Gives alot of homework. Fair on tests and homework. You will know the HW when you are done.
Way too much homework. Assigns so much HW that you never have time to get to the really hard problems. Then tests on problems much harder than the hard HW problems. I would avoid this teacher if possible.
Homework due every class period. Typicaly very hard homework, and even harder tests. You may find things on the test, that wern't covered in the homework. Avoid this teacher.
Class motto; "Just remember everything you might have done in math and you will be ok." Things on test that she didn't cover in lecture or assign in hw. Confronted her and she will not take accountability for it. Her response was "Well it looks like you need to do all the problems in the homework."
For having a docterate in math, she doesn't exsplain things very well. You pretty much have to figure things out for yourself by the homework problems, which could take you 4 hrs a day with the problems she assigns. The tests are not comparable to the homework. They are substancially harder.
She demands alot of homework and it is always due the next day.She likes to show that she knows what she is doing, but she does not like to teach how to do things. On tests she picks the hardest problems ones you might not have covered even.No credit for trying if its not completely right its wrong!!
She is an extremely smart teacher, but this is where she looses you. It is hard to follow what she is doing because she writes so fast, also gets mad if you just are not getting it. SHE IS HORRIBLE AT TEST REVIEWS, She expects you to know EVERYTHING and she doesnt believe in example questions. Beware
There is a difference between covering material and teaching. Kathy Andrist does not seem to understand this difference. Her lectures provide little help in learning the material and her test reviews are most unhelpful. If you are looking for a good calculus teacher I recommend looking elsewhere.
She knows what she is talking about, but do we? Her clarity is limited and 1 out of 10 lectures does it make any sense. Homework was too much at fist but she did let up on that so that helped her get a 2 on being helpful. Her office hours are a joke and well..be prepare to take this course over!
horrible tests!
Tests are the worst. She tests on stuff never even taught. She uses mostly trig in all the test questions. She doesn't teach the material very well. She has 3-4 hours of homework due every day. She is impossible to get a good score in unless you are a phd in math already.
She is very smart I respect her for that. I really felt like I learned the material well. The tests are very difficult but somehow the grading seems to all work out in the end. I would recommend her for anyone who is really wanting to become an expert in mathematics.
Want to learn Calc? find another instructor. Extremely smart lady, but fails in the delivery!
Difficult. She teaches you, but I took another teacher after and passed easily. I learned, but tests eliminated me even with her uncharacteristic help. I'm not brightest math star, but class lost most students before mid semester & failed half of remaining dozen(including me).
Worked my butt off in the class and was marked down on tests for grammar or messy writing not on the math. Tried my hardest all year to sucseed and was very surprised with the result. She must curve at the end or rate on how hard you try because I received a much better grade then I expected.
She tries to make her students think, and most of them won't put up with that. I thought she was a great teacher.
She flies through the book, doesn't teach the stuff needed in the homework, homework every night, tests are extremely difficult, she doesn't realize that we are not math majors and don't give a crap like she does, tries to intentionally trick you on tests.
"My daughter is in high school, and she's doing the same math you are"...(student comments 'can we slow down, I dont understand')..."If you think I'm going fast now, you should see me in my other classes..." ENOUGH SAID!!!
the worst!!! This teacher doesn't teach. She tricks you on tests, does not do her job well at all. Avoid her at all costs.
She's hard to understand, gives way too much homework and her tests are a joke.
2 hrs HW every day and hard tests. There are a lot more problems in her tests than you actually have time for. It was hard but I don't know if it 'coz of the teacher or just 'coz math is hard period.
Wow! What a joke! This is the worst class I have ever. She doesn't wxplain anything then tests everyone on stuff she never talked about. Her excuse for that was "Well, you should have read the book and done it on your own!" Yeah, I want to take a class from someone like that!
Excellent Teacher. Lots of homework but it boosts your grade in the end. With a little work, easy A.
She was extremely hard she would let you come talk to her if you couldn't understand something, but she usually confused me more after I talked to her than I was before. She also pulled a lot of stuff we didn't learn and put it on the test.
Her tests are obscene, but her teaching is actually quite thorough.
Don't take the class from her if you have the choice. She has something to prove not something to teach.
DO NOT TAKE HER AT ALL COSTS. 3/4 OF HER CLASS HAS TAKEN THE SUBJECT OVER AGAIN. SHE IS HORRIBLE.
She goes at an extreemly fast pace and requires about 2-3 hours of homework every night. The homework is graded and she does not allow it to come in late!
This class is like milk. It is good for only 2 weeks.
She was a great teacher. She was very helpful and always willing to answer questions. If you go to the board often she will give you the higher grade if you're on the border. I probably should have got a half letter grade lower than I got. Highly recommend!!!!!:)
Kathy was extremely difficult. Not recommended.
Kathy is nice teacher. Those of you who think she is hard didn't try or didn't get the material. Although, I wouldn't recommend her for the simple fact that homework is usually due everyday you have class. However, she gives test make-ups and if you be-friend her (she knows your name well) you get the good grade.
Lets be honest- her class isn’t hard if your willing to put up with her pathetic busy-work centered teaching method- oh wait- did I just suggest that she actually has some sort of method? That’s the best joke I’ve ever made! She is nothing but a joke. I have never had a more pathetic teacher or associated with a more inept individual- Avoid her!!!
tough teacher, doesn't really care about students
Difficult teacher. Seems nice at first but grading is ridiculous. Questions on test are the hardest ones she can find and says partial credit is possible, but doesn't follow through with it. I would take it from another teacher if I had the chance.
I had a hard time understanding the concepts she tried to teach. She was very unclear; she would test on the absolute hardest concepts; the math lab was worthless for this class, and office hours weren't much help either. Avoid this teacher if your schedule permits. If she is the only teacher available in a time slot, good luck!
Great Trig teacher. Very knowledgeable and helpful. I highly recommend her class.
Amazingly nice and will help anyone that comes to her! She teaches the hard class so its not her fault if its not easy for you! If you like math, you will love her
Easy to pass! Just show up and listen. She is very knowledgable and helpful!
She explains very well, but she tests hard. You will learn the material very well. I would highly suggest her to anyone. She also is very helpful if you don't really get something.
Hard, but very good. explains things in a way you can understand and is very helpful if you need extra help. Highly recommend her if you actually want to get something out of math class.
Do whatever you have to do to avoid taking this class... I MEAN IT. Everybody warned me about her, but I was too stubborn to listen to them. She'll give you hours and hours of HW per day. Isn't willing help you out. Class started with 28 students and ended with 13... The other 15 were smart n changed the class. Only 30% of students passed. Good luc
She is wonderful but expects a lot from each student!
Nice but way too strict. She gives no leeway. Has no sympathy. I missed a week of school because of swine flu and she was my only teacher that didn't work with me. She made me come in sick and take the test because she said I couldn't make it up. She also didn't let me make up any of the HW i missed. Wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
Terrible way to start of my first year of college. She teaches as if she is being forced against her will. She does not care about the material and she does not care if the students learn at all. She manages to make fairly simple concepts extremely complicated. Tests are ridiculously hard for the material she teaches. A totally unfair class
i really liked professor andrist. i'm pretty good at math and she helped me understand the material even more. she expects alot from her students but if you pay attention then you will do well.
Kathy is a good teacher. But to get the most out of the class you have to do homework and go see her. She is very happy to meet with you during office hours. SHe is strict but 1050 is a tough class. No grade curving but will give you the grade you deserve. Really nice but tough-if you miss a test no retake or reschedule even if you tell her befor
I loved Kathy, I thought she was a great teacher. She does make you work hard for your grade but you will KNOW the material once you're done with her class. She explained things perfectly. You need to attend class to turn in homework and take notes. If you aren't willing to work hard then don't take her; otherwise, she is great.
this is a difficult class but her teaching style works. she is willing to help during her office hours. She forced you to do the work but if you do it, it pays off. she has hard tests and not much extra credit. Difficult class but if you put in the work it WILL pay off
She is one of the hardest teachers I have ever had but she teaches better than any math teacher I have ever had. She expects a lot out of students but if you work hard you'll get an A.
Dr. Andrist is a hard teacher but definitely knows her stuff. If you're willing to put a lot of effort into her classes then you'll do well in the class.
Her tests are really hard. Especially compared to her homework. You do have homework almost every night. If you take her class, plan on being in the math lab everyday for hours. You have to put in a lot of time and effort into this class.
This teacher was horrible. I had a medical problem that kept me out for two days during the semester and she wouldn't except my work from those days. She will put stuff on the test that you didn't go over. ABout 30% of every test you will have never seen and you won't be able to figure it out. This sucked.DON'T take from her! 3-4 hours of HW da
Hands down one of the best teachers at UVU! The people who say she is hard don't really want to learn the material. She teaches you the material and expects you to know it! She is helpful and cares about the students. She is very organized, and provides quick feedback. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to really understand Calculus!
She's very apathetic to students... Don't take from her if you can help it. She doesn't care whether you pass or fail and you will have 2-3 hours of hw a day. She prides herself in knowing more than you (the student). Frustrating class and best of luck to you if you are unlucky enough to take it from her.
A good or passing grade is dependent on how much time one has available to study at the calculus lab, hire a private tutor, do 5 hours of homework a night, devote your entire soul to math, and become celibate to anything else outside of the subject. Quit your job, leave your family, and drop your other classes if you would like to pass this class.
She is a really nice professor, but sucks. I love math and she made me hate it. She doesn't teach it well at all and doesn't care about helping you out. Be prepared to study ALL the time to get a passing grade.
The class is useful. Its a challenge but you can pass if you want to.
Dr. Andrist is an excellent teacher- probably the best math teacher I have ever had! The material is pretty difficult, so be prepared to work hard. If you go to class and do the homework then the tests aren't bad at all. Dr. A is very helpful and patient, easy to understand, and she really knows her stuff! Highly recommended!
Yes, this class has been tough, but you WILL learn the material like the back of your hand IF you put in a little effort. Prof. Andrist is extremely fair, very patient, and she has a very cheerful and pleasant disposition. I'm very confused by comments to the contrary. If you love (or even just need) math, I highly recommend Prof. Andrist.
She is a really nice lady and all but her class is freaking ridiculous. I took MATH 1210 right before this class and i passed it like nothing with an "A". Her class i spent at least 3 hours everyday studying and doing homework in the math lab and i still only got a "D+". Her class sucks, DO NOT TAKE IT EVEN IF IT IS YOUR LAST RESORT.
It's math, so you have to put in a lot of effort if you want to learn the topic. But she is a good teacher! If you don't do well then you probably didn't put as much effort into learning as you should have. She held a study session before a test and only three people showed up. If you put in effort you can do well in the class.
Took Calc 3 from her. She was hard to follow and didn't explain things well. Found myself rereading the textbook so I could understand the material and get the homework done.
I actually don't have Professor Andrist, but she has been a sub the past couple days for my Calc class. I'm just here to tell you that up until now, all of us understood what was happening, and now we don't. I'll avoid her for Calc II and so will everyone else. She's nice. She's great. She just can't communicate the material...
Good person, not a good professor. She is so ridiculously hard! She makes you have anywhere from 20-80 questions due of homework each night on MyMathLab, she hates MyMathLab but makes us do it. She doesn't get test questions from MyMathLab but chooses the hardest problems that trick you on tests. If the answers are not 100% right her way it's wrong
Good person, decent teacher. Calc 2 with her was hard, but rewarding. She doesn't baby you towards getting a good grade. You have to put in the work to earn it. Nevertheless, that amount of work to earn it is a little much. Average 2 hours of homework per assignment (every day), with whatever time you spend studying for the tests on top. take luck.
She obliviously knows her math, the problem here is her delivery. Her style seems to accommodate one or two types of students; math enthusiasts, and math lovers. So if cannot learn from her, you'll fail this class. She gives a ton of homework and tests are hard. I wouldn't recommend this teacher. She seems to forget more and more often too.
Professor Andrist is a great teacher, she is super nice and really cares about you as a person.
Dr Andrist won't just teach you math, but teach you how to teach yourself math. Her assignments are geared towards actually understanding the math concepts . When I worked at all the assignments I felt really prepared for tests and didn't have to study a crazy amount (all though, expect to put in some quality hours for the final). Great teacher!
twice the effort and get half the learning. she is a phd teaching lower division. makes you completely digest the text, then come to her grueling pace lectures. reinhardt is better.
Kathy was one of the best Professors I ever had. She helped me graduate, and tried to get me to go through the actuary program, but I was too lazy to go all the way through, but she did help some of my peers succeed in the actuary program.
She's a nice lady but doesn't deliver good lectures. I had no idea what was going on during class and found it pointless to be there. She makes you read from a projector and talk about the problems. I would prefer to go through the work with step by step examples with a complete break down. I basically taught myself everything in this class
I think she's a good teacher, explains things well and is willing to answer your questions, you do have to do a lot of homework but its not too bad and I think her tests are really easy and she lets you do test makeups to get half credit on the points you missed.
Horrible teacher. Unfortunately there are not a lot of great teachers for trig, but no matter how hard I tried to study I failed. Every test is a midterm so if you fail one test good luck trying to pass. Lectures are very unclear and the material she puts on her tests isn't even on the homework sometimes. So needs to be fired.
Way harsh on grading homework and the tests are not like the homework at all, much harder.
A very good professor. She will make you work for it, but is very nice.
Homework and Tests are not in comparison. The Lecture materials usually are extremely long and only a very small portion is related to the homework. You need to do all the homework and read the whole chapter after to even think of getting a passing grade. If you fall behind there is no catching up and you will fail.
Professor Andrist was a nice person, and it seemed like she cared about what she was teaching. It was also very apparent that she wanted the students to actually learn. Although, the way she taught just was not my cup of tea. Many times she really overcomplicated things and made problems harder than they needed to be. Homework on ALEKS also sucks.
Prof Andrist is a really great person. She cares about her students but will really make you work for it. There is no curve for the class. Extra credit is very limited and is little compared to the work required to do. Her tests are ridiculously difficult. She does give good feedback and is accessible though.
I've probably learned more in her classes than any other class, in a good way. I've had 2 from her and will take more. Wish she had a higher rating on here, she deserves it
In this class we did it online through a computer program as a refresher for Math. It was good wasn't to hard, but you have to show up or it just means more work for you. If you just looking for a refresher in Math if you have been out of it for a while I highly suggest this class.
When I took 1220 from Prof. Andrist, it had been over 3 years since I had done Calculus. The first few weeks, I felt like I was drowning, but it didn't take long to catch up. Andrist is great at teaching and I enjoyed the class so much, I was considering switching my major to something Math oriented. I was very impressed with the class' quality.
I feel like students rate on here based on the difficulty of the class and not how well the professor taught. Kathy Andrist was a very good professor and taught for all students, not just natural genius's. She was relatable and had office hours available every day, which I feel like is pretty rare. I will definitely take her again in the future.
I was looking forward to this class, MATH 3300, but after the amount of work you are asked to do (More than the usual) I stressed going to class and I don't stress easily. We had to present theorems every day, and the theorems are complex and if you don't present you lose points. Her exams are very very heavy. Don't take this class from her.
I took foundations of geometry with her, it was thoroughly tough, a lot to retain, and attendance is critical. You're expected to present ever day, and you are guaranteed to feel like a fool in front of everyone by the trivial corrections she makes in class. She won't help you either, if you don't know the answer, you lose points for that day.
My main problem was how she would call on students (whether they were prepared or not) to solve problems in front of the class. This made it hard to show up if you weren't completely confident in the material for risk of humiliation. If that style works for you and you feel pretty confident in math, then she'll be perfect for you.
She is extremely strict, the undisciplined might need this. Very knowledgeable. It is a very difficult class.
This course was super homework heavy, but with time and discipline, it was manageable. Dr. Andrist explained things very thoroughly and made it clear that she wanted us to learn. She constantly let us know about her office hours and offered useful advice whenever I asked. I got COVID and missed an exam. She was very understanding and it worked out.
Calc 2 is one of the hardest classes I've taken for my major yet. However, Dr. Andrist made it engaging and fun! Show up to class every day and complete all of the homework assignments and you will do well. Dr. Andrist also has office hours every single day that I wish I had gone to more. Calc 2 is difficult, but Dr. Andrist made it doable!
Dr. Andrist was one of the best Professors that I have had period. It was apparent that she was passionate about math and wanted her students and class to succeed. Dr. Andrist made math fun and taught it in such a way that made sense. Sometimes she could be a little bit fast when working out problems and teaching but encouraged questions. Awesome.
Dr. Andrist is an amazing teacher and is very kind! She has office hours that you can use to get help on homework. The high difficulty is due to homework being due in class most days, which can take hours to complete. It does help you learn though. I really loved Dr. Andrist and wished she taught Calc 3! Highly recommend! Openstax textbook was used
Homework due most days, and it all has to be turned in-person because the *GRADER* requested paper copies this semester. The tests are well discussed beforehand, and if you do all of the HW and study guides for each exam, you'll do fine. Either go to her office hours or the math lab for ANY and ALL questions about HW and Study/Review Guides.
Definitely a lot of homework, and it all has to be turned in-person. The tests are very difficult, especially compared to the homework. She overcomplicates the lessons and spends more than half of class on the warm ups and then has to rush through the actual lesson.
She is awesome! 1050 is a hard class but she helped me understand the material. She's also super chill.
Dr. Andrist is VERY homework heavy I had 2 hours of homework a day. It helped me learn but it was a lot. She is a really nice person and will happily work with you. Her tests aren't easy, be prepared to work and study to get the grade you want. I would take her again, she made the class do-able.
Professor Andrist is strict but fair. The homework is time-consuming but helpful for learning. Definitely use office hours and supplements like unstuck ai to stay on top of the material. Not an easy A, but a worthwhile challenge.
Dr. Andrist really wants her students to succeed. The copious amounts of material in this class translates to a lot of homework (several hours a week), but you should be fine if you do all of the homework. Also, on tests, she allows you to choose 1 or 2 problems to skip.
Dr. Andrist is AMAZING. Calc 2 is hard, she makes it a lot easier to understand. Use office hours and SI sessions. There's a lot of homework, but that is to be expected with a class like this. If I had to take it over again, I would take every class with her. She even lets you choose a few free problems on tests! She wants you to succeed. TAKE HER!
Dr. A is AMAZING! She is very good at her job and wants you to do well. She gives free problems on her tests, some extra credit options. There's a lot of homework, but that's normal for Calc2. If Rhett is still the SI, GO TO SI SESSIONS!! They are amazing, and he knows what he's doing and how to best help you. If you're taking Calc2, take Dr. A!!
Amazing professor; she wants you to succeed. Her office hours and SI sessions are key. There's lots of homework, but never unmanageable. And if you have to skip a few, it's only worth 10% of your grade. Tests are worth 90%, so if you know the material well, that's all that matters. No notes in tests (except the finals), but it's always manageable.
