Kathryn Gessner is a horrible professor! She is very mean and I can guarantee she will cut you down and make you feel stupid. You will regret taking her course because she will make you miserable!
By far the worst professor I have ever had. Makes you feel like an idiot in class and office. And singles people out in class to make them look bad. Also sets you up to fail! Worst experience ever!!!
This is a very nice teacher. I can see why some people would not like her, she can be quite blunt at times. However, she is a good teacher and a nice person. She does take her job quite seriously, but I would take a class from her again.
I was sorry, as well as shocked, to see how poorly Prof. Gessner was rated. I took 1B and 1C prior to taking her 1A class and I learned more in her 1A class then both 1B and 1C combined. She is a great teacher and a wonderful person. If you consider taking her for a class, I highly recommend it!
Overall, Mrs. Gessner is not a great teacher but not horrible either. She focused on environmental books which were completely boring. The research paper she assigns is a nightmare, especially because she goes overboard on MLA format. Also, her mood changes drastically, you never know what to expect from her. Take this class with another teacher.
gessner is one of the harder teachers I'v had, she will make you a better writer or you will fail the class. simple and plain and she doesn't tolerate bad behavior in class period.
Really nice lady and a fun class, I learned a lot. I did have to work hard, but not too hard and it was worth it anyway.
The last english class before I trans to 4yr. If you don't do well in her class, you won't do well when you move on. Her standards are nothing compared to University. I liked her class and liked some of the things we read. She is better than some of the other English teachers I had at Shasta.
Her personality is a bit off the wall. She laughs at her own jokes constantly but can immediately go from laughing to chastising a student. The workload was completely unbalanced throughout the semester and didn't cover a lot of material from the book. I don't recommend her.
She wont take any crap from anyone and isn't afraid to make you look like a fool in front of the whole class. She'll critcize your paper in front of the class with out warning.
She is a great professor who is very animated and has an explosive laugh. She really went out of her way to teach basic things we should have already known. She prepares you for weeks and provides enough brainstorming and resources to find a solid topic to write about. To do well, be there everyday, stay on topic, and have your papers edited.
Katheryn Gessner is a very cruel, cold, judgmental individual who has no business being a teacher. She is uninformed about the material that she attempts to teach and has a very narrow and opinionated viewpoint on the subject, which is reflected in her grading policy. She does not grade on the quality of the papers that she assigns, but rather on h
I felt like there were different rules for different people in this class. If you were a girl you got treated one way, if you were a guy you got treated differently. Grading criteria seemed rather arbitrary and lacked consistency. I wouldn't recommend.
I loved her! she is hilarious and laughs continuously. she is very understanding and her assignments aren't hard to do. If you pay attention to due dates and try to stay on track you will get an A without question. You don't need to be an english major to do well. I'd recommend her to absolutely any student!
People on this site that have rated Kathryn bad are obviously not compatable with this unique, quirky professor. Although her class schedules are not chisled in stone, they are more fluid, she is happy to help any student that asks. I thoroughly enjoyed this Professor & have taken her Creative Writing class & am enrolled in her English 1C class.
I would not recommend her for people who need structure within a class, everything tends to be sloppy and she will pick assignments at random to be worth points.
Nice Funny and willing to help out! I liked her! No nonsence teacher I liked that too!
Horrible teacher. Flaky, mean to students, gives extremely confusing assignments and unclear instructions, then blames students for not understanding her. Do NOT take her classes, you will be miserable.
Ms. Gessner was a great teacher, I read all thease comments and was a little freaked out, on the contrary I belive the people who wrote them missed class alot, if you attend and do the work she makes it fun If you flake out you will have a crappy time but it really is your oun fault.
Hands-down, least organized professor I've ever come across. Has unusual policies, takes the subject VERY seriously, and doesn't seem to get around to teaching anything till half way through the semester. Not my favorite class.
I like this class but feel like she doesn't like to answer questions a lot. I feel like she gets irritated if we don't understad her directions when she told us the first time and kind of talks to us like we are stupid for asking questions. As a result of this, no one wants to ask questions.
Kinda of unfair,a bit disorganized, says one thing but retracts it. And to the statement about the easy grade if you attend class, I havent missed one! And she plays favorites. Was very rude to a student in class bc she asked a question! Wont accept my essay tomorrow, even if I post in online. It will still be late bc she wont have the paper copy!
She is unorganized and condescending to students who ask questions often times. She also grades low even if you try your hardest. However, she is always in a good mood.
For those that enjoy writing : 1A was a breeze and 1C was more of a challenge. Assignments are not listed in detail on the syllabus.Show up everyday for assignments. If you are not socially acceptable (being polite and respectful) you will be encouraged to behave or leave the class. Excuses are unacceptable...your homework your responsibility. :)
Rude. Wasn't clear wit assignments. Did not help students what so ever.
Really clear on assignments. Really helpful with homework and a lot of help on essays. Firm, but fair. Very enjoyable class, want to take other class with this instructor.
Ms Gessner is a very quirky, friendly teacher. Just turn your work in on time & you'll get a good grade. The work load is not consistant. Lots of work at the front & end of semester, not much in the middle. She will assign work & not collect it or assign 6 journals due on Mon & then on Wed ask for 2 of the journals on Thursday.
Teacher is extremely clear on instructions stories relate to instruction just follow closely. Intelligent woman. My recommendations would be to follow her advice to get a good grade in class.
Gessner is a very smart lady who's fair with grading. I'm confused by all the negative comments she has. Her jokes were hilarious. Gessner was a great English teacher for my first semester of college.
Kathryn Gessner is a funny woman. At the beginning of the semester i did not like her and thought that she was rude but after I got to know her I enjoyed her as a professor. She isn't always very clear on assignments so make sure you double check when things are due. Pretty easy class all in all as long as you pay attention and do your homework.
I respect Professor Gessner, but I wasn't much a fan of her teaching style. Her assignments are unclear and caused me some unneeded confusion and stress this semester. Make sure you double check with her. Course work consists of small assignments, group work, rough draft reviewing, and essays. Poetry is her passion, so expect a long poetry unit!
Mrs. Gessner was hard but fair. I learned quite a bit from this class. If you attend class and do not miss more than 4 class periods, then you will get a good grade. If you do the work. For the people who slacked off, she was very hard to get along with. She is a logical thinker and will not put up with not being responsible.
Gessner is a nice lady, but extremely hard in Poetry. I have always received A's in my English classes, but in her class, I was struggling with a C. I took it to learn how to analyze poetry, but she just told us to read the text and do our best. My best wasn't good enough. She expects you to be an expert in the subject already. Very Hard teacher!
I too have always received As in my English classes, but in her class, it was a different story. My best was never good enough & she expects u 2 b an expert in the subject already. She's also very rude & her assignments r unclear. She doesnt help students, she says 1 thing but retracts it, & she plays favorites (usually w/the male students).
She is alright. If you want clarity you need to speak up or she doesn't keep going on what you ask. Her laugh is.. lets just say interesting. Good luck if you take her. I took an internet inhanced class, and it was to say the least.. pretty confusing. Good luck if you got her.
Ms. Gessner is a quirky teacher who tends to follow along bunny trails. She gets off track quickly and doesn't like to explain herself. She enjoys teaching and likes the subjects she teaches, she just doesn't know how to teach them. Expect no help, hard grading, odd class discussions, and several people withdrawing from the class.
I wasn't a fan of Gessner at the beginning of the semester, but i ended up loving her. Whenever we had big assingments due she would meet with us individually and proof read your writing. She also used this time for you to ask questions if you were confused with anything. English is not my subject, but i got an A. If you try, she will notice.
This woman is an AWFUL teacher. She is no help whatsoever and her essays are confusing and unclear. She never responded to any questions I had, or to any of my forum posts. She did however, respond to OTHER classmate's forum posts. She never gave feedback on rough drafts and then expected you to know exactly what she wanted. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!
Her laugh is awesome...
I would recommend Professor Gessner to anyone who wants to learn, and grow as a student. She was always willing to help, she was passionate about the material, and she encouraged participation. We had discussions, not boring lectures. She actually takes the time to read your work, and offered great feedback. Just show up and do the work!
If you come to class and turn in your work, you will get a good grade. Professor Gessner is very fair with grading, and she gives lots of opportunities to do extra credit. She gave me good feedback and I feel like I'm prepared for university level classes since I took her class.
If you are a type of student who wants to better your essays, take this teacher. If you want an easy class and are only taking it to get through your general ed, don't take take this teacher. I got a D on my first essay, but after all her feedback and skills I learned throughout the semester, I got an A on our final paper. She laughs A LOT!
Gessner is a very good professor. She has a lot of experience in her field and is incredibly helpful with all she has to teach. She gives a ton of feedback on work and definitely understands that students are all at different levels of skill. Would recommend.
This teacher is very unforgiving when it comes to grades and the gray areas. There have been times when there was a misunderstanding, either between me or the class as a whole, and she wouldn't admit to being wrong.
If there is an option to take a different teacher than Gessner, do it. If you challenge anything she says then she will rub her masters degree in your face and tell you she's right and your wrong. She is close minded and talks incessantly about her life. Often times she makes the classroom environment uncomfortable and awkward. Be a suckup to pass.
Gessner will not tolerate discenting views or insubordination. As another person here noted, she will rub her masters degree in your face if you disagree. She is also highly irrational, so you better leave logic at the door. Do not take her classes if you can avoid it.
Absolutely terrible.
Honestly I've read the other comments on here and yes it's true that this teacher is closed minded (sorta) and will not admit she is wrong (most of the times). For class, it was 2 hours and pretty much all I remember is her talking about how she made it, and proud she got her degree. She also likes to make her opinions sound like facts.
This woman gets a thrill out of bashing people's work. She graded one of my papers and made such horrible comments on it that I was in tears. I put every ounce of effort into this class and I almost dropped it at one point. I hate that teachers have SO much power and questioning them will only cost you in the long run. She was terrible!!!
Kathryn Gessner is a very caring teacher, who seeks to motivate students to reach for a higher level in various aspects of life and education. She is funny, and delightfully awkward. She can come across a little tough but she always means well.
This professor is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Even when you give 100%, it isn't good enough. She gave me an 8/10 on our first post; we were introducing ourselves.
Kathryn Gessner, is a very hard grader and uses very strong and most of the time derogatory terminology to refeir to papers. She talks about herself a majority of the class period and wastes a lot of class time. Save time, take class online.
This teacher generally cares about the success of her students, and is very passionate about the material being taught. For the most part, as long as you are competent and understand the content you will pass fairly easily; however, she can be harsh when it comes to some grading if you do not understand the assignment.
Truthfully I highly enjoy poetry, it is one of my favorite subjects but the way she taught focused so much more on the terminology. Also be aware of timing, she will give you a due date and time but if its not in early before that time you risk a bad grade.
Took this online and man was it a good but tough class! Lot's of reading for sure but the books chosen were excellent! She has you write a paper each week so be prepared to write a lot but they get easier to do once you get the hang of it. As long as you include every answer to each question she asks you in your paper you'll do fine:)
So many papers! Get ready to write at least 3-4 papers a week.
I have taken many classes during my two years in college, but none compare to the way professor Calkins communicated and gave such details to help me become a better writer. I felt I gained a lot of knowledge in her class. I will definitely be recommending her as a great professor to take a class with. She is very knowledgable.
Professor Kathryn Calkins is a published poet who is also active as both participant and teacher within the larger poetry community; thus she knows her subject matter here. Class was a delight to take with an excellent textbook, interesting assignments, helpful comments from both the teacher and the other students, and plenty of extra-credit.
She is tough. Make sure you use the writing center to help you get through all her papers.
This teacher will assign a lot and hate all of it. The first half of the semester was reading a boring book and having to write basically a paper every week saying why it was an amazing book and if you dont think it was, she will fail you. The second half she doesnt explain and she will fail you for that too. Doesnt explain and grades hard.
I would not reccomend taking this class. A large chuck of the class was spent reading an extremely boring book and writing essay after essays about how great it was. If you dont agree with her, she will mark you down or argue with you in class. She doesnt ever teach writing tips, she just teaches subjects to write about.
Possibly the worst professor at SC, Calkins attempts to control her students as if they were middle-schoolers. She turns short answer questions in the textbook into 1000+ word essays assignments. The books you will read are nothing but victim-complex-heavy trash, but if you don't worship the writing and its author and you will not get a great grade
So much to do for an online class, and many assignments weekly
This course has been really enjoyable, Professor Calkins is so easy to work with and she gives so much good feedback, writes out very clear prompts for essays with multiple options on how to write them, along with her side track stories and really great books to read. Even if you dont like reading the books arent super confusing.
Do the work and youll pass easily, show up to class and pass easily, pay attention and pass easily
Constantly rude to students and always has to be in control of every little thing. Only good part of class is when she gets redfaced laughing at her own jokes (meanwhile the class stays silent). DO NOT TAKE
Poor choice in reading material and resource material. She never explained things or actually taught us how to write better, most of class time was teaching us about things to write about, be it learning about the "wonders of motherhood" or "struggles of minorities." More of a class on her personal beliefs that you have to write about if anything
Awesome professor!
Gives absolutely no feedback and doesn't give 100s for completing the assignment requirements she expects more than she asks for? Doesn't tell you how to improve. Lowest grade of all of my classes this semester. 0/10 would not recommend
I have enjoyed Kathryn Calkins teaching and her class so much I decided to take her again in 1A. In every assignment there are opportunities for extra credit and she clearly states what she wants done. All you have to do is follow her directions, her book choices are fantastic. If i could take this class again next semester I would. Therapeutic!!!
Kathryn's class made me dread going to school. Her lectures were just random ramblings that did not help us learn and then she would assign insane amounts of reading, essays, group projects, and presentations as if her class was the only one any of the students were taking. This class causes so much more stress than was necessary.
She was AWFUL. Shes just plain rude and horrible to you, and thats if you get any acknowledgment at all. She only gives you 100% if you do MORE than required. Thats right! You DO NOT earn 100% on perfect discussions, you must do MORE! Her class was TRULY a nightmare, so warning at anyone reading this; DONT TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU CAN HELP IT!!!!
Professor Calkins is one of the better teachers within the English Department. I found that Calkins mythology class was an eye-opening experience for me as I gained exposure to the myths underlying Sci-Fi literature, myths related to the Quest and Hero's Journey, and Jungian Analysis. If you intend to study lit, then take this class first.
I took the online Creative Writing course. The course work was seemingly easy, but there wasn't much criteria explaining how we could get a 100%. Due dates were ambivalent and so I had a tough time keeping a schedule for myself. Professor Calkins herself gave us interesting material and left thoughtful submission comments, but things could be fixed
Professor Calkins is no doubt unconventional in her teaching style, but its not at all a bad thing. She has a very open class environment, lots of talking around the room, lectures are very loosely structured, which can be hard to follow at times. But she has great energy, is very caring, grades very forgivingly, and makes class quite fun!
Very enjoyable and the prof was so helpful. I took this class and would take it again because she really shows you how to use your writing skills to the next level! Participation matters!! every weekly assignment, reply, and essay matters.
Prof. Calkins' recent reviews have all been high. She teaches you as a Professor but also cares for you as a friend. My first college semester I was very lucky to have Calkins. She can guide you to become a professional famous writer. She encourages everyone and allows you to grow as a writer. I'm already signed on for another course from her Fall.
What frustrated me the most was that Professor Calkins did not give clear instructions for assignments, especially for the final. Another thing to note is that from my personal experience, Professor Calkins seems to grade based on quantity work (the more pages/words used, the better to her) instead of focusing on the quality of your writing.
Ms. Kathryn is kind, fun, and intelligent. I did have to ask a lot of questions as sometimes assignments were confusing. Do a little more than the absolute minimum if you want an A, but generally, you can do well just by showing up and getting something in. No quizzes, free book. Just communicate with her if you need anything. Overall I had fun!
This professor is respectfully the most horrendous teacher I've ever had the displeasure of taking. She doesn't give clear instruction or feedback, and she will fail you with no feedback :)! She is absolutely impossible to reach and doesn't follow her own syllabus! Do not take her.
Hard to understand what was wanted, attendance was mandatory, very little to no sympathy for myself, and some things that occurred during the semester.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD! Assignments make zero sense doesn't give any detail to help with the assignment. A lazy professor as well doesn't help at all. It tells you what to do with the assignment but doesn't explain it at all makes you go thru so many different websites and doesn't even show you how. TERRIBLE don't take ever.
not very clear with instructions, was very hard to understand what was wanted or needed from professor
Wanted to have a fun creative writing class. It was not. Lots of discussion posts that mean nothing. Often contradicts her own syllabus. Unclear grading guidelines. Just take a normal English class if you need the credit because if you want to write anything, then you already know all of her material.
Quick to send you an email when you do poorly on an assignment, but when you need something, she is impossible to get a hold of and never responds. You can think you're meeting all the criteria she's asking for, and still be docked points. Toughest grader out there for a elective poetry class... If you're a busy body, I don't recommend this class.
She is an awesome professor. As long as you show up to her class and engage, she's great. Show her you're trying hard and she grades great.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. The assignments were unclear and the descriptions for the assignments had a lot of typos. The due dates never made sense. Not to mention she gave horrible feedback and would just mark me down on assignments. Overall I will never take one of her classes again and will discourage anyone to take her class.
Good for a creative writing class, could be difficult for others. Calkins is a professor that leaves the student to themselves, so students that have difficulty with loose guidelines may struggle. I found her teaching style a perfect match for my own, she simply "let me cook."
Loved Professor Calkins, she was my first professor ever in college and she really made my first time less stressful. She was also very caring and gave me a lot of tips to be successful in college
lwk sucks. Grades mad weird. does not give clear instructions. lwk a tough grader like fr guys she is very picky. She wants you to use all the literary terms and if you don't she will take points. Quizzes are easy, 3 tries, only 5 points. 2 essays first one is 1750 words second one is 7 pages. Essays are majority of ur grade. Paragraph=10sentences?
Cares way 2 much about literary terms. It just was not a enjoyable class. I took it for my GenEd requirements and I def do not think it was worth all the thinking I needed to do. She cares a lot about her craft but does not teach it. She wants you to go in depth and really feel the subject. If you want to take the class thinking would be fun DON'T
I took this class because it was a requirement. Strict grader which was rough because the instructions for assignments were not clear, I was confused a majority of the time. Had a friend taking the class too and she was just as confused. Textbook is free and quizzes are easy, but the papers were a lot of writing, late work typically not accepted.
If I could give her a zero I would. do not take this class. It's like going against the riddler every week. Her instructions make no sense and if you ask her to be clearer she claims that you don't know how to read.
