Don't let my grade or other people's grades fool you! This class was a complete mess from the start. Everyone, including TAs, were confused and Burke was no where to be seen/heard. The only reason we kind have good grades is because most things were probs curved and our final exam wasn't graded bc literally everyone failed.

If I didn't know chemistry before hand I would not have survived this lab. My lab partner had a panic attack in class and when she was called in she told him to calm down and doxxed his grade. Hated every moment . After that course I went on to become her TA to try and help people in this class, and big surprise she treats her TAs horribly too.

This class was the bane of my existence. For a one credit class I was probably spending 10+ hours a week doing labs, taking the quizzes, and going to office hours. She blames everything on the TAs. Labs have nothing to do with what we're doing in lecture I have never in my life had to work this hard for a class and it is mental breakdown inducing.

Without a doubt, the worst, most difficult, most time-consuming, stressful class I've ever taken. Spent sooooo much time one each weekly assignment and gained nothing. Can't see your grade until the end, so no clue how I was doing. Absolutely embarrassing to UD and the Chemistry Department for allowing this course to occur in this fashion.

Dr. Burke really sucks. She is rude to her students and doesn't respect them or their time. She writes confusing labs and provides zero support. The TAs grade everything and lead labs so get used to asking them for everything. This lab was ridiculous for a 1 credit class and required 10-20 hours of work per week. Avoid this prof at all costs.

Dr. Kathryn Burke has got to be the worst manager in existence. Obviously knows a good amount of chemistry having a PhD in it but makes the labs nearly impossible to complete and makes you feel inadequate as a student. The TA's run the show so it seems she is just there to be a body attached to the course. Teaches both labs in the sequence 133/134

This class was extremely difficult and time consuming. Labs were almost unbearable and took all day to complete. Literally the most stressful class ive ever taken and only for one credit. Dr. Burke made it unnecessarily difficult and offered no help. TAs run the show and are also wishy washy with explanations.

This was the worst class I have ever taken. The labs are so unclear and the TA's don't know anything at all. When you email the TA they don't respond and when you Email Dr. Burke she doesn't answer them. I'm in this class right now and when I tell you I would do anything to get rid of this class.

At UD, CHEM 103 and 133 are taken simultaneously. I had CHEM103 with Dr. G, and she was absolutely amazing and the best professor I've ever had. However CHEM133, the lab portion, was the complete opposite. Everything about the class was discouraging, time consuming, stressful, and confusing.

BIG NOPE. Constant stress. Doesn't line up with Chem103 lecture (doing labs w/ concepts not learned yet). My 103 prof begged Burke to rearrange labs to line up, and she ignored the request! Even TAs struggle to understand the labs and they're grading them!! Expect to wait WEEKS for your labs to be graded, so you never know your grade all semester.

It is unfortunate to know that for the vast majority of students who take chemistry will have to go through Dr. Burke. The labs are unnecessarily hard, there is little to no guidance, the lab would always be three units ahead of the lecture so no one knew what to do, and there are no lab partners as she discourages working with others. Its horrible

this is my second time having to take her class because she is the professor for a majority of labs. She is never available and often rude when you ask for help. The labs are lengthy and difficult and her final exams are almost impossible. would not reccomend

Do not take this class. THIS CLASS WAS IMPOSSIBLE. This class does not teach you anything and the TA's that's suppose to help you tells you to check out youtube and google for what they're suppose to be teaching you. Any class lead by Burke is essentially trial by fire. Unfortunately she's the only instructor for the GenChem 133 and 134 labs, both of which are required by a lot of majors so it's hard to avoid her. After two semesters I no longer hear the alarm I've set to remind me to go to class, only the trumpeting of Gabriel's Horn. Avoid her at all costs.

Who is Dr. Burke? Honestly, I have no clue and I'm taking her lab. I've never once seen or heard her. THE WORST CLASS ANY UNIVERSITY HAS. Want to learn? Absolutely amazing Dr. Burke still has her job. Her class has been, by far, the most unorganized, stressful, and confusing course I've ever taken. No one in the class knows what they're doing, there's little to no instruction for procedures/labs, and if you even try to reach out for help, you're redirected to TA's who don't know what theyre doing.

One of the worst professors I had. She refused to follow our lecture course and will not give feedback on the grades, it's only the TA's and they barely helped! If you were to email her she would tell you to email the TA's for help. I hope to never meet a professor as bad as her. I hope UD looks at the rates and removes her from her position.

took CHEM103 and 104 and it was the worst year of my life. cried a minimum of 3 hours a day, spent 5-10 hours a week on one lab for 1 single lab credit. labs do not remotely make sense and are on material we hadn't even learned in lecture yet. i have never cried more in my entire life, questioned switching majors, set up for failure.

This was the hardest class I've taken so far. TA's take way too long to grade so you never understand what you're doing wrong. You spend so much time stressing about the lab thats only a 1 credit class that it distracts you from doing well in the 3 credit lecture.

awful. not helpful at all and made online class incredibly hard. labs were set up for us to fail with no directions and no help whatsoever. labs always on topics we haven't learned yet and you cant even access your grade until the end of the semester so you don't even know your grade

The labs are super difficult and I spent at least 4 hours on each. I don't know how I got a B+ because I learned absolutely nothing. The labs were always ahead of lecture too, so I had no idea what was going on. If you can, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Or at least try and get Genova as your lecture professor because she helps with everything.

Grading was unclear, assignments were near impossible You had no clue what your grade was until the last day of class, and no one told you how it was calculated. TAs struggled to understand some of the assignments, so not really sure how students were supposed to succeed. Really tough, took WAY too much time to complete each week.

Worst class and the worst professor I've ever taken. The TA's seem to have been running everything and they didn't even know how to answer questions we had. Every week you are supposed to do an impossible prelab quiz, confusing google form, attend zoom for a concept map and do the neverending and torturous labs. Avoid at all cost.

This class was absolutely ridiculous, I had to spend well over 20 hours a week working on the labs. They are so unclear you will have no clue what is going on and the TAs don't know either. If you reach out to her she won't respond to your emails. I have never seen her or even heard her voice. Avoid this at ALL costs. You will cry every night.

She was very rude and did not even try to help her students during this time of need. She simply did not care at all and I do not recommend her. Shes a terrible professor.

The worst professor ever. She was awful (and obnoxious) when I took her for 133 and I thought since she would be out on maternity for 134 it would be better. It wasn't. DON'T TAKE HER! I should have taken the class at another school and transferred it in. After this awful semester I might leave Udel.

This woman put me through three months of suffering through which I endured endless mental breakdowns at 2am due to having been working steadily since 6 am. She gave you none of the information necessary to do the work and each assignment consisted of endless google searches that turned out to not even be helpful.

Emails were passive-aggressive. I took CHEM133 so I already expected the disaster of a course. I didn't learn one thing and the labs were extremely obscure and difficult. An insane amount of work for a 1 credit class. Take the lab elsewhere and transferring the credit for the sake of your own mental health. Does not seem to be changing anytime soon

Dr. Burke was never accessible by email. Everyone was clueless about the lab content. The TA's tried to help the best they could, but even they were clueless. She pushed the blame on the TA's even though they didn't write the labs. If I had the choice, I'd never take her lab again but unfortunately, she runs gen chem labs :'(

I took an entire class with this professor and not once have I actually seen what she looks like.

After only 2 weeks of this course, I am absolutely defeated, exhausted, and mentally drained. The labs have little to no direction, and are extremely long and detailed. Dont bother reaching out for help, because you will be met with snarky remarks along with none of your questions to be answered. I would rather drop out then continue this course.

I thought the ratings on here might have been exaggerated. I mean, she cant possibly be that bad. She is. The ratings are completely true. One week to do a 13+ page lab that consists of a google form, an unhelpful preparation quiz, and the most unclear instructions EVER. I have not even completed my FIRST lab and I already had a mental breakdown.

If 0/5 was an option, that's what I would give her. You would think UD would see all these bad ratings and do something about it. The reviews are 100% accurate. She is never accessible and her assignments are unclear and confusing. I haven't even finished the first lab yet and I am already having a mental breakdown over this course.

By far the worst Professor i have ever had. Calling her a professor is honestly giving her too much credit. I have never taken more of a joke of a class. Don't be fooled by the "1 Credit" tag attached. You will be spending more hours strictly on these labs which will never match up with what you are doing with your actual lecture class. Directions are unclear and just cover it with ridiculous amounts of work. Drop ASAP, considering switching majors.

insane amount of work. I spend more time doing virtual labs every week than time spent in any other class. Virtual labs are impossible compared to in person you will 95% have a failing grade in this class.

Im auditing the class and taking chem at deltech over the summer in hopes that its better than this. Granted anything is better than this class.

Be prepared to spend AT LEAST 10 hrs on labs each week only to receive a grade no higher than a C. Burke and the TA's are unresponsive in times of need and when you do get a response, don't be shocked if your questions aren't answered and followed by a rude remark. Quite potentially the worst professor Ive had here at UD. She isnt helpful at all. When (or if) I DO get a response for help, shes rude about it and she doesnt help. She just gives you assignments with no instructions. Ive stayed up until 3:15am just doing the lab only to get a 55 on it because she doesnt teach. So drop the class if you can!

Be prepared to spend hours every week on a one credit course with a prof who is completely mia. Im lucky enough to have a good TA for in person labs, but the google forms for the online labs make absolutely no sense. I have never had a class that stresses me out as much as this. To start the week you can expect a pre lab that you wont know how to do. Then u spend the rest of your free time doing the actual lab and questions for it. You can expect to spend 10 hours a week on the (no joke). No one has ever seen Dr. Burke as well. All I can say is Good Luck.

CHEM133 was hybrid when I took it. Dr. Burke is the professor, but we never met her, and she never answered her emails. Your best contacts will be your TA and the CRC. Labs have little instruction outside the written manual and pre-labs on Canvas. Labs are tough, and they are graded harshly, so it is difficult to maintain an 'A.'

Kathryn Burke has been the worst part of my semester. I hated every second of this lab; No one was ever sure about what was going on. There is no instruction and you have to guess your way through it. If there is any way to get out of this class, take the opportunity and save yourself from the 20 hours of work a week for a one credit class.

Could hardly even call Dr Burke a professor with how little she helps her students. Dont know what she looks like, dont know what she sounds like. Doesnt reply to emails. TAs were just as confused as the students. Virtual lab forms are confusing at best and miserable at worst. One of the forms even mocked you if you were struggling on it too!

i have not seen nor heard from professor burke once this entire semester. she has her tas do all of the work, and they also seem to be unsure about grading policies. the lab material doesnt line up with what we are learning in chem103, so you have to do a lot of learning on your own. i genuinely spent 6-10 hours per week on each lab. good luck.

Dr. Burke does not teach the class, only assigns work and expects you to keep up. The TA's have no idea what they're doing just as much as you don't. For this 1 credit class, you'll have between 6-12 hours of work a week. It's all busy work, except you don't understand the work you're doing. When you do understand it, you'll still fail.

This lab honestly made me dread starting each new week. Prof. Burke does nothing but assign extremely hard labs that make little to no sense and don't align at all with lecture. This class is TERRIBLE, and I feel bad for whoever has to take it. Prof. Burke is the worst.

Hard to rate a professor you have never met, but everyone in my lab section and others struggles with this class and without a good group of students to do the labs with you will have a terrible time. Often times the labs are things we have never learned and are expected to know with no help.

I never talked to this prof because lab is run by the TA. My TA didnt help. The lab manual doesnt have good instructions on how to actually do the lab. Its set up in an unorganized way. I just finished my lab final and I have never been happier to be done with a class in my entire life. Be prepared for 10+ hour weeks, labs on stuff you've never learned, and absolutely no help from the clueless TAs or Dr Burke herself (because you will never see her/hear from her)

Dr. Burke has given me a horrible experience with laboratory sciences. She delegates all of the work to the TA's and expects students to know the material before learning it. The lab manual will be your best frienemy, as you will hate how vague it is, but you'll need it for everything. The lab also does not follow the CHEM103 lecture.

I have no nice words for this woman. She is non-existent in this course. Her TA's are not properly prepared and she will not help students! She is instant that no one can cheat on her assignments, so she makes them near impossible to look up, even the basic questions. Relied on Genova's old help videos to just pass this class.

i dont even know who this woman is because ive never seen her. she makes all the labs for this course and half of them dont make sense and is difficult for no reason at all. the amount of work you have to put in for a 1 credit class is INSANE. dont even get me started about the mathshout-out to my TA who got me through this lab all semester.

The virtual labs required so much time to complete them, with practically no instructions. At least 5+ hours were needed to complete the labs each week, on top of impossible prep quizzes. Lab reports were harshly graded by TA's and took forever to be grade. All for 1 credit. Unfortunately I have to deal with her for chem134 next semester.

So much work for 1 credit. Because of it I had less time to focus on other classes. Ended with a B only because the class average is curved to a B. Spent so much time on labs for nothing. Doesn't coincide with chem103 at all. Unfortunately I'm forced to deal with her again for chem134 next semester. Avoid Burke if possible.

Whoever said "I want to give you a zero, but that's not possible. So I give you a 1." That's hilarious. I have nothing to add, except for our queen Genova will be your saving grace. If you don't have her for lecture, find someone who does and get them to forward you her help videos. They are the only reason I passed.

Self taught Lab. 0 instruction. UD does NOT care about tenured prof evals. Tuition monies pay salaries & support campus. Teach for comprehension, student success ; and not for failure and regret . Be proud of your job . Let your students be proud of you Burke. You failed your students and parents and caused disrespect and disappointment.

Genuinely the worst. Condescending towards students, unhelpful and downright mean if you ask for literally anything from her. Would not acknowledge accommodations from DSS. The worst.

Absolutely awful. You never actually see Prof Burke and the TAs do all the grading (and it's terribly inconsistent too!). They say to go to the Chem Help Center but the TAs sometimes just don't show up or they'll be completely unhelpful. I sat in there for 8 hrs one time and didn't get any help. Don't take it if you're not required to.

I personally have never left a review for a professor before, but I felt this one was necessary. I have had Dr.Burke for CHEM133 and CHEM134 and this class is honestly terrible. The TA's are not helpful and do not grade on time, I easily put 5 hours a week into this course for it to count as one credit hour. Do NOT take unless required.

People have been wanting fired and replaced before your mom was born. She is an embarrassment to the whole chemistry department. The way she designed these lab courses makes people fail and she does not care for her students at all. You never see or hear from her. Take your basic chem requirements outside of UD to save yourself.

This is my 3rd semester taking a 1 credit lab with Burke as the lab coordinator, & I am blown away by the insane amount of assignments and projects and hours every single student has to put in for a 1 credit course. I wish UD would listen to the hundreds of students reviews on her, replace her or at least actually read end of the semester surveys.

Course is unbearable

I'm convinced Dr. Burke isn't even real, she does not speak to her students once throughout the whole semester, your TAs will make or break your grade. If you have TAs who are not willing to help you out during lab you will not do well. Try not to have lab on Monday, you will get more help from other students in earlier labs if you're later.

Dr. Burke has been by far the most disrespectful and ignorant professor. She does not communicate with students or care if they succeed. She is not understanding of anyones situation, material is never explained and the labs will take you hours and hours to do. if you do any extracurriculars or have hw for other classes forget it.

Avoid taking any of her labs if possible. I've taken both CHEM133 and CHEM134 and have not once seen this woman. You will have no idea what your grade is for the entirety of the semester and will not have your assignments graded until weeks later. There is usually not enough equipment or materials for the labs and there is little to no help

Worst professor at UD. She's not involved with students doesn't come around unless it's to ruin your grade. Doesn't provide clear grading standards, doesn't provide clear instructions for assignments. No instruction was provided. Don't take this class unless necessary, she will singlehandedly ruin your life. Horrible person & horrible teacher.

My god if you love yourself avoid this woman. labs made no sense to what was going on in lecture and gave no feedback on how to do assignments. u never know your grade until the end and different tas grade your assignment every week so u don't know what grade youll get. tas are useless as they don't know whats going on in the lab either

Ignore the fake reviews, she hardly exists and I have not once seen her face. The content she expects you to know goes way beyond lecture with no instruction for labs; you just show up and hope you figure it out within 3 hours there. I somehow got an A from how much she curves, but spent way more time outside of class than 1 credit would warrant.

Burke makes me want to drop out. Her courses are ridiculous and poorly designed. I'm sure she's aware of all these bad reviews but chooses to ignore them. I would say avoid her at all costs but it's not possible unless you get hit by a UD shuttle.

Lab methods and questions are often written very vaguely, to the point where even the TAs could not understand some of the content. You need to have a different lab partner every single week for whatever reason. I got points taken off of an assignment literally because I didn't draw pictures of the lab equipment in my notebook.

No guidance on work and work book is very vague. If you have to take this lab good luck. Find a friend who knows chemistry.

This class must've been conceived by Satan himself. I would explain how bad Burke is of a teacher, but I've never met her, so I wouldn't know. The sheer amount of work each week is extremely difficult and tedious. The only positive thing that came from this class this semester is that I never have to take it again. I have never hated anything more.

This lady is awful. She is a figment of everyone's imagination and I refuse to believe she's real. Everything is graded inconsistently and there is no communication between professor and student.

No words can describe my vitriolic, defeated rage towards an instructor. Even with Burkes name here on the site, she is nonexistent and rude in her emails. You'd be lucky to ever get TA's who actually give a darn for undergrads to succeed. I pity those who have to strictly take the class as this will make you test your mentality and patience.

How well you do in this class is basically reliant on how competent your TAs are. Wouldn't have done anywhere close to well without them.

Always make sure your PDFs submit properly because there is a resubmission penalty that cuts your report grade in half

The prelabs for this class are so unnecessarily difficult and often have nothing to do with the lab itself. Labs are always ahead of lecture, so students have to teach themselves the material. You will never see Burke, only your TA, and most of the time they have no idea what's going on either. If you have any passion for chem, it will get crushed.

I am convinced Dr. Burke does not exist. You can tell everyone in this class, including the TAs, are grasping at straws trying to figure out what she expects from each assignment, but she does grade on a curve. The lab manual requires you to write a procedure based on the vague information they give you and the work you do relies solely on that.

The preparation assignments are pure hell. You do not learn how to do any of the problems in class because they aren't connected. Even searching up problems google can give you no answers because her assignments are that difficult. She does curve heavily because EVERYONE IS FAILING.

Burke is essentially nonexistent. If your TA's are bad, then you're done for UNLESS you have a strong background in chem. If you truly do just try, then you won't fail. There is a lab final, but it's online. The grading is also a little inconsistent. You could make a small mistake and be fine and another time you could get a -10 for poor wording

I haven't met anyone who isn't a chem lab TA who's met Dr Burke. Chem lab is run 100% by the TAs, so it's just up to whether you get good TAs or not. The TAs do the grading as well, so it takes some time but they aren't overly harsh. The lab manual is a bit confusing at times and barely lines up at all with the lecture material in chem 103.

You are best off avoiding professor Burke if you can. She does not teach the lab herself, it is very difficult, and the lab is ran by TAs. Her name is on the course but I have never actually seen her and I am convinced that she does not even exist. The course is a lot of work and extremely difficult, especially for a 1 credit lab.

To be fairly honest, I would not recommend this class to anyone who doesn't need it. This lab was very tedious and you will never see Prof. Burke. The lab is run by the TAs and sometimes they don't know what they're doing. Different TAs grade your lab reports, so some might be lenient while others might not and the pre-labs were very difficult.

One of the reasons I switched my major. I have never seen her once. Ran/graded by TAs, which results in everyone having a different experience. I had great TAs, but a lot of my friends were miserable with theirs. My TAs even hated her saying that she told them to "grade the students poorly so they receive a good curve." It's curved at the end.

I haven't even seen her face once. She has her TAs "teach" (more like monitor) the entire class & they grade everything. So I l literally have no idea what she does except create insanely hard pre-labs bc they require you to know how to do the data analysis before you have even done the lab. I took chem lab, but never once saw her or met her. The TA's ran the entire lab and most of the time had no clue what they were doing and had to sit down with us trying to figure out the data analysis portions

This course was humbling. You won't see Burke. Course was exclusively TA run. I am new to chem and there were several labs where I had to correct the TA's for giving us the incorrect materials/chemicals. They don't know what's going on and are trained to answer your question with a question. They read the procedure for the first time DURING lab.

I had way more work in lab than I did in lecture and it's only 1 credit. The labs were so confusing and the pre lab quizzes were painful and impossible. She doesn't do anything to help and the TA's never knew what they were doing either.

If you can avoid chem DO IT. This was the worst course I have ever taken. I took chem 103 and chem 104 and both were insufferable.

My second time taking a class with Burke, this class was definitely easier to navigate than CHEM133. Burke is still inaccessible, unclear and her TAs are useless. For a 1 credit class, I easily spent 6-8 hours a week on work for it. As per usual, the lab does not align with the lecture.

Never met her, no idea what she looks like, but I do know she's ruined my mental health for two semesters now. I spent more time on my homework for this lab than any of my other classes while it was worth the least credit. TA's don't teach and neither does she. Her responses to emails are rare.

Although I ended with an A, Dr. Burke is the worst professor I have had at UD. I joined the course 2 weeks late and she was not very accommodating with deadlines/getting into the swing of things. The TAs saved the students in my lab period and even had to figure out how to fix Dr. Burke's labs as some didn't even work correctly. Try to avoid her

This class was unnecessarily difficult. We had to create the labs ourselves instead of following a procedure. If you work in a hospital lab or even in a blue collar chem e. industry job, your superior will NEVER tell you to create your own procedure, that'd be dangerous. Science builds on itself and we should use the knowledge we already have.

Worst lab I have ever taken. It was extremely difficult and oftentimes seemed unfair. TAs helped as best they could but sometimes were just as lost as students. Burke made this lab unnecessarily difficult and in doing so made it very hard to actual learn anything. Only good thing about this course is that it gets curved heavily at the end.

Never saw her once. One of the few times I heard from her was when she emailed the whole nursing class telling us that it would be a mistake if we went to our first nursing pinning ceremony instead of her lab. Labs are graded hard too. I was always in the CRC for labs and prelabs and sometimes the TAs didn't know how to answer the questions

Dr. Burke is a terrible professor. I have sent her multiple requests to meet in person, but she consistently responds to them by saying "ask a TA." Pre labs are difficult, labs receive grades below 50% and she will respond with a passive aggressive email encouraging you to adopt a growth mindset if you try to challenge the grade.

The 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary recognizes 171,476 words and 7,156 obsolete words. None of them can describe how much of a poor human being she can be. (I assume she's off hiding away from the sunlight.) The grading needs to be more consistent. TAs are a hit-or-miss and have yet to learn what they're doing. She should be fired.

Simply put, Dr. Burke is a noncorporeal entity with tenure. Her labs are difficult, confusing, and require a lot of time and effort, and talking to your TAs and fellow students serves as the only way to get closer to meeting Burke's unknown expectations. The only saving grace is the curve she gives at the end because everyone's grades are bad.

Dr. Burke is never there. The chem labs are confusing and you never know what her expectations are for them. Pray your TA's know what they're doing too and ask other students/ past students questions. Your labs will also be a month behind in grading so you'll never know what your actual grade is until the end, which is curved heavily.

this professor does not do anything. it seems like she is just there to boss the grad student TA's around and make them do her job for them. I've spent COUNTLESS hours working on these prelab assignments and of course, submitting my lab report within 24 hours of the lab end time even though I have other things to do within that period. avoid this!

Horrible. The TAs don't even know what to do half the time. I spent minimum of 3 hours on each prelab and 3 hours after the lab finishing the discussion questions that don't relate at all to what we did. You have to make up answers because there are no readings or anything to help. Procedures are impossible to write since directions have no info.

You can't avoid it, so heres how to pass: Get good scores on pre-lab (please), it will help you so much with data analysis. Make friends with everyone and get all of your classmates contacts to help each other. Always ask your TA's questions. Visit the chemistry tutoring center. Neat reports = better grades. Reference appendixes. It will be okay.

This class is one credit and took the most effort out of any of my other classes. Every lab is graded differently and nothing in the class is consistent. There is no clear instruction coming from the professor, TA, or lab notebook.

Literally tries not to accommodate disabilities. Once told a person who was unexpectedly hospitalized and missed the lab that they should have said something beforehand. I had to work 10 hours straight or more to get A in this class. Only gives 24 hours after lab to do post lab so I was lucky I only had one class the next day. Never once saw her.

Pretty sure she literally got the amazing and sweet lecture professor (Genova) in trouble for helping students out with the awful and impossible post labs (Burke helps with nothing and no one has ever seen her). Also purposefully made it so that the lab and lecture didn't coordinate which made it impossible for anyone to understand the lab.

She is good at developing mental resistance to adversity. Has a low tolerance for weak individuals. Is willing to give more work if you would like. Time consuming so you always have something to do.

If you think Burke is bad for gen chem labs, you better hope you don't have to take biochem. She calls this a "guided inquiry," but the only "guide" you get are endless Perusall readings that go way beyond lecture and make no sense. The lab reports take forever so start early. Go to TA office hours for help with procedures.

Who is Kathryn Burke? You literally won't know because I've never seen her in my life. This class is entirely determined by how good your TAs are (they're confused too) Make friends in the class so you'll hate your life a little less. I'm not even completely sure what to write as her review because I never even met the woman. TAs basically run the entire course for her and when you do reach out to her and ask for help her only response is to ask your TAs instead. I'm not really sure what she even does here.

This class was very poorly structured, as the content of the lab did not align with the lecture, making it difficult to catch up with the material at times. The lab preps did not help with the experiment at all, and most of the experiments were even harder. The only reason I got an A- is because of good TAs and the curve that is placed in the end.

I dislike everything about this lab. My TAs took points off because they don't want to spend some extra minutes to understand a new way that I approached the problem (my chem lecture prof said it was correct, just new). I feel like a district 12 citizen trying to fight for my hunger game whenever i have to do the work for this class. Bye Burk.

Her lab is graded entirely by TAs and they all grade inconsistently. This class requires at least 12 hours of work a week for 1 credit which is crazy. The 15 point pre-labs were stupidly hard and the post labs took 3-4 hours. The directions in the lab manual are so vague and not helpful at all. I had to ask my TAs questions every 2 minutes.

Terrible. Unclear instructions and the TAs don't know what she means half the time. The grading is not the same across the TAs, and without the Chemistry Resource Center (which I spent a lot of time at and not everyone has the time) I would not have passed.

This course only is fully left on the TA. Any questions asked in lab were not clearly answered, and the TA seemed to be confused as well. The lab were graded harshly with confusing instructions and rubric. This prof is KNOWN to be the least recommended lab prof, if you can avoid, do it. If you fail, it's okay. Take it again with a NEW professor.

This is the absolute worst lab you could ever imagine. If you can avoid it YOU MUST. It's supposed to be set up as a guided inquiry, but there is absolutely no guidance, never from her OR the TA. She has such specific expectations that are incredibly hard to match and its useless. This lab actually made me nauseous every time I had to go.

If you're able to take a different lab do it. I never saw her once over 2 semesters that I took her labs, and the TA's do all the work for her. Spent significantly more time for this class than any of my other classes, and hated every second of it.

I had Burke my freshman year at UD. I am now a senior, and wanted to see if her ratings were still terrible. Alas, they still are. This was the hardest class I have ever taken in my whole college career. Do not feel discouraged by the work in labs. You essentially have to wing it all. You'll get a B at the end as long as you try on everything.

I don't even take her class, I just have the unfortunate dishonor of having to try and read her Lab Manual! It says in viii last paragraph that they worked very hard to create it. Although I think a fourth grader eating crayons could make better instructions, as well as labs that have a semblance of relation to our lecture and discussion sections

Currently in 2024 fall chem 133 lab. The CRC and its TAs are my saviors. Prelab questions are simultaneously vague and detailed. Very little resources online to explain specific problems. “example problems” give you the question and answer but no explanation on how the answer was found. chem133 lab was the worst class I have taken in my ENTIRE life. don't do it if you don't have to. save yourself. the pre lab assignments were SO BAD, included orgo when nobody has taken it yet, grading is insanely harsh for no reason. it literally felt like they WANTED us to fail. least understanding person ever literally insufferable so unfair run

Have never seen or heard from her-TA's do all the work(they have no idea what is going on either and are very mean). The labs are very challenging and do not match up with the lectures. The prep assignments are horrible and graded so harshly. The pre lab is like trying to decipher code. Im really sorry if you have to have a class with her.

I feel that our lab experience was inhibited because the lectures and the lab work didn't line up. We would do a lab on topics we hadn't learned and then two weeks later we would learn about it in lecture. The lab book was not very helpful and the TA's always had to teach us the content.

U will spend 8+ hours per week doing work for this 1 credit class and live in constant confusion. She will send passive-aggressive emails to everyone if she receives any complaints. About 9 hours a week is needed for a 1 credit course. Grades are due exactly 24 hours from when your lab ends, not at midnight, but precisely 24 hours. This makes it challenging if you have a lot of classes the following day to do the lab work on time. Despite this, grades can take weeks to be given back. This woman is clearly narcissistic, also.

This lab is completely taught by TAs and lacks any real instruction on the material. Is is constantly ahead of lecture, so you will never know what's going on or how to do the problems. Some TAs are pretty helpful with answering questions, but others can make you even more confused. You will need to visit the CRC to pass honestly.

Burke is inaccessible physically and email-ly, she only made the extremely unclear lab manual and then dipped. Entire lab ran by TA's who are as indecisive & unorganized as the manual, + the lab is MILES ahead of the Chem103 lecture. Tedious labs unfair due dates & my grade is as mysterious as Burke's whereabouts all for the low price of 1 credit.

Burke is very well known, and feared, at UD. I was warned before taking this course that she was difficult, but I had no idea how bad it would be. The labs are consistently covering topics which have not been covered in lecture, You will have to teach yourself most of the topics for the labs, and reaching her is close to impossible.

I took Burke's 133 lab as well as 134 and all I can say is NEVER AGAIN. Like 133, 134 is overly complicated and the TA's are rarely helpful. I wouldn't say 134 was better than 133 but it was at least a little bit easier. Chem 104 lecture does match up more with the lab but overall still very confusing. TA's are hard to access out of class

You make your own procedures with zero given information and spend 3 hours in lab without help from her or the TA. Never spent so much time on a class that is 1 credit hour. Worst part of my week. 24 hours to do all the work post-lab is not enough, some labs are extremely lengthy and lecture and lab do not correspond much to try to lean on lecture. By the time you're done lab, you'll be wondering who even is this lady because you never see her. Not a single time. You just get a lab manual and hope that's enough.

If you have the option not to take this class, DO NOT TAKE IT. The lab manual covers topics that haven't been taught in CHEM103 yet, the lecture counterpart. It's very difficult to understand what her procedures are saying and the pre-lab assignments take a very long time to complete because they're hard. I heavily rely on my TA's knowledge and ask for help with many more things than I should need to ask about.

I would highly recommend taking this class if you prefer to take a class where the professor never shows up, is completely dependent on good TAs, if you love pulling all nighters for a 1 credit course, and if you love the bare minimum instructions in a terribly written lab manual. This course was a BLAST.

Terrible class. If you can somehow avoid it, avoid it. Unfortunately not really possible to get around this class but if you can don't take it.

Never met the professor, she wrote the manual for the lab. worst class all semester, somehow labs got harder every single week, the 2 online ones are almost impossible to do alone. The lab material is always ahead of the lecture material, TAs are the only good parts of the class (shoutout TA Ethan monday 8am). I never want to take this class again

Wishing anyone who takes this course the best of luck. For one credit, it's way too much work. You will have no clue what's going on and have to teach everything yourself. I learned nothing beneficial except how to fend for myself. By the time you're done with the course, you will have never seen this professor because it's entirely run by TAs.

I would rate a 0 if I could. Worst professor ever.

Her lab manual makes no sense and her TA's are incredibly confusing. hypothetically if you wanted to read a long review chem133 on that silly card website.

I took AP Chemistry the year before this class, and even so, this class is just bizarre. My TAs carried the class in trying to help us understand the labs, but the procedures are confusing and make no sense, and the pre-labs have organic chemistry (wtf). We never met the lab professor once, either. Just go take this class at community college.

Horrible Class. Fully run by TA's. Do stuff in the lab weeks before we learn it in lecture. Can't see your final grade. Pre-labs are confusing and unclear. Post-Labs take 2+ hours. In whole, it is a one credit course that takes at least 6 hours of your week.

You will never meet the professor, that being said, the labs are time consuming but not all that complex. There is almost always time after lab to stay with the TA and finish the post lab. The class is not bad, just sucks that you never meet the professor, and all correspondence from her is passive aggressive and condescending.

I walked into this lab with the worst anxiety ever, and I am not an anxious person. Would go to the bathroom and feel like I was going to throw up—no guidance in the manual. Good TAs are the only way to do well in this class. If you can take integrated bio and chem to avoid this class, please do it to save yourself from whatever I went through.

You are going to hate everything about chemistry after you take a course with this professor. If this isn't a major requirement, avoid her at all costs.

You will never even see her set foot into the classroom. The lab does NOT align with the lecture and honestly made me hate chemistry. You have to use the textbooks and other online resources to figure out how to complete the analysis because you will never get help from her or your TA.

Who is kathryn Burke?? she is no where to be seen and never has once answered emails. Please someone get rid of her and replace her with someone who cares about the integrity of the school.

She's a myth. The TAs nor the actual students have met her but she writes the entirely too confusing lab manual while providing no leeway for mistakes. I accidentally missed 1 of 10 pages while scanning my lab report and received a 66%. When I tried to explain the mistake, I was told that resubmission grades were automatically 50%. Save yourself.

Get ready to loose 6 hours every week on pre-labs and post-labs. AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE IN LAB PORTION- In short the TAs and you dont know whats going on.

"Use YouTube or other online resources to fill any knowledge gaps" was what was in the instructions for every prelab because the workbook tells you nothing about what you need to know for any of the labs

Worst class at UD. Didn't enjoy any second I was in this lab. DO NOT take this class if you can avoid itttttt. Please. I cried every lab

Hated almost every aspect of this class. She never came to a lab or lecture once. So much work before lab that was required for any idea on what you were doing during lab. Short and strict deadlines for post-lab analysis work. The TAs were great and willing to help, but the curriculum is unreasonably quick and not in line with the lecture at all.
