She is ok.
Class is pretty boring and I'm pretty sure she realizes no one pays attention, but just doesn't care. Nice lady though and wants everyone to do well. If you go to her outside of class she is very helpful and she also has offered multiple Extra credit opportunities. Definitely a good choice for MGSC291.
Class is incredibly dry and boring. There is often delays when the teacher struggles with technology, constantly makes mistakes on exams and review keys, often refers to other teachers for help when approached with questions, etc.
Shes actually the most boring professor I have ever had. You learn absolutely nothing during class, yet you have to go due to iclicker questions. The exams suck, the group projects suck, and you have endless amounts of homework. Although getting a B in the class is not that difficult as long as you do well on the projects even if you fail exams.
Whitcomb literally has no clue on how to teach or schedule her teaching. The last weeks of class we had multiple homework assignments on top of this stupid kaggle project on top of an exam. She uses iclicker questions for attendance and if you get them wrong you don't get attendance points. Worst professor I've had so far at USC take anyone else.
Take Whitcomb. The class itself is incredibly hard but out of all the other prof's, she is best. Super approachable during office hours (she will do your hw for you basically) and makes tests pretty straightforward. Study her note packets, pay somewhat attention during class, and get A's on hw / cases / projects and you will get an A in the class.
The class itself is really hard with any professor. She understands that and is very helpful and will help you in anyway possible.
literally just so boring but this class is hard with any professor. Whitcomb is almost too smart in when teaching things she doesnt fully explain because its obvious in her head but not to everyone else.
Don't know why her rating isn't higher. Super dry humor that always makes the class laugh, will help you in office hours. She can't help that the class is boring and she has a monotone. Very underrated professor, take Whitcomb! Much less assignments, projects, and cases and goes at a slower pace than the other professors. Go to the data lab though
I am currently a few weeks into class and have learned absolutely nothing. I pay attention and haven't missed a class. I have a 4.0. I would not recommend her to anyone. It's like she does not know the material at all. She mutters under her breath and reads off of the slides. Incredibly boring and a waste of my time. Worst professor I've had.
MGSC291 isnt too hard of a class in itself but Whitcomb definitely doesnt make it any easier. Be prepared to teach yourself most of the material. Lectures are boring and almost useless. Id take someone else if possible.
Its a pretty hard class but as long as you do well on the homework, projects and cases youll pass. I literally failed 2 tests and still ended up with a B. Lectures are boring but she is super nice and wants students to do well.
She is a solid choice for this class. It is majority statistics while memorizing the R code for each test. She is super nice, and wants us to do well and sends us lots of email reminders about due dates. She also pads the grades with group projects, cases, and homework so if you do bad on a test or two it wont kill you.
The class itself is hard and professor Whitcomb really doesn't help. However there are a bunch of easier assignments that will help get your grade up. The tests are a bit on the harder side just because the material is hard but everything else is easy. She is definitely a great person and will easily help you in person or over email.
People say the class is hard, but it really isn't that hard. The first exam that average grade was a 69. Could not tell you why, since it was the easiest exam of the semester. She curved it a lot so most people could recover from it.
the material itself was not terribly terribly hard, but with Covid and being online, this teacher made it very inconvenient to reach her, and just made it hard to do well. Her lectures do not really help and her responses to emails do not give any clarity!!! I recommend another teacher.
If you have the ability to do so, take another professor. If not, do not get your hopes up before completing and turning in assignments, and yes, that goes to those you may have a statistics PhD as well.
The material for this class just isn't very exciting, that's not really Professor Whitcomb's fault. She hits all the things you need to know in the lectures but be prepared to have to really work hard on the homework. The tests are tricky but with any luck you will come out alright. Make sure to study your notes thoroughly beforehand.
This class is hard without a coding basis. There were many times that the class was completely lost after lectures. Her lectures have 50 slides each so it is hard to actually know what is important. She gives study guides for exams, and I did well on tests with those. There are group projects, but they aren't too time consuming or difficult
don't do it to yourself. she didn't teach us anything and then blamed our class for the average on the exam being a 64. said exam was on the same day as a mandatory career expo. expects you to know the coding language R.
Reads straight from powerpoints that she has to correct mid lecture because she made errors and didn't edit. assigns projects and cases with content we did not go over in class and does not allow us to get help from resources such as the data lab. instead of curving the first exam which the highest grade was a 68, she assigned another quiz.
Worst professor I've ever had. She cannot teach to save her life and reviews useless PowerPoints and mixes in in-class iclicker questions where almost every iclicker question half the class gets it wrong & she gets confused why we don't know it. Exams are crazy hard and the class average on the first exam was a 64 & the second was a 70. Do not take
Darla Moore School of Business cannot be considered a prestigious school as long as Whitcomb is a professor there. For a class that most business majors need to take, she does just about the worst job she could possibly do w it. For your sake and out of respect to education in general do not take mgsc291 w this professor. If you take her, good luck
I (along with many others) was lost and confused for the majority of this class. Attending lecture seemed to only decrease my understanding of the material while increasing my desire to fall asleep. Professors like Dr Whitcomb are aspects of why I transferred out of UofSC and I recommend you do the same if you have the opportunity!
So basically she is the worst. She mumbles when she gives lectures and is not clear on anything at all. Hw is okay, tests are almost impossible even with studying. Projects are unclear and you are not allowed help on almost every assignment. Take any other teacher for this course.
DO NOT TAKE KATHLEEN WHITCOMB. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE KATHLEEN WHITCOMB. She is by far the worst professor I have ever had. Her lectures make no sense and she goes on random tangents that seem to have no end. The projects and cases make no sense and you are not allowed to ask for help so good luck figuring that out!
The people who whined on here about Prof Whitcomb didnt want to do the work and now they are unhappy with their grades. The exams were easy if you went to class, reviewed the slides, and actually did the homework instead of just getting answers from chegg. 1/3 of the class didnt attend class regularly based on iclickers. Learning takes effort.
All of the reviews below are accurate of Professor Whitcomb. Truly the worst professor I have ever had at Darla. Her lack of compassion for teaching and her students is beyond me. Assigned a project over Thanksgiving break, an exam the first day back from break, average on exams were 64, not very accessible outside of class/rude over email.
Take a different professor. VERY hard exams and she doesn't teach the material well at all. Granted the material is already difficult but she doesn't make it any easier. Her voice is also like sandpaper, which doesn't help either. The only plus is that she lets you have a formula sheet on the exams, they are on lockdown browser though.
She is by far the worst professor I have ever had. She absolutely could care less about her students success with a fantastic average of a 64 on the first exam and just a little more on the 2nd. Her homeworks, projects, cases, and lectures mean absolutely nothing for prep for the exams. Please for your own sake, never take Whitcomb
Lectures are useless other than getting clicker points. It feels like she's talking to herself at the podium. No point in taking notes. Squeeze the entire review on your 9.5x11 paper that you can use during the exam and you are golden. You won't learn much from this class so take it with the homies for support. Live laugh love, R coding.
Relishes in the fact that her exams are hard. Doesn't allow pencils, paper, or calculators for exams, and often questions are ambiguous or are complex. The lectures feel like they just crawl along which makes it hard to understand what will be on the exam. Lectures are just her monotonous droning while reading a LONG PowerPoint. Lots of using "R"
Notes are confusing. She knows exams are hard, says I don't understand why people score so low on the exams. A TON of information on guides NOT on the exam. Dismissive about an issue happening between me and my 2nd project partner. She assigned them as my partner for the last project, I voiced my uncomfortably with it she told me to figure it out
MGSC 291 is a very hard course that requires you to code and other hard statistical concepts. Whitcomb doesn't do her best to reduce to dofficulty and only reads off of slides every class to lecture. If you don't pay attention every class you will struggle and fall behind. Take someone else if you can
MGSC 291 is a hard course no matter what. However, Whitcomb makes it totally doable. Her lectures and slides she posts are incredible helpful, and she is great at answering questions. When you break her class down into not overthinking the code and just knowing what you MUST know, the class comes easy. She is one of the best professors I've had.
Prof. Whitcomb is a solid MGSC 291 choice. Obviously the class is going to be hard since it's dealing with R-coding. Whitcomb does a good job laying out the course schedule so you know what's coming. However, the class is very lecture-heavy. The tests are a pretty high percentage of your grade so you have to make around a C or better to do well.
If you take Whitcomb for MGSC291 prepared to be lost the whole class! The notes are incredibly dense and long and she doesn't bother trying to explain a lot of them cause she just reads from them for the entire lecture. Tests are pretty difficult and the study guides she provides do little to nothing to actually prepare yourself
This class isnt easy . Prof Whitcomb e wasnt as bad as other reviews made her out to be . Pretty straightforward-test , homework , cases and group projects . Test were hard but if you do well on everything else you should get a decent grade
These reviews are harsh. Professor Whitcomb isnt super upbeat and does tend to read from the slides but if you go to class and do the homework the class shouldn't be that difficult. She answers questions when you need it by email. She allowed me to switch my project partner. All in all hard subject but if youre taking it in person I recommend her.
She wasnt as bad as many of the other reviews said . Homework was not bad and between Hw, cases and projects it helps your grade as the tests are difficult .final is optional if you are happy with your grade
The best choice for 291 in my opinion. I took this class fully online with another professor and had to withdraw because it was so difficult. Professor Whitcomb is clear with her grading criteria and helps your grade out with the weight of the cases and homeworks you complete. A few manageable group projects that she posts tutorials for to help.
This class covers difficult concepts and ideas which makes the lectures very boring. The homework, cases, and projects are super easy and not very time-consuming. There are 3 tests and they can be difficult. If you do not do well on the tests you can still receive a B in the class. Professor Whitcomb is the best professor to take for this class.
