Professer Sevi is the best. She is really funny and has alot of knowledge about writing. She will improve your skills; don't think she'll be easy though. She makes class fun and interesting.
Grades extremely hard
Grades ridiculously hard
A very challenging class.
I did good in all other assignments BUT the essays screwed me over because she subjectively grades every bit of it! I DO NOT RECOMMEND HER CLASS!! She can be rude when you ask a question and makes you look like an idiot!I Disliked this class/professor!4 essays plus mid-term and final essay,6 Writing assignments, 3 essay reflections, and Journals.
shes super nice and helpful if you do the work. she is very professional. pay attention and you'll learn, and just do the work and you'll be fine. i also learned a lot from her class
she sucks grades super hard and is very subjective on essays for which the prompt on is very blunt.
Make sure you remember everything you learned in Eng 100. SUPER tough grader! A LOT (and i mean ALOT) of essays 4 plus 5 mini argument essays. show up on time with books and required reading or you will be asked to leave class
Do not get intimidated by how she sounds on her syllabus. She is actually a very sweet. However she does come with a problem. SHE IS A TOUGH GRADER. She expects you to keep track of your own grades. She can give you nasty looks too if you are doing something wrong. For those who usually cruise through English, here is my open challenge to you.
This would have been a wonderful class if I was an English major... I did enjoy some of the reading and I feel writing is my strong-suit but it proved difficult for even this "entry" level, 101 course. She is definitely knowledgeable and will test your ability to CRITICALLY THINK!
Tough grader, but ever since taking this class I've gotten a new view on how I read and watch movies. Really a fantastic skill to have. This isn't an easy class, but if you e-mail her some of your essay she will go over it and help you with it. Don't take this class if any criticism hurts your feelings.
I got an A in this class but I had to fight and claw my way for it. She has to be one of the tougher WR 1 Professors. You should expect a lot of homework and reading. I had to really think critically in this class to pass this course. My "A" was put on the line every single assignment. She's helpful but it's all up to you to get the grade.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She doesn't deserve the title of "professor". Easily one of the worst English teachers I've ever met. Pretentious, snobby, unhelpful-- she clearly doesn't care about her students.
She's smart and very knowledgeable; the readings and writings are all carefully chosen to make the subjects as easy and interesting as possible. Class participation is crucial, if you don't speak up it's not worth going. Everything she expects in the writing assn. is spelled out in the syllabus: if you write to that you will be fine.
-Please read both text books they will help -Be in class and come early to start writing your daily paragraphs about the text you read last night -Participate ! -Go to torturing and its extra credit -Annotate your readings -Pay attention to the readings and what other students have to say about the text and write it down
Crazy amount of work for a non-English major class, at least that is my opinion. Try to find an easier option if you don't want to work that hard, if you do want a great instructor that requires you to think, then take this class
She is a super tough grader, but she is fair. She knows the reading very well, so don't just sparknote your readings or find the summaries to it. Particpate as much as possible with input that actually can generate class discussion, not just so you have something to say.
This class by far was the most stressful. "Professor" Sevi is not very helpful, not welcoming, and dismissive when you meet with her to ask questions about assignments and will only send you to the Success Center. She did not give positive feedback and is not someone who knows how to be a good teacher. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Very condescending. Doesn't care about personal issues and if she does not like you, you will know. If you can avoid it, take another professor. I recommend Evans. He's worth the wait.
literally the worst and meanest professor I've ever had at OCC. DO NOT REGISTER FOR HER.
She's tough grader and participation matters. She is fair though and very open and willing to help.
The readings are fine. The essays are short, but she is a hard grader and unclear in what she wants. I would not take her.
She is a tough grader. She acts as if she is willing to help you if you need it, but if you actually take her up on this offer she won't be helpful at all. She answeres your questions by turning the question around. You are graded on 100 pts. That's it. No more, no less. you are required to write a notecard daily and if you don't you get -.5 pts.
DON'T TAKE HER IF ENGLISH NOT YOUR FIRST LANGUAGE. You really have to participate a lot in class and have to know your readings well. Therefore, if speaking is not your thing and you are shy, then this class is not for you. I got A's for English during my high school years and got a C- for her class. WOULDN'T RECOMMEND ANY OF YOU TAKING HER.
Sevi was extremely vague in her prompts, which doesn't make sense why she is such a hard grader. If you want to pass, go to her office hours and talk to her about your essay ideas. Oh and make sure you have a list of ideas because she will definitely knock a lot of them down.
Kayleigh Sevi is one of the most caring professors that I've had at orange coast college. She is always willing to help with essays and if you show that you care about the class, you will get the appropriate grade. She is so intelligent and always leads great discussions. I would take her class again any time.
She is incredible. I have taken multiple classes of hers and each one gets better and better. She is a very tough grader and very tough on her students BUT you will actually learn something from her. She is always available for extra help in and outside of class and is always willing to help.
Professor Sevi is by far the worst teacher I've ever had! I've done well in English before taking her class, and was confident in my abilities to write an essay until i took her class. When i asked for help she was dismissive and didn't seem to care that to help. I failed her class, but passed it with another teacher with a B. DON'T TAKE HER!
Professor Sevi, though strict in her grading and standards, is an entirely reasonable person who believes in the idea that you get what you earn. All it takes to pass is an understanding of the concepts and a willingness to properly incorporate them into your papers. She is also very helpful in her office hours and will make sure you understand.
Very fair teacher. She is clear about what she expects. The homework she assigns is very manageable- normally one annotated article a night, one chapter from our textbook. If you do your work and you're respectful this class is super fun and engaging. One of the best English teachers I've had.
Prof. Sevi is great. Her assignments are very reasonable and she is very clear about what she wants. Do what you're supposed to do and If you need help go to her office hours. However, if you want an easy A take someone else. You'll have to do some actual reading, writing, and participating if you want to get a good grade in this class . GASP!
Kayleigh is easily the toughest grader I've had, but I see that mostly as a positive thing so long as students are ready to put in sincere work and don't mind being humbled. She is very engaged and passionate about literature, and that quality contributes to the success of her socratic seminars. Participate, work hard, and follow the prompts.
First impression is that she is very intimidating But beyond that she is a very good teacher and thorough at what she does. I definitely learned how to write great essay. She also chooses really interesting articles for us to read and work load isn't very intensive. Attendance is important. All in all not an easy A but its doable !
I took Prof. S's ENG100 & 101 & got a B both times. If you're lazy & don't like doing assignments, going to class or paying attention you, shouldn't take this class. I don't like reading, but enjoyed all of the required readings for both classes. She's a fair grader, gives good feedback & is available for extra help during office hours.
I think Sevi is a fair and good teacher. I think her class can be an easy A if you put in the work, and get lots of feedback from her. I dont think she is an unfair grader, but dont expect to get a good grade on an easy that doesnt meet her SPECIFIC criteria. I enjoyed her and thought she was funny, and cared about her students.
Sevi is my favorite professor I have had at OCC! I enjoyed her so much that I dropped one of my other classes and signed up for two of her classes in one semester. She's a tough grader, but she lays out exactly how she wants her papers to be written and gives good feedback as well, so that your success in ensured. I would definitely take her again!
alot of homework. she checks on everything every class. alot of reading if you want to pass english 100 dont take her.
Professor sevi expressed her anti religion on multiple occasions. Whether she conveyed to us about her horrible past of catholic upbringing or in her text that she chose such as poems about god not caring for humans or cain. Although one may see this as a normality, we're not in a political science class, or a religious studies class.
There are many papers to write.
Professor Sevi is a pretty rad teacher, she is very intelligent, has a dry sense of humor but does not put up with nonsense. She wants her students to do well but will not do the work for you. I had a great experience with her and will take her for critical thinking.
She can come across as a tough professor but I believe she is one of the best professor at OCC. She gives me a detailed feedback and I could tell that she knew what she was doing. As long as you do your work on time and pay attention to her feedback everyone can pass with at least a solid B.
Tough grader. Hard on students. Even when you show up everyday and do the assignments, she makes it difficult to enjoy. I was hoping to get an English teacher who would help me become a better writer so I can be more successful in college. She did not teach me how, and was overly critical on essays and papers. Find another teacher.
Probably one of the worst teachers to take at OCC--her guidelines for essays are always vague and if you haven't previously taken any of her classes, it's likely that she won't like your essays very much. Her feedback makes no sense--I went to her office hours a bunch to get some guidance and I did what she said but it never seemed to satisfy her.
I coasted through her class with minimal effort and got a sold B. It's not that hard. If you get a bad grade, then you're the one that needs to improve. Don't blame your failure on a teacher, just learn from it and get better. Sevi is a funny professor and she makes sure her students have what they need to succeed, but she won't do the work for you
Great critical thinking teacher! Most of the reading are very interesting and she makes them very easy to understand. You are required to show up to class and do the work.
Not a fan of her lecture-heavy, extremely opinionated classes. She treats you like youre beneath her. I would never recommend a mean professor like this. Im surprised so many people gave her a good rating. Most boring class Ive ever taken, and I never missed a class.
This class definitely taught me to be a better writer. There are at least 6-15 pages of reading before every class followed by an in-depth analysis using different theories & literary terms. It was very tiring, and I was never able to get above a 90 on a paper even if I spent 13+ hours on it. Definentally a very nice teacher, just a lot of work.
By far the worst teacher ive had at OCC. Extremely tough grader, the readings are awful, feedback is awful. Even if you do all your work and really try its still hard to get a passing grade. Would not recommend.
No doubt one of the worst professors at OCC. She is not helpful at all, her grading is ridiculous no. No matter how hard you really try and get help it is still hard to get a good grade in the essays. The readings are awful. Would never recommend taking a class with her.
Though she's a really nice chick, her lecture tone and class involvement is pretty bad. I struggled not to fall asleep most of the time and i'm pretty sure most of my classmates felt the same. the class is definitely passable but for english especially i'd pick someone else next time.
She gets off topic too much and often has an attitude when you ask her questions. Also really tough when it comes to grading. I dont recommend her at all.
makes you question your writing abilities, very conservative in terms of feedback/grading standards, does push you to be a better writer but at the cost of questioning yourself constantly, lectures are based on student discussion, flipped learning/teaching method, class definitely prepares you for university level work
Not my favorite
Tough grader, but if you follow directly what she is asking you will receive a good grade.
Prof Sevi is not an easier grader but her grading is clearly logical. She teaches you all the skills you need to do well in her class and as long as you put in the effort you will get a good grade. She does not baby you but she will definitely make you a better writer. Participate in class, go to office hours, follow the rubric and you'll be fine.
10/10, took two of her classes and I'll probably take another if I can! I'll take some of the things I learned from her with me for the rest of my life. Really great, fun, and understood a good workload but expected you to care about her class. Lots of reading but they are so engaging and worth the read! :)
Great professor, very much available if you need any help. Very detailed and clear feed back on writing as well.
super strict teacher but lectures were clear and concise! very heavy on readings and daily hw!!! so many essays too
There are so many readings to do. She also had us read about 6-12 pages and then analyze before every class. This class was the most stressful class I have taken.
She's a tough grader, but has definitely made me rethink my own writing style and how to argue in writing. Her lectures are very insightful and every reading given is interesting and fun. She's very open to different interpretations of writings, even if she doesn't necessarily agree. She also has an amazing and witty dry humor which keeps class fun
I really enjoyed taking this class. Papers are difficult, but the discussions in class were fun and I looked forward to them. She is very funny and kind, and gives good feedback. She tells you exactly how to improve and get a good grade on her papers, and I would say she has made me a significantly better writer.
Professor Sevi is very logical in her grading and caring when it comes to students(reasonable) needs. Although there are multiple essays, she gives you a clear criteria to go off of based on what she wants. I heavily enjoyed going to class because I knew that the class discussions would be interesting and many times even funny. Couldn't rec. more.
This is the second semester I have taken Sevi. She makes the contents of what you read so interesting and funny. Use her guidance for your analysis-based writing and you will (mostly) always get good grades. As long as you're generating fairly out-of-the-box ideas, that is what she likes to see. She cares about you and wants you to succeed.
Teacher carries the class in a very opinionated direction. Teacher also openly admitted to being a communist alongside other students during one of our readings. Teacher allows profanity in the class such as the F bomb, which destroys the professional environment. Everything is left-wing and liberal oriented without acknowledgement of the other.
Teacher is an easy A if you come up with extremely unlikely analysis and nonsensical ideas. On multiple a papers I've gotten 4/4's or 4/4's on her grading scale for DAP's. If you pander to what you know she'll like you can get a good grade. It just costs you your own integrity.
Heavily gendered environment, overtones of overt gender politics. Like some of the other reviews here, she does allow swearing and does not promote a professional environment. Teachers like this make me worried for the future of students on all levels of academics. Her class will teach you next to nothing.
She always went to office hours but it seemed like she did not want to help me. It felt useless asking for help because she would never like any of your analysis. I participated in every class just to get a 7/10 for participation...
I took her for a mythology course, and though it didn't require her to teach us how to write, she taught me more than my ENG100 teacher could. Attendance is mandatory, but she makes it fun, and it doesn't feel like a chore to go to her class. She takes time to thoroughly answer questions from reading or about the essay. She was funny and clear :)
Every DAP (homework) I've ever done I questioned what she wanted from me. Every comment she made didn't justify the grade I was given. I thought I had good insight for a DAP and got a 1/4. Idk what she wants from me. I asked for help from her but she kept giving me the run-around instead of a clear answer. She made mythology stressful. AVOID HER!
Her classes are more casual and enjoyable than others. Shes funny, witty, and seems to genuinely enjoy class discussions. She gives great and thorough feedback on DAPs and comments made in-class. Participation really matters in this class and its not an easy A, but can be an easy B if you're decent at analyses. 10/10 would take another class w her
Does not care if you have a job. If you need to turn something in early she will not compromise or help. Quite rude and unhelpful.
Her DAPs do prepare you for the essays and she gives good feedback. However you must stay on top of your readings or you will fall behind. She is very clear and communicative.
If you want a class that really makes you think take Professor Sevi's class. The reading and amount of homework is reasonable, especially for a college level class and the exercises we did helped with writing essays. The in-class discussions were great, if you participate in class and do the work, you'll do well. Professor Sevi was excellent!
She's a tough grader but she gives plenty of good feedback so it's good for improving your writing. Talk in class discussions, it makes it a lot more fun. She's down to earth and straightforward in what she wants and what you do. The workload is reasonable. The hard part is analysis and really thinking. I think she's a fantastic professor
Her class is difficult but I truly feel like I improved as a writer. Very understanding and will help if you need it.
Abysmal, honestly.
So I've read the negative ratings here and I am seriously questioning if they were accidentally left on the wrong page and they are completely wrong! (Except of course for the feminist part of course) She is an amazing teacher who I definitely look forward to taking again next semester! PLEASE don't let these negative ratings scare you! Take her!!
Unaccommodating and unforgiving.
I've taken professor Sevi twice and it's because she's an amazing professor! her class on women writers opened my eyes so much, especially on feminist topics and books that I've never read. She gives a fair amount of homework and essays and is extremely kind and helpful! Her lectures and discussions are fun as well as educational. Take her class!
I really enjoyed Professor Sevi's class. The readings that she assigned were very interesting and allowed for thought-provoking discussions. She is a tough grader, but she is also very willing to help you improve your grade by having office hours after class. She is a great teacher and you will do well as long as you participate and put effort in.
I really enjoyed taking Professor Sevi's class, particularly the in class discussions we had. Attendance matters and will start to affect your participation grade! There were a lot of essays, but she left lots of feedback which you can use to improve. Take advantage of her office hours that is how I saw the most improvement in my essay scores.
Grade is mainly essay focused. Her feedback is essential to successful essays, and she can tell if an essay is bare minimum/AI generated. She really wants to see students succeed and construct logically sound arguments. I was more of an avid participator in class and was not producing nuanced essays.. oops Make time to develop and get feedback :^)
She is very fast-paced and does not offer space to consider the material. She is an extraverted thinker. Unfortunately, the class tone this sets discourages individual approaches to the text. She will grade you according to small-minded standards. If you have any misunderstandings with her, do not expect to be seen or spoken to with any warmth.
she's very unforgiving and not understanding at all. you have to do everything perfectly how she wants it to be.
Very passive-aggressive, negative, and indirect would degrade students. I dropped this course because I could not support a person who grades hard just because you are a "quiet kid". The best decision was to drop the course. I hope she reads these reviews and learns to do better as a professor.
English—next to math—terrified me so much I nearly dropped out before starting, due to social anxiety and weak writing skills. Professor Sevi made reading & writing empowering, not intimidating. Her early advocacy reshaped my path. As a recent CSUF grad, I still use what I learned their daily. She is a true gem that deserves her flowers, thank you!
(Took her for ENG 181, but it wasn't an option for me to choose) Professor Sevi is an absolute peach. I adored this class! She's incredibly witty, and the lectures were always incredibly engaging. The negative ratings are actual B.S—she is GREAT if you actually try. Her passion for Shakespeare really encouraged us to embrace his works too!
Professor Sevi is witty, intelligent, and has an incredible teaching style. Her close reading assignments have taught me how to extract information from a few lines and write effectively, a skill I will value forever. She cares about her students and is more than willing to help during office hours. She made Shakespeare approachable and engaging!
RUDE She EMBARRASSED me in front of the class for no reason other than to make herself feel better. Just another Pretentious English teacher who obviously doesn't know how to deal with adults. She belongs in a high school with that attitude.
too much to write down but she was the worst
A chore of a class. A mind numbing grind to listen to her talk. Gender politics infuse her lessons.
She was one of the best professors I've ever had. The negative reviews on here really show how unwilling to do anything fellow students are these days. She's super helpful when you actually ask for help too.
She is a very tough grader, be prepared to read closely and put in a lot of independent work. Expectations can feel rigid, come across as unwelcoming when students ask for help. Although she encourages attending office hours they don't help she.Overall, the class requires strong self-motivation and comfort working without much one on one support.
