I thought this professor was great. He made the material fun and interesting even when the subjects were dull. The quizes were easy and both the midterm and final were curved. He provided typed notes on Webct as well. There is one paper, but he is a fair grader and it only had to be 3 to 4 pages.

Great teacher and great class! Just show up for class and you will pass. Book not needed to pass course, but if you want and A then buy it. 2 tests, 6 quizes, extra credit. He makes it interesting and shows movies in class sometimes.

Very funny and willing to help anyone. Don't get turned off by the paper...he is very easy if you put the effort. If you get to class early, he will show a movie or something related to the topic. He does give answers to some webct quizzes and test questions. Very cool!

this guy was awesome. real funny, made the boring stuff funny. i think the class itself was kinda dull, but prof. houk definately made the class interesting. he has 5 quizzes (which u find out about by going to class) and 3 tests. quizzes are based off of notes (that he posts online) and he gives review for the tests.

A great introduction to the Comm. dept. for any comm. major. He's hilarious and he makes the material interesting. The highlight of the course was when he showed us a Charlie Chaplin movie. Don't have to read the book. Just study his powerpoints, and you're sure to get an A. Tests are mild, but 95% of questions are straight from notes and lecture.

I loved this class, it was fun and he was just an all around cool prof. I never studied and made a B-, probably would have done better if I went to class more often than I did.

Great professor and cool guy. Goes off subject and talks about other things a lot, but is still interesting and somewhat relative to the lecture. Class is pretty easy as long as you pay attention.

Witty professor. Makes learing the subject fun. Easy to approach if you have questions about class, subject, test, etc... I felt inspired to work hard in all my classes after attending his course. This is not a blow off course; you will need to pay attention in class. If you follow his instructions you will do well in the class.

GREAT PROFESSOR, best ever! Best professor I've ever had. Textbook is not required, all the notes are online, but go to class just to hear his jokes and wit. He's a huge Simpsons fan and makes a lot of references to it. Plus, you get to learn about movies and actually watch them--it was the best day of class all semester!

BEST TEACHER EVER! Give him a pay raise! He's so funny and smart and loves what he does. I like his stories too. His tests are like the review, know everything on the review you'll ace the tests. Go to class people he gives away freebies to quizzes and test! Discussion are funny. You don't want to skip this class, you'll miss out hilariousness.

Great teacher and great person. Houk is passionate about what he teaches and makes everything highly interesting; one of the most inspiring educators at UH, I wish all were like him. I thought this class was going to be a fun and easy Communications class. I was completely wrong! The lectures are extremely boring, and they put you to sleep. He teaches off of powerpoint all the time. You cover about a Chapter a class. Book is not neccessary but recommended. No homework. 3 tests, one paper, and one final. Tests are hard.

He's a fun teacher, class is never really boring, he tries to keep it entertaining and uses up to date information to teach.

TAKE IT! Class lectures are very entertaining, he gives you the power point (word, pdf) slides of every class, review sheet..its really easy. trust me, you'll like it.

Attendance isn't mandatory but he gives answers to trick questions& bonus questions on the test in class so you NEED to go.This makes the difference between an A and a B.Tests r easy,his class is high school format;gives you a review sheet&post notes online.You do have to write an Essay but if u mind your grammar you'll do just fine.

This class was enjoyable. I wasn't terribly interested in the subject--it was a prereq. for my minor--but Prof. Houk is really funny. The tests are pretty easy, especially if you do the online practice tests, and he gives tons of extra credit. The project is easy too, and it was kind of fun.

Prof Houk is hysterical, understanding and definitely makes COMM interesting. He posts notes online from his lecture powerpoints, he gives extra credit, and its a relatively easy A if you listen in class and study for exams. He also gives the option for you to skip the final if you're happy with your overall grade without it.

MY favorite teacher I have ever had at U of H. You can really tell he loves what he teaches. attendance is not mandatory. but he is a great speaker so you wont mind going to class. He is great. And he is really cute.

Prof. Houk is fantastic. I HIGHLY recommend him! His lectures/class is fun, he always tells funny little stories that (oddly) help you remember the material. Tests are easy-he gives review sheet. All his tests are from his slides. Even gives out answers to what needs to be study for the test. As for the final, its just cumulative from all the 3 previous test you had taken.

This class is super easy if you show up and listen. He posts the notes online, gives a review for each test, and posts chapter tests (not graded) to help you learn the material. I love this guy. Attendance isn't mandatory but he gives away answers in class so you might as well go. Plus, he is hilarious. Media&Society- good teacher, makes class interesting, offers bonus on tests so listen to his lecture. Doesn't take roll but it helps if you attend class. The project isn't exactly the funnest, but its doable.

He is the funniest teacher. Super entertaining and knows his crap. He's got these oldies jokes that sometimes leave you like 'huh' but he explains them. He gives test answers to those in class. Definitely take his class if you can!

Take him. Very rare to find professors like him. he strictly goes over what's required for the tests and is very knowledgeable about topics. He also keeps class entertaining by his outgoing personality. You'd be an idiot not to show up to his class every single day. the textbook is unnecessary unless you plan on never showing up to class.

I wish all my professors had his ability of teaching- I definitely recommend him. Exam reviews are a list of key words. The info from his PowerPoint is mostly from the book so if you attend class you won't really need it. TIP Record lecture and write the time and title for each change of silde- helps with finding review terms later. Have fun :)

Awesome professor! Hilarious and intriguing and super laid back. Class is straight forward; basically show up to class and your guaranteeing yourself bonus points. Plus, you can bump up your own grade by just visiting him during office hours. 3 exams, 1 paper and an exam you can exempt. Basically the easiest most interesting class I've had.

Loved this class! I took the mini-winter session for this class. The professor was so helpful and always available for questions. It does require effort, but well taught. I feared that I would fail since I knew nothing about HTML but it was explaine thoroughly and she provided other websites that offered more help, if needed. Overall: great class!

Houk is really great; if you attend class you are guranteed "bonus points" on the exams. He boosts your test 1 and 2 grades if you meet with him during office hours to discuss the exams. He's very helpful!! Overall, there are three exams, final is optional, and one mandatory paper/project. Easy course.

Houk is great. He brings lectures to life and he is extremely funny. He is a great teacher but will definitely make you work for it- this class is "easy" BUT he doesn't just hand out A's like candy. This was the one class that I looked forward to. His lectures were always entertaining. He's very music and movie oriented, and as someone who is as well, that was something I enjoyed. Attend lecture! have notes printed prior because he can go fast, knows lots of info, is approachable, book will be necessary as a study tool if you want to receive a high grade, he cancels a couple times to give u time to work, can feel like just memorization but material is interesting for the most part. Professor Houk is a great guy. He will no longer be teaching this course anymore, but for his new film students, TAKE HIM. He is AMAZING. I'm fairly sure his film class will be clear, fun and easy (as long as you show up). Glad I had him this semester.

Hstry of Cinema. Once/week 3hr class. Watched movie every class (most were boring). No roll call. Online chptr quiz every week (easy. not sure if it was on purpose but answer was 'A' 90% of time). 1 paper (easy. turned in half ass 4pg ppr n made a 'B'). 1 Final made up of Q's from the quizzes. Log quiz Q&A's n u got answer key 4 final. EASY CLASS!

10 online, 1 paper, & a final w/ questions from the quizzes. I missed a couple quizzes and turned in the paper late, but he still was willing to work with me to help my grade. He gives you a chance at the end to make up any quizzes you missed, & gives bonuses to the people who show up in class. This man is an understanding angel of a professor.

Super cool professor. Really chill and tells interesting stories during lectures, while still really knowledgeable about the subject. Basically an intelligent Nick from "New Girl." Should have gotten an A in here, but I didn't try. The bonus questions on the test he gives out are always interesting and make you wish you heard the story behind them.

Highly recommend. 10 online quizzes you can easily ace w/the textbook on hand (you can spend a lot of time looking up some answers though), attend class b/c he does have some quiz questions that you can only answer if you attended class, also to watch movies, 1 easy paper about analyzing 2 movies of your choice, reopened some quizzes at end of sem.

Took an independent study with Houk for my final semester. This was my 4th class with him. He is the best single aspect of my experience at UH. If you demonstrate respect and a willingness to learn and work, he will do everything he can to set you up for future success. If you want an easy A, you're in the wrong industry, and he'll let you know it.

Houk has a great knowledge base on film, the guy really knows about the history of each film, has great insight on why the film was made and the audience it was intended. The only slight against him is he is not at accessible as I have found other professors to be. I recommend rewatching each film and do all the readings to do well on the test.

Excellent Professor, this course is intense be warned, you are expected to memorize a huge amount of information which the tests are based off of, while in class you spend hours watching reference material, be prepared to invest 3 hours of extra work into studying for this course. Great material though and Houk gives get lectures, two thumbs up.

Professor Houk is very scatterbrained and becomes unfocused a lot. If you like a very structured class this may not be for you. However he is a fantastic teacher and lets you retake/correct all tests and projects. I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed his Non-Linear editing class.

Houk is a really nice guy and actually cares about the students. He is a little disorganized and assignment instructions aren't super clear, but he just wants you to put in the effort and be creative.

This guy changed my life. It is because of him that I am pursuing a doctorate. I took him several times, but one semester in particular, he had the worst batch of students I've ever seen, they really sucked. Nonetheless, he never gave up on his students. He is smart, dedicated and intense. Also, he has IMMENSE knowledge of cinema.

I've taken Houk for three years now and in all courses he's been caring, helpful, and obviously knowledgable. He's one of those life-long mentors and a good friend if you open up to him. He is hard on you if he feels you can do better so always put in the work. Fun projects always good for demo reels and visits from experienced Hollywood artists.

Professor Houk is a real gem. I had him for a synchronous online course and he, for the most part, knew his way around Teams and Zoom. His lectures are very interesting and he's just a really cool guy! Very approachable too. For this class, there are two exams and a movie presentation. Would definitely take this professor again!

I've had Houk a few times before and I've always enjoyed his classes. He gives good feedback and asked the class for feedback on what we feel we need to learn more about. He does go off on stories sometimes, but he still gets back to things. One thing is that he doesn't grade until the end of the semester, but he is also often lenient on due dates.

Houk has been a great professor. He definitely wants all of his students to succeed and encourages them to create something for the future. As long as you put in the work, he will appreciate the effort.

He was super helpful after my dad had a heart attack and completely understanding of my situation! I have taken him twice and wish I could take him again. He is chill and laid back. Does not give out too much homework, but when he does, it is sometimes time-consuming, so be prepared!

There is a lot of movies to watch, but it is not an overbearing amount. If you take the online course, be prepared to have discussions on the films you watched. Overall this class was fun, it was cool learning about different aspects of popular and influential films.

Great person to learn from. He is caring and will work with you if you're having a hard time academically.

Loved this class. Just watched movies and lectures. One quiz in each module that was on the lecture and the movies assigned. The final was verbal, but it was super easy as long as you actually watched the movies.
