horrible professor
No Comments
Funny guy, but the class is dreadful. Goes into the subject way too deep and expects you to know too much. Tests are very long and time consuming, usually not enough time to complete.
Yes, he's hard but he is helpful...wants his students to do well.
Great professor. If you have to take calculus, do yourself a favor and sign up for this guy.
Very fair - wants his students to do well. Yes his tests are hard, but they truly do prepare you for the next level. If you want easy, go for Dr. Denny.

VERY hard professor, had to drop his class, but recommend taking him though. His humor and presentation distracting. Don't get anything else out of class, get that math is more than just plugging in numbers.

Although I can't seem to find anyone that liked Dr. Hartfield's class, I enjoyed it very much. A very demanding teacher, Mr. Hartfield expects nothing but top work from his students and this is the way he conducts class. Mr. Hartfield is very funny.
I may be the only person in the world who thinks he's easy, but he is one of my favorite professors! I've taken him twice and done well both times, but I will say that I'm a math person, so others may not agree. He is hilarious and willing to help
He is hilarious but hard as crap
He isnt easy and he isnt hard. His jokes are funny at first but eventually, it gets old.

I had him for a lab class that was supposed to supplement the lecture. We would often be very far ahead of the lecture, yet he would still expect us to already know the material.
Studying is a must, study partner, and taking good notes. Going beyond the required work was expected. He is a good teacher and knows his stuff, but the test are on a higher level than the notes. His motives is to apply what you learned to other element.
THE MAN!
He is hard as heck and doesnt help in lab. He hands out the labs and walks off. Plus, he takes off points for incorrect grammar or abbreviations, so if you're not an english oriented math student (who is?) dont take him.
He is a funny teacher. You don't get spoon-fed anything in his class. You must take what you have learned in class, and be expected to approach it from every direction.
Explains everything, even the stuff my 191 professor didn't cover! Great teacher
Dr. Hartfield is excellent. I would talk all my math classes from him, if I could. He is hilarious and realy know the material he is teaching. If you need a good math teacher, he is the one.
He is a great professor and really knows how to teach. His jokes are halarious and will keep the class laughing all semester. Just one suggestion....don't miss class, he doesn't like that! Tests are moderately hard - the way they should be.
Dr. Hatfield is the best math teacher I have ever taken. He trys to relate all of the material to everyday by telling jokes so that you can understand better. I would take him again. He is very helpful inside and outside of class!
do not take his calc. class unless you got a pretty good understanding in high school. he does not the necessary amount of time to explain concepts yet he finds enough time to clown around and make students feel dumb. he ruined my exp. at mercer.
I took AP calc in highschool and didn't pass the AP exam. i should have taken it from hartfield in the first place, he explains everything well and really nails the concepts into you. people say he's hard, but he tells you exactly what will be on the tests...
This guy is aweful. I had a 760 on my math SAT and got a C+ in the class. Had an A in CAL 1 at Mercer too. His first tests are easy then after the drop date he makes them impossible. "You are about to enter mathematical hell" was the quote he gave us before our final.
Studentland!! Everywhere you go take your mathbook with ya!! Hartfield will challenge you in unexpected ways. He definately makes sure you know the material and he is very humerous. Get used to the first two statements at the top.
No clearity, Unfair grading standards. very poor teacher.
horrible, has no desire to help students or explain topics
Very good teacher. He's helpful and very good at explaining the material. The other students who say he is unhelpful are shall we say... challenged.
I took calc in highschool and made a 98, and I placed into calc II based on my SAT scores. I took precal for the "easy A" and made a C+. Only five of us showed up for the final. He finds ways to take off points just because he wants to. Horrible teacher, but he can drive a ford and a chevy :)
He is the greatest teacher. He explains very well and is always willing to help students. He breaks down the material very easily into terms you can understand and relate to. He is the best Math professor at Mercer University!
don't take makes math hard just to be hard
I THINK DR. HARTFIELD IS AN AWESOME TEACHER. THOSE SPOON FED STUDENTS, ARE USED TO PROFESSORS NOT CHALLENGING THEM. I AM NOT A MATH PERSON AND I AM DOING WELL IN HIS CLASS. HE IS VERY HELPFUL, AND WILL TAKE TIME OUT HIS DAY TO HELP YOU IF YOU ASK HIM. HE IS VERY CLEAR AND CONSISE IN HIS TEACINGS!
I think we're just sucking up because our final is tomorrow. He is good looking, funny, charming, wears a suit and tie every day, very classy. WE really enjoy his class, his tests are not easy, but he does explain every thing prior to the test. A wonderful professor. Love always, the ARC Crew :-)
If you're looking to make an easy A, don't take him.I suggest looking for someone else in the math department;however,if you want to learn the material and don't mind getting a C then take Hartfield. His test are hard and you will have to have a firm grasp on the material, but if you do the homework and visit him during office hours you will pass.
If you've taken pre-calculus in high school within the last year and did very well in it...prepare yourself for boredom. Yes, he does explain himself VERY well, but man do you just want to fall asleep listening to those two or three repetitive phrases...over and over and over again. Do the homework & ACTUALLY study for the tests...they are unique.
Maybe it was just because it was lab, but I hated his class! He would never help us and made us feel stupid for asking questions. Don't take him for lab!
Hard tests but a great lecturer, does not spend to much time on the abstract theories that are so boring.
I love Dr. Hartfield! He is a great professor- he explains everything very thoroughly and is always willing to help. He loves to be funny and makes the class about as fun as calculus can be. He is not nearly as hard as some of the other math professors. I will definately take him if I ever have to take another math!
he's the man
He is a great guy. Tests are moderately difficult, but if you practice problems, you will do fine. He will many times call on people who aren't paying attention. Talk to him like a person, not a professor and you'll find you will never be confused. Take him if you want to learn.
prob the best prof in the math department
Even though he is a hard teacher. He finds terrific ways to relate the material and short cuts to remember hard processes. I would take take him for math anyday of the week. (It doesn't hurt that his two daughters are absolutely FINE!!!!!!)
Hartfield is a great teacher. His test are NOT easy, he really cares about his students and is always willing to help. He even extended his office hours for us. He is very straight forward and honest with you. LISTEN TO WHAT HE TELLS YOU. Just study daily, do the homework and come during office hours and you'll be fine.
It's about time Dr. Hartfield got a smiley face!!! He is a great professor but his tests are hard if you're not smart enough to come to class. He will give hints as to what is important and possible test questions. He is pretty tough on his tests but he will give you extra credit. P.S. get old tests from the library and copy, they're almost twins.
He does everything he can to help you understand math. He is hilarious too. One complaint is that he goes way to slow. We were supposed to cover 6 chapters and we only covered 3. Majority of the class got an A.
I hadn't had calculus or pre-cal and got put in his class. I planned on dropping it but he told me to hang in there. HE IS HILARIOUS! Everyone needs to take his class or at least sit in on one before they graduate!! Love this man! Very helpful. I ended up with an A. GO TO CLASS and he'll tell you everything you need to know for his tests.
He was very easy to understand and he didn't move on until he knew we understood. His grading system makes it easy to get an awesome grade.
I have never been more entertained than I am in Dr. Hartfield's class (and I despise math!). He makes it difficult to fail the class, assuming you are doing the homework. I suggest everyone take Dr. Hartfield at least once - even if you don't need a math class!
Dr. Hartfield is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. Even though I got off to a rough start at the beginning of the semester, he helped me pull through and now I am going into MAT192 confidently.
While he may be a great math professor, Dr. Hartfield is awful at Senior Capstone. The way he grades participation is outrageous, and he seldom returns student work. Also, he grades papers really really harshly. Avoid his SCP class!
Coming from one who dreaded math since primary school I thought I was going to have a hard time in Hartfield's. And initially his first few tests will be hard but if you come to his office hours (which he LOVES) to ask for help on assignments, then you'll do just fine. Plus, he's by far one of the funniest profs that I have ever!!!
very funny, relates math to starwars. not harsh on being late.
Dr. Hartfield knows his material and is very helpful if you go to his office. Although, he likes to yell when he is lecturing and teaching and I had his class early in the morning so I found it very difficult to learn. His tests are pretty difficult but manageable if you stay on top on everything.
He is wonderful! Take him if you like to laugh during class! He tells lots of jokes (most that don't make any sense) but he is wonderful! His class is fairly easy but you have to work hard and be obedient! If you do not show initiative and enthusiasm then you are most likely to fail. TAKE HIM!
Extremely easy and entertaining class! I definitely recommend him for MAT 126!
Dr. Hartfield knows how to teach students math. I learned a lot in his class. His weakness as a professor is in the way he evaluates student's knowledge of the subject being taught. His class left me constantly disappointed and frustrated. His tests are not hard but they are hard to finish in the time alloted. Not worth the aggravation!
He teaches straight from the book, but his tests are nothing like what he teaches. Have a firm understanding of Pre-cal through cal 2 before his class. He will test on things that you're "supposed to know."
Professor makes you laugh, but his tests will make you cry. He is excellent for training math majors for graduate school, but if math isn't your major, you might consider taking someone else. He is very picky (no abbreviations, no spelling errors, proper punctuation, etc...yes this is a math class). Do all of the webwork, it will save your grade!
He can teach math, but his test are near impossible. He prepares you with the content but not for the time constraint. In order to pass, you have to be able to do the problems quickly and accurately.
Dr. Hartfield is a tough professor. He teaches very quickly and gives one or two examples only so pay attention. His tests are difficult but if you go to class and do ALL of the homework, you will be fully prepared. He yells in lecture but this shows he cares about your success and if you go to his office hours, he will appreciate your efforts.
Dr. Hartfield is a good professor. He will drop your lowest test grade, and count your final exam more, if it's higher than your test average. He's funny. He tells us what's going to be on the test, but you need to work pretty quickly on tests. FYI: He likes to pick on football players and people who have friends in class.
Dr. Hartfield really knows his stuff, but in my opinion doesn't always teach in a way that can make any student get it. If you think like he does, the class will not be hard for you. He teaches the material one way, the way HE thinks is easiest, and expects you to be able to answer questions HIS way. This just means you have to practice though.
If you even think of procrastinating in this class, you will get a C or lower. Showing up to class is mandatory; the more classes you miss, the lower your final grade will be. Dr. Hartfield's lectures are enjoyable, but intense; it's not dissimilar to a fire-and-brimstone sermon. It's a fun class, but very difficult. Enroll With Caution.
He is proud of his (approximately) 50% dropfail. He will ask you to leave office hours if you ask a "non-logical question." He mocks the students that he's going to have fun putting F's on all the tests. He, for the most part, taught what you needed, but didn't really explain why you do it. Whole grade rides on 4 tests and the exam for MAT 192
He loves math - especially calculus. He tries very hard to help students when he can, but a good understanding of pre-calculus is a must. He is very passionate about math. I took calculus I (191) and II (192) over the summer, and they were both a breeze. I suggest taking him over the summer from what I hear. My favorite professor at MU, so far.
Dr. Hartfield is a professor that definitely knows his stuff. He has high expectations and expects you to put 110% into his class - even if you have other classes to worry about. I had a hard class load when I took this class, and he knew that, so I put all the time and energy I had available into the class. It wasnt enough for him. Take caution.
My main complaint about Hartfield is that he teaches material s that you know what to do like steps: 1, 2, 3. That works for some people, but I like to UNDERSTAND the concepts, know why I'm doing what I'm doing. Overall though he is fair, and gives you plenty of opportunity to succeed. He will drop your lowest test-AWESOME. He's entertaining too.
Hartfield is definitely not a professor that will give you a grade you don't deserve. He will prepare you for your future math classes. I enjoyed it overall but there were some definite times when I wanted to quit and times where I cried.
Had Hartfield for MAT 192 and MAT 193. He expects us to know prerequisite material very well. For both classes, his tests were long, but fair. He does drop the lowest test grade, which does help the overall average. Hartfield does make fun of everybody in the class in order to make class pleasant. If you don't skip class, he bumps people up.
I missed like 1 class and was pretty much done for the semester. There was no way I was going to pass. He's very hard but very passionate and there for you. Just DO ALL YOUR HOMEWORK and ask him if you have any questions at all.
I have never had a teacher like Dr. Hartfield. While he is difficult and you must work hard, he is extremely approachable and offers help sessions every day. I usually couldn't make them due to work and he quickly offered to meet with me one on one whenever I could. Probably the best professor I have had in college.
Best teacher I've ever had. Had him for Calc 2 and Diff eq, and he is very tough, but he cares and is good at what he does. If you do all the homework he assigns, you shouldn't have a problem. You definitely have to work hard to do well.
Class is structures in a way that 80% of the lesson is auditory. being an auditory learner is key to his teaching style. Grading is very strict and tests are usually more than double the work of most other classes, but he lets you know what he expects. He jokes around a lot in class which is fun but makes his lectures harder to follow sometimes.
If you pay attention, do the homework, and study properly for the tests you will pass his class. He's always willing to offer help during his office hours, so be proactive with homework, and then go get help if you need it. He wants his students to understand the material, not just memorize it. He lessons are mainly examples, including web assign.
Hartfield is an awesome teacher! Attendance affects your grade! He really takes his time in explaining the material. He loves to crack jokes which keeps the lectures interesting. Hes a hard grader only because he wants you to fully understand topics. He puts answer keys for old tests in the library which makes for a great study guide for the final.
Awful professor. He'd come out better being a comedian because that seems to be the only thing he's good at.
Easily and absolutely both one of the best and most difficult professors at Mercer University. Great man, he will help you if you go to office hours. Exams are longs, you will do well IF you know the material like its the only thing you do.
Tricky Tricky Dr. Hartfield! This man will make you work for every point you get on every test you take, but if you want to learn Calc 2 the right way and never struggle again, I would recommend him.
He was very hard. Only take him if you are prepared to do the work!
KENDRICK. What a man. He's a hilarious guy with a dry sense of humor and a ridiculous set of expectations. Dr. Hartfield will tear you down in the classroom and in the grade book, but if you want to learn Calculus and aren't afraid of a challenge go for it. He's a professor I'll never forget and I'm thankful to have taken his class.
Great professor. My only complaint is he is not willing to work with you even if you have a medical reason. I was out of class for a month due to a concussion. I was only given one day to prepare for an exam on information I had never seen. He was not willing to work with me at all.
Buckle up. This man is a legend for his sayings alone. Might compile them into a book and sell it. With no grades aside from the exams, start studying for them yesterday. They will drain you mentally and physically quicker than the Macon heat. I averaged a 70 all semester but pulled out a B due to his weighting system. He's a lovable challenge.
Taken for summer credit. He's not employed to hold your hand through college and give you a passing grade. He's upfront with how hard he's going to be, and he follows through with his word. Yet, he loves mathematics and will teach you all he can if you want to learn. I'm trying to shuffle my schedule now for Spring to take him for MAT 192.
Huge tests but he puts answer keys after the test in the library, so you can always check what exactly you did wrong on the test. He has lots of office hours and teaches the material well! Make sure you read the book and make study groups to practice the material.
Dr. Hartfield gets bad feedback, but honestly his class was not that hard. The course concepts were hard, but Dr. Hartfield always holds office hours and will definitely help you. The tests were long, if you are not willing to put in the effort and don't want to study, do not take this professor. Overall, he is a great man and taught me a lot.
Dr. Hartfield is a great math teacher. He explains the material extremely well. His tests, however, are VERY difficult. Be careful taking his class unless you already have a lot of experience taking college classes: he isn't good for you if you are a freshman. He is always willing to help you, but you have to work very hard to pass.
Dr. Hartifield is an excellent teacher. He will go out of his way to help explain things more clearly especially during his office hours. The man is hilarious during class. The guy has his own poster of his famous sayings on his office door. My biggest complaint is that his test are EXTREMELY long and hard. He also has a short time limit for tests.
Dr. Hartfield is an amazing professor. Calc 2 is difficult. His grading is fair, he drops lowest test grade, and will change weight of grade depending on your performance. However difficult the class is, his personality makes it worth it. I took him for a 9 am and he kept me awake the entire time. If you want to learn the material take him.
Where do I start? One of the best professors I've had at mercer. Also the toughest. Made me be stronger in the long run. I have taken him for Calc 2 and Abstract mathematics (yes, I did). Very intense coursework but the lectures are amazing. No one can teach math like this man can. His class does require a lot of E-F-F-O-R-T.
He fails to teach effectively and makes math much harder than it needs to be. He also assigns way too many problems that dont even show up on the exam. The exams are near impossible to do well and problems that show up are highly unpredictable. Do not take him!!
His methods of teaching are beyond outdated and old. Hes really better off being a comedian since he does know how to crack a joke here and there. He needs to chill and be WAYYY easier on his students. He is terrible at teaching and grading. He should not be teaching here. Hes ruining students lives. I wouldnt for a second recommend his class!!!
Dr. Hartfield is easily one of the best teachers I have ever had. Others will say he is hard, but that's only because he expects you to put in the effort. Do not take this class if you aren't willing to work for it, but if you are then I don't think there's anyone better. His office hours are very helpful, and he really cares about his students.
Dr. Hartfield is not a bad person he is just unapologetically brutal. He expects students to know material before he teaches it and gets angry at the whole class If they are struggling. Most of class fails exams. No use In looking up how to do problems online or from the textbook though. If you don't do problems exactly how he teached it, its wrong
Jdjsjsjekjf
Dr. Hartfield is an amazing professor who is hilarious in class. His lectures are informative and his office hours are phenomenal. He is a tough grader who is a stickler for detail, but you will be ready for future math classes. You will know the material rather than just regurgitating it. Your grade is only tests & online practice.
Many students avoid Dr. Hartfield, but if you put in the work, there is no need. I thought that he was amazing! His lectures are extremely great, and he is also hilarious to the point where someone made him a must-see best quotes poster! But be prepared to be jokingly picked on in a fun way! (Leave us alone, Dr. Hartfield, leave us alone!)
I recommend Dr. Hartfield. Although he is at harsh at time, I learned a lot from him. If you get good grades he will praise you, and that feels good to know that the professor believes in you. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. You will understand his material so much more if you put in that extra time to go to his office hours. Just trust the process.
Dr. Hartfield is known to be challenging, but an A is very possible if you're willing to put in the effort. He has a LOT of knowledge in math, and he will make sure you understand the material. Make sure to attend class, otherwise you could get really lost. Tests were fair but if you don't study, they could be really difficult for you.
Miss class a couple times? Fail. Attendance is a major part of the grade. Mr. Hartfield is pretty harsh in terms of grading and also cold calls on students. If you want to pass, do the textbook problems, worksheets, attend class, and go to office hours. However, I think students would be better off taking a calc class from a different teacher.
Dr. Hartfield is by far the best professor I had in college. He also might have been one of the most difficult, but despite what some might think at first glance, he cares more about his students than any other professor I have had. He is always available multiple times a week, he even helped me during my other math classes he didn't even teach.
Dr. Hartfield is a great professor and teaches the material well; I just didn't like him as a person. He might say some brutal things, but it's better to tolerate it than drop the class. It's easy to make a good grade if you're putting in the effort. I passed his class without attending office hours, but don't hesitate to go if you need the help.
Good luck. Dr. Hartfield gives one problem per topic and will assign you a chapter's worth of homework that you cannot complete without his help. When you go to his office hours, expect to see five other kids in there trying to get help. He will yell at you in class and straight up not tell you things that will be on tests. Beware of Hartfield!
Only grades are the exams and final. You can study your ass off and know everything and fail because he will put random definition questions on the test or calc 2 review. He has office hours but don't expect help cause he will just call you dumb and yell at you. Takes of full credit for 30 point questions if you make one mistake. Always angry.
Listen to this. Ill give it to you straight. He's somewhat difficult. But he is one of the funniest professors ever and tells you exactly what is going to be on the tests. You have to study for sure, but going to his office hours and writing math problems with him while listening to his funny stories led to a hilarious and amazing math class.
Attaining an A in his class proves to be exceptionally challenging. The tests often feature unforeseen questions. Excelling in this class requires more than superficial understanding; it mandates a profound grasp of the subject matter coupled with meticulous attention to even the minutest details.
an acquired taste for sure. he sees the best in all his students and definitely expects that much out of them. he can be frustrating to deal with but ultimately if you put in the work he is a good teacher, just a bit fast paced and a has a tendency to dodge questions
Discrete Mathematics He expects you to have A LOT of previous knowledge from other math classes. So if you did well in Cal1 and/or Cal2 you should do well in this class. However, if you struggled in those classes, prepare yourself. He will mark an entire question wrong (30 points) if you forget something minor, beware.
Dr. Hartfield is a tough but fair professor. His class is challenging, but he's willing to work with students who put in the effort. Using unstuck AI and the textbook is key to success.
What a guy! I took Dr. Hartifield for a proof class, and his lectures were both entertaining and rigorous. He's a stickler for detail so be diligent. He expects deep understanding, and math builds on itself. He ensures you get it. Attendance matters! Take notes, ask questions, and do problems. He's very helpful, but only if you put in the effort!
I love em best professor out their really makes u learn or u gonna be on ur own version of the titanic
Dr. Hartfield is a good math teacher. HOWEVER, you have to have a good Calc 1 background in his class if you want to do well. He expects you to know it and if you don't, he will get upset with you. He does not give a lot of partial credit. He can be funny but sometimes offensive depending on your mood. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Take him at your own risk.
Repeated incidents of emotionally abusive & demeaning behavior. Hostile & discouraging learning environment. Inappropriate language, public humiliation, derogatory comments, dismissive behavior & unfounded accusatory confrontations in class. Expects perfect grammar & punctuation on exams when he is clearly incapable of that requirement himself.
His classes are very difficult. Tests make up most of the grade and you need a very very solid understanding of all calculus before this point. He is a very tough grader. Some of the other reviews talk about how rude he is, I think he tries to be rude to be a wake-up call that you need to try hard for this class.
He teaches fine. It's his tests that are the problem. The grading is never consistent, and he takes off points for spelling and punctuation (because he has vocabulary on his tests), and if you're finding the area and don't write A=(whatever) on every step, he takes .5 points off PER STEP. You can exempt his final exam, though. Go to office hours.
He is a good teacher. He is a strict grader but he tells you beforehand what he counts points off for (spelling, not remembering to write units etc.). His class is hard but if you put in the effort and go to his office hours for extra help you will be fine. He wants you to actually understand the material rather than just memorizing it.
Dr. Hartfield is a great professor. :)
Considered a difficult professor. Class grades are all exams but he drops the lowest grade. He expects you to know math you learned in and before his class. Might not always make you feel the best by but he will make you a better student. I love Dr. Harfield
Wonderful professor. Gives a bunch of extra credit for exams depending on participation in class and will grade fairly easily. He's hilarious so no lecture is boring and his lectures are thought out. Makes the material easy to understand, even if it's a hard topic. He gives lots of homework, but it's optional. Tells you what to expect on exams.
The guy is superb at what he does. Among the best profs I've had at Mercer. I don't understand why people don't like him here. His office hours are great, his lectures are clear and understandable, and he creates very forgiving tests. The guy cares about seeing everyone succeed. Make sure you do well on the tests since that's your only grade.
