wow, doesnt explain anything
She's not that bad at teaching, but her laugh makes you freak out and forget everything you learn. Also her tests are nothing like the homework or the lectures. Prepare for the world of annoying pain.
One of the best profs I have ever taken. Nice, funny, really knows what she's talking about, lots of examples, gets through the material quickly but perfectly clearly, tests are fine - every prof who teaches the course at the same time uses the same test. I would take her for more classes.
always has a great attitude & is willing to help. gives lots of examples in class & reviews for tests the day before. lots of time consuming homework tho
Took for multiple math courses. Laugh & jokes are math-geektastic, you've been warned. Teaching style: presents matter in multiple methods for different learning styles Do homework, go to every class. Tests combine homework and concepts in new ways-difficult! But she's always available to help.
I would recommend her. I am taking her again. She is organized, I like that.
She's so nice and makes math really easy to get. I like her a lot.
She made lectures interesting and likes to crack corny math jokes, she's a nice women and does cover material well but writes down examples too fast and isn't always clear. Helpful when you see her during office hours though
This lady is kind of crazy, but she makes a good math teacher. After 2 weeks she got under my skin, but I learned a lot from her, and she was available for extra help, clear lecturer, good lecture pace and clear on what she wants from students. A good teacher.
shes a really loud talker, but she keeps you awake
instead of teaching and explaining all she did was show examples with out telling you what or how she did it
Lectures move very fast. Tons of homework. All okay, until exam day. Her exams are way out of line, choosing hard problems at the extreme periphery of math-beginners understanding. I don't think she understands what her students can and can't extrapolate from basic class examples. find a better prof for this prerequisite class1
lectures move very fast and are really just the examples from the book so you have no where else to get examples from. great for extra help and a really nice person but i would not take her again she has a 125 skills test unlike many other profs so be careful
Her lectures move so fast it's really easy to get lost.
In my 5 years of university this was the WORST professor that I have ever had. She is arguementitive when students ask questions, which is often because she doesn't actually explain the material, she just makes bad "jokes" only she laughs at. Luckily there are plenty of other faculty teaching this class at WWU. I HIGHLY suggest someone else.

silly jokes. ok lecture but sometimes too fast. not enough explanation. TOO MUCH HW!!
Sit in front, it will be easier to follow her. Very fair teacher.
Good teacher, a bit eccentric. However, I prefer an eccentric professor to a boring one. Sometimes goes through lectures too quickly, but willing to help students understand.
Nice teacher and does a pretty good job of teaching the material. Very enthusiastic and is available for help outside class. Downside is she gives tons of homework and she likes to make her tests extremely difficult.
She's been teaching at WWU since 1993 and knows her stuff. She's very enthusiastic. Daily homework assignments can be time consuming but I found the class to be easy. She lets you drop a test grade or all your quizzes at the end of the year, which is a plus. This class seemed easier than math 112.
she was very helpful and did a lot of example problems during class for notes. homework could be long and time consuming, but she always went over problems in class if people needed it. tests are challenging, but doable, if you look over your notes before. seemed easier than 112 - and i think it was because of the prof.
She is fun and enthusiastic, especially if you enjoy eccentric people. I found it easy to learn the material from her and do well on the tests, however I did not retain it very well.
she's really goofy (in a good way) and it makes the class a lot more easy-going.
Kind of a crazy lady, could be worse I guess. Some sections were covered well with lots of examples and a step by step approach to each problem. While others were rushed and you just had to believe her when she said this was how to do the problem. Bprepared to UNDERSTAND the material before the test as the problems are more difficult than the text.
I'm not a Math person, but I REALLY enjoyed this class. She's organized and lectures are appropriately paced. Her tests can be hard, lots of homework, but I learned more in this class than any other math class. Far from boring (you'll know what I mean). If you diligently do your homework and can hold in your laugh, you'll be fine. Don't be scared!
Katie was an awesome teacher! She's very enthusiastic and very helpful if you are having trouble.

I don't even know what to say...you might like her if you are on a pep squad. Her tests are all conceptual and weird, final was out of control. Her laugh is excruciating and she speaks to everyone in baby talk. If for some reason you get into this class please run away before it is too late!
Katie is a good teacher. The class is super fast paced, and so it is really necissary to go to class every day, and do all the homework. There are daily assignments that she collects daily. If anything is un-clear in lecture, she is really helpful in office hours. It was a overall positve experience
She can draw perfect cirlces. Seriously, it's amazing.
Very nice and helpful professor. Goofy but keeps class lively and fun. Take her if you get a chance.
She's good, helpful... But her voice is so irritating! I got a headache everyday in her class...so take an aspirin before you go!
She is disorganized you will not be able to read your own notes. Do not take her, you'll get lost.
Fast-paced, keeps you on your toes with new material and doesn't waste any class time. Expects you to keep up with the material, but is vey helpful in answering any questions you have. great teacher.. albeit her goofiness.
Not bad teaching, never a boring day. Always laughing!
Pretty good teacher, explains the material fairly well and tests and quizzes aren't too difficult. attendance is a good idea if you wants a good grade. also has an annoying voice and kind of goofy, but it keeps you paying attention.
Class was really fast-paced (which could be expected). Katie did a good job teaching the material, and was always available for help outside of class when you needed it.
I took her for math 124 and 125, and I grew to like her as a teacher. Very quirky teacher, but fun. You'll know what I mean after the first day of class. Her grades on tests and quizzes are a little imbalance. Calculus is tough, but she does her job well. Recommended if your first choice for a teacher is full (the class).
Katie is an excellent teacher and very good at explaining the material. She is very tough in her grading, though. Small mistakes may come back to bite you big time. However, if you put in the effort she is more than willing to do everything short of take the tests for you. DO NOT let her catch you with a cell phone out, or else.
Don't trust the math placement test, because i definitely did not belong in this class. She's really picky when it comes to grading, so unless you have the entire problem right you're pretty much screwed. She's really helpful, though, and the fact that i didn't fall asleep in her 8:00 class definitely says something.
A wonderful person, but not a great professor unless you know your stuff. That class is really fast pace and so there is not much of time for clarity. She is very willing to give you her time outside of class to clarify though. GRADING: very hard, any mistake will screw you over big time. But she does keep me interested at at 8:00 in the morning.
I like Katie! I wish I could take her for calculus. She explains the concepts well and is always interested in answering additional questions. She also goes over any of the homework in class. She kept me awake and interested at 8:00am. Great teacher, nice lady, contagious laugh.
I love Katie! I was kind of scared to take this class because it's accelerated, but with Katie's fine teaching the pace seems completely reasonable! She is super helpful and I like that she does her own thing in lectures instead of just working examples out of the book. Definitely take this class from her if you can!
Great funny, caring teacher. Talks a little fast sometimes so I get lost once in a while but will answer questions well. Hard tests (but maybe it's just b/c Im not a good test taker), can drop one test and replace with avg. of 4 quiz scores. Willing to help you, office hours are useful. Over all a great math teacher.
Katie is funny. She cracks plenty of jokes, and it doesn;t matter if no one else is laughing, she certainly will. You'll want to sit a few rows back from the front due to her loud and harsh voice (and laugh). She moves too quickly and doesn't exactly link the concepts together well. I took this class with Richardson and it made a little more sense.
She's cheerful and perky, and I like her little jokes. She covered the material well and the tests were reasonable.
Katie is AWESOME! She does an amazing job explaining what you're learning and her test review days are very helpful
Katie is great! She explains things very clearly and will not move on if you have questions about the material. Test review days are awesome and tests are not brutally hard. She does have graded homework every night, some like that, some dont. Great professor.
This teacher is kind of crazy. Her tests are significantly more difficult than the homework and examples in class. She rushes lectures half the time and her examples sometimes don't relate to the homework so we have a million questions at the beginning of class. Would recommend finding a different professor
She rushes lectures, gives homework and tests on material she either doesn't go over, or barely goes over, questions are seldom answered with clarity, she has a very awkward laugh, had she not gone on so many tangents and jokes then i might have actually learned the course better. it was a struggle to get the grade i did, get a diff professor
She does poorly at explaining topics for test and quizzes, gives homework and tests on material she doesn't go over, or barely goes over, questions are seldom answered with clarity, had she not gone on so many tangents and jokes then i might have actually learned the course better. it was a struggle to get the grade i did, get a diff professor
Katie lectures fast. Homework every night was useful but assignments were too big. She is corny and likes to make jokes. The tests are do-able. The textbook sucks. I disliked that she had office hours during the busiest time of the day. She could have been way more helpful and made me feel like an idiot when I didn't pass the skills test.
Super hard tests have to go to class to understand anything and examples and homework were nothing like her tests
Don't get me wrong, this class was extremely difficult. No one writes tests as hard as Katie's, I promise. That being said, I learned a lot and got to appreciate her as the quarter progressed. I probably wouldn't recommend her (because she's a GPA killer) but if you want to expand your knowledge, go ahead.
This class was extremely boring. I felt like I didn't need to be in class at all and that I could learn everything just as easily from the book in my own time. Class is not mandatory, but you have to turn in homework everyday so I suggest going so you don't fail the class.
Structured. She definitely keeps you honest about doing your homework and coming to class (turn in hw everyday) but she's a very good teacher. What you need to know is clearly laid out and taught well; if you give it a little effort you'll have an A. And she's always willing to help. VERY quirky though... But it keeps class interesting.
Stables is a nice Prof. She likes to crack jokes and laugh and is very nice/helpful. However, she is super fast, she will zoom through a lesson and dismiss ten minutes early, and if you seek her help in office hours, she will usually help you in 5 minutes or less.
I love Katie. She is one of the nicest teachers I have ever had. Her quirky humor makes coming to class enjoyable. Her tests, on the other hand, were extremely difficult compared to other teachers. You definitely have to know the material really well in order to pass her tests. If you really love math and want to challenge yourself, take Stables!
Katie is a very nice woman, but her tests are significantly harder than in class work and homework and do not accurately portray what she teaches. In class everything is clear and easy but the tests and quizzes seem to come from nowhere.
If math is required for your major and you need to keep your GPA up, do not take Katie for 125. Although she does a good job teaching the material and helping students, her quizzes and tests were extremely difficult. I am not bad and math and came out with a C in 125. However, if you love math and want to challenge yourself, take Katie!
Really quirky professer with a terribly shrill lecture voice at times. She requires homework to be turned in daily for points and lectures new material almost every day, so it is crucial to attend. She thinks she is hilarious, but her jokes are strange at best. I would not recommend for math 124. Tests/quizzes are much harder than any homework.
Katie is a nice person, but she hardly spends any time on lectures, and what she does cover is not very organized or explained. She doesn't seem to have the best approach to her teaching, making her lectures more like a random string of thoughts and less like a unified method of approach to the material. Her tests are hard; this makes them harder.
Don't take a class from her. Tests are poorly made and graded. She has the most annoying laugh and constantly makes terrible jokes that only she laughs at. This class was terrible, destroyed my GPA and I am not even bad at math. You will not receive the grade you deserve.
She is an excellent teacher. Her lectures are very clear and she makes the class fun to come to every day! Take her if you care at all about learning math.
I wish I could take Katie for all my math classes. She is the best math teacher I've ever had.
This instructor knows her stuff. But she makes her lectures very clear and organized so its easy to learn. Also she loves jokes.
Stop. Turn around and get a new teacher. Your GPA will thank you. Her tests are extremely difficult and I've never done badly in a math class before. Again, turn around and try someone else.
You may find an easier teacher but you won't find a better teacher. She explains things really well and cares about your learning. Go to her office hours.
She doesn't even teach. Her method of "teaching" is doing a couple of examples and calling it good without any sort of explanation. Her tests are nothing like anything you do in class or homework wise. I strongly recommend someone else.
If you do your homework everyday and come to class you will do just fine. I love her quirky sense of humor. She makes class fun and explains the material well. I would definately take her again.
She definatly makes the class interesting telling little jokes and keeps things lite but didnt learn that quick from her,I got a good handle on the lessons the week after when it was in the application stage of the courses. Did a lot of learning out of class. She has hard tests but homework weighs in a good amount in grading, turn in every day.
Great personality and passion for math which translates to class attitudes. Good explanations and use of examples. Very little opportunity to improve grade. Harsh grading policy, so make sure you start strong. Good relations with students and flexibility for individuals needs and circumstances.
She definitely knows her stuff, and is very clear in her examples. However, her tests are VERY difficult and harshly graded, and there is little opportunity to improve grade. Had a bad experience when i asked for help, she actually laughed at my face and said "hope for the best, i guess." Unless your super confident in the subject, get away.
Stables is a little kooky, and her tests are ridiculously hard. She actually told us in class that we would be tested on material she hadn't gone over. You can definitely get through it, but I'd pick a different professor.
In the beginning she seemed pretty good. Her test were fairly difficult but that is to be expected. As the material got harder her explanations got worse, taking notes became futile as they didnt apply to the homework. Skills test came along, she graded them with ridiculously. Went from a High B to a Middle C because of a multiplication error.
Katie is awesome. Super nice and willing to answer questions. Perfect amount of energy to wake you up but not be annoying. Everything in the lecture directly applies to the homework. Grading policy is awesome, makes it impossible to fail and easy to do well. I'd take any of her classes.
Horrible teacher. Her tests where really hard and her explication of material was extremely poor.
Katie is a very sweet lady who is passionate about her subject. Though she can be a little difficult to follow, she does well at demonstrating WHY a math formula or shortcut works, not just giving it to you.
Stables is a great professor. Her class was extremely organized which I appreciated a lot. Her grading was very fair and I always felt well prepared for the tests and quizzes. She did a great job at keeping the class enjoyable with her sense of humor, even though it was 8am. One of the better math professors I've had.
Katie is a great professor, but she is TOUGH as nails. If you don't take this class seriously, you will not do well. Don't come into this class expecting a professor who will give you most of the credit for a completely wrong answer just because you showed your work. Love her as a person and professor.
Professor Stables is absolutely adorable and very helpful if she knows that you are a dedicated student. The class is hard and fast and if you're not willing to put in the work than she's not willing to cut you any slack. If you go to every class and do all of the homework then you will be fine! She is very willing to answer questions and explain.
I really enjoyed this class. It was lots of fun. I was surprised by the people that didn't like her, because she is an excellent professor! You will learn lots--don't miss any classes or you will feel lost.
She's an amazing math professor. So organized, it made the class feel easy compared to last quarter with Andrew Good. I recommend her to anyone. Take her class!
Katie is a very organized teacher. Tests are graded and handed back in two days. Attendance is essential unless you already know the material andor learn great by reading the text. Sometimes the tests seem to not relate to the material and she docks points for everything. Show up, pay attention, do the homework, and go to the tutoring center.
Do not miss class, she will help no matter what but you must e the one to ask for it. Good luck, I enjoyed this class, she is quirky but a good prof.
She's a great professor, organized lectures and somewhat tough tests. Must go to class and do the homework.
She is very very clear in her lectures. Does problems all the way to completion. Had her for 118 and 124, would definitely take her again. An excellent math teacher, she really knows her stuff and never presents information in a confusing way.
Katie is super nice and her tests are a million times easier than the homework.
Examples on problems during lectures were much easier than the homework and sometimes they didn't even correlate to each other! Would also tell really unfunny jokes during class
Very funny, and great at explaining concepts. Class is fun.
Katie was a very confusing prof for me. Her lectures were very fast paced and she never asks if you have questions. She uses easy examples in class and then makes really hard tests. She's pretty entertaining and really knows her stuff, though. One time I went into office hours to ask how I could get my grade up, and she said "do better." ????
HW assign. nightly & collected daily-Goes over a couple hw ?'s in class Good lect. & ex. but moves quickly Weekly test are a significant chunk of your grade. I felt the test were way more difficult then the hw. During office hours she will help you w/ class work but if you ask for additional ways to help you understand material she is clueless
There's homework on a nightly basis. The subject matter is tough. And whatever you do, don't get behind. I personally found her voice to be a bit grading to listen to, but she's really passionate about the material and wants people to do well.
I really enjoyed having Katie as a professor. She is very kind, energetic, and approachable.
Very hard to understand, doesnt make a lot of sense and is of little help.
Katie is awesome. If you've taken calculus before, the class will come easy to you. Even if you haven't, she's always very clear in her lectures and is always willing to help if you ask for it. The tests are easier than the homework in my opinion. Homework is required, but she drops your lowest homework grades and your lowest quiz grade.
Katie's Math 124 class was the first college math class I took. I took AP calc in high school, so I found it super easy because it was a review for me. Katie is an absolute delight, but I never had to learn any new material from her. If you know calc or math comes easy to you, this is an easy A if you put in a little work outside of homework.
I have never taken calc before and consider myself to be fairly good at math. I thought this class was of moderate difficulty. Katie explained most things very well. Her tests were fair, and she graded them fairly as well. She grades homework on completion rather than correctness, which I appreciate.
Do you want to spend 30+ hours in the math center? Do you want to spend 20+ hours studying for each exam? Homework every night and a quiz almost every week? No way to check your grades until the last week? Do you want to laugh at her awkward math humor every day? Only to end with a D+?
This class is just one big contradiction. She tells us to read the chapter before coming to class but during class, almost everyday, she does examples from the material we were told to read before coming(?????)
Still to this day this is the worst professor ive had. she has a great personality but is an awful teacher!!!
Took Katie for 118 and 124. Good professor! Tests were based off of quiz examples, which were based off of homework, which was based off of the lectures. Practice problems and answer keys of the homework, quizzes, and tests made studying for the finals easier. You get points just for completing the homework, regardless how many right or wrong.
Katie is nice and can be a little funny at times but her lectures are too fast paced and she can't tell when her students need more time to process the information. She had awkward office hours which made it difficult to come see her outside of class. Her final exam is very fair though. You only need to study from old exams, quizzes or handouts
Katie wasn't an awful professor, but she sure wasn't a great one either. Material is difficult and she doesn't write everything you need to know on the board. Spend most mornings in the Math center for help. 5/10
Katie is a great professor. She's very enthusiastic. Theres a lot of information to take in every class so be prepared to take lots of notes and the good thing is that when she teaches new material she gives plenty of examples in class for everyone to get a better understanding. Challenging tests but would definitely take her again.
As a math major, katie is the hardest math professor i have come by. She has a great personallity and is funny, but be prepared to teach yourself everything along with all the homework she willl give you.
Katie was amusing and often had a lot of math puns. Her direction is clear, albeit sometimes too derivative. I never really felt I was learning the way she wanted me to though. I always felt like I was dissapointing her somehow. Solid teacher.
Homework in this class is a joke. Only 3 of the problems get graded and you get full credit if you "gave it a college try". So forget any kind of feedback from the homework. Also you will have a skills test in which you have to get an 80% on or you lose 1 letter grade. Calculators will not be allowed on it either.
I enjoyed the class with Katie, there is homework almost every day and make sure to keep up to date with the homework schedule that she hands out on the first day of class. The textbook she uses is a little hard to read, but it is made up for in her ability to explain the course material during the class time.
She teaches at a quick pace, but her biggest downside is how unorganized she is on the chalk board. She has notes & teaches homework-related problems, but she skips steps, assuming that youd know them. She also jumps around a lot so some times the math is hard to follow. Id recommend Stephanie Abegg. Shes more organized & does many examples.
Katie is very nice but her teaching is hard to follow. Her office hours are not very accessible and homework is not worth much credit (even though it's necessary to figure out the class). Her tests and quizzes are very difficult, much harder than the homework.
I don't know why she doesn't have better reviews, she's awesome. She teaches with examples, and the tests line up very well with the homework and inclass examples she does. Tests or quizzes every week and homework daily but that is to be expected in a 124 class. Do your homework, pay attention in class, and pass the skills test and you will be fine
Katie's teaching style is very hard to follow. You have homework almost daily that takes usually over an hour and either a test or quiz every week so the workload for the class is high and becomes very overwhelming.
Katie is super enthusiastic about math and seems to care about her students. I found the class pretty easy but I had also taken precalc before, I think I would have struggled somewhat if I was brand new. There's nightly hw which is to be expected but the feedback on it is useless in terms of what you got right or wrong. Overall not a bad class
I gave this class all of my effort for the quarter, and still end up needing 130/150 on the final to get a C- in the class. I am not the best at math, but with help from the professor and an understanding of what's expected of me on tests, usually that is overcome. Expectations on tests were NOT clear, and she hardly believes in partial credit.
For someone so sweet and caring, her tests are surprisingly ruthless. She lecture's a little fast for my pace. But she understands that calc is difficult and gives you every chance to get some extra points... in class activities and attendance points and the like. Really nice but hard to get ahold of outside of class.
Excellent professor. She works hard to improve her class and will help as much as possible. Does move somewhat quickly.
There is daily HW, 5 Quizzes, 3 exams + Final, and a Skills Test. Have 3 tries to get 80% to pass skillstest or else she drops your course grade 1 full letter. Her lectures are fastpaced, and she does mostly examples instead of explanations. Tbh, she reminds me of my high school teachers. Follows the textbook material a little to much.
She's super sweet and is good about clearing up confusion.
Katie is a great person, but her class in unbelievably hard. There is homework pretty much every night, and tests/quizzes are set a bit too far from the actual time we learn it in class. She is a tough grader and does not give much partial credit for your work.
Katie's class is very fair and reasonable. You definitely need to work for your grade but that's always the case in a math class. Her exams and quizzes are challenging but they are very similar to homework, lecture, and handout problems. Homework is ungraded and she gives solutions at the beginning of the class. She is sweet and has good lectures.
She's a really amazing teacher who cares about her students. Her lectures are just like the homework (which isn't collected) which is just like the tests and quizzes she gives out. She's really nice and tells jokes during her lecture. My favorite math teacher at western. If i could every class I take would be hers
Katie is the FIRST AND ONLY positive experience I've had in the math department here! She obviously wants to help students engage with and understand the material, she's warm and makes jokes in class. Her lecture pace is super fast, but if you just say "Hey Katie, could you slow down?" she will! JUST ASK because she is so patient and kind! Love her
She runs this class in a bare-bones fashion. Ungraded homework is straight from the textbook, and she gives out an answer key. There is zero professor to student feedback or learning structure, it is largely lecture, practice, test, which isn't very condusive to actually learning anything. If you want to actually learn this math take someone else.
