He's awesome! Attendance isn't even mandatory but I like to go to lecture anyways because he explains the material in a very clear manner. Plus he's pretty funny!
This guy is full of himself, calls himself a Professor when in reality he is an "Intructor". He likes to blablabla without saying anything of substance.Definitely avoid him.
pretty clear in lectures and he only tests on what he covers in lectures. the lecture slides are posted online and he podcasts. theres 2 midterms, quizzes every week but their really easy, a final and a essay. his tests are set up as multiple choice and free response and aren't that hard if you pay attention in lecture.
He is so handsome and young!! I go to his lecture every time!!! He is really nice and really helpful!! Take his class if you are a girl!!!
lacks experience, doesn't cover material well, especially considering his exams, avoid by all means.
I feel like he doesn't know what he's doing or saying 95% of the time, i wish i would have waited to take Golden, SAVE YOURSELVES!
He only tests on what he covers in class, he gives out a lot of hints and tells you what is most important to know. There is homework and the midterm is hard. He bases his class on a bell curve. He likes to focus on the stuff he is interested more and gives out a lot of his own opinion. Overall he is a good prof.
Very cool professor. Looks like a TA. Most people were surprised he was the prof b/c of how hip he is. Explains material well and has good sense of humor. However exams cover some stuff not from lecture and some Qs are taken directly from Mastering Bio hw Qs, some of which also aren't covered in lecture. Overall a good prof and easy to approach.
Keefe is a great lecturer with easy to follow powerpoint and he does podcasts but when it comes to his midterms, The 1st midterm average was a 40% Most of the information on the midterm was stuff that wasnt covered in lecture and NOR power points. He old students NOT to read the text Good lecturer, hard exams. study time was about 5 hr a day
VERY easy as long as you listen in class and study. Funny and relates things in humorous ways that helps with paying attention in a lecture. Homework is harder than the tests and a mistake I made is studying the homework for a test, but they are different. Young teacher and he definitely knows what he's talking about.
He is a great lecturer with a good sense of humor. Makes it really easy to pay attention in class (also helps that he's rather good looking). His exams are fair and he tells you exactly what to study. He also has a bunch of practice midterms and finals to work with.
This guy doesn't know what he is talking about! not prepared for an upper division course at all
worst teacher at UCSD! this school is not about professors like him. He doesn't explain concepts very well and confuses himself and the students. do not recommend
If you do the online homework with a little diligence and memorize his lecture slides, you will totally get an A. And I'm not even an A student but I've been getting super above averages because a lot of the material is from BILD 1 and 3. Some lecture slides are printed word for word on the exam! He's a doosh during office hours and after class
Did not learn anything from him. I totally depended on my notes and knowledge from BILD1. exams are not hard since he doesn't teach well. I agree that he is not prepared to teach an upper division course.
Favorite professor at UCSD he never fails to keep my attention during class through the use of amusing real-world examples
he doesn't allow questions during lecture since he realized that he can't answer most of them. He would do a great job teaching freshmen BILD1 but he is definitely not qualified for higher level classes. Don't take it with him if you want to learn
His first time teaching genetics proved him to be...bad. Weekly quizzes, 2 mids, 1 final. Online hk completely irrelevant to what he teaches. He shifts all his bild slides to this class, which utterly devalues genetics as an upper div because you learn nothing out of him. His tests are not hard but shallow.
If i could do it all over again, would wait an entire quarter/year for a diff teacher. Book material is not on the test? Guess AGAIN, good thing i read the book. Grade cutoff for an A? 85% average on midterms? 55%. Although he does say he will lower the A average to the top 20% a normal upper div biology is 70-80%. Definitely avoid at all cost.
Molecular biology is a hard class. I think Dr. Reuther did a pretty good job explaining the concepts and he video podcasts. Exam material came straight from lecture and the quiz banks (which he provides after the quizzes). The cutoff for an A was an 85% and he gives 5% extra credit anyway. If you study hard, you can get an A.
Great teacher, really down to earth. However, he said that much of the material would not be on the tests and yet it was. Plus his grading system is basically straight scale. But you can't complain about that. Just felt a little misleading, but he's still a very clear teacher.
He is not prepared to teach molecular biology, he made it very confusing. He was confused while explaining the concepts himself! I hated going to class and listening to his pointless podcast; yet I did well since I depended on myself and online resources to help understand the material. Do NOT recommend him as a teacher for anything!
I thoroughly enjoyed this class and professor! In order to do well, read the book lightly before class to get an idea of what lecture will be about, do the online homework once (don't need to review it) pay attention to lecture, and memorize lecture slides. There is a mandatory essay but it helps your grade! I also liked the videos showed in class.
I didn't really care too much for him. Lecture is okay. Homework is EXTREMELY annoying and slightly different from what he actually goes over in class. I personally don't recommend him if you really wanna learn about actual genetics rather than a rehash of lower div biology.
He basically just uses the publishers powerpoint slides. That wasn't my favorite thing. Homework and essay + discussion quizzes help if you have trouble on the midterm/final. You're going to need to DIY in this class, no one is going to hold your hand through it.
Dr. Keefe has been my favorite teacher at UCSD so far. He has a brilliant passion for his subject and explains things in a way that is easy to understand. There is a lot of information you will need to learn, so if you're not willing to put in the effort to study and memorize, you probably should get out of the biology field anyways.
I don't understand why our class had an A rate of 16% and the other genetics professor had an A rate of 48%
He's just so awesome.
He's super easy & tries to keep the class fun. Uses real life, relatable examples to help you understand the material more. Don't really need to read the book bc tests are lecture-based. Pay attention to his lecture or listen to the podcast, look at PPT he posts up & you should get an A
Reuther is a good professor. He makes classes interesting, exams are really fair and quite easy if you pay attention in class. Plus, he makes pretty good eye candy.
Favorite prof so far at UCSD. Looked forward to class. Awesome.
This professor is easy to understand and follow. However, he does need to make a quota in regards to grades and will state this outright. Since our averages on the midterms were around an A- and B, respectively, he administered a final that crushed many people's grades and was much more in depth than the quizzes and tests. I wouldn't take him again
Prof. Reuther was probably my favorite professor. He was really funny and showed a lot of videos in order to keep lectures interesting. He's pretty young so he understands when you need help and if you email him, he responds pretty quickly and makes sure everything is clear. He curves pretty well too but his final was a lot longer I anticipated.
Very cool teacher, I enjoyed his class. I am a psyc major and he made me love bio! He is a great lecturer who can hold your attention and is very passionate about what he teaches. Tests are hard but he curves accordingly. I recommend taking him.
Great, funny, hot teacher! It's easy to slack off in his class. Looking back, I really should have tried harder.
He makes it easy to get an A, bc he makes it like a lower div class. Hes just too lazy. I do NOT recommend him. Tests are easy, content is very easy to understand (like BILD 1 & 3). But the weekly quizzes online are ridiculous! They cover more than lecture and even the book. No wonder its difficult to get a solid A. Just google all the answers..
He teaches the class really well. He can go a bit quick sometimes, but he posts up the lecture audio and video online, so you can go back to it when you need to. He speaks clearly and makes a lot of sense.
Reuther is an easy teacher, but he doesn't try to teach an upper division genetics course. Take him if you're looking for an easy A but don't expect to learn a lot about biology. He teaches the basics and won't explain further into the actual science behind it. Don't take this class if you want to learn.
Great lecturer, super funny. Tests are entirely based on lecture and podcasts are up so lecture itself is not mandatory. Tests are easy and a lot of it involves memory. There are essay assignments but those are really easy too.
A funny lecturer. However, I don't recommend him simply because of his lack of depth when it comes to explaining concepts. The course ended up being an upgraded, mash-up version of BILD 1 and 3. MIDTERMS were fairly easy to get A+'S on, but the FINAL was quite difficult. So do well on the midterms so you have high grades prior to the final.
Great professor. Would take again. He posts all of his lectures online which is super helpful. This is one of the professors who is actually at UCSD to TEACH, so he seems like he likes interactingteachingetc.
He is a cool guy if you get to know him in office hours. He is loud and clear. He can go a bit fast sometimes that you don't have the time to think about what he is saying and take notes from the slide. His test are sometimes a bit difficult just because he words a question in a confusing way instead of getting straight to the point.
Cool and funny guy, but don't believe him when he says you don't need the textbook. Quizzes and exams are way more in depth than what he covers in lecture, good luck.
Professor Reuther was a good professor. He made the material you needed you know very clear and the tests were straight forward.
He's my favorite professor at UCSD, and I'm not just saying that. I feel like someone's actually trying to teach us something as well as its applications to bio-related careers! His lectures are exciting and involve a lot of videos for those visualaudio learners and I love how everything's pod-casted. They really helped me understand the material.
Easy midterms, but an extremely hard final that most of the class did poorly on. He does offer a ton of grade boosters, such as open-note quizzes, an essay, and iclicker points. He is extremely helpful during office hours, provides a test bank, and video podcasts. Clear grading scale and does not curve if 50% of the class ends up having A'sB's.
Lots of (TIMED!) online quizzes but they are open note. Tests are really specific so be sure to read the book AND listen to his lectures. Very difficult final with a lot of MC but killer short answer. I barely finished on time. Also, he gives you an essay to do after the 2nd midterm. Has clickers for participation credit.
This was my second class with Professor Reuther! He is literally amazing. He makes class fun and inspired me to love genetics. If you put in the time, you'll do well in his course. His grading style is fair (homeworkprojects and midtermsfinals). A lot of people do well in his class.
He lectures fast and lectures in a story format, sometimes the things he says are irrelevant. He's very nice though, go to office hours to ask for clarification and he explains it better than in lecture. Very good looking professor.
Dr. Reuther did a very nice job of explaining everything in his lectures. He gives out previous exams as practice. Real tests are very similar to previous practice exams. No textbook required as long as you pay attention in class. Videos shown in class are interesting and relevant to the topic.
He is a very good lecturer so you don't need to buy the textbook. His lectures may be podcasted, but Clicker MATTERS. The exams consist of multiple choice and short answers so be prepared (first examkiller, secondeasy, finaldecent compared to 1st). It's all about memorization and understanding concepts so if you're good at these you'll do fine.
Some of his exam questions this quarter were not very reflective of what he went over in class... They were pretty difficult! Luckily, 85% and up is an A in his class. His lectures were enjoyable and he has a very clear voice. His podcasts were helpful. He also uses clickers so be sure to attend class! Weekly quizzes, 2 midterms, 1 final.
I got a solid A in this class and I'm not that smart. You must go to lecture and pay attention. He does video podcast which helps - rewatch them since he's very specific on some exam questions. Midterms weren't too bad but the final was hard. I got a 87 or 88% overall so there was a good cutoff. I got low As on the midterms. Quizzes are online.
Da Best , best best best best
He really knows what he's talking about. He makes even the boring subjects very interesting. He's very energetic and funny. The podcasts are amazing. If you listen to the podcast and take notes U DON'T NEED ANY ADDITIONAL SOURCES!The exams are not easy . You can't get a good grade just by memorizing stuff. You have to be able to apply the concepts.
I didn't learn as much genetics as I did BILD 1, he should have allocated more time to pedigrees and discussion of phenotypic/ genotypic ratios. The final was very tough, and the practice final and old exams were not at all reflective of it. TA's suck for this class, and he doesn't let you ask questions in class. Expect to self teach 3/4 of class.
I took his class just for fun as a senior at Point Loma High School. Definitely enjoyed the course and learned a lot, but would not consider myself an expert on nutrition at all. But as an athlete gave me a greater appreciation for what our bodies under go when we eat and excercise. His class is purely lecture based and he provides the notes. 10/10
Midterms and Final were tricky, but he explains stuff, and he's helpful in office hours, I couldn't stand his monotone voice in the podcast we had to watch tho. I wouldn't wait last minute to study for this class, make sure you know your stuff and use HIM more than the TAs. Quizzes are all online.
I mean you have to go to class for iClicker points but honestly I just played League of Legends in the back during lecture cause the class is pure memorization I literally printed out the review for each exam and quizzes on Sunday then work up Monday morning 4 hours before the exam and just memorized everything. So yeah not sure why ppl take notes.
i really tried to like his class b/c he is an entertaining guy. However, i don't agree with how he teaches. Goes over topics very vaguely, hardly any practice given, TA's are useless and doesn't answer questions during lecture. Test are difficult and totally different from material given. You need go into topics more deeply then lecture to get B/A
He's alright. If you've taken Bio before and this is just review definitely take him it's an easy A for review. However he can go fast and is vague when explaining some subjects so I wouldn't recommend him if you are brand new to a subject. class uses clickers for attendance. Don't buy the textbook. Funny guy.
hardly any genetics. more of a refresher on bio. Gives way too many problems with given time for midterms and the final is worse. It felt like he didn't want anyone to do well on them since the problems he does give take time and some could be done quicker if he let us use a calculator! Take someone else to save a headache.
I honestly loved professor Reuther! He always keeps the class entertained. The only class I never felt like falling asleep in. :)
Never answer your questions in class, tests are detailed and hard. The class is very dense and difficult materials but he went over them like 2 seconds and move on. Don't take him. You won't learn anything.
He was alright. It was kind of annoying how he would go on tons of tangents during class yet would never allow students to ask questions. Midterms were too long and the final was killer. He provides almost no practice yet expects us to be able to think outside the box on exams. However, he is very funny and makes the class period fly by everyday.
Keefe was super fun and cool! He knows what he's talking about when he lectures and it makes things so much easier to understand. He's super nice and approachable too!
I have to admit I have a bias because I had a crush on him from day one. His lectures are really interesting and funny. The material was pretty easy to understand and we didn't have to buy a textbook. I was never into bio, but I had fun with this class.
Dr. Reuther's lectures are interesting in that you won't sleep. His lectures include some cool videos and jokes for fun. He has weekly quizzes (but open note/ online), and fair midterms that go well with the lectures. No book required so you heavily need to rely on the podcasts/slides. He's a very approachable/nice guy! Hope to take him again!
He doesn't give in depth into concepts and a lot of his lectures toward the end of the quarter was a lot of video showing. Sometimes the tests will ask you a very specific part of lecture are make you recall a very specific detail/example that Reuther mentioned in class for 30 seconds.
He explains everything pretty well. Tests are based off lectures - aka don't buy the textbook. Really helps you succeed in the class. Easy class if you take it with him. Mandatory section activities. Weekly online quizzes. Two midterms (MC and FR) and one final. Clicker questions (for participation pts) every lecture. Practice exams. Podcasts :D
He is definitely a really cool guy; however, on his tests, he asks questions about little details that you thought were not necessary to know or concepts that he barely talked about. I felt like I was trying to memorize everything in order to do well in the class. He's entertaining though and has a really nice speaking voice!
Save yourself the stress.
Hilarious, knowledgeable, and very specific when it comes to grading. Very memorization-heavy.
His tests were not as representative of the material as they could of been; there were always a few questions on each exam that were not clearly covered in lecture. I wish he didn't rush lecture so much.
One of the greatest professors I've had at UCSD. Despite my initial skepticism, he really put an emphasis on understanding rather than blind memorization which I really appreciated. His tests sometimes do have a few questions outside the lecture material, yet he provides a ton of credit outside tests to make up for it. I highly recommend him!
Funny, well spoken, and entertaining professor. I would recommend making study guides and flashcards that are based off of his lectures. No need for the textbook. If you put the work in, an A is definitely achievable. I would take him again for other classes. Also, he's a super young dude so he can relate to the students very well. Overall, 10/10.
Lab classes are usually tough, but not with this guy! High respect for him, as the materials are well taught and I actually believe that I learned a lot from this class! There are five quizzes, all are reflective to stuff on the lecture and lab! All in all I recommend taking him for lab. Its not easy, but an A is achievable if you put effort !
Reuther is the Brofessor! Super cool dude, rides his skateboard around campus lol. Genetics with him wasnt bad, 2 midterms, final, and weekly quizzes online. Material is straightforward and tests are straight from the slides. Gives a tiny extra credit if 85% of the students fill out CAPES. 88% is a solid A.
Took this course during the summer, so only 5 weeks. Overall the class is very fun if you like lab work. The professor is very enthusiastic about the material. Make sure you review lecture notes before quizzes.
He's a great lecturer. He puts up his slides before lecture so you can bring them to lecture and follow them and just take minimum notes. He shows us videos that explain the concepts even better. I also met him outside lecture a few times and he spent as much time with me as I needed. Highly recommend.
The class was easy. However, it was super unorganized and all over the place and not organized but maybe because they changed the syllabus. There were 4 biweekly quizzes (5% each) and a cumulative final (20%). Clickers for attendance and a total of 6 lab reports which were not too long.
I really love Dr. Reuther and his lectures, it made me look forward to BILD 1. He's very clear and engaging and I thoroughly enjoyed his class. Exams can be rough but fair, but the online quizzes and section activities brings your grade up by quite a bit. Really hope I can get him again at some point!
One of the best professors I have ever had the pleasure of taking a class with. If you go to lecture and pay attention, you could easily do well in his class. He is also extremely helpful, funny, and caring about his students. By far the most interesting professor I have had (you can take him for 8am and he will keep you awake with his energy).
One of the best professors I've ever taken. He explains very well, is passionate about the subject, and makes funny jokes sometimes. Weekly quizzes aren't too bad cause you can use any source to help you out. The class is out of a lot of points so it takes a lot to drop your grade. Great professor, recommend him to everyone.
Pretty easy class except for the quizzes (but they were curved). Just make sure to do a good thorough job on your writing assignments and poster project so you don't have to worry about your quizzes as much.
He is very enthusiastic about the material and is able to keep you really engaged however his tests are not very straight forward he often focusses on stuff you might have thought was unimportant. Even if you study the material a lot it might be hard to ace his tests due to his specifications on the test watch the podcast forsure
Hes great, really young, a pretty funny guy, spoke to him a couple of times, hes very caring for his students. I missed my final quiz because my alarm didnt go off, and he let me retake the quiz. Really nice lecturer. Lecture explanation pretty interesting and clear.
This class is going to be tough no matter who you take but taking Reuther made things easier. Just pay attention in lecture and you're good. He cares a lot for your grade and wants you to really understand the material.
Hardest Midterm ever for any upper bio class. Not because the material was difficult, but because he spent about 10 minutes every lecture going over meaningless things and then rushed over the important stuffs. Tons of details shown on the exam and many of them were barely mentioned during the lecture. Humorous Lecturer does not mean good lecturer
Dr. Reuther is an above-average professor with a talent for engaging students in a 400-person classroom. He is clearly passionate about the material, and will go out of his way to help you if you don't understand a concept. Exams are focused on what he talks about in lecture, so make sure you show up or watch the podcasts to do well.
One of my top professors at UCSD. Really cares about his students and makes sure things are kept fair. He does a good job explaining material and making sure he is available for those who are lost. Tests are very fair and straightforward, and he's just an all around cool guy. Take him if you can!
Dr Reuther is one of my favorite profs. He's got amazing lecture slides, his lectures are podcasted too. I love how he shows us lots of videos in class too, which makes concepts so much more clear. He's super approachable and very chill. His exams focus more on concepts rather than memorizing facts which could be tricky but it's nicer to learn.
Had him for BILD4 too; I always enjoy his lectures as he is a down-to-earth yet knowledgable guy. Tests may sometimes be conceptually difficult, so prepare for more than just memorizing slides, you have to thoroughly understand ideas. Go to office hours, watch supplemental material if you need to, but this class is very passable and enjoyable
Profesor Reuther is one of the best and most passionate professors Ive had. He provides plenty of practice exams/questions, online resources, podcasts. Also has iclicker for participation and section participation. Tests(2 midterms and a final) were fair and mix of free response and multiple choice. Also weekly quizzes are online and open note.
If you've taken a Prof Reuther class then you know the drill. The class is pretty much solely based on his lecture slides which are relatively easy to follow and understand. His exams can be confusing at times as far as the way questions are worded but not unfair most of the time. You can easily do well by just podcasting and reviewing slides
He's really funny (dip out if you don't like insects because he loves them with a burning passion especially ants) & knowledgeable about the material. No readings required and just a weekly quiz that counts as homework. Nothing to stress about at all. His lectures are engaging and he shows lots of fun videos in class.
I love Professor Reuther! He is super sweet and genuinely cares for his students. His class is powerpoint based, but he explains each slide in depth in order to do well on the test. He is an amazing professor and I would 10/10 take him again.
Professor Reuther is great. I learned a lot from the course and Dr. Reuther was the best.
Hes great but goes over slides way too fast. Since theres not readings everything on the quizzes will be coming from the slides and videos he shows. The exams were a bit difficult but he had a decent curve. Definitely not taking any more bio after this.
Reuther makes class very fun and interesting. He goes over a lot of information very quickly, so you'll definitely need to stay focused and have his posted lecture slides on hand to keep up. The tests aren't too difficult, but again it is a lot you need to memorize and understand. This is a teacher and class that you will not regret taking.
Keefe is a great dude. He is hilarious and knows his stuff. He moves through notes fast, but he posts everything online so it's not a big deal if you miss something. One of the best professors at this school. Also his computer wallpapers are the best.
Unfortunately a lot of the reviews seem to reflect Reuther's personality and not his ability as a professor. Yeah he's a funny guy and very bro like but as a professor he's completely overrated. I was really interested in genetics prior to taking his course but after having class with him he really steered me away with the way he taught the course.
I love prof. Reuther, he is so passionate and inspiring. He teaches the material very well, and lectures are very entertaining. There is one online quiz a week and they are usually pretty easy. The midterms and final were pretty hard, just pay attention in lecture and go to office hours, he's very helpful and friendly. Overall, great class.
One of the best lecturers I've ever had; lecture content is occasionally dull but he lightens the subject with relatable analogies. Exams are pretty difficult ( the average is usually a 73%), but go to class, office hours, discussion sections and you should be pretty prepared.
Reuther managed to take my favorite class from junior college and turn it into my least favorite at UCSD thus far. He did this by leaning on freely available internet videos, testing on social justice warrior politics, and by sloppy lecturing with little information presented. He means well and wants to be progressive but forgets to teach biology.
Reuther as a guy is great but as a professor, he's average at best. He lectures very fast which makes listening to him and taking notes impossible. He shows way too many unrelated videos and tries to be too liberal. His tests are unnecessarily difficult which forces him to give way too many free points in quizzes and assignments.
I may be in the minority here, but I really enjoyed his class. He really enjoys the materials and talking to students. A lot of the complaints I here is that he uses a lot of online videos and brings up politics. I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing. It's still related to the subject and it's good to have a greater context to the material.
Reuther is easily one of the best instructors I've ever had. His lectures are incredibly engaging and while he does show a lot of videos, they're actually very helpful and I find myself referring back to them during tests/quizzes. On top of that he's funny, very kind, and well-respected. It's hard to find all of those qualities in one professor.
Lectures arent mandatory but theres iclicker credit! Go go lab and youll pass. A few quizzes through the quarter that are tough if you dont study or go to lecture. The class is fine, but super boring. Reuther is a very smart and caring professor.
Hes a great professor! The thing is you do have a lot of work for a 2 unit class. Its not his fault just a heads up. Super cool guy and super nice.
Overall a super chill professor who is passionate about what he does. Quizzes are all free response and can get very specific, so make sure you go over his lectures (since there is no textbook use). However, lab-related work is graded by TA's. A lot of work for a 2-unit class but grading isn't too bad.
Likable person, a decent professor. His class is pretty easy, so long as you keep up and understand what's going on in the labs. Final poster presentation is an easy A for everyone. Tests are dependent for each person on how much they understand and remember from lab. Lectures aren't tooo important for the course. Writing assignments are tough tho.
Probably the most boring class (lecture + lab) I've taken yet. I'm sure if you pay attention everyday, an A is within reach; however, his monotone voice and digressions make it nearly impossible to even stay awake. Unnecessary assignments, but I suppose they're not too bad as they typically don't take long. Take another professor if possible. Yep.
Bild 4 is one of the most boring and useless classes I've ever taken, but it's not Reuther's fault. As a professor, he's great! I had him for Bild 3 and I really enjoyed that class. I would recommend him for any class because he is a great lecturer and really cares about his students.
Reuther has been one of my favorite professors here at UCSD so far. He has amazing lectures, super passionate, and genuinely cares about his students. Study the lecture notes a lot because his midterms can be pretty tricky and challenging. Going over podcasts helps a lot as well.
He's a really engaging professor and has very organised lectures. Spend time outside class as his tests can be a little tricky but u can still manage an A if you try. Gives extra credit opportunities . Would definitely take him again !
Tries to make his class more important than it actually is by giving you useless busy work that is worth more than actual exams. The grading is super inconsistent, and his lectures are ambiguous/unclear.
I love Dr. Reuther. He's enthusiastic about teaching and his lectures are really engaging. He's a funny guy and he made a subject I don't really like interesting. He adds unnecessary videos to lectures but I didn't mind them. His midterms are fair and very manageable if you study. Highly recommend!
Really awesome guy, and you can tell he really cares about his students. Exams kinda hard, but fair. Very accessible prof, and did a great job with the online transition.
Reuther is an amazing professor! He's very caring and does the best he can for his students. Genetics is a tough subject so of course you gotta expect the class to be hard. All of the assignments he gives are meant to give you practice and help you retain what you learn in lecture, especially the problem sets. One of the best at UCSD!
Keefe is a cool guy. He got lots of doggos. He is also a really good teacher and was really understanding while this class was online. That said there is a lot to learn in this course. We had two midterms and a final, mini-papers, problem sets and discussion posts. If you have learned some genetics before, the beginning of this class will be review
Reuther has been an amazing professor for BILD 4 so far this quarter. Lectures are incredibly engaging material wise, and he does a lot to make sure the class isn't too boring. We've seen him playing with his dogs and discusses pop-culture. Quizzes are super duper easy - so as long as you show up to Lecture and Lab you're all good!!
He was super involved during lecture, explained things slowly, and was helpful for our final project. He gives very good feedback and I feel like he actually cared about us doing well. Plus he showed us his puppies almost every lecture.
Reuther's a very nice professor. He is very passionate during his lectures and answers students' questions wholeheartedly. Make sure to pay attention to the lectures as you need them for quizzes and writing assignments (which are basically lab reports). If you pay attention to the lecture you will get to see his dogs which is an additional bonus :)
Dr. Reuther is a good professor. However, he uses a lot of analogies and conceptualizes topics, whereas I prefer more straightforward lecturing. Regardless, I can see how students would enjoy his type of lecturing. The class is not difficult, but your grade is volatile, so don't miss out on easy points on Writing Assignments, Contribution, etc.
Probably one of the best professors I have had so far. Lecture was always fun and interesting, but the quizzes were quite harder than expected to be. During lab I wish the instructions were explained a little better before we were sent out to breakout rooms but overall, it was an amazing class! 10/10 recommend, plus we get to see puppies in lect.!
Reuther is a passionate professor and knows a lot about biology, but at times his explanations for topics can be hard to understand. The class grading is pretty straight forward and easy as long as you follow instructions. Attend live lectures since slides won't make sense if you read them afterward. Overall an enjoyable class, lots of group time.
Great professor! Would recommend
Dr. Reuther is a good lecturer and doesn't overcomplicate the material. The tests can be a little challenging, but overall the class isn't bad. He has super cute dogs too and was nice enough to show them regularly during lectures. He's a really nice guy, and I highly recommend.
I loved having Dr. Reuther for BILD 4. He really cares about his students and during his office hours, he will take the time to really teach you one on one if you don't understand the concepts. Really cool professor and would recommend it to someone who likes a professor that is very personable and fun.
He's a cool dude. His lectures were good, and his grading is pretty easy.
Ive had prof Reuther for 4 classes. All starting in HS when he came to teach BILD3 and BILD 22. Him along with prof Hampton are the two best upper div bio teachers at UCSD. Many profs care mostly about research and their students are priority #2. Not Dr. Reuther, he makes you feel like his students are most important. Hope our paths cross again.
Only 3 weeks into the quarter but Reuther seems like a professor that's actually passionate about his students. Replies quickly, makes *lots* of accommodations for the 2 international students in his class, and genuinely seems to want to teach students. Hope he's like this for the rest of the quarter :)
Prof. Reuther was really great and you can tell he really cares about his students. His material isn't hard to understand if you actually take the time to study and look over lecture notes & quizlets. There are weekly quizzes and problem sets that help prepare you for exams.
Lectures were clear and good for note taking. Tests were definitely doable if you were caught up on lectures. Gave options for if you wanted to watch the lecture synchronously or asynchronously. Super easy class if you took APES in high school, definitely still pretty easy if you didn't.
One of my favorite profs at UCSD! He made the material super interesting so it was easier to invest my time into it. His tests are very fair and representative of lectures. I took him for BILD 4 too and I just love his teaching style. Definitely recommend!
Reuther is understanding and teaches well. He presents difficult material beautifully with plenty of example questions in lecture. Weekly problem sets, discussion boards, section assts are worth it bc it helps you understand the material. Fair exams. Plenty of opportunities to do well in the class too. Not an easy A but Reuther is def the way to go
He's a great professor! He's super funny and knows a lot about biology. Labs were fun and I learned a lot from the class. I would definitely recommend it. My only complaint was that at times the lectures seemed to cover very simple concepts but the quizzes would often ask relatively complex questions based of those concepts.
He made the class really interesting and entertaining so I enjoyed going to class. I felt like there was not enough time to finish the tests but otherwise I thought the class was enjoyable and not very difficult.
Professor gives too much busy work, and his exams are insanely difficult.
Too much work; way too difficult exams. Not worth the time and effort, take someone else, would ya?
Reuther is really nice and all, but I don't really like his lecture style. You have to write every single thing he says because topics he mentions for like a minute will be on the exams + hw. Also the hw was graded so harshly so it killed your grade. I don't know if it was bc it was summer, but I felt like he gave up at the end & exams were HARD
Super nice guy! Really cares about biology and students. Lectures and quizzes are straight forward. Good if you have prior experience with Excel.
Dr. Reuther is a very nice professor who explains things well. He is knowledgeable and friendly and very open to helping students. I did have a bad experience with one of the IAs. She was rude and condescending when talking to me, and I felt as if what I wanted to express was shut down because of her tone.
Definitely an entertaining professor. He's very passionate about teaching and explains concepts fairly well. Exams were fairly difficult in my opinion, but as long as you can apply his concepts, you'll be fine.
Professor Reuther is very entertaining and his lecture are enjoyable BUT nothing he presents in the lecture is actually on any of the exams. The average grade for the quizzes taken every other week are around a 50% and the average for the first midterm was a 65% great professor but be prepared to be confused on the exams.
He's an amazing lecturer, makes things easy to understand and gives lots of opportunities to improve your grade
great prof but omg this was a filler class and it was difficult for me bc it was coding. idk how to code it was my first time and it was def hard. hes an entertaining lecturer and i believe they were lenient on the grading which was a problem set & discussion post. exam was 2 parts a set & then 60 Qs. not bad but idc for bio and coding is hard lol.
Online quizes every week due 11:59 on sunday that are open note. They weren't hard but weren't too easy. He really cares about the material and makes it clear what the tests will be covering. participation is required with iclicker but you can miss around 4 days without consequence. Overall an entertaining and interactive professor.
Keefe is such a great professor who is such an interesting lecturer. Really engaging and cares about his students. Lectures were so fun and he is willing to help and answer any of your questions. Without a doubt, recommend for BILD 3.
Lectures were so boring. Labs were fun and engaging. Prof only taught during lectures and labs were run by Lab Assistants. There were weekly lab notebook assignments that weren't hard. Biweekly online open-note quizzes and writing assignments (some group most individual). The final is a group poster presentation that you begin building in week 6.
Great professor, very engaging. iClicker questions in lecture. Seemed to truly care about his students' success.
I think that the professor is nice and does his best to make the content engaging, however, I didn't find the lectures enjoyable and I wouldn't do this class again. Too much information to digest, too many unfamiliar terms lacking clarification, moving onto new content too fast. If this isn't your major or field of interest, I wouldn't recommend.
This professor is caring and gives lots of feedback/clarification. Although the course states that knowledge of stats isn't required, I think it would be beneficial to have some knowledge before taking the class. He goes over all the stats terms however, as someone who never took a stats class before, it wasn't very thorough.
Good professor but the class itself is so draining. BILD 4 has so much work and it's such a long class. his lectures are a waste of time but they are mandatory so. He isn't bad and there are worse out there but the class itself takes up way too much time so prepare yourself for that.
His lectures are mandatory and require participation, but they're very engaging. The lab is long, but it goes by quickly and the TAs are helpful. Make sure you have a good lab group. Lots of writing too.
Super easy class as someone who has no prior experience in coding. You're given a full week to complete problem sets and for the first few they give you all the answers through discussion. Lectures were pretty interesting, no statistics or coding knowledge needed. Easiest final I've ever taken! Very fun and engaged prof too.
Dr. Reuther is an amazing professor. You don't really need to take notes unless you want to. However, the class wasn't mainly taught by him, but instead of the TA! During the lab section, I had Max Gruber and he was one of the best TA's I will have in my UCSD career. Super funny, thoughtful and knowledgeable too. BILD 4 was an amazing experience!
I haven't taken a biology class since 9th grade, but this lab class made things very easy to digest. Writing assignments were a pain in my opinion but they're very doable and have great feedback. The lectures were fine, and Dr. Reuther shows that he cares what he teaches. Shoutout to my TA Vanessa and my lab group too they they G.O.A.T. fr fr
literal GOAT he was super chill and a funny guy. lecture attendance is mandatory but they're okay to sit through. lab sections are all led by TA's and super easy as long as you do what the lab manual says.
Well...He is a good guy. But he is too chatty in the lecture and can't explain things well. After you take the class, it is hard to tell that you really learned something new. I don't think that professor Keefe clearly explained the principles behind the experiment in his lecture.
Lectures are mandatory but engaging, and the TAs are super helpful in the labs. While the workload is heavy, using resources like Unstuck ai alongside the textbook can make BILD4 an enjoyable experience. Professor Reuther cares about student success.
Keefe cares a lot for the success of his students, and will address any concerns as soon as possible (after all it is a developing class). Lecture is mandatory, but mentimeter participation make it engaging. Since the concept of this class can be challenging to understand, there are time where lecture doesn't address my confusion.
Beware beware beware beware
Lectures and slides were very straightforward with good visuals and examples. R homework could be challenging, but discussion sections and office hours helped a lot. Prof brings in some current topics and applies each concept to important events/IRL examples. Overall interesting and very willing to help!
Keefe is amazing but this class was a pain. I didn't mind coding but the lectures were hard to grasp. Lots of concepts thrown at you at once, so it's great if you have a strong stats foundation prior. Rewatching all the lectures before the final took forever but helped immensely. Also attendance is mandatory but discussion isn't
Keefe is a very chill and caring professor. His lectures are excellent( and mandatory), and I very much enjoyed them, even though they were relatively hard to understand at times. No midterms, final 20%, final coding project 25%, Bi-weekly @ home canvas quizzes 15%, weekly coding assignments 25%, discussion board 10%, lecture attendance 5%
He was okay I guess... Bad at responding to emails though which was often frustrating, but the class was pretty easy
He's a very nice who cares about his students, but his lectures can be long and boring. Only showed up to discussion once and never again. Attendance is mandatory but does not use iclickers.
I hated this class. I found it so useless and boring. I thought I was gonna shank the class cause I had no idea what was happening the entire quarter, even tho I went to every lecture. The final was fine; Keefe is goated. He is a super nice guy and is very outgoing. A good option for this crappy class. Love Keefe. Hated the class.
Keefe makes coding so fun and enjoyable, so if you're a bio major terrified of R, you'll be totally fine. Super marketable skill too. His lectures are funny, and he's actually a chill dude. Will chat with you for an hour about books, and he's super caring. Pretty easy class imo and very accessible during office hours
He's actually so annoying. You have multiple quizzes but he doesn't assign them until Friday but they're due Sunday. The hw is unrelated to the exams. Lectures are boring. Said the midterm would be week 5, ended up being week 6 and we still don't know if it's written or multiple choice. He's actually so unorganized 😐
Dr. Reuther is a good person and cares about his students, however, the problem mainly lies in the class. There is so much coding you are expected to do outside of class and if you don't rely HEAVILY on your TAs, it is difficult to do good. It is like being in two classes at once and one having no lectures.
Consistency in teaching and grading is a huge issue in this course. Assignments are changed last minute. The only midterm was released on a false curve (that was later completely removed). Concerns with contradicting material have been ignored. Would not recommend to those looking to learn about statistics or feel secure in their submissions.
Engaging and helpful lectures, not much homework. Having a good lab group is the most important and assignments are all graded by the IA's.
He was pretty chill and overall, if you somewhat pay attention in class and do the assignments, this would have been an easy a.
Lecture didnt really align with lab. Lectures kind of felt pointless to attend. Make sure to pick a good lab group. Your grade is essentially determine by your IA. Mine was a little strict which is why I got a B. Otherwise, fairly easy class.
Super cool and funny guy! As someone who thought they HATED coding and had very little experience, this class eases you into it and makes it very doable. Midterm and final can have some confusing questions, just understand the concepts + how they connect and you'll be okay. This class makes me WANT to code, would take again.
Prof Reuther made the course as doable as possible. R coding is far from fun and this is especially true if you have no prior knowledge of coding but Reuther designed the course so that everything is taken one step at a time and without stress. I highly recommend him for BILD 5 since the tests won't beat you up and that A is achievable.
The average for midterms/finals is very low due to how picky his grading is, the multiple choice are tricky. He offers 1pt xtra credit, useless. Wasted a lot of hours studying for nothing! Wish he would take feedback from midterm/final scores and adjust how strict he is. Horrible experience, take this course with anyone else!
The course feels poorly designed, assignments are rarely graded on time, and we never really know where we stand, never responds to emails. Material itself is very dense, coding part is dry and boring, and he can be rigid with the grading, a pain to get full points. He should seriously simplify the material and grading.
He is pretty nice and friendly during his office hours. However, he is very disorganized in lectures, and often wants us to figure out the concept (through mentimeter questions or AI) rather than teaching us, causing some confusion in our comprehension in some of the concepts. (some of his explanations of concepts are factually wrong btw)
Lectures were meh. He did teach some content, but the other part of the class was like an introduction to college. My TA, however, was absolutely amazing and made the class fun. Labs are fun and interesting. Almost every assignment is group based on where you sit on the first day. I got unlucky with group and ended up doing all the work :(
Lectures are literally useless. He is insanely disorganized and constantly rearranging assignments and not adjusting dead lines to match the changes. The coding portion is completely self taught. He doesn't answer emails. His grading is linear, he basically expects you to read his mind. He also uses AI to grade coding assignments (it grades wrong).
Lectures were mandatory but you can miss a class or two. Course content is really chill and easy to understand. Lab was really fun, but almost all work is completed as a group. Luckily I had a really good lab group and TA. Easy class to get an A so just enjoy learning lab techniques!
Prof says its not a coding course but I spent so much time trying to teach myself to code, by the time I finished I didn't want to even look at lecture material. I feel that MCQ were easy to answer on exams but for free response Q's more than half the class did bad. I didnt feel set up for success in that way.
GO TO DISCUSSION FOR CODING HELP!!!! this class is mainly a stats class and coding is used to perform stats. the assignments aren't long or demanding they can just be tedious and frustrating. the written portions of the midterm and final are graded pretty tough.
Keefe is clearly passionate about what he teaches, but his lack of organization and nitpicky grading detracted a lot from this class. Assignments are often changed last minute and grading criteria are not made clear, leading to tiny point deductions that add up. Lectures are mandatory and Mentimeter participation makes them more engaging.
Genuinely a good professor, this class was not difficult. It's basically college algebra based stats with programming thrown in. Attendance mandatory for lecture, but just scan the code at the beginning, then leave. I would have easily gotten an A if I studied at least once or completed all the assignments. Not a hard class, a nice professor.
Very passionate about subject and also very funny. Genuinely wants to help in giving advice about future career plans in biology.
He's a very kind and approachable professor, but the class was kinda unorganized. Lectures were much easier than assignments, leaving you confused, grading was inconsistent due to auto-grader errors, and assignments would sometimes chang. Not an easy A, but manageable if you stay on top of it, but definitely was uncertain and stressful.
This dude's solid 2
Some of the parts of the class were a little bit disorganized and confusing. Overall the class is very easy to get a good grade in as long as you do the work so its a good experience.
He only had one lecture per week, so not too much to say on him, but he was funny and very encouraging.
