Great teacher, humorous, really knows her stuff and makes class enjoyable. Very nice and flexible. If you go to class and pay attention you will do very well on the tests. Enjoyable class.
Only night class I ever had that I actually looked forward to attending. Great teacher, very fair. Knows her stuff and presents it in a way that makes you want to learn it.
the best and easiest class to fulfill history of civ GE credit. very enthusiastic and fun teacher. Tests were so very do-able. If you listen in class you will do well.
Very cool teacher, just show up to class and pay a little attention and you should do fine. Just do the homework and you will get good grades. Tests are cake as long as you listen.
If you go to all the lectures the tests aer cake. Only 2 papers and you get the criteria for them at the begining of the semester, and they are also easy if you follow the instructions. She has a dry witty humor that is great, and I loved going to this class every day.
Great teacher, made i t fun in every way. Cracks a lot of jokes that seem to blow past most of the class but if you listen she's really very funny
Everybody else has already said it: Great teacher who makes class fun and teaches you. Has fun and follows her rules. Defines criteria well and makes it a pleasure to go to class.
Absolutely excellent. Brought homemade cookies a couple of times. Her class inspired me to go for a Humanities minor. As I move toward graduation, I feel like after I forget all the bad stuff, her's will be the class I look back on and think "Wasn't college great?"
great teacher great class
Classy, intelligent lady. Did justice to an interesting subject. Interested in what she taught. Interesting assignments. Highly recommend.
Fantastic teacher!! Never, ever boring. The passion she has for the subject is very apparent and inspiring. Very intelligent, honest, and helpful. She can be somewhat harsh on grading, but aside from that, I absolutely loved this class!!!
Great teacher.
Best professor I have had in college!!! For the most part class was interesting. Her tests are easy as long as you go to class and study. The assignments you have are mostly fun. She is very helpful and will work with you if you have any problems.
She is a great lady - super young and energetic. She knows the material well. Tip for tests: pay attention to the little details she says like about artists and musicians (like lifestyle, etc.). Her tests are fairly easy if you go to class and read. So go to class and read and get at least an A-.
Hilarious and so knowledgeable! Makes the class so fun. This is my fav. class and I have learned so much. There is a fair amount of work but I have never felt overwhelmed and I couldn't recommend a better teacher.
I took this class with this professor because everyone said she was a great teacher and the class was easy. I hated this class. The tests are really hard. You have to go to all lectures and take good notes or else you'll have no chance at doing well. No clear expectations, especially for the papers. Busy work. Good luck if you decide to take it.
Wonderful woman and teacher. Had her for two semesters. Go to class and take good notes. Memorize things for the exam and it's cake. Other people who say her class was hard need to get real and understand college is not a cake walk. I totally recommend her
She is an amazing teacher. She teaches so well and draws you in to the material. Going to class is madatory and you have to take REALLY good notes. I skimed most of the reading in the literature book but and did well, the big exepensive picture book is necessary. Easy GE. Loved this class!
Funny lady, she makes her subject really interesting. I enjoyed her as a teacher and I enjoyed her class, however, I wish we got more explanation and feedback on papers and tests. Those always seemed a little ambiguous. You must work hard in this class, but its worth it.
If you need a class to fulfill your Classical Civilization G.E., then Sis. Isaak is the best teacher to take them from at BYU. She teaches you a lot, has a moderate amount of work (fair for a 3 credit class, unlike some Civ. Classes), is a great deal of fun to listen to in class. My favorite teacher (along w/ Byron Merrill) at BYU.
Awesome professor. Class attendance MANDATORY if you want to pass a test. Take really detailed notes. Helpful in preparing you for test. Gives a study guide. Tests were super easy with little studying. Papers were hard but doable. Easy A or A-
Professor Isaak is the an excellent professor, I loved her class! Class notes are essential for passing exams, whereas the info in the book is not as heavily tested on. I love Professor Isaak because she really cares and that helps her to teach clearly, and inspire.
Good teacher. Go to class if u want to pass. Textbook doesn't provide nearly the information you need to pass her tests. Have to write a couple papers, don't make them fluff or you will pay. Managable class. Use study guide and class notes to prepare for tests
I love Sis. Isaak! She really cares about what she teaches and makes it fun and interesting for everybody. She loves class participation, so don't be afraid to raise your hand. her tests aren't hard at all if you go by the study guide. Most of everything you need to know, you get in class, so reading the book isn't necessarily mandatory.
I loved this class, but sometimes her comments didn't didn't match up AT ALL with her grade ("great paper! really, not too many suggestions! 83%"). I did feel like I became a better writer by the end of the semester, though, because I became her friend and KEPT ASKING QUESTIONS!! Make use of her office hours!!!
Kathryn's course is challenging and educational, but definitely do-able. You will read & write quite a bit, but the it's all really interesting - even the projects are good. Her tests are absolutely fair, but challenging. Class discussion's not a big thing with her - mostly lecture - though she does let you make comments and will respond.
WONDERFUL teacher, though initially very confusing. You ABOSOLUTELY have to keep going in to her office hours to clarify things. Once you understand her a bit better, she can help you become a great writer. This was a wonderful class!
Kathryn has a challenging, interesting, educational, do-able course. Lecture is mostly her talking, but she doesn't mind if you want to make a comment or ask a question. You'll read and write quite a bit, but it's good reading and engaging writing topics. Even the projects were well worth it. Overall, great.
Kathryn Isaak is a wonderful teacher. Her lectures are very interesting and made me excited to go to class. She is very witty and has a great sense of humor. The best part is that her tests directly reflect what she taught you in class. So as long as you go and take good notes and read, you'll do excellent on her tests. I loved her class.
She's cool and makes class fun for the most part. Sometimes her comments don't match up with the grade(ex. I had a paper with a lot of comments pointing out flaws in my arguments and pretty much bashing my stance, but somehow I managed a B) She assigns a lot of work but is pretty lenient with due dates. Very helpful if you go to her for paper help.
Isaak is awesome. She grades fairly on papers. Her tests are straight forward if you've done three things. One memorize the works she lists on the study guide, two go to class, and three take good notes.
Best Humanities professor I've taken so far. She's way fun and hilarious! Classes will never be boring. Do you reading (sparknote), go to class and studying for the test should be a cake. Going to class make a huge difference, so don't miss. Writing assignments are fun and productive. I recommend her 110% Love her!
She's nice, and I can see how B students like her. I'm not so happy with a B, so I found her grading annoyingly ambiguous. If you enjoy memorizing useless details about things that you forget as your spit out onto the page, then her tests are fine. The papers are really annoying to write. Take a different Civ class, this one's not worth it.
You don't actually have to read from the Culture and Values textbook, just the Norton. She'll give you good feedback on your writing. She has a good sense of humor. I could have swore she was in her 20's on the first day of class. Predictable exams (memorize and regurgitate). She makes treats for class on special days.
I really enjoyed this class. Wonderful teacher; really passionate about the subject. Don't stress about the reading; if you don't have time, just don't do it (Sparknote it all). Go to class and take good notes, and you will do well. Tests are hard but do-able if you study. I previously hated humanities (accounting major), but I loved this class.
Sister Isaak is hilarious and facilitates good discussions in class. She corrects everything herself because of the small classes. This is great, but at the same time she does not have a ton of time to help you with papers. Sometimes I wanted more guidance and had to meet with her outside the scheduled help time. She is very pleasant. Solid class
Good class! Use her office hours. She made sure to make comments on your paper so that you wouldn't get docked points and you didn't know why. She brought food a lot :) Her final was easiest of all time: write a poem, which is outlined and graded on completion. Funny and helpful face to face, and changes due dates if she tells the class needs time.
Really interesting class. It's not hard per-say, but it is a lot of work in comparison to other classes I've taken like this. There are frequent reading assignments, each with a short essay due with it. 2 big essays that require some outside activity or project as well. Tests are fairly straight forward--lots of memorizing required though.
Wonderful class and teacher! She is hilarious and very down to earth and gets to know her students. gives good feedback on all papers and is willing to help. Classes were fun and interesting and she would bring delicious food for us a lot!
Great professor, tons of reading, come to class and study for the exams and you'll do fine. She does test on composers, artists, era so make sure you know pretty much everything on study guide. Class is time consuming but if you attend and do the assignments you'll do fine.
Helpful, works hard to develop relationships with students. Tests are extremely difficult but come straight from book and lecture.
She made class enjoyable because she has the beset sense of humor. You didn't even need to read the textbook because she told you everything you needed to know on the test. I would definately take another class from her.
She makes class really fun and enjoyable. However, she is a hard grader when it comes to papers. If you like writing, you will love her class. She is very clear with her teaching. Attend the lectures because her tests contain material from the lectures.
Look, people. We're in university. You SHOULD be going to lectures and taking good notes. And you won't be sorry. In addition to my notes I have funny quotes Prof. Isaak has said during class- she makes it fun! I thought I'd hate these GE's until I met her and she was awesome. Not intimidating at all and pretty fair. highly recommended.
Great professor. Makes lectures applicable and interesting. Make sure you go to class, and if you miss, get the notes from someone. Her tests aren't too bad, just make sure you memorize the slides she gives you.
Here's the deal. Professor Isaak is way cool and I like her a lot. Her lectures are fun and interesting but I hated the grading in this class so much. I really felt like it was impossible for me to get an A. I felt like the exams were a bit ridiculous and I got the worst grade of the semester here(B-).
Great way to get a GE out of the way. The class is laid back and she makes sure that you know when due dates are and is flexible. Don't bother with the textbooks, they're unnecessary. Lectures aren't mandatory but useful. She is funny and makes class personal. This is not a stressful class and very doable.
Professor Isaak is so cool! I love her lectures, she makes them interesting and enjoyable. The grading in this class is fair even though the tests are hard. She provides adequate study guide material for the tests though, and if you fill them out you'll be fine. Highly recommended.
I loved her humanities class! She has such a funny sense of humor and her classes were always so fascinating. I really didn't think the tests were all that hard, either. I would definitely take another class from her if I had the chance.
Professor Isaak was engaging and very helpful! She is the best teacher I've had at BYU, and her work load isn't too bad either. No comprehensive final, great and funny lectures, and a very positive classroom experience!
Prof. Isaak is very down to earth and passionate. Class was time-consuming but work tapered throughout sem, which was nice. Reading + writing assignment roughly once a week. 2 big projects that were very intimidating but I got through them. Exams are easy to ace as long as you study what she gives you - MEMORIZE! I would def take from her again!
Preofessor Isaak is awesome. She is just so likeable and intersting. She is quirky and adds her own experience to the subject matter which makes it more interesting. You dont need to go get the book. Everything from the test comes from lecture. But take GOOD NOTES. You can buy the book if you want just in case you need to clarify on certain things.
I loved this class. Some say she grades hard, which is true, to a point, but she gives great detailed critique on your papers so you know how to do better, and I steadily improved throughout the semester. She is also really relaxed, relatable, intereting, and just a nice person. Take if you like writing!
Prof Isaak was super helpful and willing to meet about papers and she gave great advice! She grades all of the papers herself and gives awesome feedback! We also had a ton of fun class activities and she's super chill. Food on peer review days :) Sometimes class time felt pointless but attendance is pretty much mandatory. I would recommend her!
This class is really fun and great. I learned a lot. Professor Isaak knows a lot about the subject and loves to tell interesting stories on the subject. There are a fair amount of papers in this class, just make sure you follow the guidelines. Good class, I recommend taking humanities from her.
I have to admit when I signed up for this class I thought it was going to be another boring GE but I honestly enjoyed this class. Pro. Isaak is a little quirky, but made every lecture interesting. As long as you go to class and take good notes tests are easy to ace. The 2 papers weren't that bad either.
Prof. Isaak (aka Sister Benedicta) is an incredibly passionate, helpful, genuinely awesome mentor and human being. Her writing for film and theatre class was the best Oral/Written Comm class I could have hoped for. Extremely tactful and encouraging of my writing, and responsive to class needs and desires. Flexible, witty, superb professor!
Professor Isaak is very nice and loves what she teaches. However, she mumbles a lot during class and you miss a lot of what she is saying. She is an incredibly picky grader and will mark you off for the smallest things. Tests are extremely long and hard, all in all I'd say take from someone else.
Prof. Isaak is AWESOME. She makes the papers less intimidating by having one-on-one consultations with each person. She brings food on peer-review days. In class we learn different tools to write better papers and she walks us through each paper every step of the way: from idea to end. I would definitely recommend her. She's also helpful and nice.
This class is super easy and a lot of fun! She is a really nice person, but still funny at the same time. We did tons of cool and unique things that made it interesting. Highly recommend her.
I loved Dr. Isaak. She is quirky, funny, and makes lectures extremely interesting. She cares for her class and by the end you'll have a love for art. Study hard for tests. Follow directions for papers. Didn't use the book.
I loved Professor Isaak. She made humanities, a general ed, fun and engaging, even though that is not a subject I would normally be interested in. Class is easy, and the notes give a good outline of how to study. As long as you can do some memorizing and just remember what was discussed, you'll do fine. Some reading is also required.
I am not studying the arts by any means but took this to fulfill a GE requirement. She is the coolest, most reasonable teacher I've ever had. She made every class enjoyable and gave assignments and papers that actually helped me learn and enjoy what I was learning. NO BUSY WORK. Just take notes and take time on hw and you'll be fine.
Best professor ever! I have had her for 4 classes already that is how great she is. She is seriously hilarious abut you will also learn so much. She is also extremely helpful with anything you need.
Professor Isaak made me really like Humanities. I definitely suggest her, and I am going to continue to take her classes to fill my GE's. Her tests and papers are fair, and she is really engaging in lecture. You will never feel overwhelmed in this class.
She takes forever to get your stuff back to you, so sometimes that can be annoying. She's a fun lady and pretty hilarious sometimes, but I fell asleep almost every day during her lectures. You don't really need the book, she goes over everything in her slides. Not a lot of hw, just 3 papers and a few assignments in and out of class. Study for tests
Great professor! Class discussions were very interesting and the workload was not too intense. Just make sure you do all the work and you'll do well in the class. If you want a professor who is fun, then take this class!
This was a great class. Not too much work, and the assignments we did do were interesting and worth my time. Overall a pretty easy class. Do not buy the book, you don't use it at all, it's just for a reference (which you won't need). Her lectures were fun and interesting and the TAs were very helpful when preparing for tests. An enjoyable GE class.
Professor Isaak is hilarious and she's passionate about the subject. It's not a super hard class, just do the assignments and memorize in order to do well on the tests.
I cannot recommend this class. Not overly difficult, and you don't have to do the reading, but here tests are all memorization and regurgitation, and most of her assignments are ridiculous: dream analysis, reading poetry out loud in nature, creating art and writing a big paper about it. Not worth the hassle, unless you really like humanities.
Class overall not hard. It demands a lot but you can get out of it. I sparknotes most of the reading assignments and did fine. The only thing that got me was lecture questions on the exams. Her final is not comprehensive either which is nice. She is also really bad at updating grades. Easy class if you put in time.
I hated and feared history before this class. She is a goofball and made the material interesting. I wish I would have taken her for 201 instead of HIST 201. A good amount of reading and writing, but I expected that from a history class. Definitely take her if you are looking to get your history credits out of the way. She is awesome. SPRING Term.
Absolutely loved this class. Would recommend to anyone. There are quite a few assignments and a bit of reading, but I didn't feel overwhelmed. She's clear and makes the subject matter really interesting. Professor Issak was helpful and funny. I learned a ton in that class, and had a lot of fun doing it!
Definitely my favorite professor at BYU! She's smart, funny and cares about helping her students. USE HER OFFICE HOURS. She's there to help if Humanities doesn't come naturally to you, or you just aren't understanding something. I wish she taught more classes!
She was a really great professor. If you're taking humanities I DEFINITELY would recommend taking from Isaak.
Phenomenal. Not easy, but Dr Isaak is such an engaging and funny instructor that it makes up for the time spent studyingwriting. She knows the material like the back of her hand, yet is entirely humble about it. Two 5-7 page papers to go along with projects, four exams (final is not comprehensive), 1-2 quizzes, and homework papers (2 pages each)
Professor Isaak is probably one of the greatest professors I have ever had. She is an amazing teacher and really wants you to learn and be involved. She definitely makes you work for your grade, but it's worth it. She's hilarious and makes class fun. I learned so much from her!
This was a wonderful class - not an easy A, but very fair and clear on what you need to know. One of the best teachers I've encountered - I learned so much from her and enjoyed her lectures. Attending lectures and taking notes are necessary in doing well on tests. A few big papers and a lot of smaller assignments. Highly interesting subject!!
Prof Isaak is amazing and it's obvious she knows the material really well. I found the course and her lectures interesting. There were 3 fairly long essays throughout the semester but overall if you do your work and attend lecture an A is doable. I would definitely take this class again!!
My favorite teacher EVER. I was worried going into the class because I didn't have a much experience with the world of humanities and I'm not a very good writer. However, Professor Isaak made class so interesting and fun to attend. She was so helpful with my papers. If you go to class and participate, she will do her best to help you. Awesome.
I love Sister Isaak! I had no interest whatsoever in art history and am now contemplating changing my major. She is so passionate and makes the class enjoyable. 2.5 hr lectures (summer class) went by quickly and I always looked forward to class. The papers weren't over the top easy and you need to study, but it's all so interesting!
Professor Isaak is an EXCELLENT teacher. She's a master at presenting material in an educational, interesting, & entertaining way. The textbook is useful but unnecessary, she gives great prompts for the writing assignments, & the tests reflect the material presented in class to a T. If you attend class & take quality notes, you'll do well. 5 stars!
This is by far the best GE class I've taken. Professor Isaak is an excellent teacher. You can tell she has a passion for the subject and teaching. Her lectures were so interesting and entertaining. I never dozed off once. Her class does take work, but she's fair, and she's pretty good at getting feedback to her students promptly. Will take again!
Took Honors Writing from her and loved her. She's fun and energetic and connects well with students. Great freshman-level course. Would be fun to take her again.
Prof. Isaak knows her stuff and is really passionate about it which makes her class fun. I usually just deal with history but I was actually pretty interested all through her class. Its a fair amount of work to be sure but none of it is dumb busy work.
The subject matter of this course was incredibly boring for me. That being said, I looked forward to going to class every day, just because of Professor Isaak. She is hilarious and is so passionate and knows so much about what she teaches. There is hardly any homework, but she tends to have EXTREMELY difficult tests. Stay up on readings!!
Mrs. Isaak is a great teacher. She has a unique personality and defiantly is prepared to teach daily! So be prepared. Her classes are organized and she knows what she hopes each student will learn. She loves life and really has seen a lot of it! It is nice to have a well rounded teacher teaching English. Great GE course!
I love Professor Isaak, but her class was a tough one, unless you are really interested in humanities. She covers lots of material, and basically any tiny thing she mentions in class could end up on the test, and she doesn't post her lectures, so you take a TON of hand-written notes in class (doesn't allow computers) 2 big papers and 2 small ones.
Okay, she is the best lecturer I have ever had at BYU. Or anywhere. Ever. She makes humanities sound interesting (no easy feat) and sets clear and totally attainable expectations for the class. Not hard. Not boring. If you're looking to get a good grade while enjoying a class that isn't your cup of tea, she's the go-to.
Professor Isaak was a great professor! I really enjoyed her lectures, but there were way too many assignments. At times, we were doing two assignments each week, and most of them were a bit pointless. I totally understand having to write a couple papers, but this was too much! Also, SO many hand-written notes.
Prof. Isaak managed to make humanities interesting. She has a funny, dry sense of humor that made going to class quite pleasant. There's a ton of writing and a moderate amount of reading. The tests are not hard if you attend class, pay attention, and take TONS of notes. Attendance is not mandatory, but you'll do awful on the tests if you don't go.
Professor Isaak is an incredibly gifted teacher. Her lectures are best described as professional storytelling time. She makes all the material interesting and enjoyable. Although there was a good amount of outside textbook reading, the tests aren't too bad. In my opinion, however, each paper should NOT be worth more than each midterm!
She's a funny, interactive lecturer. She made me interested in the course even though I'm a business major, and I see aspects of it everywhere. Don't expect responses to emails for at least 2+ weeks. She has a philosophy to never give 100% on any assignment.
I loved taking this class. I'm a scientist, not a humanities student, but I truly enjoyed learning about the history and culture of this class. It was easy, and counts for Civilization credit. Definitely recommend it for Civ.
I'm not a fan of humanities, but Prof. Isaak made the class fun and interesting. There is a lot of material covered in the class, but as long as you go through the study guide and take good notes in class you should do well on the exams. Most of the exam material comes from class and she doesn't post her slides so dont skip class! Would take again!
I LOVED Professor Isaak as my Writing 150 Professor! She was clear, honest, and fun to be around! I'd definitely take another class from her!
For just an introductory writing class, the amount of homework is ridiculous. In such a low level writing course the amount of homework should be nowhere near as much as it is.
Fantastic teacher, difficult class for a General Ed. She is very passionate and knowledgeable, her lectures are entertaining and educational. You get to attend fun music and theatre events. The problem is everything the TA's are involved in i.e. the labs are a waste of time and they grade extra harsh on weekly papers which is infuriating.
She's a great professor, but if you're just looking for an easy GE, don't take her. There's definitely a lot of homework and you'll have to study a lot for the tests. The test material comes almost exclusively from her lectures, so don't skip. The textbook was helpful in understanding the basics, but really wasn't necessary for doing well on tests.
I took this class to fill a GE requirement. Professor Isaak has a deep knowledge of the arts, yet I couldn't seem to understand the content without having to study my guts out. Plan on a paper due every Friday and 3 big response papers. One of the reasons I enjoy this class is because I have a great TA. Buckle up, Its a difficult GE.
Professor Isaak has a deep knowledge of the arts. That being said she drowns out in lecture and is boring. A lot is learned in terms of analysis and critique of art, but a lot of material and art discussed is nonsense and is tailored to her personal taste. Grade in class is purely dictated by how good TA is, so it makes class a hit or miss.
Professor Isaak is pretty awesome. She really cares about what she is teaching, and it rubs off on the students. I have a greater appreciation for the arts. Go to class, study for the tests, and make sure you understand the papers! Talk to your TA and make sure you know what they are looking for. Tests are easy if you study.
Professor Isaak is great! She really cares about her students and makes the lectures fun. If you don't show up for the lectures, you won't pass. The book helps, but the lectures if where it's really at. Show up for class, pay attention, read the book, go to the TA study sessions . . . easy A
Dr. Isaak is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She makes assignments applicable and flexible. For one of my assignments, I chose to write a letter to my department head, and I definitely put more effort into that than anything else before. She is always willing to take the time to listen and chat with you, on papers and on life.
I took WRTG150 from her and then I took her online IHUM101 class. Depending on your work load this class ranges from easy to moderate. I took it as my only class, online while working a 40hr/week job. Exams are straight forward. All multiple choice and straight from the material assigned. Expectations are not unrealistic. Would take again
Professor Isaak is one of the funniest people ever. I was doubtful about taking this class, but it turned out to be really enjoyable! Very rarely were there longer assignments. It was primarily a bunch of short assignments. Exams are really easy, and the papers are simple. If one were to put it in a little work, then they could easily pass.
She's the best! Very understanding and takes the time to make learning doable. You still definitely have to put the work in, but she works with you, not against you. Very funny in lecture. She makes you think about the world differently and ties the material to the gospel. Use her online study guide and TA sessions to study for tests.
Professor Isaak is wonderful! She is very passionate about Humanities, and it is obvious in her lectures and personality. Her tests are fair. She is clear on what you need to know for the test (study guides are detailed well). Her papers aren't difficult if you pay attention and follow the criteria asked to write on. Readings are interesting too.
She's one of the best professors I've ever had, I took two classes from her. Very clear about what she expects of you on the assignments, exams, etc. and will never try to trick you into losing points. Great lectures, she's really passionate about what she teaches. But get ready to study and really take good notes in class.
She is literally the most amazing professor I have had a BYU so far. She makes humanities enjoyable and easy to understand. I loved her class! Just make sure you study the art and fill out the study guide and you will be fine.
I took Professor Isaak again after dropping another class after a schedule conflict a previous semester. Very glad I had another opportunity to take a class from her. She explains everything you need to know in the lectures very clearly. You can tell she enjoys what she teaches and cares for her students. Exams are thorough but fair.
Her class is organized and meaningful. She is a very open person. LGBTQ+ friendly.
Worst professor at BYU, bland and so so boring. She doesn't post assignments until the day before its due so if you like to get ahead you wont. Her lectures are boring and contain zero information on her slides so if you miss class you're screwed for that specific day. Gets off topic a lot and is super nit-picky on papers.
SO. MANY. PAPERS. she will assign four paragraph papers and make it due the next class period. expect at least one page a week, with four page papers every month. lectures were pointless to attend, she would ramble on about pointless things- just read the textbook. ta reviews were useless. tests are memorization and obscure facts about artists.
She is one of the most accommodating and caring professors I've ever had. She has tons of small assignments, but they take less than an hour to complete. Her exams are easy, non-cumulative. She does require you to attend art events and write papers about it, they weren't bad. Class reiterates the reading, but is helpful for the exams.
Professor Isaak is awesome! I'm a molecular biology major, so was not expecting to really enjoy a Humanities class. But she made this class enjoyable and interesting. She's got a funny sense of humor and she is super knowledgeable. She provides a clear study guide for exactly what to know for the tests. Go to class and take good notes!
Professor Isaak is the best teacher I've had at BYU. Her study guides are clear and helpful. She takes time to meet with students and goes above and beyond to help them. She has a great sense of humor and makes learning about Humanities enjoyable. The class does require work and you have to attend class. I plan to take another class from her.
Great class, does involve work. Tests are straightforward, especially if you go to reviews and read the textbook. Make sure you get TA feedback on your arts encounter papers; I got an 84 on my first paper (without showing it to my TA) and then was well into the 90s on the other two that I brought to office hours before turning them in
The online class during the summer is definitely a lot. We have a TON of readings and homework each week but it's expected in a short semester. But honestly it's a good class, she is clear on what you need to know for the test. SO SLOW on getting assignments back though. Like 3 weeks sometimes, and when the class is so short, it's really difficul
Honestly such an easy class. I took it over the summer online and it was a breeze. The study guides are super helpful and the exams are straight to the point. All of the long answers come from the webinars and group discussions and also from the practice quizzes. And it counts for 2 GE's so doesn't get better than that.
I didn't buy the textbook. Quizlet will be your best friend. This class isn't easy by any means, definitely avoid taking it in the Spring or Summer if you have to. She's one of those teachers who legitimately condenses the material of a whole semester into a term. Lots of required seminars and live group discussions if you're not into that.
She is ridiculous with how many assignments you have to do. Drops reading assignments like reading a full 2-hour play and 24 chapter book with just a couple days notice. Spend more time on this class than my 5 other classes combined. She is nice but spends most of the lecture on tangents. The only positive is that the tests are straight forward.
The professor makes the class seem light and easy when in reality she is completely disorganized and makes your life difficult. Doesn't grade assignments until the last week of class so you have no idea how you are doing on anything. Took 2 months to grade our first paper so she could "give feedback", I had 2 comments both said "I agree"
Don't be swayed by her fan club reviews like I was. Doesn't clearly teach big ideas, lectures on her opinion of things that have nothing to do with class, assigns super long readings randomly and with little warning, and doesn't grade big assignments until finals week. Very frustrating experience that hopefully, she changes in the future.
Amazing and caring professor. I went in for every paper for help and she was so kind and helpful. Not hard to get an A if you're willing to work with and revise your drafts a lot. Barely any homework if you're not working on a paper. Papers are reasonable and requirements are clear. She is the best! Take WRTG 150 from her if possible!
Professor Isaak is the best history teacher I have ever had, the class is well organized and she is very clear about what is expected from you on assignments, tests, and papers. Lectures are great and it is clear she knows what she is talking about.
Her class is pretty dense for a GE credit. There's lots of homework and the rests are far more difficult than they need to be. You have to know even minute details, even unimportant ones. I'm not sure why...
She doesn't post her slides. If you don't take notes, you will probably struggle to pass on the test. Not super hard class, just unbearable. The reading assignments, listening assignments, and pretty much every other assignments were like nails on a chalk board.
If you are a person who likes science, math, and the facts of history, don't take this class. Take history 201 or a different professor. This class is very artsy and I hated every second of it.
She is a very nice and approachable professor. Her Intro to Humanities class is fairly straightforward (your grade doesn't ride on one assignment but is distributed evenly among different assignments). I love how she incorporates Latter-day Saint works into the different types of arts discussed in the class. She has you go to different art events.
The only way that you are going to do good in this class is if you already know a lot about Art and Music. She gives out a lot of busy work and her exams are absolutely insane. A lot of what she teaches in the lectures are on her tests but she barely goes over the topics and expects you to know everything about them.
I would not recommend this class unless you really like music and art. She tends to ramble a lot and doesn't really hit key points we need to know for the tests. The tests are pretty hard for a GE class and if you zone out easily, don't take this class.
I literally cannot say enough good things about Prof. Isaak! She did an amazing job of helping me to be excited for the material and to learn it really in depth but also in a way that it didn't feel to overwhelming. She is passionate about what she does, kind, and so present for her students. I was pleasantly surprised by this class thanks to her!
Prof Isaak is a really, really great professor. The online course isn't that great, it's really reading heavy. I wish there were more days that she taught because I really did like her, but online courses are not my favorite. A general knowledge of humanities really helped me through this course, so if you've taken a past course, review your notes.
At first, I loved Professor Isaak's class. She is fun and seems genuine. However, she did not grade anything on time! After finals, I still had 37 ungraded assignments, 4 of which were huge papers that would determine my grade. It was incredible stressful to not get the feedback I needed to know how to improve my papers and not know what grade.
Although kind & well intentioned, she left major papers to be graded until after the final. Most of your grade is 4 papers, but the class never seemed to instruct how to write in a more academic way. She's always willing to give feedback, but without timely grading then what's the point? Frustrating at best; I feel that I didn't learn much from her
She is so funny and nice. Class is actually fascinating and enjoyable. Listen in class and the tests are fine.
Honestly Prof. Isaak is one of the best at BYU. She cares so much about her students and loves what she teaches. She is interesting and fun, and helps you learn without overloading you. Grading is fair. DON'T MISS THE CHANCE TO TAKE A CLASS FROM HER.
Professor Isaak is a super nice lady, but her lectures are all over the place. If you don't know music or art, this class will be very tough for you. On the contrary, if you do know those things, this class is right for you. Either way, she is willing to work with you, but don't expect to have no homework or reading. This class will keep you busy.
This class is a ridiculous amount of work. Not only is there an absurd amount of reading and hw assignments each week, but the tests expect you to remember pretty much everything your read. There are a few essays that are graded as if it is an english course. Nice teacher, interesting class, but I think she asks too much especially for a GE
This woman is so nice, but her class is HELL. Just save yourself the time and don't take it. It's as if she doesn't think you have other classes. The amount of work is obnoxious. Grades writing as if it is a writing class.
Like other people said, there is a a lot of memorization. Flash card are your best friends for this class. I recommend putting art (and painted), terms, and keypoints in your flashcard every time you are studying. Go through it multiple times a day. Thatll prepare you for you exams. For essays, got to the writing center. They were able to help!
This is my second time taking a class from Professor Isaak and I really enjoyed her class. With the online format we didn't really have lectures and really had to teach ourselves but she's always willing to answer questions and clear anything up. Papers were graded hard but it was the TA's. Tests were okay if you read and studied available material
She is so funny and nice. Super understanding and willing to work with students. I never read the textbook and got an A. Just pay attention and take notes in lecture and you'll be set for the tests. Note: you have to memorize the names and tunes of music and art pieces for tests.
I love Professor Isaak. Truly one of the kindest, most caring, and unbelievably smart professors I have ever had. She is so fair in everything she does and if you try your best, you can get an A. She goes completely out of her way to ensure her students feel loved and will do anything to help. Take Writing 150 from her, you won't regret it!
Professor Isaak loves Humanities and makes it exciting. Get ready to memorize art and music. She's not the best at grading papers in a timely fashion so I didn't know my grade in the class until after finals were over.
I loved professor issak's class so much!!! I have never cared about anything having to do with humanities and she gave some of the most engaging lectures. she was always so sweet and kind and in a good mood. attendance isn't mandatory but I did way better on the exams when I went bc she is a very easy to learn from and remember things. 10/10
She teaches in a way that I was able to understand and homework assignments/reading were fairly easy and not time consuming. She knows her stuff very well and is smart. She likes to tie a lot of things in the lectures to her political views and problems she has with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Discussions of such are frequent.
Honestly, I haven't had to work this hard for a GE ever since American Heritage. YEAH. It's as if she doesn't realize that this class is a requirement and the majority of students aren't majoring in humanities? She's super nice and fun but just save yourself from the stress that this class is going to cause you and take it from someone else.
I could not get the grade I wanted no matter what I did. One slip up will cost the class.
Prof Isaak is one of the kindest people ever, but it felt as if the class was designed for Humanities or Art History majors. There is just a lot of homework. Prof Isaak is really willing to work with you, and because there's so much homework, a bad grade on an assignment won't really hurt you.
Professor Isaak is super passionate about Humanities, and she shows it. It's nice, because I'm not exactly into humanities, and yet she made it so entertaining. I felt like I had to study a reasonable amount for midterms. I appreciated that there was four weeks of lecture on how to balance the arts with the sciences, so it wasn't all emotional.
Lots of reading and essay writing and studying ahead but once you put in the work it's smooth sailing. When I'm a CS major a class like this was super nice, even if it was decently hard work, because the professor is really nice and the topics are pretty interesting. Plus it was just time that I was away from coding and I needed that.
Prof. Isaak is a caring person who wants students to learn. Her lectures were often entertaining and enjoyable! I had trouble contacting her outside of class (she never responded to my emails). She tends to go on tangents during lectures discussing stuff not on the test, then you have to learn it on your own. Still an enjoyable class though!
There is no homework at all really tbh. Prof Isaak is very passionate about humanities and sometimes will go on a 20 min tangent of talking about her experiences viewing art in Rome or something, She was great!
Highly recommend Prof. Isaak, she is a safe space and very accommodating. Being in person for lectures matters, but if needs be, she and the TA are willing to work with you. At least 2-3 take-home assignments per subject, but are manageable, 2 arts papers, and 2 exams. Works with students to ensure they succeed and again couldn't recommend her more
The amount of homework is actually insane for this online class. I was forced to spend more time on this class because of readings and homework than even American Heritage. Honestly kind of greedy.
Took this online, class wasn't terrible. Lots of reading from textbooks and other books. 3 papers and 3 tests. Was manageable, did not feel like there was much busy work. Great option if you just need to fulfill a GE credit. The information is actually pretty interesting and the online version of this class is easy to get through quickly.
The amount of homework in this online class was absolutely insane. In 4 years I have never had SO MANY assignments. Also, the quizzes are "open book" but they take forever because the book's search feature is HORRIBLE.
Professor Isaak: super nice. This class: a nightmare. Do not take this class online. The homework load is INSANE & the exams are so specific. The review guides aren't very helpful & Professor Isaak didn't share much when she did her reviews. There is lots of extra credit but the load is so heavy. The quizzes take forever and the readings are HEAVY.
Isaak's lectures can be a bit scattered, but she's genuinely interested in helping students learn. Lots of reading and assignments, so stay on top of it. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for study prep!
I cannot recommend professor isaak enough. She grades accurately, the courseload is tough but managable. Exams are fairly easy if you do your reading -- and the reading doesn't take long at all, but you actually have to do it. You could glide through the class not doing anything, but then you'd fail the exam.
She is a really nice person. The class is a little bit boring, but not too hard. Her tests are super easy and she does a good review before each test. The hardest part of the class is the out of class assignments. She does not really remind you of them and if you miss one you can't get any of the points back. She also has some extra credit.
Get ready to memorize a ton of random crap and I mean a ton. All things that you could find out in a 1-sec Google search, but you now need to commit to memory. 3 papers and 3 exams, which, thank heavens, are not cumulative. At least it counts as a double general. Professor Isaak is nice and always willing to help but man is there a lot to memorize.
Dr. Isaak is great! She's great at making the humanities accessible and it makes it really engaging for everyone, regardless of prior exposure or experience. She is funny and caring and really helpful! I'm excited to take more classes from her.
Professor Isaak is such a fun professor to learn from. Her lectures are engaging and she really makes the art and history come alive. There are great discussions in class when people choose to participate. Sometimes class is a little scattered, but Prof Isaak will adjust the tests to reflect what was covered in class. Go with the flow and enjoy!
Good class. A lot of reading and small assignments but all of it is very achievable and does not take that long. You do have to study and give this class some effort for the exams, but nothing to stress about. Papers felt a little meaningless but I think that is just a personal preference. I loved her communication style and learned and had fun
I'm surprised by some of these ratings because Professor Isaak has been a great professor this semester. This class is great when taken online, tasks are broken down with time estimates and there are dedicated blocks of time for studying and writing. The only thing this class is lacking is thorough feedback on exam responses/essays.
Professor Isaak is very sweet and kind and the class is organized well on Canvas. That being said, the tests are weighted so heavily and the material does not adequately prepare you for the tests. The first midterm, she had to curve the average up to a 75% so it was at a C. It was really hard for a general if you're not passionate about humanities.
Entertaining lectures, and EXTREMELY light reading for a humanities class. The only concern is she is super behind in grading so most of the time you have no idea how you are doing, but she is a merciful grader and has provided 6 optional assignments for up to 30 points in extra credit so there is plenty of cushion.
Professor Isaak is fine. She did good review videos for exams which was nice. I have a bone to pick with this class and the TAs though. Stay away from IHUM 202 online. Take a different general. It is SO test heavy and the TAs grade WAY to harshly (and take forever) and the study guides don't even prepare you well enough for the exams.
I took IHUM 201 with her and loved it! However, IHUM 202 might have been the worst class I have ever taken. Professor Isaak is great, it's her TAs that are the problem. They take two months to grade assignments, don't offer feedback, and won't respond when you ask about it. It got to the point where it started to feel personal. Don't take it!
