Dr. Pinkney is a great history professor she can be a tad boring at times but her lectures always tell you exactly what you need to know. The test are not that difficult. She doesnt drop grades or do a curve if you dont go to class and get your notes your kind of screwed.
Very good teacher. Her class is hard but doable. Tests are tedious but she tells you exactly how they are going to be. Take lots of notes and never skip class! Would definitely take her again. Very knowledgeable lady.

She's a great teacher. She lectures forever but it's VERY IMPORTANT that you go to class to take notes. A lot of info that she gives but hey it's easy to pass if you have a good memory and study.
ALL YOU DO IS TAKE NOTES BY PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU SAY DIDNT LIKE THE TEST FORMAT DAT INCLUDED A 40 PT ESSAY
just go to class and take good notes...... u can make a good grade....u dont even have to read the textbook.....
i have to repeat the damn class cuz she was so friggin ****...i got a D in her class and i made 4 page review sheets for all her tests...and she fails me on the final.. horrible horrible professor.
Didn't do well on my first test (F), but after I understood her format I got an A. She is a great lecturer, and follows her written outline to a T. Show up everyday, take great notes, and you will do fine.
If you go to class, and take lecture notes, making a good grade in her class is not hard as long as you are willing to put in the study time. She gives you a list of terms for the test AND what the essay questions are over. She made a portion of history i hate, extremely interesting to me and i thoroughly enjoyed her class, one of my favorites.
way too hard...i went to her office and she sed that she wud give thorough reviews for her next tests but never did...not worth taking
This professor repeats her previous lectures at the beginning of every class, wasting about 20 minutes of your class time. Her and her TAs also watch your personal laptop screens and if you're doing anything other than taking notes (even though alot of the time it's repeated things) they threaten to kick you out of the classroom.
As long as you SHOW up to class, take notes and pay attention, its very easy to make at least an A on the test, make sure that you study more then just the essay questions she gives you and the short answer terms, study the different amendments, acts, important people and it is quite honestly an "easy A" just do work.
too boring.... "snore"
Hard teacher; doesn't grade fairly. Her exams are horrible, I wrote a six paage essay following her outline and got a C. She repeats a lot of things over and over and her grader takes off points for small stuff.
She makes a boring topic even more boring. Her tests aren't very easy, even if u write 6 pages she wont give u all the points. ALL the multiple choice is out of the book so read and take notes! I wouldn't recommend her, even though i ended up with a decent grade I had to study SO much!
Stay away from this teacher if possible. You cannot miss a day of class or forget passing the exams. Nothing she teaches matches the textbook. Very tricky problems on each of the 2 day long 4 exams and almost impossible to write a perfect essay for each of the exams. Spent more time studying for this class than my upper level engineering classes.
I looked forward to this class, but she didn't make history any more interesting for me. She gives you three possible essay topics and she's want all the points she talked about in class. I literally memorized three essays per test. Her tests also include a a multiple choice (from the reading), and a fill in the blank. I would not take her again.
If you pay attention in the class, take decent notes, and study prior to the test you will do well. If you want an easy A, don't take her course. If you don't mind doing a little work, her class is passible. To me, she is straight forward and consistent. Not a lot of rambling.
YOU MUST GO TO CLASS TO PASS. Both the prof and teach assistant are helpful. Once you learn to write the test essay's her way, you can get an A. Hardest A I ever earned was in her class. But I started off with a 76 on my first test and still got an A in her class.
People either like her or don't like her. I don't. She's straight forward with her lectures, but her tests are crazy. In 50 minutes she wanted a perfect 6 page essay, 4 short essays, 10 multiple choice and 10 fill in the blank. She eventually made it a two day test, but I wouldn't take this class if I had a busy schedule.
Her lecture goes along with the book fairly well, and reading helps reinforce what she teaches. I made a 95 on the first test and all I did what study exactly what she told us to. I made note cards for all the important topics she told us about and reread the assigned reading, it's not that bad.
Dr. Pinkney is a very knowledgeable and interesting lecturer. She provides an outline at the beginning of each class and follows it. Tests are difficult but if you come to class and take good notes, getting an A is not difficult. For her essays, prepare based on her outline and include DETAILS!
You either learn what she teaches and get an A or dont learn and fail. She gives everything you need to know to get an A. Her test consist of 1 essay from her lectures, 5 short answers (3 sentences per answer) 10 Multiple Choice and 10 Fill-in-the-blank. If you study and practice writing the test prior to the test you'll get an A+!
I hated history before her class and have always been bad at it. I can't say my grades are as high as i wish they would be but I really enjoyed her class and lectures. She made it almost sound like a story. She prepares you well with the tests. Really loved her class. Would def. take her again. Very clear, very strait forward.
Dr. Pinkney was very helpful and nice. If you are willing to put in a lot of time and effort achieving an A is possible. Attendance is crucial in order to do well on tests, since tests consists of material from lectures and the textbook.
Her first test was fairly easy, but as the semester went on her tests became a bit ridiculous. You have to write a long essay, but she pretty much doesn't care how you write it...you just have to list every single fact ever known to mankind on the topic at hand. Her lectures rambled on and she back-tracked a lot or would jump around in time.
Mrs. Pickney is the HARDEST history out of everyone at UTA. She expects you to do like 15 multiple choice, 5 short answers, 10 fill in the blank and then at least a two page essay. He r lectures are very, very, dry. SHe lectures from the time class starts all the way to the end. You MUST attend class to at least make a C. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
I could not get into this class. by far the hardest i've taken to date. I decided to Drop it in the end.Maybe great if you're a history major but that's about it. Good luck because you'll need it!
by far the HARDEST history class i have ever taken, even after taking US history all my life since elementary. you have 1 hour, 20 mins to do a 10 mult choice, 5 short essay, 10 fill in the blank, and 1 2.5 page eaasy! and she wants every detail that escapes her mouth! WOULD NOT SUGGEST!!! waste of my GPA!!
I don't know why people keep saying her classes are so hard...the tests really are not all that challenging, there is more than enough time to complete the components. Yes, she does lecture for well over an hour every class, but the lectures are informative and easy to comprehend. I will be taking the other half of U.S. History with her for sure.
This is NOT the history class you should take if you want someone who has any sort of passion for the subject they teach. The whole class is her reading off her pre-written outlines and you trying to catch everything she says. The tests are quite long, this is NOT the class to take if you are a Junior/senior...to much work for a freshman class
OH MY GOSH! THIS CLASS MAKES ME WANT TO RIP MY HAIR OUT. Every time I walk into the class room I just think to myself "I wonder if I'm going to type 10 or 15 pages worth of notes today." It's not a hard class, she gives too much information, it's almost impossible to cram it all into an hour and half test. She's nice, just hard to pass.
The tests are extremely difficult. Your grade depends on your ability to write an essay.
Tests - Difficult, Mostly Essay Form. Lecture - Boring But Good Facts Here And There That Can Interest You. Attendance - Not Required Mostly But Missing One Is Very Harmful. Helpfulness - Full Of Facts To Answer Your Questions and Follows Up If She Doesn't Have An Answer. Recommended To ONLY Those Who Can Dedicate To Attending And Studying
you have to go to class. and you will takes PAGES of notes. you have to know the material to do well on the tests seeing how it's mostly essay. not a huge fan of hers and if you didn't have to take her i would recommend trying to find another prof. took it during the summer which made it really boring. BE SURE TO STUDY.
SHE IS THE BEST HISTORY PROFESSOR SO FAR, SHE KNOWS HER SUBJECT WELL. ATTEND HER CLASSES AND TAKE NOTES, IT'S EASY TO GET A IF YOU TAKE NOTE AND STUDY.
Dr. Pinkney has been around the block a few times and doesn't take any crap. Either you know the material or you don't. It's not brain surgery. She isn't going to spoon feed you multiple choice questions. She is going to make you learn history, which is important for everyone. There is a Supplementary Instruction class that everyone should take.
"You don't know what you got till its gone." I would do anything to go back to a professor like this for history. She gives a list of key terms of what will be on the test, and tells you the EXACT two essay questions that will be on the test. Great professor! EASY!
Nice, knows her stuff. I LOVED LOVED LOVED her class. I hated history before her. Total lecture, live and die by your notes, attendance not mandatory but i recommend showing up. Would re-take her in a heart beat..i learned SO much!
She is a great prof! She really knows what she is talking about and I would recommend going to class because her lecture is what the test will be over. Take GOOD notes. Study days before the exam. She is an easy teacher overall her test weren't hard! She tells you possible essay topics and you can rule out which one will be on the exam! :)
Her class is not hard at all. She tells you everything you need to know for test. Attendance is mandatory since you will have to use the notes to formulate the essay on the test. Take good notes and be sure to read the book too. Just study a day or two in advance and you will ace the test.
Dr. Pinkney takes her job seriously and expects students to do the same. Almost 2 months without class to work on research paper. 2 tests worth 100 each and a paper worth 500 are the major grades. Not a class to take lightly. If one is interested in learning historical research and composition this is a great class to attend.
GREAT professor. I took her for 1311 and got B..and DEF worked for it. She is such a good professor that I took her for 1312 too, knowing that I would prob not get an A again. you MUST go to class to succeed because SO much is based on the lectures. The tests are tough but you can do well if you put in the time and actually study!
She really made history seem interesting
She's a great professor! As long as you go to class, you should be fine! Tests are comprised of short answer, fill-in-the blank, essay, and multiple choice. She tells you the two possible essay topics, gives you the short answers in advance, and if you take good notes you should ace the fill in the blank/multiple choice. I love her!
I loved her class! She is definetly a high quality teacher and takes her job seriously. She makes history interesting, and if you take good notes and attend class, you'll do fine! I'm taking her next semester because I enjoyed her class that much.
Reading isn't necessary! As long as you attend class everyday and take good notes, you'll do GREAT on her exams! After this class, I can come out telling you everything about American History part I! Her class consist of 4 exams, 1 quiz-life of Federick Douglas. EASY if you read the book. Her class provides SI's which you can goto, Very helpful!!
Dr. Pinkney seems like she's going to be terrible at first, but she really does try to be lively. You write a paper, and you don't see her for a month, no class...when you get back, you find out who she is...she does a good job prepping you to write the paper, and she's pretty funny. Not a blow off teacher or class. Do the research and participate.
She knows the information she is teaching. She offers every bit of information pertaining to the subject, though, and she expects her students to absorb every single bit, too, which is extremely difficult. She isn't a fair grader. Her tests are extrememly lengthy. If you want to learn about history and you have tons of free-time to study then do it
She knows what she is talking about and gives every detail you could possibly need. Her tests are very lengthy and you HAVE to know what you are going to write about beforehand on the essays- you have no time to brainstorm! She is helpful and if you attend all the classes then she will cut you a little slack at the end of the semester. MUST STUDY
The only words to describe her class are: EASY PEASY LEMON SQUEEZY. Seriously, go to all the lectures and write out all your short answers and essays out in advance. If you take good notes, you'll do fine.
Dr. Pinkney has 4 exams & a quiz over a short bk. Her exams consist of: an essay, MC, short answer, & fill in the blank. Super easy class but u MUST attend almost every lecture because the notes u write in lecture is basically the material on the exam. Prepare WELL for the the essays & study the key terms she gives you and you'll pass.
TAKE PLENTY OF NOTES!! She's very detailed but the exams are tedious!
Pretty good professor. The whole class was taking long and thorough notes and then regurgitating them on the exams. She will tell you exactly what kind of detail she wants on the final, and will give hints to which questions will be asked. Rewards people who attend after exams with bonus points.
She is a VERY easy teacher. Attend all of her classes and you'll do fine. No textbook actually necessary. If you take good notes you'll pass all of her tests.
Definately take detailed notes, maybe even record the lectures. Her lectures are like a story. Attend lectures and take plenty of notes and you'll be fine. Overall, great professor.
I hated her condescending tone. I never wanted to go to class, I failed the first 2 tests and I am a History Major. Avoid her, but if you must, submit to her ways or drop the class.
Great Professor! Really knows her stuff. Take detailed notes, go to class, and you will do fine! Took her for Hist 1311 and will take her again for 1312.
Professor Pinkney is a great! I learned a lot in her class. Her class challenges me. You will have to study, however an A is very possible! I received an A for 1311 and a B for 1312. All test questions are from her lectures (I suggest typing- it's so much faster) and book. I would take her class again and again! She's one of my favorite professors.
She talks slow and clearly. If you go to class and take notes you will make a B. She gives reviews but sometimes she throws things on the test that were not on the review. Overall she is easy compared to other history teachers.
She makes this class pretty hard. 4 tests all the same format with multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, and an essay. Goes through a lot of info very fast. Takes roll randomly once or twice. She is nice and will help you but if you want an A i would look for someone else.
Good story teller, and easy to follow. IF you are great at memorizing, then, making a "B" will be attainable. Otherwise, don't take her. She lectures by her notes, NOT by the book, but get it b/c it will help you follow her lectures if you're lost. 4 tests straight from her lectures, so study!!!
NOT A CLASS FOR PEOPLE WHO LEARN VISUALLY! Tedious, dull lectures. Lots of note taking and studying required. Tests are extremely hard (it's like taking a final every single time!). If you're a history buff then this is the class for you, if you're just passing through and want an A, look elsewhere.
Overall an excellent professor! Very through, takes the time to explain what you do not understand. Tells you exactly what you need to know for the exams. The exams are fairly lengthy, if you have attended class and completed the reading, they are no problem. My only grip is that you get 2 possible essay topics for each exam. Highly Recommended!
My advice:write down the outline she puts on the board at the beginning. Take thorough notes from her lecture. While studying for the essays, I used the outline she wrote out and then made sure I knew each point well enough. I made notecards for the short answer saying:1.What is it?2.What is its significance? I liked the way she lectured.
Great teacher overall. Covers all content in lecture so if you don't like attending class she isn't fr you. If you show up and don't sleep you will make an A.
Dr. Pinkney knows what she is teaching and it shows through in her lectures. Extensive note-taking, lectures through entire period, but provides everything necessary to do well on the exam. Provides great outline for every lecture and 3 possible essay prompts for each exam (chooses 1 and reveals it on exam day). Book isn't necessary.
Very helpful and to the point. You do have to attend class for most of the semester becasue you work on your 10-15 page research paper
You will not need the text book and you will not need to "take good notes" you will need to copy verbatim EVERYTHING this woman says because she is a walking text book. Everything she writes, you must also write and she was very boring! At 8 in the morning I'm thinking of my bed and she always made me want to go back to it!
Old school lecture teacher, she grades pretty hard but i did alright in the class
Go to class and take very good notes. Everything this lady says is important. She gives you essay topics ahead of time as well as short answer terms to look over before each exam. Pretty easy class if you pay attention and take good notes.
She is very clear with her lectures and will answer all questions. Only bad thing about this class is that there is alot of writing. It's all note taking besides on test days, but if you take good notes, you will get an A for sure. She even gives you the essay question before hand and if you plan it out then you will definitely get an A on tests.
Easy B. Effort-A. Detail-oriented notes plus moderate studying required. Quality of your notes determines your grade. Attendance mandatory for an A. Suggest typing notes-much faster which helps with Pinkney. Gives u the possible essay q's & short ans terms. MCQs are mostly straightforward. Good notes = A.(Don't use textbook.Bonus pts for attending)
Great professor, and as long as you pay attention in class, you'll do just fine. There is a lot of writing involved, but her tests are based off of her lectures, so at least you're writing useful information. The book was hardly necessary, as her tests/lectures weren't based on the book. She was very clear, and I found making an A to be very easy.
Worst teacher ever. Too much stuff to memorize, but I did it anyways. Got a B and not happy at all. Literally combined all her lectures in an essay and wrote all of that but still got a B. Please please please do not take her
Hands down the worst teacher I've had yet. Took her twice and realized it was bad idea. If you're a history major take her, if not, avoid this atrocity of a teacher.
Excellent in speech.
Have to take really good notes and use a bit of book to get good scores. She gives possible essay topics and short answer questions. Need to go through the notes thoroughly. good work on essays and short answer terms earn you easy A, as the multiple choices and fill in the blanks also usually come from those topics. Really helpful.
She gives extra credit questions in the exam. Plus, if you take good notes of her lecture and know them, exam will be easy for you. She does not emphasize on dates. So, know what happened and its importance and you are all set.
If you don't like to write then this professor isn't for you. She doesn't use powerpoints for any of her lectures. She writes an outline on the board and then everything from then on is oral. If you miss one class you will most likely fail that test. Her tests involve short answers and essays so don't just memorize---know your facts.
I loved taking her class! Her lectures are super clear. Just make sure to write down everything and record her lectures in case you miss anything. The best way to make an A in this class is to memorize your notes. Tests are hard, but not impossible.
If you're gonna take her class don't expect an easy A. She will make you work for it. Her lectures are very clear but also boring.
Skipping class is almost suicide. She covers 4-6 complete pages of notes every class. It is all lecture and everything she says is significantimportant and needs to be known. Textbook is way to long and confusing to rely on, hard to spot the topics she asks about. There are only 3 tests and 1 quiz which make up your entire grade.
This class was stressful, she gives you the 2-3 POSSIBLE essay topics ahead of time but even then you are wondering which to study more. There are only 3 essay exams with a few multiple choiceshort answer in them. Her exams are essay based! Do not take her if you can't come to class EVERYDAY. You will def need a laptop in order to have good notes.
She doesnt do blackboard so thats dumb. No assignments, just a few tests and a single quiz. Go to class and pay attention in lecture and you will do fine. The only textbook I needed was the Frederick Douglass biography. She goes quickly through material sometimes, so i recommend taking notes on a laptop. It's a very simple class and I recommend it
If you don't have crazy note taking skills you will fail. Only thing she uses is the chalkboard to draw up an outline of her lecture. Then she goes through the outline skipping here and there, and you cant tell if the info shes giving you is critical or not. UNORGANIZED. Doesn't even use blackboard. The sole source of info is her verbal lecture.
Dr. Pinkney is an amazing professor. She is very interested in the material she teaches and has a lot of information to share. If you are a history major, I definitely recommend taking one of her classes! If you aren't a history major, the workload and pressure to study might not be worth it.
I had studied history but had never learned history before I took this class. Dr. Pinkney focuses on events and how they lead to other events rather than on names and dates. Thus, understanding is the key. Plus, there are a lot of extra credits offered to make scoring easy.
I had studied history but had never learned history before I took this class. Dr. Pinkney focuses on events and how they lead to other events rather than on names and dates. Thus, understanding is the key. Plus, there are a lot of extra credits offered to make scoring easy.
Her lectures are long and you pretty much have to write everything she says but she gives you EVERYTHING you need to make a good grade. Tests consist of short answer, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and an essay. She gives you the short answer terms and the essay topic BEFORE the test so take advantage! Textbook is completely unnecessary.
Great professor! Very clear lectures and tells you exactly what to expect on the tests. You need to go to class and take notes if you want to do good, so do not pick an 8:00 a.m. class! This is not a blow off class, expect to put in work for a good grade.
She is a walking encyclopedia and expects you to remember lectures word for word. Each test has an essay section and you are given 3 essay topics. Fail the essay portion and you fail the test. Be ready to write, write, write and memorize your practice essays. Skip class and you WILL fail. Would not take again.
She was very great at lectures and would explain everything thouroughly. But theres just so much info that she squeezes into just 3 exams! Unfair, and would not take again. She expects way too much for a history class, and grades hard.
Took Dr. Pinkney for intro to history and wish I had taken someone else. It should have been an easy A for someone who goes to class and takes good notes, but she makes it very hard to get an A. She is not very understanding or pleasant and you will not do well on tests if you don't start studying a few weeks before. Make sure to take good notes.
I love Dr. Pinkney, but I'm never taking her class again. She is a great teacher, and very passionate about history, but her tests are SO hard. I enjoy history, went every day, and took good notes but none of that showed on the tests. She only gives three tests and grades really hard on the essay and short answers. I loved her, but hated her tests.
Dr. Pinkney is an exceptional lecturer. You can really tell she is passionate about history. You NEED to go to class in order to get her lecture notes, which is what 99% of what her test is. Her tests are long (essay, short answer, multiple choice & fill in blank), however she provides all the necessary material to pass her class with an A.
