Extremely Easy! No Homework!
Extremely easy, no homework?! You sure you had Kayana Hoagland? We had more homework in this class than ANY class I've had at SPSCC yet! She's a fair instructor, but expects you to "know" everything & if you don't, she tends to look d
Student Beware! Only expect to get an A or even a B if you are a math genius already. Great notes, but tests & quizzes are impossible. She tests on things not in the book, but what she thinks students should know. Only for those mathematically gifted!
HATE THE TEACHER!!!!!!!
Very annoying, stubborn, and anti-learning. It's her way or no way. If you can help it, do NOT take this terrible teacher.
HORRIBLE! A direct quote from Her is " If you can't understand this, then your in the wrong class! I thought we were there to be taught, if we already knew it we wouldn't be there. Maybe if the students can't understand it, the fault is hers.
NIGHTMARE is a perfect word! doesnt give enough info. has other STUDENTS explain stuff, thought SHE was the teacher. tests are WAY out of class league. thinks we should already know the work, this IS a 94 class! i could go on! and on! and on!
She was nice, and fair, but hard. You had to really pay attention, and you couldn't slack! I probably wouldn't take her again myself if I didn't know the material, but if you know the material, GO FOR IT!
Tough YES but I did get an "A" and I am no math wiz! If you keep up and do the TONS of homework, you will succeed. MUST do things her way for sure, but if you are learning it for the first time that shouldn't be an issue. Frustrating but not im
I did not like her class structure, she wasted so much time on non-important things and used no time on the important things. PLus her test questions were always the toughest possible
I learned more in this class than I have in any other math class. She's a great teacher, but you have to be interested in really learning the material.
She doesn't explain things clearly.
A bogus teacher! She does things way different! Tests are harder than she makes them sound! Review for tests arent even worth your time! You always have to do it her way! I wish i never took her my best advice and eveyone else would be to stay AWAY from her class!
she is awful I will never take her again!explains things that arnd important. When someone needs help she says go to the math center! she is the teacher right? She also assigns homework and doesnt even explain it until the next day. If i wanted to teach myself math I wouldnt be paying 350.
She has good intentions but a horrible execution. She sometimes assigns an insane amount of homework and sometimes does so without first explaining how to do it, so you have to figure it out on your own. But when you finish with her class you will know it inside and out. Do you wanna work that
Is this class for real? I thought I was going into a math class? I sure wasted my money! Shes terrible! Stay away! You practicall take her at your own risk =(
Worst teacher at the school, lots of homework and very little teaching
I did not like her teaching style i was more confused when i left her class than when i came in!! I retook this class with a different professor and aced it! would not recommend her to anyone with math anxiety!
Obviosly cares about what we learn. Very good on making details clear and ansering questions. You have to want to learn, and then she is very good.
If you know what questions to ask she is a great teacher. But if you need help, know what you need help on, she will not bring it to your attention she makes her class function like an its at a university, but dose get side tracked when she is giving examples.
sucks big time do not Take her
I had such a difficult time with her. I was getting tutored for at least 8 hrs a day outside of class and I still did not pass. I had no clue where she got most of her material that she tested on. What was on the test was not what we went over in class for most of the tests. DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU DO YOU ARE CRAZY
She is suck even though I got A-. I feel like I taught myself through the whole class. I spent at least 2 hours everyday in the Math-Center. She does not explain well. Her Test is not what she taught in the class. I work my ass off for her. I asked her for extre-credit, but she said NO such thing.
Terrible teacher...avoid this one at all costs, even if it means taking night classes! Most difficult teacher at school and I went there 2 1/2 years!!!!!! Crazy and grades ridiculously, takes points off for idiotic things.
shes very very difficult and there is really no way to get an A unless you teach yourself! becareful cuz she talks down to you like none other and she is not very helpful at explaining why she took off points. grr for her and her teaching! :(
Math 157 at SPSCC will usually not transfer to 4 year WA State college. If you want to take this class just to learn Bussiness Calc you are better off just teaching yourself and saving your tuition, or taking another teacher. Please don't take this class, you will regret it, i promise.
She is horiable!!!! I have always gotten a A in math before. She doesnt teach she just reads striaght out of the book. when asked ?'s she cant explian anything because she is no j/k stupid, the best explaination she gives is I don't know that is just what the books says. Please liston to the other commets above from other students they are all true.
She is very willing to aid in my understanding of the subject. Will stay after class to talk about subject. Grades fairly.
Totally sloppy unorganized scatterbrained etc...
She is better when she taught me Math 99. In my Math 156 with her last year, she gave us some takehome quiz and she couldnt even answer some problems in the quiz and so she just counted them as extra bonus :-O ... Speechless...Guess the school should hire smarter Math Teachers
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!!! She is the worst teacher I've ever had! I have have never had such a stressfull class! I feel like I should get my tuition money back because I didn't learn a thing!!! She should be fired
Okay person, but very poor teacher. She struggled at explaining things, didn't understand the material, and would constantly get corrected by students when she was teaching the lessons. After the first week I stopped listening to her lectures and just read explanations from the book, because she was too confusing.
Shes not that great of a teacher. She says one thing and does another. Its very annoying. One time i asked her how much one of the assigments was worth and she said 20pts. The day it was "DUE" she never collected it and said we did it in class. I was upset cause i worked really hard on it.
Incomprehensible style of teaching, treats students as if they were 2 years old. Throws in useless information during lessons, can NOT follow a lesson plan, is extremely disrespectful of her students.
she seems like a nice person but her teaching style is not compatible with anyone in our class...trust me, we've all talked. she is not very encouraging and the comments she leaves on your homework/tests really bring you down. :(
Very willing to help students when she is asked!
She does not know how to get her message across. She makes multiple errors a day and when you correct her she will argue with you. Her favorite line is "that's not what I meant, who would you say it." She has been teaching this class for 2 years and has no clue. Kind of bad when you need this class to become a teacher.
hate the class with a passion. makes me want to switch majors, yes its that bad. i'll never take another class from her. i'll drive to the north pole if i have to or take it online. my friend and i are sitting in the computer lab talking about this and we decided to WARN the rest of you that want to be elementar teachers. avoid Hoagland.
Yes, I agree with everyone the class is a waste of time and $ and I need this class to be a good elementary teacher. She has no idea how to explain basic concepts and she picks our homework to death. Sit in the front row, smile, nod your head, and don't ask questions that insinuate you're disagreeing and you're grade will go up. I hate this class!
May she has read these older comments and really tries to do better now. If you want to learn, I think she is a great teacher, but if you are trying for an easy A then you are not going to suceed in this class. I didn't know much math when I started, but she has make it interesting and I look forward to class. JUST DO THE WORK AND IT WILL PAY OFF!!
Hoagland Rocks! For me, she made math enjoyable and sparked an interest. I?d leave feeling confident with my math skills. She?d even spend an entire day going over questions and homework problems which is very helpful for tests and clarity. I always looked forward to going to her class. Very kind of her to help students as much as possible; in and
She's a really nice lady..but a horrible teacher. I took her class and left feeling stupid. I took a different math professor's class and got a B-. She is super picky about homework and whether you leave our comma's or periods and such. I won't take her again....but like I said, really sweet lady.
All I have to say is save up money for gas to drive to Tacoma or Centralia to take this class. This teacher is horrible and treats all of the students like there are back in elementary school.
Because of this instructor, I can now understand Math. Anyone who has a desire to learn, or has had previous "failure" in the subject will benefit. Yes, you do have to put your commas in the right place.. if not, you get a different answer entirely. If you're a crybaby who needs a medal simply for attending college, you will not enjoy this class.
Clarity wise, she wasn't the best, but what you don't learn from her you can learn in the textbook. She expects you to know some math beforehand, so don't be surprised if she skips some chapters in the book. The class wasn't bad though.
I really enjoyed Kayana's class. Until her class I didn't really enjoy or understand math very well and now it's some thing I am contemplating doing as a career. She uses many ways to teach including hands on activities...which I find helpful. In addition she is always available for help and has a very positive attitude about teaching.
So sad that I may settle for a regular AA because this teacher thinks you should have no life outside of math. So many hours of homework that I guarantee your other classes will suffer. Don't bother talking to the DEAN since he has no backbone. I actually enjoy math but this class is NUTS. Seeing so many of us suffer because of this teacher, sad.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. 3/4 of the class have failed every test and she refuses to go over it, grade on a curve, or give extra credit. She assumes you have no life and the homework is outrageous. Her grading is inconsistent and she is not a fair teacher. I do not advise anyone to take this class..
She gave class works, math articles, reading notes, homework, and more. There were over six tests total and half the class failed them all. I would take this class elsewhere if haven't taken high math in high school. Don't expect to ace this class or even pass here.
She is fair with grading, TONS of opportunities to earn extra credit. The homework isn't overwhelming. To all the other posts I have read, I don't get it. ALL math classes have homework. If you need help, she's always great about it. Class got off to a rough start, but she's really a good teacher.
Ill put it this way. You'll get the answer to the problem right, but no points due to a missed comma... My grade suffered in this class. Nice lady, but plays favorites and even after 8 weeks, still hasn't learned my name or checked my journal :/
Kayana is WAAAAY underrated! She is the best math teacher I have ever had. I had completely given up on math before this class - I'd just never been able to be interested or understand it, because of bad teachers/classes. She is absolutely wonderful and definitely one of the GREATEST instructors out there!
while the class is fairly simplistic this instructors teaching style is erratic and hard to follow. on homework and tests you can get the answer right but if you dont work the problem the way she thinks it should be done you will get the answer wrong
I learned more from the homework program. Seems like she didn't know the material for the last 2 weeks if the quarter.
I think she's good at her job and if you follow her lead you will learn. Not always easy and she is more of the "give you the tools to help yourself" type rather than a "sit down and help you" type. She does make herself available if you do need extra help though (I'm told in the math lab).
She seems like a nice lady but if you are not a math genius or think you may even miss one day DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! I passed with a C as apposed to my other classes where I got A's &this class was by far more strenuous. She tries to teach too much in a little amount of time and it just doesn't work. This class will make your other classes suffer.
Kayana was an amazing professor teaching my Intro to teaching Elementary Math. She always applied the math to real life and what we would have to do as a future teacher. She had a tough job, since she had to take over the class for another professor that had to take a sick leave. With that said, she was very inspiring.
She is not a good professor she taught the class as if they were 1st Graders. It has to be her way or nothing at all. She doesn't encourage students and makes students feel stupid.
really enjoyed her teaching style and seemed to do well in her class. she makes you work for it... don't miss many days or it will hurt but it is college... expect homework... quite a bit of it but she does review it and tells you how she wants things done... and she gives you reviews for test that are a lot like your test. very clear instruction.
Best teacher ever! She makes you work for your grade but if you do you'll learn a ton. Way better than Gauss!
Best math teacher I have had in a long time. Material is clear, she is very helpful and allows one page notes on tests. I took her daily math class and we had homework every night, but it wasn't an overload of work. The test she gave had two parts one take home and one in class.
I learned more in this class than I did my entire time in high school. Math finally makes sense.
This professor answered all my questions and went slow enough for the entire class to keep up.
She gives extra credit and lets you redo test corrections for points.
This class was nothing like I expected. It was a lot of geometry, probability, math history, and different bases. We did a book report and an individual research project on something we were interested in. If you keep up in class you don't have any homework except for weekends. Oh ya, it was great we spent only $15 on a book for our chapter report
I would take this professor next quarter but she's not teaching the clas I need. Maybe I can get her in a few quarters for Math107 or Math 99
She is a great teacher.
Miss K is a very good teacher. She gives a didactic and undestable class. I recommend students take her class.
Good class. Show up to class take notes and you will do just fine. Ask questions if you don't understand anything while doing any of the material
Miss K is great. I tend to be a little slow at catching on to each next thing, but even if she goes a little fast during class, she will always answer questions either in her office after class or on wamap. If you find the class going a little fast for you the Math tutors are amazing and helped me bring my grade from 55% up to 86.5%. Recommended!
Although her class got a little tough and the amount of homework given was a little much at times. Over all she is a good treacher and really takes her time explaining things and making we understand! Very patient.
She is a great teacher, she gives lots of homework but I see it as a way of practice. She's very knowledgeable and she was very supportive to me the during the quarter. She can be very strict but at the same time compassionate. I did learned a lot with her and I am more organized when solving math equations. Thank you Ms. K for everything
Helps you with homework and gives you a chance to earn back points on tests. If you do miss class she does post worksheets online for you to print and have ready for next class.
To start we don't have a textbook so class is all over the place. If you don't understand the material she will belittle you in front of class. Will NOT take her again.
Literally the best math teacher I have ever had she made everything so clear and if you didn't get it she would go over it with you and make sure you do i wish she could teach every math class! She made the class very easy. favorite teacher at spscc
It might be the class I took, but there were many subjects covered, and the professor never seemed to slow down or check in with the class' comprehension.
This is one of the worse Professors that I have ever had in my college experience. I have heard her belittle my class as if it was okay do to do and I quote "The reason why you are all here is because you fail to understand and get the concepts to move forward.". I would not recommend her to anyone that I would avoid her like the plague
She doesn't teach you what you need to know to get the grade you deserve. She assigns homework called short sets with a ton of questions you not only have to figure out on your own, but also have to write an essay on. After you get the answers wrong, she teaches you how to do your assignment after she has failed you on what she failed to teach.
Professor Hoagland had to have been one of my least favorite professors. Throughout the quarter she spoke highly of extra credit opportunities and ended up not giving any extra credit. Her grading was inconsistent between students and also graded down on simple mistakes. I would strongly recommend choosing a different professor for this course.
Nice teacher, just a very picky grader! The final and the midterm are each worth 25% of your grade, so you need to understand exactly what she wants. Take notes on everything, because you can use them on the final. Take that class with a friend, because if you are confused she is not very helpful. Overall a good class to take to get you math cred!
I took intro to statistics with Mrs. K and although she's a nice person, she's not a good teacher. There is lots of homework, collected every Monday before taking a weekly quiz. Notes are allowed on midterms and final. This class was fine for filling a math credit but I wouldn't recommend if you are planning on continuing with higher level math.
Although she is a nice lady, she is the most frustrating teacher I've had. She goes through the information so fast you cannot get through it without other students help. She asks questions all the time and no one can answer them. Please find another teacher for Math. You will be grateful
She overall is a very nice teacher but the way she conducts her class is ridiculous. She grades attendance and there are lots of pop quizzes. She also assigns a lot of homework at once. Would not recommend to any.
Overall this was a really easy class, but I think that she taught it so slowly. For me, it was really hard to focus. But, she did not require you to have a textbook. Instead she wanted you to have printed worksheets. These were actually really helpful, and she did not assign too much homework. She grades easy, but marks up your paper way too much!
Kayana is a great professor. There is no textbook used. Homework is usually 1-2 pages and checking in with the Hawkes Program. She will work one on one with you if you need help and encourages you to visit her in her office. She is a bit nit picky with grading but she will explain exactly what shes looking for when grading.
Mrs. Kayana's is an easy teacher. I regret taking this class because I originally thought it would be focused on the math used in society (EX: doing taxes, and basic math with money). This was not the case. The class should be called "Random Useless Math 107." Don't take this class if you plan to transfer to a university, because it won't transfer!
I took this class knowing I would be bored out of my mind, and I was right. The math is very easy, but the work is incredibly tedious. If you do not write out every grueling step as you go, you're not going to pass. She is a picky grader and will dock points if you do not do everything exactly as she wants it written.
She's really sweet, but I had to drop the class because it was too difficult. Math90. Really easy stuff, just needed a refresher. She wouldn't allow us to ever use a calculator. Prime numbers, everything like that, all by hand math. Lots of homework, she goes really quickly, and she doesn't explain that well
She was horrible. I had a lot of things going on at home but I would check in with her to tell her when I was going to be absent. (She gives out quizzes on thursdays for over the weekend) I would message her asking for the quiz PDF, and she would set me up to fail by waiting till the very last minute to give it to me. Shes very picky when grading.
She was a good teacher, although I remember her specifically saying during class that she marks us down only because she wants us to "fully understand the problem" although getting marked down for forgetting to put a comma in 2,000 is ridiculous in my opinion. You have to put in a good amount of work for a good grade, but that's how school works.
I would NOT take this class again. I personally like more one on one talks with my teacher but i didnt get that and when i did (the few times) i was uncomfortable. The pace was set to over drive and so much was jam packed in it made it so difficult to take your time with things. If you take her, you better spend everyday in the math center.
Math 107 feels like a useless course. Hoagland herself is very abrasive and will often contradict herself regarding her own classroom procedures. Material isn't difficult at all but she will take points off for ridiculous reasons. She was not understanding of students who had other responsibilities like work or kids. Working with her is frustrating
Math 107 is honestly not worth it in my opinion. I left knowing nothing I didn't already know, just explained in a different way. Hoagland grades very strictly, even on the littlest things. Going to class felt like a chore, not a learning experience. Would not recommend if you're looking for a nice, laid-back professor.
