Kazumi is so cute and good at teaching. She is the funniest little prof I've ever seen and her method for teaching intro physics was very good. She was very helpful in class as well as in office hours and was always willing to work with a student until they understood.
Really nice prof. tries hard to make sure everyone understands; great office hours. test were very fair!
Don't let her name fool you, her very minor accent is very easy to understand and her lectures were crystal clear. She also adds an element of humor to the class which seems to come naturally. The best part about her is her ability to help you outside of class. It's uncanny.
She's a very good teacher and will make sure that all your questions are answered. She respond to email quickly and attempt to answer you question with a full explanation online. Best teacher i had at UW so far. She's smart and funny.
Very good professor. Very helpful and very approachable
Very clear about her expectations for you on tests which were very straight forward. Meaning only one or 2 calculation steps per problem. Sometimes her explanations are shallow sticking to formulas and how to use them. Accent doesn't interfere with understanding.
She is one of the most dedicated professors I have met at UW. She stated a FULL HOUR after her official office hours to help a student who was having trouble. Incredibly flexible and genuinely wants to see you learn. Tests were semi-difficult, but nothing you aren't taught to handle. Awesome class, will look for her again.
Great Professor. Even after having mono for about 3 weeks, she excused clicker scores, and even spent over 2 hours with me reviewing before the final. My perceptions of her before the class began were unsatisfying, but after taking the course, she is one the better teachers I have had.
She is really a good teacher! She has been the best phys professor in my life. Explains concepts very clear and allows student have time to understand the concept. Very nice teacher!
Kazumi was a very amusing lecturer and she is very clear about what she expects you to learn. She gives hints on ehat to study for the exam and she is definetly willing to help with puzzling questions. Her lectures were fun and very organized. I highly recommend taking a class with her. - 4.0 for PHYS 123
She really likes to play tricky stuff on midterm, especially on the mutliple choice questions. The questions in her midterm seems easy, and you think you can get them right perfectly. However, when the score comes out, it really disappoints you. Phys 122 is actually not a hard class, but I do not like her midterms.
She's probably the most entertaining lecturer I've had in my four quarters here at UW. She finds ways to make electromagnetism easy to understand, fun, and interesting at the same time. Didn't think I would survive an 8:30 lecture this quarter but it was bearable with her teaching it. :) Definitely take physics with her!
Kazumi was a great teacher for Physics 122. The class is traditionally really tough, but she made it seem easier than it typically would be.
She is very clear in her lectures, and she always post lecture slides before hand. She is very helpful during office hours, and midterms are not too out of the blue. Overall, a great professor!
She made physics 122 *extremely* easy. I came in not confident at all and ended with a 3.9. Her exam questions are just like her clickers, and if you read the whole book and work through the examples you'll do great on the multiple choice and long answer. Tutorial for this class is horrible though.
She's funny in lectures and provides good help and good explanations. The tests are tough and some of the homework is too but if you go to lecture and the physics study center to ask questions you'll do fine.
Dr. Tolich is absolutely hilarious (funniest teacher I've had at the UW). Her tests are easy if you keep up with the work and do the homework. Physics comes easy for me so maybe the class was easier than it should have been. Overall she was a great professor and was extremely clear and entertaining.
Very nice lady with a great sense of humor. Can be confusing at times though. Tests are ezpz
Not a big fan of physics, but a big fan of Dr. Tolich. Really entertaining demonstrations and keeps the class fun. The tests can be rough, but are not impossible. I would take her for all three quarters if I could.
She was funny and entertaining. She made the material less boring but she was sometimes not quite clear and she moves fast. Also, her tests are hard.
Physics is not really my favorite course, but she is really nice and wants students to be successful in her class. She makes jokes every now and then, so the class is not boring and dry at all.
Dr. Tolich is hilarious. Her demos are really entertaining and overall she is very charming. Her tests are fairly easy if you practice the exams and assess what you need to know, but her examples and lectures can be a bit fast paced if you're a writer.
Professor Tolich is a fantastic teacher. She's available 2 hours a week at office hours, and really wants to help her students learn. Her lectures are interesting and fun, with an emphasis on active learning (with clickers, demos and examples in class). Definitely take Physics with Professor Tolich if you can!
We had two midterms, a final and online homework due every week. Her humor, her personality and lecture style are all so enjoyable. I couldn't think of any reasons why someone wouldn't like her. Study for your exams and know what is expected. i recommend taking her for algebra-based physics. I'm excited to have her for 115 as well.
I LOVE HER! Took her class during Fall quater and she was very helpful. She was also very organized so you wouldn't have any problem understanding the lectures as she explained it step by step. I don't know about other class but for this class, if you get more than 80/90% (I don't remember) for assignments and quizzes you'll get full mark for that!
Kazumi is one of the best professor at UW. I really enjoy her class and she is so humorous. She gave us a lot of demos and helped us understand what is going on here. Expert ta is needed to do homework, homework is easy. There are two midterms and one final. She really wants to help student. I want to continue taking PHYS116 with her!
Dr. Tolich was one of the best teachers I've had at UW. Her lecture notes are SO organized and easy to follow. She puts all the important equations on there so you don't really need the textbook. Gives plenty of demos and she works through examples step by step which helps solidify the material. She is pretty funny and really cares if you learn.
Tolich was one of the best teachers I've had at the UW. Her accent was easier to understand than her husbands (Nikolai) in general and her awkward humor was a delightful surprise. If I could take another physics class with her I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Excellent. Her lectures are well structured and are hugely entertaining. While she may have an accent, it does not affect her ability in articulating the concepts of the course. Definitely would recommend taking physics with her.
Tolich has been my favorite professor of the physics (12X) series. She is genuine and makes an effort to keep the material straight forward yet slightly entertaining. Examples from class pop up on exams and homework, so I highly recommend going to class.
Physics is a hard subject, but Tolich made it bearable with her entertaining lectures and sense of humor. The tests were actually pretty reasonable and if you work hard and DON'T fall behind on the material you'll do fine. The practice exams were actually super close to what the real test was like so make sure you nail the concepts on it.
Her explanations in class are poor and she is bad at identifying where students might be struggling. I have gone to her office hours and she sits on her laptop instead of readily circling around and helping students like I would expect someone to do during their office hours. She can be funny but that doesn't make up for her poor teaching style.
Entertaining lecturer and really great at explaining things one way, if you need further explanation, youll need to go elsewhere. Do all her additional problems and examples in lectures. Dont expect exams to reflect either of these though. Grades on a crazy curve so dont panic if your grade is low. A tutor is a good idea for this course.
Her lectures are very fast paced, but that's my only complaint. She's engaging and funny and really really cares! Don't be afraid to ask questions in class!!
Kazumi san is really nice. She is very funny and nice. But Physics is really hard here at uw and most importantly, this course's pace is so fast. There is not enough time for you to deeply understand a issue and then you are rushed to next one. However, Kazumi is really a nice prof. She kinda make the way to study physics funny and understandable.
Kazumi Tolich is one of the best professors I've had at UW. Her exams are more fair and conceptual than Daryl Pedigo, who required lots of calculator questions in his exams. In 121, I was disappointed and lost the motivation to take physics until I took her class. I highly recommend taking her course in any of the 12x physics series. Study hard!
The class itself is very hard, as the introductory physics courses at UW are known for being weed out, but Mrs. Tolich did her best to help with understanding the subject. Tests were on understanding concepts rather than calculations which is nice because it allows to access student's understanding rather than calculating abilities.
I didn't understand anything but somehow she makes the whole thing easy.
Shes so kind and does her best to make physics easy. Explains things very well and is PATIENT. do the homework and youll pass!! Tests are curved. Shes amazing and sweet. Look forward to having her again
Her class was tougher than other professors. That being said, she is a great teacher and very caring person. Hilarious during lectures. If you read the book, do the homework, and go to lectures, you can get 3.5 or higher. Exams are curved for obvious reasons but the difficulty of her exams is reasonable.
I have had Kazumi for two physics classes and she is by far one of the best professors at UW. She is like the physics Mary Pat: very conceptual and thinks the best way to learn is to practice. That being said, her tests are very reasonable and she presents all the concepts in easy-to-review ways. Also, shes got good jokes.
I'd say a great physics professor. However, depending on how good you are at physics determines the difficulty of the class. Her exams are more conceptual based than mathematical based so it was somewhat difficult for someone like me. However, that does not mean the questions are bad. Practicing the exams and office hours are great for success.
She is very enthusiastic and entertaining which makes lectures more enjoyable. However, you will have to work a lot outside of class because lectures are crammed with lots of information. Tests consist of multiple choice and two free response questions and are very similar to practice tests.
Dr. Tolich is an amazing professor! Her lectures are amusing and interactive. Everything you need to succeed in the class is provided to you during lectures. I found I could skip class and skim the lecture notes and still get all the content I needed. Dr. Tolich is available outside class and she's wonderful at answering any question thrown her way
As far as physics at UW goes she's great. She goes through explanations and into problems very fast so down blow through pre-lectures. Tests are very similar to her lecture problems, but with some sort of modification here or there making them pretty straightforward and predictable. Other than that, she's funny, friendly and does demos often
I dont know if I would call her hilarious, but she has kind of a quirky attitude/humor that keeps lectures entertaining. Her use of class time is efficient and actually really useful for learning the material. Get ready to participate even though its a lecture class, she cold calls. Also, dont think you can avoid it by sitting in the middle.
Physics is hard in my opinion no matter what, but I think she was the best professor I could have asked for. She provided plenty of practice problems as well as thorough explanations of concepts behind them. She seemed to really care about the students learning as well. The tests are pretty straightforward but still difficult.
Dr. Tolich is adorable and amazing, made me like physics as a non-STEM person. Her class is straight-forward and manageable as long as you actually read the textbook. That's the hardest part, I think, to succeeding in physics at UW: actually reading the textbook, since it's not really required but will make or break your grade.
I hate physics. But Prof Tolich is one of my favorite professors at UW. She really focuses on conceptual and visual learning, using demos to aid many of her lectures. She is hilarious and approachable. Tests are hard like any other stem weed out class, but Tolich is a great teacher and builds foundational knowledge well.
I don't like physics, but I really like Prof Tolich. Had to take this class remotely due to COVID but watching her recorded lectures made me almost wish I had taken it in-person. Her tests can be challenging but there's LOADS of practice for you to do and she graded the assignments & quizzes mostly on good faith effort.
I took Tolich remotely due to COVID, but I still think she's an excellent professor. Her modules were well organized and besides that her lectures were clear and understandable. During office hours, she helped clarify things and she just genuinely seemed like a charming and funny professor. Exams are difficult but doable with the material provided
Physics is a tricky subject but Kazumi is a wonderful professor for it. The feedback she gives in class to student's questions were clear and concise and her powerpoints made a lot of sense too. Only problem is sometimes the lectures could draw on, but that's more of a result of the subject rather than the professor herself.
Thought Kazumi would be ok from reviews, but not so. I'm not good at math so I asked for help. She didn't really care and was kind of rude. Her recorded lectures we great though but that was not the Kazumi I had. I wouldn't take again.
Worst professor Ive ever hard, she doesnt teach you anything and gives you quizzes before she even teaches you the material. DO NOT TAKE IT WILL WRECK YOUR GPA
For starters, all her lectures were just recorded from in-person classes, which felt lazy. Basic things we needed to learn, we're never really taught, which made advanced material harder. She never held anything synchronous and what drove me to drop out was the fact that she told us about a midterm, one day before it occurred.
Asynchronous online format is difficult to learn from- you read the material from a textbook, do a pre-lecture quiz, and then watch the lecture video where you answer quiz questions but they are scaled at the end so as long as you do them you can get 100%. Exams are tough bc you only get 60 minutes to answer 20 questions which is very little time
Literally worst professor Ive ever had, dont take this class if its online she doesnt teach you anything and the whole online format she uses seems very lazy on her end. She wont try to help you out at all and makes her exams as hard as possible, convinced she likes seeing other fail. It brings her joy
This was certainly a hard class, but it was well-organized. The tests were difficult but if you read the textbook, carefully watch the recorded lectures, and do lots of practice problems, it is fine. Professor Tolich was responsive if I had questions and the recorded lectures were good.
Didnt post a single non recorded lecture, felt lazy. Tests were basically impossible I think I only did okay because of good guessing.. a really soul crushing class. She seemed great in her recorded lectures but that was not the professor I experienced. Avoid her online
She was okay tbh. The only complaint I had about her was that she made the 2nd exam super hard but other than that she's alright.
She ignores students emails, dismisses students concerns, makes lame excuses for her terribly designed course. Maybe this is different in person but unfortunately online she puts nearly no effort into her class, and doesnt actually do anything to teach it. This class was the most miserable call Ive ever taken, when it really didnt need to be.
Professor Tolich gave us recorded lectures to watch from a few years ago, all of which were recorded from the back of the class so you cant see whats on the whiteboard or the presentations shes doing. Most of my class struggled and when we asked for help (about 50 people signed a note to her) we only received excuses.
Tests are nothing like the lectures or practice exams. Lectures are recorded from years ago and demonstrations are not easy to see since the camera is in the back of the class. Lectures are easy enough to understand but exams are hell. Good luck to anyone taking this class.
The whole class is: read text, do quiz, lecture. You should watch the recorded lectures to do the lecture quizzes, but otherwise they're pretty useless. The second midterm is brutal because so much time is wasted teaching the easy chapters that we don't get enough time for the harder ones where they suddenly dump a bunch of new concepts.
Tolich's lectures are from 2014-2015 so already the class structure feels very lazy, the lectures and practice problems are too easy and the practice exams are nowhere near the actual exams. Exam 2 was impossible to complete without guessing. She even sent an announcement to the class saying "we know exam 2 was harder than we expected". unrealistic
Exams are extremely hard. If Newton took the exams, he wouldn't be able to pass. Don't be fooled by easy practice exams, quizzes, HW problems, lecture. It just doesn't help. I regret taking her and do not let the good ratings on this site fool you. Difficulty on exam feels like being taught whats 1+1 and the exam asking u to solve derivatives.
Her lectures were recordings from a long time ago, and for the most part, she just read off the solutions that she wrote on the slides. The stuff on Mylab and Mastering was easy and the questions she went through during the lectures made sense, but her exams were ridiculously hard. She's an okay person, but NOT a great professor.
This was the hardest class Ive ever taken ever. I really think Kazumi Tolich is a great person but teaching this class online. I dont know how to describe it. She uses lectures from a few years ago and doesnt really explain through them much, just says the answer and moves on. Also the textbook is so hard to understand and doesnt really help.
good person but cant teach.
Tolich is very knowledgeable on the material and gives great examples of problems. However, she is not very good at teaching. She glosses over the material and expects you to know it for exams.
Tolich managed to remove any interest or excitement from studying physics. She barely teaches the class; lecture time mostly consisted of mandatory polls where she picks on random students in the lecture hall and tells them to explain their reasoning in front of the class. Almost all of my studying was on YouTube or from reading a dense textbook.
To clarify - PHYS 122 is a hard class with challenging content. Considering this, Tolich does her best to make lectures entertaining and informative. This is a textbook-reliant class, you need to read the textbook to contextualize the lectures. Tolich is great at answering students' questions nonjudgmentally and with humor.
One of the more difficult series offered here at UW, however Tolich does her best to teach you the content. Her lectures have quizzes that you answer in class, the content of which usually come up on the midterms and final. Overall it is a difficult class but if you work with the materials given to you by Tolich you can do well.
Cares about your learning and shows that through how she lectures. Physics series is very difficult but she made it a bit more tolerable. Requires a lot of time to get all of the assignments and labs and studying done. Cool experiments in class.
She's an alright professor, like the rest of the physics series, the professor doesn't really matter at all and it was the same as she didn't really make the class special
Best 1XX Physics Professor I had so I'd give a 5/5 compared to just about everyone else you could have. She's pretty funny and cares about the topic.
Kazumi was a decent teacher. Personally, 123 was a difficult class for me but I thought she did a good job explaining the subject. My biggest gripe is she wasn't able to explain things mathematically. And because I'm more of a math person, that didn't really help when I would approach her and she couldn't give me an answer to my questions.
I don't understand nothing in her syllabus and she has a thick accent. Can't understand her class
You're expected to know the material before class so the lecture doesn't cover much (it's mainly graded practice quizzes so you need to be there) This didn't work for me since I have no background knowledge in physics. I scored better than average on exams but still don't really understand anything lol. Also you need to calculate your own grade
The class in general was ok, but this is the most confusing class I ever had. Yes, you need to calculate your grade.2/3 of the class time we are just waiting for students to fill out in-class quizzes rather than doing practice. But her way of giving question seems more like riddle, you can understand physics but don't understand her question
She's a fine lecturer but I spent most of my time reading textbook and watching YouTube, her explanation on certain question is confusing, I went to office hour for serval times but found that wasn't very helpful
The class will be fine if you've taken physics before, it could be brutal if you haven't. Be sure to read all the assigned chapters of the textbook. She's a great lecturer, and exam problems are just like the ones in practice exams.
Curve was a blessing
Most of the learning was from the textbook; Prof. Tolich rushed through topics in lecture and spent most of the time reviewing practice problems. While she provided many practice problem sets, she could have explained concepts in more detail. Even though Tolich was just ok, PHYS 121 is difficult, so practice practice practice.
Great lecturer, used at least one visual application of physics per lecture to make class engaging. The textbook used in class was terrible and used much more complicated examples than the tests (I believe the textbook was chosen by the physics department). Overall, great personality and you'll do well in class if you put in the effort.
Lectures aren't great, mostly involve reading a powerpoint verbatim and answering learning catalytics questions (live quiz required for grade in each lecture). Class isn't hard if you took a physics class before or in highschool, but I think it would be hard to grasp the material if it was all brand new.
Big fan of her, cold calling is a lot less scary if you sit deep enough in the row. She teaches really well :)
Funny lectures, good explanations, and responsive. Issues with course were mainly about structure, but that is the department's fault. Would recommend.
Great professor, great introduction to physics in my first quarter here. Kazumi is funny and the lectures are easy to follow and very helpful. ~40% of the grade is free if you participate. The exams aren't too bad, lots of resources. The exam grading options can allow you to drop an exam that you didn't do well on.
Very caring professor, always available to help students. This was the most difficult class in the 11x series for me, but Dr. Tolich is an excellent instructor.
