She makes extra effort to make mundane psych stats interesting and applicable.
Great class
Makes learning stats fun, and teaches us what we need to know.
I hate stats, but she makes them acceptable, I even pulled off A's, very helpful
she doesn't offer help, she just makes comments to be funny, isn't approachable
loses your homework, and refuses to give you a grade for it
hasn't found HER teaching style yet, has a tendancy not to lecture
She's not pleasant enough to be teaching

class sucks, but she's hot
she made the class easy. gives you all the formulas, exams are open notes open book... very easy if you go to class...
Open book notes with basically all the answers, can't beat that!

Great prof! 211 exams are open book/open note, totally easy! Gives you all the formulas! Had 285 w/Libkuman, dropped it b/c I was failing, took it w/ Rhymer and got an A-. Definitely one of the best in the PSY dept.

sorry to tell you, but This semester her tests arn't open book-does provide formula sheets though-very helpful. tries to make everything clear with lectures.is an unsympathetic grader-even for little mistakes. still, find me a math teacher who isn't.
I think she is a great teacher. Gives a pre-test before the test which is very useful. Very clear on what she wants and a fair grader.
She is HORRIBLE! The tests, if they were at one point open book- no longer are and are difficult. She has a horrible attitute as well. Very condescending and unsympathetic when students are confused as to what she has chicken-scratched onto the board.
A cakewalk. When taking a test, if you can’t plug numbers into formula sheets and can’t read a table to tell what stat procedure to use then maybe you shouldn’t be in this class or in college.
Umm.....Totally sucks and goes way too fast! My exams weren't open note or book. She notes on the board are complete chicken scratch! Take Chris Joles
Her tests are only open book/note in for summer courses. She's definately better at teaching 211 than 285. Her passion seems to be for statistics, which makes it easier to tolerate her teaching. Wouldn't really suggest her for 285 though.

I think that she is really good. She does move fast, but if you are confused at any point she will go back and help you. She gives pre-test, and tells you what to study for. She is really good.
Very helpful, Im mentally handicapped when it comes to math but somehow she helped me pass, bout as good as you get for a stat teacher. Very friendly during her office hours too.
stats is so much easier than i thought it would be and its all because of her. she is really good at going over material and makes it a lot less confusing take sta with her
She's a great lady; probably the best you could hope for a stats prof.
She has a wonderful teaching method and actually helps you if you don't understand something. The tests aren't that difficult if you follow along in class. The only bad thing is that her handwriting on the board is horrible. I highly recomend taking her class.
BEST STATS PROF THERE IS for sure. This woman is so clear that this class that should have been fairly challenging seemed really easy. Also very helpful if you go to her during her office hours. Structured class, and really easy if you just go and follow along. She's really funny and nice too with a cute southern accent! loved her.
Rhymer is willing to help out with anything. She is very approachable and has good office hours. The material is a bit challenging but she makes is really easy. She gives plenty of practice problems to help out. Make sure you do the computer assignments, they are important for your grade and they reinforce what you have learned. Fabulous Teacher!
Great Prof. Makes a not so interesting subject sort of interesting. She goes fast and writes small, but other than that, she's a good one.
This teacher is GREAT! She is definitely the best you could take for stats. I was really bummed about taking this class, but it's my favorite this semester! She will help out at anything. She has a great tell-it-like-it-is personality. Who knew STATS could be kinda fun?
She is a great teacher. Even though the class is on friday, There have been about 4 or 5 fridays that you don't have to go to. She explains everything, nothing comes from the book, so if you go to class she gives you everything you need to know. Her lectures are never boring and she has a cute southern accent!
She's very easy, but there's a difference between being an easy teacher and a good teacher. She gives you tons of chances to fix your mistakes, which is awesome for someone like me who's stupid at math. But at the same time, now that I'm in research methods, I feel there are things she missed. If you really struggle with math, though, take her.
She is an awesome teacher...probably the best one i've ever had. Explains everything thouroughly and is super nice. Offers a lot of help, extra credit, and cancels friday classes a lot. My friend who also took psy 211 with another teacher was totally lost, but when i explained things the way she did it made sense to him. So definately TAKE HER!!
Katrina ia SUCH a good teacher. #1 She really knows her stuff, and #2 she is fantastically helpful. I hate math, but I loved learning stats from her. I would suggest her to anyone!
This class is required for psy majors, TAKE IT WITH HER, you can save yourself a lot of time and grief. She is incredible.
Class was required. She was very helpful and went over all topics well. I would highly recomend taking this class with her.
no no no. i did not like this class with her. she does this immediate grading thing because she wants to give you the results right away but all she looks at is the answer so you could have the whole problem done right and get no credit because you made one small mistake and you are left wondering what you did wrong.
excellent professor. she goes over everything you need to know for exams, and there are pretests to prepare you for the actual exam. she is very clear and goes over things enough times in class to make sure you know what you're doing. i would absolutely recommend her if you need this class.
Immediate grading sounds great at first, but out of 10ques that are 10pts, partial credit would really help! because her grading is all or no points you never learn where in the problem you went wrong and she's rude during office hours! She's the laziest professor I've ever had and my grade suffered because of it. Take it w/ a professor that cares!
She is a good professor BUT her scoring system is rough on us. If you get one answer wrong then the whole set of questions after that is wrong as well. Other than that ok professor.
Nice instructor, presents material well. Is very willing to help. However, the grading scale is ridiculous. You can be understanding the material just fine and then a test/pretest comes along and each question is worth something around 10pts each! You miss 1 question and your grade drops a bunch! If you're a good test taker, you'll be fine.
overall good teacher with harsh grading scale. Tests are strait forward and she teaches you all the material you need to know. She tries to trick you sometimes. Never looks at your work if you get one thing wrong you could get several points off. Doesn't listen to students concerns. Has a my way or the highway kind of attitude.
I thought she was an awesome teacher and made stats easy and interesting. The downfall is her grading, no partial credit makes it easy to fail a pretest or test when you thought you did everything right. A small mistake in your math will completely screw you over. I would still highly recommend her.
Lecture style class. The book is useful for the first few weeks then the material is just lecture based. Attend class and she is more than willing to help. Class requires lots of work as do many math classes, but she allows formula sheets. Get 10 Sona credits early on for 10 points toward the final grade. Not a math fan, but I got an A-.
Super nice and fun. Made a boring class interesting. Lets you use a formula sheet on tests. MUST GO TO CLASS even though it isn't required. you will be lost if you dont. Extra credit on Sona. And a really helpful teacher.
If you're taking STA282, take it with Katrina Rhymer. The notes are funny, and supper helpful. I am currently taking the class and I haven't even bought a book yet. With a little youtube help (instruction), smarts, and the chapter notes, there is no reason you shouldn't have an A in this class.
Love her!! I HATE math and am terrible at it- but I have a B+ in this class and it isn't that bad. She makes stats really easy to understand. If you have to take this class take it with her!! Only a few computer assignments and exams. Not to hard class and she's super nice & funny
BEST PROF AT CMU!!! Not a psy major or minor by any means, but it was required for what i am going into. Great great great teacher. if you attend every class and take her notes, you are golden!! She explains everything. She may talk fast but all the info is there to do the practice problems and Ace her exams!! She also is humorous!! Take her!!!!!
Awesome teacher. Doesn't try to trick you with questions on exams, she'll explain every problem you might run into. Gives you tons of practice on problems. I had a lot of fun with Statistics and wish that the class didn't end. Best professor I've had so far.
Very good Professor. Knows her stuff. Sometimes snotty if you ask her questions during class.
Good Teacher, but dont ask questions, she will just tell you to come to her office hours. Print all her notes before class, they will help with the exams.
AMAZING PROF! I was terrified of a stats class, math is not my best subject, but she made the info so easy to understand. All the notes you take in class help you with the hw and exams. If you don't go to class you most likely will get lost and not do so well on the exams. She cares about you doing well so she is really helpful. Highly reccomend!!
She explains stats so that you understand it. Homework was mandatory but you need to get as much practice in as necessary. Attendance is not mandatory but the notes are so useful. The math problems are not online like most math courses, so you need the book. I would recommend her to anyone.
She is a nice lady but bad prof. You want help on your hw, well you can't get any. Though you can drop 3 HW assignments she wont help you if you dont know how to do them. She helps one on one but I wouldn't take her again.
In class she tries to break things down so that people understand it but the hw mine as well be tests which i find ridiculous. You should be able to see if you get a question wrong so that you can fix it for the next problem. the SPSS assignments are annoying. Got an A on every exam but didnt do great on hw. Shes also rude.
Class is pretty easy. Rhymer is a terrible professor when it comes to mistakes. She won't respond to emails regarding homework or SPSS. Blackboard assignments can only be opened once and after that you can't submit again and she doesn't even care.
I am in love with this class! She made it so interesting and my favorite class at CMU so far. YES, you have to put work into it. . . but you will learn a lot if you put time into it. She was very clear on what to study for exams. She is an awesome professor and really knows her stuff! Definitely take Dr. Rhymer!
Great!
Pros: Creates her own lecture notes for chapters covered, gives 20 extra credit, allows blackboard resubmits if you resubmit before the due date, some homework feedback. Cons: Lecture notes are hard to understand due to bad grammar and symbols that are not compatible on Mac computer, hard and time consuming HW, hard tests, grades weeks after due.
All around BAD class. Professor contacted students once to welcome them to the class. She made lecture notes that had nothing to do with the exams, good for homework (Class20% HW, 80% exams) . She graded last minute, no feedback on exams or homework. She never made contact with students, does not do lectures, or do any teaching. Don't take! Hard.
It's really difficult to learn anything that will help you on the exams from the 4 assignments she gives you. The homework took a very long time because the lecture notes were horrible. Stats isn't an easy class, but she made it impossible to learn anything.
Here is the issue. If you are a psy major w/ stats/experimental psy as your forte, she will love you & vice versa. Otherwise, she treats you like an idiot when you try to ask for help & will not go out of her way to help you understand any of it, even if you attend class. Her words to me once was, "I shouldn't have to help you. its in the notes"
Taking this course online will NOT be easy. You need to dedicate time to read each chapter and take your own notes. She gives her notes per chapter which help with the assignments. She also gives practice tests to help study for the exam, use them. This is a difficult course to be only 8 weeks and it's all on you since she doesn't teach.
This relates to the online version. I found Dr. Rhymer to be tough but fair - no late submissions and all projects/exams MUST be completed by 11:59 p.m. Friday night. She provided excellent demonstrations of the most difficult equations and responded promptly to all questions (within a day or two.) I'm a 4.0 student and I worked for the B+.
She was definitely a tough grader. She didn't care if you showed your work or not, wrong was wrong. No partial credit or anything. Towards the end of the course she would get snippy with students when we asked her questions. Her study guides didn't really prepare us for the exams. No curved grades. No slack in this class.
Show up and actually pay attention and it's possible to get an A on every test and assignment. She is great at teaching the material step by step and always checks to make sure you understand
If you have the misfortune of having to partake in a class (online or in person) with Professor Rhymer, I strongly urge you to withdraw, drop, or do not attend. Never, in 21 years, have I met an educator who cares so little about their students, her course, and education as a whole.
First person who ever made math make sense to me! Love her with all my heart.
The professor is a very tough grader. Her lectures are okay. She will give extra credit but not much. The class needs studying and solving practice problems and is not easy.
Katrina never answers emails back until a day or two later, and when she does it is a one-word email. I asked her what to do to receive a good grade and she told me that I was doing fine even though I was not. Do not take her PSY 250 class online it is terrible!
Online class is awful. Very tough grader on papers. Midterm and Final are VERY heavily weighted, you could easily get a 100 on all other tests by simply reading the material, and still bomb the midterm and final, which are worth nearly 50% of your grade. I would NOT take this class online with her, she is absolutely not involved and is no help.
This class took up all my available time outside of my other classes. There was so much reading that was expected and the quizzes tested you on small details that could easily be missed. The exams are weighted very heavily and there is no chance to make up bad grades. This class stressed me out way more than I was expecting it to.
Overall, she was okay. The class took up a large amount of time and the work load was a lot. I felt that I had to do everything by myself and I had to read the textbook cover to cover. I could email her questions that I had but she would take awhile to respond. She was effective.
This class was meh. It is very reading heavy and you spend hours just reading the textbook. The quizzes will barely effect your grade if you do well. The final and midterm are the main criteria. I spent HOURS studying and only ended up with a 70%. Everything is tedious. The papers are not bad at all and actually easy! She does not respond to emails
She does not lecture or host discussions or do ANYTHING to teach abnormal psych. Class format is read the book and take the tests online that are automatically graded. On papers, she gives no feedback and if you email her she replies with vague feedback as well. You're wasting money taking her class, you can just read the book for the same effect.
Ok I am going to give it to you guys straight I did not take her class but I used to do research with her She is absolutely HORRIBLE and I am not sure why she is department chair She does not care about her undergraduates at all! She is SO fake and will put on a show if needed in front of other people. She does not have a heart. PLS do NOT take her
Horrible person in general she doesn't care about people
Why is she even allowed to teach? Oh wait, she doesn't. Very condescending and belittles students. Self-entitled if you ask me. Don't waste your time taking her class.
I am an all-As student...... I ended up requesting credit/no credit because I received a C. She didn't teach a single lecture. It's all self-taught. I paid for the access code, but nothing is due through it. It's only purpose is to help you study, which still didn't help me. Exams weigh HEAVY. So disappointed I paid to take this class. Horrible.
I am a psych major, so PSY211 is required. I took it in an 8 week format during the summer, and it was horrible. I worked extremely hard yet still fell short on so many exams due to the awful format... I even politely asked *halfway* through the semester if any extra credit was available and was shot down. Long story short, NOPE
Class is online, 70% exam and 30% SPSS, gives no feedback, emails back in single word or half a sentence. No way to earn points back, tests are all in a style that if you get one Q wrong, every other question will be wrong as well. No interaction with students and literally doesnt teach.
I didnt listen to these reviews and took her anyway. DONT MAKE MY MISTAKE!! Everyone here is 100% right. Ur grade entirely depends on 4 exams, the study guides dont help and exams are a bunch of minor information thats small print in the book. NOT UNDERSTANDING AT ALL. Refuses to give xtra credit. Email responses are short, rude, and cold. DONT!!!
This class wasn't particularly difficult. As long as you pay attention to the lectures and take good notes, you will do fine. Dr. Rhymer is not the best at communication though. I would receive one word answers when I emailed her. She would also give feedback this way. She's also not a very approachable person. Don't take her if you don't have to.
Attending class did not help me at all. She went through the PowerPoint that was on BB & going to class was a waste of time. I found it most helpful to view the slides myself so I ended up skipping class a lot & still did well. Messing up one part of the exam basically screws you and she doesn't consider your work, only answers. Rude & cold, too.
This class was required for my degree. This class is hard, and if you do not show up to class and listen to the lectures and learn the material, then you will have a hard time. I did not like the way the tests were set up, if you got one of the questions wrong, then the next ones would most likely be wrong too resulting in a low test grade.
Dr. Rhymer made stats easy! She was a great teacher who was always caring and accessible if I needed help. She offers extra credit points, which was super helpful. Attending class and doing homework is necessary to earn an A! Although homework wasn't due, it helped so much. She posts practice tests that are just like the exams. Def recommend!
Good lectures, but very tough grader. Exams determine everything.
Dr. Rhymer made me not hate math, that is an incredible feat. She was clear in her teaching, and just down right funny. Had awesome office hours that actually helped me. if you normally struggle with math, take Dr. Rhymer. Also theres no homework lol. Just exams that she helps you review for throughly. GREAT PROF!
Go to class, even if she doesn't take attendance. The subject is difficult (psych stats) but she was a pretty good teacher. Starts exactly on time and lectures for the whole class. If you know what you're doing then you should be fine. I took a stats class before online and the other class was harder than this class.
I absolutely loved Katrina! She is a very amazing professor. Attendance is not mandatory but I recommend going because you will fall behind if you don't. She is super kind and all of the tests are straightforward if you attend class and do the practice problems, even though they are not required.
The final grade is solely based on 5 exams. I promise if you turn the key terms at the end of the chapter into a quizlet and memorize those, you will get about an 80% on all the exams. I do not go to class, nor do I do the readings. This class does not need to be in person, she reads the slideshows word for word.
Conveyed the material very beginner friendly and posts class slides on BB
Such an easy class. Prof was great and teaches the lectures well. Tests were straightforward and easy, as long as you practice with the optional homework. For me, this was a blow off class and I studied for the exams for a few hours the day before. She provides feedback on SPSS so you can get 100 every time. Extra credit on exams too.
Dr. Rhymer is so funny! Attendance isn't required, but I would usually show up because the lectures were very engaging. She was super clear about assignment deadlines and what was expected on exams. There are a lot of completion points to gain from homework, which was super nice.
Mixed feelings. Lectures are good and she explains the material very well. NOT helpful outside of class at all and a very tough grader. I would avoid taking her if you can
I took stats last semester which makes the class a lot easier. There is not a lot of homework and whatever homework there is, it's short. The tests are not super hard, she doesn't give any "trick questions", and everything on the test is covered in lecture. SPSS is really easy, just follow the instructions.
If you're a human and not a robot don't take her class. If you need help outside of class she doesn't care. She's just here for a paycheck.
