hard to follow not organized in lecture
Tons of material. Hard to follow to take notes. However he is understanding as long as he can tell you have studied and do your share.
Great lecturer, and cool to boot!
Take this guy...great sense of humor, clear, organized classes. Made boring material interesting!
The guy is nuts. He's an easy grader but unless you take notes on every word out of his mouth and memorize ALL OF IT you will not be able to take his tests. He can talk the ENTIRE time he's got you in class for. Thinks everyone has a masters in History.
Definitely keeps you awake in class. Good lecturer. Maybe a little hard for a GER, but easy grader.
Interesting guy. Too much survey type stuff, but really good lectures, and fair exams.
Great so far...packs a lot in, but always really clear.
definitely one of my favorite history profs. But he won't let you coast a whole lot.
Interesting lectures. Rediculous expectations...can't possibly memorize everything he wants you to. And I have a 3.65 GPA, I'm a serious student.
i was scared about the midterm, but it came right off the review sheet. no surprises. great lecturer - clear and humourous.
Boring, obnoxious.
Good Lord! This dude wants you to know everything he says and if you forget one thing he gets mad and will think u aren't paying attention. I had a better history class then this one. This guys lectures are unorganized and he is boring!
This guy is tough, his lectures are disorganized and he jumps from topic to topic. He expects you to know every word that comes out of his mouth. He gives reviews for the test but its just a re print of the syllabus with no hints of what the test will be.
Look interested and keep on his good side. Pretty fair tests.
Incredibly obnoxious and pretentious. Tries to run class 10 minutes later than it is supposed to go. Easily irritated, scolds students if they cannot come up with an answer identical to his. Exams are ridiculous.
Great lecturer. Hard but you learn a lot.
guy is enthusiastic and easy to sit thru. but how bout a few films!
High expectations for a GER, but OK workload.
I have him now for world history and he is awesome. He makes class really interesting. I was never interested in history until now. He's a great professor
I really like him. Easy to sit through, the tests are easy, not other classwork besides reading, easy class, i would take him again. He usually lets us out right on time or a few min. early for most classes. Take him
sooooo boring!!!!!! keeps you to the last min and get fustrated easily. only has two test with two questions on them so either you pass or fail.
While I agree that answering questiosn is difficult (he requires exact answers) the class is a good ratio of easy listening and moderate tests. No problems
Challenging class!

this class is hard his testing is hard but hes a great speaker and keeps you interested through his lectures.
Hard class. Expects you to know a lot before taking the class and every answer you give him seems to be wrong. Lectures are sometimes unclear and he rarely writes down anything on the board. I wouldn't take him again.
The guy definitely knows what he's talking about, and he's a great speaker. Definitely one of the best profs I've had here, and this is my THIRD class with him.
I did not like his class at all and I was looking forward to it. Tests were difficult. I actually fell asleep once or twice during lectures.
Lectures were all over the place, exams were very difficult, expected A LOT for a GER. This classes added a whole new meaning to the word stressful for me. Steer clear.
the prof and class are great. probably my favorite prof at bridgewater so far. lectures are interesting and not just filled with dates to memorize. exams are reasonable if you pay attention to the review sheet.
good guy helpful test our tough but a reasonably easy grader take the class if you need it wouldnt recommend it if you dont need the ger
Unless you want to have a stroke trying to study, you don't want to take this class. The exams give you such anxiety.
L. is just the best. I hope you folks down at Bridgewater get it. I took two courses with him at Harvard Extension, and they were both awesome. I was already interested in history before I took his classes, but now I'm thinking of going on to do Islamic stuff in grad school. A model lecturer.
More of a Religion Class. Very Difficult to understand, tons of reading for exams. Must know exactly what he wants or else. Detailed Essay exams. Don't be late to class either he hates that. Constant attendance taker. Dont buy the large History book, only buy the smaller one, you Never use the big one and it costs too much.
Keeps the class interesting, and really knows his history. If you are into history then take the class; watch your absents he counts every one! As long as you know what your doing you will do well
i'm from BU, i took it in the summer. i enjoyed class alot, there's a lot of material but it's totally doable. just study for the tests, you'll do fine. the more you know about certain topics the better, and you go over everything you need to know in class. MUCH stronger emphasis on the smaller book; bigger one is *strictly* supplementary.
Smart, funny, A LOT of material but as long as you keep on top of the reading you won't get bogged down. attention to detail is very important to him and be prepared to compare and contrast EVERYTHING. loved his class though, kept it interesting.
awesome teacher...very organized and clear which made studying for the exam easy... Would recommend him to any one...
Knows his subject....def counts every absense....Really liked his style of teaching ..he gets very into his material and obvi that he loves what he teaches...i love history so maybe thats why i loved the class
i hate history and never do well andilove this class!!hes so excited about it and makes it interesting. hes awesome!
i dont know what everyone was thinking, but this guy is an a$$! you take notes based on his lectures, he only writes about 10 words on the board, but everything he says you never know what to write. BAD CLASS FOR A GER! also dont sit in the back, try to answer a question, he shoots you down. also dont bring a laptop, tests are redicculus, mad hard
not a bad class at all. at first it seems a bit intimidating, but as the class goes on and you understand his way of teaching the class gets better. he doesn't give a ton of notes, but if you read the assignments before class it's easier to follow along. tests are a lot of work--but not too tough. follow the outline and you'll be in good shape.
Some of the most insightful and interesting lectures I have ever had here at BSC. What you get from the class will be how much you get from the source book and his lectures which could very well be a great deal of information. Three tests, all essay, studying the source book and his lectures about them is all that is necessary.
awesome teacher. loves the stuff. taken him twice, and would do it again if i could. intense lectures.
really nice, very accomidating, totally interested in history and knows how to lecture. His tests are kind of hard, because they're all essays, but if you know your stuff it's not hard. again, nice guy, and he's cute in that "i'm a huge geek" sort of way.
He's a good professor but a little scattered. But very intense lectures and pretty easy. I would take him again in a heart beat
really tough. never repeats anything he says, making it hard to take notes. i didn't like history going into it but i never thought i'd be so lost in the class
This class is not difficult, but the the professor is insufferable. I hate having to go to class, despite wanting to learn the material, simply on the basis that he is condescending if you try to contradict his view. He seems to think that teaching HIS VIEW on topics in history is how to teach an unbiased course like a proper historian should.
Yes, very scattered and very fast talker. Hard to take notes, but... He presents the material well because he seems to really enjoy what he's talking about. His tests are hard only because they cover a HUGE amount of material. No paper. Gives a study guide for tests. All in all not horrible.
This class is thee worst class i have ever taken, he talks fast and in monotone, he asks for our opinions then he says that wasnt what he was looking for, he cuts people off all the time, yes he gives study guides but for a lot of material and about 80% of the stuff on the study guide is not on the test. I am a history major i enjoy history but thi
This guy is simply one of the best lecturers Ive had at BSC. Very interesting stuff especially for a GER. And I'm glad he doesnt test on the whole stdy guide. YOu definitely have a chance to learn something in his classes.
My second class with Dr. L. I love listening to him talk, because he's so interested in the stuff he's talking about. REally cares if we get it. What's this stuff about study guides in 131? When I took the class the tests came right off the guides, and he even gave us on the test the actual source document we had to analyze. No complaints.
Don't take it if you just want an easy GER. Covers alot, but he's an easy grader and def interesting to listen to. Smart and enthusiastic. Do the reading before class in the small book, and you'll do fine.
decent guy, takes attendance every day, lectures every day. tests probably essay and id. kind of a hard class and kinda boring but its not too bad
this was the hardest class that I have encountered yet. I love history, am a history major and he mademe hate it. He didn't go over things in enough detail, just enough to confuse you. I read for every class and nothing ever made sense and class didn't help. I was so glad to hand in my fianl and be done with this class.
I'm a history major and I loved the class. Definitely challenging, esp for a GER, but the lectures are actually pretty interesting. Prof is good at explaining difficult stuff.
Knows everything about islam (and a bunch of other religions too) and loves it. Assignments are hard but you can learn a lot (esp in the fatwa one). Easy to listen to.
BY FAR THE WORST class/PROF EVER hands down the most boring teacher! all he does is talk about jerusalem...everything relates back to jerusalem. His essays are brutal and he's a RIDICULOUS grader. i hated this man with a passion. Never was available for help. got mad if u asked a question, he thinks just cuz he knows it all that we should too.
Condescending and arrogant! I've never seen a teacher respond to students like he does. Very demanding for a GER too. Could have been a great class (content wise) if he didn't have such a bad attitude.
he knows his stuff about history, but for a GER, it's so effin hard, sux at teaching the material, lectures everyyyyy class, tests are hard as shizznitz!
This professor is challenging but REALLY knows his stuff! I am not a history major but got alot out of his class. Tests are hard but did well with alot of studying. He states up front that he wants the students to think and interpret historical material, so if you don't want to think don't take his class.
He's smart. He's boring and his voice reminds me of the scientist from the simpsons. He's OK overall.
Chooses favorites, make sure you are one of them!
He's smart but conceited. I love History otherwise I would not have made it. Talks over his nose at people. Uses religion as basis of lecture, and seems mock certain religions.Overall, not a bad guy. If you like History, you'll like the class.
Only take if you seriously like History!
Used religion as basis of this class, interesting but not what was described in the catalog. Stated this was "not his area of expertise" several times and didn't seem comfortable with subject matter. Condensding doesn't begin to describe him. Note taking is impossible, he's all over the place. Maybe better at a higher level class in his area.
hes a nice guy, straight forward, tests are all essay, study ahrd and youll do well, talk to him, he loves brownosers and chooses favorites, def be a favorite and you will do fine, make sure he knows your name without a nametag :)
The class wasn't terribly hard, lectures everyday and then a few big tests which were graded fairly but included a lot of content. Overall not too bad, lewinstein doesnt seem like a bad guy.
he is a decent teacher. Be prepared for a tough GER. Tests are all essay, so If you study your fine. Alittle lenient on grading. lotta notes too.
I thought the class was ok. I thought the class was designed for someone who loves history and good at it. A lot of notes, but keep up because he gets mad when you ask him to repeat.
B-O-R-I-N-G. He lectures everyday for the whole 55 minutes and reads from the textbook. The tests are ridiculous...They seem easy enough, but really they're rather difficult. Especially the essays. I would only take this class if you're a history nut. Don't bother if you're not willing to study or pay attention.
I enjoyed his modern middle east class. Kieth really knows his stuff when it comes to the middle east, islam, zionism etc. I think he mentioned that he lived in egypt for a time so he has first hand knowledge. The best thing to do is not complain about classes being boring. Get into the class and the subject, have a little passion.
This guy will try to convert you to judaism. i took over 40 pages of notes and managed an a/a- on the 3 difficult tests. he thinks hes the man and when he asks a question in class don't bother answering because if you don't use the exact words he is thinking, you are wrong
He's the man, super smart. Great teacher...you'll learn alot.
all he does is lecture to the class and doesnt get the class involved. there are only 3 tests for the course and thats all thats graded. they dont have much on it but you have so much to study for and they are difficult. he thinks hes the man and loves to listen to himself talk. do not take him if this is just for a GER.
If u have no interest in history and its just for a GER do NOT take him. hes obviously very passionate about his subject, has his biases, enjoys talking about Islam and Judaism a lot, seems to have a qualm with Christianity, and is very particular about who he likes/doesnt like. if you are a history buff and can be articulate about it u'll be fine
It should be a crime to be that boring! The tests are atrocious and he just lectures! DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS HISTORY IS YOUR LIFE.
class is very boring. he started out the semester taking attendance, but then didn't after a few weeks. if you don't go to class the tests will be VERY hard, since they are hard if you attend class. tests are near impossible. only 2 midterms and a final for your grades
All lecture but IMO wasn't as boring as everyone else has said on here. Offers extra credit-do it. Go into details on exams and you'll do fine. You'll actually have to study for this class but he's clear about what he wants. No surprises.
Great course. Very knowledgeable. Learned loads in this course. There is a lot of assigned reading. Tests are not exceedingly difficult.
horrrrrrrrible class! soo boring, you dont need to go to class ever if you dont want yo. there is only 2 midterms and one final and thats it! he is soo boring all he does it talk the entire time! dont take him
AWESOME TEACHER! He's a great lecturer, he is really cool, easy tests and quizzes, i missed a lot of class but you need to go to class, even tho i was absent i still got a B-,i liked him so much that i took another of his classes this sem. very organized, very easy to do well, accessible.
One of the worst profs that I have ever had. DO NOT
Very tough class. Lecture style teaching. He jumped around to different geological areas at comparative times, tough to keep track of what was happening where and when. His tests are essay and ID and he wants you to compare and contrast specifics. Class is a GRE of World Hisy but focussed TOTALLY on religion. Felt like a theology class, not history
...get out during the add or drop period
This guy is a complete ass. He is so disconnected from his students. He loves the sound of his own voice.
This guy is a complete jerk. He is so disconnected from his students. He loves the sound of his own voice.
he's such a jerk. he thinks he is perfect and right all the time. i would highly recommend you avoid taking him at all costs.
worst teacher ever BY FAR! thinks he knows everything. tries to brag about his knowledge rather than help. goes way off topic. focuses on religion rather than the actual history of the time period. notes based on opinion rather than fact. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS!!! ull thank me
Not a good teacher, does not care about students. very rude when an "incorrect" opinion is voiced. 3 exams with essay and identifications. lecturing is extremely boring, personal notes are the only way to effectively study
His lectures can be dull, and he is usually disconnected from the students. He discourages you greatly from participating because giving the wrong answer results in him telling you you are absolutely, positively wrong. I was extremely intimidated by him..I'm reluctant to take him again.
This class was very interesting and Professor Lewinstein really knows his subject well. At first he seems intimidating because he is so smart - but stick with it - you won't be sorry. You will learn a LOT and the material (Islam/Middle East) is very relevant to today. I highly recommend this class to SERIOUS history majors.
He is very insightful and helpful good grader. A hint in getting a good grade in his class is, just mention the Dome of the rock on all the exams. This will ultimately give you an easy A+
He is very into what he teaches which makes his lecture in depth and interesting. His classes can be confusing and it is hard to take notes unless you write every word he says. He can be arrogant if give him the wrong answer during class and definitely will not scale any test. His test are hard but manageable if you like history i would take him
Lectures, can be tough to follow sometimes, if you go to class you'll get a B.
Wow, people are being generous on here. He's one of the hardest teachers I've had. Have to fill in the gaps with your book, prepare to use the exact conclusions he himself has come to in class or do awful on tests. No in depth thinking... he wants you to repeat what he said or youre wrong. Always let us go early though.
Lectures are ridiculous!!! This class is so boring. He knows his stuff, but can not teach it!!! Try taking another teacher! This class was awful.
Im glad I waited till the end of class to rate this prof. What people say here is true, not great at teaching, goes fast and goes off topic often. Taking notes is almost impossible cause of that. Dont raise your hand to answer unless you can read his mind. Recommended? Not unless ur a HIS MAJ cause he does know his stuff.. just a fast course.
Professor is really into this subject matter. Although it is tough to take notes because he writes down very little, he expects students to write all essay test off class notes. Focus on Human Record Book, the other one is a waste of time. I liked the class. Professor rambles a bit but he is nice.
This Professor is awful! If you are taking this class for a requirement do not take him because he takes the material so seriously. He thinks that everything he says is right and he is kind of just ignorant. His test are very difficult and during class he talks so fast you cant even take notes.
He's teaching theology not history. Terrible class.
He is a nice guy don't get me wrong but he is one of those professors that knows the material and knows it. He gives a midterm, a final and extra credit. I took a night class that met once a week: never again with him. I walked out of his class taking five pages of notes a night. try to avoid him at all costs.
Keith is not helpful whatsoever. When you can't answer his question he looks at you like you're stupid. He's an ignorant person and likes to be "right". Don't take him, SAVE YOURSELVES!!!
Very interesting class, but very demanding. If you don't stay on top of all the readng or take careful notes during class you will fail. 2 exams and 1 paper make up your final grade and all three are difficult. Only take him if you're really interested in Islam and the Middle East because he really knows his stuff.
Do not take him. He is the worst and is an awful teacher.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! honestly, he is the worst professor, he babbles on about nothing for hours and doesnt make any sense. his class was the worst class i have ever taken. on top of that, his tests are horrible and you have to know so much information and he doesnt give you any leeway for responses. im an A/B student. HES AWFUL!
He is full of himself and acts like he's superior to his students sometimes. He laughs condescendingly if you ask a question that he deems dumb, though he always asks for Q's/comments. He requires a lot of reading, and if you don't do it, you can't expect more than a B. He is a fair grader on essays, but way too hard on tests. Avoid if possible.
Awful teacher, Class does not follow a clear path as history should. Rambles an insane amount. No homework, whole grade depends on midterm and final. Terrible if you ask for extra help, he just tells you how stupid you are. Do not take him.
Prof. Lewinstein is one of thos professors who knows the material and is smug about it. He is a high demanding teacher and tends to talk down to his students. there was one midterm and a final. the "extra credit" was manditory if you wanted an A.If you are backed into a corner and taking him like I was, good luck. Avoid if you can.
History major. Got A. In class. Subject is very interesting but the professor is on an ego trip. Very condescending. Too bad. The subject matter is very interesting but he seems to enjoy belittling students.
Worst teacher I have ever had.
He is just an awful professor. So full of himself and not helpful at all. Avoid at all cost.
Lectures are barely tolerable and difficult to keep up with as he jumps from subject to subject, very high standards he makes it so you can not obtain an "A" unless you do extra credit what's extra about that it's regular credit then
Obviously very intelligent, but jumps from different time periods and subjects so taking notes is very difficult. Very boring class and he's a very intimidating guy. Avoid if possible, this class was pretty awful.
Dr. Lewinstein can jump from topic to topic and make note taking a hassle and he can be egotistical, but is by far one of the most intelligent professors at this school. He gets a bad wrap bc he is hard, but if you do the readings and try to piece together the material, you can learn a TON. Tests and essays are tough, lots of reading, fair grader.
Do not take his class!!!!! I have always had straight A's and high B's in all my classes and I am struggling sooo hard to pass his class. Not only is he a hard grader, but the way he runs his class makes the material 100x harder. AVIOD HIM!
To be honest, if you are taking an upper-level class he might be great, but I did not. I feel like he spoke to us and ran the class like it was upper-level and I did not like that. You really have to study for the reading quizzes, like a lot.
One of the meanest, most disrespectful jerks I have ever encountered. He talks down to students, degrades them, cares very little for their wellbeing, their level of engagement, and if they learn from him. Uninspiring, rude, arrogant, and a disgrace to the history department. AVOID!
I have had him for a few classes now and I can honestly say that its not a bad class but there aren't many things that he grades. One map quiz that you had to pass or you wouldn't pass the class and he would make it progressively harder and harder if you didn't pass it. The books are cheap but we never used them.
He is a really good professor who is passionate about the subject. People who complain about him being boring aren't interested in the material, because if you are he isn't boring. You do have to work for the grade, but you will learn a lot in the process. If you think he's a bad or unfair professor, it's probably because you're a bad student.
Class has lots of lectures, but they are engaging. Professor Lewinstein is not a hard grader; assignments have clear guidelines and if you follow them and submit work on time, you will be fine. He is very responsive to emails and no question went unanswered. Overall a great class and professor, not too much homework.
Listen it's not that he's a terrible prof, but he's just not good. The book does not remotely correlate with what we learn in class, and his lectures are confusing on a good day. He gives pretty much nothing to work with study-wise considering the book is useless and he doesn't post power points and exams are confusing. tough grader and no feedback
I'm sorry, but this man is the department head? Ridiculous. Lewinstein isn't awful, but he's extremely vague with quiz/exam expectations. He doesn't seem to care whether you do well in his class either. This can be remedied through copious note-taking, but it's difficult to discern important vs. background topics. It's manageable but challenging.
Both a horrible department head and an even worse professor. Rude and awful at communication, so don't count on a reply email from him. Lectures are confusing and it's nearly impossible to discern what's important and what's not. Extremely difficult grader with unclear grading criteria. There are much better professors in the history department.
To his benefit, he is very passionate about his subjects. However, he is incredibly pompous. I would feel much more inclined to enjoy his class if it wasn't for this fact. I come to school to learn, not be talked down to.
He asks the class questions and then multiple people answer he doesn't accept any of the answers then gets upset that no one wants to raise their hands he uses the syllabus to avoid having to do his job I asked for help understanding an assignment he said read the syllabus I read it multiple times why would I reach out if I hadn't already read it??
Not a great professor in general very unclear about many things and is always late to class
I wouldn't take this course again. No respect for students, didn't even care to remember our names. When you get a question write he tries to tell you that yo u got it wrong & he explains it in different words than you but its the same thing you just said.
im telling u now...just don't take him please for ur sake. like especially if his class is right in the morning his voice is just horrible to listen to hen. he says "um" about 100 times each class & I wanna rip out my hair from it. ur answers are never right he always says no (even tho u are right). just don't take it pick another history.
Professor KL is an extremely smart man. His lectures are packed with content & knows his subjects. There is a decent amount of writing, as it is a history course. Not that bad of a class tbh. Be prepared for NO ELECTRONICS during class. And you need to show up to pass the class. Just make sure you look at syllabus for assignments and you will b ok.
Prof Lewinstein is actually horrible. I took his class as a requirement for my major and expected to really enjoy the course, however, Lewinstein made history (my chosen major) so boring it was unbearable. No to mention he's incredibly rude and arrogant, thinks he's better than his students and would rather have no contact with them.
His lectures are really hard to follow and you have to be prepared to read and write A LOT. Attendance is MANDATORY and he will fail you solely on your attendance, doctors/therapist notes or not--he wont care.
What a pompous man. I was excited for this course, but KL made it unbearable. He is a fair grader, but the way he speaks to students is very disrespectful. His ego gets in the way of students being able to build a good relationship with him. He will look and speak to you like you are nothing but an inconvenience. Lectures are disorganized, ear-sore
Professor KL's lectures are packed with content, but his pompous attitude can make the class frustrating. Still, engaging with the material and using study resources like unstuck AI can help you succeed.
Professor Lewinstein has very lecture-heavy classes. Each class had a lecture and discussion, he also showed related videos. As long as you show you are actively engaging with the subject and the materials he assigns you'll be fine. He can come off as a bit distant, but I found him easy to talk to after class. Don't skip class or show up late!
He was almost unreachable outside of class and never answered emails. He would not say when things were due so if you missed an online quiz you were unable to make it up. He seems to do a great job teaching higher classes, but cannot lecture effectively for HIST131
I was excited to take this class and I value the information I learned from the lectures and readings. The professor is very hard to give comments to in class discussions. Assignments aren't too difficult, nor are the readings, very unapproachable and supercilious
This guy was all over the place. Almost made me drop my history Major. If you are late don't even bother , even though he was almost late everyday
The teacher is very heavy on lectures but does not provide very good presentation notes or slideshows. Very textbook/reading heavy. If you do not pass the final you will fail the class even if you did great on all of your other work.
doesn't allow u to hand in anything after it is due, doesn't matter if ur 2 minutes late or 2 days he will give you a 0. Tests/quizzes are very hard the information to study is hard to find because there is too much to go through and the questions are specific. do the extra credit assignment it's helpful if u struggled with the quizzes like I did.
He is smart but also incredibly pompous, arrogant, etc. He lectures for the entire class but does not have very good slide shows or notes to go with it. You are graded by relatively few assignments as well. He has not responded to a single one of my emails the entire semester. He is condescending when you ask questions, too. Avoid if possible
He is extremely boring and makes the lesson completely unbearable. He is very smart it is to his disadvantage because he just talks about things that are irrelevant to the lesson. Every assignment he gives you are required to relate it to class and it is sometimes impossible to relate things to class because the class makes absolutely no sense.
If you don't like reading or are not actually interested in ancient history, do not take this course. I found it fine because I like history, but there is so much reading. The exams were easy, but they are long (hand-written only) and take a lot of preparation. You get your notes on the exams, and he is a nice guy, tho.
Absolutely phenomenal capstone. Lewinstein made me want to show up and learn, I felt genuinely robbed of learning for any course I missed. Very fair grader, the one essay is literally only 10% of the grade and is open note. Do the work, show up, participate. History majors, take a keith course before you graduate, i promise you wont regret it.
Call me bitter. A class of 20 students is taught like there are 150. Only knows your name if you have a name tag on your desk every day. Entire class is lecture, no supplements. Two midterms. Class can be cancelled and he'll still take attendance from an online lecture you have to watch. The class isn't difficult, but KL made me dread it every day.
Professor Lewinstein wasn't the worst professor, but his class was challenging. His lectures were very boring and often dragged on. The course had two midterms and one final exam, all graded very strictly. Grades were based only on quizzes and exams, with exams worth 200–300 points, making the class far from easy.
