Very intelligent and nice. Tends to think students are smarter than they really are :) Well dresser, cute!
Very sweet and intelligent. Very precise in expectations of students. Strict with attendance. She does lectures and activities almost everyday, so take loads of notes because they come in handy for the quizzes and tests. She usually expect students to remember exactly everything she talked about. She also doesn't review for quizzes.
Learn shorthand before you take her class!! (Really.) Also, while she is super helpful and available, she is also AWFUL about getting stuff done in a timely manner - The last of my professors (by weeks) to post her required materials list. Shopping sucked since I just had to hope the book would be available used. VERY slow getting assignments back.
Just have to do all the work for the grade. Listen, take notes, and read everyday to get a decent grade.
She gives a lot of homework. But she is a good teacher
She had us join a Google group, where she would upload all the slideshows for review- this was an EXCELLENT way to review for tests, because she didnt do a lot of that in class. She was always available till 3 or 4 in the afternoon for question, clarification, or if you needed an emergency "God, Im stressed" relief session.
Kayleen was a nice person, and was a fun professor to discuss topics with. She does require ALL assignments done, and if you're sick or have to miss something, I recommend calling ahead ASAP to reschedule/get missed quizzes/assignments. Nice professor but strict on rules. She actually DOES expect you to follow her expectaions noted on the syllabus.
She was a wonderful and understanding instructor. I really enjoyed the class. However, she does require the work to be done on time and is strict on attendance. Very interesting subject matter...
Very difficult class.Avoid if you need good grade!
Her personality is nice and kind. but she is not nice at grading.
This class was excellent! I've recommended it to many, and will continue to recommend. Not only was it an interesting class, but Prof. Oka is a wonderful teacher. She clearly explains her expectations on her syllabus. There is a lot of work, but it is all relative. No busy work. She presents her lectures as powerpoints, posted online to help study!
I really liked her, but it was hard class. Actually there were a lot of things that I had to work. but she helped as much as she could. Even though it was hard class, I recommend to take this class if you want to learn something about sociology.
I just love her. Simply the best teacher I've ever had. Her class is helpful, her teaching method is excellent, and her class is actually interesting! I learned so much from her class. This class will be worth every penny of you tuition fee.
Had her for Intro to Soc and Race/Ethnicity in the US. Expect to work hard in her classes- so if you like to slack, this isnt your professor. Syllabus is expected to be referenced throughout the quarter. She expects you to DO EVERYTHING, but if YOU GO TO HER with a problem, she will bend over backwards to help you out. Take advantage of that!
Amazing Professor. Knows her stuff.
If you want a professor who is knowledgable in the field of Sociology, I recommend you to holla a this class. Her lectures are life changing and eye openers. You will leave the class with a broader perspective of life and how our society has impacted our lives.
Very lenient. You can easily get close to full mark for all assignments. Textbooks are rarely used, as her teaching is more than sufficient. 50 extra points are offered throughout the quarter, that is out of total of 1000 points. She sometimes bring snacks to class so students don't get bored. In her class, you get both to learn and an easy 4.0
I took her online class and it was brutal. I DO NOT AND WOULD not RECOMMEND to take her online class. She has alot of readings and homework throughout the week. As I felt like she was the only class that I studied the most compare to my other 2 classes that I took at evening classes.
I really enjoyed taking an online course SOC 101 with Dr. Oka. She is highly knowledgeable, has a great sense of humor and an outgoing personality. She is very approachable and always has answers to your questions. All she requires you to do is STUDY! AMAZING PROFESSOR!
She is a good teacher. that's all i can say!
We did a crossdiscipline project with an English class about environmental issues with water. Not only was she a fascinating lecturer, but she brought up a lot of interesting issues about our planet today. I did not find it particularly challenging if you just follow her instructions. I would recommend this class to ppl interested in current issues
Excellent soc teacher! She's very kind and helpful! Take her class if you are willing to open your eyes to the real world. Be ready to work and itll be fine!!!
I can see why people like her, but I wouldn't take her again.
Probably one of my favorite professors and favorite classes I have ever taken. I think everyone should take sociology of race. It is an amazing class. It is not the easiest class but if you just go to class, take notes, and do the readings, you will pass with at least a B. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR!
She is the best of the best! I love her class. Really helpful especially with international student. Inspiring and Friendly. She is willing to listen and help you out. Super cute with great sense of humor. Great knowledge. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Take her class and you will love her!
She is a really easy professor! We didn't need a text book, only a short book and a packet of articles. There were no midterms or final. Our final was to do a group project. Her homework is just basically read and respond on the Angel Website. Very easy and interesting! I loved her class and would definitely recommend it.
BEST TEACHER YOU WILL EVER HAVE!
I loved this class i would love to take another class from her shes very nice and knows her stuff my favorite class last quarter !
Ms. Oka is a great professor -she is completely clear in what she expects from her students which makes it all the more easy to do the assignments well. Her course is extremely organized, allowing students to be able to actually learn. I wish I could take more courses with her!
Kayleen is great. No textbook is usually necessary for her class and all the texts you will need she will give out, or will be online. Always has good lectures that she shows through slide shows, and the discussions that follow are always entertaining. I'm very glad I took this class and I would recommend it to everyone else.
I LOVE KAYLEEN ! she's the greatest teacher ever. I would recommend her to anyone.
Kayleen is BY FAR the best professor I've ever had. She's the one that inspired me to major in sociology. She respects her student, covers controversial material well and clearly loves teaching. She is an amazing teacher and very sweet person! I still keep in touch. I'd recommend her class to anyone.
Kayleen is an incredible teacher. She knows what she's covering, is clear, and is engaging with her students. I loved taking her class and look forward to taking more with her. HIGHLY recommended!
By far the most interactive class I've ever taken in college. Attendance was imperative due to the number of class discussions and activities we had. The class was cohesive and interesting. Grading was harsher than my other classes, but all of the assignments were relevant and added to the course material.
The best.
Kayleen is one of the best professors I've ever had! She is able to make a potentially boring subject interesting with her dynamic teaching style and fun projects. Loved this class. I would definitely recomend taking sociology from her.
Professor Kayleen is so nice! She's patient, kind, attentive, caring, and so much help. She makes sure her students have an open mind to what is going on in the world. I wish there were more people in the world like her. I highly recommend you take any class you can with her.
Did not learn much as expected.it 's really hard to get 4.0
Such a great class! I learned a lot about Asian Americans! I will miss this class, I really enjoyed it and all the new friends that I made. it was a lot of fun! Professor Oka is by far one of the best teachers here at SCCC, she assigns a lot of homework but they are not hard. As long as you read the material and do your work, you will get a 4.0!
We don't use textbooks rather we have readings in a packet. Anyways, this is the best class I've took in Seattle Central. I was always looking forward to class and I learnt way more than I've thought I would! If you have the opportunity to take this class, take it! I strongly suggest it!
Professor Oka is the best teacher ever. She is intellectual when it comes to her lectures. Assignments are very entertaining and educational. Always there to help her students whenever we needed her. She is very cute and has a great personality. I would recommend her class to anyone and everyone.
Professor Oka provided a beautifully designed course which was quite labor intensive. There was a good amount of reading and many, many medium-sized assignments throughout the entire quarter alongside bigger projects. She was the most particular instructor I've had on grading. I really had to work at this class.
Kayleen expects a good deal from her students, but not without reason. Connected knowers, initially, are very tedious, but they have improved my writing ability greatly. I feel like I have learned a lot from her course on social problems!
Oka is amazing!!! Super informative and holds attention well. Loved her class.
Kayleen is one of first professor at SCC and she is really helpful. Her class may not be easy but she designs her course really neat and well. I would love to take her class again.
Race & Ethnic Relations with Oka is one of the best classes I've taken at SCC. Great readings, assignments, and lectures. Big group project a bummer unless you like getting credit for others' work... Still I'd recommend this class to anyone. Sometimes lets students go off on stupid tangents. Challenging but not hard for the sake of being hard.
One of the most interesting, fun, and engaging classes I've taken at SCC. Taking her class helped me figure out what it is that I want to do with my life. Everyone should take this class! It will change your perspective.
fun class
This class will be very easy if you pay attention love this teacher!
If your majoir is Sociology, you should definetly take her class. She always prepares lecture before the class. If you want to get more feedback from her about your homeworks, you can talk to her after class or make an appointment with her. She is willing to aid students to achieve good grade.
She's great, you have a discussion due on wkends and one assignment per week. There were only two quizzes. Some people say she's a hard grader but that's only if you don't cite. If you cite the reading and her lectures you'll get a great score. Not one of our class readings was boring, she provided us a PDF textbook. I'm really thankful to save $!
One of the most inspiring professors. She is so passionate about teaching and it's truly inspiring. She doesn't believe in tests which is awesome. Her lectures and articles are so engaging. I would recommend this class specifically because it's made me look life in a whole different light.
She is great!
Feels like an english class, alot of writting. If you are a creative person and loves to write her class is really fun. No exams/quizzes just alot of papers due. Not an esay 4.0 you really have to work for it especially if you are taking this class online. Do not skip any assigment, even just one will have a big impact on your grade.
She gives out a bit of reading for each week. As long as you keep up with the reading every week then it wont be overwhelming.
She is a terrible communicator. Since this was an online class, that is key to the success of each student. When she bothers to finally answer your email, she is vague, and often rude. I am a 4.0 student, but I dropped her class because she was just worthless and wasted my time.
To be my elective I thought it was gonna be fun since I love talking about societies and such but I've had more homework in this class each week than my English and web design classes combined. She most likely feels some type of way and knows people take it as an elective so she's doing everything to not make it a breeze for us. Annoying.
I did put effort into this class, it wasnt an easy 4.0. She can be a tough grader but its for the best of her students, she pushes them their full potential. She is an amazing instructor, I learned so much from Soc 101.. If you are willing to work this class and learn, you will love this class!
Hello, for my last semester of Seattle Central I decided to take Sociology. Professor Oka is outstanding, I was surprised how fast she responded & graded. Yes this course required a lot of attention and contains many assignments but if you read the online text , everything will be okay . She challenges students but she believes you can all do it .
This class was challenging. You have to read one or two chapters a week, watch a lecture or video/s, and write every week. It was very interesting. The teacher gives feedback and make the class very easy to engage. I would take a class with her again!
Loved this class. So relative to all us humans. All media used was very helpful and interesting. Very useful feedback from the professor. Writings seem scary at first but are easy as long as you read the material and watch the videos. She is available to chat on zoom if needed. Weekly summaries are well thought out and a good wrap to the week.
I don't know how people would give this class a bad review. Two assignments a week and no tests or quizzes. If you enjoy writing like me, you will have no problem getting a 4.0.
I have no idea how she has so many good reviews lol I am a 4.0 student in a Bachelors program & took her course as an elective. The amount of homework she assigns is insane. LONG chapter readings, a million videos, AND weekly group meetings for a book club outside of class that you have to record. DO NO take if you work or have a heavy class load.
She's really trying too hard and doing the most for no reason. I'd understand if this was an upper-division class but it's not, it's a beginner-level elective class. The amount of work is unnecessary for this class level and she's picky about grading.
She's awesome, truly cares about her students.
If you take this class, any date you see on an assignment, pretend its not there. Inside of the assignment there will be things due days ago. Group work is used and implemented poorly. While I really liked the resources she gave us, the discussion and writing never required me to do the weekly readings. Papers were like why is racism bad or good?
Favorite class! This class was based mainly on two assignments per week which both consists of writing. If you like you write this class should go by fast for you. Overall this class wasn’t too stressful, 10/10 recommend.
Dr. Oka is a great professor - she has high expectations for the students in her class, but she is a fair and compassionate person who is always willing to work with you if you're struggling. I genuinely enjoyed her class and learned more because of her.
If your looking to really learn and be well respected while taking an amazing class then Kayleen Oka is the instructor for you. She is super respectful, understands that you have a life outside of school and really works with you as long as you put in effort and really try. I recommend 100%!!!
Gave lots of really good feedback. Did "ungraded grading" for most work (not for the regular discussion posts) where she would give just feedback, no grade, so in the final you partially grade yourself? I was skeptical at first but she does give really in depth feedback so it was fine with me. Prepare to get good at skimming. Glad I took the class.
Professor Oka was very friendly and accessible outside of class, the TA was also great. Class was mostly reading and posting in discussion groups, and a short paper most weeks. Read the prompts carefully and answer each question, and it's easy to meet the length requirements. She's flexible about deadlines and the material is really interesting!
I took SOC101 as an elective w/ Kayleen Oka. She provides no # grade, the student refers to feedback to see where they need improvement. I found this helpful. She's available through message outside of class and is responsive. Kayleen Oka inspires self reflection and critical thinking that is essential for anyone going into a field assisting others
She is a tough grader and is not afraid to take marks off for small mistakes, but she is also very understanding and gives good feedback. If you take her purely online like I did I recommend meeting with her in person if you can to answer any questions, she is very nice and helpful.
I had her in two classes years ago. 15 years later, when I think of my Bachelor's and Master's Program, she was the greatest teacher. I learned so much from her and the Connected Knowers. I recently moved, and went through all my old college files, and I use so much today in my work as a LICSW that I learned from her. Top notch Educator!
This class made me feel very stressed. One of the hardest parts is not being able to see my grade percentage throughout the quarter. It's hard to know how well I'm doing, which gives me anxiety. There are also no extra credit opportunities, so if you make a mistake, it's hard to recover your grade.
I took an online async SOC101 class taught by Prof Oka, who quickly became one of my favorite instructors at SCC. She clearly cares about her students and making sociology easy to learn. Her ungrading method took a little while to get used to, but it definitely reduced my stress in the course. My only complaint was that this class wasn't in person!
By far my favorite professor at Central. I took two of her courses in person and in both of them she has shown consistent compassion and interest in her students' success. She utilizes ungrading and gives excellent feedback. There is a lot of reading that she assigns and her projects can be challenging at times but she's always willing to help.
She should improve her ways of teaching by not so much heavy reading instructions. The textbook is really hard to understand.
Its going to be harder in summer because not enough time and this teacher rush us. She doesn't accept late work.
She did not want to help me with what I needed help on and stress about. She kept silent.
This class was extremely difficult for me. I often felt weak, shaky, and almost like I would pass out from the stress. The material was challenging, and I felt like the professor barely provided help with the schoolwork when I needed it. I wish there had been more support and guidance.
She runs a structured class with high expectations, but she always makes herself available to students for support. Her unique grading system, which uses “complete and incomplete allows students to focus on their work rather than a grade. The feedback-driven approach helped me grow as a student. I highly recommend her class.
This was my first online class. She was understanding of this and helped me through any unknowns I had. She is willing to work with you when life gets in the way. She is available throughout the quarter for students – even in the evenings! She makes her classes both fun and engaging. Anyone who has the opportunity to learn from her is very lucky.
She's a really bad professor. She knows who this is.
I had Dr. Oka for 2 classes at SCC. Her workloads are intense but productive and impactful for academic growth. I had to focus on time management for her classes which has helped me in my personal/professional life. I am the type of student who emails professors constantly. Dr. Oka is responsive, thorough and friendly every time, excellent overall.
