She is a very nice lady and sweet, but her teaching style is horrible. Her test is nothing compare to what she teaches in class. Nevertheless,if you are determined you will do well in her class with some determination. She try her best to help one succeed, if you are trying.
The subject matter itself is difficult. I would refer to the book and the notes taken in class. She gave good handouts and several examples so it was easier to visualize the concept. Was availabe during office hours for help as well as by email. Very helpful.
The subject matter is difficult itself. I would go over the notes I took from her class as well as refer to the pages she mentioned. She gave great examples and handouts to help visualize concepts. If I still did not understand, I would always go to her office hours and she was very helpful and always available. Very helpful.
one of the better teachers at gsu. her tests were decent, not too hard nor easy. this class really requires you to think outside of the box. dr. oommen really helps every student in and out of her class. along with a TON of extra credit, you cannot go wrong. genetics seems pretty boring but she makes this class extremely entertaining.
She is very full of herself, she is very proud of the fact that she has a PhD; however, she has no business teaching. Her tests are rediculously hard, and do not correlate to what she taught in class. Unless you have no other choice, find another teacher!
She jokes around a lot and wastes a lot of time. The class average is very low. You have to basically teach yourself using the book. On her tests she wants applied knowledge of what she might have said. She will test you on frivolous little topics and ignore the major factors. I advise that you not take her.
She is no help at all. Teaches one thing during class and tests you on something totally different. I went to her office to seek help because the "review" she gave was so vague [which made me fail]. I told her I didn't understand the question and asked her, she replied with "you haven't been studying enough, I'm not going to waste my time."
Good professor, not great. She tests completely from her notes and lecture, and doesn't touch the book. If you listen in class and take good notes, the class is very manageable. Her teaching style inst great and can be confusing at times. She isn't too knowledgeable about science and consequentially the material isn't too detailed.
The class isnt't easy, but its fair. She only tests what she talks about in lecture so if you take good notes you'll be fine.
Dr Oommen is a new prof, so all negative comments can be associated w/ that in general. She spends time teaching stuff that is irrelevant (in detail) then ending w/ (u dont need 2 know this) instead of spending more time w/ practice problems... she comes off as rude& doesnt like to be corrected or asked certain ?s in class...but gives bonus 2 help
Dr.Oommen is a very nice person whom likes to joke around. So the comments about her being rude are not true. She isn't a professor where you can just go to class and get an A. You have to study and know the concepts well, bc that's what she really likes to test on. So to get an A you just need to study concepts and do her practice problem set.
Horrible. Just...horrible. She tests over what she says in her lectures, but what she says and what she thinks she says are two very different things. She's mean, she is unhelpful, she brags about her PhD incessantly, and she seems to forget that it's a principles of biology class, not applied biology theory. SHE'S ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. DON'T TAKE HER.
Makes class harder than it needs to be. ABout 5 test no quizes. Some extra credit, but doesnt help. Must come to class, she doesnt use textbooks at all.She is an ok person, but I will NEVER take her again
Dr. Oommen was hilarious! She tries really hard to help you learn and can sometimes get caught up in the small things but other than that she is really good. If you come to class (which you have to in order to do well), you will be fine. The bad comments are from students who never came and expected an A. Not going to happen.
Great teacher, very enthusiastic and fun. Gives millions of quizzes, but only your best 7 counted which helps you review and boost your grade. Tests were challenging but fair. If you come to class and do the work that is expected of you, you will do well, but she will not hand you an A.
Dr. Oommen is very funny, but even better, passionate about genetics and she is a great teacher. Relays the info very well. Must practice and read questions carefully to earn an A. Doesn't take attendance, but it is beneficial to attend EVERY class because the subject is so complex. Would take again in a heartbeat!!!
Dr. Oommen is very clear and spends class time well. She takes care to make sure that her students understand what she is teaching. As far as professors go, she has been one of my better ones. Her tests are fair and straight forward. She tests on what she teaches. She uses the book for practice problems and they help with the tests.
She is a great teacher and really, really cares. She tries to make sure that everyone understands and is concerned if even one person does not get it. She is not easy but she tries to boost morale if grades suffered during tests and she is willing to help.
Dr. Oommen is an amazing genetics professor. Attending class is a must! She explains the material much better than the book does. You have to do all of the practice problems, but the class isn't hard. I highly recommend taking her class
She is great! Cute, funny and knows the material.
The subject matter can be a little difficult. The tests are pretty tricky. Overall I think she's a great teacher, she's available during office hours, and she gives practice problems. Go to class, do lots of practice problems and you'll be fine. This isn't the type of class that you can skip lecture. I recommend her!
Strongly recommend her for Biology majors and premed students. Very helpul during office hours.
I love Dr. Oommen. Biol 2107 is a hard class in general but she makes it manageable. She makes sure you know the material before anything else. The only ones who will fail will be those who do not take the time to study or attend SI sessions (which are a must). I was super close to an A but got a B+ instead. Take her if u really wanna learn biology
Dr. Oommen is entertaining, funny, and passionate about Biology. She really did give a ton of extra credit, which was helpful. I got an A+ in the class. Just listen to when she says you must know something in class. Read the textbook.
She taught the subject in a way that I found easy to understand and interesting. Tests are hard if you don't come to class/take good notes. DONT BUY THE BOOK. Her powerpoints are all you need. Coming to class and paying attention will get you an A for sure
I took her for Bio 2107 during the summer. She made the class waaaay too hard for an intro class.
SHE IS BY FAR THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD THE DISPLEASURE OF TAKING MY ENTIRE COLLEGE CAREER!!! She is rude and has no respect for her students. She is not helpful at all. Although i did fairly well in her class, i do NOT recommend taking her class. She is useless and not helpful.
She is a HORRIBLE teacher. She is very unclear, her tests are extremely hard to be an Intro class, she is NO help, She make this class harder than what it should be, she think that you are suppose to be able to apply biology in this class! DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!! I wish I knew about this before I took her class.
Her tests are HARD. She likes to trick you in the multiple choice, and she does multiple multiple choice on the tests.. She definitely makes this class too hard for an Intro class. DON'T TAKE HER! If I know, I would have withdrawn rather than kept going for the rest of the semester.
If you are not a Biology major, do NOT take her class!! She does not know how to teach non-major classes, and her exams are impossible. If you have a STRONG grasp on Biology, and want a challenge, take her...otherwise find another teacher that can properly teach at a NONMAJOR level.
I did not originally have an interest for this class but I grew to like it. The class is not easy but she explains the material very clearly. She goes in the top five of science professors.Do not buy the book her powerpoints are all you need
I took summer semester with her. At the beginning the class seemed tough, but once you study the material before class and go with her power-points, you will do good. Even a single word mentioned in her power-point slides is important. Go to her office hours- she is very helpful. Great teacher for intro level biology.
Her test are VERY TRICKY! The material can be understood by teaching but it's her quiz and test that are very confusing and tricky and she'll tell you to apply yourself during the test. DON'T take her if you have an option!
Dr. Oommen's lectures were great. She was funny and engaging, and I found genetics to be one of the most interesting biology courses. However, her exams were quite tricky. One issue I had was running out of time to go over my answers. Her tests were long! But, she did give a few extra credit assignments and the online hw was a completion grade.
Dr. Oommen is unprofessional, unorganized, and socially awkward for Genetics class. She bullies students, talks to herself, and hands back tests with grading mistakes. And she is not knowledgeable about power points or Genetics portal. Lastly she makes guidelines for assignments that she can't follow.
Excellent teacher. Her tests are hard but as long as you keep up with the reading and take good notes in class you should do fine. You have to study hard though. I have taken bio classes at other schools and she is a really good teacher when compared to them. Take her if you are pre-med.
Honestly I felt like she was the most HARDEST professor ever!! I always study hard for her exams and end up not doing well. She expects you to know everything and when you think you know everything, that exam grade slaps you in the face really hard. For a level one course, she makes it soo HARD!! She knows her Bio tho, but I wouldn't take her again!
Dr. Oommen was by far the most difficult professor I have ever had. Don't get me wrong, she's absolutely knowledgeable in biology and knows what she's talking about, however tests were impossible. Barely used the textbook. Most definitely have to attend her lectures, but her lecture outlines and focus sheets didn't help either. Wouldn't take again.
Dr.Oommen is by far the best professor I have had so far at State. She knows her Bio and is great at teaching it. She is funny and makes lectures interesting and engaging. The material isn't difficult to understand but she wants you too be able to know it without any doubts that's why her quizzes/test are really tricky. Its hard but it's worth it.
She knows her information, but she doesn't teach well. She goes too fast, and expects everyone in her class to be a bio major, she talks way too much about the MCATS even though this is basic intro of biology. Her tests are EXTREMELY tricky, her study guides are not helpful.DO NOT TAKE HER OVER THE SUMMER if you are a bio major, it will discourage you
OMGGGGG! DONT DO IT TO YOURSELF.She's funny but hows that gonna even help you. And yes her tests and quizzes are so tricky, it's very frustrating. Just when you think you've read enough and studied your butt off for over a week, your test results will disappoint you.FYI most of the tests, quizzes are based on her lectures & power points.
My one advice, DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! Her exams are extremely extremely tricky. Her study guides are unhelpful, pointless, and essentially a waste of time. By far the worst professor I've ever had!!! I will never take her again, all my hardwork with studying so much for this course did not pay off
Her tests are extremely tricky, and the study guides that she hands out are basically useless because it is very broad. Do not take her if you value your GPA.
Listen. 1.) Write very detailed notes get a recorder. She talks fast. 2.) Study those notes and the powerpoint slides. 3.) Only read the book for clarification. Do not consume most of your time on the book. Save it for those notes slides. 4.) Do not use the study guide. It doesn't helpwastes time. Read those notes slides. You're welcome.
If you want an A, you must work for it. She has a great personality and cares about whether her students are comprehending the material, but you must be willing to put forth some effort to get the grade you want. If you want to learn, take her! If you're looking for an easy A, this is not the kind of professor that gives handouts.
Dr. Oommen is an amazing professor! She knows what she is talking about and is VERY clear during her lectures. I read the textbook and took notes before going to class in order to pay attention to her lecture. Yes her tests are very tricky, just cover the answer choices and think of what the question is asking. If you want to learn take her!
Dr. Oomen is a great lecturer and makes any topic sound as easy as can be however when it comes to the tests and quizzes the material is always harder than anything shes covered in class and she always finds a way to trick you. Her lectures are interesting but I dont think they prepare you well for her tests. Oh and she doesnt drop any tests :
Dr. Oommen was a pleasant surprise when I first sat in her class. She was a great teacher, and was quite funny as well. But her tests are very difficult and can be extremely tricky. I narrowly got an A, but I didn't receive a single A on any of her tests. Thankfully there is more than just tests to base your grade off. I don't regret taking her.
Dont take her over the summer. Only one extra credit assignment, and all of her tests had an average in the 60's and she didnt curve. Material isnt hard as it's just intro bio but her tests are SO tricky. I'm sure it'd be a fine class during a regular semester but for summer it is too much info to know in detail.
Personally Genetics is the kind of biology I don't like. This is a class where you have to do practice problems in order to succeed. A lot of practice problems. She is funny in lecture but her tests are tough especially the true or false/yes or no part of the exam. You're also given only 50 minutes or so to take the exam. I don't like that.
She conveyed the most memorable material out of all my professors throughout my college career (I've taken 130+ credit hours at multiple universities). You should not be allowed to reproduce until you take her genetics course.
Given that she is knowledgeable about Genetics and really knows how to break things down for the below to average student she is a major bully. Be wary of asking questions in class for fear of her "Are you dumb, maybe you should start using your brain" response. I am not a below average or even average student and I felt intellectually inferior.
Dr. Oommen is a really good professor and her notes are very clear and the practice problems she posts are essential to doing well in this course. She can be mean and intimidating at times, however. Overall, I would recommend this professor to anyone taking genetics. Pay attention in class, take good notes, go over PPTs, do all practice problems.
Do not take this professor ! Everything she teaches on is not on the test. Even if you read the book you will not pass. She tried to trick you with questions. Some of the questions will have two right answers. AVOID HER IS NOT WORTH IT!!! Oh and her notes in class are only pictures. DO NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH!!!!!!!
Very tough grader, unapproachable, lectures too fast. Don't rely on the PowerPoint slides, come to class prepared to discuss the pre-read topics, she will not teach you new concepts but will expect you to be already prepared. I didn't receive much help from her office hours. She came across very unapproachable and irritable.
This class is extremely difficult. Dr. Oommen does not do anything to make it any easier. If you take her, reading the book is a must. She tends to ramble and get off topic during lecture. Her powerpoints are difficult to review if you are not in lecture. The tests are the hardest I have ever taken in college. Every question is a trick question.
She is a good teacher, let's you know everything you need to know as well as provides practice. GO TO CLASS AND DO ALL PRACTICE PROBLEMS SHE ASSIGNS! Her tests can be tricky so be aware of wording and definitions of key terms and concepts. If you do the practice problems, pay attention and go to office hours for clarification, you can do well.
Professor Oommen is highly knowledgeable in Genetics and believes all her students should have the same level of competency no matter the circumstances. Her grading is very tough and there are hardly any chances for extra credit. I believe professor Oommen should re-construct her point system grading because it is very unclear and confusing.
Avoid if possible. Difficult tests, obscure wording and trick questions. Speeds though lectures BUT, her tests are based solely on the lectures. Do all practice exercises, be prepared for tricky exams. Reading material is notional other than the exercises on Sapling are for a grade. Go to class, pop quizzes. Painful power-point notes.
If you are above average students, you will enjoy her class and make an A with just working hard. Unfortunately, if you are below average students or not good applied knowledge test taker, every bad comment in rate my professor is true, and you will definitely struggle even after you work hard. she does give extra credit.
This teacher is VERY HARD. I enjoyed her class because she is funny and tries to tie in real life issues to lecture but sometimes it ends up confusing. Her exams are SUPER HARD and require extreme thinking. She always says that we do the hardest problems in class and the easy ones on the test, but that is simply not TRUE. I struggled in her class.
This professor is HORRRRIBLE . Worst professor at gsu . WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT TAKE HER . Her exams are hard and her grading system is horrible. Try to avoid if possible! I would study hours and go to her office hours whenever i needed help and i barely passed her class with a C. AVOIDDDDD
You're going to have to teach yourself genetics with this professor. Avoid. She has trick questions on her exams as if the material wasn't complex enough.
Her lectures are very fun to attend. If you're a fast learner, taking her won't be an issue at all. Her tests can be tricky but I think she prepares you well for it. You do have to put in a lot of work. She's gonna make you apply what you learn, not recite what you memorized. Don't think it's fair that people are bashing her so harshly.
The worst professor I've ever had. Anatomy is hard enough but she actually expected us to already know this information as if we're in medical school. She doesn't give out any extra credit or doesn't help grade wise at all. She is very lecture heavy and her tests are so precise so you have to know everything. Worst decision of my life.
Avoid this professor! She is one of the worst teachers to take for human anatomy. She does not care to help you should know it. She expects for you to know things like her. Her test are extremely hard, wordy and she does not help you prepare. The lecture is nothing like the test. Go to office hours, study textbook, record lectures, etc
WHATEVER YOU PREVIOUSLY READ IS TRUE ! Oommen was a literal OH MAN ! I regret taking this class with her. Genetics should be easy... she makes it 10X harder than what it has to be and expects you learn from her when in class all she does is go on a spill about her shoes and dumb stuff. Don't take her unless you have time to play games with her.
Okay, I have to say that I am very confused with her reviews. Honestly, I have never had a professor as good as her. I am not a naturally smart student, but her lectures were so fun and easy to follow, that I didn't even have to study for her tests... She is hilarious and I loved her genetics class! But seriously, absolutely loved it, take her.
This is not a class where you can just memorize facts. Her exams are really hard - very intensive on application and critical thinking. Pay very close attention in class and take good notes.
Oommen is by far my favorite science professor at GSU. The material is hard, and her tests are application. Im in nursing school now & exams are similar. She prepares you for the level of difficulty you are going to face down the line in pursuit of a healthcare major. Super enthusiastic. I retained pretty much all of what I learned in her class.
Dr. oommen just did her teach, and she use every method to improve your understanding of certain knowledge. If you stay the same pace with her, you will be fine; if you are lost, just stop and ask her to help.
Dr. Oommen has a great personality, she has lots of jokes and can make learning fun. However, her tests are extremely hard. She DOES NOT curve despite what many students told me. She has a little bit of extra credit but nothing crazy. Fortunately, she has little things that helps your grade. Try to do amazing in lab because her tests are crazy.
By far the worst lecture class I have ever taken. Her lectures reflects 0.000001% of the exam and the rest? well youtube, read textbooks (yes multiple genetic books), and rely on your peers for help. She will not give you any answers or help but a hardy lecture on how life doesn't give you handouts.
Dr. Oommen is a terrible professor. She speaks entirely too fast so you miss out on a lot of information. She says to focus on her lecture notes but lecture alone wont help you pass her exams. Overall, the class is passsable IF you do well in lab.
Her lectures are fun to attend but DO NOT prepare you AT ALL for what you will se on the exams. Her exams are a lot of really complex application problems that she writes herself. Youll need to spend HOURS doing practice problems if you want to pass. So, if you already have a tough semester do yourself a favor and take it with someone else.
Not a bad professor, but this class is not an easy one. You have to put in the extra work. If you skip class and expect to get a B its not gonna work. She lectures great, explains things clearly. I suggest recording her lectures, that's how i made it through. Exams are extremely difficult, especially if you didn't study. Do your best, you got it!
One of the worse professors I've ever taken. Makes the class significantly harder than it needs to be. My grandmother passed away and she would not let me make up missed assignments. Do NOT take her!
Okay she's very inconsiderate of her students. Her tests are open from 8 am- 8pm, HOWEVER she doesn't care if there's a time conflict with work, children, or anything else. She says, "it's not an emergency."
gives few online assignments, gives recorded lectures and supplemental practice meetings BUT She will take 30min to explain something that would normally take 5min this makes her lectures and meetings VERY aggravating Her exam questions are not straightforward. I always get A's in my bio classes but I havent managed to get anything above an 82 .
I do not know where those bad reviews come from. She is one of the best professors I've ever had in GSU. she explains hard subjects in an easy way that you won't forget. She explains all the test questions in her lectures. If it is an online class just watch her recorded lectures and recorded Webex videos.
if you take her online she will not post in icollege about when homework is assigned or due, she posts homework weekly but does not do so on any schedule and the homework is always due soon after being posted. there is no way to set up study schedules if you take her. she also does not put effort into student success.
No extra credit. Tests are extremely difficult. Hard to concentrate because her voice is so annoying and high pitched. She literally makes my ears hurt. She look like an Oompa Loompa, and her grading is brutal. Her test DONT make sense and she act like this our only class. DONT take her, take dr waterson instead, trust me she sucks
Dr. Oommen believes she is better than most of her students, evidenced by telling me in front of the entire class that she has more education than I do when only asking if questions on assessments may be simplified. We had an in-class altercation; it would best suit Dr. Oommen to realize not all undergrad students are seeking an undergrad degree.
Very tightly wound and self-deprecating. Spends class time talking about how shes been single for so long. Rude during Webex meetings (answers questions in the rudest possible way). Puts trick questions on her exams just to make you feel stupid (even if you understand the material). Doesn't drop any tests. She's obviously trying to prove a point.
Honestly get ready to study. The tests are based on her lecture videos which is a good thing, just utilize it. However, she is very rude and I did not ask a single question because of her rude responses to other students. Its demotivating. I would take any other professor if given the option again.
TAKE THIS AS A WARNING. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
Dr. Oomen ain't it. I studied all semester long, and it's been a real struggle. She is super rude when you ask her questions during WebEx. Honestly, please find another professor to take if you value your GPA!
Honestly if you have the option to take another professor PLEASE DO. She is very rude and her webex meetings are a waste of time. She doesn't believe extra credit is needed because she thinks you won't work hard when you take a test and her extra credit is only 1%. I studied like crazy with everything she provided and the tests were still difficult
Love Dr. Oomen! Funniest prof I've had so far, great teacher, thorough, expects you to do the work, grades fairly. If you show up, watch the lectures and take notes you'll get an A. Also she gave an extra credit quiz at the end.
I would give her a 0 instead of a 1. She's not understanding. Her exams are difficult and confusing! I have NO nice words to say about this class. If you take her, you would be doing a ridiculous amount of work for just a 4 credit course. A COMPLETE JOKE! She shouldn't be teaching either! So, run for your life even if she was your last option!
Shes a real scare. My 1st quiz: 71%, E1: 63, E2: 57 E3: 95, E4: 79. I was destined to fail since there were no projects or additional quizzes. Can be very mean off the back until you meet w/ her 1on1. After my meeting, she coincidentally gave everyone EC worth 10 pts w/ 2 attempts! U have 2 watch vids before going to class, wish I did that earlier.
She has been my least fav professor. She is blunt and does not care about your feelings. HER EXAMS ARE HARD. You can not pass her exams no matter how much you try. Packbacks each week and Acheive assignments and exams this is all that is graded. She goes over the material fast and replies to your emails when needed. No late work is accepted.
Dr. Oommen is such a great woman. Sense of humor is top tier. Yes, her class is hard. it's Genetics, if you apply yourself and ask questions she is a big help. She cares for her students, and gives many opportunities to help. As long as you show up & do the weekly assignments, and engage, looks out for you. Tests are hard tho, so be well prepared.
Taking this class with her is hard. Its genetics, literally! Theres not enough time on the exams and they are impossible to really pass. If it werent for me passing the final exam; I probably wouldve failed. Take this class with her if you got time to focus on just her class. Attend her lectures & do the practice problems ; or you wont pass!
Exams ARE LECTURE HEAVY. If you don't attend lecture, you're not going to pass the exams. She doesn't post any lecture videos to help with the exams. She talks too fast. She closes the learning catalytics questions so quick to the point where you don't have any time to think. DON'T TAKE HER IF YOU CAN'T KEEP UP WITH A FAST TALKER and lame jokes.
A lot of content to learn & you MUST keep up or you will fall behind. Lecture is a must because this is complex information. Her humor kept me engaged. Online homework keeps you on track - you have to read a lot and answer questions on a calendar schedule - but it forces you to stay focused and not skip the work. Pay attention, keep up, & succeed.
She's a tough grader. Study guides for the exam do not align with the questions that are on the exam. Did not find her lectures useful and had to rely on the textbook. Participation is mandatory through in-class quizzes which are also graded. Take someone else if you really care about your grade and don't want to be stressed.
Dr. Oommen is very passionate I can tell she loves what she teaches, her lectures are enjoyable and hilarious not boring. I truly learned a lot from her. But her exams are pretty tough but not impossible just stdy PowerPoints. The class overall is not loaded with a lot of work. If you want to truly learn a lot about the body take her.
Took her in the summer & I regret it as it's a lot of information & has caused me a lot of distress. Talks fast but if you pay attention you'll pass especially if you attend lecture. Not the worst or best teacher. If you want to pass don't take it in the summer like me as I will have to retake it. PS: record her lectures with the goodnotes app!!
This is one rude woman. She constantly lectures about making the cut and meeting the standards. She makes everything way more difficult than it should be. It's like she enjoys giving her students a hard time. DO NOT TAKE HER.
