Worst teacher ever! He is totally useless...I had to learn everything from the book and from the tutors in the tutoring center. I got an A+ in Calc 2 and I still couldn't get him. He just doesn't know how to teach. His class is all about the concepts and the homework is all about problems yet he never teaches you how to relate them.
Heyward is a great person. But as a teacher, he really doesn't get the point across very well. Attendance counts as part of your grade, but attending class has no benefit because his notes are horrible and his lectures are even worse. Webassigns are due before the lesson is taught in class, so I had to get a TON of help from the tutorial center.
does a lot of interesting demonstrations in class however these in no way prepare you for his test. His lectures get less and less useful as the year progresses. On my first day he told us reading the textbook really helps your grade. Its true if i hadn't read the textbook i would have failed all the test. Interesting dude but not bad teacher
Other people said it all. Good person, pretty funny guy. Doesn't teach what you need to know to do good. Class avg for first test was 55. Get constant emails about problems with homework or errors in grading.
Outstanding professor
I guess I'm going against the grain a little here but I actually really thought prof heyward was very good. Maybe it's a personal style issue but he was much better than my py211 prof. I definitely recommend him.
Heyward is a good instructor that is very helpful. He responds to emails and WA inquiries in a timely manner. His tests are well thought out in that there are quantitative questions and conceptual questions designed to really test whether you "get" it. Take notes, do the WA, read the etext and if you don't panic you should get an A. I like him.
Great teacher. His demos are interesting & helps me remember the concepts very well. Tests are very conceptual & some w/ easy calculation if you got the concept behind it. Physics II is hard, but he makes it very easy to get the concepts! Didn't even have to read the book all that much, only his lecture notes. I definitely recommend him!
Very nice guy, sweet-natured, very helpful, loves his work .Class is HARD, but he will always help in a VERY non-condescending way (can't say the same for physics tutors), and responds quickly to emails.Tests can be tricky, the 20-question, multi-choice only tests make it brutal.I'm halfway in love with the dude, though, he's just that awesome.
Very nice and helpful. Really wants you to understand the material. If your struggle, go to his office hours, he will repeat the lecture over again until you understand it. The test are difficult if you don't practice.
Nice guy. If you don't understand the material go to the office hours and I guarantee you will leave with 10x more knowledge than you had before. Does a lot of example problems and a lot of demonstrations in class. The tests are HARD but they are doable. I definitely recommend him.
Dr Heyward is extremely nice and definitely will go out of his way to help students. The multiple choice tests are hard, but your HW grade and lab grades will help. Going to class was enjoyable (he does a lot of cool demos). This is the only NCSU physics professor I've heard positive things about, definitely take him if possible.
Dr Heyward is great! He is truly passionate about physics and does everything he can to help students understand. I was freaking out before taking physics cause I did terrible in Chem, but Heyward explains material in an interesting way and always uses demonstrations to help students grasp material and make it as interactive as possible.
I was really nervous for physics going into the class but Heyward is an amazing teacher, probably the best I've had here at State. I would definitely recommend going to class because his explanations are really clear.
This class was very tough and I dedicated my whole time to it. Web Assign is due every week or so and it goes over nothing we learned in class. Lab is very easy and understandable, not so much for lecture. The textbook did not help much either. Dr. Heyward did demonstrations in class, but it wasn't really understandable or pertinent. WORST class ev
Heyward tried out the online book with webassign for my class. I used it maybe 3 times. Webassign assignments twice a week, but they are not there to mess with you. He is really helpful. Heyward is adorable in his own geeky way and i thoroughly enjoyed going to class. Random clicker questions for attendance points.
Excellent lecturer. Every concept he demonstrated and every method for problem-solving he taught in class appeared on one test or another. That said, I found it absolutely necessary to attend class. If you go to class, do the homework, do the practice tests, and visit him during office hours with whatever questions you have, you're golden.
I love Heyward! I took him for both 211 and 212 and I couldn't be happier that I did. If you want to pass his tests, be sure to look at the example problems that he posts on moodle on your own time; they often mirror test questions. He explicitly tells you what you need to do to do well in the class. If you need help go to his office hours!
Dr. Heyward was a great teacher! Very humble and receptive to students' questions. Physics is by no means easy but he made the class interesting and sparked some personal interest for me in the subject.
Only had him for 212, wish I had him for 211 also. His demonstrations are awesome and his tests are really similar to the practice tests he sends out. Also make your exam sheet from the "pointers" sheet he makes and the tests are a breeze. Awesome teacher, one of the best I've had.
Dr. Heyward is a great teacher and a really nice guy. Physics is not my strength AT ALL but he made lectures really interesting. His demos are great. I thought his tests were hard but he makes it very clear what will be on the test. If you make your study guide from his review sheets, look at examples on moodle, and attend lectures, you'll do fine!
Heyward is the best physics professor at NCSU, period. Super nice and funny. His practice tests give you a good idea of what will be on exams and you go over the entire thing during class - as long as people ask questions. A lot of homework due before and after classes, but it really helps you understand the material. His demo's are lit though.
Dr. Heyward is such a sweet heart. Just a genuinely nice guy. Very eager to help you understand what you're learning. Highly recommended for physics I & II.
Love Dr Heyward, I struggle in physics and he was always willing to help me to the best of his abilities. The class is very tough but Heyward always brightens it up with demonstrations and jokes and makes the lectures a little more interesting. Beware the tests though all the wrong answers are usually on the exam as other choices.
He's awesome and very helpful. I go to him during his office hours and ask him a ton of questions. His class his hard but he's amazing.
I absolutely love Dr. Heyward, he is such a sweet heart! He knows physics is a hard class and does the best he can to make it enjoyable by cracking jokes and doing entertaining demonstrations! I would 100% recommend taking him if you can!
Good lectures overall, tests were straightforward. Lots of WebAssigns, which suck but aren't too hard. Kind of discombobulated--started with flipped class then ran out of video lectures, so went back to normal (which I liked better). Teaches a lot through examples and practice problems. Lots of demonstrations and a sense of humor, which was fun.
The best prof to take physics with at State. That being said, it's still hard. My tip is to take consistent notes while doing the homework (and there is a LOT of them) and don't be afraid to ask him for help. Has great demonstrations and genuinely loves what he teaches and tries to make it understandable to those new to the subject.
Wish I had gone to his office hours all along bc they are group office hours where I felt like what we learned in class usually didn't help with HW problems except for the conceptual part. Test ?'s are all hw questions. So studying takes forever bc lots of HW! He is a good teacher who is very passionate about physics.
Heyward is the bomb. Great professor and beautiful man
Heyward is too good for this earth, we don't deserve him. He is the type of person you would want to visit the zoo with on a Sunday afternoon, even though zoos suck. His lectures are clear and his jokes were the highlight of my day. Precious man. A true gentleman and a scholar. See ya Buster.
Hayward is hilarious. He makes teaching physics enjoyable. He does clickers for participation. If you watch the videos and do the homework, you should be more than prepared for the exams. He is really approachable during office hours too if you don't understand a certain concept.
When God said "Let there be light," he created Keith Heyward.
Heyward is hands down one of the best professor's I've had at nc state. His lectures are clear and easy to understand. You'll be doing homework every other day for physics but it pays off and you retain it better. My suggestion? TAKE HEYWARD.
Heyward is great at explaining physics. I HIGHLY recommend you take his class. You'll be doing homework almost every other day but it pays off on the exams.
His flipped class format requires a little more work on your part, but he makes up for it by spending time in class developing strategies to solve problems so you dont struggle on the online homework. A fair bit of work, but if you do it and understand it the tests are a breeze! He is also very approachable if you have any questions.
MY FAV PROFESSOR FOR SURE!!! Super nice and helpful, the materials are easy to understand. I hate natural science but he makes me love physics
I was awful in PY211 but he made PY212 awesome. His video lectures are so easy to follow and his in class explanations break down any questions left. I only wish I had had him for 211. He's super responsive to emails and helpful for any questions. His exams are only 69% so that gives lots of room for other things to save a grade if necessary.
Physics is a hard class but Heyward is so thorough with his lecture videos and in class problems. The class is flipped but he goes over problems in class that help you understand material. He takes attendence and does tophat which helps gives you points to cushion test grades. He is the best physics professor and I highly recommend taking him.
I love Dr. Heyward!! He stepped up and took over our PY 211 class last semester when our other prof left and he immediately made the course so much better! This semester, he has remained an awesome prof! He allows cheat sheets on exams, makes lecture fun, and is very easy to reach. There is quite a bit of HW for this class, but it's really helpful!
switching to the online model, he was the WORST professor. exams got extremely hard, and it become too tedious.
Dr. Heyward is an amazing professor. Do TONS of practice problems, watch ALL the videos, and ask for help and you will do well. Even switching to the online, he gave you all the necessary resources to succeed. Final is a lot simpler than the regular tests, but still studies for about two weeks. LOVE HIM!!!!!! he is pure.
I took his 5 week online summer session, which was a tough timeframe, but I loved his class. His lecture videos are thorough, he provides lots of examples, and is helpful when you need it. Lots of WebAssigns, but they really help prepare for the tests, which imo are easier than the homework. Lets you make a formula sheet. Super sweet and funny guy
Irvine (Keith) Heyward, is an amazing professor. I'm not good at physics, but he makes it very easy to understand and "dumbs it down" well. If you go to lectures and complete the homework, the tests should not be difficult at all (easier almost). There is a bit of homework, but it helps with tests. One of the best and nicest professors I've had.
I hate flipped teaching format but prof. Heyward makes it bearable. He really loves physics and truly wants everyone to understand it as well. Tests were really easy, make sure you take the practice test beforehand though. Also gives a free 48 hour extension for all webassign assignments, which is great. I am about to take him again for PY 212 <3
Dr. Heyward is AMAZING. Being a flipped course, it may seem like a lot of work, but it definitely helps in the long run with all the extra practice. He is very good with explanations and classes are always fun with the many demonstrations he does. The only reason I got a B+ is because I did not do too well on the final and it is weighted heavily.
Dr. Heyward is a GREAT choice. He's really good at explaining material and is super nice/approachable during office hours if you are confused or need clarification. Physics was challenging especially since it was accelerated, but the webassign problems really prepare you for the exams. If you can do those without notes you're golden for the exams.
Dr. Heyward was great for PY 211. I was so afraid to take this class but I actually understood it so well. Taking it over the summer was very aggressive but doable. Heyward genuinely loves physics and you can tell by the way he teaches. He does a great job of breaking things down and trying to make it as simple as possible.
Dr. Heyward was fantastic for PY 211, but not as great for 212. 212 was far more difficult and not as well organized as 211. My electrical engineering bf couldn't even help me with some of the circuitry problems, which should be telling for a class intended for life science majors. It felt like we weren't given all of the formulas we needed.
Dr. Heyward is an outstanding professor! Physics was challenging for me, but he provided several resources to help everyone succeed. Please go to his office hours! He will take the time, provide feedback, and give suggestions to help you get your desired grade. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS!
physics is HARD (hence my rating), but Heyward is probably the best professor in the department. He gives you a LOT of homework but you need it to do well. Large time investment but if you put in the effort you will do well. multiple choice tests and will maybe curve. Taking him again for 212 (I'm terrified) but glad he is the professor! Good luck!
I loved Dr. Heyward as a professor. Physics is very hard, but he made it enjoyable and really tried to make everything easy to understand and accessible. The material is very hard, but he makes it manageable and I really enjoyed taking his class. Highly recommend you take physics with him if you can!
Dr. Heyward is a great professor, he explains the topics really well and is always available to help you figure out problems. He gives practice tests before the exams and does some cool demonstrations in class. There is a lot of homework and this class will def take some time, but Heyward is a good professor to take it with
Dr. Heyward is one of the best professors I have had. Physics is naturally very hard but he gives you everything you need to know. He works through examples of each problem type so you are prepared for any problem he asks. Exams are usually a little easier than the webassign homework and the final was more straightforward than the regular exams.
Dr Heyward is awesome. I took the flipped lecture and it wasn't bad at all. Its like 5-30 minutes of lecture before each class and a small pre and after class assignment. Tests are multiple choice and doable if you can identify the type of problem. Pay attention and go to class (even though attendance is only 1% of your grade) and you'll succeed.
One of the best teachers I've had! Super sweet and well-organized. The class is super clear, just stay on top of homework assignments and use the resources on Moodle to your advantage and you should be good.
Solid professor, definitely not a fan of the flipped classroom. Only issue I found was that he didn't teach how to distinguish between problem types. Everyday we would go through 1 or 2 problem types, but to really nail the concepts down you have to do all the provided practice tests and problems (& sometimes more). Final is easier than midterms.
Physics is a hard class and Professor Heyward does well teaching it. The flipped classroom does require extra effort but is helpful as long as you keep up with it. He is helpful with questions outside of class and the midterms are similar to the practice tests. It is really important to keep up with pre class assignments and homework.
He does so well in explaining the concept but physics is just a really hard subject. He draws everything on a tablet, creates his own videos, and he eats. The homework sucks- they're harder than the ones on the test and lecture, but they're your best study tool, even better than the practice exams.
If you're going to take physics at NC State, take it with Dr. Heyward. His lectures always involve demonstrations & the flipped-style of the class was something I liked the most, as the in-person questions really helped me understand the material. Make sure to do the practice tests & don't be afraid to ask him questions. Would recommend!
Heyward is probably the best physics professor nc state has, however that does not make this class any easier. I was putting 20+ hours a week into this class and barely passing. Its a flipped format class so all notes, preclass, and homework is done outside of class and then in class you do a couple example problems. (and daily quizzes)
I was terrified to take this class but he really does his best to set you up to do well. He gives you practice tests, walks through problems in class, and is very accessible outside of class. There is a lot of homework but it helps pull your grade up. Each lecture involves several demonstrations as well.
Really nice and made physics easy to understand. Allows a cheat sheet for each test. Has office hours every day the week before final exams start.
Dr. Heywards class is not easy. But physics is never going to be easy. What makes him such a great professor is the fact that he gives you so many resources to learn in the classroom, outside of it, and in his office hours. He is organized, fair, and a clear communicator. Kinda funny too! No complaints.
I would not recommend as Summer Session. But he is a really good professor. He answers all the questions you have. There are a lot of things that boost your grade. The homework is pretty straight forward. If you ask questions and do the work. Then it isn't too bad. His exams are pretty straight forward and just like the practice exams.
He's cool. I had him over summer and though it was hard Heyward made it a bit easier. Going in I was nervous but my success is due to the efficiency of his course structure and the resources he provided.
Dr. Heyward is great for PY211! The online summer session is definitely tough, but his class structure and teaching style are a big help. As long as you don't get behind and try your hardest to understand the material, then you're smooth sailing! The homework's honestly harder than the exams, so if you can get them down, then you're fine!
Prof. Heyward made physics easy. He makes it clear what you should do to succeed, has great lectures, and very fair tests. Take him if you can!
Dr. Heyward has easily been the best professor I have had in my three years at NCSU. He clearly has a passion for physics, but also for teaching. He makes lectures interesting and, while physics can be a daunting subject, he obviously cares and really tries to make sure his students succeed. Homework is a LOT but exams aren't bad. I recommend him!
Physics is a really hard subject but Dr. Heyward makes it so much easier. He makes it super easy to understand and his journal questions are just like the exams. I totally recommend him. He is the best professor I have had a state so far! Take him to make your life easier.
He may be the "best of the worst" but the flipped class set up sucks. You must teach yourself all of the material before class which is reserved for practice problems and in-class quizzes. The homework after class takes up to a few hours to complete on webassign (15%). Majority of grade are MC exams (3, no partial credit, 42%) and a final (30%).
Mr. Heyward is hands-down one of the best professors at State. He has great knowledge of physics and loves to teach it. He is very kind and will definitely make you laugh every class. If you watch the pre-lecture videos, pay attention in class, and do the homework YOURSELF, there is no way you can fail. His explanations are also very clear. 20/10
Class is flipped so you're required to learn material before class. However, Dr. Heyward is one of the best professors at the university. Physics is hard but Dr. Heyward made it easy with the resources he provides and with his entertaining and enjoyable lectures, which included demonstration. He is also one of the nicest professors as well.
Dr. Heyward is a very kind and accessible professor who provides endless resources and materials for his students. I believe the flipped teaching style is truly what taught me physics, and the in-person sessions solidified the material. His lectures and demonstrations are helpful and his office hours are one of your best resources.
Dr. Heyward was amazing! The class was a flipped style, so there were lectures for each module before class, with preclass assignments, and postclass assignments after class. There are random pop quizzes and an attendance code for each class. This class was a lot of work for me, but Dr. Heyward made it easier to learn, I definitely recommend!
I don't like physics, but Dr. Heyward made a difficult class more manageable. There is a good amount of homework, but it really does help prepare you better for class and the exams. He is very willing to help both in and out of class through the Moodle forum and office hours.
TAKE HEYWARD FOR PHYSICS! Loved the flipped classroom, go to class to work on practice. Study for tests by reviewing HW's, practice test, and previous tests taken. Stay on top of work because class is fast-paced.
Dr. Heyward was one of the best professors I've had. Physics is a difficult course, so I wouldn't say it's easy. If you put work into studying you should be fine.
Best professor I've ever had at NCSU. He makes it very clear what is expected of you at the beginning of the semester. Exams are worth a large portion of your grade, but his practice exams will prepare you well and are typically harder than the actual exam.
he knows what he's teaching and explains problems well but I wouldn't have him again due to personal complications with learning in a flipped classroom format. I think flipped classes are terrible, but it depends on how you learn. you watch videos and do notes out of class, but attending the lectures is important to learn how to solve the problems.
Physics is going to be hard, but Dr. Heyward makes this class so much better. Clear explanations of problems, extremely responsive to emails, and comes to class everyday excited to teach and often with new contraptions to demonstrate. I didnt think it was possible to look forward to attending physics lectures(?) Taking him again for 212!!
Amazing professor, super passionate and has a ton of demonstrations throughout class that help you easily understand complex ideas. Insane amount of homework though, and it's a flipped class. I could not keep up for a good part of the semester due to other heavy workload classes, so definitely take it easy and focus on this class more!
Dr. Heyward is one of my favorite professors ever! He truly made sure that his students understood the material and would always make the classes engaging. It's hard stuff for sure, but Dr Heyward makes the learning process very fun! There are in-class quizzes sometimes and there are lots of practice problems so exams aren't surprising.
Physics is tough, but Dr. Heyward makes it feel like a breeze. Was pretty scared coming in, but his practice questions and overall welcoming personality helped immensely when preparing for tests. He had funny and frequent in-class demonstrations as well.
Don't underestimate how tiring the night exams are. I only ever drank coffee for them. 3 midterms, lowest averages with final. Daily HW. Put in the HARD work, do the practice exams, practice in-class problems, and HW problems, and you will do better than I did. Dr. Heyward is wonderful & makes it doable, but this class is no less overwhelming.
Professor Heyward is easily the best professor I've had so far. He does a great job of explaining complicated topics, and clearly is very passionate about what he teaches. Tests are pretty easy as long as you study, and the practice tests are very similar to what you'll actually get. I was worried about physics going in and it became my fav class
Dr. Heyward is the perfect example of how a professor of a VERY difficult class should be. He is kind, down to earth, explains things well, and I wouldn't want to take physics with anyone else. The class is terribly difficult and will consume your semester, but Dr. Heyward himself is great.
I absolutely loved taking this class. Physics has been really difficult for me, but Prof Heyward structures the class in a way that it's doable if you put in the work. I really appreciated that he was willing to meet with me and help outside of class, and that actually helped me turn my grade around. You CANNOT let yourself get behind!
Dr. Heyward is one of my favorite professors at NCSU. He is truly so kind and cares about each of his students. He wants to see everyone succeed in his class and provides lots of resources. I would not be intimidated to take PY211. Yes, you do have to put in some work, but practice the homework problems (!!!) and you will do great on your exams!
Great professor. Funny and explains things well. But the class is a lot of work. Flipped lectures, daily homework, and exams are worth a lot of your grade. No curves or extra credit. You can't be lazy with this one.
Professor Heyward is the best! If you are struggling, reach out to him- he believes in all of his students. Just stay on top of everything. It is so easy to get behind because there are pre and post class assignments for every class but DO NOT because it is hard to catch up. Tests are way easier than the practice exams tho. 20 questions MC.
