she's got the blahs real bad and so will you if take her courses.
She is a very informed teacher. I had a tough time in her class but it was worth it.

great woman..very knowledgable..respect her and she'll respect you
i thought this prof was very knowledgable and helpful. i liked the class because it helped me see more clearly about the social issues we are ALL facing today that i normally wouldn't have paid much attention to. great prof. i would suggest this class and prof
OH my god. She is really knowledgable but her bias toward racism shown through the entire semster. I took this class to learn about feminine perspectives as pertaining to all the isms but all I heard was a diatribe about white privilege and how we needed to fight racism and although racism is an issue, it was not the issue I wanted to study.
Wonderful professor! Yes, she's quite liberal, but I can forgive her for her obvious bias. Took time to ensure that the class understood the basic idea of philosophy. Gorgeous woman, by the way.
this is a knowledgable woman, but she obviously has race issues. I enjoyed each and every class and looked forward to it, but I ended up with a C and Im an A student. I still dont understand what her criteria is for grading..I participated in every discussion, and was one of the only ones who did. The girl I worked with in class from Africa got a
Dropped the class b/c it was so boring. She has a really annoying voice. A lot of reading which is time consuming. She was really disorganized and not engaging in the least, which I feel is very important for a philosophy class.
Tragically misleading. A Philosophy course: a feminist perspective instead was a "why you should be a socialist" class. For example, heavy assigned readings on global labor conditions while if you ask a question like "where does our morality come from?" the question will be treated as if it is barely relevant to the study.
she had no idea what was going on, didn't learn anything in regards to feminist theory or philosophy. This class is all about prejudice and global labor laws. No point in this class.
this class is extremely disorganized. the syllabus has been changed 3 times and it still isnt clear. also, she gives us handout after handout on top of the many textbooks assigned. in addition to those readings, she emails and posts MORE readings on blackboard at the last minute, many of which you cant even open. i have no idea what's expected in t
Wininger is only interested in hearing what she agrees with. Don't bother having your own opinions. She has favorites. This is so bad that she actually admits to having students write their names on the last pages of their papers so she can't judge them. She is by far the worst professor I have had yet in my college education!

Challenging and interesting. It opened up my world.
Dr. Winninger is one of the greatest professors I have ever had at USM. She loves what she teaches. She gets her students involved and cares about your opinions and always listens to your point of view. She is understanding when it comes to emergencies and will help you with anything you need. At USM, how many professors really do that? 1%?
I honestly don't know many students didn't like Dr. Winninger. She is the best professor I've ever had at USM. She is so knowledgable, encouraging, and she knows her material. She gave me a new vision and made me look at myself differently and not only do good things for myself, but also for the whole humankind... how she did it? Can't put in words
I really, really loved this class. Dr. Winninger is hugely smart. It's also the first time a professor took initiative to reach out to me and offer extra help. Really, really great teacher. Don't be afraid to speak up in class.
She is really hard to understand, she never tells you what she is looking for and fails you because you didnt do what she wanted. do not get her for a teacher
This is a great class if you are interested in the visual arts. Philosophers and artists have their say. I liked being the expert for the day and the discussions, awsome.
This is a great class although some students don't participate. I got a lot out of it, esp. because I'm new to usm.
She's a great teacher. Her philosophy of film course was fascinating. She covered a variety of genres and kept the discussions interesting. I will remember the films and discussions forever. Some of the text was challenging but so worth the time and effort.
An Intro to Philosophy that made me think about sexuality, gender, shopping, Islam, and poverty. We read everything from Aristotle to magazines.
Intro was not what I wanted to take but it was really interesting once I figured out the Prof wanted you to think on your own. Her idea was that college is not High School, but what does that mean? She also has a dry sense of humor so at first I thought she was being sarcastic then I realized she was joking.
Must keeep up with work. Classi is fair and interesting, she really likes artists, but don't fall behind on the readings and come to class prepared. Quiz or some writing every day. I liked the mix of lecture , student presentation, dscussion.
Her discussions in class are very interesting and enjoyable overall, but the graded work is never clear OR fair. The essays are short, but she is a tough critic and is definitely not eager to help you. She is bubbly on the outside as a person, but over time I found that she can be very rude to students. Workload is light until the end of the course
this was my first philosophy class and I loved it. Teacher introduced me to Philosophy Club and helped me outside of class. awesome!
Great class very helpful prof. took time with me. Opened my eyes!
Very good discussions, assignments and readings clear from the 1sr day. Funny!
Loved it. Good mixture of Art /jistory and philosophy. I had to take this but liked how the discussions went. Learned about the philosopher sbut she respected out thoughts to
Best class my 1st year. Liked some books better than other. Fun but a lot of work. Didn't understand all the paper instructions, but really did well. good exp, good prof.
very knowledgeable I've had her for 2 classes now including Film and Art. liked both but phil of art was a lot of work I didn't realise it was for Seniors. Interesting ideas and discussions.
At first, this class was fun to go to & explore different perspectives. However, she was never clear as to what she wanted in written work or what we needed to know for quizzes. When we would ask about homework or papers, she would tell us to look in the syllabus, which was thoroughly useless. Overall nice person but unbearably unhelpful professor.
This was an interesting class in sex and love. Fun in most classes, lots of discussion. Some of the issues were hard to take but we were warned and could opt out of some sad things. Great teacher, some readings were hard, some students in the course were very annoying (not the courses fault). Teacher treated us fairly but not an easy "A"
Professor was very energetic, but was not very helpful when asking about class work or assignments. She would tell us to look at the syllabi. we had some unexpected quizzes. Never what to study for. I hated the course but the professor was happy.
PROFESSOR WAS HELPFUL AND VERY FUNNY. THE ASSIGNMENTS WERE CLEAR BUT NOT ALWAYS EASY TO FIND ON BLACKBOARD. SHE WAS ALWAYS IN HER OFFICE DURING OFFICE HOURS AND MADE EXTRA TIME FOR ME ON OTHER DAYS. THIS WAS A DIFFICULT COURSE FOR ME BECAUSE I DON'T WRITE A LOT, BUT I GOT LOTS OF SUPPORT.
Philosophy of Art was one of my favorite classes at USM. It was a real mixture of art, criticism and philosophy. I liked the short papers and no FINAL! Wasn't wild about quizzes but did ok on them. liked the exposure to really new art and artists. Sinc it was required I was surprised by how much I liked it.
This was my 1st USM class and i didnt know what to expect. It turned out to be really fun. There was a lot of short writing and one longer paper. Prof was always availabble for me (once I found her office). Great choice for EYE
Overall a very nice lady, great teacher with good beliefs. Was very unclear at the beginning of the year, but that changed when half the class was failing. A tough class, no easy slide-by, but a great EYE course. The history of art and philosophy of our past is important, and she really taught me the basics of what it was all about.
This class was an eye opener, lot's of new art and we could present are own work if we are atrists. I presented mine and related it to Benjamin. Really enjoyed it. Professor was fair and acessible.
This teacher really enjoyed teaching and got everyone involved. I liked sitting in a circle. Some of the material was difficult to deal with . I liked the discussion about Love and the presentations It felt great to have a plan for taking action and making a change!
Prof Winninger is one of the bestt teachers I've had here. Once you get her sense of humor , classes are lively and fun. She is very outspoken but lets you have your view to.
This was a really interesting class in Film Theory. I saw a lot of films I wouldn't have necessarily chosen but I learned a lot about analysing them. Prof very helpful, encouraging, and available.
This was my first course at USM and I hated it. If you hate writing, and lots of it, then this class isn't for you. Short papers every week, one term paper and a research project. If you don't come to class you will be behind. Lots of quizzes too. Helpful overall if you needed her.
This class last year and it was very interesting and the teacher was extremely helpful. She encouraged us to get help writing. I would not have done this without her encouragement. It helped me in my major which is psych.
Mrs. Wininger is a nice teacher but expects A LOT of work to be done. This class should not have been a first year class. I wrote a lot more in this class then in my enriched college writing class. I tried really hard in this class but never saw any improvement, even when I asked for help. My grades were between 70-80. Just try your best, I guess.
The course description talks about how we would be going into both genders. We've only talked about the female gender and I got so tired so quickly on the topic of females.
This class was hard but I learned a lot. Mss WInninger was there to help and I really liked TA Kay who helped me with writing. Most of the material was interesting but GENDER the book was a drag
This is my favorite class at USM to date. It was hard some work every week but fun. A good mix5ture of Art and Philosophy. The teacher is funny and relaxed. Willing to explain everything even when it was hard like Nietzschie.
This Professor challenged me more than anyone this year some classes were like HS not this one. We saw films on masculinity, femininity, gender in advertising. Read novels, essays, art history. Good intro to colllege subjects.
This was a course in Philosophy and visual Art. The PRofessor was really involved and respected everyone. Great discussions, inteeresting readings, but you did have to attend most classes. Loved it! wish there was a second class on the topic.
This was a very intersting course. We started comparing wht we expected from friends versous what we expected from a lover. Read Emma Goldman, St. Augustine, bell hooks, Aristottle. Very good discussion; one of mu best professors yet at USM. Good sense of humor.
This was my 1st class at university/ It started off slowly, I didn;t like the main text but other readings were great. Discussions fun and heated. We got to write term paper on whatever we wanted. Very fair, very interesting. I'm taking a Philosophy course with her next term.
We read 2 books by women, 2 books by men , 2 books by trans people. So i don't get why the comment about it not being balanced. My Intro to Psych we read only men was that unbiased? I thought she was very fair, listened carefully to everyone, very kind.
This was the 3rd class I took with Dr W and I really liked it. I knew she had been to Africa a lot but nothing about African Philosophy and CUlture so it came as a surprise how interesting it was. I'm in ANthro.
This course was on friendship sex and love. There was some confusion over Blackboard reading but Prof was very flexible. I liked the class very much. I'm taking Phil of Ar in the Fall.
Prof. Wininger enjoys the vagueness of her grading practices and refuses to explain grading procedures or reasoning. Because of this, improvement is limited for the student. If you have a disagreement, she may show condescension as a means of proving her own position of power. For a philosophy teacher, her mind is relatively closed.
K. Wininger is useless in helping students with assignments and constantly refers to materials that don't apply or solve the problem. She simply will not discuss helping students besides telling them to "look at syllabus/documentx)" and will not explain grading. If you expect any letter grade, expect one with a " - "
Took this online: horrible. Expect to have technical difficulties, missing materials and about a thousand useless e-mails. Forget about interaction: she is not at all helpful.
This was one of the most challenging online classes I have had. The readings were difficult but the material was very interestign esp the session on tatooing and culture jamming. Wish I could have taken it in person tho.
Did not think I would like this class going into it. But I learned a lot and it turned out to be a fun class. I liked the Prof, she was funny and approachable.
Loved this class. It was so interesting and Mrs Winninger listened to our ideas. The discussions were ver stimulating.
Very interesting course on Reffugees and the reasons they resettled in the USA. Took it a while ago but I liked it and am sitting in on it again.
Very excited about getting students to interact and actually talk and discuss the ideas, rather than mere boring lectures. Loads of reading (but that's Philosophy), but always relevant and new readings, things one might not expect. Tailored work to needs of students, and went with the flow of the debate. A Very enjoyable experience.
Guidelines are about as unclear as you can get. Always says refer to the syllabus, but that had no information (not exaggerating) on grading. Furthermore, grades are not updated. When I've gone to her for help, she has been vague and not enthusiastic. Honestly, asking questions was a waste of time. Really interesting content and discussions though!
Literally the worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of having. Incredibly unclear when it comes to course expectations and grading procedures. Can't see beyond her own perspective, so asking questions and clarifications is futile. Changes the course schedule on a moment's notice, doesn't provide adequate feedback on papers, if any at all.
Loved this class. i really got to know other students and the readings were different and thought provoking. I changed my perspectives on romance and friendship.
This was a really challenging class. In the beginning I was confused about why we needed to study the Kenyan history but I got it when it was connected to why people immagrate. Loved the lawyers perspectives and TRC.
A passion for the subject, people, and cultures always apparent. Can be a bit confused syllabus-wise, but is very understanding and forgiving when students get confused. Gives plenty of opportunities for make-up or extra credit work, she just wants people to discuss and think.
This was a demanding course but realy interesting. Esp liked weeek about tattooing. I liked the discusssions and the materials but would have rather taken it in person. The course is offered in-person and when I went to that class I liked it more.
This was on Nietshe and was really great. Like a seminar but very engaging.
Great discussions , interesting questions . Will take Dr W again.
This class was 7 weeks and it was non stop from the first week. Interesting material and great questions for discussions but you need to be ready to go!
I had to take this, required for my major. Wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. Especially like performance art, Tatoo section, censorship. Very kind and enthusiastic prof.
She is a disorganized messed with unclear assignments. Her expectations change daily and she never responds to emails. I would avoid her at all costs unless you like to be in a world of pain and confusion. I will never take a class with her again.
She lost our papers, and was unclear 1/2 the time. Though at times she was ok, but overall she kept getting frustrated at us. Never gave enough time on the quizzes and expected us to know the dense reading material. Not very fond of her teaching style.
This class was 7 weeks online bit it opened up my mind to African cultures and arts. I knew nothing about Africa except a little about South Africa and Egypt . This course really opened my mind. Make sure you have time to devote to an intense course to see some great films and read interesting stuff.
Opened up my eyes to the continent! I took this class as a requirement but loved the novels and films . It was a 7 week course so you had to be on top of things but every week is the same so after the 1st two weeks. Teacher got back to me immediately when I had family emergency and needed some flexibility.
I took this in the Summer but had to drop for work took it during 7 weeks - Great class . Much more interesting than I expected. The art was often related to current events and I have been curious about the history of body art - henna - tattoo - guaging. Definitely stillr eading Plato and Nitezsche - it is philosophy but good stuff.
Lot's of small work so you have to be in class for the work. But very helpful outside of class. Took us to the art museum and to 2 plays . We had a lot of fun once the course got going.
phi220 Available by phone or email got back to me vey quickly. I was not so interested the 1st 2 weeks then it took off. The art was really interesting and the topics made me think about what is happening.
This was a course I had to take and it was an odd group of people . Once we go to know eachother I learned a lot. We went to a play together . Teacher spent a lo of time with me outside of class to help me with my writing and because I was sick.
She will talk on and on and on about absolutely nothing. Honestly treats us like high schoolers. Makes no sense
In all of my years of education, literally since Kindergarten, I have never had a worse teacher. She responded to one of my emails, asking for an extension, with simply "ok." I also emailed her to ask her why she kept giving me bad grades with no feedback and she never replied. She is HORRIBLE. Please just don't take a class with her. Don't do it.
Once you get the hang of the course , it is fine but it is a lot of work because of it being 7 weeks. It worked for me because then I could work on my finals for physics and bio. Really liked the art I had never thought about the relation of science and beauty. Good if you are willing to put in the time.
We didn't know what to expect but it was pretty interesting. I had not studied gender before. It wasn't too hard I got to know other students good intro to things in a friendly class
LOT'S OF READING BUT YOU CAN DO SOME AHEAD OF TIME. SHORT NOVELS , MORE LIKE AN ENGILSH LIT CLASS.
Gentle introduction into a world I knew nothing about. There were very short novels and stories. I read two ahead.. This short course helped me finish my larger year end projects term paper and final exam .
I took this course when I needed to finish a big project in my engineer ing course. It was then offered as a seven week course at the beginning of the term. There were small weekly writing assignments but then the course was over -no final exam. It fit in my schedule well the information was interesting even exciting, I knew nothing going in
Great class I had studied a little philosophy but knew nothing about Art. Not expecting to like the topic . The art made it really interesting- it was very diverse and unusual.
