This was one of the best COM classes that I've taken at the UW. Exams are clear and straight-forward, and she gives extra credit (you have to work hard to earn that). She's a little strict on citations and her expectations in terms of grading, but she's really clear on that and will leave you a good feedback on each assignment you submit.
Honestly one of the worst professor's I've had at UW. She is relatively friendly, but course organization is atrocious and her feedback is almost completely useless. I felt like I was doing my work based on trial and error, submit the assignment, wait for her to tell me what I'd done wrong and then attempt to fix it, an endless cycle.
You really get what you put in in this class. She gives lots of extra credit assignments that are time consuming and aren't as easy as expected, but they do really help you in doing the major assignments. Plus, she gives good feedback on every submission. She gives examples for almost every concept in easier language! Take her!
Dr. Pearce is extremely nice, and its clear she knows what she is talking about. However, this course was one of the worst I've taken. The organization was terrible and she spent over half the class teaching things that had nothing to do with what we actually needed to do with our final papers and research. Her expectations are unrealistic.
She is so stubborn and has the worse grading system. You only have one day to write a 750 words paper, and you will lose 5% for wrong format or 20% for lateness. If you think she under grades your assignment, she never cares about it. WORST PROFESSOR EVER!
Dr. Pearce makes her course contextually relevant. Though her course material represents real substance, her course organization is a clear bottleneck in student learning. Objectives, deadlines, and what not are set, but her project announcements come out right before class and follow up is just not there. She does know what she is talking about!
The assignment deadline is right before class, and weekly paper is due ONLY one day after class. Terrible class schedule arrangement.
Not an easy A class. Must attend ALL classes. Lecture one day, group work and presentations on another. Reflection essays, peer evaluations, and quizzes every week. Must read all assigned readings and be an active member in class to receive full credit. Posts power points online. I received 4.0 but had to work hard for it. Content was interesting.
DO the extra credit. Even if you only earn partial points, she'll make revisions & clearly explain why so you won't make that mistake on your final paper. She gives you a detailed paper outline with length of each sections, what to defineanswer, related chapters, etc. Peer eval is 10% of final grade. There are 2 non-cumulative mc exams.
if you can skip this class, please do. This class should not be a requirement. I wasted my entire quarter. The professor is disrespectful to students, she shut the door and won't let students who are late come in. Tests and papers are absurd, her instruction is unclear. This class clearly made me lose desire for communications. Worst class ever.
Dont take this class worst prof EVER not helpful at all she sends 5 emails a day but when i ask question, not helpful at all you can never skip the class
First, she's very picky about things even when she doesn't appropriately providing information to students. Of course she gives the guidelines for the assignments which is practically not helpful in getting good grades. Also the feedbacks are really horrible, rather TAs are much better doing so. Never Recommend.
She 's just a worst professor I ever had. Very disrespectful to students and she doesn't clearly tell students what to do on assignments even after asking several times. don't ever take this class. If this course is required, then try another professor.
Dr. Pearce was really awesome. Her classes are really structured & there's a lot of reading, but she gives great examples to make sure you understand all of the concepts. She uploads all lectures slides & responds really fast to emails, even on the weekends. There are clicker questions everyday for credit & attendance. Lots of extra credit also.
She does not respect students. She only cares about her policies, not students. Even students registered this class and submitted all assignments, they would still be dropped by her. In classes, she asks students to have a name card and likes to randomly pick students o answer her questions. The class atmosphere is really serious and nervous.
I took COM301 and COM 303 with Dr. Pearce. She is a harsh grader indeed but I learned a lot from her. You'll know what it means to have a communication as your major. You have to read and write a lot, but you know she makes you get ready for any research or essays. She really cares about your understanding with the course materials.
Dr. Pearce is awesome. I thought she'd be taller though.
She is such a hard grader. She Missed a lot of class so it was hard to know what she Wanted. I tried to follow exactly the format she wanted and still did not receive the grade I wanted, I spent so much time and effort on this class- you need to work for a good grade and even with lots of work she will grade very harshly
Dr. Pearce clearly knows what she's talking about. However, it's difficult for students to understand her directions at times. She offers her help, but in the end she looks for very specific things and students still get a bad grade. She's not the type of professor who makes you feel at ease and actually come out of class learning something.
She doesn't do enough to help or guide students when using the software for assignments. She misses class and expects you to show up without an instructor. She assigns a lot of reading and has a quiz every day of class. She doesn't give enough time for students to complete the assignments during class (required) and docs points for incompletion.
Even with students putting their time and effort into this class, I can't say I'm learning a lot. Unclear grading methods. Feedback is not constructive. Requires a lot of outside class time to finish assignments, when software is only available in the computer lab. Clearly qualified to teach, but does not do so well.
This class was awful and I would not recommend it to anyone. Although class is not mandatory for participation an online software is used and if you miss class you will be incredibly lost. Dr. Pearce gives unrealistic expectations considering her teacher style is poor and she is able to give you extra help when needed.
Worst professor Ive had in UW and wont recommend her to anyone else. A reading quiz almost before every class session. Shes really a tough grader while her instructions are ambiguous.
Worst professor Ive had at UW. Grading system is bad. Always crammed for time to finish assignments that have no point to them in the first place.
The class I took with Dr. Pearce was basically an intro to the NodeXL software, and its really easy stuff but she makes it so hard. When you ask questions shes not good at giving concise feedback and ends up just being condescending if you dont understand something. Very nit picky and overall just takes the class too seriously for what it is.
For the student that is thinking of taking her despite all the negative reviews, I did that too. The class can be interesting; however, you will have your grade plummet. For every percent you go down, you go down .1 gpa and this is drastic for any major. You need to attend class or else she will take it out on your grade. Steer clear.
You have a group project as well as smaller projects that are based out of the book. Her feedback is thorough, almost too much. She will dock you on every tiny thing possible if she can and it can drastically affect your grade. Beware if you're male, she may be prejudice (got into a fight with one outside of the class and was condescending).
SHE DOCKS YOU ON EVERYTHING! I started off with perfect grades for the first few weeks and had 100% on everything but then she gradually started docking me on assignments for EVERY LITTLE THING. I tried asking her specific questions about what she was looking for but all I got were vague redundant responses and a condescending attitude. STAY CLEAR.
Just stay away all of her class. Run Forrest Run horrible Teaching. Don't waste your time no point taking the worst professor in University of Washington. Remember your grade plummet, no constructive feedback, no clue what she is teaching a lot of mumbo-jumbo.
Just stay away any class she is teaching. You have been warned. No constructive feedback, no clue what she is teaching, Awful content, awful structure. If you can avoid this instructor, please do so.
Her class sounds interesting and very useful to apply in the real world. Unfortunately, when she presents material, she reads off of the slides, which is very boring and not as inviting to students. Additionally, she is a tough grader. The tiniest mistake that you make can cost your grade and her feedback is harsh and not as constructive.
I took Dr. Pearce's class in the summer so it was a short quarter and during quartine however, she was a wonderful professor. A lot of homework but it is simple and straight forward. Very caring and understanding about what students are going through.
I mean what I've been feeling is same with low scale people. Her grading scale is pretty harsh, but It's harsh without reasons. There's no solid reason for why your grade is poor, and no matter what you write, your grade is garbage. At this point, this is not even a class, you just are stuck with a power hungry professor who deducts as she please.
Stay away from this Prof and her course. No specific readings, bunch of monotonous and old youtube lectures each week, no human contact, but she makes you work so hard and grades so harshly that you'll regret forever for being a COM student
Professor Pearce is genuinely the most disrespectful teacher I've ever had in my 15 years as a student. Not only is she not understanding of her student's well-being (something she supposedly preaches for) in the middle of A PANDEMIC, but she is constantly putting down her students if they can't meet her extremely vague standards.
I guess I should have taken these other reviews serious when I registered for her class. On the very first assignment I got an extremely low score and asked her why exactly especially on the very first assignment which in my opinion was self-explanatory. I told her the grade seemed super unreasonable and she sent me three pages worth of critiques
PLEASE stay away from this class taught by this professor, you could learn more on youtube for less money! Harsh grader for no reason. Material is easy but she has clearly got something to prove by grading so harshly. This is where your GPA will go to die. Was dean's list student every quarter before this class. Please take any other class
take it cuz it's the only asynchronous one but STAY AWAY from her 25-50 min lecture per week just reading the slides, come with weekly quizzes and a ton of short answers. Grade harsh and you never know why - quizzes are forever muted once submit, never know what exactly you did wrong even going to OH. intend to fail you rather than let you learn
You will do an extreme amount of work in this class just to be harshly graded and have your grade plummet for no reason. Lectures are not helpful and she just makes you watch a bunch of YouTube videos from instructors at other schools. Her own slides are redundant, long, and unengaging. Would not wish this type of teaching style on anyone.
she is terrible, trust me even if you need the credits, staying one extra quarter is better than taking this course. she is very hypocritical, will report you to student conduct for using a simple AI as grammarly but will use ChatGPT for her own grading and assignments. if you do take this course, believe in a higher being.
The professor is kind. Encourages office hours, and allows opportunities for students to get help. Lecturing is through slides/videos. There've been issues throughout the quarter of students using AI to do their work so tbh it's a fair judgment call for her to report it. Generally, its a very hard class, but Pearce isn't fully responsible for this.
the only suggestion: do not take her class!
THE WORST
DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE. I FELT HARASSED BY THIS PROFESSOR AND SHE IS BIT ARROGANT. THIS COURSE IS SET TO FAIL YOU NOT TO HELP YOU TO BE SUCCESSFUL.
I swear the other ratings are lying, all my interactions/experiences with this professor have been great! I will say there is a lot of hw and videos to watch in preparation of such hw, but if you put in the time/effort (as with any other class) then it'll pay off. Though it's asynch, expect to treat it like an in-person class :)
Came across as arrogant and made threats to punish the whole class for her suspicion that a few students were using AI. She also would make announcements whenever a student was suspected of cheating or violating another course policy. Was not an environment where I felt respected. Overall not a super hard class but she doesn't treat us like adults.
Hate this class I swear she has a power trip and just grades based on her mood. I put in so much effort just to get a mid grade when the content isn't even that hard she just grades so harshly
Why does she give negative credit if an assignment is turned in late? I could just not submit the assignment and get 0, but instead I turn it in and get negative??
Just dropped this class because prof was so terrible. She is mean and disrespectful for no reason. The class content itself was not bad, but it is so not worth taking. Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES.
Bro this teacher is horrible. I might as well have taken a University of Phoenix class because she did not teach. Half of the class used AI, she makes you talk to a chatbot instead of taking the time to grade you. She makes us use ChatGBT for assignments to get out of teaching but doesn't allow you to use Grammarly for random written stuff.
She is one of the worst professors I've ever had. The group activities for this class is unnecessary and she expects us to have everything perfect and up to her standards in 30 minutes. She needs to be humbled and realize that we have other classes and that we can't put all our effort into worrying about a small group activity.
She grades so hard and even if you put maximum effort and do your best, the result of your grade is sad.
I regret taking this class. I needed it for my major and she has made me doubt my own major. Everything I did I put full effort into and she graded so harshly. She acts like we are graduate students and has made me doubt my own intelligence. From the other comments I realize it is not just me so I hope she sees these and changes how she grades.
My biggest op at UW I have never in my life had a professor as horrible as Katy Pearce. Everyone thinks the same, I don't know how she is still teaching. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
Although the course content is fairly interesting that is about the only good thing I can say about this class. She is inconsiderate and very passive aggressive. If you ever go to her for help or a question be prepared for a condescending response. The rudest professor I have ever had, doesn't seem to care at all about her students.
This is my second quarter with this professor and she is still wonderful! Genuinely one of the sweetest and intelligent professors I've had. She urges students to think critically in order to learn. For people who love to learn, she's a perfect match.
Horrendous. I legit don't know how she is still teaching. I'm not a student who gives reviews, not even for great professors. This professor is hands down the worst I've ever had. Hope she gets fired when her horrendous teaching gets exposed to the comm directors. Very intriguing class material but she just ruins it. Very condescending.
Katy Pearce is by far the worst professor I have ever had in my college career. Her communication is abysmal as a Communication Professor. She is very unapproachable and clearly does not enjoy teaching. My suggestion to her is go into a occupation that does require interacting with no people.
Not even worth the headache and credit bro...just don't do it...
I'd rather rawh-dawg a beehive than spend another minute in her class...
Bro I wouldn't go near this class with a ten foot pole. Save yourself
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. This is the only time I have felt strongly enough to write a review for a Professor. It is impossible to get a good grade in this course unless you suck up to her and devote all your time to her class. She needs to be humbled and expects all your work to be perfect. She will mark you down for every little detail that is wrong
Genuinely the only time I have ever dropped a class in my time here. I don't know how she was hired and continues to work because she seems to only want students to be miserable and fail.
I don't believe she is suited for working in the UW Communication department, as she does not effectively communicate or actively listen to students' needs. Her grading method is clearly biased, intentionally making someone difficult to succeed. Lastly, she will act on the canvas that she is taking care students and the department's reputation.
1. Her instructions are VERY long and detailed, you're likely to miss parts of them and get grades deducted like crazy. 2. Her instruction is very vague and she never explains how you can do better even if you ask. Just figure out yourself. No constructive feedback at all. 3. EXTREMELY SUBJECTIVE AND HARSH GRADING.
The worst. Don't try. You'll cry.
worst professor i've ever had. she made my life a living hell for a whole month. this course is not designed for the students to succeed, in fact i believe professor pearce wants the students to fail and be miserable. subjective and harsh grading of assignments you will spend an ungodly amount of hours on. it is not worth it, please stay away!!!
Students could learn better without her because students need to make mistakes to progress, she picks random reasons to deduct grades, I have countless ways to lose grades, which ultimately kills my ability to brainstorm, and I am afraid of learning. I ruined my Summer by wasting my effort, her mindset is unique and opposite of teaching.
She gave me heart attacks from long period of rumination. Her poor grading skills and feedbacks severely impacted my ability to think creatively.
Pearce was very condescending and rude. She prohibited AI use and yet used it for assignments which felt like a cop-out for her lack of engagement. Her teaching methods were subpar and her grading was stringent with no constructive feedback. Despite MANY complaints, no improvements or accountability. I hope UW takes serious steps to address her.
I did not learn much despite tons of homework because K. Pearce does not like to explain after critiquing you. "Wow" in a condescending manner was not a necessary way to grade. Beware, she likes to accuse people of cheating in every class, yet she begs for a good review on her course evals because she wants tenure. That's a "Wow" from me! Stay away
So much work for what… does not grade nicely, basically expects you to meet a super high standard and she thinks she's not strict? Be prepared for lots of work assigned each week. Would not recommend to a friend. Constantly talks about how other students will get annoyed if you don't come to class prepared but like girl…are you making that up
Didn't last more than one week in her class. I emailed her about an assignment and couldn't believe how condescending and disrespectful she was to me. Friends still in her class that have been failed on assignments for being accused of plagiarism, prof said she knew she didn't but had to keep consistent. Don't ask questions or she'll belittle you.
This professor literally designs her class for students to fail. I don't understand. It's not even that the content is difficult to comprehend, because it isn't. She's also always accusing everyone of using AI and of plagiarism, when that is not the case at all. It's a little hypocritical, since she uses AI herself in many assignments.
This is the worst professor I have EVER had. She is INCREDIBLY rude and condescending. Lectures are assigned outside of class and she expects you to come in the next day having complete understanding of topics. No matter how much effort you put into an assignment, she will find something wrong with it and deduct an insane amount of points. AVOID!!!
First time ever writing a review for a professor, but my experience in this class was so awful I felt compelled to write one. This class is set up to make you fail. Unless you are wiling to focus and do work only for this class, it is near impossible to do well. Don't take it !
Rudest and worst professor I have ever had at UW. No wonder she doesn't have course evaluations. Do not take this class. It will be a complete waste of your time. Worst grader ever. Her feedback is terrible and she is very condescending and will ignore your emails. Constantly accuses students of using AI. Get her out and stop letting her teach PLS!
Katy Pearce is very condescending and does not support her students. Reaching out to her for additional help or clarification will only make you feel worse in the end. She talks to her students like she is talking to children and when giving feedback, makes it sound like the student is dumb. Constantly takes points away for the weirdest reasons
She wants her students to succeed, but it is very difficult to with how much content there is in the class. Tests were easy, but other than that, the rest of the class is super content heavy with it nearly impossible to get a 100% on any assignments. Easy to get access to additional help, as she uploads a lot of videos on tough subjects.
This professor is the worst I have had at the University of Washington hands down.
Trust the reviews on here, SERIOUSLY. Content and lectures are interesting, yet somehow the class itself is awful. Harsh grading, nitpicking on feedback for every assignment, and extremely detailed graded group activity in every class that she usually gives 30 mins or less to complete. Class energy is tense. Would not recommend.
All the reviews are true. Dr. Katy clearly cares about her subject and is knowledgable, but is HORRIBLE when it comes to teaching. She makes things oddly personal and her feedback comes out always as condescending and rude and never uplifting. Her grading is not concise which leaves you questioning your abilities. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS!
I am in disbelief after this class. Never have I had a professor who grades and gives feedback like this. Not worth the time and effort, if you take this class you will see why. Save yourself.
This is the only professor I have ever disliked and I don't just dislike her, I hate her. The workload is unreasonable, the grading is ridiculously hard (I'm talking 60% average on the final rough draft), and the teacher is condescending and childish. It's insane that the communications department hasn't fired her yet.
Katy Pearce is a stain on this great university. I have never met a worse teacher in my life. She does not care if her students pass or fail, she gives advice and then marks you down for doing what she recommended, she's not clear with her instructions, and she's just flat out rude. Katy Pearce should not have a job teaching anywhere.
If you take this class after reading all these reviews, don't say you weren't warned. I usually feel bad writing these but this class was so horrible I had to make an exception. So many readings and in-class graded writing tests, and huge group project worth 40 percent of the final grade that is graded incredibly harshly. Stay away from this class.
Worst professor I have ever had. Barely explains assignments and then grades harshly. Save yourself the mental breakdown!!
Genuinely cannot believe this professor has not been addressed by the UW yet. Worst professor I have ever had in my entire college career and will grade you down for anything she can find. DO NOT take this class!!!!
I promise you, you don't want to take this class. Even if you like the topic and even if you need it for graduation. Katy Pearce is the kind of professor that truly needs to be addressed by the UW but clearly hasn't been for years, regardless of her awful reviews and overall performance. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!
Katy Pearce is undoubtedly the worst professor I've come across during my time at UW. It's unfortunate that a class that talked about interesting concepts were tainted with 10+ hours spent on reading every week, a grading standard that's inconsistent/abnormally high, and a professor that accuses you of using AI in your work. DONT TAKE HER CLASS.
While I do agree that the grading is harsh, the oppurtunities for extra credit make up for it. I have found her to be a fair professor, if a little stricter than most. She does use AI all the time and then get mad when you use it and is really strict on deadlines so take my compliments with a grain of salt. Maybe not worth 70 1-star reviews tho.
Pearce grades harshly, it's nearly impossible to get 100% on anything; but, she clearly cares about her students' learning and provides very interesting content. Readings are long and dense. Inverted classroom - lots of reading outside, then group work in class. People on here are upset about their lack of effort coinciding with their poor grade.
SO much writing despite not being writing credit. Insanely harsh grader, accuses her students of using AI yet every slide she uses is AI-generated. Passive aggressive and treats her students like children. AVOID
I strongly believe that the UW should address the multiple negative reviews on Prof. Pearce. Even if it seems like only the most passionate people would write a negative review, the difference between Professor Pearce's RMP and the other Communication professors at UW is concerning.
Feels like she doesn't actually teach because she uses SO much AI. Doesn't give real feedback, all AI. Why am I paying for this class lol.
Please do not take! You will spend hours on the assignments and she will mark off everything. She has a flipped classroom and expects you to do and learn everything outside of class. The class activities are wasteful and graded harshly. She is condescending and acknowledges students are not doing well but never that it could possibly be her fault.
Avoid COM407 with her. Grading is harsh and inconsistent. She uses Hypothesis for annotations and Sherpa for interviews but penalizes you for being too structured or not aligning with her views. Expectations are contradictory, and there's no clear rubric. Even well-prepared answers get marked down. The class is more frustrating than it's worth.
The most generic, useless, and unnecessary feedback of all time. Harsh grader and even worse at explaining and setting clear guidelines.
Worst class I've ever taken. I have never experienced a brick-wall persona like her. I maintained adequate communication and worked for hours on the assignments for her to quite literally offer no substantial feedback. Do not ever take her class she will dramatically decrease your zest for life.
The dumbest profession I have ever met, giving impossible amounts of writing work during class group activity. She doesn't have homework; all the grades come from the weekly quiz on the 10 or more long scientific articles that she assigned. If you failed those quizzes, then you are cooked; there is no way to save your grade. Just stay away from her
Never have I taken a class where I hated a professor so quickly. She's notorious for sending students to academic misconduct and is the toughest grader known to mankind. If you try to email her, she likely won't respond unless you spam her, and she's very strict. Protect your peace and don't take this class; if not, you'll risk losing your sanity.
The workload is actually insane for an undergrad class, and she grades harshly. My group got back a draft which we worked our asses off on, with our google doc crashing because of how many annotations there were. And she was expecting citations for nearly every single sentence, the whole thing revised within a week.
Dr. Pearce's COM 303 course is intriguing, fascinating, and includes some of my favorite topics within the field of Communications. She is always responsive regarding emails, always on-time to lectures, and clear with her standards in the class. Her systems for conducting her class are smooth throughout the quarter.
I have never met someone more undeserving of being called a ‘professor.' Before taking her class, I saw that her ratings were abysmal, but ignored it like a fool. 95% of the course material is AI-generated. Endless readings, constant quizzes, zero flexibility. I truly hope the department reconsiders this hire and replaces her.
Harsh critic, even harsher as a person. Shows immense bias, maybe some racism. Reports a lot of students for wrong conducts.
Very passionate and interesting topic matter, however I have never put in so much effort in a class to not even gain credit in my major. The grading was insanely harsh and seemed completely unfair. No matter how hard you try, it seems nearly impossible to get a decent grade. Felt like a complete waste of my tuition money.
Nightmare professor. Have never experienced such a holier than thou person teaching a classroom. She teaches by her standards and sets expectations that are hard to meet. Flipped classroom means you will be dedicating 20+ hours a week to studying and still not passing her BS exams and quizzes. I wouldn't even subject my worst enemy to this class.
UW knows how bad of a teacher she is but does not do anything about it because she does research which boosts the schools prestige. come on.
