She is super nice! Also, she is fairly easy for the first few tests. The later ones got a little harder but still manageable! Lots of group work in class! Lots of Mastering Bio homework!
Great professor! A lot of in class group work, nothing too hard. She gives extra credit on tests, you need to show up to class to pass but its not that hard!
You never know your grade in the class. VERY unclear with grading criteria. She constantly changes what she wants from you. Asks very unclear and unfair questions and doesn't even want to answer questions for clarification. She doesn't seem to know her material. She refuses to clarify concepts that may interest you saying that it's not on exam.
Dr. Crump obviously cares about her students, tests seemed inconsistent though. If you do not show up, you will not pass. She stresses group participation and working together, it is part of a grade. Most test questions come from the powerpoints, ask her if you do not know something. She will try and help you but you definitely have to work for it.
You have to work for your grade. Show up to class, record lectures, see her during office hours. Make yourself known to her, she is willing to help you if you show initiative. Big on details and tests are hard if you do not know your stuff. Study and do practice questions. Tests are based off of what she teaches in lecture.
Dr. Crump is among the best teachers I have ever had. It is important to study daily to get a good grade in the class (like any other bio class). Dr. Crump will show her passion for teaching by stressing the importance in class participation, attendance, and using office hours. Work hard and you will pass. Greatly facilitates learning process.
She as a person is okay. But, So. Much. Busy work. The extra assignments she gave were not helpful and were super hard. She loved to break us up into groups and do long drawn out unhelpful activities (like we were in Kindergarten) She had a quiz every class. And she was really boring. I have never dreaded going to a class more.
Her tests are extremely difficult, even though I could discuss anything taught in that class. I knew how everything functioned and worked, but the tests are worded very weirdly and it makes for difficult answers. She makes it very unclear what she wants as an answer, I do not recommend taking for this reason. You may learn a lot but not do well.
If you're not ready to study, you will not do good. I found her tests super hard because I did not prepare myself enough, but they're from her powerpoints. The book helps. The hw assignments are a grade booster. Idk why people complain, they help you. I've never gotten above a C on any test and I still did okay in the class. At least I didn't fail!
Great professor, the material is difficult but most of it is on the powerpoint, it important to pay attention in lecture but as long as you put the time in to study you will do fine
Nice, engaging, and knowledgeable. I've taken her for both Genetics and Cell/ Molecular Biology over the summer. Her exams are difficult. All the material comes straight from lecture, however. If you come to class and take notes on all of her powerpoint slides, you will pass. She is straightforward and is very helpful in office hours.
Completly changed her teaching style from when she first started @ Nova. Earlier posts are not representative of how she teaches now. Exams based off of lecture and are very easy IF you come to class, pay attention, and participate. Textbook not necessary if you understand the lecture. Extra credit. Best professor to take as an incoming freshman.
Dr. Crump provided me with an even more solid foundation for future upper level bio courses. There is a lot of mastering homework. To be successful in the course, it is imperative to pay attention to everything on her powerpoints and what she says. The tests and quizzes are neither difficult nor easy, rather they are fair if you put in the work.
Nice teacher and lectures are clear. Her tests are insane and extremely difficult even with studying every day for 2+ hours.
From her southern accent to her off-the-wall examples, she truly makes the class a treat. Her assignments are fair, but you need to truly understand and be able to thoroughly explain the material if you want to do well. She offers extra credit through SI sessions (highly recommend) and even allows you to omit certain questions on tests and quizzes
What is good about her is that she only tests you on things that you go over in class. I got an A without opening the textbook once. You do have to study though.. A LOT. What's bad is that I can't say that she have me a great overall biology background; she skipped several topics and over simplified things that she shouldn't have.
I wouldn't take her again. She is nice, but tests were super hard, even when studying like crazy.
Tests are insane, does not give you enough time to finish and gives the most difficult questions possible. She's not the best at explaining the information, she gives it to you in the most basic terms, no curve, even when most everyone does bad on test she says its not that bad because people still get A's, but those people just use the test bank
-VERY lecture heavy -Lectures are super important and useful -Does alot of in-class grading like participation & learning catalytics -Tests are diverse and pretty specific -She's kinda nice -Class is pretty hard -Take her if you really want to learn, she'll teach you -Its important to come to class READY to learn
Her teaching style is great but her tests were very difficult its an application base and you have to study for it like your life depended on it. I wouldn't take her again. take her at your own risk!
Dr. Crump is the best professor I have had at Nova Southeastern. I took her for Bio I and Genetics and would take her again. Her test are fair and heavily based on her lectures - do not need book. Come to class ready and prepared as she comes right on time. She also gives additional work just besides the test to help boost your grade!
Her delivery on topics are AMAZING! She breaks everything down and uses real world experiences. HOWEVER, if you do not remember everything on her powerpoints you will not pass. Also, if you miss class and she uses an example it will be on the test. Her delivery is great! Her test are almost IMPOSSIBLE!
Don't recommend this professor. There are a lot of better professors to take for Bio. Her teaching style constantly changes and her exams are pretty difficult. Willing to help outside of class but I would take someone else.
Tests are extremely difficult. Classes are mandatory, majority of the test questions are based on her lectures. Moves fast during lectures and expects you to understand information quickly. Nice woman but very tough grader.
boiiiii this is not a mcat class. her goofy southern ass is a good teacher but tests are I M P O S S I B L E. Office hours are lowkey a joke because she points out what is wrong but not how to fix it. Unless you took AP bio in high school, would NOT reccommend. Tests are insane
Professor Crump is a good professor, however her class is extremely difficult. She is very knowledgeable in her field and provides amazing information, but when it comes to her tests, they are application based and much harder than other classes. Almost half of the people in my class dropped.
Amazing teacher, don't get me wrong, but a very tough grader. Asking questions on exams that was never gone over in class or was only touched on for a few minutes when much bigger topics seemed more important. Even after studying for hours, I'd still do terrible. If you plan on devoting your life to studying for Bio 1 then I'd take this class.
While Dr. Crump's class is not an easy A... she does care a lot about her student's success. Despite her tests level of difficulty, she has the best interest for her students. I feel that taking Prof. Crump in my first semester of college has prepared me for my future.
Crump is great at teaching. It's not even her exams that are horribly difficult. She decides to remove points from problems if you don't include every single thing she wants you to add (which is an awful lot). The online quizzes are bad (can't go back to check answers). Half of the class failed and dropped the course FYI. I'm not overexaggerating.
Don't take her class. Half the class ends up dropping by the end of the semester because they're failing and the "extra credit" will bring up your grade a maximum of 2 percent. I took AP biology in high school and got a 5 on the AP test and took her class a semester later and struggled to get a B. Save your GPA and pick a different professor.
Dr. Crump is a very good professor and knowledgeable in her field. She is very approachable and is more than happy to help you succeed. However, she goes through her lectures very quickly and has incredibly difficult tests. You have to take very specific notes. You absolutely have to study HARD to pass the class. All homework is extra credit.
Dr. Crump's class was a lot of fun, in my opinion. She can explain hard topics of genetics and biochemistry in a way pretty easy to remember, which shows that she knows her stuff. She isn't a PowerPoint-only professor, she will tailor to kinetic and visual learner with her drawings and interactive activities. She tell you what she wants you to know
Dr. Crump is nice but she is so harsh when it comes to grading. The exams themselves are difficult as well. The extra credits barely did anything for my grade. She also makes you take quizzes online in which you cannot go back and check your answers before submitting (also very little time to complete it!). Please don't take her for your GPA's sake
Ridiculous amounts of homework, really hard tests, and mandatory attendance. She's not a terrible teacher but she makes her classes extremely difficult. It would probably be in your best interest to pick a different professor because most people don't succeed. She is also unforgiving and doesn't have any sympathy towards her students.
This is the hardest teacher I have ever taken. Her tests come straight from the hardest questions on the AP biology exams (I used them to study). Her quizzes are even harder. She knows that the majority of students are failing but is unhelpful in her office hours. There are too many reasons not to take this class, DONT DO IT,wait another semester
I love her class so far! It's been a week, but she teaches the information in class and has us interact with each other and in class so we really understand it. Has powerpoints, homework, & test dates on canvas. Dr. Crump made sure we knew to only study certain parts of the chapter, so we can study whats on the test. She's also really nice.
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE KATIE CRUMP. I had an F in the class before i dropped it because the only grades you'll get are 4 big tests plus a final exam. Her tests are NOTHING like her lectures. Sure she can teach but then once you get the tests you're like "where did this come from??" Terrible experience. Take any other teacher!!
She gives great lecture and has great knowledge in Biology. She only grades you on 4 tests and a final and the extra credit will only raise your grade 1-2% which may be hard if you do bad in just 1 test. If you don't study ALOT you won't pass the tests. But she prepares you well for them and gives tips on how to study. SI helped a lot too.
shes a great person and loves genetics! she gives 4 test and gives extra credit for doing the hw which i recommend doing, also gives extra credit for going to science lectures. test are hard but if you study at least a week in advance youll do fine. tests are based off powerpoints , khan academy videos help if you dont understand something also
Dr. Crump is a great professor, and she knows what she's talking about. She clears up any confusion and answers any questions and is also a really nice professor. However, the only problem w/ her class is her difficult exams. She designs such complicated and elaborate tests, so you have to be careful. I would advise not taking her.
Grade is weighted by only 4 tests with extra credit added onto your overall grade at the end. Lecture is mandatory if you want to pass the class and the tests contain trick questions so studying needs to be done far in advance. I am not the best in biology and study for my grade, but would not recommend.
A really great professor, taught the class very well especially with the COVID circumstances. Made the course interesting to learn and used visuals to teach. Tests were challenging, but in a good way. My favorite part about Dr. Crump, was that her tests were not solely multiple choice, she would include T or F, essay, and short response.
Worst class I have ever taken and worst professor I have ever had. This was an intro class and my first semester of college as a GEN ED class. I studied for 6 hours a day, studied in groups, went to her office hours, did very well in labs and was still failing. Her exams are impossible and enjoys making the class difficult for students. Never again
Class is based off of 4 exams which are extremely hard. She's rude when talking to students. Could care less if you fail. 5 extra credits barely worth 1% of final grade. Tells you to memorize her 60 slide PPTs, exams are way too hard for an into class. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
I'll admit, I felt uneasy prior to taking Dr. Crump due to the reviews. I think it's important to realize that most reviews will be very polarized based on students' expectations and performance. Given this, I will say that Dr. Crump's class is not one that everyone will breeze through. It does require effort, but it is definitely worth it.
Dr. Crump was an amazing professor for Biology 1. If you really want to learn the information, take her class. You do have to work hard, but because it is a BIOLOGY 1 class. She explains everything that you need to know. She offers extra credit throughout the semester and is very organized with her office hours. Gave me a great foundation of bio.
Dr. Crump is not by any means an "easy" professor. But honestly, it is an upper level BIOL course and you HAVE TO put in the work. Her exams are do-able IF AND ONLY IF you study accordingly and pay attention in class--there is no "winging" it. On the bright side, she is very knowledgeable and explains everything really well. She's also super nice!!
I learned a lot from Dr. Crump's class and you can tell she's really passionate about teaching! Although her tests are challenging, if you study for her class the way she tells you to, you will do just fine!
If you're taking this course online with her, you'll have to teach yourself and do a lot of research online. This class is basically researching about topics and writing short essays and a couple of quizzes. It's very straightforward and easy, she's helpful but for the most part, just do ur research, it's very simple researching.
Memorize her lectures or you won't pass the tests. The textbook isn't needed but she heavily relies on Pearson. She's too rough on freshmen but would be great as an upper classmen teacher. Attendance isn't required but is suggested. Only plus side is she offers extra credit fairly often that'll increase your grade 5-10%.
forget it! DON'T DO IT TO YOURSELF!, great personality and great lecture but the tests trust me its different from what she taught in class.
I've had Dr. Crump for 2 other classes and shes been great for every single class. As long as you ask questions then she will explain a topic further. Her tests are exclusively on the powerpoints and the articles she assigned you to read. She is not an easy A but you can get an A with some work. Shes been one of my favorite professors at Nova.
horrible. do not do it to yourself. Rude, clearly does not teach for the reason of seeing students succeed. If you want to obtain a good grade in this course choose anyone else but this professor.
Dr. Crump is a nice and kind to all that PARTICIPATE in class. ALL the answers to the test can be found in her lectures/powerpoints and articles. Pay attention in class since lectures are interactive and not just straight information. The only stressful part is the Pearson HW (she gives quite a bit) and lab work if you procrastinate last minute.
She is incredible! I love how she teaches and biology is a fairly difficult subject, but the way she explains things makes it seem so much easier. She is very considerate and approachable. I would take any class she teaches cause she is amazing!
She Grades harsh with little explanation, I learned more by reading the textbook than her actual lectures, only has 4 tests graded out of 100 that barely reflect on the lectures, gives out way too much homework that takes nearly 2+ hours to complete, If you ever are forced to take her you're better off dropping the class, She's nice but bad teacher
I have never met a worse professor and overall adult in a position of authority ever. The only way she would explain something or answer questions was over zoom. NOT EMAIL. I asked her a question the day after I HAD 4 WISDOM TEETH REMOVED. I explained i COULNT TALK so zoom wouldnt be ideal and she still WOULD NOT just email me a simple response.
teacher SUCKS. you miss ONE class and youre suddenly behind 4 chapters. tests are ridiculously hard for no reason. even if you study all night for a full week, youre at least guaranteed a D on a test. I dont recommend her at all if the last time you had a bio class was middle school. You had to take AP bio before her class to even KINDA get it.
Dr. Crump is a real gem of a professor! I cannot stress enough how kind she is. I know reading some of the other reviews she might seem a bit difficult to work with, but she is so much more than these reviews! Dr. Crump says exactly what to do for her class so you can succeed beyond! Attend SI & Office Hours. Make those study guides. PLEASE study!
Dr. Crump is a professor who prepares you for higher-level courses by giving opportunities to enhance your preparation and studying skills! Use everything she tells you to your advantage! Use her PowerPoints and in the lecture take notes on what she is saying! Do the extra credits because you will regret it if you do not!
Dr Crump is a great prof. She is hard but she prepares you for a bio major. Take notes in class. Tests come from powerpoints. Do the homework. Attend SI and office hours. Work on application problems she gives. Review exams with her. she teaches you how to make study guides. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! follow what she says and you will do good.
Her class is definitely difficult so if you are simply taking bio for the science credit I wouldnt recommend. Personally I loved her lectures and thought she was great, she gave a lot of homework but it wasnt pointless it helped a lot. If you have a super heavy semester shes probably not the best to take. If you will put in the work, youll be fine
Dr. Crump was my favorite prof and always there to help me really understand biology. She is a true gem of NSU! I am so glad she was my very first biology professor at NSU!
You will never find a more caring and dedicated prof than Dr. Crump. Clear expectations and goes above and beyond to help students succeed in class and in life! Super fair game and caring mentor! Among the best!
Dr. Crump is a really sweet person and is obviously very passionate about biology but wow are her exams difficult. Make sure to start studying weeks in advance to ensure that you understand every bit of material for the exams. Some questions also have confusing wording so be sure to ask questions and check your answers. Good luck because it's hard.
Dr Crump is a great professor. Gives lots of homework but it is good practice. If your going to be a bio major she is great to have because she Helps you learn the basics.
Dr. Crump can be seen as intense but she is clear about her expectations and clearly wants her students to truly understand the basics of biology. If you follow along with her, her class and a good grade is attainable!
Dr. Crump is an amazing bio 1 professor. It is clear she cares a lot about her students success. I highly recommend her for anyone who actually is interested in learning about biology!
Professor Crump is a good but tough professor. Her tests reflect her lectures, SO TAKE LOTS OF NOTES. She is very knowledgeable and open to answering questions. Be prepared to study a lot and spend lots of time working on HW/notes outside of class.
Do not take her if you care about your GPA. Shes very sweet and easy to understand during lecture but Ive never taken tests as hard as hers. Tests are multiple choice, 50 questions in 50 minutes, the final is 100 multiple choice question in 2 hours. Always hands out tests after the class has started so you dont even get the full 50 minutes.
Out of all the science classes I've taken, this one was by far THE WORST. Dr. Crump is a nice person but a terrible professor. The lectures are seen to be easy but the tests were ridiculously hard and did not correlate fully with the lecture. The point system was confusing and beyond unfair considering how difficult the exams were.
Dr. Crump is passionate about biology but isn't passionate about giving fair tests. The exams were way too hard considering how most of the students in class were freshman. Even if you study hard, it is still difficult to do good on her exams because the questions are worded weirdly. Don't take this class if you want to maintain your GPA!
Tests are from slides, but a lot of times slides are only pictures, so you have to have good notes for the conceptual topics that have more pictures and less words on the slides. First test is easy, but they get harder so you can't slack after the first one. Don't take this if you have other stem/ difficult courses!
Professor Crump is caring and wants to engage students, she responds quickly to emails and gives extra credit opportunities. She gives study guides but they don't help much. focus on what she says rather than what's on the slides. 4 exams not cumulative. Tests were difficult, get ready.
Dr. Crump is a good person, not a good professor. What she says during lectures is important. Her exams are difficult, and she words them to confuse you. She does not provide a study guide, rather tells you to learn a lot of information from memory and make your own. I regret taking this course and would not recommend. I have to retake due to GPA.
Never take her class! Your GPA will suffer a lot!
highly recommend not skipping lectures bc its part of ur grade and bc she teaches super well and sometimes hints to exam questions). gave xtra cred opportunities that def made letter grade differences for some students. her exams are notoriously difficult for an intro lvl bio class so be sure ur prepared. no curves. gives research opportunities.
Professor Crump was fairly decent. I think her criteria in how she graded was very clear. The tests were difficult, but she provides good extra credit that literally changed my letter grade to an A. She is extremely passionate about biology and it definitely shows in her lectures. However, be prepared to study for her exams and pay attention!
Professor Crump is an excellent professor. Those who rate her poorly did not listen to her study advice. Listen when she goes over how to study, she knows best. Cares deeply about her students. Make office hours appointments and go to them. The extra credit really helps your grade, it is a lot of work, but every bio class is. Put in the time.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR AT ANY COST! her tests are wayyy too difficult for bio 1. I studied every day and rlly tried to learn the material but the questions were worded so weirdly. 4 tests and the final is cumulative. There isn't much else in the gradebook besides the tests/hw/lab so its hard to get even an A-. pls take anyone else!!!
No idea why Crump has lo
Dr. Crump is an amazing professor. Always ready to answer any questions. labs are easy & not too long. Very strict on dress code for lab. If you're to wearing pants, you're not going to lab. Her post-lab worksheets are easy & gives you a week to complete. Exams are hard. take notes on what she says in class, you will be fine.
Do not take this class if you are a bad test taker. Lot of work outside of class is required to pass her test. Passive aggressive during lecture. First few chapters she take her time making sure you understand the material with but last few chapters seems rushed and materials on the test were talked about thoroughly.
Prof Crump will definitely prepare you for higher-level Bio classes. Challenging and Lecture heavy, but I highly recommend this course for Pre-Health or Med Majors! She goes in depth when answering questions, which helped a lot. Along with office hours, TA/Si sessions, and watching Pearson+ videos for each chapter too. Goodluck!
to understand the concept at the level she wants it required HOURS outside of class. Her test are difficult even with weeks of studying. the homework assignments don't help boost your grade as much regardless of her dropping the 4 lowest hws
I got an A in her class so trust me. The amount of work you have to put into her class is CRAZY! Prelab quizzes, readings, questions, DETAILED exams, hard lab practicals. I'd study DAYS for the tests, and then get an A so its possible tbh. If taking other hard sciences at same time get ready to sacrifice one of those for this. no extra credit lmao
Very detailed tests, need to put in a lot of work. but if u do it pays off. lab is not long, she is very sweet. 4 exams, 1 end of lab exam, 1 lab report, 1 in class presentation. she randomly takes attendance. her tests have matching, T/F, & MC but again is very detailed. I personally didnt love her teaching style but can make it work.
Even though her class is highly test-heavy, she is a great professor and knows her subject (BIOL1500) very well. I barely studied for her exams and got a C. But If you dedicate enough time after class to review the material, then the class will become easier.
Very condescending. Extremely disrespectful. Will not listen to you. Do not take her.
horrible professor. rushes thru material for no reason. literally has a SMILE on her face while saying “no” when u ask her Qs. loves talking about her “accomplishments” as if anyone cares. makes class harder bc she knows students dont take it as seriously as bio/chem. exams long/trippy ON PURPOSE. condescending during office hours, NO EXTRA CREDIT.
I LOVE HER SHE'S SO NICE AND SMART
4 exams that are 80% worth of your grade! This was literally one of the hardest classes I've ever taken here, and I was struggling so bad because the exams are so detailed and difficult. Make sure you take genetics first or else you will struggle! She's nice I guess but I would not take her again. No study guides too, so you're on your own.
I hesitated to take Dr.Crump because of her reviews, but she's turned it around from past student experiences. She explains concepts very clearly and ensures you understand the topic, and will review parts of your lab report in lab to ensure you get a good grade. Tests are based on the PPT and are simple if you memorize.Overall, a good professor!
worst mistake. other students said they hated her class, i should've listened. lectures are too hectic, she doesn't explain well, picks favorites and is unfair if you go to office hours for help. why is she still at nsu? well, not like anywhere else would take her
Unnecessarily difficult, makes the class hard because she knows it just an elective class. Unfair when you don't understand a concept. Got an A-, but spent 4 hours a day studying for her class when it wasn't supposed to be my hardest class of the semester. Breezes thru material knowing she doesn't make sense and exams are unpredictable/ very long.
Literally the worst professor i've had so far. Makes everything more difficult than it needs to be. She acts like we don't have other classes to prepare for and will make the exams unecessarily difficult. Would study for hours each day only to barely pass each tests. There are easier professors out there for Bio 1!!!
Don't be fooled by the positive reviews on here, she def writes them herself. One of the worst professors I've ever had at NSU and would not reccomend
Absolutely the worst professor I've had at this university. Huge ego about her own accomplishments, acts as if you should have the content down and memorized before you walk in and will hold grudges if you miss lecture/lab (even if you keep up with the curriculum and pace). Condescending both inside and outside of office hours. DO NOT TAKE.
Not an easy class, but very doable if you stay on top of things. Tests come straight from the slides. Go to class, review, and pay attention! Dr. Crump is clear and organized. She's super helpful in lab, gives feedback on the lab report as you work on it with her, and clearly explains expectations. Not an easy A, but fair if you put in the effort.
Prior to taking BIOL 1500 and Lab I was skeptical on the reviews. However, Professor Crump is clear about how everything is expected to be graded and turned in and if you're aware of your deadlines you'll be fine. Everything is usually due a reasonable amount of time after lecture and lab and she provides instructions. Her powerpoints are self made
this lady is the professor u take when no one else is available and ur schedule only has limited room. horrible personality, rude. condescending. the amount of work is not worth it. harsh grader. boring to listen to in lecture. why is she still teaching ? studied fully on my own to get the grade i got
Grades absent/late/present. 4 noncumulative exams from PWPTs. Prelab quizzes from TopHat reading. Not picky grading lab project. 2 EC assignments. No curves. Tests are MCQ, T/F, Matching, word bank, diagrams, 1-2 SAQ. HW, postlab wkshs, & chapter questions are completion grades. 1 easy group presentation. Lab prac= stations. Loved her lectures.
Took Dr. Crump for bio 1 Fall 2023. 4 noncumulative exams from PWPTs. Tests are MCQ, T/F, Matching, word bank, diagrams. Pearson HW is completion grades. Loved her lectures. Great in office hours. Had a bio TA as lab instructor and not her. Highly recommend!
