she is so sweet. she explains things clearly and you dont have to read the book but it helps. practice problems and homework are from the book. she will make time for you if you cant go to her office hours. tests are fair and all multiple choice
Great professor! Tries to keep class interesting and is always friendly/ready to explain unclear topics. Highly recommend
Professor Schultz is always willing to help you when you need help. Great teacher, highly recommend you take her class.
She is amazing. You have to go to class in order to get the notes because her teaching style is unique. She uses a projector and writes the notes down on a pad of paper then when she fills up the paper she tears the paper off and starts a new sheet. Literally write down exactly what she has and you will do fine. Very little outside of class work
Katie is absolutely lovely. I hated Econ before I came to college but Katie explains everything in a perfectly clear way and all of her techniques make sense. If you want to take Econ 101, take her! Her tests can be difficult but manageable. Going to her office hours [or her TA's office hours] helps! Love you Katie! :*
Katie always sounds excited about the material while lecturing, and that keeps me interested. Twice in the course she hands out a one minute in-class paper worth a few points to reward you for going to class. Problem sets are not too bad and she is willing to help in office hours. Tests aren't bad if you go to class and read the book. Recommended.
Professor Schultz balances her class perfectly between easy and difficult. She has a plethora of office hours and is willing to help. Even though her lectures are sometimes dry you can tell she is trying to be engaging. She rewards you for going to class with one-min papers and also lets you research topics in econ you are into with the journals
Professor Schultz is personable. Even though her lectures are sometimes dry you can tell she is trying her best to be engaging. She is helpful during office hours. She rewards you for going to class with 1 min papers and lets you research topics in econ you're into with the journals. The class takes effort but is entirely do-able.
Take her!!! She's super nice and a very clear lecturer and writes all the notes on the projector. Homework is for completion and the tests are straightforward and multiple choice. If you copy down the notes in class, do the hw, and glance over the textbook, you'll do well.
Professor Schultz is awesome. She is super enthusiastic about her subject and is willing to help in office hours. Everything is graded on completion except the tests, which is nice, although it doesn't help you learn. Readings aren't mandatory, but they help if you're not great at econ. Getting a B is possible with minimal effort.
Professor Shultz has clear lectures and her tests are fair. It is important to go to class and do all the work. If so, you have a good chance of doing well in her class.
While going to class isn't mandatory, her notes do help when studying for the test. Her tests are only 20 multiple choice (which I hated) and usually contained one or two tricky problems on the test. While she's enthusiastic and clear enough in class, I thought the tests were rather hard seeing as it is easy to mess up on 20 question tests.
Katie's class is not extremely difficult. Attendance isn't mandatory. if you go to every class the textbook isn't necessary to buy. You can also find a PDF for the textbook online. Every question on a test is worth a percentage point of your final grade.
Katie Schultz is one of the best professors I have had. She does the notes in a very clear, easy to follow way. The homework is for completion and is very useful for the tests. She is very approachable and helpful. Take her!
She is a fabulous intro professor. SO easy. You don't even need to read the book if you take her notes. Super approachable! Take her!
The book is online and if you go to class you don't need to book. The tests are 20 questions and each question is worth a point of your final grade, which is annoying.
She is incredibly nice, sweet, and knowledgeable, as well as young. She helps you to really learn the material. The homework is relevant but not indicative of the tests, which was unfortunate because tests accounted for too much of the grade and didn't reflect what was taught in class always. Definitely a great professor though. Highly recommend!
One of my favorite professors of this semester. I took microeconomics because I wanted to take an economic class (and fulfill my GER 3) and I'm SO glad I had Prof. Schultz for this. She's crystal, crystal clear with everything and handwrites her notes in class as her method of teaching. Also impeccable style.
Frustrating because I knew the material because she taught it very well, yet the test questions were obnoxiously difficult and connected concepts that we never connected in class or in homework. The APLIA homework counts for a ridiculously small portion of your grade considering the cost of the program and the amount of time necessary to complete.
Professor Schultz is basically the best. Though the lectures had a tendency to get a bit dry (because it's econ, of course), she really made an effort to get people interested in the subject matter, whether they required it for another major or loved econ beforehand. Such a nice person, recommend as highly as I can.
She is a really good teacher, and as long as you pay attention you will understand everything perfectly well. Her tests are a lot like her practice tests on Blackboard, which you need to do if you want to do well in the exams. The lectures get a little dry sometimes though. If you don't attend class, you can always use the textbook.
Go to all the classes, lectures are clear and helpful. Use textbook to support these lectures. Very approachable, very knowledgable on Econ. Smoothly Lays Micro out from day one. Midterms are not easy, but not hard if you apply yourself. Haven't been to office hours yet but I've heard good things there. If you need to take Micro go Schultz.
I had the chance to take another time, but I took Katie's 8am because of what I read on here. So glad I did! She has such a bubbly personality, and makes micro relatable so it is bearable. The exams were not as hard as I expected, and the homework is sparse and never graded. If you are going to take Micro, you have to take it with Katie!
She's such a wonderful woman, so put-together, and sweet. She's clearly very excited about her material and knows it back-to-front. You absolutely must go to every lecture or at least have a friend take notes for you or you will be lost. Her exams are very, very hard, but she is really eager to help if you go to her. Really difficult, great teacher
She is a very nice person and genuinely wants to help everyone. However, I think her class is unreasonably difficult. The blackboard practice tests were way easier than the real tests. For some perspective, the average final grade is a C+ B- which in my opinion is way too low for an intro econ class. Not engaging enough for an 8 am lecture.
Hardest I've worked at W&M but def the most rewarding class I've taken. Lectures could get tedious, but she's very helpful in office hours. Doing the study problems for the exams is a must, and it soon becomes common sense. Doesn't post lectures Blackboard, so attendance is imperative. Really sweet and nice, and def my favorite professor at W&M!
Schultz is amazing. The first time I went to her office hours, it was halfway through the semester but she recognized me on sight and knew my name. She thought it was important for her to know everyone's face and name in even her largest class. She's clear and fair. Her homework sets up for the exams. Schultz is a fantastic professor.
Professor Schultz is an amazing microeconomics professor. She presents the material very clearly and gives you all the resources you need to do well. Make sure to do her practice tests online and go through all of your notes before exams! She is also a huge help in office hours or through email. Great professor!
You need to do the work and study. She's harder than you expect but if you study, you'll do fine. Her teaching style is not for everyone and I personally wouldn't take another class with her.
Excellent and kind teacher, but tough class. Exams and homework deal heavily with application of concepts (calculating prices and quantities demanded, etc.) Deals with these in her lectures, which are very clear. Has a textbook, but it doesn't delve into the math enough, though it does explain concepts well. Very helpful during office hours.
Professor Lopresti was great. Her lectures were super clear and easy to take notes on, but sometimes it felt as though she oversimplified some concepts. Homeworks were very hard, but the work you put into them helps with the tests! If you can understand the concepts from class and from homeworks, you'll do well.
Professor Lopresti is a generous instructor who's always willing to help during office hours. The course is very quantitative, however, so be prepared to do a great deal of math. Explanations usually make much more sense during review, but the textbook isn't very helpful. Homework and tests are challenging and require a solid grasp of the material.
I loved her for Intro micro, however this class was the worst I have ever taken at this University. I would study for hours on end for her exams and just couldn't do well. She makes her tests insanely difficult and is not accommodating when it comes to grades. Super friendly, however would never take again and would not recommend her to anyone.
Great teacher. All of these descriptions are true, always there for you in her office hours. Reading the optional textbook along with class is very helpful
Lopresti is an incredibly friendly professor with a clear love for the subject, however she is just too nice. She will constantly reaffirm that you know what to do and are prepared, when in fact you may have no clue what's going on. I have never taken harder tests in college, be prepared to study forever and still to poorly.
Lopresti is very knowledgable, intelligent, and passionate about the subject. No textbook for this class, so going to lectures and taking good notes is pivotal. Extremely difficult tests! I have never studied this hard for any other class and done so poorly. Tough grader, no extra credit opportunity. proceed with caution. This WILL NOT BE EASY!
Lopresti is okay and knows what she is doing. The focus of the class was on the math side of Micro while the tests were much more word-based. When people say the texts are hard, they mean it. I was not expecting to be clinging for a C in an intro course. Textbook is garbage. Also, she averages the word "intuitive" 30 times a class.
Lopresti is amazing! Her lectures aren't too boring and she is really clear about expectations and grading criteria. The tests aren't hard if you study for them and she is so kind and accessible. Definitely take micro with her, she is super nice and the class is an easy A!
Prof. Lopresti is so caring and willing to help you, but this is a very difficult class for an intro Econ class. A very interesting and useful class, but be ready to work for it.
Professor Lopresti is a nice person a super enthusiastic about econ, but I would be wary of taking her class just because of her testing format. 3 exams make up most of your grade, but she only puts 15 multiple choice problems on each and one short answer. Even if you understand the material, you can miss a few MC questions and your grade tanks.
Professor Lopresti is a very nice and caring professor. Always there for you during her office hours and she is really helpful. Her lectures are amazing and the two economics journals are super interesting. Go to classes, do the homework and practice tests, you can easily get an A. Strongly recommend to take this course with Professor Lopresti!
Overall the easiest class I took last semester. I almost always went to the lectures, and if you bother to, there's no need to buy the textbook (although it can help with the homework as a reference). The class moves slowly if you have much experience with math. You might say it was rather intuitive.
I personally did not do well in the class, but I respect her lectures and how she ran the class. She clearly understands the material and is good at answering questions. Even though the homework is just a completion grade, I strongly recommend you work hard on it because otherwise you won't do well on tests like me!
Very clear at conveying the material. If you go to class, you are guaranteed to do well. Although it is an intro class, the tests are very hard so you have to put in a significant amount of time studying. There are plenty of opportunities to bring up your grade through homework and short essays.
Overall, a fantastic and exceptionally clear teacher. I feel I actually LEARNED microeconomics. Her teaching style (taking notes on an overhead) is effective. She does not go super fast. With that said, her tests are difficult because they consist of 10 multiple choice and a short answer, and you don't have much room to mess up.
Professor Lopresti teaches in a clear and comprehensible way, making microeconomics relatively easy to understand. Her examples make sense of concepts that might be difficult to understand otherwise. Her weekly homework is graded just for effort but serve as good practice for exams. She provides practice tests online which are great for studying.
Prof. Lopresti has great lectures; she explains the material in a way that makes it very easy for students to grasp quickly. She's very friendly and makes herself or the TA accessible outside of class. Tests are short, so be careful when taking them.
I LOVED this course. Prof. Lopresti is phenomenal. She is always helpful during office hours, so I recommend going to them when you have questions. The TA held office hours before every exam. Her lecture style is amazing. You don't need the textbook. Maybe share one with a friend. Three midterms and a final plus a few small easy-A assignments.
Prof Lopresti's lectures are long and kind of boring. It seems like you understand the material, until you get to the test and the multiple choice questions are on a different level.
Professor Lopresti lectures in a way that you know exactly what you need to write down and exactly what you need to know for the tests (which is basically everything). I love her and the way she teaches but my only complaint is the tests. There are so few questions on them that I would get 3-4 wrong and get a B- on most of them.
Professor Lopresti is a great teacher. Her lectures are straight forward and she tells you exactly what you need to know for the class. The tests however are hard because she does not curve and there are only 14 questions, so it is not easy to get a good grade on them. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS IT HELPS A LOT (made my test grades go from 81 to 96).
Prof Lopresti has become one of my favorite professors at W&M. I was very scared to take this class but she made the material incredibly accessible and easy to understand, which is much more than can be said about most W&M professors.
I really liked Professor Lopresti. While the lectures may seem slow sometimes, it is because she will truly make sure you understand the material. Taking good notes, studying, and doing the homework will set you up for success in this class. She is also very good about helping in office hours. I would take a class with her again.
She's really the most energetic person ever. I simply don't know how she does it on a Thursday afternoon. I know a few friends who struggled a little bit but overall it's pretty easy as long as you read the textbook and follow on class. Go to her office hours if you need help (or not) she's just genuinely willing to talk to you.
Prof. Lopresti is a kind woman who clearly knows a lot about economics. In order to succeed in her class you should attend the lectures and copy down the notes as she writes them. If you need any help she's always happy to assist. Also she posts practice exams on Blackboard that are VERY helpful for her in class exams.
Take Econ with other professors.
Lopresti is pretty good. Sometimes intro econ is imply harder than you'd expect. I definitely learned how to study for econ in her class. Started out the semester thinking economics in general was simply a terrible thing to study and ended up actually enjoying it by the end of the semester.
Lopresti is my wifey and deserves the world but intermediate micro is just very hard. If you're smart, you'll do fine bc grading is honestly very lenient (lots of partial credit) and expectations are very clear. She's a gem in office hours. Just a hard class.
Professor Lopresti is FANTASTIC. Her passion for statistics and for teaching is evident in class and during office hours. She is very accessible for helping students and makes it clear that no question is too "simple" for her to help with. The first test was extremely difficult and seemed like it was designed to cause confusion, but Professor Lopre
very difficult class. hard work, but doable. always available to help during office hours.
Hands down the best professor at W&M. Very engaging lectures--I looked forward to every class. Also helpful during office hours--can be a long line, but she makes time. Unbelievably kind and deeply committed to each student's success. Even semesters after taking her 100+ person class, Prof Lopresti will still stop me to ask how I'm doing/catch up.
Unnecessarily tough grader. Really hard class. Not helpful in office hours. Had her for 101 and she was much better, but she was not good in stats. She really enjoys the class, but her students just want to get it over with for sure. Only take if you absolutely have to.
Prof. Lopresti is one of the most influential people I've had the privilege of interacting with. She cares SO much about her students and pours her all into classes. I look forward to class every day, and she makes statistics seem like the most interesting thing in the world. She'll def push you hard, but she's always there to help outside class
Prof. Lopresti is the best! Make sure you go to class because all notes are handwritten under the projector. The first one or two problem sets might be challenging, but going to her office hours definitely helps! If you work hard, you will improve a lot in one semester. I love the way she teaches every single day, so caring and intellectual.
Lectures are more or less long and boring. Shes very kind, engaging, and helpful. But the lectures are hard to sit through. She also grades and makes tests unnecessarily hard and somewhat unrelated to the course content.
The worst class I have ever taken, without a doubt, has to have been Loprestis Principles of Microeconomics. She teaches to the lowest common denominator of understanding in the class, but somehow still finds a way to rush through the material. As a result, the lectures are both boring and almost entirely incomprehensible.
Lopresti is so sweet and is very accessible. However, she does not give enough practice examples and there are not enough outside resources to help understand the work. Class overall harder than I expected, but it is definitely doable if you study. Lectures can get very boring and are sometimes hard to understand.
I have attended every single class and have learned more in the 90-minute study sessions with my friends before each test. People in the class just want to get out as soon as possible. The lectures are taught to such a low level that they no longer make any sense. Also, as some of my friends have pointed out: this class is all math and no theory.
Professor Lopresti does a good job teaching with such a large class size. She is very kind and always sounds very enthusiastic about the material that she is teaching. During class, she shows you exactly what notes should be taken which is very helpful for studying. However, there are three midterm exams and they are rather difficult.
She writes notes along with the class, and I find that to be easier to follow than professors reading off slides. However, the notes are not posted online, so attendance is necessary to do well. Prof. Lopresti is very kind, easy to talk to, and really cares about helping students learn. I would recommend taking 101 with her.
Professor Lopresti seems like such a sweet, kindhearted teacher, so I feel bad leaving her with a poor rating. However, she is really not accommodating. Literally at all. Oh a family member died? Youre in the hospital? Well shell not let you take the exam a day after the class takes it, even if you have documentation.
Professor Lopresti is obviously very enthusiastic about economics, but her lectures are literally so boring. I don't mean to be rude but I wish she would just post the notes (she doesn't, so you have to go to class or get the notes from someone). She seems nice enough and somehow knew my name but I always saw multiple people asleep during lectures.
Professor Lopresti is a great professor! She is very energetic and caring, which made her class even more enjoyable. Her lectures can be confusing at times but are overall not hard to follow. As long as you put in a good amount of effort, you should be able to get a good grade in her Microeconomics class (which is what I took).
She is an extremely cheery and available professor, sometimes a little overbearing at times, but clearly understands and presents material. She cares about her students and is always willing to help. If you miss class, you won't be able to get the notes unless you ask a friend, but attendance isn't technically mandatory. Don't be late!
Prof. Lopresti teaches incredibly. Her lectures are very engaging and straightforward. Very little homework. For an introductory class, she did a really good job of explaining how the concepts in micro can be applied in other fields and how they can be further developed. If you show up to class and take good notes the exams will be a breeze.
lectures are helpful and thorough. Your grade is mainly based on exams but she drops lowest one. I had an issue with missing one due to an emergency and not being able to make it up because of this policy but it worked out in the end. If you miss the lecture you can fill in with the book which is helpful. Do the practice questions for tests !!
She's a very sweet and passionate teacher, it's just a very hard class that you'll need to put work in for. It takes a while to get used to her note-taking style (projector and writes material down by hand), you must be hyper-focused during notes or you'll miss important information. Gives good partial credit.
Professor Lopresti is amazing. Microeconomics was very challenging for me, but she was very supportive and helped me so much. Just make sure that you get all of the class notes, and practice the homework and practice questions! She never tests you on material you haven't seen before, and she gives you plenty of time to prepare for tests!
Prof Lopresti is so kind and enthusiastic. She writes the notes along with the class which helps a lot when studying. My only complaint is she was a bit condescending - I felt like a second grader when I talked to her. But shes definitely a good professor to take if you know absolutely nothing about micro coming into the class.
Lopresti is nice for the most part and gives you all the information you need to know in her lectures so definitely go to class. She drops your lowest exam score which is nice, but outside of exams there is very little room to boost your grade. If you don't do well on her exams, then it is nearly impossible to get a good grade in the class.
Prof. Lopresti really knows her stuff and explains it all very thoroughly. Her style of teaching really worked for me, and I felt very well-prepared for exams. The homework is graded on "good-faith effort" (basically completion) which is a huge plus for me. Be sure to do the optional practice problems before exams, and you'll do just fine!
Prof is extremely enthusiastic about the subject, her lectures are kind of like getting hit with a high-speed train of information. If econ comes naturally to you and you can keep up, great! If it doesn't, getting A's on exams will prove to be somewhat difficult.
Now that I've had a few weeks to sit and think about my experience last semester with Lopresti, I realize that she was actually the worst professor I had. I learned nothing in her course yet attended every lecture, did all the practice questions, and worked my butt off. Prof is unhelpful, unaccommodating, and cowers under the guise of relatability
Lazy, lazy, lazy, oh look, more lazy!
Professor Lopresti is sooooo nice! She really cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. Not an easy A, but definitely doable if you put in the effort. You have to attend class because she does not post any slides, however she hand writes all of the notes with you so she never goes through them too fast. Great professor!
Professor Lopresti is so kind but something about her teaching style just does not click with me! I go to every lecture and 75% of office hours yet I still cannot achieve an A on her tests. The tests are so random and different than the homework and the practice questions, so good luck! Butttt if you are good at econ then she may be your favorite.
Literally such a difficult class. I thought I would understand micro...I was wrong. She is very nice but I she never actually answered questions that were asked she would just say "great question we'll actually talk about that later" then literally never did. Midterms were difficult but you dropped the lowest of the 3 which was nice. I hate micro.
Professor Lopresti is a very caring professor who is willing to work with students. I found the subject very hard, but she was always happy to meet with me during office hours to clear things up. Very understanding, as well. She's very energetic and passionate about economics, too. Also, I found her exams way easier than others in the department.
The class is all math and the exams are all theory. If econ isn't your strongest subject, I really recommend utilizing outside resources to grasp the concepts since Lopresti makes them overly difficult.
Professor Lopresti was fine. If Micro is not your thing you will not do well. She would just talk and not put anything into context making her lectures hard to follow. There are only a few tests and just a couple of questions off will sink your grade. Do not buy the textbook.
Lopresti is super sweet and clearly passionate about economics. Her lectures are pretty solid, but sometimes she dumbs things down to the point where they are even more confusing. She's accessible outside of class for questions and really cares about her students. Not and easy A, but definitely possible! Do the homework over and over!
She shows a lot of enthusiasm during class, but something about her style of conveying ideas makes it hard to fully absorb and engage with what she's saying. She spends the entire class speeding through difficult topics and hardly ever takes a break to check on our progress, do example problems, etc.
Professor Lopresti is a really nice person. If you have to take Econ, then she is a good option. I thought the class would be easy, but I have definitely had to work for my grade.
Prof Lopresti is very enthusiastic during her lectures but she handwrites the notes so you have to go to class. Her tests are fair and the workload is light. Just do the practice problems she provides and you'll do well on the tests. Don't buy the textbook.
This class is incredibly difficult. If you didn't take intermediate micro the previous semester, it's gonna suck. it's based on like 4 HW assignments and 4 exams. She isn't willing to accomodate someone but u can go to her during her office hours. lectures r very slow and boring. wouldn't recommend to anyone. this class or this prof
Worked hard to pull off a B+ A lot of why I did well is that I hit the ground running prepared for it to be tough so keep that in mind. I really do feel like I understand economics very well now but just a few multiple choice wrong is a big hit to your grade. It's frustrating that way but she is a good option for econ (though not accomodating)
She's clearly passionate about her subject and tbh this is a tough class in general. Lectures are interesting and she's willing to help in class and in office hours. She encourages you if she sees you're making an effort or improving gradually. Only complain is she's not accommodating AT ALL when it comes to homework extensions etc. 0 extensions.
Lopresti is by far the BEST econ professor at W&M. She is extremely caring, accommodating for office hours, and gives lots of partial credit and feedback. She gives 5 graded hw assignments but they're very useful for exam prep. This was my fourth econ class and it's the first time a professor lectured in a way that I understood. Highly recommend!
Professor Lopresti is super nice and caring. Except her lectures are super easy compared to what is put on the homework and exams.
I'm confused about these reviews. Professor Lopresti has not been accommodating. Her classes are boring if you're not into econ, and she doesn't curve grades. This is the worst I've ever done in a class. A good thing is that she grades homework based on effort, so even if you get the answers wrong, you can get an 100. But the exams are awful.
Professor Lopresti is great for intro micro. She explains things clearly and is very knowledgable on the subject. She drops your lowest exam grade and homework is for completion so getting a good grade is perfectly doable. Solid choice for ECON 101!
One of the kindest, clearest lecturers out there. Encouraging during office hours. A hard class, but her fair grading and partial credit goes a long way. My only complaint is that the multiple choice practice she provides is inadequate. She gave us a practice HW one time, which was great. More of those would make this class even better.
Katie Lopresti is the best professor teaching Econ 101. She breaks down concepts well and is open to answering questions in or outside class. Her exams were tough. The wording was often tricky and made me lose more points than I can count. If you don't understand a concept or need to go over an exam meet with her. She is super helpful!
I am still taking her class so I can't rlly comment on all the people saying you lose a bunch of points on wording and exams. This rlly scared me and almost made me not take the class. I think the class is very doable, and do fear the ratings that say this ^. She is a really good teacher and great at explaining concepts.
The course is heavily graded on two exams plus a cumulative final exam. I went to every class, every office hour slot, and did every homework assignment and still did not do well. I put the effort into the class and got nothing out of it. The lectures were boring and she barely made reference to the textbook, it is suggested reading in actuality.
Though day one it may seem like she talks to you as if you were a child, she's so good at explaining content. There are three exams, you can drop your lowest. I got Cs on all of mine, but the homework's are graded by completion, so easy As. I ended with a B. Totally worth it.
Genuinely DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She is super passive aggressive when anyone who does not know everything about Econ asks a question. On her tests it feels like she does not want you to pass because she phrases her questions so confusingly.
Lopresti always has her students' best interests in mind. She writes her notes while she lectures in class, which makes it easy to follow along. You take 3 exams and drop the lowest score. Her exams were pretty straight-forward and similar to the practice questions she provided; however, you need to put in work if you want to do well.
Did not like her, her lectures were okay, the tests were annoying and the questions felt like they were trying to trick you. Take it with another professor if you can.
Lectures are mind numbingly boring, but that's not really her fault, micro is just a dry subject. Missing a few questions on a test can drop your grade by a couple percentage points. She focuses mostly on the math aspect, and very little on the concepts. If you're good with numbers, you'll do fine. If you hate math like me this class will be awful.
Compared to other Econ101 classes, the prof teaches more material than we need to know. Having to memorize that much material all at once for the 4 exams, gets stressful (unless majoring in Econ). In addition majority of your grade relies on exams, and the homework is completion. Lectures aren't posted online so it's recommended to go to class.
Great professor very knowledgeable about microeconomics! Tests were kinda difficult, a lot harder than the homework/practice questions which made it hard to prepare/gauge how the tests would be but it's definitely doable! Homework is a breeze
Lopresti is a fine teacher. The lectures are long and boring because she repeats herself often, but it is clear that she cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Tests are multiple-choice, and missing just a few questions will drop you too many percentage points, but overall not super hard. Homework is for completion and pretty helpful.
Cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Lectures are good, but can be repetitive and boring sometimes. Not a lot of homework, and the tests were very similar to the given practice questions.
Although Lopresti teaches somewhat effectively, she teaches at such a glacial pace that it's nearly impossible to not get bored in her class. Some of her test questions are worded so poorly that it seems as if they are trying to trick you.
Only tested on what she said in the lectures. Practice questions were very similar to test questions. Only read from the textbook if you missed a lecture. Teaches at a really slow pace and stops 2 make sure nobody in the 90 student crowd is left behind. While it's kind of boring (1.5hr classes), she doesn't skip ANY part of her logic, so super easy
It may seem like she talks to you slowly as if you're a child, but she's nice and always willing to answer questions. There was a textbook but I just attended lectures and studied my notes before the exams and I was fine. There are 3 exams (1 dropped) and a cumulative final all with confusing but doable questions. Homework was graded on completion.
I loved Prof Lopresti's lectures. She teaches in a very clear way and ensures everyone is following along. I got the textbook, but never read it. She is very understanding, but has clear guidelines on attendance. If you can't show up, you need to find the notes from someone else. She won't help you there.
If you are thinking "hey Econ is useful..it isn't for my major but it could be helpful..." Stop yourself there. Don't continue further. This class weighs heavy on two exams (take 3 and drop your lowest) and then your final and like 10% homework. I liked the lectures for this class but I was toast on the exams. The final was also cumulative..why.
Prof. Lopresti's style of teaching meshed perfectly with my preferred method of learning. She writes everything out on screen and explains as she goes. Most of your grade relies on the tests, yes, but they're honestly not that hard as long as you read the book and review the practice problems.
Professor Lopresti was very kind and wanted to make sure everyone understood the material (sometimes overly catering to the slowest learners) and is a good fit for an intro class. She knows the material but will often teach it to you like you're five years old. She has a no-technology policy so be prepared to write your notes by hand.
She is so sweet and caring and wants students to do well and teaches so that everyone understands. She encourages us to come up with our own examples in class so we learn better. hand writes note out so class moves at a good pace so you won't miss anything. Very kind and clearly loves teaching and always encourages her students to do great things
Very reasonable and friendly person and professor. One of the best lecturers in the ECON department. Tests are harder than comparable ECON classes and it is important to understand the material such that you can teach it to others, because the open response questions are hard. Highly recommend, especially for ECON majors.
I cannot say enough great things about Professor Lopresti! Her lectures are straightforward and she always gives real life examples that relate to the concepts, which is really helpful! She is always willing to explain something in-class or out of class and genuinely wants everyone to do well. Absolutely wonderful professor for an intro Econ class!
The simply fact is Professor Lopresti has a job because her husband is good at his. Unless you enjoy being condescended to for 80 straight minutes as a professor explains simple concepts like averages to a room full of students whose souls where sucked away hours ago, I would strongly suggest using your time to actually learn with anyone else.
I love Professor Lopresti! Her lectures are engaging, and she takes complicated concepts and makes them easy to understand. The exams were kind of difficult, and she doesn't give extra credit. You HAVE to work for your grade and go to class, or you'll be lost. Also, know the concepts because you can't rely on memorization to do well on the exams.
Professor Lopresti is very nice and makes her lectures easy to follow. Enviornmental Econ is pretty easy. As long as you have a grasp on basic microecon frameworks, you should be able to do well. The midterms are worth a lot of your grade, so study hard for them.
Lopresti is super nice and always incredibly encouraging. Econ is a hard subject for me overall, but her lectures and notes are clear and she walks you through every concept. You're graded based on three tests, six homeworks, two econ journals, and a final, but you get to drop your lowest test score. Definitely take into micro with her.
Professor Lopresti is very caring and clearly passionate about the class. Her lectures are great because she says everything clearly and draws diagrams for everything she says, and only quizzes you on that stuff. She is accessible at office hours and has TAs who are good. Questions on the test were harder than practice tests, which was annoying.
Lectures were boring but if you pay attention and don't skip class getting a good grade isn't too hard.
DO NOT TAKE LOPRESTI This was my least favorite class at W& M. She is a bland lecturer with tests that don't match the HW. For a theoretically applied class she didn't apply anything. She is not accessible outside of class I told her I had a health emergency the day before and she told be to do better next time.
Lectures are going to be boring. Take it earlier if you can. Class itself isn't too hard but you have to go to the lectures and stay caught up or you will screw yourself over. She provides a LOT of practice questions to do. There are three tests + a final that make up a lot of your grade but you can drop the lowest test. Isn't too bad.
You HAVE to go to class--material itself isn't too hard, but she doesn't post notes online. There are practice questions though and hw helps. Exams are reflective of hw but some conceptual application questions rely on the notes taken in class. Kinda boring, but shes's not a bad teacher. Gets the micro credit out of the way, but not super engaging.
I actually really liked Lopresti's class and thought that her lectures were pretty engaging compared to other professors I've had. She's also really nice and tries to be as helpful as possible. Would definitely recommend her. You can get by without consistently reading the textbook but just make sure to go to class.
my #1 qualm from Lopresti is she condones the worst/least productive questions and comments- she never makes someone feel wrong (which can be nice for that individual), and it gets to a point sometimes where it eats into class time, and we go over time. Class material is extremely easy and she makes it seem simple. I didn't even buy the textbook.
Professor Lopresti is engaging and makes complex concepts easy to understand. Exams are challenging, so be prepared to work hard. Definitely take this class - unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for my study prep.
As someone with no Econ background, Lopresti makes concepts easy to understand and simple. There is a textbook, but I never used it. You can't miss a lecture. They aren't posted anywhere. But I love her teaching style and how well she shuts down those questions that really only serve to make the asker feel smart.
If you want to get an A in econ, take Lopresti. Homework graded for completion, 3 quizzes (lowest dropped), 2 short journals, and a multiple choice final. Attendance not mandatory but necessary to get an A. Her lectures are VERY clear and easy to follow. Sometimes she dumbs down the material too much and some of her classes are very boring.
Professor Lopresti taught Intro Micro with lots of enthusiasm. She tends to explain concepts very simply and can sometimes overexplain, but is otherwise very clear and easy to understand. HW and midterms are graded fairly and accurately reflect book/lecture content.
More complicated than it seems and if you are not mathametically inclined or are not intending to be an econ major, I would not recommend this course. It became harder than all of my other upper 200/300s level courses and there is no final exam review or prep. On a positive note, she is engaged and answers questions enthusiastically.
I honestly have no complaints with Lopresti. There was a textbook but it was definitely required to read. I did read it and it definitely helped me to understand things I didn't understand in class. The exams are okay, there are some trick questions but you'll be okay. She has 3 exams and drops the lowest one which is nice. I definitely recommend
Seems like a decent professor but can be condescending. Not very accommodating, so keep that in mind if you take her class. Please do not take this class, or at least with Lopresti, if you are not good with math, it will bite you later on. People love her or hate her, just proceed with caution. I regret not dropping her class when I could.
Professor Lopresti's econ 101 class is probably the best for anyone unfamiliar with economics. Everything is explained well and homework is a completion grade. Review questions are super helpful in studying for each midterm and final. Would take again.
Her teaching style didn't really mesh with me very well. She teaches as if her students are babies and oversimplifies concepts to the point where they no longer make sense. The multiple choice on the exams was very difficult and felt like trick questions. She was very sweet and enthusiastic however.
Lopresti is hit or miss for a lot of people. She does have a slow pace, which some people found annoying, but I found somewhat helpful. 3 tests with the lowest grade being dropped, if you study and do the practice problems you should be fine. she is VERY inflexible for deadlines and doesn't allow any late work or re-scheduled exams for any reason.
lectures were very slow paced and concepts weren't usually explained clearly. the textbook and practice problems were helpful as well as the homework assignments being graded on effort. there's very little room for improvement as your entire grade basically relies on the two exams + the final and lopresti isn't very flexible.
She was a boring lecturer and taught as if we were babies, it was hard to gather motivation to pay attention. She wrote her notes with you as she was lecturing, which was helpful. Hated the way she answered questions; she acted like the stupidest question was the most awe inspiring question she has ever heard. You can find the textbook free online.
Prof Lopresti is an amazing Econ professor!!! She was always willing to answer questions outside of class. She gives a total of three exams and a final. Her exams are fair, only covering material that was covered in class. For each chapter, she posts practice questions which were very helpful. She is great at explaining concepts! Highly recommend!
Professor LoPresti was great. Her lectures were very clear, and she explained all the material really well. She clearly cares about the class and her students. I found the tests to be more challenging than the homework, but they are fine overall if you study and know the material. She is very kind and easily accessible outside of class.
Professor Lopresti's lecturing style is easy to follow and always leaves room for asking questions. She uses a projector and writes the notes live so you can see how the concepts progress instead of looking at slides. The course is graded on only a few assignments and tests, with the three exams making up a large amount of the final grade.
Good if this is your first econ class. Homework was participation grade, 3 midterms with one dropped, slow and clear lecturer. The only complaint was her lectures got boring. The notes weren't posted or anything so you have to go and actually listen if you want to succeed.
Prof Lopresti makes economics understandable by using examples and taking notes with her students. She is invested in your success and I definitely recommend her office hours and asking for help when concepts get difficult.
she explains things very well and the tests are a lot like the homework. she does lots of example problems in class and breaks things down into understandable terms. very peppy & energetic. she does 2 or 3 random attendance checks in the semester. going to lecture is pretty important to be able to understand things well
One of the best professors I've had. Lectures, grading, and schedule are super clear. She also clearly loves to teach. Honestly, I think people get on her because she's strict on deadlines and doesn't post notes, which I also wish she did, but as long as you actually go to lectures you shouldn't have any problem. Attendance effectively mandatory.
Prof. Lopresti did a great job clearly explaining econ concepts. She is always available at office hours and answers all questions there. The class is graded mostly by tests but she drops the lowest midterm grade. Textbook was a part of the course but I didn't read any of it. Attend lectures and study and you'll have no issue with this class!
She is very nice and good at teaching but very inaccessible and if you miss even one class you are screwed. She does not post any notes and sometimes tests seem a little bit too tricky to the point she wants you to fail. But her lectures are great.
She's super kind and available for you but the only real grade is your tests. Make sure you study to do well on them. The third test is optional if you do good on the first two so that's another bonus too. Also make sure you attend lecture because she doesn't post any notes. Overall, the class is pretty easy tho.
I LOVE LOPRESTI. she is so kind and explains very difficult concepts in an easy to understand way. she is very approachable and accessible. take her for micro if you can. only thing is the tests are really your only grades so be prepared. she does drop the lowest grade though. hw isn't too hard and is helpful
She explains concepts in a way thats is easy to understand & makes econ less daunting. Homework is basically for completion, but is helpful in understanding topics - exams make up the main portion of the grade.
Lopresti's teaching style is straightforward, and she goes slower than necessary to help everyone. Lowest test gets dropped, so if you do well on the first 2 exams, you can skip the 3rd. The FRQs are the easiest part of her exams; MCQ is more difficult but not too much. Study for the final because there's a decent amount of untested content on it.
A bit of a manic-pixie-dream professor: gives Kamala Harris vibes in the "you exist in the context" way. Always smiling and very nice and helpful. Talks a lot about Funfetti nut butter.
Lectures can seem slower paced but they are very very helpful in understanding the content. You can drop a midterm which helps boost your grade a lot. Prof. Lopresti cares a lot about her class and her students, and is a great professor!
very divisive teaching style; you either love it or hate it. sooo slow to the point that it sometimes feels patronizing, but this pace was nice on more difficult concepts near the end of the semester. pretty easy exams (as long as you study) with one exam score dropped.
Very good professor. She explains all the concepts clearly (and slowly), ensuring no one falls behind. Exams are easy enough, but her practice questions and homework help tremendously, giving you an idea of what to expect. She unfortunately doesn't upload her notes, so attendance is important.
The class content isn't recorded or posted, so I would recommend going to class. Redoing the hw and extra pqs as prep was helpful for the exams. I crammed for this class, but with actual studying, it is possible to do well in the class, especially if you go to office hours. She is a good professor, just sometimes the content dragged on a little.
Very kind professor who I thought explained concepts pretty well as someone who had never taken any prior econ classes. The later tests/final were tough imo which tripped me up (hence my B-) but I should've asked for more help so that's on me. Overall she's worth taking but if you get confused GO TO OFFICE HOURS she's very nice and will help you!
Really clear lectures and made material easy to understand with guided notes and examples. Genuinely wants her students to understand the material Taken Spring 2025
not a helpful prof, doenst help you if you dont understand material and need to be re taught things. sturggles when studnets ask questions that she doenst want to anwser. Not helpful I would avoid any class with her
She definitely tries to bring the content down to a level that anyone and everyone can understand, which is great because I understand it all, but my lord do her classes get boring sometimes. I had to bring coffee to avoid falling asleep. Very easy course, very accessible if you have a problem, well spoken, good professor, just a slow class.
~from Spring 2025~ It genuinely felt like Lopresti enjoys teaching! She got through a lot of material while keeping it interesting (a feat during 80 minute classes). Her exams were tough, but completely fair. While attendance isn't strictly mandatory, she does not post her notes.
Honestly not my favorite class and I am struggling a little bit, but only because I should be studying more. Lopresti gives great lectures and clear notes. Also, lots of study materials and extra resources to prepare for the three exams. She even drops the lowest exam grade at the end of the semester. Highly recommend.
She has over 200 students total, and over 100 in each class and the fact she is on a strict schedule, It's very difficult to ask in depth questions during class and there WILL be a line during office hours. Despite this, she knows the info is dry and tries to make it entertaining. 3 Tests, lowest score dropped, plus a final. Her tests are hard.
Very little help, test made no sense after days of studying. The information taught in class is like a 1 or 2 to understand but then her test are like a 8 or 9. went to office hours and had little to no help, basically being told that i need to take better notes. Very nice person but the class is not fun if you have never taken micro before hand.
only have 3 exams which total 85% of final grade, lecturer's are hard to understand and not strait foward. Her teaching style if very confusing, I would avoid at all costs
I don't really like Lopresti, but she conveys the information clearly. Classes are boring but you need to go because she doesn't post the lectures anywhere.
She was okay, tbh I didn't work to hard in this class, you can get by without reading the textbook. Her lectures are straight forward but I wish I could put her on 2x speed sometimes. The exams can be a little confusing, I always walked out thinking I did better than I actually did. She doesn't really provide feeback on exams either. But not bad!
She was nice, but in my opinion her lectures weren't really structured and ultimately made it decently hard at first. I started the semester getting decently mediocre grades and it took me awhile to figure out what worked and what didn't.
very sweet person however the class itself was pretty difficult due to the teaching style (and also not posting lectures or slides) and that most of your grade is based on tests. she is accessible in office hours, just did not find her to be helpful in them
Condescending and doesn't seem to understand or be helpful if you're struggling. Tests did not reflect the level of difficulty in lectures/homework. Worst part is she provides no access to lectures/notes, or any resources on blackboard. For students who have a hard time keeping up in lectures or don't take amazing notes, you basically have no help.
Best to go to class because lectures or notes aren't posted. She makes econ pretty understandable for someone's who never taken it. If you're struggling it's best to be proactive asap instead of letting it build up. Don't be afraid to ask for clarification until you fully understand the topic; she is very kind and approachable
Nice professor, lectures move very slowly, almost feels like she is explaining the content to a 5th grader. Tests feel way more difficult than material learned in class, grade heavily dependent on the MCQ portion of exams. Always available in office hours and responds to e-mails quickly. Attendance not mandatory, but does not post lectures online.
I do not like Professor Lopresti. She is condescending and not a good lecturer. The class is a werid combination of ridculously easy and so annoyingly tricky. So irritating.
