If you want to get an A, just copy the entire book onto your learning objectives, which are allowed to bring to the exams. She does NOT know what she is teaching. Basically you are just teaching yourself, which is what she wants anyway. According to her, teaching yourself makes you learn better than somebody else teaching you.

This class was ridiculously hard. Her tests are confusing and not easy at all. The homeworks are so long and have nothing to do with what will be on the test. You get to use your notes from the book on the test, but it isn't even helpful because she tests you on stuff you wouldn't have written down.

HORRIBLE!! Do not take her if you do not have to. Does not explain the material well. Homework has nothing to do with the tests just there for the credit. What she lectures on is not in her test. She believes in a reverse classroom where basically you have to learn the material ahead of time and she will just hit key points during lecture. This quickly becomes frustrating because you never know exactly how much she wants you to know about something unless you go to her office hours and ask. Her final was take home which helped immensely!

The best professor I have encountered when it comes to Biology. Although, her tests are difficult (based on concepts) if you read and understand the lecture notes, do the learning objectives and homework you will pass this course. Dr. Rafferty was an overall very nice professor and was always willing to help. She provided Learning Objectives to help self-teach the class and allowed us to bring these LO's during the exam. It was Dr. Rafferty's first semester teaching at UNLV. She was very sweet and helpful, let us use our "LOs" on the test (if you attended class and got the notes stamped), and tried to explain any questions. BUT tests were hard because of the wording of her questions and she got confused a bit in lecture . She lets you fight any iffy question.

This class, and tests, are based solely around lectures. Having the book helps cement concepts, but not needed if you're a strong student. Daily tophat quizzes help her ensure attendance, but 3/5 is all that is needed for points. She knows her stuff, and anyone who thinks otherwise likely didn't put in the necessary time.

BIOL189 is a hard course. It's two full semesters of upper level BIOL crammed into one semester. The tests are multiple choice. Either you know the answer or you don't. Study guides are given for each exam. If you actually put effort into the assignments, GO TO LECTURES and Office Hours you'll have no problem. She even gives exam study guides.

Dr. Rafferty has tunnel vision when it comes to ways that students should study, and that is reflected in her lectures and notes. She believes students should write down notes in order to understand concepts, and has called out individuals for taking photos of new concepts brought up in class. Advice for the tests, read the book more than the notes

You have to watch video lectures before class, she reviews them in class, and then expect 2-3 hrs of homework a week on top of that.
