Very nice. No need to buy the book tests are right from lecture notes. Just attend class and you will do fine. Does not grade labs and most of the homework, just checks it off. Study guides are very helpful
She treats the standard class as if you already know everything. She doesn't curve anything. To give you a sample of her teaching, on our tests, the average score was 65% for all of her classes. Only take if you know science, want to work, and are good at testing!
Easy class considering it's a science class. She is very clear and knows what she is talking about. If u study the power points and use the book a little bit u are going to get a good grade. She is also a total babe. Smoookin!!!
I think the class was very interesting. She is a very sweet, approachable teacher. There were quizzes every week that there wasn't a test, but that helped us learn the material. She always gave reviews before the test. Some extra credit opportunities also. Just do your work and study, I got an A! :)
First of all I would like to say.....that teachers arent required to curve tests so people who says she is a bad teacher cause she doesnt curve should maybe stop being lazy and start studing. I loved her class...i used to hate learning about cells and etc. but i really enjoyed learning it from her. she can be a little hard sometimes but it pays of
Please dont take that teacher. she is very boring and does not explain anything just reads from the power point and lab book. some tests are easy but some rediculously hard, especially genetics. i asked her a question one time and she told me to find the answer in the lab book. crazy. I dont recommend her unless you love BIO130
I LOVED this class. I looked forward to going every wednesday and friday. very clear and helpful. very organized and structured. Great, great teacher.
Mrs. Hollis is a great teacher. She always explained everything very well and always had study guides for tests. She also gives ample amounts of extra credit and the labs are pretty fun. Highly recommended.
She is awesome! exams are not hard if you study. I am not a fanatic of bio but i actually enjoyed this class a lot. Gives a lot of extra credit, i definately recommend her!:)
Awesome teacher she was very approachable and always willing to help. The class is tough but I always looked forward to it and I really learned a lot.
She likes to single out students she feels are dumb and dont look like they could handle the class. I recommend people taking this course to choose a different instructor...
She curves her class harder...An A is a 92% and a B is an 84% etc...but there are many opportunities to succeed. Lectures aren't mandatory, and she basically just reads from the slides of the powerpoints which she posts on blackboard. Lab was really involved but it was interesting and fun. I would take the class with her if you can
Great teacher!!! Drops the lowest test and quiz score. Used book once, her powerpoints are great. All the tests are based on her powerpoints, and she gives study guides. Labs were really easy too. Pleanty of extra credit.
Great professor-in the beginning she lays down the law for rules but don't be scared off! Lots of points offered & lots of EC. Powerpoint lectures are clear and easily understood. You must be dedicated but a good grade is not impossible. You HAVE to be in class 15min early so plan 4 it! Lab is fun & interesting. I would choose her class again!
Katie is a great teacher who is always willing to help her students understand. She offers a lot of extra credit and her lectures are interesting and clear. Katie is down to earth and I am actually sad the class is almost over. This is a great but challenging and informative class and Katie makes it what it is.
she is helpful, but you HAVE TO study. Usually her lides were enough, but in few cases book was more important
Dr. Hollis was a very good instructor. The class was very simple because she gave all her powerpoints to students, you did not have to take notes! The powerpoints from lecture are what made up exams, the book was not even needed. I attended very few lectures and got an A. DO NOT MISS LAB! Mandatory and will lose major points. Recommend her!
Study her powerpoint slides and understand them and you will do well
If you like the subject you'll like the class. its not as much discussion about the topics as i would like but she makes everything understandable and the tests aren't too hard. show up and do the work, you'll at least get a B.
Prof Hollis is very well versed in her field, but sometimes it seems she forgets what it's like to not know any Bio. I watched a ton of youtube anims. to get through the class. Lectures speedy and fuzzy. She is down to earth and approachable, though. Tests are hard, but she is a VERY fair grader--tons of e.c. available. An A is standard if you try.
I had her summer of '09. Great teacher and fair.
Great teacher! I hated Bio going into this class, and now I at least like it okay and understand it. She is really good at explaining things in simple terms, and she is very understanding if you have any questions. If you do your work, then you'll get a good grade. She's extremely fair.
Dr. Hollis made Microbiology so fun. Challenging class but she gives you all the info to succeed, study! She's a tough cookie but really fair, she knows her stuff! Take this class you won't be disappointed. Dr. Hollis is an awesome teacher. I loved lab great experience.
Wonderful teacher, take her! I am selling my (New, no tear and highlights) Microbiology: A Human Perspective (Paperback) 6th ed. for $50; compare to the hardcover for $180 at Harper. This international edition is exactly the same format as the one here in U.S. Email me: [email protected] :)
this teacher is not helpful at all!she only likes to help the ones that know this microbio stuff, which is not fair to others!!she needs to be removes asap
This teacher does not know what is doing in class, I don't even think she has real doctor degree I mean, she never answers any questions you ask for, she might just give you the description of a term but she wouldn't explain it to you. Whatever she teaches, she use the powerpoint and read the whole thing from there. She does not care about students
She is THE worst teacher ever. she does not know how to teach nor to help students. she does not care about students passing or failing because what she does is not she use powerpoint and just read it from there and does not explain it at all. she got attitude problem also. I thankfully passed with an A but the students I know they mostly failed.
VERY BAD TEACHER, SHE DOES NOT HELP STUDENTS AT ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.
All exams are solely based on powerpoints. Exams 2 & 3 were both take home short answer & in class multiple choice (MC). The final was noncumulative, open note,& (MC). Lab exam 2 was open note. Book is only useful for take home tests and homework; do not read it. She gives about 5% total extra credit on homework & tests. HARD NURSING GRADING SCALE.
The class is hard, YOU MUST ATTEND class!!! She's very nice, helpful & tries to scare you at 1st. I only used my book towards the last month especially the final. Very interesting class.
She doesn't respond to emails, constantly forgets to update dates and/or changes them, canceled class and didn't give any notification, spells everything wrong, and even put the wrong info on her one of her Power Points. Horrible.
Ms. Hollis was terrific. Very structured and organized. I really learned a lot in this class. Did not use the book once. Her powerpoints were very detailed. The test questions followed the powerpoints. Lab attendance is necessary. She posts a lot of homework assignments and short online quizzes. It was hard to keep track of what was due when.
Please DO NOT take this teacher! She just zooms through her powerpints, and expects you to understand it in the few seconds she spends reading it off of her notes.I got an A, but I had to spend hours after class learning everything on my own.She also singled out a student to harrass, everybody wanted to hug this poor girl who did nothing wrong!
This class was great. I agree with some posts that she goes through the Powerpoints kind of fast, if you ask her to slow down she will. Also it helps to print the notes prior to class. The homework is easy and really helps your grade. She also hands out plenty of extra credit. I would take this class if you want to learn about genetics.
Mrs Hollis was fantastic! Always got back to me about questions, slows down when you need help, access to all info via BB, can easily print materials to study. Open note final was amazing! She's always friendly and does her best to make the material make sense, even if you don't like science. We covered a lot, but I really got most of it at the end
She's not a good teacher because she grades too much on accuracy and constantly picks on students and singles them out. It's not easy for her to pass you. I recommend you choose Dr. Cheng as your teacher so please save your money. The only thing she will most likely pass you on is the HW. She can lose her temper too.
Dr. Hollis runs a challenging class. Lab exams are multiple choice as are lecture exams, however, lecture exams are quite difficult (no gimme questions/answers). You will need to study throughout the term (not just the night or two before exams). Dr. Hollis is demanding but fair, and is ALWAYS willing to sit down with you outside of class time.
Dr. Hollis runs a demanding course. Lecture exams are quite challenging; lab exams not so much. You will have to work in her class; however, Dr. Hollis has plenty of office hours and is very willing & able to help her students succeed. I never hesitated asking Dr. Hollis for help and she always delivered. I plan on taking her for Micro.Recommended.
The best thing about class is that she doesn't grade homework based on accuracy but it is hard to pass you on labs because she will pick on you and single you out If you do something wrong and she will refuse to give you a grade. Doesn't allow office hours.
She passes you only on homework, makes you redo labs, bad attitude. I agree with the comment below she doesn't give office hours.
Professor is very knowledgeable and is enthusiastic about teaching. To do well in her class you need to attend all labs and do ALL homework and prelab quizzes. If you attend class and do what’s expected, an A or B is attainable. For those that say an A is not attainable, their wrong as I received an A (94.3 roughly)
she is very mean instructor. she pick on you.you have to be agressive in appereance otherwise she will let you down. she goes so fast some time she streach lecture matereal in lab and expect you to finish lab as early as possible. if you are litel slow, she will hate you. she always want to finish lab early and go .
Katie Hollis's class is demanding. You'll have to work hard. She shows favoritism to certain students (those getting A's) and tends to overlook those who are trying the best they can but still not getting an A. Be prepared to work or take another professor like I wish I did!
Katie Hollis is a terrible teacher. In her class, a 84% is considered a B because this class is graded on the nursing scale. I was at an 83.9% at the end of the semester and begged her to help me with that .1% so i could get the B but she didn't. Now i have to retake the class again. Defined not that that -itch!
You better run for your lives because she will ruin your grade. Take Cheng because she's better.
Prof. Hollis is an excellent professor. As a student in the health sciences, I believe it is admirable when professors have high expectations of their students. She is very clear when presenting the course material and available for questions when they arise.
Professor Hollis is the best instructor I've had at Harper so far. It's a tough class with a lot of materials, but she's been patient and available whenever I need help (lots of office hrs) . She gives you many opportunities to earn points through homework and extra credit, posts great exam study guides, and makes lectures available online.
Lots of reading. Lots of homework, pre lab quizez, and articles to read and summarize. If you have NEVER taken a bio class before, don't take this class. The class is taught with the emphasis that you have taken bio before attending this class. Hollis is great at labs but horrible at lecture ( she reads a powerpoint). The class is very organized.
She was very nice and willing to help at anytime. She is very understanding .
She's so understanding. She had noticed our class seemed a bit scared about our second lecture exam and decided to push back our exam 5 days!! I don't know of any other professor who would do this, but she genuinely cares about her students and their educational careers.
Dr. Hollis is awesome. Her voice can be a bit monotone at times which can make her lectures hard to listen to, but honestly if you put in the work for her class it is not difficult. She is very thorough which can be time consuming during lab time, but she does it with the intent of being helpful. If you're lazy you probably won't like her.
Great, fair instructor
I am taking her class now. Dr. Hollis is very organized with her lectures and assignments. She gives you many options to receive points in HW, extra credit, articles, and extra credit on tests. Expect to work hard. She goes through the lecture quickly, but posts detailed power points every week. Labs are a lot of fun and interesting. Super nice!
Dr. Hollis was great! I felt like I learned so much from her lectures and I truly understood what I was doing. She is very nice and welcomes company to her office hours if you need the help. She offers a lot of extra credit in and out of class which just requires a little more work which is fairly reasonable. She is very inspirational!
Professor Hollis is a great professor. There is definitely a lot of work if you take the 8-week course. I think this is a great class and you definitely learn a lot. There are documentaries to watch but they are really interesting. Also, there are extra credit opportunities that I recommend doing. Overall, take this professor if you enjoy Bio.
Hollis was cool. We had about a handful of exams. The lab exams, lab quizzes, and homework were all pretty easy. Labs weren't that bad either. I really liked how the final was optional. Also, do the extra credit because it's super easy and really helps!
One of the best teachers you can take for Bio 115. Lectures are clear and to the point. Tests are okay, study guides are provided. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Labs are mandatory, but not very difficult. People who didn't take AP Bio struggled, so the textbook helped quite a bit for the. Easy class if you keep up with lectures and homework!
She's passionate about molecular biology, but expects it to come easy to her students as well. She gives assignments that take hours to do that are only worth 5 points. A lot of work with nothing to show for it. Also kinds rude in emails! I am an A student that received my first ever C in this class.
This course while heavy on homework was helpful for her exams. Time management for tests was quite hard but is doable. She offers extra credit DO IT!!!!! DO all the homework no matter how time consuming it is, the homework is worth more than the exam so keep that in mind.
Hollis is a great professor. Her lectures are easy to follow and helpful in learning the material. She explains the labs before you do them and if you don't understand something, she'll help you out. She also gives A LOT of extra credit opportunities. This class is an easy A as long as you show up to class, do the labs, and do all the homework.
She's great. Clear lectures(tests are based off them) + EC for tests. Easy to engage personality. Encourages questions. Bought the book, it helped especially for the final. Made lab actually fun. Has office hours outside class. Lab portion is mandatory, while lecture isn't. I enjoyed microbio more than i thought i would because of her.
Oh my god. She is awful. Do not take her class!! If you are taking this class because you need it for a requirement dont, there are plenty of other better teachers who can. She is smart about biology but can not teach it. She is also extremely rude and called people out in class for getting the answer wrong and made them feel bad aboutthemselves
Professor Hollis is an incredible woman! Her lecture attendance isn't mandatory however you have to turn in physical hw during that time. If you do the homework and attend lectures you'll do great. Weekly lab attendance is MANDATORY. Pre and Post lab quizzes, but they are super simple and open "textbook" quizzes. She also offers a lot of EC!
Not an Easy A. Tests are hard. Lab is mandatory and lots of homework. You have to spend at least 10 hours a week to get an A. She is also super strict. I would rather take another teacher than her.
I was in her class last semester & let me tell you it is not an easy class if you choose not to try your best. Stay after class, ask questions, do your homework, & you will succeed in the class. Mrs. Hollis is my favorite professor at Harper and I would definitely recommend taking her because of her passion for her students and the subject itself.
Dr. Katie Hollis is a great teacher! She communicated all of her course information and feedback in an enthusiastic manner that illustrated her passion for biology... and that enthusiasm was infectious! It is very clear that she takes great pride in her teaching by how organized and straight forward all of her course material was presented.
Professor Hollis is very straight forward. Follows the syllabus directly. I took the online course and work was easy to manage. Maybe about 3-6 hours need to be spent to finish a weeks worth of work. Lectures are long and labs are a lot but it is expected for a Biology class let alone an online one. Just stick to the syllabus dates and you'll pass.
Biology isnt my strong suit but Holliss class was really straight forward. About two hw assignments a week but your grade weighs heavily on the tests. Dont buy the textbook we never once used it. Before each test if you go through that units power point from start to finish and take notes youll do fine.
She was awesome. Micro is so hard but she made it easy and explained things very well. Her lectures are long but everything on the exams and quizzes is in the lectures so just make sure to take notes and study. The labs were really easy and straightforward. She's awesome, I 100% recommend her.
I took BIO 101 8-week course so it was very intense. She was clear, told a few times she's open to discussing our worries outside class time and she was nice in general. The homework and tests were from the stuff she taught so there were no surprises. There's a lot to do though...
She is the best! Her lectures are easy to follow along, and all the material in the lectures and power points are on the exams and homework. You don't need to buy the textbook. she gives out a lot of easy extra credit assignments that help ur grade by a lot. She's very caring and you can just tell that she loves teaching.
Very passionate about biology. But very disorganized. Canceled office hours a handful of times the week of a exam and even day of a lab practical. Messed up grades several times and due dates. Got mad once only a handful of students were answering her questions so she punished everyone by making her open book pre quizzes into closed book
There are three to four homework tasks every week, and they are taken directly from the PowerPoint she created. Do not purchase the book because we did not use it. Everything in the exams came from PowerPoint as well. She also gave extra credit assignments! Katie is the perfect choice for an easy A.
I'm a freshman right now so I don't necessarily have experience with other professors yet, but she's definitely my favorite so far. I have a medical condition and she's extremely accommodating and caring. It's not an easy class but if you do the work it's not impossible to get an A. Just take notes on lectures, read the text, do homework. Easy.
Dr. Hollis never responded to my emails and was a very harsh grader. I even asked to speak with her through email regarding a family emergency and completely ignored my emails. No compassion whatsoever.
Tests are hard. Too much homework. Lectures are unclear.
You have to spend at least 10 hours a week to get a decent grade on the exams. Super strict about grading.
Professor Hollis is by far my favorite here at harper. I'm only a freshman and this is my second semester and she is the best from what I've had. Very understanding for any reason, you just have to go talk to her. Kind and caring professor. I STRONGLY advise everyone to take her class if you're looking to take microbiology! Thank you Ms.Hollis
This class is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, Bio115 is a nightmare if you have any life outside of this class. At least 10 hours on top of what you do in lecture. It's very Clear Dr.Hollis has a passion for biology and science but expects all of her students to have the same enthusiasm. Lab is kinda easy but the homework is just insane
Idk where to start with Prof. Hollis. Unless u wanna slave away 15 hours a week studying for her class don't take this class. One of the toughest graders I've ever seen and will not give you any wiggle room. She barely covers anything in lectures and her labs are super long and doesn't explain anything well.
I took this class in the fall of 2023, It definitely does not look too bad at first, but it is lots of homework and reading to do but it was manageable if you cheat. Attendance IS mandatory and if you don't show up you could fail the class. Labs were okay, most of the work was done on your end, she wants a class that knows their stuff to.
This class is not for the weak and the instructor doesn't make things any better. Unless you want to spend 2 hours and a half sitting through a lecture that contains a PowerPoint which she goes over in 2x speed and ONLY reading off of it, you will NOT properly learn. Third week of class, more than half of her students dropped it... I wonder why.
Class is difficult at first but I think the professor was very caring and the tests are just like her homework and review guides. She gives weekly pre lab and post lab quizzes. There were 2 lab exams (online) and 4 exams and one was open note. You definitely have to put in the work but the labs were easy to follow and she gives extra credit!
Prof Hollis was a very easy professor to work under! I took this course Spring 2024 and all of the assignments and tests were very straight forward. She is super passionate and that is very obvious throughout the course. I wish she were a little bit faster at grading, but I know it can be hard with so many classes. Would take again!
Honestly one of my favorite professors at Harper. You can tell she cares and knows a lot about the topic and has been teaching for a while, so her lectures and explanations are perfectly curated for new students. She's super clear about her expectations, which is clutch for exams. If you are willing to put in the work you'll get an A no doubt.
She's really kind and makes the class a little easier. Only thing is she goes through a lot in lectures so if you miss one you miss out on a lot of content. She makes it clear what's on the exams and provides extra credit questions on them. Homework can be long. Labs were fine, they're easy & you don't get tested on them.
This Professor is strict. If you want an easy professor do not take this course! If any assignment is late Goodluck trying to remediate it. Do Not Take.
The class itself online isn't bad but I will say you do have to film urself taking the quizzes. As for the homework, it's not hard but a lot of work. Just make sure to do it and it's very passable with cheating. You may feel very rushed to learn everything in a quarter class. She's also very paranoid for AI so be careful.
Dr. Hollis is a great professor, explains things very clearly in lecture, you're expected to show up and pay attention and if you show interest she will help you succeed. Lecture quizzes are basically the study guides, if u put in the time to learn the stuff on it ur getting an A. Best prof oat
Accuses of Ai when I put in hours of work, and honor lock is used for quizzes nothing matches to the actual test study guides don't even help I had all As but this class was the only outlier professor is not good and very strict don't take her course.
Dr. Hollis is a great professor. She is very knowledgeable and doesn't jump into complex hypotheticals like other professors do. Each quiz has a study guide, so if you do the study guide you'll for sure do well in the class. Her negative ratings so far are due to a lack of effort on the student's side and they get upset when she doesn't accommodate
