Good Prof., always willing to help a student. Easy to understand and works with you so you understand. Realizes cutting up a cat is not fun and tries to make is as easy as possible.
Goes way to fast thru material and isnt very clear on anything!!!
lectures are rushed. tests are very hard with essays included. not recomended!!!!
great teacher!
i love this teacher! he does all these little things to help us remember the material, the tests arent bad and there is no homework. the class is hard to begin with but he really tries to help you. i would definately recommend him and i just wish he would teach BI152!!
Teacher relies on power point too much! Doesn't really teach, would not advise anyone to take his classes. Nice guy, but not such a great teacher!
Never in life would I have imagined that I would hate Biology. He rushes through all material and he says that he has no time to help you after class b/c he teaches other things. I don't like him as a teacher and to save people considering his class I'd say please do not take him because you will regret it.
Great teacher you will do fine if you pay attention read the book and take notes. He is a really likeable guy and makes biology interesting, I dont understand everyone elses dislike of him. I have learned a lot with him.
You cannot be a lazy student and expect to pass with flying colors! Prof. does a great job keeping the material interesting and it's up to you to study it. Do not take this class with a full schedule.
Hand-written notes. Not like other classes where you memorize it all and may forget later. A lot to cover ~so stay focused. Dont miss class! There are essays, fill in blanks on every test some r for extra credit. If you read all the material you should be fine. The best class for students who have time and a goal to really understand microbiology.
Great teacher, one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. I don't why people hate him, maybe because they actually have to do work in Community College maybe?? If you try hard you will do fine. His tests are very detail oriented so you really need to study hard. However, he is a great guy and has a real passion for teaching biology.
Mr. Scully really knows the subject matter which is very impressive. He is very willing to help students outside of class. He asks the students to study an unreasonable amount of material for each exam.He refuses to narrow it down even a little bit.He gives no syllabus and gives one to two weeks notice for exams.Frustrating in many ways.Don't take.
Amazing teacher.
Hard teacher. Be Prepared to work with him. Great teacher but this class almost killed me
Good teacher, really knows biology and has a passion for it. I would recommend him he makes class interesting and is very willing to work with students. Exams can be difficult but a night of studying was all I needed to get an A for each exam
SCULLY IS THE MAN! he is one of the best teachers ever! he makes sure you understand the material. Great teacher.
He is very engaging. However, he was very unorganized. The online test was very unfair because most of the material is never even touched in class and the website is non-functional.I worked very hard and attended every single lecture but still made a B.He is a good teacher but his family issues should not be spared at the cost of a student's grade.
had him for bi110, bi112, and bi230. great teacher, very helpful. talk about Mrs. Scully and kids in class, very funny. makes good examples and cares about your grade. there to help with anything, even if it's not class related.
One of the most interesting and fairest teachers i have had. Test can de challenging but scully teaches very very well and if you have a question he will have no problem answering it. He for sure loves micro. and does a good job at making sure you understand it
he is a great person and can be helpful but his exams are really hard. some of the material on the exams was hardly talked about in class. it is very easy to fall behind in this class. even if he knows what you are talking about and you are correct, he will mark you wrong unless you put it exactly how he wants it.
awesome!
His exams are really tough, and extremely detailed, while encompassing a very large amount of material. He's not very good about responding to email. I previously earned A's in both Anatomy courses, studied really hard in this class, and scraped by with a C. He's a good guy, but do not take Scully for Microbiology, take Degnan instead.
EVERYTHING on the exams is talked about in class. The last 2 exams had homework packets and if you did the homework, the answers to the tests were right from the homework. Sometimes can be slow to respond to questions via email, but a very good teacher.
Rushes through some lectures so he can say he taught everything. He talks about advanced placement classes a lot so I think he may design his classes for these particular students. Students hold him in high regard for his knowledge.
He went through all material that was on test. I found his test challenging but very predictable, he tells you whats on the test. I highly recommend taping his lectures, it's an easy A if you do, I took this along with A&P 2 and 2 other courses.
Great professor and knows his stuff. Tests can be pretty tricky but he grades fairly.
Horrible! relied way too much on powerpoints and hardly taught. To pass the class you have to memorize the powerpoints, there is no learning.
Good professor. He does use power power points well. Uses illustrations to help clarify things. He tells you exactly what you need to know. I learned alot in his class and recommend to everyone. Don't be fooled though This is still college it's not going to be easy. I had him for BI 110 and 112. And i'll have him again for BI230
DO NOT TAKE MICRO WITH HIM!! Nice guy and all.. But his tests are close to impossible. Im an A student, dedicate 99% of my time to studying, and just passed with a C. My class started with 30+ and ended with 8. If you want to get a B or C in this class you need to study 4-5 hours a day. If you can't handle anything below a A, find a different prof.
Scully is awesome. His course prepared me so well for at least 4 other courses. His exams are thorough but he tells you exactly how to get an A, and I spent my Sundays following his directions and guess what, I got an A.
Great teacher. Had him for BIO 1 and 2. Did well in both his classes. he uses powerpoints so you always know whats in his tests and the info matches whats in the book. His tests can be tough but what do you expect? It is college. luckily he gives a nice curve to the tests as well.
the truth.hes very nice.help you with anything. but reads off the powerpoint alot.if have a job or a full time student good luck, will be inpossible to get any higher than in the c.i would not recommend him .its to many powerpoints to study and the test are hard. i would study 4 days straight and i still couldnt get higher than a border line b.
Professor Scully does use powerpoints but it will only help you. If you study the power pioints show up tp class and study by reading you text, notes, flash cards etc. you will do great. Your in control of your grade not the professor.
Although he's a really nice guy, he's not a good teacher. He reads off of his slides and goes off on tangents. He completes a chapter a day and goes through the material way too fast. The tests a near impossible to get an A on. Don't take this teacher if you need to pass Micro for your program !
He really knows his stuff! He's extremely nice and very patient, I very much looked forward to his class. I'd highly recommended him, you'll get a lot out of his class. YES, the tests are difficult, but just read the book, study the packets, and pay attention in class and you'll be fine! Also, do the mastering, this helped me tremendously!
Although he is a great guy, his lecture is nearly impossible to follow. I am a 4.0 student and this class almost killd me, and cost me getting into my program. If you need an A, i suggest a different professor or take it alone so you are not trying to balance other classes with it. I got an A in the lab with BASU,maybe try her!
Absolutely goes way too fast for even the most prepared student to absorb material. Will often cover complex subject matter within one lecture and after 3-4 lectures you have a test. Speaking of those, they are pretty tricky and graded quite harshly. I studied endlessly, often having to ignore some other classes and still only managed a C. Avoid!
This proff goes way too fast and his tests are nearly impossible! His formatting is difficult and you cant study off the test because he collects them back which is bad because nearly all the material builds from the previous test. If you need a decent grade do not take him
this guy has ZERO interest in helping his students succeed. His lectures are impossible to follow and then he sabotages you on the tests. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
His lecture is TOO fast and unclear! He use powerpoint ONLY and no handouts, he wants you to know everything from the textbook. His tests are extremely hard with multiple choice, writing, drawing and everything within only 45 minutes! So impossible! Avoid him if you wanna protect your GPA! I'm an A student with a B in his class, drags my GPA down!!
Basically a positive experience. It's freshman bio, so it's not going to be too profound. Takes things a bit too seriously at times, but is a remarkably nice guy. Doing the homework is helpful, as a lot of test questions are directly from it. The material is almost all physiology/medical stuff-the ecology parts are just covered quickly at the end.
ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. I am a straight A student but have difficulty in the biology part. I would attend office hours and he would hardly help at all. He also told me various times that maybe I am not ready for college at all and tried to persuade me to drop out. His classes are vague and too much powerpoint is used I would STRONGLY take another teacher
His tests are fierce. Prepare yourself, and prepare to not do well. I failed my first before I understood his method. Remarkably nice guy, very clear in his teaching, always willing to help no matter what.... DO THE MASTERING! Seriously, it will save your life - AND READ THE BOOK! It'll be the hardest A you've ever earned. But worth it!!
1)Do the MASTERING MICROBIOLOGY assignments. 2)Pay attention to what's going to be on the written sections of the exams (HE TELLS YOU). 3)Start studying at least 4 days before the exam. 4)Congrats on your well earned A.
Excellent teacher, actually cares about biology. Is very fair, will give you the grade you deserve. That being said, read the chapters, do the mastering hw, and participate in class discussion.
He's the worst teacher I have ever taken. His tests are really hard even if you study you will still get a B on the test. Lectures are very boring and powerpoints everything. Do not take this class, just stay away.
Lectures are mandatory it's pointless to show up instead teach yourself its more helpful. He makes you do mastering and says it will bring you up a whole letter grade, well hes a liar. Spend hours doing it and he gives you 5 points total. He walks like a t-rex. Always goes off on tangents. Don't bother asking questions he'll laugh at you.
The Worst class i have ever taken. His 5 Test are HORRIBLE! especially with the fill in the blank and essay questions. They have to be to his exact liking. A TON of mastering homework worth little credit. He missed 3 classes this semester and had a wonder sub Mrs Degnan. I would suggest taking her. HE IS IMPOSSIBLE SAVE YOURSELF!
You have to put in the work, its not easy however I really enjoyed this class. I have never studied more for any other class and I received an A. You just have to work for it. I learned a lot in his class that I will be able to retain because I was forced to learn instead of memorize. I recommend his class for people willing to put the work in.
This professor has no interest in helping his students succeed in this class. He uses only power point and his tests are ridiculously hard. Especially the fill-in-the-blank and the short answer questions. He is a tough grader and gives out a lot of mastering homework with little to no credit. I would not recommend anyone to take his class. AVOID!
AWFUL PROFESSOR for micro. I am a A student, took his class with 4 others. I am almost finished with this semester and I have 4 As and a D in his class. His tests are RIDICULOUSLY hard. I now have to repeat with Roe at South. He is awful. His fill in the blank and short answer qs are very hard. NO NO NO. SAVE YOUR GPA.
Prof. Scully is a great bio teacher. His tests are tough but if you do MasteringBio and read the chapters, you will do well. He is willing to explain the material if you missed anything during the test. He also gives a heads up on what will be on his tests. His lectures are fast paced but great. His class prepared me very well for A&P 2.
Scully is one of my favorite professors. He encourages participation and attendance is strongly enforced, but i missed a few classes and skipped a few HWs and still got an A because i knew my stuff. he is a very fair grader and just a fungi (fun guy ha ha micro joke)
Clear grading, very caring and intelligent. Always finds a way to relate the material to the real world. Knows how to teach, has clear english and honestly the best professor I've ever had.
He's an Ok professor. He expect a lot from you and he also expect from you that you know all the information that you took in bio 1 .. 5 tests multi, and short answers questions ... if you study a lot then you will get a good grade for sure ... he's a nice guy
Awesome and fair
Scully is very devoted to biology and knows a ton about it. Expects you to be a microbiologist in 1 semester. Tests are VERY difficult, long and timed so you need to rush through the test. Lectures are boring power points and are rushed because there is so much material. Made us come in on a holiday to take a test! Loved LAB but not lecture, AVOID!
Professor Scully gives you an outline for each chapter which he goes through step by step in class. He also hints at specific things that will for sure be on the exams. If you know and understand the outlines and do the Mastering homework it is not too hard to get an A in his class.
He is awful. Dont take his class if your first language isnt English. I speak and read well but the tests are SO long and timed! If I had more time to read them, I could get a better grade. I am a straight A student and I even gey As on all his homework but i dont do well on the tests. This is a CLEAR sign that he is unfair with tests.
If you do not memorize every single little detail he mentions in class, you will not do well on the exams. They are impossible. Get ready to devote ALL OF YOUR TIME on this class, and this class only. Exams consist of multiple choice, short answer, matching and essay questions. Prof. Scully is a good guy and knows his stuff, just expects a lot.
Funny & enjoyable in lecture! VERY knowledgeable in his field! He covers dense material quite quickly in his Bio II course. Also, end of semester was RUSHED to fit chapters. WARNING: Study A LOT for exams!!! 55 minute exam contains 40 multiple choice, 10+ fill-in-the-answer, and several essay/short answer questions. Be prepared, or you will tank.
Exams expect you to know basically every little detail from lecture. Way too many questions for the exams. Can go off on tangents at times. Other than that, he's a nice guy and really knows his material. Very helpful when you have questions
5 exams, all of which are 45 M/C with 3 pages of short answer questions (quite difficult.) Scully tends to compare students to his own children.
I took him for micro and I absolutely loved him! He is very clear. If you follow the class, pay attention, you will get an A for sure. College is hard, so it's wise not to think of better grades without studying. If you study, you will definitely make it. He is very much caring ! Gonna take him for rest of my bio courses which he offers !!
Professor Scully is one of the best. He really knows his stuff. The tests are only incredibly difficult if you don't study -- when I studied, I whizzed through them with 20 minutes to spare and got consistent 95s. There are five tests and regular online homework. Keep up and go to class (take decent notes, don't just go) and you'll do well.
Microbiology is a difficult class and Scully makes it ten times more complicated than it has to be. Hes late to every class then keeps you past the time your class should be over, is very unorganized, and is unclear and misleading about what he wants you to focus on for his incredibly difficult tests. Take this class with somebody else.
Microbiology is already a hard course and this professor makes it harder than what it needs to be. Professor Scully is very unclear about material that will be on exams. Exams are absolutely horrific multiple choice, short answer and essay questions .I was a straight A student ,but not anymore. I do not recommend taking his lecture course.
I honestly never hated a professor in my life!! I regret taking his class, and having him as my teacher. His test are hard!! Please watch out!!50 multiple choice, 15 fill in the response, and 5 short answer in 50 minutes. They need a new teacher for biology, because he is not it.
His exams were the most difficult Ive ever taken .He gives so much homework Nd expects you to finish them before the exam. So many short answer exams and essay and if you dont put in details youll lose points. Hes a tough grader as well.I would never recommend anyone taking this Professor .
Scully is a good professor. Hes very nice and wants you to do well, but that being said he expects this class to trump other classes. He assigns mastering with no warning, sometimes only hours before its due. During COVID, he has been giving tests that he tells us about 2 days before. Keep up with the reading or you wont pass.
Prof Scully is a very nice guy, however, do not expect him to be on time for anything ever. Exams graded late, material is made more complicated than need be. His grading criteria are unclear and not fair. He expects you to know everything and is VERY difficult to get in touch with outside of class. Of the 12 emails sent, I got 4 replies.
10/10 did not handle quarantine well teaching online, took out own frustration on students a bit. Some notes and homework's were posted a few days prior to the test, put final homework up 6 hours before its due date. Very under prepared and made excuses for posting things late, not understanding or compassionate towards students during this time.
NEVER take this professor. I'm not one to leave bad reviews, but for this I had to. Never available for help, doesn't explain things clearly, makes you feel stupid, thinks he knows it all. He is always at least 10 minutes late for class and never puts grades in till very last minute.
This teacher was the worst teacher I ever had. He is never on time, never grade papers on time. The whole semester you are wondering what your grade is and if you pass. Also, he blames you if your not ready for a test. I am a responsible student that studies and works hard for my grade; however, with this teach, you can never have the upper hand.
Professor Scully does not f around. He naturally receives hate on this page because he makes you work for a course that is supposed to be a challenge. This man earned the SUNY Chancellors award for a reason. He understands the course material thoroughly and cares about his students. If you have no choice but to take it with him, you can do this!
I think Professor Scully recieved more hate than he should've. I took this class while taking Calc181 and A+P1 and he did an amazing job while teaching. Yeah he went on tangents and was late alot, but he really cares about his students and knows his stuff. Those who did bad didn't put the proper amount of effort into this class and blame him.
He rushes through material exponentially. I like his teaching style though, it's a shame he rushes, if he slowed down he would actually be a pretty good teacher. I felt like I had to teach myself everything because of this. Exams are 90% of your grade and HW is only 10% so if you have a bad exam, HW isn't going to help balance your grade out.
Do NOT take him if u care about your grades. U have to study a lot , all day and night. Everything comes out of the textbook ! Time is short comparing the confusing tough question. Fill in the blanks , true false, short answers and atleast 50 MSQ. Grades u badly. Taking a test in different day - takes points off. Takes points off for overwritting.
Keith is a genius at your service. He puts so much information and concepts together in one place - I feel like I'm years ahead of other students by being in his class. He puts is "A game" on for each lecture - very funny and caring guy. He is the professor you want if you take college seriously and want a solid foundation
Professor Scully is a very nice person, but terribly unprofessional. He does not follow through with anything he says. He waits weeks to grade quizzes and lab practical. And had practical 2 and 3 on consecutive days. I'm going to be relieved when this semester is over.
He's smart, but he goes on so many tangents about his personal life that he was unable to cover all of the material. He constantly pushed back exam dates and he resents the students for asking questions during class. Always saying that we should be teaching the chapters to ourselves at home. Overall very unorganized and petty, avoid him if you can.
Lectures are very scattered, he uses terminology before teaching it saying, “you should already know this” and telling you to teach yourself. I found him condescending and unhelpful & speaks as if he is above others. If biology comes naturally to you, he may be doable, but if you rely on having a good professor, I would switch instructors.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS. HE MAKES THE MATERIAL HARDER THAN IT NEEDS TO BE.
Do yourself a favor and never take this class with this professor. He doesn't post any notes/study guides and expects you to learn the material by yourself. Not helpful and at all and gets mad when you ask him questions. He treats this class like it's the more important than any other class. Worst professor i have had out of anyone
Honestly the best professor I have ever had. I've never heard him act annoyed by questions. Yes, you have to read your textbook - that is part of taking a college science course. The college bookstore is there for a reason. Very funny and engaged professor - nice guy.
Great guy outside of his classes. In classes, he's miserable. Read read read, and then all he does is go over the textbook content. Bit of a waste for a tuition cost. He speaks w/a monotone voice & is passive aggressive for no reason, sometimes demeaning to students as well. Would not recommend.
