Challenging clases and very informative. Seminar style teaching. You will learn everything you need to know in the subject. Cares about the students more than any teacher. Very student oriented.
Great teacher! She gets to know every student, and you'll learn something in her classes whether you want to or not. Lots of reading, but lots of fun.
Dr. MacKay is a terrific asset to the WSU faculty. She makes each and every student feel like an important individual. She happily spends time outside of class to discuss class and other important issues. She is flexible and realistic. Don't be fooled her classes are hard work, but good.
Dr Mac is the best teacher in the world. She is difficult but you will walk away from her class with more knowledge than you thought you ever could hold in your head. She opens up social issues you never even pondered before. I worship her, and she didnt even like me. She is the most amazing college experience ever!
Incredibly passionate...lovely person...truly cares about issues and students
*Once again, just gonna quote 'cause it's true* Dr. MacKay is a terrific asset to the WSU faculty. She makes each and every student feel like an important individual. She happily spends time outside of class to discuss class and other important issues. She is flexible and realistic. Don't be fooled her classes are hard work, but good.
I thought she was kind of weird, and way to much reading of really boring stuff. Her class almost made me want to change my major. She's a nice person but her teaching style isn't my favorite.

She really freaks me out sometimes!! She switches back and forth from the third and first person... making it difficult to follow the conversation! I will say that she tries very hard to teach the subject matter, and wants all the students in the class to broaden their minds! She just isn't my style of teacher that's all!!!
Dr. Mackay is one of my all time favorite professors. She is so passionate about her subject and she gets to know every single student individually. She will do anything to help you out. There is quite a bit of hard reading, but if you can get through it you'll be fine on her tests.
I think she spent most of her time preparing for her history classes. Most of the assignments she gave were spur-of-the-moment and not explained well. I spent a lot of time BSing stuff because I didn't know what she was asking for. She also is not particularly fond of alternate viewpoints, so existentialists beware.
I took this Class Online. I loved the Books She Used. The text Books were Good and The Novels were Great!. I would definatley take a class from her again.
I took the online version of this class and it sucked. I made one comment about the Declaration of Independence and she freaked out and bombarded me with e-mail. If you say what everyone else is saying then she won't mind, but stray a little and she hates it. You also have to respond to other people's posts with a certain amount of words. Don't tak
she's a nice person but not that great of a teacher. she is really forgiving about deadlines. the class i have from her only has seven studens, so she cancels class almost once a week.
For those who aren't History majors this class and the professor totally suck. She has an extreme liberal bias which she enforces daily. She thinks the Constitution changes as our dictionaries and President's change. It's absurd.
Kathryn is one of the best professors I've ever had. Her classes (I took 3) are fascinating, thought provoking and just plain good. Take anything you can from her, but especially Women's Studies, Feminist Theory.
One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. If you attend the study sessions early on Saturdays plan to get an A in the class. You will learn interesting things you've never heard in previous classes.
Be prepared for the feminist spin on history
Not a very nice person I will not take a class from her again. did not care about what I was doing and thought I was wasting her time.
Really nice and helpful teacher. All her tests are essay exams and she encourges critical thinking. Has SI and her own study sessions for every test. A lot of reading involved. Learned new and interesting things, but my previous notions to the test.
I took her online class and it was one of the hardest that I've taken. I don't think she believes in giving full points for assignments, I was always docked 1 or 2 points. She was quick at replying to emails. There was a ton of reading each week that had to be done by Wednesday to be able to reply to the discussion threads. Good class, lots of work
Do not take her online class! Her tests are extremely hard. She gives you a list of things to study for but half of them were never covered in class! Never gives full points for anything.
I took this class online and the homework for it was really hard, a lot of work and thinking. Her tests were good, all essay but she gave a very good study guide, which gave the topic of all essays and topics were applicable. She is also very willing to work with you if her have any problems. Grades homework hard but tests are a little easier.
Great teacher! Can be a little disorganized at times, but she's extremely helpful and easy to work with.
MacKay is an excellent teacher to take a class from. There is a lot of reading involved but as long as you keep up with that and attend her lectures you should be fine. All tests are the study guide which is handed out a week before the test and is all essay. Also, free hot chocolate at her sat. morn study sessions. Gives you a reason to get up!
Overall, MacKay is nice but she requires a lot of reading, several oral presentations and several papers. IMO it's too much to handle when you have additional classes. She is a tough grader as well and expects undergraduate students to be at graduate thinking level. Her teaching style and lectures are somewhat hard to follow.
She's an okay professor. Her teaching style is a little disorganized for me.
Dr. MacKay is wonderful. She is somewhat overbearing at first but she has a passion for teaching. Her exams are essays but she gives you a week in advance to prepare for them. Plus, right before the exam she holds a helpful study session. Lot's of reading but the class discussion brings it all home. I was not a fan of history until this class.
I'm not gonna lie, I hated this class with a passion. I had no idea what she expected us to do, she was all over the place and incredibly unorganized. She pretty much made me change majors! She's a nice lady, but she's just not a good professor! Don't take it, unless you have time for pointless discussions and extra assignments.
BEST HISTORY TEACHER i have ever had! she actually teaches in a way to make the class think and reconsider things. the tests are super easy!! WHY?! because she gives you the test questions a week before hand.SO when entering the test you already know what questions there are! best way to do tests, they are essay type but she looks for what you know
i was confused a lot. My class was a hybrid so it was only 7 weeks but man it was a lot of work. not only did you have to do assignments from the class but then you had to do a test every week along with another assignment. I'm glad it was a short class or else i would have gone crazy
If your thinking of taking history 1700 as a general, DO NOT WITH THIS PROFESSOR! the exams are hard as heck! she grades as if you know what she thinks is right! i was so bored by her discussions, i think i may have feel asleep twice. whatever you do take schmidt NOT mckay!! do yourself a favor!!
Amazing teacher! If you put the work into it and your a good writer you should be fine. If you want an A you have to read the text assigned and there is a lot of reading, but most of the reading is interesting. She is really passionate on what she teaches.
not organized drove me crazy.
Alright professor. Her style of organization definitely takes a while to get used to though.
A wonderful class if you came to learn. It is not easy but you will come out of the class with a wonderful knowledge of early American History. Be prepared to do a lot of work. If you do the work and listen to the professor's instructions you will get an A in the class.
Online class was great. Teacher was worthless. Twice, she said I did not take a test, I received 0's for these two tests. Although ChiTester says I had taken the tests and even said how long I had been in the lab taking it. Asked her to look into for me. She said she would not, at all! I got a B+ so, whatever. Worthless teacher!
Completely unorganized and unclear about expectations. She used this online syllabus that constantly was being changed and updated, causing major anxiety for everyone in the class. I would have dropped it if it wasn't required for my minor. I do NOT recommend taking a class from her. Too bad she's probably tenured.
Great teacher! She is intimidating at first, but then you get used to her. She is very passionate when she lectures and very informative. Just make sure to come to class prepared because she might call on you. I learned so much! Tests are essay form and easy as long as you read. I would definitely recommend her!!
This class is not worth your time. You are required to attend 3-4 outside of class government meetings. With every one I had a work conflict. You cannot pass her tests without going to a study session, which she holds on Saturdays and Sundays not at Weberstate. Her tests are obscure and specific and not worth taking. Avoid her at all costs
She has a lot of outside of class assignments. I had to miss work every time. If you work or have kids this is not the professor for you. She is very disorganized and will not budge on anything.
This class is not an easy A at all. You will have to work hard for your grade. All of the test are essays. She puts the prompts online but you don't know which one you will get. She really makes you think. This class was interesting but boring at the same time.
Good teacher
She was completely disorganized and very hard to work with. She would change the syllabus without much notification and not understand why people were so confused/behind. I would never take a class from her again.
This online class is annoying. She doesn't tell you what you need to improve on to help your grade.
This teacher is really nice. You can tell that she loves her job. She makes history seem interesting and connects it with the present. She brought treats a lot and always had study sessions right before an exam.
Professor Mackay is the best I have come across at WSU. I took the online class and struggled through it because of some personal issues, but the way the class is set up makes history finally make sense. Professor Mackay is very kind and goes out of her way to help students understand the material before tests. Highly recommend!
I LOVED this class! She is so enthusiastic about history. The tests are essays, but don't worry because if you attend the study sessions she will tell you EXACTLY what she wants in each paragraph of the essay. She is there to help you succeed. Never had an interest in history until this class. Always ask questions. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
She does a lot of work for her students. She even has study sessions at Grounds for Coffee and buys you either a coffee or smoothie when you show up.
Before each test she holds review sessions early Saturday morning, these sessions are not mandatory but it would be difficult to pass the test without going. She also requires various activities outside of class. This outside work is overwhelming and did not help me learn more effectively
The class is unstructured and the syllabus is hard to understand. She does not teach research, even though it is a research methods class. Class was often cut short because she would schedule meetings when she was suppose to be teaching. We worked on group presentations instead of discussing anything about our projects.I'm disappointed
This teacher was aweful!! she never made her expectations clear. It took me all semester to figure out what she wanted. I like history but this techer made me want to scream. I don't think there could be a worse proffessoe. Do not take a class from her!!!
Disorganized and unclear expectations. It took me a while to figure out what she wanted from me, and she gave very little feedback. This class was a lot of work, but I learned a lot from it.
Professor MacKay is a great teacher. Her lectures were interesting and clear and she was always careful to check the consensus in the class to be sure everyone knew what was going on. She helps with papers or anything else you have questions with too. If you're willing to try she'll help. Definitely worth a try.
The class was organized well enough, but I thought it was extremely difficult to receive full credit. I wasn't sure what she wanted from the discussion or other written work. She made it too difficult for an under graduate course.
Professor MacKay is certainly not an "online" teacher. In her lectures on campus, she may be a wonderful instructor, but online I recieved little to no feedback from her, the assignments were not engaging, and I felt like I was a burden to her schedule. Definitely NOT interactive. Would not take again.
Get ready to read!! Multiple articles are assigned for each class. If you don't go to lectures don't expect to get a good grade on the tests. She wants you to repeat what she thinks instead of what you think. Her tests are all essays, 5 of them, but she drops the lowest one. I never used the textbook.
Her tests are the hardest part of the class. If you don't go to the study sessions the tests are very hard. Make sure to take lots of notes and read because you'll need it for the tests. Definetely have to work hard for a good grade.
Dr. MacKay really cares about her students. She bought us food, took time out of the weekend to take us on interesting tours in Ogden and SLC. She cares about students as if they were her children. That said, organization is weak in the class. Passing is pretty simple, but she grades in a way to make earning an A near impossible. Worth taking? Yes.
Good class - you have to work for it! There are 2-3 writing assignments every week. Make sure you know the format and use citations, some of the web resources for citing are not correct so make sure you get clarification. Exams are 5 essays. She tells you the 10 possible topics, then you randomly get 5 of them. She is very helpful if you ask!
Dr. MacKay was incredibly helpful with this class. She utilized her resources and took us on many class trips around Ogden and Salt Lake. She is a hard grader, but if you do the work and everything she asks, you should be fine. Don't skip her class, or you will get lost. I enjoyed the class and Dr. MacKay.
This class is fairly easy-going, but by no means an easy A. Tough grading with little feedback makes me questioning what she is asking of me. Is she asking me to cite information or explain what I learned? If you keep up with the reading, listen in class, study for tests, you'll pass, but you won't have the best of grades.
Dr. MacKay is phenomenal. She expects a lot from her students, but if you are willing to put in the work, & reach out when you need guidance, I can not imagine a better prof. She holds study sessions before every exam, if you show up you WILL do well. She likes to challenge her students to think outside preconceived notions & to do their best work
I think I have done more writing for this course than any other course I have taken at Weber, and I am far and away better for it. In the syllabus Dr MacKay stated that it would be a writing heavy course and she definitely was not understating that. While challenging to get all the course work done I am far more knowledgeable than before
Kathryn MacKay makes you work. I learned a ton in her class, but she grades really hard so wondered if she thought I had learned anything. There are massive amounts of reading and writing but you come away from her class with much more knowledge than going in. I'd take another class from her even knowing how hard you work.
She was very willing to help the students, and work with you if you occasionally slipped. However, for each assignment there was usually an extensive amount of reading that went along with it. This usually made assignments more time consuming, so be prepared for that.
Definitely one of my favorite professors, she really focuses on making you a better writer. Take advantage of her redo policy and even though attendance isn't necessarily mandatory, it's good to show up.
I learned so much from MacKay. There is a lot of reading and her grading is tough. She expects a lot from her students, but is kind and very willing to help. You are allowed to re-write any paper you submit to her, but often you will feel you need to re-write. I'd take additional classes from her but know what to expect.
Mackay was one of my favorite teachers. She holds study sessions on Saturdays and tells you exactly what's going to be on the essay exam. Just briefly read over the assigned chapters, show up, participate, and go to the study sessions. If she sees you're trying, she will help you out as much as she can.
I took WGS 3050 from Dr. MacKay. It was my first upper division class, and was definitely a challenge and required a lot of reading. Nonetheless, Dr. MacKay was willing to meet with me multiple times to help me understand the reading as I have dyslexia and help me write papers. An incredible professor and a truly eye opening class. Would recommend
She wants you to learn history through her eyes. If you think differently, she docks points. It leaves me questioning how useful the information I learned was. Articles you use to do discussions are very liberal biased. Tons of reading and writing. Most discussions took me an average of 3 hours. Not a give me A and doesn't allow individual thinking
Im an Avg student. Never read one book. Got a B- in class. More writing than in my english class. Tough grader. She is nice. 3 exams, study all topics, she will pick 5 topics that you have to write two paragraphs about. Get ready to write and "read". You can find all info on the internet. Wouldn't recommend this class. Too much writing.
McKay is a good teacher - she knows her American history very well. You are assigned readings from the text for every week . Doing them will only benefit your own knowledge, and they are not mandatory. 2 books to read and discussions on them, as well as New York Times Quizzes. Show up, participate, and read. Tests are all essays. Makes you work!
I've had three classes with MacKay. I would not recommend taking a class from her. The biggest issue I have is that she seems to randomly take points off of things while providing little to no feedback. It is still easy to get a B in the class, but I would not take another class from her if I didn't have to.
This is an online class so it's hard to know what she's like in person but she is very tough at grading, super picky about everything and her instructions can be very confusing. She only ever points out things you do wrong and it's highly discouraging, I won't be taking a class from her again
Promotes her own politics more than teaches correct history. Definitely a marxist sympathizer. Having already researched quite a bit of history on my own, I was surprised at what theories she is still perpetuating. Argued with her daily. Showed up to class, did my work correctly and thoroughly. Got and A.
Dr. MacKay was a great professor. She is a great person and is extremely nice. However, she is an extremely tough grader. But if you do the readings and study well, it shouldn't be hard to pass. I would probably recommend this class, definitely the teacher. Not a teacher that everyone will like, but I really appreciated her and her work.
Took History 2710 with her online. This class had more reading and writing than my English class. Not only are there discussion posts which require tons of reading and writing, but there is a writing "project" due every week on top of it. The tests are all essay format. You have to study every section in detail in order to pass.
So much reading and busy work. The class itself is not that hard, I really didn't put that much effort into the class and stayed well above average. There is just a ridiculous amount of reading involved for a little bit of work. You have a discussion and a project to report on every week. Tests involve 15 topics and she picks 5 for you to write on.
This class was a 1 credit class required for History majors, but I had more to do in it than in some of my 3 credit classes. None of it was terribly difficult, but it was a much heavier workload than I expected for a 1 credit class. Had I known, I probably would've planned my schedule differently. She also tends to lose assignments, just fyi.
This class was ridiculous. She obviously takes everything in life way too seriously including this entry level history class she treats like an advanced class. If you feel like having 2-3 major assignments every week. Heavy reading and writing. Extremely critical feedback with hardly any direction this is your class.
Dr. MacKay is very strict and is always pushing you on the little things, so if you want an easy A dont bother. But if you want to be a better writer and historian, she is one of the best mentors you could have here. Also when you finally do earn an A in her class, it will feel like making the winning shot in the NBA finals.
History 2710 with Professor Mckay was one of my favorite classes this year! She provides ample opportunities outside of class for study sessions with her and other students to make sure you are 100% ready for her tests. She is very passionate about her subjects and even more passionate to get people outside of the class on field trips that tie in!
Requires excessive reading and writing. Grading is inconstant and feedback is limited. All sources and assignments have cultural marxist assumptions. If you see the world as whitesevil, non-whitesperfect than this class is for you. This whole class is an exercise in ethnomasochism.
This was the third class I have taken from her, and they have all been great. Not sure why there is so much negative stuff about her, and I don't agree. If you are mature enough to do the readings/homework, you will be fine. She is a tough grader, but she is fair, and tells you what she expects. She will not babysit though. Very caring and helpful.
Overall this was a very good class and if you are going to take Econ I would recommend taking it from her. There is a lot of notes to be taken and she is a lecture type teacher but when it comes to the quizzes all the notes she has you take really comes in handy. she also holds awesome study sessions before each exam and goes over every topic!!
I loved Dr. Mackay. I had a hard time grasping some of the course material and she was always willing to meet with me. She likes you to write a certain way, and you'll go through a couple of drafts, but will be a better writer for it. Incredibly caring. One of the best classes I have taken at WSU by one of the best humans employed there.
Fascinating yet challenging class. A ton of material--three texts plus a book report. Tests are essay and are rigorously graded, as are the response papers. Five solid oral presentations nudged me into A- territory. Strongly recommend attending offsite study groups and field trips. Learned a lot, the only metric that really matters I suppose.
You can pass this class. I am 16 years oold and I passed this class. Just show up prepared . very interesting and good discussions
I was 16 years old when I took this class, I took both 2700 and 2710, and got an A in both classes. If you don't study for the tests you will fail. But she gives all the study guides prior to the tests and holds group discussions. The tests are in essay form but she does offer extra credit with every test
Pretty easy A. You do not really have to read all of the assigned reading, but read a bit for class comments. Tests are in essay form. She holds study sessions at Grounds for Coffee and she tells you exactly what to write on the test. She also buys you drinks! There are quizzes about every week from the new york times, but they are easy.
There's lots of reading and there's a short essay due every week. We had to buy two novels that we barely went through. Outside of that, the class was easy. I enjoyed MacKay. She was nice and very responsive.
I would never take a class from her again. Instructions were often unclear on assignments. The class has only two tests. Both times I went to take the tests within the window given, the test wasn't open, which is frustrating. Anytime I sent her an email I had to wait three or four days. It was an easy A, but I don't feel like I learned much.
She's very sweet and easy to talk to. she often is a little scatter brained as far as grading and returning papers but the good part is that if you go talk to her, she'll often give you really good feedback.
Dr. MacKay was an absolute pleasure. She had conversations with the class more than gave lectures. Her class was enjoyable, and only challenging in the sense that it asked you to reconsider your perspectives. She may be one of my favorite professors of all time.
Not hard and is willing to work with students. There's just soo much reading. Take your english classes first! She expects a lot of words for the discussions and on the tests which are also in written form. She is an easy grader tho! and drops off 2 lowest assigments. I was deployed when I took this class working 12s - 6 days a week and got an A.
Great professor does have a lot of homework at times but does except late work. Tries to keep lectures entertaining and is understanding of students.
Completely unimpressed by Professor MacKay. Not too much work. Two assignments a week, a test every few weeks. The tests are a little unreasonable - essay exams with no notes. You're required to buy two novels that you only use for one discussion. Complete waste of money, just google the events! The textbook wasn't that important either.
Boring lectures, short essays every week, does not give good feedback, essay tests graded harshly--study! Also makes you buy 2 books for 2 short papers. Don't buy the books; read about them online.
Mackay is very accessible outside of class and responds quickly to emails. Expectations for the class very unclear and the grading is harsh. Feedback is not useful and usually only 1-3 words. Texbook used, but had to get 2 other books I only used once. Did not email updates about changes to test locations.
Despite telling myself I'd never take another class from her, I ended up having to take multiple classes from her. Lectures are interesting, but there's no clear grading criteria. She wants specific answers and specific things addressed on homework, but doesn't tell you what they are.
meh. I'm sure down deep she's a nice person. That's what truly matters. BUTTTT..... don't take a class from her-you'll hate it. Don't schedule appointments with her--She'll forget. Don't leave your waterbottle in her office--You'll find it 3 months later and she'll think it's hers and then you have to show her where your name is on it. nah fam.
I took two classes from Professor McKay in '02 and '03. I recently thought about the impact she had on me as an undergrad and found her RMP. I had a great experience with her as my professor; she was inspirational and made me think. Her critiques were fair and designed to challenge us as scholars. I personally found her unique and approachable.
One of the worst teachers in the history department. If "say more" was a person. Only take her if she is the only available option. no matter the body of work you turn in she will comment say more.
Dr. MacKay's course was balanced well with many different types of assignments and ways to do research outside of class. She also took the class on several great field trips.
She was not clear as to what she wanted for the assignments. No matter how much I write she always says "say more" and docks me points.
Her online interactions are not the best. Some of her feedback is copy and pasted and comes off as a little angry. She's not the best with emails, and is dismissive of personal and religious values occasions where extensions, or due dates are concerned. Probably not mean in real life, but I would avoid an online course with her.
The professor's lectures can be dry, but she provides helpful study sessions and guidance on essay tests. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for preparing. Overall, an easy A if you stay on top of the weekly assignments.
