A little tedious, but not a very hard grader.
Boring but easy! Don't need to go to class to get an A.
Fun and entertaining. You can learn a lot. Just show up.
Professor Slocum's syllabus is reasonable, the workload is fair and the class discussions are insightful. Only 2-3 paper (5-8pp) due per semester with a midterm and final. Late papers are gladly accepted and grades are commisserate.
Very easygoing.Good sense of humor. Not very demanding.A few papers some of which he proofreads and lets you correct before handing in the final.Fair grader.Overall good guy.
A first rate professor and a credit to the University. You'll learn practical information you can apply and insight into language and sentence structure for use in a corporate environment.
Funny, smart, interesting. Love the guy.
Kinda boring, but fairly easy on the grading. Just pay attention in class and you'll do fine!
I liked this class well enough. Slocum can be really boring & he can also be really funny. His discussions were good. He isn't tough...fair grader. Not a bad prof. I'd recommend him.
Dr. Slocum is great and makes Shakespeare tolerable. Can be a little dull at times, but just look at the material he has to work with.
Pretty much the nicest, most down-to-earth teacher I've ever had at MSU!
He is a very chill professor. I'd take him again.
He is very personable and level headed. It is nice to have a professor that "suggests" things rather than trying to cram ideas into your mind. He is a fair grader and understands that you have a life outside of school so he doesn't overload the work.
Take him!
Smart, funny, and kinda cute! Also very fair and a real human being as well as an intelligent expert in the field. Worth it!
Dr. Slocum rocks!
Sweet as Pie...
Definately one the best professors I have had; top three at Montclair.
He is the nicest guy in the world, but he is just soooo BORING! and I didnt feel like I learned anything about from him.
Slocum is the coolest! He caught me with Cliffnotes and laughed. I threw the Cliffnotes out, really focused, and I wound up with an A. He's not the easiest guy to understand; but once you figure out what he wants, it's smooth sailing.
Slucum is the man. He picks awesome liturature to comment on. Is concerned about each student. Has fun discussion and makes a WRITING HEAVY tolerable. Hey we all gotta take this class we might as well have an awesome guy like him.
A waste of time. Nice guy, but not much energy.
don't waste your time. he clearly hates teaching and is so bored in class; you'll learn absolutely nothing there. nice guy but worthless class.
He's possibly the WORST teacher I've ever had. So boring and uninterested in teaching. It's time he retired.
I'm a fan. I admit it. Dr. Slocum is both a very knowledgeable professor, and also an incredible person. He's an asset to MSU, and an asset to humanity. Take a class. If you don't love him, there's something wrong with you.
Ok teacher. I'm just tired of Shakespeare :-/
Ok class...too much shakespeare...2papers...midterm and final...alot of readings...fair grader...if u like shakespeare...take it...not a bad class...just gets boring at times..
loved the class...he made it very interesting but yet was interested in our thought on the class. if your looking for a class where you actually learn something take this class. two papers, midterm and final
Boring, judgmental, and obnoxious. I don't care how easy his class is...take him only if you can't get into anything else.
I don't know what the last person is talking about since he is not judgemental in the least - he's a bit sarcastic admittedly, but I love that kind of humor so I thought he was very fun - you just need to realize he likes to joke around with people. The class was easy, even if a bit boring at times, and the professor is very helpful.
Nice guy. Very mellow and has knowledge on the readings. There were 2 papers which were not bad at all because he's a fair grader and a midterm and a final which are open book. Totally recommend
Had him for Shakespeare class. He completely enhanced the readings with his knowledge and expertise. He made the class interesting. Two papers, midterm and final. Very fair grader. He shed light on the talent of the writings. I do recommend him.
American Drama - Great readings! 2 short papers, midterm and final. Take the class. Interesting character analysis of the plays. IT was fun.
American Drama. Interesting. Sometimes he speaks in a monotone so class can become a little boring. Other than that he is a fair grader.
Shakespeare- Dr. Slo****is amazing! I thought it wood b boring but he is pretty funny and def kept it interestin. Bummer he only teaches 2 classes. I read the plays after the fact nd still was able 2 follow along cuz he really explained what was going on. I wood def recommend him 2 short papers (3-4 pgs) nd a midterm nd final. Cool class. Take it!
He is an older professor you are either going to LOVE to attend his class or HATE...He's a standup comedian BUT his jokes get VERY CORNY and lame VERY FAST. He loves attention and HUGE on DRY HUMOR. I found him irritating. 2 papers, midterm, final. EASY A :-)
Nice man! sometimes seems like he dosent want to be bothered maybe because I took him during the summer. Tends to favor certain students. overall ok guy
Prof. Slo****is not only knowledgeable, but hilarious! He's quick-witted, but also dry in humor. He's interested in making the subject of Shakespeare fun! Coursework is far from demanding, but read the texts -- his class is discussion-based. 2 papers, 2 exams.
I took him for American drama; he's very funny, the plays we read were very interesting, two papers, midterm, & a final. Make sure you know the plays very well & you'll be sure to get an A.
The plays he read were very interesting - good reads. Attendance is not mandatory. 2 exams, 2 papers each worth 25%. Classes are interesting as long as people participate.
3 comedies and 3 histories. 2 papers and 2 exams. Easy A if you read the stories.
Pretty easy and interesting as long as you do the readings and participate. 6 plays total, 3 comedies and 3 histories. VERY funny professor, though he's best when people are engaged and actually participating and talking. Not too hard of a grader, read the plays and you won't have any issues.
Everyone claims Dr. S is an easy professor, but he really isn't. He expects a lot and is very critical. He has a certain way of doing things and wants everyone to do it exactly his way. But he is a good professor. Very helpful. Very honest. Tries to joke around, but fails. But I love Keith. Take his class!
He is okay. I would probably not take another class with him. He is very difficult to deal with at time because he is so unclear. He is nice. He tries to joke around. He is not the easiest grader like everyone says. He is fair, though. People are mean to him for no reason. If he was clearer with what he wanted, my opinion of him would be different.
I took him for 2 classes. My Art of Fiction class was an easy A. ENWR220 was not clear, I had no idea what he wanted or even what was wrong with my assignments. I failed all the papers and he was incredibly boring. Nice guy, just not consistent.
I've taken 3 classes with him and I would never take him again. Writing in the major was pretty easy, but i took nothing out of it. He is not an easy grader like many have said. In fact, he's a pretty tough grader. He likes things done a certain way, and if not done that way you will most likely end up with a C. He's not helpful at all.
Art of drama. Read the stories before class. He just goes over the plot so it could be boring. He's so monotone too so I stay on my iPad most the class. Takes attendance. 2 papers, midterm, and final. He had a 10 point extra credit question on the midterm, do you promise to participate more in class. I got a 94 on it. Got a B on the first paper.
not mandatory to come to class. lectures forever and is so boring. i would avoid if possible
I thought he was an easy grader. He marked up both my papers pretty bad, but I got A's on both of them. I took American Drama with him, and there were 2 tests and 2 papers. His lectures were really long and boring bc he talked about that day's reading. If you have something to entertain yourself during class (pctablet), take him!
He admittedly is monotone and the lectures can be long. Every now and then he is pretty funny. Nice guy. I handed in my first paper 2&12 weeks late and still got an A. As long as you follow the guidelines for your papers, read at least the plot of each story, say something in class once in a while and pass the tests (not hard) its an easy A.
He's awesome. Take him. You will not regret it. Sweet man who knows his stuff and cares about his students and about what he teaches. I would take him again if I could. There is a reason his classes are always "closed" so quickly; people sign up mad quick for this Professor.
Our class felt unorganized at times but he is an okay guy. Lecture-heavy class which wasn't too bad because he is funny (in a dry humor sense). He gives lots of feedback on papers but I didn't appreciate it since the feedback was so tailored to only his specific writing style. He wasn't the worst but I'll only take him again if I have to.
Definitely lecture heavy, but is an easy grader and gives a lot of feedback on papers. He's a sweet man who knows what he's talking about. 2 papers and 2 tests (midterm & final. I really enjoy his class.
Lets you rewrite papers but he is a tough grader.
This professor could benefit from using the Universities CANVAS system to post the syllabus & adjustments. Students would do better if he explained what he is looking for you to memorize for the quizzes. It's horrible to read poetry with no passion he should consider changing the format of the course to encourage students participation.
He was a great and understanding professor. Makes the time to help individual students and offered an extra credit paper for those who did not do so well on the midterm. There is plenty of reading, but he also doesn't require participation. A midterm, two 4 page papers, and a final. Great professor. Would certainly take him again.
Poetry is already a hard topic but he tries to make it interesting and funny. Grades on two papers, a midterm, and a final so be careful if you fail midterm or final. Boring class so if you know you're not going to pay attention don't take him and he puts absolutely nothing online so you wont know your grade in class until the semester is over.
Hes a really nice man, but hes really into the readings. Lectures are mostly him talking and not a lot of group discussion. Only 2 papers, midterm, and final. So much reading, if youre not willing to read everything he assigns dont take him. Harsh grader as well
He is super knowledgeable about Shakespeare and related texts. His class mainly consists of lectures, which can get boring. He's a picky grader but allows students to rewrite any paper for a higher grade. He gives good feedback on papers and is available during office hours. If you're looking for a relatively easy A, take him.
he talks a lot and gets angry when you dont have the same opinion as him. his grading is very tough and his tests are even worse. very detailed and all open ended. hes funny in class but hes not very nice otherwise.
He is a very sweet man. It's very easy to pass his class, as he doesn't assign any work except for 2 papers. I would definitely study for the midterm and final because he's a bit of a tough grader. However, I've taken him for two classes already and I'm taking him for another next semester. He's really great overall and I would recommend him.
not the best...
Great professor. I get people saying he's all lecture and he is, but he loves when people participate and is really engaging. Very funny and sweet. I've taken him for two classes so far and will keep taking him. Just read and re-read whatever he assigns, stories, Shakespeare, whatever and come to class prepared to discuss.
One of the sweetest men. He's an older guy, but seems to be in the loop of things. You read short stories from the textbook and analyze them in class. A couple easy essays too. He makes everything more interesting and is just a warm person.
Take this Professor if you want English to be fun. We only had a few papers, an open book exam in class and a final paper that you do at home, (English 111).
This is my 4th time taking a class with him. He's such a sweet man and I'd take him every semester if I could. He's lecture heavy but don't be frightened by that, you can really just be on your laptop. He only does 2 papers, a midterm and a final so it's not a lot of work. As long as you know what goes on in the stories, you'll pass.
He is overall a sweet and funny man. There are two papers and a midterm and final that weren't open notes. Lots of reading but as long as you get the main ideas you'll be fine.
Never a bad choice. His classes are pretty standard. If you show up, write some papers, take a midterm and final, you'll be good to go. He is a gentleman and he cares about the success of his students. His lectrues can drag on, but they get the job done.
Nice prof accessible in and outside of class. He is lecture heavy and you get graded by two essays and a midterm. Just show up to class and participate. Made transition during COVID simple and seamless.
He's a little boring so bring snacks or something to keep yourself awake, but he can be funny. Graded on 2 papers, a midterm and final exam (he let us use open notes). If you're not gonna read, pay attention to discussions because he discusses the main information that you will see show up in the papers and exams. Not hard if you put in some effort
If you want a class were you dont have to do anything go for it. He doesnt care and can never give straight answers about when the assignments go out. Constantly behind. So if you want an Easy no effort class this is for you.
Hes so sweet. Hes passionate about the content and will talk about it all day long, even if no one is listening. You dont have to participate or do the readings to pass, but hes a hard grader. It will show if you havent done anything the entire semester. But, he is super adorable. Just dont underestimate him or the difficulty of the class.
Extremely easy Professor. 2 papers, a midterm and final, none of which are extremely difficult or hard to study for. He is a bit boring though, I took the class with online zoom calls and out of the 40 people in the class, there was only 1 kid that would talk with him about the material. If you want an easy A here it is.
The man is a gem. He can be lecture heavy at times, but he loves it when students participate. If you don't want to participate, do well on the papers. He makes the class fun which is great.
Professor Slocum is such an awesome and understanding professor. He genuinely cares about what he's teaching and if you participate he cares a lot about what you have to say. He lectures a lot, but it's all really helpful because the plays can be really confusing when you read them on your own. Overall, Prossor Slocum is really great.
Good professor. The whole course involves reading short stories and discussing them in each class, so he really appreciates it when students participate. He tries to make class engaging and is interested in having meaningful conversations about the text. The essays are pretty standard and he grades fairly with good feedback.
Great professor, he's hilarious, and jokes with his students but will also give great lectures and get you interested in like current events or "Gen Z" comments. He doesn't give a lot of homework, two essays, and two exams, literally. Actually grasped the readings
The goat
Held lively discussions about every story that we read and encouraged different opinions. We only had a few essays that were incredibly easy if you show up and pay attention. Super nice guy and I already registered for a class he's teaching next semester.
Dr.Slocum is an an awesome professor and this class is an easy A. There is a reading due each class but no reading check or anything, just an in class discussion so he really wants participation that's it! 3 papers and your done! Just make sure you actually read some of the stories so you can write the papers.
I'd recommend taking Slocum for a Shakespeare class. Pretty funny, very easygoing, and seems to care about his students :) Standard English class procedure: read the plays, try to participate, and enjoy your time. Not boring, strict, or lacking communication skills. If you're looking for an easy time go with Slocum.
Definitely a good option for Shakespeare (I took Comedies and Histories; not sure if he teaches the other one too). The midterm and final exam are honestly pretty difficult but if you study and pay attention in class you'll do fine. Papers were really easy and he's a lenient grader in my experience. Try not to fall behind. Catching up is hard!
Great guy. Pretty funny or at least tries to be. Can't say the class doesn't get boring especially when you don't like the story assigned, but he tries to make it engaging. Though, it is really fun when you have the entire class participating. No assignments, just a midterm and final which are very similar to LEQ's. Would have this guy again tbh.
Prof Slocum is by far the king of the most boring english lectures in msu. A tough grader too. Anyone who says he's a "lenient grader" is lying to you. He gave me a C on the first paper. I am a junior and I have never received a grade lower than a B in my entire college life. I've had notoriously tough grading professors who still graded me better.
This professor is a very tough grader when it comes to papers, and exams are terribly specific. You basically have to be a diehard fan of ancient english literature that nobody cares about anymore if you wanna ace this class. Super boring lecturer.
Keith is chill, but reeeeeally wants participation. All the stories are under 20 pages, and very, VERY boring. It's two stories a week, and I lowkey have only read like 6. Two papers and 2 exams, very easy, but he grades them weirdly. He's very kind and understanding if you need to miss a class or two. Overall, a kind old guy who loves his job.
Professor Slocum is the king of average. Bro is here to sip some coffee and talk about stories that he likes, that's literally it. If you don't care about literature, you probably shouldn't take this class. Oh, and trust he will make terrible jokes. Honestly, he's just mid. eat some food, drink some coffee and just sit there while he talks lowkey.
