I didn't read any of her assigned articles, didn't read the textbook, didn't take too many notes and got an A on her exam. She tries to be fun and cool but her lectures are boring and she just reads off the slides.
I have not taken her exam yet, so you can't look at the easiness factor. But, she is awesome! She knows and is passionate about what she teaches and is always willing to help you. She has fun examples and is engaging with the class. I enjoy this class very much! Trust me, shes one of the nicer and caring professors at BU
She is a very clear instructor, her strength. She tries to make class interesting, but it didn't really work for me. She's really approachable. I would definitely enjoy having her as a professor again, though.
She makes a great bureaucrat. Tests were badly written--double negatives, multiple choice questions with 2 right answers. her powerpoints were copied from the textbook, and she's not the best lecturer. Avoid if possible.
She certainly shows her enthusiasm within her work. While the exam was challenging, it wasn't death. Likewise, she is one of the nicest professors at BU you can run into. You just need to go to her office hours and tell her your biological interests. The book is helpful but not necessarily required. However, make sure to read suggested papers.
Great lecturer but I studied all the slidesbook and the test was so difficult. Poorly worded exam which was confusing. I wasn't expecting such a difficult exam. She was definitely very friendly and approachable though.
Good lecture, somewhat difficult exam, but very nice and approachable!
Dr. Spilios is one the most caring, warm-hearted, and helpful professors I have had. I never felt hindered to ask her a question and I always received a thoughtful and helpful reply. Her exams are not easy, but they are connected with her lectures. I enjoyed having Dr. Spilios for BI107 and wish she would also teach BI108.
Loved Spilios, she was so smart and easy going with exams.
Lots of work.
It's unfortunate that she does not teach the BI 108 lectures. However, she still is in charge of the labs. Luckily, Spilios is always around and is very helpful both on Piazza and when students have specific grading questions.
For one, I find her lectures very boring. She tries to be funny but it doesn't make lectures any easier to sit through. She works very fast through her power points which are sometimes 130+ slides. She also very quickly goes through clicker questions not giving students enough time to answer resulting in a zero for a grade. She doesn't teach well.
Absolutely terrible. She spent two lectures on prevailing winds and the remaining ones on the varying natural cycles and did not create an exam relevant to what was taught.
Although her powerpoints were not the best but readable, her exam was very easy. I just hate how the class is taught by 4 separate professors and each pofessor tests us differently, some ask general questions, some ask specific ones. Of the 4 professors, Spilios was the best.
She's a very good lecturer; however, she's boring. Lectures dragged on and on. The material wasn't hard, but the tests were very hard! The questions went above and beyond the level of material we learned. Also about five chapters were covered in 3 weeks. The next section included 1 chapter in three weeks. A little uneven if you ask me.
Dr. Spilios was a very clear lecturer. Her lectures went at a good pace and were detailed enough not to have to rely on the textbook. Overall, she was a very sweet lady. Her test questions were very general.
If you care about taking good, clean notes in class, AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. Spilios's lectures move at the speed of light and you will get nothing down. If you do end up stuck with her in BI108 (in BI107 you have no choice; they cycle professors after each exam), my advice for her section: DO NOT SLEEP, just pay attention and use the LAs' S2S notes.
Spilios was a great teacher because she always took feedback and was always routing for her students. She usually was very clear on what was on her exams and would make it a discussion and consider what we wanted. She also sometimes brings her daughter to class who is adorable. You can tell she is a mom shes super caring.
Maybe she's nice. I don't know. What I can tell you is that her lab manual and sections for 107 are the biggest wastes of time I've ever done.
In BI107, Spilios was my favorite of the 4 professors they cycle through the semester. She is knowledgable, and makes the lectures bearable. Be warned though, the test is NOT EASY, which I did not expect based on the lectures. her lectures are also VERY DENSE and she moves super quickly.
Spilios was my favorite of the 4 professors. Her lectures are extremely dense and her ppts are mainly pictures so you NEED to go to class to do well. I wish she was able to have more time, because she covers about 5 chapters in a three week span. Since there is a time crunch she does give basic information and doesn't question on details.
Prof. Spilios was very clear with her explanation of course material but lectures were often monotone and boring. Very easy to get distracted but her tophat questions are difficult so important to pay attention. Her exam was fair but required a lot of studying to do well. Overall a good professor.
Her class is super hard. She goes really fast for lectures, and you HAVE to pay attention. Quizzes every week. She covers an insane amount of material, and her tests frequently have stuff that she didn't really teach. You have to know the stuff really well, or you will fail. She may be nice, but her class is awful. Hard lecturer for a hard class.
Nice person, but not so great of a professor. Her lectures go so fast that you wont be able to keep up even when using a computer. She sometimes doesnt explain things well, in which case youll NEED to read the book. Grading is clear, she emphasizes whats important for the test. However, the tests are much harder than the lectures make it seem.
Best teacher I have ever had! Her enthusiasm and passion while teaching made class a bit more fun. She is someone who wants to get the best of you and prepares her tests accordingly. The tests are more application based than memory based.
Professor Spilios is a very caring and intelligent lecturer. She takes the time to make sure the class is following, even in a lecture of 100+ people. She covers all of the material you need for the tests in class and you would never be tested on something she doesn't cover. The book is not necessary but definitely helpful for clarifying lectures.
Spilios is the head of BI107 and knows her stuff. Her lectures were weirdly paced where she would go really slow and then skip through five slides. Pay attention to her explanation of the examples because they help with the concepts. Take good notes on her examples because some of the slides don't have notes. She loves a good video. Exam was fair
Dr. Spilios is a really awesome person. Her advice for being successful in BI107 went VERY far for me, and when you talk to her, you know she truly cares about all her students. However, her lectures are extremely dense with material and she moves rather quickly, so you gotta work for that A. Overall, a good lecturer - would recommend for BI107/8!
Definitely choose Spilios if you can. She has a really great lecture style that keeps you engaged and she's passionate about what she's teaching, so I definitely recommend. She's also the head for the undergraduate biology program so I would definitely get close with her.
Kind of annoying professor. Would always skip around and wasn't very clear on what was important for the exam. Would not recommend.
Really frusturating because she always skipped around and never made it clear what she was focusing on. Also liked to go into lightspeed randomly. Don't take her if you can avoid it.
I really enjoyed her class. The period she taught at the end of the semester was amazing! She can get a little boring but I really enjoyed her vivid examples. You can get an A if you review the powerpoint and attend office hours. The textbook is not really needed unless you need a refresher since she pulls from the book. Very nice professor.
Professor Spilios is a good lecturer. She is clear in explaining the topic. I took notes during her lectures, reviewed for a few hours before her tests, and did well. Her class is not a lot of work because she explains concepts thoroughly and her tests aren't difficult if you study. A good professor. Would recommend.
Didn't really specify what was on the exams. Unlike the other to professors that taught my section
Spilios is so kind but as a professor she is ok AT BEST. Her slides are extremely minimal with maybe a sentence or two accompanied by a complicated diagram or picture. she then goes on to lecture for about 10 minutes for each slide so essentially, unless you have background in BIO, its hard to follow. need to reteach yourself everything for tests.
I really appreciate Professor Spilios. She explains the material clearly and has a semester plan that tells you which topics she will be covering each week. I've read the chapter before almost every lecture, and while you don't have to, it helps. Exams are more application based (not memorization based), which I like as well.
Super nice, has a total mom vibe. Has a different style of lecturing than some other bio professors which takes a little to get used to. She will go over anything you don't understand even in a huge lecture. She does her online lectures really well... like how..??
Her online lectures were so amazing, super helpful and concise. She cares deeply for students so just reach out to her for any help. I was not signed up for her lecture, but she was a silver lining of COVID, as 2/3 of online lectures were form her.
I wasnt officially in her class, but I had her lectures because of covid-19 and I felt I needed to leave a review to just explain how amazing she was. Her lectures were so clear and easy to understand and she she truly cared about all of the students and wanted to help them succeed during this hard time. This was my favourite class by far.
If you're debating whether to take Loechler + Tolan for BI108 or Spilios, take Spilios. I love Loechler but Tolan is unbelievably unengaging. Spilios, however, is a better lecturer than people give her credit for.
Recommended for BI 108. Her slides are clear and she is very caring if you email her with any problems. Idk why people are giving her so many bad ratings. Her slides are very concise and she is a great lecturer. Test material comes from her lecture AND slides so you must come to class and take notes!
Overall she's an okay professor. She talks pretty fast and there's not many words on her slides so you have to take notes on what she says. Exams are on the harder side but not crazy. She's a sweet professor but certainly not easy.
She is the sweetest! Even on zoom calls she makes sure everyone is understanding the material! Very motivating and super accessible as well. She will explain anything you ask!
Spillios is such an amazing person and really made bio107 fun. The other professors are great as well but her lectures make everything easy to understand. If you watch lectures and take notes, you'll do fine!
Spilios is an amazing professor. She presents the information clearly and its easy to understand. Shes considerate of what her students need and will always go over something again if you need it. Her quizzes are exactly what youd expect (i got 100 on all of them) Shes also a great professor to get to know :)
I love Spilios! She genuinely cares about each of her students and is easy to communicate with outside of class. She made lectures enjoyable and her quizzes were always straightforward with no trick questions (shed also give credit if a lot of students got a question wrong). Textbook isnt mandatory but definitely helpful. Take Spilios if you can!
Sweet. She is really caring as well. She is most likely a lot better than your other choices. Only thing I can say is that sometimes her lectures are a bit all over the place so stay focused. Don't regret taking her.
She's a great professor. She made every concept easy to understand and the learning process was quite fun. Her quizzes/exams are comprised of mainly analysis and application-based problems. This is an easy A class if you stay on top of your lectures.
Professor Spilios is so kind and understanding, she really wants to make sure her students get it. She incorporates great examples into her lectures and really engages you even though it is just her lecturing. I truly learned a lot.
Spilios' teaching style is a mess. BI108 involves a lot of complex multiple-step processes. She would first explain each step broadly, then go back into each one with detail, making notes confusing. She skips around slides and goes out of order, and doesn't explain concepts that well. I did well based solely on taking the class in high school.
I dont know why people are saying her BI 108 class is hard. Took it in the spring (when it was LFA) and she was such a caring professor. She genuinely wants her students to do well and outlines everything you need to know from the slides. You dont need the textbook at all! For those of you who took AP Bio in high school, this class shouldnt be bad!
Prof. Spilios is a very passionate and caring lecturer. She loves taking question both during and outside of lecture. She obviously loves what she is teaching. Be wary of the LCIs (learning check-ins) and exams, since they're fairly difficult.
Spillios is amazing. She truly cares and is always open to questions. She makes sure we know she is available out of the classroom as well. She is passionate about the subject, so it makes learning even more engaging. I got super into biology because of her enthusiasm. If you pay attention and take good notes, you should pass with no problems.
Spilios taught us in the second half of the trimester and the assignment we get is weekly LCI. They don't count for participation, but you should watch recorded lectures. She provides the slide presentations of each week. Spilios is very accessible outside of class, and she will answer questions during lecture too. Her lectures are easy to follow
BI 107 is taught by three professors who divide the semester into sections where the material is their strong suit. Spilios who you spend half the semester with is a gem. She is amazing and cares so much about her students.
dr. spilios is so intelligent, accomplished, & passionate. def hard to get an A (lab, weekly quizzes, & 2 midterms), but her in-depth lectures worked better for me than the other 2 professors (bi107 has 3 professors throughout one semester). there is no curve but the bio department emphasizes collaboration (everyone CAN get an A).
Dr. Spilios is solid. Keeps lectures fun, but the pace can be a bit slow at times. Quizzes and tests are easier than other BI 107 teachers, in my opinion.
Spilios's class was really interesting, she is very heavy on concepts instead of examples. She really wants you to understand the content but her lectures are a bit confusing. In order to pass the class, you almost have to teach yourself as some of the content is very confusing. Also, don't bother getting the textbook its useless.
BI107 was split up into three different sections with different professors! Professor Spilios was my favorite out of those three - she is super caring and engaging. The two tests are weighted to be a lot of your grade, so that is where I struggled - but that is not due to her teaching! Biology is hard, but take Spilios if you can for lecture!
She was pretty good for teaching BI107, but BI108 has been pretty bad. She explains concepts poorly and backtracks often. it is unclear how much or what you are supposed to know because she explains processes using pictures not words. Exams are always placed after breaks or long weekends RIP
I had Spilios for BI 107 & she was great. In BI 108, she made the course a lot more difficult to balance. Every two weeks there is an exam. You end up spending your entire weekends and long holiday weekends studying for exams. She also does not explain concepts well and often just shows a picture instead of using words so taking notes is difficult.
One of the best spoken professors I have ever had. Amazing at explaining course material. More then willing to explain in other words if one feels that her explanation is unclear. Very knowledgeable about biology. Beware that most of the exam questions require deep understanding in order to apply.
Very kind and caring professor. No weird ultra-specific questions on exams. Dr. Spilios will tell you how many questions from each topic will be on the exam. She has lots of OH slots and constantly invites students to come and talk about whatever. She WANTS to give a nice gradual intro to the soon-to-be-difficult topics. Absolute gem.
Spillios was a difficult professor. I frequently went to her for help and she was fine helping me, but when it came to grades, Spillios was apathetic at times. Bio 2 is a weed-out class and it shows. The tests are only 30 questions and all of our test averages were at or below 80% and Spillios accepted that and even increased the test difficulty.
Spilios is amazing! She is passionate and knowledgeable and genuinely wants you to succeed. No grade deflation; you do need to be well versed in the material and be able to APPLY the concepts on the exams. Textbook is useful if confused but not needed, labs are meticulously graded; 6 exams total averaging 80% each. Take notes & go to office hours!
BI 107 was frankly boring but Spilios was the best lecturer of the three! LCIs every weekend were not that bad, and I miss having only two midterms (I just finished BI 108 which had 6). Textbook is not needed and labs are tedious but study regularly and go to office hours - she wants you to do well! Exams are not curved so make sure you prep well.
Spilios is great! She is very accessible outside of class. Although her tests are difficult, they are all based on her lectures and you can supplement the information with textbook readings if you'd like. Overall did not take too much of my time and the bio department is understanding.
I had her for BI107 and I thought she was amazing. She explains concepts very well. She is very enthusiastic about the class. Though some say that she talks slow and causes some people to fall asleep. (Just skip lecture and watch the recording in 2x speed). Exams are not memorization-focused. It's very easy and you just need to apply concepts.
Quizzes were 11% each for a total of 66% for the semester. Originally struggled with them but learned how to study for them (be prepared for application questions). Personally havent been to her OHs but have heard good things. Mostly review of HS bio but going deeper into the topics. Great lecturer
Professor Spilios brings a lot of energy to her lectures and knows how to teach large lecture classes. Her tests/grading are always fair. There were a lot of exams, but they only covered five lectures-worth of content. Lab was sometimes random/unnecessary but if you have any background in bio from high school, this course will be a great refresher.
ngl it is hard to get an A. 66% lecture grade (dictated solely by 6 exams) & 33% lab grade. however, dr. spilios is intelligent, engaging, & wants us to do well. she makes it clear she wants to help us & is so kind & smart. we love to see a women in stem
Professor Spilios seems like a really nice professor and passionate about biology. That being said, lectures aren't mandatory and she gives out slides before every lecture. Grades are dependent on exams and labs, so even if you don't go to the lectures, watching the recordings is really helpful.
Professor Spilios is so understanding, and is always willing to help.
Amazing professor!! One of the best professors I've ever met, definitely choose her for your biology beginning classes.
Kathryn is quite literally the best teacher woman I have ever known. She makes the course material very straightforward for someone who does not enjoy biology. You can tell she really knows what she is talking about and is enthusiastic about teaching. I strongly recommend taking one of her classes at your time at BU. Ily Kathryn
Lectures are phenomenal and she cares about all of her students. The quizzes only come from the slides so if you take good notes and read them you'll do fine on the quizzes. She is very good at making material easy to understand.
Professor Spilios is very good at explaining all the topics in detail and is always enthusiastic. Her lectures might seem a bit slow. All the lectures are recorded and saved. The pre-quiz reviews were great. Very accessible outside of class if you need help.
Spilios is an excellent lecturer. She is able to break down very detailed concepts into smaller pieces and applies them to life examples for easy learning. Sometimes I felt that she was going too slow during the lectures but that was just my opinion as other students thought that she went too fast. Overall, highly recommend her class.
Professor Spillios was great! I definitely recommend taking her class. BI107 overall was a fairly easy course, quizzes were very fair. If a majority of students got a quiz question wrong, Spillios would remove the question.
Spilios was a great lecturer, made everything easy to understand, gave plenty of time to follow along and take notes. The content was not too hard, I barely used the textbook since she covered everything needed in class. Lab attendance is mandatory, lecture isn't but it has all the info. Definitely would take again and recommend others to as well.
I usually hate topics related to evolution and ecology, but she was so passionate and helpful that it made the class alright. Every lecture, she showed up on time, prepped and ready to go, super excited to teach, even with one of the biggest lectures at BU. 10/10 would take again!
Professor Spilios was alright, the problem is that she is incredibly boring and feels like a middle school teacher. She is very passionate about Bio but the transition from BI107 to BI108 is like a steep cliff, and I took AP bio. She's very slow and always has tech problems. Her TFs are also pretty lackluster since they rarely explain concepts.
I really benefitted from her lecture slides being accessible on blackboard, she teaches in a very simple but informative way.
Hard tests and a lot of applying concepts! Very passionate and kind professor and she wants the best for her students. She would love to talk to students in office hours and is very approachable. Ask her questions! Take her if you can but beware of tests!
While I didn't like her teaching style that much, I know that a lot of people liked her. Her exams aren't horribly hard but they are confusing and sometimes wordy. As a professor, Dr. Spilios is somewhat slow and pauses quite often. I would not recommend her if you struggle with paying attention in class. She's nice though.
Spilios is really amazing. She explained concepts in class so well and she's one of my favorite lecturers to talk to during office hours. Her quizzes are very much application based. All answers look similar yet different. You really need to read her slides more than a few times to really do well in her quizzes and get an A. If you can, take her.
Love prof spills soooo much. I took AP bio in HS and hated it, but this was my favorite class this semester and it's definitely because of her. Lectures are really helpful and there are so many resources provided to review before quizzes. Spillios is very engaging and tries her best to get students interested in the topics she teaches
kind, caring, beautiful, passionate, ethereal , knowledgeable, excited, enthusiastic, thank you, i love you kathryn
Very easy to understand and genuine care for her students.
Overall Spilios is a great professor! I would definitely recommend her for BI 107. In my opinion, the lectures we a little slow and the class was too easy, but that is not really her fault because it is an intro bio class.
Professor Spilios is super caring and truly wants her students to succeed. She is the only BI108 professor that offered extra credit on quizzes and really loves her job. Her lectures are very clear and she is patient and kind even when people ask borderline stupid questions. Understand, don't memorize the material and you will get an easy A.
Spilios is such a mom, she cares about each of her students so much and always asks people to come into her office hours to get to know them. Even with the other 200 people in class, she would make time to meet with me and help improve my study skills. When I got a 100 on an exam, she emailed me congratulating me.
Professor Spilios is one of the most caring people I have ever met. She genuinely wants you to understand concepts throughout her lectures and office hours, and she makes a lot of comparisons that make concepts easier to understand. As long as you study and attend/watch lectures, you'll be fine. She also had 3-4 extra credits for our quizzes!
anyone who gave spillios a bad review is actually such a liar. I took ap bio in hs and it was atrocious & I failed the AP, so when I took BI107 here I was so scared I was gonna fail. ended with an A because that class was a BREEZE with dr spillios's lectures. BI108 is admittedly much harder but I still did very well in the class. queen spillios fr
I hadn't taken bio since my sophomore year of high school before this class and it was still one of the easiest I've ever taken. Spilios' lectures are very clear, and only material from lectures is on the quizzes. The quizzes cover about five lectures of material, so they are pretty easy to study for. Lab is graded a little picky, but still easy
She is an outstanding lecturer. She is very focused on making sure you learn the material. Although attendance isn't mandatory, I would highly recommend going. Definitely would take her again
enjoyable lectures but slower speaker. content wise, pace was medium but i can see how it can be too slow. theres no homework and in class only grades are tests (dates given at beginning of semester) you can retake one quiz at the end. always ends lectures early, has student tutor notes posted for each lecture+lecture recording+quiz review zooms.
Dr. Spilios was amazing this semester. The grading criteria for the class was incredibly clear, and she let us know how to improve our grade. She gave us recommendations on how to take notes (which worked very well!). She had ample, and helpful office hours. She & the whole biology department were great about accommodations.
Amazing lectures and shows that she cares about her students, there is no final and quizzes are generally easy if you study. She and other TA's are always there for you. Overall a very caring and amazing professor.
Really knowledgeable and caring. Lectures were clear and engaging. Even with a class size of 200+ students, she still takes the time to call on people who raise their hands, which makes it feel like a much smaller class. Quizzes are easy if you take notes and study. Shoutout to the TAs as well, their tutor notes and review sessions were amazing!
Dr. Spilios is very nice and gives amazing lectures. She cares about what she does and is passionate about it. If there is a professor you want help from and are struggling, she is very accessible outside of the lecture and will meet with you to help! Make sure to study for her exams though, especially the slide shows she has for lecture.
I love her!! The class is mostly first-semester freshmen, so most of our tests all had an average of about 87 percent. Just go to class and listen to her lectures. If you go to class, and review a couple of times, you'll ace all the tests. She's so smart and kind, a great lecturer and person.
Spilios is the kindest person and is amazing at explaining things if you are confused. BI107 content is literally all just memorization and is really easy, esp with her. Lectures are recorded, attendance is not mandatory but she gives extra credit in class. Your grade is 66% quizzes and rest is labs. No curve
she is awesome- great lecturer, passionate about biology, funny, and very nice. highly recommend.
Professor Spilios is such a diva, I love her. Her lectures are clear and the tests follow the material presented in class. I really appreciated her positive attitude and genuine care.
she's a great and sweet person but i really do not like her teaching style. she will talk about a topic, move on from it, and then go back to it later or add something. makes your notes unorganized and harder to study. labs are also unorganized, no clear rubric or instructions are given until you get your grade back
Good lecturer. Caring.
Dr. Spilios is an amazing professor. To be successful you do need to study and come to class. Her lectures are very clear and can be boring but she does her best to be super engaging on topics that may not interest everyone. Definitely attend the review sessions. I got a C+ due to lack of studying but that was on me and the average was a B+.
Spilios is a passionate professor who genuinely cares about her students. The class is engaging, but the tests are challenging and require strong application of concepts. Unstuck AI and the provided review materials were lifesavers for exam prep.
Spilios is an incredible and passionate lecturer. She has an incredibly comfortable energy. She is very clear about what is tested on while teaching methodically. 6 multiple-choice quizzes a semester with a fair level of difficulty. I saw her try harder throughout the semester to help students. I miss Dr. Spiliois!
Great prof but lectures could get boring at time so I didn't show up to many. She tries to make it as engaging as possible and she is always open to questions in class or in office hours.
Dr. Spilios is very passionate about biology. While the lectures are not required, and can be boring, there are often practice questions that are helpful for learning the material. She is always willing to answer questions during/after lecture, and her office hours are very helpful. She really wants her students to succeed.
Spilios has great lectures that are informational that get posted online after and recordings get posted. Only mandatory to go to quiz days and lab. Grade consists of 6 quizzes and lab grade, quiz averages are Bs, they are not difficult but not easy. Textbook is not required but recommended. Very interesting class and very well structured.
Great professor, very helpful and understandable. Her lectures are slow sometimes but she explains really well. The course itself isn't too hard either because there's a lot of resources available, the tutors and videos of lectures are especially helpful even if you don't go to lectures.
Prof Spilios was very enthusiastic and good at explaining concepts. But either way you can just watch recorded lectures. Exams are just six quizzes every two weeks which are faily easy and only lecture content is on them. There is no outside homework just lab, but lab is a bit off track from the class. Your lab grades depend heavily on your TA.
Dr. Spilios is the best professor at BU and she genuinely cares about YOU as an individual and a student. If everybody was like her, all universities would be a much better place. She is phenomenal. She is super fair, super caring, and VERY VERY passionate about Biology. Dr. Spilios is the epitome of what a professor and a person should aspire to.
Dr. Spilios is awesome. BI 108 is definitely harder than BI 107, but if you show up to lecture, you'll be fine. She's very accessible outside of class and she's a nice person. She makes jokes during lecture. I'd recommend the class.
THE BEST PROFESSOR AT BU. Although BI108 is def harder than 107, it's still completely manageable to get an A with her. She is amazing at explaining things and genuinely wants you to get an A. She is so accessible outside of class and she is the sweetest person on earth. TAKE HER CLASS.
very animated when lecturing, makes it easy to understand and stay focused!
Took Dr. Spillios for BI107 and 108 freshman year. Her lectures are super engaging because she's so passionate about biology and really cares about her students. She's always willing to help outside of class and before quizzes. The class itself isn't too hard. I'm just not great at multiple choice which really affected my grade.
Genuinely one of the best professors at BU. BI 107 has in-class, participation-graded polling questions that contribute to your grade, but can be done at home (attendance is basically optional, as she posts recordings). There are 6 relatively easy quizzes in the class that make up the grade. No homework aside from pre-lecture readings and lab work.
Dr. Spillios is a fantastic professor. Her lectures are very informative and quizzes are very fair.
Bi108 is harder than BI107 but the lectures are still very straightforward and quizzes are very fair. It just takes a bit more effort to do well.
Spillios is definitely one of the best professors you could have when it comes to taking biology for the first time at BU! She's very enthusiastic, which definitely helps making the lectures engaging. The slides do tie pretty well to the actual exams/quizzes (6 of them throughout the year, where you can make up one of them during the "final").
LOVE HER. She is so good at giving lectures and is a great speaker. Her tests are not too hard (multiple choice) so just pay attention during lectures. She genuinely cares about her students and is a great person overall. Take her class!
The best. She is the sweetest, most passionate prof. out there.
Great lectures and not homework-heavy. Quizzes are fair. She sometimes talks a bit slow, which makes it hard to pay attention, but overall amazing.
AWESOME professor super kind and I really suggest going to office hours for her class if you are confused about material. She is engaging lecturer and made me interested even more in biology take her class!
Dr. Spilios is a great lecturer and if you just attend the lectures you will be set for the quizzes! This is an optional final class and I loved it like that!
Dr. Spilios is an amazing professor. Her lectures are engaging and the class flies by while talks. She is engaging and uses poll questions in lecture that count for a portion of the grade. She is also accessible outside of class, with students able to book office hours online. The class average on quizzes was a 90% and the final is optional.
Dr. Spilios is not only an excellent professor but also an amazing person. She truly wants to see everyone succeed, which I find to be an extremely admirable quality, especially given how the Chemistry department is here. Dr. Spilios makes sure that the material is digestible, and she also posts all the lecture recordings!
