I HATED this class! I was really excited 2 take it at first, but I was very disappointed! The class was VERY BORING, got out late A LOT & had more busy work than any other class I've ever taken. I'm a senior and this class had more homework than my 4000 level classes! If U R planning on taking this class 4 fun, DON'T!! Choose a different professor!
I have to agree...this class SUCKED!!!!
I don't know what was going on when the other two people to rate her di so, but she must have changed because her class is amazing now. There is a VERY high amount of reading, but other than that she really does a good job of explaining things. Take it from a Film and Video Studies major, her class is great.
Katrina is a very nice woman but she shouldn't be teaching. Her grading is very difficult and that sucks when there are about 3 (5-7 pages) papers the entire semester.
This class has a lot of reading. The book is used every single week and the lecture has to do with the reading. I'm a Film and Video Studies major so I was more interested in the class than others. It was a good class you just have to be active in understanding the content. But it's not a good class if you are expecting an easy A.
Seemed slightly difficult for a 1000 level class with a high level of reading involved as well as a lengthy paper; However, the class seemed to better with time and the movies are pretty interesting/entertaining.
Great teacher. If you do the reading the class is a breeze. It reminded me a lot of High School. Katrina is very entertaining when she is teaching and seems like a very nice person.
Many people find this class incredibly boring becuase you *gasP* have to watch old movies that may or may not have sound! OMG! I totally thought we were going to watch Van Wilder. Do the reading, go to class, don't be completely retarded and you'll get an A. It''s an interesting class.
Boyd is a great professor and is oftentimes very entertaining as well. If you want to do some work and learn plenty in return, great. This class is for you. Take heed, though, all jocks and slackers who are just looking for an easy gen ed class: look elsewhere. Don't drag down the class for the people who are actually interested in the subject.
She is so freakin weird! She rambles on for forever about nothing! The class would go by so much faster if she would just get straight to the point. She makes really bad jokes that were not funny but she thinks so. I was super excited about this class goin into it but I thought it was kinda of a let down.if u go to class & take notes u'll be fine
i expected this class to be a blow off class and it wasn't...so don't take it unless you really like movies.
This is sort of a letdown as a film class. I didn't enjoy 90% of the movies we watched. It's pretty easy if you show up and do the work. Attending class and watching the movies is vital to making a good grade. I had Diego Batista is my TA and I hear he grades easier than Clay the rockstar (lol). Lectures can be boring and she is kind of strange.
Science Fiction film. And yet again, Katrina Boyd is awesome. For all the complainers on here... maybe you need to give vocational school a try. Boyd is a fun and challenging professor, and a lot can be learned from her classes if you just apply yourself.
I took Dr. Boyd for Film History to 1945, and although the class could be kind of dry at times, most of the films were excellent and Boyd knows her stuff.
Find this teacher and take the class you will have a great time and laugh your head off. She is one of the best teachers at O.U.
She is boring and I would not take her. She laughs at her own jokes. She is really strange. Do not take this professor, Do not take this professor!
I took the summer school Intro to FVS course, and three hours of lecture about film/watching films is way too much, but I'm sure taking this class in the fall or spring would be just fine. If you do the reading the tests are fairly easy. I would recommend taking this class if you are looking for an easy A or B and need to knock out a Gen Ed.
Took Film History and Intro. Knows her stuff and teaches it in an entertaining way. Shows great films. Tests are easy if you go to class. Hilarious and loves students! Definitely take her, but not a blow-off. You will learn a lot if you just put in the extra legwork.
Really helpful and kinda out there, which is perfect for a film/media professor. She also explains everything very well. And doesn't take stuff TOO seriously
Great professor, funny and entertaining, but not a blow off class.
Dr. Boyd is awesome! She's extremely funny (somewhat wacky) but a great professor. She's very helpful outside of class too. Some of the movie choices are boring, but the analysis part was interesting. Not a blow off class, but certainly not too difficult. Great class definitely recommend to someone looking to fill their art credit.
Great class for an FVS major, but if your not it really sucks. Me and my friends hated every minute of it. She also grades papers harder than my english teacher. Take understanding music.
VERY HARD
Awesome teacher, really passionate about her subject. It was challenging at times for me, being a non major, but over all I enjoyed the class. She is very clear about what she expects and gives the majority of information discussed in lecture in the class "reader". Exams are fairly graded but require attention to detail.
She definitely knows what she's talking about, but being a non-major, this class is awful. My friend and I slept through 75% of the movies and somehow all got A's. Good professor though
Doctor Boyd generally had very engaging lectures, but sometimes she would drag on about irrelevant things and I would start to lose my interest. Her TA Sandy Moore was a grading Nazi, and must be the world's foremost powerhouse on grammar.
She's a really great teacher. The lectures aren't overly complicated. She understands that this isn't a majors class. The movies she shows are typically good, even the older films. It was an all-around great intro class. She makes a course packet. Just get that. I didn't use the book once and got an A easily. The tests are entirely note-based.
Dr. Boyd is very funny. The movies that she has us watch in class are great. She also tries to dumb things down to a base level so that everyone can understand what she is talking about. However, when it comes to grading, it seems like things are critiqued more severely than an English professor would grade an assignment. Those will hurt your grade
Dr. Boyd is very entertaining. She keeps lecture fun. The class is relatively simple. The work load is pretty high, but it is also simple. The grading can be a pain, as it is very particular. The lectures can be a little repetitive. The movies are enjoyable.
I thought this would be better to take than Experiencing music because I have a large interest in film. It was not worth it. Take Experiencing music or something else, this class isn't worth stressing over. Unnecessarily hard for an intro class.
She's a really cool and funny teacher, and the TA's are great as well. This class is way harder than it needs to be though. It ended up being one of my hardest classes!
Dr. Boyd is one of the best professors I have ever had. She kept the lectures interesting and I learned so much more than I expected. There can be a lot of coursework, but if you attend class regularly and pay attention, it is not hard at all.
Loved the professor and TA's. The class is way harder than it needs to be though. WAAAAAAYYYY harder.
Dr. Boyd is a fantastic professor. She is great for freshman courses because she gives extremely clear and specific instructions, and guides students so there is no way to mistake her assignments, but that might be annoying for upperclassmen. She is extremely knowledgeable on Film topics, and makes lectures with 200 people seem personal.
Boyd is the best FMS professor I've had. She's very engaging and passionate.
Dr. Boyd is seriously the best professor I have had. I took intro to film for a gen-ed credit and ended up declaring a minor in film because the film courses I have taken have taught me far more than I would have ever expected. Honestly, film turned me into a phenomenal writer and I would highly recommend taking her classes!
Calling this "French" Film and Media Studies would still be an accurate description. It's very heavy on French New Wave, the course packets and readings are not really helpful, and overall, I didn't enjoy Boyd's lectures. Don't expect her to ever cancel class or let you out early.
The class is way harder than it needs to be! Do not take this class if you're not a film major! Take understanding music and get a GPA booster. The papers are graded way too hard. Focus is heavy on the French New Wave and felt like a history class. There's a lot more writing then there needs to be. Nothing like the course description.
no, no, NO. Do not take this class unless you are a film major. They don't cover everything that is going to be on the quizzes/tests and the TAs grade harder than an english professor. You will be stressing out about this class the entire semester. I barely escaped with a B.
Do not take this class!
Boyd is hilarious. Her knowledge of film is extensive & her testing format is easy to understand and easy to study for. It is not a blow off class, so if you think it's an easy, "watch lots of movies" class- you will be disappointed. However, Boyd is SO easy to talk to and gladly helps anyone who approaches her with questions. She was my fave prof!
Dr. Boyd is a wonderful professor. She's very passionate about film and her lectures are interesting. I never found myself bored in her class. I personally found this to be an easy class. Anyone who is a film major or is passionate about film will do well in this class. Dr. Boyd picks great films for this class to watch at weekly screenings.
She takes the class way to serious, this class should be a blow off. Her lectures make me fall asleep and it is a waste of time. Do not take, even if you need an art credit.
She is a good professor who knows her stuff. But I hated the class. If you hate all things black and white, RUN. Die Hard as the opener is a trap.
Boyd is awesome & I think far too many people take her & her class for granted since they think film should be "easy". I'm a passionate film major so it's easy for me but don't look at it like a blow-off; it's not. It's a lot of detail but Boyd will always help and be hilarious and entertaining while she does it. She truly cares & knows her craft.
THIS CLASS IS NOT A BLOW-OFF CLASS. If you want to learn about film, take the class; if you don't, don't. Dr. Boyd knows a ton about film, but her online notes are disorganized and she tends to ramble. There's not a lot of work, but it's all graded fairly tough and you have to do well on everything to get a good grade.
Her lectures are nonspecific and she goes on at least 3 five to ten minute tangents that may or may not be related to the topic at hand. She also grades harshly on grammar and spelling and yet on her final I counted half a unique dozen spelling and grammatical errors including misspelling the title of one of the films 3 times.
If you get a good TA this class is good. I didn't write the final paper until 3 weeks after it was due and my TA still accepted it. If I had worked harder I would have gotten a better grade. Do the work, get the grade.
She basically traps you in by watching Die Hard as your first movie, then assigns black & white movies for the rest of the semester. Her lectures are dumb, she just goes on a long tangent about how she lived in France and about her personal life (which we could care less about). All in all she's alright but I wouldn't take this class again.
Dr. Boyd does go off on tangents in her lectures, but I feel as if she uses her past experiences to better explain the concepts we need to know. She has a nice sense of humor and I enjoy her class very much. Anyone else who complains about watching black & white cinema shouldn't be in a film class.
Attendance is required, but you get three free absences and each absense after only affects up to 10% of your grade. Her lectures can be kinda boring, but she's good about showing clips and making jokes. I've had her for two classes and would definitely take another of hers.
She's too serious about film. She takes attendance which shouldn't matter and she is super late and unorganized with assignments. Her tests are too hard and gives too many pointless essays. There's not a lot of work so you have to do well on the tests to pass. She makes movies mandatory, too. She disrespects the GA's and takes film too seriously.
Great teacher with a great sense of humor! Like any other intro class, expect work. If you do the work + show up to class, you get an A. Easy enough.
She knows her stuff about films but she couldn't possibly be anymore of an obstacle course. She is late to return work and is not kind to the audience or her TAs. The class is made of 4 assignments and 3 essays. Theres not much room for failure. Her lectures turn into long rants where she gets completely off focus. Her instructions are confusing.
There are like four short assignments, a long paper, and two tests the whole time. So you don't have much room to screw up, but she does drop the lowest assignment score. Was very helpful with the paper. Went in multiple times and received a lot of help. Takes attendance at everything. TAs can be annoying and they take cellphone use too seriously.
Dr. Boyd is one of the BEST professors I've ever had the honor of learning from. She's a great professor, really helpful and makes film really fun. That said, you have to make sure you're paying attention in class otherwise, you're screwed.
Dr. Boyd loves Film, France, and French film. If you don't at least kind of care for one of those subjects, don't take the class. I feel like she is a great person and great professor. You will be challenged. I didn't love the class, but I wouldn't take it out on her. She is funny and knows her stuff. It is not a blowoff class, though.
The worst professor i have ever had. Dr Boyd takes her class WAY too seriously. Do not think of this as a blow off class- it is not fun, interesting, or easy. You have two 1.25 hour lectures and one 2.5 hour viewing so basically 5 hours of class for a 3 credit hour elective and then lots of homework. Do not take this class unless you hate yourself.
She's a great professor. You only truly need the book for one or two assignments-- don't buy it. But DEFINITELY TAKE THIS CLASS. She's great.
Do not recommend. She rambles on during lecture and is awful at posting papers on time and getting assignments graded on time. This class STUDIES films from way back. Be prepared to watch long black and white, silent, or foreign films and then write about them. This class is hard if you don't enjoy writing or old films. You don't need the book.
Dr. Boyd is a great lecturer, but was really disorganized with returning papers and putting up quizzes on time. Only take this class if you are okay with watching old films along with a few newer ones. I would definitely recommend going to office hours for help on your paper. You don't need to buy the book or do the readings.
You leave this class without having a laugh. She's super genuine and knows her stuff. Took this as an elective and LOVED it
Dr. Boyd is pretty passionate about film and, in my opinion, takes it too seriously. However, everyone saying the class is too hard is most likely a freshman in their first semester. The class is a breeze compared to other gen eds (I'm a biochemistry major with a passionate hatred for gen eds), write a little, read you notes, and you are set.
Easy class if you pay attention. It is a class about studying film, be prepared to STUDY film. Its not just watching modern movies. Papers are easy, quizzes are easy minimal workload. Just show up and take notes and you'll have a minimal effort A+
Professor Boyd made it super easy to understand film and pass this class. I learned a lot in this class when I didn't think that I would. I made an A in this class my first semester freshman year. I would recommend this class for anyone who needs to fill their artistic forms gen ed requirement.
DO NOT RECOMMEND. AT ALL. Prof Boyd is extremely unorganized, never posts assignments on time, leaves all her grading to the TAs, but grades the few assignments you're given much harder than she should. This class was not worth receiving a low grade in.
I always find myself laughing in this class. She tries to make this class interactive, which i find effective. Films are not during class time, theyre on another scheduled day and those too are required. Shes very knowledgeable and a good time. Sometimes I think theres just a lot going on at once so grading might take a while. Really fun class.
She is the most unorganized professor I have ever had, she does not put power points/assignments/quizzes/tests up when she says she will, she also takes forever to put grades and feedback in and the grading rubric is not clear. It is an easy class and kind of interesting but she's strict on attendance and very very very very very unorganized.
Having gone to her office hours, I can say with confidence that Dr. Boyd is not only the most disorganized lecturer, but the most disorganized person Ive ever seen. Her lectures are like an ongoing train wreck, and she never does anything ontime. Example: Quiz C is a month and a half late. Im 99% sure its a hoax. Easy A, but garbage nonetheless
This was one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. Professor Boyd is extremely disorganized and will never post things on time, but she really knows her stuff and makes class interesting. I sometimes felt like we learned the same thing over and over but honestly it was so easy I didn't care.
Professor Boyd isn't a terrible lecture, honestly. The first half of the semester she had decent PPT's prepared and lectures that allowed me to note-take. Second half, however, seemed like she was coming up with stuff on a whim. SUPER DISORGANIZED: quizzes are given months late and assignments take forever to grade! Got really frustrating
It is Christmas Eve and Katrina G Boyd has failed to post grades yet. She ran the most disorganized class I have attended in my fifteen years of education. She is harsh with her TA's and fails to understand that this class is introductory and most of us are taking it because we have to and have better things to do, like study for our major classes.
Professor Boyd has still not given us our final grade for our course that was completed on December 8, 2017. In fact, we never received any grades for that matter and never received feedback for our assignments. I don't know how this can be acceptable when the next semester only starts in five days. Don't take her courses.
I liked her in the beginning. She had good lectures, she was funny, and shes really knowledgeable. Our final exam last semester was the point where stuff hit the fan. I didnt get my final exam grade until 3 weeks into this semester (spring 2018) and she sent out an email that she graded us harder bc her TA wouldnt help. I went from a B to a C.
I am now over a month in this class and she STILL HASN'T POSTED THE SYLLABUS. WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW OUR GRADES AVERAGE, ATTENDANCE BREAKDOWNS, NOTHING. Very unorganized and unprofessional. OU is an expensive school, please tell me why I am paying this much to be taught this way. It's unfair.
It is over 3 months into this course and we still have not received any feedback or grades for anything. She has a new excuse every week as to why she didn't get things graded. It is absolutely ridiculous to not have a grade at mid terms.
Didn't get syllabus until nearly half-way through the semester. She would tell us that paper would be graded by a certain date and then there would be no grade. She would say that we had a quiz open from Friday through Monday, then I would check the class page every day and it wouldn't be there. She was late to class for our mid-term exam. Terrible
She was pretty disorganized but I think she was dealing with a lot. The TAs were unnecessarily harsh grading papers for me and my friends. Exams are basically just applying terms and movie dates/directors. The movie viewing period was really annoying. I eventually stopped going.
Lectures are extremely boring. Quiz has been pushed back for a full month now. Grading is horrendus and she has two TAs.
Professor Boyd was a funny teacher, and I enjoyed her class and the films we watched. She was, however, very disorganized. Her TAs grade papers pretty harshly, but as long as you show up to class, the concepts/tests are easy and you'll do fine. This was a pretty fun class with all of the films, and you don't have to buy the textbook.
Note our final was on Dec 10 and the due date of grades was Dec 18. now it became my Christmas wish that my grade will be posted by then. She was a funny professor just not so professional.
She lectures really well, but the ambiguity of never getting grades made the class terrible. Didn't give a syllabus for 8 weeks and would push back assignment due dates, making the class just unnecessarily confusing. Films were fun to watch. Tests weren't too hard but do need studying. Overall, workload wasn't bad at all if you can stand her mess
Katrina Boyd is the most memorable professor I have ever had. She is very quirky and very funny in her lectures. but is the most disorganized person I have ever met. She scheduled a quiz that got delayed 2 entire months, every week with a promise that she would "post it tonight". Ultimately a pretty easy A if you show up and take basic notes.
She is a great professor. Most of the negative comments on here are because she was going through a lot, her mom was sick. Everyone on here apparently is unsympathetic. I have her for two other classes this semester. She is wonderful!
Prof. Boyd's class wasn't bad overall, the movies were enjoyable and the work isn't hard. She is pretty unorganized, an example of this being how she took 2 months to post a quiz and how I didn't get my final grade back until Jan. 9th, but I know she was going through some personal issues. Overall not horrible, but I probably wouldn't take again.
I gave her a rating of 1, yet gave the course a difficulty of 4. That is how her class is throughout the entire semester, she is the most unorganized and unprepared professor, yet her grading is harsh and so are the tests. She is extremely late when it comes to posting and grading assignments and then gives some excuse as to why she couldn't do it.
Katrina Boyd is the most unorganized teacher I have ever met. I was always confused in this class. Assignments had pages on pages of instructions as well as links to modules that did not even correlate to the assignment. Tests were graded extremely slow and very hard. Do not take this class, it is not easy and you will not learn anything.
Dr. Boyd is very disorganized. Assignment instructions were very long and confusing. Due dates changed frequently at short notice. The professor doesn't explain concepts well in class or refer students to the textbook. Don't take this class.
Takes way too long to grade anything, respond to emails, and is inaccurate with most dates and isnt consistent with anything.
If you don't have to take this class I recommend you not. TA's graded so tough on my papers but Katrina was very funny and bubbly. I'm sorry, but I strongly encourage you to do your research before taking this class. Trying to save your GPA. :")
Reading some reviews from past semesters, it is clear that she is (ironically) consistently inconsistent. Not a single assignment wasnt delayed in some way, she always spent a ton of time talking about whatever new personal issue she had that week, and the return on grades was tremendously slow (as in more than a month and a half sometimes!!)
Dr. Boyd is the most scatter brained professor Ive ever had. She never posts things when she says she will and her lecture is pointless because she never goes into detail about how to understand the topic. She talks down to you when you go into her office to get help. Absolutely dont take.
Though everyone talks negatively about Dr. Boyd, I oersonally really enjoyed her. She is very sweet and bubbly, but she is inconsistent with grades/assignments being posted. I think I had a better experience because my TA was so nice to me and was a gentle grader. You have to sign in everyday for part of your grade. There's only 5 papers and 2 test
I've seen a lot of harsh negative comments about Prof Boyd on here, and yea she can be inconsistent with assignments and grading which can sometimes be annoying but the assignments are always really easy. Her tests are also exactly pulled from the powerpoints so if you pay attention and do the study guides this class is an easy A.
Katrina Boyd was the worst professor for this class. She never put in grades on time and always made excuses. She is very unorganized and repeats herself over and over again during her lectures. It was very disappointing since I was originally looking forward to this class. I don't recommend her class.
KGB is quite honestly the worst professor I have had here at OU. Her course is VERY unorganized. Three different assignment explanations were listed under one assignment head. Must post discussion under her pinned question. Post your own question and respond to two other student questions. Since the pandemic, she has assigned even more course work.
this teacher was extra as all getup but what do you expect from a film teacher her exams were all basically memorizing terms and literally memorizing the dates when movies came out and Directors .this was more difficult then some of the science class i was in. TA's graded everyones papers harshly and there is little to no extra credit.
She was the funniest professor I've had at OU so far. Her lectures were interesting, the exams were easy, and the films we watched were awesome. Some of the movies she had us watch are in my list of the best movies I've ever seen. She was also very friendly and she'd always extend the due dates of assignments, so you wouldn't have to rush.
Professor boyd was extremly unorganized and made the class harder than it should have been. Would not recommend taking this professor at all.
This class was a complete MESS! Im trying so hard to be nice because I know everyones having a hard time with COVID. However, shes funny and tries hard to make classes interesting, but shes extremely disorganized and takes forever to grade/upload syllabus. Im not sure whats going on with her, but I hope everything works out well. Sigh!
Honestly this class was not as hard as the others reviws paint it out to be. All the quizzes were online and open note. Also, I never once looked at the textbook was easily able to complete assignments in this class. It did feel like instructions given on assignments but if you can keep track of the basic concept given, this class will be an easy A
I would not recommend this class. However, Prof Boyd ended up canceling our final paper and final test as she was sick and could not prepare us for them. She also bumped me to 100. Class is boring, especially the online lectures with covid. She tried to do what she could with covid, but failed. One word: Unorganized. We never knew what was going on
TAs do most of the grading; Boyd does lectures. Always explains the assignments and her expectations well. 2 short writing assignments, 2 pre-writing assigns that help prepare for a 5-pg paper. Quizzes are all online & open note. Midterm is in class but she reviews what is on it. Most important thing for success in this class is taking good notes
There was a protest going on about the covid protocols on campus. The administration told every professor to cancel class. She chose not to. I don't understand why she'd rather put our lives at risk then delay class for a day. It was incredibly distracting overall as it was outside our classroom too. She's a terrible. teacher. She put me to sleep.
Dr. Boyd is honestly a funny, creative teacher in person, however, her lectures do drag on and sometimes the movies do get pretty boring. However, she continually encourages students and constantly offers help through her office hours. While yes, her papers are pretty brutal to write, she does a pretty good job of teaching the material.
She literally will make you read the most pretentious impossible to understand articles every week and then make you sit in a classroom of silence for an hour and 45 minutes. Nobody could discuss the readings because nobody understood them. This class was literally the biggest waste of time I could imagine. . I hated this class with a passion.
She is honestly a dreadful teacher. She insists on having her exams in person during the pandemic OVER MOVIES. Why is it that my knowledge of these films is more important than my personal health? She intentionally makes her class hard because she's pretentious. She should stay far away from the teaching profession.
She's a great teacher in some ways, but the issues with this class are her old school mindset. She holds her exams in person during the pandemic. She also said we weren't going to take a midterm, then randomly changed her mind "because it was too easy". I don't understand the need to make this so hard on us.
The lectures are boring. Busy work for some assignments. The essays however are ridiculous they are made to be extra hard. The average grade on the essay assignments are in the 70's. The Ta's grading is brutal.
She is doesn't care about her students . She has a very old school mindset and it doesn't matter how much people tell her to change the class she won't. We repeatedly asked for online tests during COVID, but she just kept telling us no. She'd apparently rather a student die from illness than have them possibly cheat on an exam.
Quite possibly one of the worst professors I've ever encountered. Is extremely late to grade things. Very harsh grader on everything from the TA. She told the class we are taking our exams in person, which is really annoying during the pandemic. Overall if you don't have to take this class I'd avoid it like the plague you will hate it I promise.
We all hated this class. She is extremely frustrating as a professor. I'm sure she's a nice person, but as a teacher her class is absolute torture. She grades very harshly and insists on exams in the class. She doesn't understand technology and as such makes it miserable for the students.
Shes fine. I took it to fill my art forms general Ed and it was an interesting class. She is kind of unorganized and lectures get boring in the second semester. Class really is not too difficult if you do the work. She does give extra credit opportunities. She could make things a bit easier in terms of accessibility. Solid sense of humor.
Her film history class is worth it for film majors (or people interested in film) because the final project is so fun! Make sure you get a good group. The mid-term and final are hard so get ready to study all aspects of film.
She has a lot of experience in her field and knows the content well. Her class can seem difficult if you aren't willing to take notes or come to class, but you will do well on the exams if you show up to class. She tries to make the lectures entertaining. Class can be a hit or miss for some but I really enjoyed it as a non-film major!
The lectures are prolonged a lot and you can tell that sometimes she is just trying to fill time, so they get pretty boring but skipping class it makes it a lot harder to understand content. There's usually one assignment per week tops and essays are easy as long as you pay attention. Overall the class is very boring but necessary to go to to pass.
Prof. Boyd wasn't a bad professor, but she just read the slide show during the lectures, and we could definitely do that on our own. The lectures were extremely boring, which sucked because I love film and it made me resent it. Also, the TAs did all the grading. She was very generous with extra credit opportunities and late work though.
In my opinion, Professor Boyd was a fairly easy professor as she did not grade things, it was the TA's, My TA was extremely helpful as I got good grades on the essay papers. Attendance is importance as it is a part of your grade at the end. Lectures are fairly entertaining to me but sometimes can be very boring some days.
Dr. Boyd makes this class easy to enjoy for those with an interest in movies. You will probably need to apply yourself in this class, but if you put in solid effort you will likely grab an A. A few medium sized papers are required. Textbook access is required for HW but the content in the textbook isn't tested at all.
Her TAs graded papers pretty hard, and her exams need to be studied for as well. Other than that they mandate you to come to the movie screenings and can't be on your phone.
Instructions for assignments are unclear. I had to click multiple links before finding broad instructions. Assignments are turned in through outside sources and Canvas. Assignments expected to be turned in through an outside source were never mentioned in lecture. The class was sent an email about the lecture being canceled at the time it began.
The course was very lecture heavy. Each week you had discussion posts you did through Packback, an external site. You had to pay for Packback yourself as it was not included. The Canvas course was poorly designed and was too complicated. Tests and quizzes were difficult. All things were graded by the TA's.
The class was very unenjoyable, her Canvas course was organized very poorly and assignments were unclear and it was difficult to find instructions. The lectures were boring and many people struggled in this class. The exams were difficult sometimes but the TAs were nice and graded fair.
Pretty chill professor. The bulk of the class is the midterm + final which are memorization heavy. You could just anki/quizlet those and get an A. Just don't underestimate the essays, they can seem more difficult than they look. Didn't get any trouble when I was on my phone or doing something else on my laptop, even during movie screenings.
She was good. Kind of gets in her own world while lecturing sometimes but she makes everything very clear. Tries to be funny but it winds up being cringy. Overall what she teaches is very clear.
She is very nice and resolves issues quickly whether through email or office hours. Her lectures can be a bit boring but they are usually helpful and you're graded for attendance anyway. If you showed up to lectures and took notes the tests and quizzes weren't too difficult.
I really enjoyed this class. She picked great movies and did a great job of explaining how they connect. Workload is not very heavy, only a few papers. Just make sure you show up!
Be prepared to be bored. Lectures are boring and the weekly movie is a 50/50 shot of being interesting. Attendance is mandatory however if you show up for the exam review she will go over everything that will be on the exam. Very passable class just boring.
I really enjoyed Professor Boyd's Intro to Film class. I am not a film major, and she made the topic very interesting to learn about. There are a few papers that you'll need to write, but they give you a good amount of feedback on them. I really enjoyed her.
I loved this class! Professor Boyd's lectures are very engaging, and she really wants her students to succeed. I would definitely take this class again.
Good class
lecture was on slides and you can access online anytime. one film a week, not bad. very passionate, knowledgeable, intelligent, cool prof. definitely wrote like 5 essays which i didnt expect but they were chill and there's like extra credit opportunities. attendance points but not technically mandatory. rlly cool class very interesting content!take
The lectures can be dry, but the movies are usually interesting. Tests and essays require studying, but with tools like Unstuck study, quizzes and flashcards, it's a manageable class. Just don't slack on attendance.
Attendance is mandatory and she won't do attendance until the last second. The essay are not that bad but just know that the TA are different graders. I would not take this class again because of how boring it is.
Would not take a class with this professor again. She treated this fine art credit class as if it was everyone's sole priority. Terrible
Though the lectures sometimes were boring, Professor Boyd always found a way to make them interesting. The papers were graded by the TAs, who were tough critics and expected you to know everything. Professor Boyd was a nice teacher, though, and her office hours were beneficial. She's super caring and explains what's going on.
Extremely boring lectures that make you not want to show up. The content is simple but too much busy work and writing assignments to actually enjoy the class. Canvas materials and instructions are also very confusing on assignments/what needs to be done.
This class is just pretty boring and repetitive and her TA's grade your paper really hard. It's an easy class to follow it is just graded difficult on the major papers.
Very lecture heavy, and the lectures are terribly boring. Weekly homework, quizzes, and the occasional essay. Just overall meh.
Overall, the class was fine—kind of boring and lecture-heavy, but my experience was ruined by the TA. He was absolutely horrible. Papers were never returned on time, and when they were, he graded them way too harshly for no reason. I have the final tomorrow, and I still haven't received my grade for the formal paper worth 20% of my grade.
Professor Boyd is really passionate about film. Her class is really easy to pass and she provides reviews for the exams that are really helpful. I will say, the TA's do all of the grading so it can be hard to get the grades you want if you get a hard TA assigned to you.
She genuinely cares about what she teaches, but her TA was terrible. Grant was my TA, and he was an excessively harsh grader. Furthermore, he struggled to explain why he marked students down. If you are in that class and your TA is Grant, be prepared. Professor Boyd is truly amazing, provided you respect her time.
I took this class because I needed to fill in an art credit. Don't take this one! We had to watch the movies OUTSIDE of class which I never found the time to do because of my busy schedule. Attendance was mandatory and I almost never went. It was unnecessarily difficult and lots of paper writing. I can't wait to be done with this class.
I took this class because I needed it for an elective and did not expect to be writing multiple essays. Not only do you have to write essays but the ta's who grade them are incredibly tough graders, I've gotten an 81 and an 87. While those grades are not bad they are worth a lot of your total grade.
I think Professor Boyd is probably really cool outside of teaching this class because the curriculum bores you to tears. While the movies we watch are relevant, it is not a very engaging course where you feel like you're learning anything. If this is a topic you're interested in or you're a film production major, you'll probably love this class.
Contrary to many reviews, Professor Boyd was very kind, and her class was pretty easy. There are a couple of papers, but she grades fairly easily if you put in effort. Just make sure you do well on the midterm and final, and you should do well in the class. Also, she assigns a film for you to watch on your own weekly, fun but it isn't necessary.
Professor Boyd is a great professor, and I'm not interested in film, but the class isn't too bad for the most part. The bad part about the class was the TA's. They grade your essays unfairly, and are way too strict with grading them. If you are interested in film, and good at writing essays, this class if for you.
Very lecture heavy because the slides don't go as in depth. Tophat attendance + questions every day. 3 papers, not terribly hard just time consuming. You get out what you put into the class, lectures can be boring but as long as you can memorize info the midterm + final are not hard. Dr Boyd is very passionate about the topics and loves to teach it
Attendance was a big thing in this class yet there were many times that class wouldn't start until 20 minutes after the planned start time? I would not recommend taking this class if you're someone who learns better through assignments, discussions, or hands on experiences. Most of the lessons are through lectures and it can be hard to keep up with
I love Dr. Boyd. She truly cares about the subject she teaches. Almost every test I've had from her was a take-home and her essay questions are always interesting!
Only had her for half a semester because she left for medical reasons. A few writing assignments and a weekly inquizitive, but it's manageable. Some of the films were boring, but a lot I liked more than I thought I would. As a non-film major, I'd recommend it as an easy and fun gen-ed credit. You can tell she's really passionate about film.
