Very tough marker but a very nice person
Grammar is well thought, essays seem to be marked hard.
Overall nice teacher, but a very hard marker.
Good teacher, helps a lot
Was alright, marking wasn't that bad
learned a lot from this course, great teacher
My mentor. She really cares, just no passive voice.
Explains good, really funny. But a bit hard marker
VERY fun, caring, and smart. Essay marks are DEADLY though. Very hard to excel.
Really friendly, I didn't find marking that tough, cares about the subject
Very hard marker. Picky on grammar. I had to drop out from her class.
good teacher, i like essays
She will like you if you're an english major! Not too considerate.
Generally good teacher, but rambles on too much about personal and private experiences. Hard marker. Favoritism. Definitely more relaxed since last semester. A good thing, so there is hope at the end of the horizon for the rest of us.
Very tough marker, took her class twice, BUT she was well WORTH IT! If you want to learn how to REALLY write an essay, take her class - you'll thank yourself later when you're at university or employed! (No foolin' here!)
she a good teacher but a very hard marker, i had to drop her course. if your not a good essay writer dont take her.
very hard marker, very strict (big fat margins, proofread like maniac, tough woman). if u are into english major, than she's good. otherwise.. avoid her!
cool teacher, fun too, Not boring....
An OK teacher. Didn't like the novels she selected. Tough marker but class is interesting. Death to passive voice!
SUPER HARD MARKER!!! she seems to favor journalism students. she has the WORST teacher's assistant ever, SERIOUSLY!!!
Ms. Lukes is a nice instructor. She is a mentor, has high expectations from her students. Although she marks a bit tough,so does everyone else I know in the English Department. If you are willing to work hard, she will reward you for it.
extremely hard marker. if you need a reality check regarding your writing, take this course! although if ur looking for an A(+ and - inclusive), look elsewhere! its a good splash of cold(freezing for some) water before u head of into univeristy(the ocean)
I HATE her marker!! She's OK though. Not my favorite but not the worst English teacher either.
She is a great prof who knows and loves her job, but she is a tough marker.
Will teach you how to write an essay, skills you will use for life. Funny in class. Does pick favs. Likes trashy stuff, wrote all my papers about sexuality and she loved it.
i dont remember too much of this class or how she taught it, but she's an above average instructor.
A good teacher. Her marking is pretty tough but so are many of the other teachers in the Eng dept. You'll enjoy her classes nonetheless as her teaching style is, I find to be really interesting.
waking up early is worth it for this teacher
very interesting person, she's admits she's not every kind etc. she tells cool stories and gets her point across. quiz's are usually semi difficult, midterm/finals always write essays. my mark started high and began to drop as year goes on. mildly hard.
Overall she is not bad and she definitly makes ur school fees worth cuz she wont dismiss u until the next class is knocking on the door. but one thing not good about her is she is EXTREMELY hard at marking. I did not make it and have to drop
very interesting class and material. A bit of a picky marker, but you can approach her for help. Good teacher, good class.
Very picky and unfriendly instructer. Avoid her.
Awesome teacher, inspiring and picks interesting readings. Great to talk to outside of class and marks fairly, encourages self-development.
I had her as a professor several years ago. She was very unfriendly and her comments on a few of my papers were devastating. Of course, it was first year English, so it is understandable - but she was VERY harsh with her criticisms.
Excellent prof! Motivates original thinking, gives you profound knowledge in literature and philosophy! Loved her course, she is amazing!
bizzatch is off the heezy. her teaching style is mad crazy. totally tap that if i got the chance. holla at cha boy
Basically, she's an angry, middle aged woman who takes great pleasure in making her students' lives as miserable as possible.
I had her my first semester and I worked my butt off to only get a damn c+. she's bitter and a man hater and if you do things her way you're wrong.
Awesome teacher. Her Bush rants and sarcasm keep the class interesting. She's marks kinda hard but totally prepares you for higher levels of english. Geniunely cares about making you a better writer.
She was awesome, I can honnestly say that she made me reconsidered changing my major. She's so helpful, and so clear, I would definately recomend her
I heard she use to be mean, but now shes really nice, and easy too.
She is quite a mean woman. Once she told me: "you know, it is not all about effort!" When I went to ask questions on a low mark she gave me on an essay. The course material she chosed was quite depressing... Out of 3 books, in 2 someone killed him/herself in the story!!
She was a nice teacher but a HARD HARD HARD marker. She is so focused on you having a perfect essay and is extremely picky with her marking. Extremely hard marker.

At first, it was really hard getting used to this teacher because she has really high expectations that don't seem grounded in anything. However, I soon figured out that she cares way more about people who THINK and participate in class and have original ideas that people who write perfectly.
People say she's a hard marker but I think she's okay. I took her class in 1127 and 1129, so far on my essays I got a bunch of B's, Plus she offers extra help during her free hours
If you want to learn all of the rules of writing you want Ms. Lukes to teach you. She can come across as abrasive and not like other professors, however, she is a real person - very honest and offers excellent criticism to help you become an expert writer - take this class if you're not a wimp ;)
She is a brutal marker esp. in a second year class. She will give you extensive advice if you go to talk to her, a good chance to learn to write better, but expect low marks compared to what your used to. In class intruction is not very useful, she has been known to publicly insult peoples ideas.
Lukes is a very nice teacher. She has the funniest stories which she tells accordingly to her lectures.HOwever, there is a downside to her, she is a really hard marker. other than that nothing else to worry about!
She was quite a hard marker, and if you didn't leave a third of a page margin, she wouldn't give you any comments on papers!
Unlike others, I found her marking to be the most solid part of Miss Lukes. I disliked the lack of real literary criticism and interpretation she gave in lectures, just shallow conversation and READING STRAIGHT FROM THE TEXT! yawn! Sorry Miss Lukes!
Ms. Lukes is very, very, helpful. She holds several office hours everyday. If you want to learn, and write better essays in the future, take her class. She likes her job too. Nice Lady.
I personally work better with a more structured, clearly stated objectives type of person, but i liked her; it took me a little time to warm up to her, she can be curt. If you're looking for 'easy'(as in minimum effort and alot of missed class time)don't take her. If you like to be challenged, learn, and become a better writer, take her class.
one of the best engl profs at langara
An overall nice teacher but a very hard marker. So be careful if English is your second language
she's good , but she is a hard marker...>"<
Yes. She's a tough marker. but so are most of the eng. profs. u can't expect to just coast through english courses. she's honestly made a better writer. she's showed me how to improve, where to improve. she's pointed out my strengths and has a great sense of humor. she's a good professor. highly recommended.
Ms. Lukes is a phenominal teacher. I love her wit and hangman games. She may be a hard marker, but she is also very fair. I have pushed myself further in this class than I ever did in English because I enjoy it so much. I am taking her again next semester. I recommend her to everyone.
I like Ms. Lukes a lot, i think she teaches really well and is a pretty cool person. Even though she marks hard, but her marking is reasonable and fair. Also...if you're a grammar person, Ms. Lukes can help you with that a lot.
She doesnt have any children herself therefore she is not compassionate at all to students.to be fair i bet if you very closely followed her instruction you could turn out to be a better writer..but who cares i dont want her to affect my GPA..dont take her class thinking that u usually score an A in eng and this class will follow suit, just passing
Her teaching is pretty good, but when writing the essays, she's very very picky. She marks very difficult as well. Be warned, it probably will hurt your gpa
I liked her class but she is VERY picky and a bit of a hard marker.
Ms. Lukes is an excellent professor. If you want to improve your writing skills, I highly recommend this class. If you're looking for someone to be 'compassionate' with you - look elsewhere. While you're at, it examine what exactly you're looking to gain in university. Professors are there to teach and mentor not be your mother/father figure.
Awesome teacher!!!. Keep the class interesting and super helpful when seeing you at her office hours.
She is not an easy professor, but she is fair in grading.
Touch marker, but very engaging! I love her interpretations and her clarity. She tells you what she likes and what she doesn't - very fair. Also quite funny. But be prepared to work.
Ms. Lukes is a very interesting woman with a true love of English. Her sense of humor is quite dry, although lots of people don't get it. I loved her.
I love her! She's such a strong woman and that's evident in her teaching. She teached with confidence and she tells you exactly what you need to do better. She's a tough marker, but not because she's out to get you. For those of you who are concerned, English isn't my first language either and I did pretty well.
English is not one of my interests - I only took this class because it was manditory - but I love her class. K Lukes is extremely witty, has great anecdotes and has a unique teaching style. I look forward to English, now, and I'm trying to work next term's schedule around her english class (1129).
she is nice. if English is your first lauguage, you can choose her. She speaks fast, but she is a very good teacher, clear and helpful. But personally, i didn't do very well because she has a lot of inclass essays, that's really not my favourite.. anyway, she is nice but a hard marker
Ms. Lukes is a psycho. She is an evil woman and has some serious serious psychological issues. She needs help before she further teaches at Langara College. Ms Lukes: get help, you're a nut case.
I took her for eng1127 and thought i would do ok in 1129 but huge mistake! dropped my class, hard marker and just a huge gpa dropper
She is a hard marker; however, she truly wants to educate you and she does. Taking her class has driven me to become a better writer. You will learn valuable skills but be prepared for your GPA to drop. Don't expect her to be a compassionate teacher. I personally made a technical error (did not quote enough critics) for a paper and received an F
Ms. Lukes thinks she is very clever. She often winks creepishly at her students. She wants you to give her the answer that is identical to the one in her head. I think she is bitter because she is alone and no spring chicken. She expects a great deal out of her students. I'm sorry Ms. Lukes, not everyone can be as clever as you think you are.

Aww, come on, guys. I think she is a great teacher. I had lots of fun in her class, and she's very helpful if you see her during her office hours. Buck up!
she's just horrible, also a hard marker!! you should never take her class!! HUGE GPA dropper!
I use to love english, and was planning to major in it until I took her class. She's boring, rude, and close minded. She ruined the whole subject for me as I have completely converted to the sciences. she sucks.
This class was so easy. Very clear and easy essays. Not too much work required just simple essays. Highly recommended people.
She knows her stuff. She thinks she is clever but she is open to discussion and debate about ideas. Take her class if you want to learn about literature from somebody who knows her stuff
Not a good choice. This box isn't big enough to explain why.
decent prof, not my favourite though. class is a bit dull, and she tends to be very close minded about a student's idea if it differs from her own. fair marker, she has a weird B++++ mark that she sometimes gives out which is "almost an A-, but better then a B+". lots of in class essays!
for an english teacher, she's extremely narrow minded. never hated english so much in my entire life, until i took her boring class. what's the point i participating if she only wants to hear one answer? her own!
She is narrow minded and opinionated. I have never had so much trouble with an english course. She's a hard marker and what she wants from you is always inconsistent. I wouldn't reccommend talking her at alll.
Class is fairly boring at times, she has a good sense of humor and is pretty cool. But seriously pretty boring class. Hard marker. Keep getting c+
Lukes is helpeful when you see her in her office hours. I hate english, but I enjoy attending her classes and listening to her stories. She is a hard marker but does give feedback on how to improve your writing.
Good prof overall pretty easy
Lukes is a excellent prof! I highly recommend her =)
Failed a few papers. Real hard marker in terms of what she wants and expects. Close minded and need to buy multiple textbooks which rarely use and costly. Helpful in office hours and a real pusher to make you think of ideas in your essay. Most importantly, a lot of unexpected absences.
Shes an overall good teacher. Helped me alot with my writing since my highschool teachers didn't know how to teach. Although I failed my first paper she helps you alot of continuously get better at your writing. Just listen and work hard
Ms. Lukes was my prof for English X many classes at Langara, several years ago. I am now at UBC and far into several degrees. Ms. Lukes is, to this day, the most helpful and encouraging teacher to have crossed my academic career. Yes, you will have to work hard to get an "A" in her class, but she will provide the most valuable feedback. Highly reco
I thought she was a great teacher but ended up not liking her teaching style.I went to her office probably 4 times a week.Every time I received feedback that it was good, but when it came to essays she'd fail me.I would go over the essays with her and she didn't have any reason following up to explain the grade she gave me.I don?t recommend her.
I've taken two of Ms. Luke's classes because she is one of the best instructors at Langara. She is helpful, clear, and keeps her classes interesting.
Spends at least half the class reading works aloud. Interprets but doesn't analyze. Essay feedback not very useful - took my take-home essay to her and got feedback before handing in, but then had marks taken off for things she didn't mention during that meeting. Overall a nice person and not a terrible teacher, but you could pick a better one.
I took 2 courses with her. She is the 2nd hardest marker I've ever received when writing essays. I had changed up my writing to accommodate her. I never receiver higher than a A- on anything in her course... avging around a C+. She's very kind but when I went to her office with my essay + my thesis.. she made it sound concrete. I got a C-
I enjoyed Ms. Lukes very much. She is the only teacher I've ever seen during office hours and she was very helpful when I went. Overall, I recieved a B+ in her class, and I didn't find it that hard to do. At first I didn't like her strong personality but by the end of the semester I realized she is a very nice woman, despite seeming stern.
I took both 1127 and 1129 with Miss Lukes. She is a wonderful person, full of insight and absolutely hilarious. She is a very tough marker, but is very helpful during office hours. She does not give you all the awnsers, she expects you to learn how to interpret works by yourself. Although she marks tough, you learn a lot of valuable things.
Awesome teacher
I took 1127 and 1129 with her and she is by far my favorite teacher at this school. She is a hard marker but she really improved my writing as well (it has since declined). She really captivates your interest in lit and she truly has a passion for it. I did well on all midterms but didn't do well on the final paper and final. Hard marker though.
She will teach you to be a better writer. She marks like she hates you... She has high standards... But she is witty and enjoyable.
Very helpful in office hours. At first I didn't like her personality or the use of our last names instead of our first, but after some time I came to really like her, I recommend her to all first year English students. I got a high grade in her class.
Was an extremely hard teacher but expects the best from her students. I wasn't a fan of her at the beginning, but now am waiting to take 1129 with her, she grew on me that much. She is serious about attendance. If you show that you are at least really trying, she will take that into consideration. She just will never admit it :-)
Lukes will help improve your writing; I give her that, but she is not, I repeat NOT a very fair marker. She likes a simple and clear writing style, and she happens to be very opinionated. Out of all 3 essays I wrote so far, ive received ONLY c+'s.... I am curious as to why my grade hasn't improved considering applying all her tips....
Fair, but closer to the hard marker side. Helpful in that she really does give you points on how to improve your essays. Her humour isn't my type of humour, but she isn't annoying either. She isn't the perfect teacher, but if there are seats available for her classes, click that register button right away :D
She's a pretty good teacher. English isn't my passion but she rewards attendance, making an effort and trying to contribute. Speak up and express some thoughts even if they're total nonesense and you don't know what you're talking about and you'll do just fine.
As a student straight out of highschool, i loved having Ms. Lukes as a prof! She's very helpful- always welcoming during office hours, gives great feedback. Hard marker, but I got a A- on most papers. I really feel like my writing improved!
She is a hard marker: many fail her first quiz, and barely any As are given. That being said, the amount of applicable information I have learnt is surprisingly useful. Take her class if you are looking to learn, not for a high grade.
Pros: very clear about what she expects from you, does attempt to explain some essay writing techniques and, at times, her advice is helpful. Great comments on essays. Cons: very tough marker, LOTS of silly quizzes. You don't learn much if you have had a good English teacher before. Extra: only buy BE textbook, the rest is easily found online
She has a lot of quizzes, they are just to make sure youre keeping up, so make sure youre in class. Very nice woman.
She was an awesome teacher and I would recommend her to anyone. There are a lot of essays, however, and she is a tough grader. Very few people score higher than a B.
A tough marker and some quizzes are an "all or nothing" but really does help you write better. She give clear comments on essays to help improve and isn't afraid to tell you whats up. She's not boring either and sometimes says some weird stuff which helps when you have her as a first class. Intimidating at first but she grows on you.
Although she is clear of what she expects from you, Ms. Lukes did not help me improve my writing. I would go to her during her office hours and she would say that everything looked good (minus some minor details), but once I handed an essay in I would get a C+. I also found her to be quite rude, but maybe I just don't fancy her sense of humor.
Ms. Lukes is an amazing instructor. She has a cute sense of humor, and marks notoriously hard, but she tells you, very clearly, exactly what you need to fix. If you're looking for an easy A, you're out of luck in her class. If you want to improve your writing, she will make you work for those marks, and you'll feel like you've improved a lot.
Her grammar portion in 1127 is stellar (minus some of the hardest quizzes I've ever taken (but she gives you a chance to redeem those terrible marks)). She edges on the harder side of marking, because she takes into account content and grammar equally. Repetitive mistakes can seriously cost your paper, but she informs you of what she's looking for.
Helpful but super hard. Not recommended if you struggle with English because she marks essays VERY HARD. I repeat VERY HARD. Weekly vocab/workbook quizzes and many readings to prepare. I say take her if you are willing to challenge yourself. Definitely not an "Easy A" class.
She rambles on in every lecture, which is very confusing at times. She wants your essays to always be clear cut, specific and straight to the point. Her feedback is very helpful, but when she marks, she has a specific expectation. Make sure to do your reading beforehand and come prepared for the next class.
Overall found her to be an interesting instructor, her classes never felt long and she had a good sense of humour. Her marking is quite difficult as I never got anything higher than a C+ in her class. However, she is very clear on what she wants in her essays and gives very good feedback.
If you attend class, do the assignments, and visit her office hours for feedback, you will do fine. However, if you are an ESL student or someone who isn't confident in their essay writing skills, I don't recommend you taking this course. She is a hard marker who has specific expectations and criteria. This is not an "easy A" course.
The hardest marker out there. If you don't have a love for English there's no way you'll get higher than a B- in this class. Her expectations are too high and she spends most of the class going off track telling us about her own stories. Claims to prepare you for the midterm/final but gives you nothing helpful at all. Don't choose her.
Do yourself a favour and do not take her class! She has someone else mark your essays. There is no room for any extra credit in her class. She is very specific in what she is looking for in your essays and if you do not meet what she wants you wont pass. Over half of my class has dropped her class. I wish i read this site before i signed up
If you want to pass the class than definitely don't take a class with her. This is my last semester but due to her teaching style, grading criteria i dropped her class and again i have to do registration for one more semester. One major thing she don't know how to teach and give marks in exams. i will highly recommend that don't take her class.
She tries to be helpful but refuses to give students who need more time any additional help. Also very unprofessional as she walked out of class because no one was answering her questions. Hard marker, doesn't notice effort when it's shown. DO NOT recommend.
I hated her class. All the grammar made me feel like I was back in high school.
She's a very tough marker, but is very clear in what she's looking for, if you go see her in her office hours, she'll be very helpful, she also gives excellent feedback. You should expect quizzes every week. If you're not already good at writing essays then your chances of passing this class are slim to none.
She is very specific about what she wants in a test. She doesn't care about your efforts. Utilised writing center for a research paper, but she didn't like that paper. In class just studied grammar and stories, she just explained about writing in the first week.
Learnt better outside class during office hours (and quite helpful). Lectures were meh and felt course schedule/timeline could be better. Tough grader and grading varies depending on the paper. Overall, a neutral choice depending on your strengths.
