wastes a lot of time in class talking about garbage rather than doing examples/explaining things
His lectures, tests, homeworks, and readings never seem to line up, which can be irritating. He does try to keep you engaged during class though. Clicker questions occasionally in class that are based on participation.
Seriously, his teaching skill needs to be improved for sure.
He checks student ID during every exam. He occasionally uses clicker for class participation. It seems he tries to make a good lecture but his lectures are not organized well.
harsh grading, unclear lecture, disorganized test.
He's definitely a nice guy. Although it feels like his lectures are not as organized or helpful as one would like. He was very helpful during office hours though!
His tests are hard, and his lectures don't really help you understand the tougher material. Grading is harsh in general. Long problem sets each week.
He is absolutely amazing! This is the best class I have ever taken in my entire life. It opened my mind like nothing else I had ever experienced. Dr. Berland is a very smart man and you can learn SO much from him. Take advantage of this! He is awesome!
terrible professor. no help. could not of been worse
Best class I've ever taken. Dr. Berland is absolutely amazing!!!!
Professor Berland is such a caring professor! He really wants people to learn just in general. This class is not what I expected (and I am not a science person in the slightest) but each class had something I could take away that was interesting. Also, there really wasn't much work for the whole semester.
He is a nice guy, but the summaries and critical analysis assignments are overwhelming.
Tests aren't too tricky but lecturing is atrocious. Seems like a cool guy to play tennis with but probably the last professor you want explaining physics concepts to non physics majors. Loves to cram material in the last 10 minutes of class.
All around great professor
For 142 at least, the guy tended to want to always discuss advanced physics topics. "We can't cover this in this class" came up a lot. Lectures came across as somewhat disorganized at times, but his tests were ultimately pretty straightforward. He also scales grades when averages are low.
He thinks he is inspirational, yet he doesn't know that he is very confusing. When you go ask him questions, he will give you the most disgusted face as if telling you "you should know this". He is not helpful at all. His lectures are super boring. Tests are tough. AVOID
So his lectures aren't very clear. But the book helps so much and I just read it over and over to understand. I have NO physics background, so I definitely had to work, got pretty decent grades on exams. Understand the concepts and mostly just know the formulas and how to work em. Curved low average tests. Study 3-4 days per exam, youll be fine fam
Lectures are not engaging and seems to have a short temperament. Answers questions in tangents and is overall confusing. You're going to have to read the book to learn any physics.
His lectures are boring, but he gave summary sheets in the exams which help a lot. He is sometimes intimidating when you ask questions. Reading the book helps a lot, and attendance is not necessary.
Nice guy, not a great professor. He was very engaged in the material and made himself very accessible outside of class. However, he is a mediocre lecturer at best, and I found that just reading the book and occasionally attending lectures was good enough.
Decent in class & hosts tons of office hours, however isn't incredibly welcoming upon arrival. Also, while the material is covered well in class, it is often fast paced/there is little opportunity for questions. Generally very fair on homework and exams, however the format of the exams is a little different than hmwk questions. Final exam was rough
2/3 through the semester and he is by far one of the most difficult professors I have had. Goes quickly through material in class and very standoffish, even when he is sometimes wrong. Tests do not completely reflect homework and lecture and require a lot more studying and conceptual knowledge than he prepares you for.
spends the 1st ten minutes of EVERY lecture figuring out how to work the projector. Then stops class multiple to complain about how he is freezing (in 75 degree weather). Makes an issue out of every little thing, repeatedly called tech support for non-issues in the middle of lecture. Everybody is lost in the lecture by minute 15
Lecture are super unclear and unhelpful, tests are difficult and sometimes NOT reflective of course material. He has to be one of the worst physics professors in the department. I highly recommend not taking him if there are others available.
Exams didn't quite line up w/ class notes. Lecture happened in the last 20 mins. of class (1h15) due to tech issues/ rambling on about adv. physics topics. I spent a lot of time learning key concepts on Khan Academy/Youtube & 4 days for exam prep. In 141, I skated by just redoing HW problems, & re-reading my notes. That didn't work for this class.
Unhelpful in office hours and in class - makes you feel stupid when you don't know something. Tests are extremely difficult and graded harshly. Try to avoid as much as possible.
His exams are emotionally and mentally exhausting, which would be fine for a STEM class if his teaching style wasn't atrocious and he wasn't a condescending ass in office hours. Half the class walked out the second and third exams feeling wrecked. Final exam was MC (goodbye partial credit!). He also HIT ON AN UNDERGRAD in front of 50 students.
Incredibly conceited, unpleasant, and disinterested. Go to lecture if you're in the mood to waste 75 minutes.
Good luck learning physics on your own. Tests do not correspond with lecture material. Lectures are unclear and confusing. Khan academy and the textbook will teach you physics.
Not a bad professor. Definitely need to learn things on your own. Exams are not easy.
All I can say is GOOD LUCK! Lectures are unclear and confusing, so you'll basically have to learn physics on your own. Spent the majority of the class fiddling with the technology (microphone and iPad). Tests are challenging. He doesn't post the notes. Khan academy, the textbook, your lab TA, and other online resources will teach you physics.
Very kind professor, seems intimidating but is very approachable and helpful during office hours. Very passionate about the subject. His tests are fair if you work hard for them. He wants to help his students understand the content.
idk whats going on with this reviews. He's truly a good guy. passionate about his subject, offers a crazy amount of resources that i never used but the thought is nice. Not the nicest guy in the world, but definitely not mean. tests are super fair imo. The material is tough but the toughest material is never on the tests anyways. No complaints
Exams are very fair, usually doesn't try to trick you if you know content well. He's really not that mean but can sound harsh sometime. Really one of the most caring profs, used slack to answer students' questions at almost any time and posts plenty of material to help students do well. I really prefer him to Warncke tbh.
He was very accessible outside of class. He is not the nicest person but he eventually made me fall in love with physics. His exams were fair - he wanted to see you succeed.
Very few STEM professors at emory make the effort to care for their students in such a large lecture like he does. I struggled in 141 a lot but Dr. Berland really helped me understand 142. If you go to any office hours where there is not a lot of people you will see how supportive and helpful he is. He really cares a lot about all of his students.
Physics 142 is definitely different than 141, but it is very doable. Dr. Berland explains concepts very clearly and makes it obvious what kinds of things to know for the exams. Although I never met with him outside of class, he always reminded students to go to office hours of contact him if you have any questions. He wants you to do well.
I had no background in physics II but Dr. Berland made the class approachable. He posted video tutorials and held office hours to help us with study skills. He adapted the class well to the online format and made sure that we learned what we needed for the MCAT. Actual exams are more challenging than Webassign and practice but curved to 85 average.
Really cares about his students so if you reach out and go to office hours, he will help you out. He wants everyone to do well and can sometimes seem slightly condescending but honestly, he's not. He's super sweet and helpful. DO the homework!! Go to his OH to review it REGULARLY and you'll be fine even if you aren't good at physics.
Dr. Berland is very good at explaining complex concepts and takes very much care for ensuring that his students understand the material. He is very willing to help people out outside of class and makes himself very accessible. He grades fairly and is a very friendly professor.
Very helpful when you approached him one-on-one and in office hours, and even though he clearly knows the content well, his answers to questions never seemed condescending. Seems to genuinely care about teaching, listened to feedback. His lectures werent the clearest, but given the difficulty of the course material, thats not damning.
Dr. Berland is a great professor and he handled the online situation very well. He makes himself available and gives good feedback on quizzes. Unfortunately, he does teach a tough course, so I can see how people might get frustrated with him at times. It's not his fault, the math is just hard! Homework twice a week and quizzes weekly, cum. final.
Amazing teacher and really care that his students learned, which is why there are many homework problems assigned. Cause for math, you do have to learn by practicing. Very legit professor for this class and has the grasp of the material. He also tells you why they matter in physics and useful in other fields. Tells you the why and shows you the how
Professor Berland created a unique recorded lecture system that combined with class that I hadn't ever seen before. The ability to pause the lectures and go at my own pace allowed for a much better learning experience, not just because it let me take copious notes, but also due to its thorough nature. Overall, a class quite well done.
He does not know how to teach or answer any questions. During OH, he is not helpful in explaining answers, rather tells you to improve study habits. He does not know how to write fair exam questions that match up to class content and his distribution of midterm questions is absolutely off point.
His exam questions do not match anything he goes over in lectures or in the homework, and expects you to figure out a complex problem youve never seen before in a short period of time. Very stressful even though the purpose of a dispersed midterm is supposed to alleviate some of the anxiety.
Dr. Berland is a pretty great teacher! His lecture system was definitely unique and the idea of learning through asynchronous sessions and following up during lecture sessions was a nice changeup. The class is a lot of work but it is a class dedicated to strengthening your math fundamentals. He is also very accessible outside of class. Fair grader.
This course was very poorly taught. He used Teams instead of Canvas and Zoom. No content taught in the sync classes and async lectures were not helpful. The homework on WebAssign was not horrible but did not help in the grand scheme of the distributed midterm questions that did not help with stress due to the complexity of problems in no time....
Absolutely the worst professor I've ever taken at Emory, I can't believe he is still allowed to teach students. Tells students their questions are stupid and refuses to answer, assumes everyone is a genius like him, and just overall rude and mean. So unfair that he is the only 142 professor and got stuck with him, avoid him at all costs if possible
Dr. Berland is terrible at teaching material to students through his lectures. I cannot recall how many times I finished an asynchronous video more confused than before I watched it. I mostly learned physics 2 using the textbook and YouTube. He was also quite condescending whenever I would ask questions about the material.
The only good thing about this class was that I didn't have to show up. Attendance is not mandatory, so I didn't have to waste my time trying to understand Dr. Berland's poor explanations. After watching his lectures, I was more confused. Webassign is not a good platform to test students. Unfortunately, he doesn't listen to reason.
Very thorough lectures, he made some really tough concepts seem simple, even through online learning. Fair homework and exams. Helpful in office hours (highly recommend going to them even just for tips on how to study or how to approach problems). You can do well in his class if you stay organized and ask questions when things don't make sense.
Physics 142 is a tough class for non-physics majors. Dr. Berland is an decent professor, but his lectures werent as clear or intuitive as I was hoping. Test questions are all-or-nothing, you lose 25% with each wrong answer (all math based). In person lectures felt half-baked with only a few students attending. Final was fair but hard.
Dr. Berland's exams and final were very straightforward and simple. The labs were also graded nicely, and the lab final was quite easy. If you understand the material to a decent level, it's very easy to pull of an A in this class. He won't test you on stuff he doesn't cover.
220 is a tough course and a constant grind but Dr. Berland tries his best to help you through it. Although he may seem cold at first, he's considerate and accessible, and very helpful during office hours. Some of his video lectures have errors and could use a remake, but overall he tries hard to lessen the confusion and stress students may feel.
I genuinely dont understand how some people actually like this professor. The exams are insanely hard and the professor is not even nice; he will sometimes yell and blame on you for things. There is no such thing as "accommodation" in his line of teaching. Try not to take any of his classes, unless you want to kill your GPA for fun.
Horrible teacher. Lazy. Terrible attitude. YouTube and the Textbook will teach you Physics better than this man. At least his exams are a lot easier and straightforward. However, the WebAssign format making them all or nothing makes it incredibly stressful.
Tests questions are fair, but the webassign formatting is terrible, easily tanking my grade because this format does not work for me. Berland doesnt care if you are struggling and is a super condescending. And its sad, because I enjoyed the content I learned this semester, I just had a poor professor who ruined the entire experience for me.
This class is hard. Dr. Berland makes an effort to be very accessible to answer questions. For someone who is unfamiliar with the topics studies, I can easily see how this class can be considered significantly hard to get an A in.
If you are ready to self-teach, this a great course for you, but for me, that's not my ideal learning style. As well, the webassign tests are absolutely ridiculous, I have never experienced something so unfair and nerve-wracking ever in my STEM career to date.
Dr. Berland was hands down the most caring and supportive pre-med teacher I had during my time at Emory. If you do the practice problems, go to office hours and ask Dr. Berland your questions you 100% will succeed in this course! I was always terrible at physics but Dr. Berland helped me understand it and actually feel confident going into a test.
Dr. Berland offers both asynchronous and synchronous lectures for the class, so you can pick whether to come to class or not. Weirdly enough, the asynchronous lectures are more effective than his synchronous ones, which can be boring. The WebAssign exams are brutal and unforgiving, and he offered little sympathy to those that didn't do well.
Dr. Berland is extremely narcissistic and rude to students. During class, office hours, and exams he would be extremely condescending to students who ask questions and he is terrible at lecturing. His testing format is horrific yet he doesn't listen to CONSTANT student complaints about it. Consider taking 152 instead to avoid him, save your GPA.
Dr. Berland gets a bad rap. He is very forthright with class expectations. Use lectures and office hours to understand material, because he teaches content in a way that makes outside sources less helpful. Exams reflect HIS teaching methods, so learn his approach to physics. Exams are fair based on this, but WebAssign does require a learning curve.
this class was not as bad as it seems. I actually liked Berland and his willingness to work with students through problems. took this as a freshman and I only took one non-AP physics class in HS (hopefully that's encouraging lol). know how to do every question on the practice exams and D.M. problems on webassign before exams and you're chillin
PHYS 220 is definitely a difficult course especially if you haven't taken multi and linear. The quizzes are fair and you can always reference a full lecture recording from the prior year if you aren't confident in a certain topic. The textbook and isn't always the best resource since Dr. Berland writes all the quiz and final questions himself.
If you have the ability to exempt out of this class or take it with another professor, I highly recommend doing so. Dr. Berland is one of the worst professors I've had at Emory. Although his class is a fairly easy A, he assigns a lot of busy-work and unnecessary assignments, he refuses to use Canvas, and his lectures are always off-topic.
The content in 220 is heavy and difficult but Dr. Berland gives really easy tests. 8 midterms and 1 final are super straightforward. Only teach some superficial things about each topic without going deeper. If you're solid in math, you can just read the textbook to learn way more things than going to the lectures. He's a really nice professor.
Dr. Berland is tough, and so is physics in general, but he really does care about helping students with the difficulties of learning physics. He explains concepts clearly and as abstract as they are, and doesn't oversimplify them, which IMO helps with applying them to different problems. Reach out for help if you need it and take advice he gives!
His explanations of concepts and teaching was clear, however, he gave us an unreasonable number of assignments, along with 8 midterms. The tests were all very fair and pretty easy, including the final, but I didn't enjoy his class because of the sheer amount of work. He wasn't bad, but he wasn't great.
Explains concepts in an insanely convoluted way, so self-study is basically necessary. Also a midterm not even 2 weeks into the semester, wtf?
Can't explain concepts in an understandable way at all. Technical difficulties every class, and on top of this, very condescending during office hours. Would 100% avoid!
Don't take this class. You are never given review classes and there is such a disconnect between what's taught in class and what's on exams. Tests make up the majority of your grade and they are never curved so be aware.
He's been teaching for 23 yrs yet hasn't figured out how to give organized, informative lectures that encompass the hw/test material. The course material itself is difficult but it is understandable with self studying using outside resources. OH are not helpful unless you wanna be belittled and does not care about his students! also the ponytail :/
It's unfortunate that there's no other option to take this class with another professor. His lectures are so confusing/disorganized to the point where going to class was less productive than me just self teaching myself the content using the textbook and youtube videos. His exams are not reflective of lecture content and he's pretty condescending.
Put simply, Keith Berland's lectures are as useless as nipples on a man. You would learn more simply reading the textbook during lecture than actually paying attention to him and his hoola hoop. The "M0" test a few weeks after start of semester is unnecessary and dumb. Worst professor at Emory in my experience. I despise him and his manbun.
Berland's lectures have no direction or plan whatsoever. He rambles on wherever his mind takes him and is unclear in his explanations. Reaching out to him outside of class is a hit or miss. He's pretty moody and the fate of your grade could depend on how he's feeling that day. Don't waste your time, study from the book.
Only way to do well (if you aren't super confident in physics) is to make use of all resources: lectures, WebAssign homework, textbook, mentor sessions, office hours, sample exams. At first Dr. Berland can seem offstandish, but don't let that stop you from engaging with him and asking for his assistance. Deep down he really does want you to do well
Doesn't make sense. Lectures aren't reflective of the exams and the HW's aren't really it either. Barely and I mean barely like mostly 0 partial credit. Studying from the book is somewhat helpful. I don't recommend this course to my least liked person; especially if you've never taken physics before college. Wish he gave better q's for hard tests.
It seems that Dr. Berland is actually really trying to help us and teach, but it just doesn't work that well and everyone's pretty confused during lecture. You have to do a lot of self study for this class, but the plus side is that he's very easy to reach outside of class through Teams.
He is a terrible lecturer. However, he is far more helpful during office hours. You could probably just not go to lecture, and only go to office hours, and do better than someone who only went to lecture. Homework and LA sessions are integral to success as well.
Although he is a well-meaning person who wanted students to do well, I found that I, and many of my peers, simply did not understand what he was trying to convey. I'd recommend taking Physics 152 if you have calc 1 credit
He does such an awful job of explaining things in class that you'll get more out of it if you skip class and just watch his videos or read the textbook instead. Every time he speaks he sound condescending. He also likes making life harder by not posting solutions or practice exams unless explicitly asked for.
Truly one of the professors of all time
Berland offers Midnight Sessions (at 10pm) because he's busy teaching adult fiddle classes right before. Students don't like the sessions, but he says we do. classmates stopped going because they're less than helpful and we shouldn't be expected to spend time with a professor that late at night, it's uncomfortable.
when i'm in a hating my students competition and my opponents are mulford and berland
Look, Dr. Berland is not amazing, but he is certainly not horrible. He teaches the concepts like a textbook and offers a lot of time to meet with him outside of class. His OneNote notebook is a very good idea and its very well organized with lots of resources. Not the best prof ever, but not the worst.
Berland isn't a great professor, at all. His lectures aren't very helpful and I learned far more just reading the textbook. Additionally, his exams are not reflective at all of the Webassign homework that we completed weekly. I'd recommend studying every single resource available to ensure your best chance of getting a good grade in the class.
Berland's probably a nice guy, but he often comes across as condescending. He can't explain concepts well at all, but that doesn't stop him from trying with weird demonstrations! Lecture is a slog to sit through, fell asleep often. You may actually be better off reading the textbook. LOTS of material, stay on top of homeworks and study regularly.
Berland gives very minimal partial credit on exams, despite the difficulty of the content, his lectures not very helpful for actually understanding the material, does not seem very interested in actually teaching or assisting students, and got annoyed when students asked for extra problems to practice for an exam.
Dr. Berland was honestly super helpful if you ask questions and go to office hours. The class is definitely tough but if you put in the work it is doable!
If you redo all practice problems he gives, you'll be fine! He rambles occasionally, but also took time to learn our names in office hours and tried to get to know us- rare for a stem professor of a class that size. Also made final optional and said it could only help us, and has been very understanding of current events. Not a bad prof at all!!
man SUCKS. condescending and doesn't really teach. the textbook explains things better than him. don't go to lecture in person and just watch the recordings on 2x speed. no partial credit and he takes pride in having a C average after the curve. would be so much better if he gave more practice problems than j webassign & gave partial credit
One of the worst professors I have taken at Emory. The content is challenging enough without his confusing, boring, rambling lectures and terrible ponytail. Exams are not representative of the homework assignments. I never missed lecture, always took notes and engaged, and still was better off reviewing later with Khan Academy.
Disclaimer: I do not course bcs the platform does not allow it. This professor was horrible and the most insensitive/two-faced man on the face of the earth. He literally had someone record him the first day while giving a pep talk to the class. Once the camera was off, his true colors came out. Told a girl having a panic attack: "That ain't fun".
Unique style of teaching that used Microsoft teams instead of canvas. Not the best lectures, but structure of class was good at keeping you on track. You have to stay on top if but his exams were very straightforward and VERY similar to textbook questions. Also very accessible for extra help and office hours. Cares about his students doing well.
He cared A LOT about how his students did but didn't really know where to direct that. Exams are extremely easy and homework is optional, and you're only tested on computation. Oddly enough the hardest part about his exams was the arithmetic, most answers were strange fractions. Final was not graded because I already had an A which was nice.
Berland's lectures can be hit or miss, but the textbook is a big help. Stay on top of assignments and use all available resources, like unstuckstudy, for the best chance at a good grade. Tough class, but manageable with effort.
Berland is the type of guy you think of when your friend says some people shouldn't be teachers. He's not kind, provides zero help during exams, talks to his students like they're five years old, responding to questions with phrases like "it should be pretty obvious". His "partial grading" is cruel. Emory is already tough, no need for this teacher.
Even though it might not seem that way, Dr. Berland really cares about his students' success. There are multiple ways to see or communicate with him after class. It's true that his lectures are confusing, but so is the textbook. That's the nature of physics. Do all the practice he gives (maybe more than once) and you'll be OK on the exams.
Avoid taking this class. He is a horrible professor and this class will tank your gpa. Take it over the summer or another school.
He's a caring professor who gets back to you quickly whenever you send him a message. Sometimes, he rambles about class topics, and lectures can be boring from time to time. Lecture notes and videos are always posted and very organized. Exams are easy if you study
Lowkey kinda mid. Kinda bad. Kinda good. It is what it is.
lectures were pretty unhelpful, i had to self-teach myself the material with the textbook.
Please save yourself! Take Segre over the summer, as berland is perhaps the most condescending and useless prof at Emory. Exams are magnitudes more difficult than anything he has every mentioned in class and he solves problems his "own" way, which are confusing and contradictory to conventional methods. truly a harrowing experience!
This man is the woest professor I have ever had at Emory. I asked a question at office hours, and he condescendingly said “that's or
very mean professor and not easy to follow in class.
Berland might be the worst experience of my academic career. This is going to be my first non-A class in college even after getting an A in 141. His lectures made no sense, his teaching methods were very unconventional, and his exams were 10X harder than anything we saw in class, or even the practice exams he gave out. Take this class in the summer
Graduating but Berland is the worst professor I have had at Emory. His lectures are not good, although maybe not the worst, but his condescension towards students as well as his inability to answer even simple questions is unrivaled. “I don't understand why you don't understand” was a catchphrase of his, would not recommend.
Condescending if you're confused. Very little partial credit & few practice materials that reflect exam difficulty. Gets a 2 b/c he offers ways to get back points. You can tell he cares, just has a poor way of showing it. Study by rewatching lectures, redoing the HW, and reworking past years exams. That's your best bet for getting an ok grade.
Extremely difficult class. Only made it through bc of Khan Academy and Organic Chem Tutor on Youtube. Exams are incredibly difficult. Highly recommend taking this class over summer as transfer credit if you are pre-med. Don't take Berland. I only did okay bc of massive curves. I have no clue what happened in this class.
Dr. Berland's lectures ain't great, but his strategies are quite effective and simplify 142's abstractness. The problem is that HW is way easier than exams, and he grades the latter on an all or nothing scale. Curves are class dependent and scores are averaged to only a C/C-. If you want an A, then be ready to invest a lot of time into this class.
Least favorite professor taken so far. PHYS142 was definitely more interesting than 141 in terms of content, but my lord, this man's class shaved off at least 5 yrs of my lifespan. If I were to redo it again, I would def go to LA sessions and focus on the lecture content (not all of the textbook is relevant, tbh).
Horrible professor genuinely the worst i've taken at emory--did not explain the concepts, clearly does not "believe" in partial (even tho thats most of physics), and just no compassion for his students. If i can recommend one things, it's to not take his class--take phys 152, take over the summer, do whatever you need to to avoid this professor
Physics classes teaching math concepts students may not be familiar with should not be taught as a flipped classroom. Students are expected to teach self all content, lectures are going over bits and pieces of readings from previous week. The only reason I'm still taking this class is because it's major-required.
Professor Berland is one of the most caring profs I've had. He wants his students to succeed, and will adjust his teaching styles to do so. For this freshman seminar, grades consisted of weekly journals and a final presentation.
