At first I didn't think I would like her as a teacher but I stayed in it and she is really good! She is genuinely there to help students learn! I hated English before but now I feel as if she is the first english teacher to actually TEACH me something! Highly recommended! Im taking another one of her classes next semester.
Amazing professor, marks essays at the level that the student is, at which is very fair. I discovered a new found love for literature after taking her class. Highly recommend her.
A really great teacher all around. She is not easy, but very fair. As a guy I found it difficult at times to not day dream about her as she is smokin' hot in the most classy way possible. You will be smitten after a semester with her.
Talked about Oxford more then the course material. Always telling us how much she loves teaching but she talks more about how much she knows then the books.
Excellent teacher! Very passionate about what she is teaching. I'm not very good at English but she made it an EXTREMELY enjoyable and worthwhile class. I will definitely mention I am leaving the class with a lot more than when I came in.
She marks tough, but you can tell she really cares about helping you improve. I had a bad experience with engl 102 (a C) so I was dreading this class, but I enjoyed it. She's funny and likes when you participate in discussions, which I enjoyed doing. I'm glad I took her class.
I found her very rude and sarcastic, every time I participated in class discussions she would just shoot down my opinions, she never replied any of my emails. Also, she's a hard marker so don't expect a free pass. She has pop quizz's that are meant for participation. If you miss one of these quizz's for a real excuse she doesn't allow rewrites.
Kathryn is the absolute best prof I have ever had. She is so helpful, and clearly loves teaching. She goes above and beyond to ensure that her class is interesting and that you understand the material. The final was tough but fair. She is an incredibly fair marker, and gives EXCELLENT constructive feedback. BEST PROF.
I did not like her as a teacher. She is catty and rude. She is very snippy with people in class and forces you to participate in her class. I dreaded being in her class.
Awful Professor. She is rude in class and becomes sassy as times. Class is mandatory because she does quizzes. If you miss one with an extremely valid reason, she does not let you re-take it. Least favorite teacher.
I was dreading this class but i learned alot. It was way more interesting than I thought it would be and Dr. H is hot!
Kathyrn is a good teacher. Se seemed to be a hard marker. There were pop quizzes that made sure you showed up to class. She is too happy at times and loves teaching.
Best teacher I've had in my four years. She boasts a lot about knowing all the facts and having gone to Oxford, but wouldn't you? If you're wrong, she will tell you. If you're right, she will smile. Do your work and it will pay off. Did I mention how wonderful she is? Pink tights for the win.
I did not like her at all. She is sassy and rude. She makes comments that criticize students in class. If you flip through recipe cards for another class, she will call you out... we pay to be there. She has a tone that is angry. She is a hard marker and doesn't respect that it is a first year course.
Kathryn is actually an awesome prof. Her witty comments make class interesting. She does sometimes pick on some people to answer her questions but you're allowed to pass if you don't know the answer. Super helpful and clear in what she wants on essays and she marks fair.
When i first started this class i didnt think i would like Dr. Holland, at first she can come accross as very harsh but if you stick it out you will see she is there for the student and to help you learn. If you take notes and keep up with the readings you will be gold. I dont recommend skipping class cus it could hurt your mark.
Dr. Holland is a really awesome prof. I understand how people may think she is sassy-that's what is so great about her, she is also there to make you a better writer. She has really helped me throughout this semester and I owe her a big thanks! She's always there to answer questions as well. Fun class to attend!
Kathryn is one of the best professors I have ever had. This was her first time teaching this class and it ran smoothly. 3 hour lectures flew by because she incorporates so much class discussion and she hands assignments back so fast! I want to take another class with her because thanks to her I now have several new favourite novels!
Dr. Holland is one of the best professors at MacEwan University. 2 three hour weekly lectures flew by and she hands back papers so fast Her class discussions helped me so much when it came to tests and papers and this was her first time teaching the course Some of the novels she chose for the course are now some of my all time favourites.
Notes are super clean and useful and makes lecture easy to follow and somewhat interesting by getting whole class involved. Definitely go to class and She is a very tough marker, a little unrealistic for first year course but oh well. Very good teacher
Dr. Holland is definitely a professor that I would like to have again. She's very clear on her expectations for your assignments and is very willing to help you when you need the help. She definitely tries to make the classes fun by cracking jokes where she can. Appreciated her as a professor.
I loved her as a professor! Still one of my favorite classes to this day. If you work hard in her class your marks will reflect that, and she is always super willing to help. Assignments and expectations are clear and she makes the class fun and interactive.
Dr. Holland was super knowledgable about all the content. She marks hard, but if you work hard on the papers you should be OK. I would take her class again, she's funny and smart and makes everyone participate. If you skip class you should do fine, just as long as you bust your but on the papers.
I adored Kathryn Holland. I've never been one for english classes, but I found myself looking forward to going to her classes. She has a strict no phone policy, but I found myself not minding, and actually engaged in her lectures. She's passionate about english, give good outlines for assignments, and it more than willing to help students out.
she is a very sassy and rude teacher. she makes you participate in her class but she's passionate about english and actually teaches it. other than this she's a very tough grader and needs to slow it down on first year students. bottom point, i will do anything to avoid her class.
I absolutely hate english but she made it bearable! I though I was going to slide by with a C but she's a pretty fair marker than what people make her out to be, I ended with a B+. I would definitely take her class again, too bad she doesn't teach english 103. You should attend her class though.
Kathryn Holland is a great prof. I am in BSc and I was dreading taking english, but surprisingly I dint mind attending her class. She is very thorough in explaining what is expected of you but does expect you to participate in class discussions. Overall would take a class with her again!! You can tell she loves her job.
I love Dr. Holland. Even for the people who don't care for english, can definitely enjoy it and not mind going to her classes. She is SO genuine and cares so much about her students, and wants you to do your best. She explains everything really well, and helps you with everything to make writing easier. Love her.
Dr Holland is very smart but I found you have to learn from other students rather than her expertise. Most of class is spent on forcing students to explain the literature which is is not helpful at all. you have to learn from the awkward rambles and guesses of the students. Also kind of condescending
Did way better in Dr. Holland's class than in high school. She tells you exactly what you need to do and how to write excellent papers. Going to class is really important because she does pop quizzes but they are literally free marks so it really isn't something to worry about. Her lectures did not drag on. She is a great prof!
Love love loved her! Would definitely recommend!
She is awesome, taking her class again for 103. She's tough but fair, and always made class fun. She inspired me to really appreciate English, and what it has to offer. She assigns readings that are interesting so you enjoy doing your homework. One of my favourite profs, for sure!
I really liked her lectures but when I received C- on the in class I was blown away. Second paper I got B+ which was motivating so I worked my ass off for the third and final paper and only got B-. What? Very tough grader.
Such a good teacher! Ended up with a B plus
Ive always enjoyed writing and have generally been very good at English, but Dr Holland made writing unenjoyable for me. I got a B in this class, but worked my ass of for it. She likes a particularly structured essay, which leaves no room to explain your ideas and thoughts. It was struggle b/w being too general/vague and too specific/disorganized.
Dr. Holland is very knowledgeable. However, I found that I didn't really learn anything new and her lectures seem to drag on. She is very passionate and enthusiastic about the material she teaches, but marks very hard. I was an AP English student yet disliked nearly every minute of this class, just trying to keep decent grades
I found Dr. Holland 's personality one of the hardest aspects of this course. She is rather patronizing and grating at times towards students. I find for English in general it is tough to get a high mark due to the fact no ones writing is ever good enough but for Dr Holland no ones writing ever succeeds expectations which is demotivating & futile
Dr. Holland is very enthusiastic and devoted when it comes to English. However, her class is spent forcing students to participate, which I found hypocritical after her personal introduction. I feel her expectations for first year students is very high, which makes it hard to be motivated in her class. I would not recommend for first year students.
Super difficult. Would not take
horrible class, garbage notes. she's jjust gonna give something in the 70s everytime.
Going to class isn't mandatory, but definitely worth going as she gives you good points that help with the various writing assignments. No final exam, only an in-class summary, but you got a "cheat" sheet, which was helpful. If you make the effort, she makes the effort. Would take again. Also, the essays were online, sparing us another textbook fee
Going to class isn't mandatory as its basically going over the power point which you can do yourself, also she doesn't give marks for attendance and participation, but still picks on students and expects participation. Also tough marker, and gives pop quizzes.
She's a fun prof and the class was interesting. We got to choose our readings in September and Dr Holland gave solid feedback on papers. We could say 'pass' if we didn't want to comment in conversations.
I took 102/103 with her. I'd do that again because discussions were thought provoking and my writing improved a lot.
Holland really cares for her students and their success. She replies to emails quickly and is willing to help/give advice before she grades papers. She is very passionate about English and I enjoyed her lectures. Also tries to involve the class lots and takes the time to learn names.
Really clear and helpful and she gives Quality feedback, Would recommend.
I can confirm that you should expect something in the 70s every time. I found her to be really patronizing and catty as well. You should avoid this professor.
I loved this course with Dr Holland. She was friendly and memorized names, which made us feel involved. Fair marker and readings were really interesting.
Clear grading criteria. Very defined expectations, which meant writing was a bit dry at times. Tough marker, but gives good feedback so possible to improve progressively. Lots of reading, occasional pop quizzes. She puts effort into engaging everyone in class discussion and is open to different interpretations of the literature.
Kathryn is a very sweet lady who cares about her students a lot. The only thing is that she marks pretty hard.
Based on her reviews I thought she'd be a nice for an English prof but I can confirm that no matter how much effort you put in you will always land within the 70's which is annoying considering the invested hours into assignments. Decent personality but can be patronizing.
I had her for English last term, I worked hard and went to her office hours. No matter how hard you try on a paper, you'll always get somewhere in the 70's. She gives lots of chances through the term to boost your mark through easy assignments, but she is an extremely tough marker for papers it almost depletes my motivation to do well with her
Kathryn Holland is a fun prof with engaging lectures. The texts are all engaging and the class gets to choose what to read. However, no matter how good or bad your paper is it will always end up in the 70s range (which was okay for me because that is what I was aiming for) but getting a mark higher than that is difficult.
She was easy to talk to and I enjoyed her class.
Dr. Holland is simply inspiring in class. She engages very well with her students during lectures, and provides clear instructions on how to tackle the essays she assigns. You can easily reach her outside of class, whether its during office hours or through email she will reply almost immediately if shes free.
Dr. Holland is a very sweet lady who cares about how her students do in class. However, her lectures are extremely dry and I didn't feel like I learned a lot from her. She is a fair marker, so you do have to work for it if you want a better mark.
good person, funny, caring, felt like we were back in elementary (no phones allowed, no talking, need to fully pay attention to her and others), will call you out on things and will pick people to answer her questions. if you do good, you'll simply get 70-80%.
Basically an english class pretending to be gender studies, every class is a passage analysis. Kathryn will ask for your input and then interrupt you to share her own perspective. Quite patronizing. Avoid.
No matter how interested you are in Gender Studies, AVOID this professor at all costs. She is extremely condescending and just likes to hear herself talk. We haven't learned anything yet and it's October.. It's basically a high school English class..
Loved having her as my professor! She can speak very fast, so note taking can be difficult at times. Be sure to do the readings otherwise you won't be able to keep up in class. I quite enjoyed her lectures and looked forward to class. She encourages discussion, but you don't have to talk if you don't want to. Great person, inspiring & compassionate
Kathryn is brilliant, if you do the readings and apply yourself this class can be super easy. She is very fair despite being a tough marker. If you're passionate about feminism you will love this class!
Kathryn Holland is a great prof! I really enjoyed Gender Studies- however, I suggest not taking if you dont like English or are not strong in it, since this class is pretty much straight passage analysis. I found she is a tough marker, but fair. Very approachable, and kind!
Kathryn Holland is an extremely tough marker and can come off as condescending towards students. If you're strong in English and have a passion for feminism, this is the class for you, but be prepared to work hard for decent grades.
A few small analysis paragraphs, and a term paper or un-essay option and a final exam. The un-essay is super fun, and we all collaborated on the final exam and she gave it to us a week before the test, open book, and let us bring in a cheat sheet of what we wanted to write. This class can be super easy if you engage with the texts!
There was so much to this class: Reading, writing, participating. I felt like I was always lost in the readings, I had to re-read them at least three times and the print was small. I loved our lectures, but there's an extensive amount of work required and understanding needed. I don't recommend this class if you're looking for an elective! AVOID!
Kathryn was amazing! I would take more of her classes if I could. Her lectures were great and she's very knowledgeable on what she teaches. She's very caring and involved with her students. I really loved her class.
She comes across as condescending and rude but I think she is just blunt. She is a really hard marker. Get ready to read your life away. I would not recommend taking this course if you have five other courses.
Dr. Holland is one of the few good English profs at MacEwan. She gave a good selection of readings, gave excellent feedback in sessions, and allowed us to participate in interesting discussions. Her class is a good class to take if you enjoyed English in high school but aren't majoring or minoring in it.
I really enjoyed her class as she came across as very caring and made an effort to learn everyone's names. She was engaging in her lectures, which was nice, and she allowed students to choose what we wanted to read throughout the course. She does mark a bit hard but if you listen to her feedback and attend class (pop quizzes!!), you will do well.
Such a good prof. Mainly uses lectures to analyze texts. She does spend alot of time on writing habits (ex: learning how to use a comma). I had maybe three pop quizzes, not difficult at all, easy marks. Just make sure you attend class so you dont get an incomplete on the quizzes. There's also no midterm or final for her class so that's a plus!
Kathryn is an amazing prof. She is really passionate about English and cares for her students and it shows. I took two classes with her and choosing her for both was worth it.
She is a great prof to have, she calls on you randomly in class but you can pass if you don't want to speak, she has a way of making you feel comfortable while speaking in class. She is so kind, respects you and takes the effort to know your name. Attendance is not needed but I recommend going, some pop quizzes not many, helpful feedback on work.
Generally was unhelpful with explaining concepts or expectations. You are pretty much stuck with trying to figure out for yourself what is required for topics and hope for the best as she is incredibly disengaged from the act of actually teaching.
Professor Holland gives unhelpful feedback on papers and extremely rigid essay guidelines. She basically has an essay in mind already and if you don't write it exactly how she would, she'll give condescending feedback and rewrite it for you instead of clearly explaining concepts. Horrible teaching style, prefers to talk at you rather than with you.
Dr Holland is great. This was my first online course and I really enjoyed it. She gave feedback on rough drafts and answered questions fast. Be prepared for some sarcasm but she is there for you and is very understanding.
I loved taking Holland's course during the pandemic because she formatted the course in a way that felt reasonable, captivating, and fun! The course content is exceptional and interesting and Holland's availability and creative mind make this course awesome. Gives creative liberty, flexible course material, reasonable grades, and caring instructor.
She's very caring and gives an effort to make sure everyone is on the same page. Would definitely take a class of her again!
Very sweet prof. I hate English, but she somehow made it one of the most interesting classes I had in my fall 2020 semester. Made it very easy to complete online and was very accomodating/understanding. Cares about her students and really wants you to do well. Cannot recommend her enough.
She is very knowledgable and kind but marks papers very hard but accurately, she just has high expectations. She gives detailed and helpful feedback on all assignments and is happy to help students outside of class time. I would definitely recommend her just be ready to work hard to get good marks on papers!
She's doesn't do online lectures, she does maybe 3 within the term. Prepare to be living and breathing only English with the amount of homework given.
Be prepared to cry a lot. She expects an insane amount of work to be done each week, projects/essays have extremely unclear guidelines, and require so much more time than is given to complete them. If she doesn't like your idea/you don't understand a concept, she'll make you feel like an idiot and be incredibly condescending. AVOID.
Dr. Holland is a wonderful professor. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about several fields. She made the classroom feel like a very safe space for intimate conversations about abstract, provocative concepts. Her testing is also non-conventional. No MC tests, and the final is the shortest assignment.
I am a huge fan of Dr. Holland and I think she is an amazing professor. You can tell that she cares about her students and wants everyone to do well. She has high expectations but if you put in a good effort, you will do well. The feedback she gives is super detailed and clear. If you're interested in improving your writing, take her classes!
Professor Holland gives unhelpful feedback on papers and all her assignment guidelines are not very clear. The lectures are kind of pointless as basically all the class time was spent answering individual student questions which were not applicable to me. Not a fan of this course or her teaching style.
Dr. Holland is very caring and answers emails with useful feedback. She marks quite difficult and I found it very hard to achieve over 80% on the papers. There are only 3 major assignments worth a lot of your grade and her grading criteria was sometimes not clear and her feedback when she marked was not always useful. The textbook was used twice.
I feel like a lot of her negative reviews are based on people who needed English as a credit rather than studying it specifically, which is unfortunate because Dr Holland was a very enthusiastic and inspiring professor. Lectures are mandatory because she's a very engaged prof and most lectures take the form of discussion, and participation helps.
I used to hate English in high school and was very nervous to take English in university however, Doctor Holland made me really enjoy this class. She explained everything we needed to know and was always ready to answer questions. She does weekly discussion board posts which I actually grew to enjoy. I recommend following grading criterias.
Dr. Holland often cold calls on the students, she is alright if you want to pass, but it is often anxiety inducing when having a bad day and just wanting to listen in class. She is very talkative and smart, but interrupts students often which a few students felt to be disrespectful. Overall, she was kind and accepting.
She is awesome I love her. :3
Ms.Holland was very rude and wasn't a very interesting professor. Going to class is mandatory if she tells your class about random quizes throughout the semester but other than that nobody really went. She was very tough grader and she was kind of scary. Other than that, she was okay
Just an amazing professor overall, she's extremely knowledgeable, kind, and confident. Overall, I wouldn't say her lectures are mandatory attendance but they are wonderful if you want the chance to listen to a person who really understands what they are talking about. She also allows for class discussions, which make class time engaging.
tough marker on assignments and can be rather large assignments too. easy and interesting lectures. definitely recommend when doing gender studies
Dr. Holland has been pretty good. Ive never been a fan of English but this class felt straight forward. Her slides/presentations are clear and super good to refer back to well doing an assignment. She has high exceptions for work but if you put in some effort you will be fine. She can seem condescending and intimidating. Don't be late to her class!
Good prof overall, found lectures a bit boring but enjoyed the assignmnets. 3 assignments and some quizzes determine your grade. No midterm or Final Recommend this prof, she was one of the first I met and was really nice. Attendance not mandatory but you need to go on the days you do the peer review, as it matters for your grade partially
Dr. Holland is, in short, a terrible professor. Despite teaching extremely easy concepts, she refuses to grade highly, and provides uninteresting, poor feedback. She is a highly biased professor. She rewards more outgoing students despite providing worse writing. After reading other student's works, it is clear that she has no idea how to teach.
Dr Holland def likes to have group discussions and group work, if you're not into that I would suggest avoiding this prof. she doesn't answer emails and does not give good feedback on papers. she wasn't a terrible prof but her lectures were not enjoyable to say the least. the coursework is very simple and easy though. easy class to pass.
Kathyrn is very rude. She makes you feel like you should know about stuff before she teaches as if everyone in the class loves poetry. Barely 5 people spoke in our class all the time and she didn't put in any effort to encourage others. It feels like she is biased. She is a tough grader so I would avoid her
Kathryn is a very engaging professor that encourages her students to think critically. I did miss quite a few classes but it was fine in the end. She marks a bit hard but overall not horribly. I recommend her and this class.
She is an amazing prof. I would recommend her to anyone that wants to enjoy university ENGL.
Dr Holland is friendly, funny and lively. She encourages class participation but is considerate if you just want to listen. Her expectations were very clear and she provided a lot of time for questions. We had to submit our rough work, which was a bit awkward, but the assignments were interesting with flexible topics, and her grading was fair.
She encourages interaction and discussion in the classroom which can by fun. Concepts are explained clearly and she doesn't have a problem shooting down false ideas. Her grading is fair. Show up to class on time or you won't get in lol
No midterm or final, submitted 3 papers. Engaging class, encourages class participation and group discussions. I would recommend to attend class meetings prior the submission of the paper because she discusses the material thoroughly which is a huge help! Gives good feedback but a little bit of a tough marker.
She was sooooo awesome and her lectures were so engaging you actually wanted to be there. She gives good feedback and grades fairly too. Such was a sweetie, and I would for sure take a class with her again (I don't even like english but I loved this class).
She is so awesome as a professor. There's only one major assignment per month which was nice cause I could focus on other classes. She really cared about her students and would always stay after class to give good feedback on your essays in progress. I would definitely recommend her.
Did not respond to emails and had obvious favourites , says you can skip if you get called on but that isn't true she pushes you to answer even when you do not know or are not comfortable sharing with the class
Very rude professor and prejudiced. Will not like you for no reason at all. Had to drop class due to her bullying.
This prof is extremely prejudiced and blatantly rude. Had to drop this class due to intense bullying received from her.
Prof. Holland's class is a mix - engaging discussions but can seem intimidating. Papers are tough to grade, but the work is straightforward. Definitely use resources like unstuck study to prepare, as the feedback can be lacking. Overall, a decent class if you put in the effort.
I promise you will not regret taking this class. I loved Dr. Holland, she is so understanding, passionate and caring about each individual and their work. I never really liked English until I took her class. I would take another class with her in a heartbeat. Only thing is attendance and participation is graded, but she is very understanding.
Dr Holland is my favourite prof ever. She's incredibly smart and most of all, caring. She cares about the success of her students and takes time in and out of class to help you prepare for major assignments, and is a very easy grader, she will give you really good marks if you deserve it! I admire her passion and dedication to teaching.
I loved Dr. Holland. English was never my favorite, but honestly I would take another English class just to have her as a prof. Her discussions are so engaging and the course material, as well as the assignments, are extremely enjoyable and foster creative and analytical thinking. Just show up to lectures and say something, it will do you good.
Great professor and great class. The material was well curated and the projects are well-suited to the course and material, and not too hard. She gives great feedback and in-class and out-of-class help. The discussions in class are so fun and engaging
