Kati is definitely the cutest teacher I have ever had! She also has a great personality and is such a sweet girl. Of course, there was a lot of busy work at times, but you'll find that in every English class. She is so open to help you out with revising your writing, and is genuinely concerned that you learn the styles of writing. She's great!
WOOT! WOOT!
Kati makes writing more fun and less stressful. There's a lot of work in this class, but she's a good teacher and if you come everytime you can stay on top of it.
I definitely wasn't looking forward to this class, but it was okay. She tries to make it interesting and it goes by faster then you expect. She's a really nice person.
Kati is genuinely concerned with her students and wants you to learn. I HATED how she made you stick to a trouble country to write about ALL semester. It made it hard for me to write on the different genres instead of being able to pick a topic of interest. The class isn't easy by all means, but you will learn what each genre needs to have etc.
I lOVED having Katie as an instructor. She has super relevant assignments that are related to stuff going on right now and she never gives busy work like some of those other English teachers. Plus, she'll help you out whenever you're having trouble. I wish I could take more classes from her.
She's a good teacher. I've always liked English classes, but Katie Lewis is extra thoughtful and perceptive. I loved how we would analyze things constantly ("critical thinking"), and even though it was quite a bit of work, it always felt manageable, and I learned a lot.
What I love about her is that she doesn't give the cookie-cutter English assignments and all the busy work. What I don't love is that it's English, but since it's required, she's a pretty good one to go with.
Friendly. Original. Not as boring as most engl teachers. And yes, hot.
When I had Katie, I dreaded the class. But I'm not the English type, and in retrospect it really wasn't that bad. I have to say that her emphasis on argument and grammar has really made papers for my other classes easier to do. So, thanks Katie!
First and foremost, her name is KATI, not KATIE... just incase you are looking for her...She is honestly one of the BEST teachers I have ever had. She turned me back on to enjoying English and taught me life long lessons! I would love to have her as a teacher anytime, and recommend her to ANYONE!
This teacher has soul! She is interseted in the students genuinly. I've never felt such empowerment, stretch, and intelligence from a teacher, or mentor. Words can't explain the knowledge she teaches and the life lessons you learn which will go with you everywhere!
She was an alright teacher, although I dreaded going to her classes. They were somewhat pointless, but mandatory. The worst were the papers and how she graded. She was pretty biased against men. She would make you feel guilty for not being a better writer and rarely compliment. Overall, would not recommend her class unless it's an absolute must.
I agree with the two comments below. She hates men. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Words can't explain the way I felt about taking this class. In a bad way. Sorry to say it, but I would dread going to this class almost every day. She explains things well enough but she needs everything to be exactly the way she wants it to be. If you're taking English with this teacher... I'm sorry. English isn't always this bad.
Kati is a very tough grader. Heavy workload. Very boring. Do not believe in those good comments unless you are a nerd. She does not encourage creativity in your writing. She wants you to do everything her way, and I think that is way annoying. I can feel that the whole class wanted it to end.
A very unforgiving grader. She seems to hold all students' papers to a ridiculous standard. I bet if you gave her a masterpiece by a fantastic writer without her knowledge, she would downgrade that paper into oblivion since it's not her "ideal." She doesn't understand how to teach properly based on the sheer amount of mindless work given.YesI'mMale
She was a tough grader. I thought it was helpful. I have had writing classes where some students who wrote very poorly received the same grades as those who wrote well. She is tough but fair. As a male, I can say that she doesn't hate men. My papers needed work. She met with almost every student to show them how she grades. More than fair.
Disclaimer: I am a nerd through and through, and I thought her class was great. End disclaimer. You write different papers about the same topic all semester, so as long as you pick a topic that you like you will be able to learn how to write and be able to enjoy life at the same time. If you must take English, I would highly recommend this teacher
This professor is excellent. She was at once rigorous and helpful. She made expectations for each assignment clear, and she provided helpful feedback on drafts.
Katie is an incredible teacher. She makes learning fun, and works hard at trying to make her lessons entertaining. She is also extremely hot to the point that it is a bit of a distraction.
She was really nice and helpful. Whenever you needed help, she was there to help. I think that I am a better writer because I took her class.
Yes. Beautiful. Inside and out. You should definitely take classes from this teacher.
Could not have a better teacher if you had too! I would highly recommend her.
Kati is a fabulous professor. Her Creative Nonfiction class is fun and interesting. I learned so much from Kati and her class. The work is relevant and useful. She is funny and very personable. I love Kati!
She is supernice and helpful, but extremely tough. I put a lot of work into papers, nothing seems to please her. If you are a good writer, take her class. Teaching style - ppt presentations, lots of theory without practical examples. Discussions points help those, who doesn't write, but have a big mouth. Overall: great teacher for humanities majors
After taking this class I have gotten papers I turned into other classes back with A+ on them. You will learn how to develop argument, revise your work, and how to make your work look professional (always useful and applicable in the "real world"). You wont find a better, more helpful, teacher. *****FIVE STARS*****
Unorganized, scattered, and poor communication. Class almost walk out on her. Her assignments are very elaborate and detailed, but unclear when given. Very hard to get an "A or B". There are better teachers at SLCC to take English without hidden agenda's. Disappointed with her class.
You have to turn assignments in and come to class to do well in her class. 4 students in the class tried to cause problems with a group project. They tried to "walk out" on it because they didn't want to do the work. Her "hidden agenda" is all over her syllabus and she tells you about it on the first day. Her class was hard but worth it.
Her name is spelled KATI. I had her for fiction. She is quirky, and makes you try weird and usually cool tricks with your writing. You should attend class because sometimes we wrote whole stories or parts of stories in class. If you miss, you miss your chance to write a story.
Kati is one of the most confusing communicators I have ever had. She words things in complicated ways instead of just shooting it to you straight. If you need help, all you have to do is ask. She is willing to help in anyway but you have to ask! The work was hard but I'm happy with the final product. We'll see about the grade...
Kati allowed us to try interesting things in our writing. Sometimes she made us do unusual things for a required writing class, but most of them were fun and helpful. She helped me a lot.
Kati is an amazing teacher. She requires a lot of work. If you keep up with it, it is easy and she will respect you for it. All of your hard work is worth it in the end. If you want to become a better writer, take composition from her.
Kati is the best English teacher I've ever had! She is so awesome. If you need help on any assignment just email her, she even gives out her phone number or will meet with you for extra help. There is a medium amount of work for this class but you come out a better writer without a doubt. Not hard to get an A in her class if you do the assignments!
Kati is a very laid back professor. She gives out her number and is usually quick to respond to e-mails. She grades based on your progression. There is discussions and a few papers. Awesome class, but quite a bit of work.
This class wasn't what I expected from a intro humanities class. She expected way too much from this class. If you wanted to get a A on this class expect to spend more than 10 hours a week on writing papers and not including the extra projects. Also she was always being on grading and half way through the semester would add more assingments.
This has been the toughest class that I have taken so far, but I learned so much. I am a very mediocre writer but I was still able to pull an A. Keep on top of things and it will be worth it.
I honestly can't think of another teacher that I have had that has worked so hard to help us learn in this class. Critical theory isn't the easiest of classes but if you do the readings and the work you will do well in this class. This is one of those classes that you will get out of it what you put into it.
This class was WAY too much work for a humanities class. In talking to others who have taken this from a different teacher Kati expected far too much. Plus she's a harsh grader. Nothing was ever good enough yet the clarity of what she wanted was unclear. She expects you to figure it out yourself and docs points for not understanding
Actually, Kati is a fair grader. And the class was a lot of work. Worth it though. She is pretty clear in her grading. You will do well if you can explain your points and "back them up with evidence." You also have to attend class if you expect to know what she expects.
I thought there was way much too much work required for a three credit hour course. The content of the class was interesting and challenging in a good way, but the workload is just unrealistic. I highly recommend taking this course from another professor especially if you are just taking it to meet your gen ed requirement.
Expect to do 6 hours a week in homework/studying. Kati is an awesome teacher and will help clarify anything you need help with. She expects you to look deeper than the texts being studied, critical thinking. She gave me a lot of feedback and challenged my perspectives. A very rewarding class and experience.
Great class! Fun, challenging. You'll read and write a lot. You'll learn much about yourself and your writing.
Kati as mentioned assigns a lot of work, and at times it can be overwhelming. Although, I think she has the best intentions in mind. The class was fun and engaging and we had some great lectures and discussions. We did not use the books for the class often enough to be purchased. I think Kati could've taken it easier towards the end of the semester
Kati expects work out of you, but she has an amazing ability to teach and explain subject matter compared to other teachers i've taken this class with. She will help you develop yourself as a writer wherever you start the class as.
Kati will definitely stretch your skills as a writer, if thats not what you want and want an easy way out don't take this class. She will make you think critically, even if its about zombies. Its definitely a fun class, expect reading, work, participation, and group work. She really cares about her students and will help you when needed.
If you don't like group work I do not suggest this class. You will be working in groups every single day. There is a lot of homework in this class. I found myself stressing about the work and due dates in this class over my other classes and I am not an English major. You will gain skills as a writer and will be doing tons of research.
Kati is the best writing teacher I have ever had She gives out a lot of work but if you do it before it's due, you should have no problem; besides, it's mostly reading assignments. There were times where I felt like giving up, but she is very willing to help and set up appointments to meet with you. Work hard on the final, she may boost your grade
As long as you participate in class Kati is fun and her classes are very interesting. She likes it most when her class goes on tangents, and when they actually discuss topics rather than just sit around. Her class was one class i never wanted to miss, because it was always exciting and she was always there to help if you needed.
Katie is an amazing teacher but she makes you work for it. Participation make the class a lot easier. This class improved my writing immensely. There were times when I needed help and she was happy to meet with me. I enjoyed her English 2010 class, it was one of my favorites. Be ready to work hard, write a lot, and become a better writer.
Kati took me on as her student even though I wasn't technically one of her independent study students. She really went out of her way to mentor me on my writing on her own time. I really valued her input and contribution to my writing. Great professor. One of the best!
Kati is a great teacher who works with you and genuinely wants you to pass. There's nothing bad I have to say about her class, except maybe that she makes you work hard for the grade.
Awesome class! It may seem hard at first, but if you stick with it you will not regret it! Kati is very helpful and her lectures are fun. Don't get behind in reading because everything you read will only help you. It's not your typical textbook reads either. Super fun class. You'll improve greatly in writing if you work hard. Take the class.
This was a great class! I learned a ton and she was very fair with her grading. Her feedback was thorough and helpful. She responds quickly. The homework was interesting and used articles, multi-media and video instead of just text. If you do the homework, turn in assignments on time and work on the group project final you'll get a good grade.
Mrs. Lewis is an outstanding professor. She does assign a lot of work, reading assignments, and papers. However, she cares for her students and is easy to approach/talk to. She encourages class discussions, where everyone gets a chance to speak and share their thoughts. Do the work, participate, and you'll enjoy her class.
Kati is AMAZING!! I have never learned so much in one class before. She is knowledgeable & caring. You really have to work for a good grade, BUT you know that you've earned it. Her feedback is vital. Class was interesting and the discussions were invigorating. I'm so glad I took this class & will be taking Engl 2700 from her next semester, too.
Kati is a great professor! Her class is very structured and its very easy to do well if you finish your homework. She gives good feedback on papers and will work with students who need extra help. Don't be afraid to ask questions because she'll gladly respond! Highly recommend taking her english class
There are buckets of readings and assignments every single day. If you don't have money and have to work then this class is too time consuming. There are assignments and service learning that are given to be done outside of class time and outside of the homework.
Textbook example of a professor who thinks her class is the only thing you do in your life. A three credit class which homework goes above and beyond a four credit class. Fifteen hours of service, major writing assignments that are worth minimal points, and stacks upon stacks of other assignments.
If you respect her by doing what you are supposed to, you will get a lot out of this class. She has a solid English 2010 curriculum with outcomes that she teaches towards. Every time I had a question she answered promptly, and I felt that the whole course was very clear and easy. There is a lot of writing, but that is standard for an English class.
She is a really good teacher, and loves to give feedback and help out. I learned a lot from this class. I would take it again from her. The only thing I didn't like was the end of the semester group project, and she is a really tough grader on the assignments. I took her advice on my papers, and changed them the way she said and still scored bad.
I have taken two classes from Kati and have learned more from her than any other professor. Not only does she genuinely care about her students, but she is willing to help them succeed on her own time. Best professor I've had, and am enrolled in a third class! She does make you do quite a bit of reading, but the readings are essential and worth it!
Kati is a brilliant professor who leads encouraging group discussions that allow for a positive, memorable learning experience. Her assignments will challenge you as a writer, and how to think critically about theory. Don't let that discourage you, however. She is flexible and ready to help each individual that takes the initiative to ask for help.
I have taken several classes from Kati and enjoyed them all. She does make you work for your grade but it is definitely possible to do well. I did not enjoy her focus on group projects so much, and sometimes the assignments she gave felt like busy work. But for the most part I have nothing but good things to say about her.
This class took more time from my schedule than Calc 1 and Gen Chem 2, which I also took that same semester. The amount of work was ludicrous for a 3 credit class! Take English 2100 if at all possible for your major. Those folks are much more reasonable.
I could go on about how much I LOVED having Kati for a professor. She is a great balance of caring and tough. You will do homework in this class, but if you put the work in you will walk away a better writer and student. She makes you think critically. Always available to answer questions 24/7 and genuinely cares about you and your grade.
I enjoyed Kati's class. She really cares about her students and the work and she is always willing to help and provide the best information and examples. By taking her class, I have gain a lot of knowledge, think critically and outside of the box. She does group assignments and group workshop which is pretty fun. I highly recommend taking her class
If you like to waste your time and are hungry to use eportfolio- this is the class for you. Seemed very willing to help, but I prefer classes that don't take the extra time out of my schedule to figure out a basic writing assignment. Group projects, required "lab sessions" in middle of day, and over all organization was extremely inconvenient.
I was going to write my own rating but I feel the need to respond to the one that ranted about "lab sessions." The lab sessions were to get feedback on rough drafts and they were extremely helpful and held at various times throughout the day, including on the weekends. Kati was always there to help and to cheer you on.
I took Katie Lewis's class three semesters ago and learned more from her than any other teacher at SLCC. There is a lot of required work but it is fun and informative. All my essays for other classes are now easier because I know how to use words to make my sentences stand out. Her class helped me do better in my other classes.
She is a very helpful instructor, although her class class was with lots of busywork. However I would not recommend her class, if you are not an English major. I needed to spend too much time on a three-credit course for general education.
I would highly recommend her class. She gives good feedback, challenges you to think about the bigger picture and clearly communicates everything you need to know for the assignments. There is a fair amount of work, so if you want to register for a class but not actually learn anything - then don't take this class . Otherwise I recommend it!
I loved this class. It was a lot of hard work, I will say that there are multiple projects throughout the semester, but she is very willing to work with students. She is a hilarious teacher and very down to earth. I would 100% recomend her as a teacher, though do be aware that she makes you think and explore the subject.
I took this class over the summer and spent a minimum of 15 hours per week on readings alone. If she assigns homework, plan on at least 20 hours per project. It is a frustrating class because she is very vague but is a hard grader. Her readings are interesting, but prefers you to print out the readings, and then they are hardly discussed in class.
As a person, Kati is pretty amazing. She's smart as hell and can be really inspirational. You will work your ass off! The projects help you learn a lot, but homework is no joke. She expects you to be prepared and participate. I am generally able to pull all As, but this class needed so much of my attention that my other classes suffered.
This was by far the best class I've ever taken at SLCC. Kati is the MOST caring professor I've ever had. Everyone in my class LOVED her. She does make you work for your grade however, she is specific about what she wants and gives AMAZING feedback. 10/10. taking her again next semester. I learned more from her class than any other class.
Kati is AMAZING! The class is definitely a little more challenging with a lot of reading assignments however, Kati has made this class so much fun. It's not just a typical English class but she focuses everything on pop culture which makes the class even better. Kati will help you with just about anything and really is invested in each student.
I wanted to like this class and I wanted to go into the class with an open mind. However, the professor on the second day said that they would not debate or even have a discussion on certain topics that are part of the class. This is very disappointing for those who are willing to take the class and want to learn. She is not objective for this clas
She's a great professor, but her assignments are very heavy. Each homework assignment, quiz, and discussion is based off of around 10 literature pieces each that you have to read in order to be able to do the assignments. That being said, she is a very great teacher, her class is just extremely time consuming, which is what makes it difficult.
Kati is one of those amazing teachers who makes their classrooms a safe, comfortable and engaging. She is truly passionate and cares for her students and teaching the material. She also did a great job of incorporating her encyclopedic knowledge of queer studies and making it interesting and fun my one of my favorites was the monster activity.
This class was the most time consuming class I've taken in my 3 years of college. We had a discussion every week and the prompts were easily 1000 words long and our initial posts were just as long. My final paper was 23 pages long because the prompt was insanely detailed.
Kati is the most amazing teacher I have had in college. I took her ENGL 2610 class in Summer 2019 and I loved it. I cant stop thinking about all the cool things that we learned and how safe of an enviornment she made it. It was an online class but we would meet outside (optional) for discussions. I loved going to these and I learned so much.
You can learn a lot from this class. One of the most rewarding required courses I've taken. Kati is so nice and caring, if you struggle, communicate. She is very understanding. If you put in the work, you'll earn your A. Don't let the difficulty deter you, this class is so worth it.
Professor says that it's all inclusive, but if you disagree with an opinion or try to use actual science and facts you will get ostracized for it. If you are not a protected class or claim fluidity in certain classifications about yourself, you will be alone and more than likely fail. Take something else because she won't objective at all.
Kati is the only professor at SLCC who challenged me, quite honestly. I was challenged to become a better writer and a more active reader. When I asked her questions about queer theory, history, or race, she took the time to answer my questions without judgement. Her class is a judgement free learning zone for every student.
Professor Lewis has individual meetings thoroughly reviewing papers and giving feedback. It is easy to come to her class to ask questions and learn. I was also impressed when she invited a history prof to give us in depth context about our readings. I have taken 2 classes from her and every time I learn something new and come out a stronger student
I took Kati's Intro to Queer Studies class for a diversity credit. It was one of the best, most difficult classes I've ever taken. Lots of reading and writing. Kati was pretty flexible with due dates as long as you communicated with her.
I took Kati's Intro to Queer Studies class for Humanities and Diversity credits. She is so knowledgeable and cares for her subject and students! Even though there was a lot of homework like readings and discussions, she was so helpful and so so willing to help you out! Communication is key!! She understands the struggle and is so uplifting! DO IT!!
If you are taking this class be warned if you are not of a protected class you will be heavily scrutinized for just existing. Claims to be a safe space, but in reality if you have a different opinion you will feel uncomfortable. This being an honest and objective review.
ENGL1830 is a class where you're staff for the arts and literary magazine, Folio. Kati is absolutely incredible. If you have the option to take her, do it again and again. She cares so much, helps in any way possible, and makes everyone want to be better. The class was fun and interesting. I suggest it. This was her last semester leading this team.
her class was the hardest ive taken in college so far because theres so much reading and videos to watch prior to writing a lot for the weekly assignments but shes super sweet and understanding and will accommodate to you when things are rough. she checks in on you throughout the course and is flexible with late work
Instructor Lewis is a wonderful professor. She makes you work for your grade, but expands your thinking. Even though this was an English course, I learned about climate, about sociopolitical issues, and other important issues we face in the word today. I had some struggles, and I went to her, and she took time to help me get through them. 10/10!
Gives a lot of readings and assignments, but it's usually worth the work you put in.
Kati is SUPER chill. There's a lot of reading but it's worth it if you put the effort in. Homework is basically notebook pieces and reading the stuff to discuss in class. At the end of the semester, you are put in groups and told to make a website showcasing your work. She grades the website individually based on your groupmate's ratings of you.
Kati was one of the best professors I've ever had. Her class was super engaging, her lectures incredible; and while there is some reading required, it wasn't any more than other course I've taken. Plus, she's *always* willing to go to bat for you, and is available almost anytime outside of class.10/10 professor--highly recommend, would take again.
She shares excellent information and is informative of concepts. She teaches the class well but was not very understanding or accommodating when I needed help.
full of herself and puts students down
(2830!)Kati is incredible, she cares so deeply about her students. The class itself is somewhat difficult, if you are not great at analyzing literature, this class is not for you. But this class opened up a whole new outlook, and created such a safe and comfortable environment for all those within it. It's lecture heavy, but Kati very knowledgable!
ENGL 2830. If you enjoy lots of reading and writing, this class is for you. There is definitely a lot of homework, but Professor Lewis takes the time to provide a lot of detailed and constructive feedback to every assignment. She also offers a lot of opportunity to make up missed work. I absolutely loved her class and would gladly do it again!
Diverse Women Writers: Kati is the sweetest professor and I am a better person for taking her class. However, if LOTS of reading, analyzing, and writing/projects is not your forte I would not take this class. All the content is amazing, but the work is time-consuming and I spent more time on this class than my other 4 classes combined per week.
One of my favorite classes I took during my time at SLCC. Prof Lewis ruled, she introduced me to a lot of amazing concepts, welcomed all my questions, and was supportive and flexible when I needed extensions for due dates. If you are a lover of theory, or curious to get started, this class is for you! Be prepared to read, discuss, and think hard!
I find it funny some people left 1 star because “Kati isnt open minded”, no, Kati was damn clear about what she tolerated in her class! She wouldn't debate the facts because YOU felt differently. She was here for the truth to be taught, and that she did! Amazing professor who's clearly passionate about what she teaches. Lots of work, but worth it!
Kati is a knowledgeable professor, but the course workload is heavy. If you enjoy in-depth reading and analysis, this class is for you. I found Unstuck study helpful for study prep alongside the readings.
I can't recommend her enough. As an Engineering major, my brain wasn't wired to do anything with English - but she made herself accessible and was incredibly kind with late work. She's very understanding as long as you put in the effort. Be prepared to read and ask uncomfortable questions! I am taking more from her in Summer. Well worth it!
Nice teacher, but HOLY COW THE HOMEWORK. Be so so prepared. Please god please make it stop. Its like an art class, a writing class, and takes probably 8+ hours a week for homework. Also strict grading. Oof.
Really good at providing feedback about assignments. Very engaged with the class. Answers canvas emails in a timely manner. You can tell she is very knowledgeable about what she teaches.
