Professor Keith Thomas is so engaging and so great to be around. He really wants all of his students to do the best that they can. He pushes us to work harder, to strive for excellence. I highly recommend his class to everyone.
an okay teacher, but needs to learn to teach to the whole class not just a few. and isnt very understanding toward the athletic crowd in the college. Grading is unfair.
Athletic crowd?, you come to college to learn academics not sports. He is a great teacher and makes learning math fun.
If you suck in math, this is the man to take. His understanding of mathematics is immense. He grades fairly and tries to accommodate everyone. try to take this class in the summer
FOR THE PERSON WHO SAID THAT PROFESSOR THOMAS WAS AN UNFAIR GRADER, DUDE YOU MUST BE CRAZY OR JUST PLAIN IN THE HEAD TO SAY SUCH THING. PROFESSOR THOMAS IS GREAT; HE REALLY TRIES TO HELP ALL HIS STUDENTS. FURTHERMORE, YOU GOT WHAT YOU DESERVED.
i took the class because i had to so i just sit there every day since i know all the class material. to me, he explains to everything so plainly, i don't know how plain he can get. his tests are easy and he's a cool professor.
Professor Thomas is one of the best professors at John Jay College. I was never good in Math and what I didn't understand in both Junior High School and High School he made me understand in one semester. He's a great professor. I wish he would teach other classes at John Jay. For those of you th

he's a funny guy that but I thought he moved to fas. I am a dummy when it comes to math, so you have to go extra slow with me.The man seemed like he didn't care. But I can't complain. I failed every single test and he still gave me a C+. If you decent at math, take him.
Although he gave me an A, I must warn other students: Thomas wants things done his way. He'll give you SIMILAR q's AND a's for his tests in advance. Follow the FORMAT EXACTLY or you won't do as well as you think. Attendance is a must. Do the HWs; he DOES collect them! He likes if you speak in class.
WHAT A PROFESSOR, VERY HELPFUL.I STROGLY RECCOMMED TO TKAE THIS PROF.
...this professor, not fair?!?!?! Please, do not believe that if someone tells you that. Prof Thomas has got to be one of the most liberal professors I have ever had...I was doing terribly in mat 104. He wants to see that you are at least trying. If you are, and you never pass a test, he will pass you! Sounds like a good deal to me! Take him.
Prof. Thomas is a very cool teacher! His class is fairly easy. Gives practice of his exams home, so you precisely know what will be on the tests. Generous grader. I loved him!
Great teacher. Very helpful. Highly recommended if you have to take Mat 108
Prof. Thomas is great!!! He knows where you live too.. Plus he's got cute kids who probably grade your papers! He really is a great math teacher, his tests are SO easy. He also explains things really good so it's impossible to fail.
if you are looking to just receive credit and do no work, take someone else. He really wants his students to understand the concepts, for the first time in my life I clearly understood what was going on in a math class. I always this was not my subject, but after taking his class, I feel very different math. He is a great and helpful teacher- with a
He is very thorough and makes sure everyone understands. He likes class participation. His quizzes only have a few questions so each question wrong you lose a lot of points so be careful. I am braindead in Math and I passed. Dont give up if you fail the first test. the tests get easier.
This professor is great, he's very helpful and very fair. Only 3 exams, and homework which will be counted into your final grade. I was doing relly bad in the class but he saw that I was really trying and that's what he likes, I got a C. Professor Thomas is the best!!!
Great Professor! Make sure you show up for every class. Makes an effort to help and is patient.
BYE FAR, THE BEST MATH TEACHER IN JOHN JAY!!! NO ELSE COMPARES!
He was our recitation prof. if it wasn’t for him we would have failed b/c the regular org prof does not know what she is taking about. I hope the science dept makes him our chemistry prof. We need him, he is very helpful and makes an impossible subject understandable. uses free time to help us pass the exams. we go to him for help teaches it better
by far the best teacher in this school. i ve learned alot from this guy than i do any other teacher. he should be a permanent teacher of science
Great Professor
Great teacher, one of the best in the school
the BEST teacher at john jay, he is soooo helpful and so nice. if you show up for class and just try and do the homework you will pass with flying colors. HE'S THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very helpful professor. He wants the students to learn how to think for themselves...scientifically. Exams are not bad (but not easy); also, there are no suprises as of whats to be covered on the exams.
The nicest and most helpful teacher @ John Jay! He is a nice guy and explains everything clearly and does his best to help his students. if you practice, look @ you notes and study you should pass, his tests are just like the study guide he gives you b4 each test. Kind of a tough grader though, but as a person he seems really nice and polite.
Sorry Thomas fans. He does move too fast. His explanations leave you far worse than you were when you asked. If you are a math wiz then you should have been exempt from MA104. For those who want to learn and pass, take another professor, cause it ain't gonna happen here!
If you are not good in math this is not the professor you need to help you learn..he is to fast with his lecture dosen't like to explain the material because he feels you should know it already.
Took his class in the summer and still learned enough to pass. He is very patient and helpful, forget the other math professors take him!
Very Good Teacher!! You will pass, just like he says!!
Professor Thomas is amazing. He will make you understand to the point that you'll actually give math a chance. He does give homework but it helps sooooooo much. i wanted to take him again this semester but registrar ruined that for me but i still go to him for help. he is super nice and i jus love his accent like its soo peaceful to me
Does not like to explain and when he does you just end up even more confused. made the class buy an online membership for an online tutoral which costs $56 and only put up a few hw's.
he is a great professor. explain clearly and don't go on to the next lessons until everyone understand it
Professor Thomas, is a great guy. He's funny and he makes these weird sighs, lol. He is very patient and does all possible to make his lessons crystal clear. He assigns few hw and gives suffiecient time for completion. He also gives reviews for exams. I highly recommend him. I am definitely going to him for my Mat 108. A+ professor!!
Mr. Thomas is a wonderful professor, he takes his time to explain the work. I really enjoyed his math 103 remedial class. Highly recommended.
overall hes a pretty good professor. if you pay attention and ask questions if youre confused youll be good. hes a cool guy and is easy going. class is really just based on your test scores. he doesnt check homework although i highly recommend it. he also gives reviews for tests, which are almost the same exact problems on the test. i do recommend!
Thomas is friendly, nice & useful. Knows calculus very well and teaches it with many examples to the point that you understand it. 4 exams (lowest gets dropped, tricky). Review sheets were much easier than the exams and is not a preview of the exam, so know your calculus thoroughly. However, he does give extra time on exams if you're not finished.
Mandatory class... Makes weird noises while he is speaking... Gives review sheets for exams but its up to you to know everything on that review.. hes not very helpful.. my advice avoid him and take professor Polanco!
I HAD HIM FOR PRECAL AND HE WAS SO HELPFUL! I WENT TO HIM DURING OFFICE HOURS AND HE WOULD TUTOR ME FOR THE WHOLE HOUR. HE DOESNT CHECK HOMEWORKS BUT HE GIVE HW EVERYNIGHT, MY SUGGESTION? DO IT, ITS HELPFUL. HE HAS PAITENCE AND DOESNT TAKE ATTENDANCE UNTIL THE END OF CLASS. HES GREAT AND HELPFUL! TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Pro. Thomas is a nice guy but didn't like the way he taught. He gives HW and isn't helpful at all. Could't understand what he would be saying, He does have an accent. Made the math problems so complicated to understand. Half of the class got 30s 40s 50s on exams. Many students have failed his class.
He is an awesome guy! I highly recommend him! I felt like I was drowning in work at one point and after I spoke to him I ended up passing with a b+. very understanding and will help you if you ask him! I loved my math class! I def. would do it all over again.
Professor Thomas is amazing. I had him for my 1st required math, then skipped a year before I took my 2nd required math (108). I hate math. He made it interesting and fun. You show up, try your best you will pass. One of my favorite/best professors I've ever had. Genuinely nice person, he gave me confidence in something I sucked at (math). Take him.
This professor is the BEST ! he is easy to understand and makes sure that everyone is on the same level before moving on to the next topic. If you need to stay with him after class he will do the best that he can to stay with you. Easy grader and makes the class fun. i recommend this teacher for Math.
If math is not your strong subject, then stay away from this guy. He does not care how hard you're trying, if you dont get the material he will ruin your GPA. Not to mention 97% of my class failed all his exams -_- .
Pof. Thomas explains math 104 like you are in first grade,I was able to understand math finally. He give you the means but you have to study hard if math is not your world.
I can't believe it took up until college to find someone to explain math the way Prof. Thomas did! I must say that he is the absolute best math teacher I've ever had. He's patient, nice, caring & funny & if you have the opportunity to take him, do so! He drops your lowest test grade, provides great notes & examples to help memorize the material.
possibly the best professor to take for math. I had another professor for a similar math and thought I'd die. Professor Thomas makes the material super easy to understand (as long as you actually try to understand because I know some lazy people who would disagree); He's also super nice to his students, even if you're a terrible student; take him
I never have gotten a B in math. Never...until I took him for mathematics. He is just awesome. Anyone who gives this man a bad review is a student who didn't try. He lets you ask a billion and one questions in class and is super super helpful. If you suck supremely at math, he is the best teacher for you.
GREAT PROFESSOR! If you are not good in math or even if you're good take him. He is very helpful and patient and try to help those students who are a little left behind, great personality. H.W is minimum and easy, he gives you up to a week to complete it, Very clear during lecture, DOESN'T ALLOW CALCULATORS YOU MUST DO CALCULATIONS FROM SCRATCH!!
Very helpful and patient. He will answer ALL your questions and will explain the same exercise until everyone gets it. Highly recommended
He is the worst professor ever. I was lucky to withdraw from the class but I would have gotten an F. When he explains in class he seems nice and easy but when it comes to the exams you will fail them. Do not take him. I have gotten all A in all my other math classes (Including precalc, and calc 1)
For the beginning math classes (like algebra) take this guy. When it comes to calc, the math is 5x harder. On tests, if you are prone to mess up on a simple calculation, you will lose points for the whole question while your calculus procedure was completely correct. Yes, thats right, 1/10 points partial credit. Take for algebra - NOT calculus.
Took his summer course, he goes way too fast. His review sheets are easier and homework has no grade. If you're bad at math do not take him because you will fail.
Overall he is a good teacher in terms of explaining the topics to you. However, his exams are significantly more difficult tan anything he goes over in class. Review sheets are no where near what the exams are. He even has trouble answering the test he write! that should say something...
DONT TAKE. FAILED HIS CLASS. HE GRADES HIS TESTS WITH NO UNDERSTANDING!
HE HIS A GREAT PERSON BUT THATS ALL. AS A PROFESSOR HE SEENS TO BE FAST AND DOESNT EXPLAIN TOPICS VERY CLEAR. IF YOU WANT TO LEARN PRE-CALCULUS I DO NOT SUGGEST HIM. ALSO HE GIVES TEST BASED ON 10 QUESTIONS AND MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL 10 IF YOU DONT THATS A EASY F ON EXAM GRADE. LAST THING HE SEEN TO BE CONFUSED TO KNOW MATH AS WELL. GOOD LUCK.
Professor Thomas is a great professor he takes time and goes over hw questions if you ask or questions on what is being taught that particular day. 4 webassign hw , review sheets for exams, 3 exams 1 final. Overall, he really knows his calculus and likes to help others to try to understand each step. I would like to have this professor again.
Horrible Professor! He speeds through the material and teaches certain kids who understands. If you like math , you won't like math after this class. Save your money and don't take this class!
Easiest class I have ever taken. The professor clearly explains everything.
Professor Thomas is a great professor! Show up to class do your part and professor Thomas will do his part! He always sees his students efforts and will pass you! Always speak to him about your grades and show concern and you will pass with a high letter grade! Good luck!
He is very understanding and caring. However, his review sheets are much easier than the tests he gives. If you go to tutoring, you get a leg up when you take the tests. Overall, he is a very good professor.
he is a good teacher, very clear. study and go for help.
This Professor is alright. His lectures are helpful and informational. He is there to help an guide as well as offers help when needed. But when comes to tests, it is awkward. His tests are not related to the topics he has covered, as if they are in another world. However I would say he's alright.
Gives 4 tests, drops the lowest one. Tests are harder than review sheet. For me, I found that doing online homework plus textbook questions, especially the ones he points out, are good preparation for the test. This + going to the tutor center before every test helped me pass. He's a decent professor, middle of the road.
TAKE HIM! HE IS SOOO WORTH IT. Guaranteed to pass
Pre calc- WINTER class (January 2015). I thought it was super easy! Then again I took precalc in High school my senior year. It was fast paced since we only had about 4 weeks. But he got all of us through it. AND I wound up taking him for Calc1
Calc 1 SUPER hard! (Fall 2015)
He is one of the best professors! He is extremely helpful with materials in class. If he sees your effort then he will help you succeed and get at least an A-. His style of teaching and his office hours were always successful. Also, do your homework because it does make a difference towards the end!!! At least get an 80 or better on all homework
Professor Thomas is very caring and wants you to get a good grade, but you have to earn it. If you are struggling just go to him on his office hours and he will work with you. If you fail it because you didn't try or do anything he asked.
Easiest math class I ever took, gives practice problems, and review sheets, and the exams are the review sheet with different numbers. Alot of the questions on the exam come from the homework problems (2 or 3 questions are exactly from the homework). Overall, funny guy, awesome teacher.
he is probably one of the worst professors i have ever taken at John Jay. Took him freshman year and now i am a Senior. His accent makes it hard to understand him. Honestly does not know how to teach. I actually worked hard for his class but got a C. Test were questions based on things we have never even done in class
He has amazing personality and very respectful to all the people in the class. He is very smart and always finds a way to clarify, and explain class material to every single student in the class. He is very attractive and good looking man. He is polite and caring. He is chemistry professor, but mathematics is just his hobby. TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!
No matter how simple the questions are, he answers the questions which are asked by some students very patiently. 3 quizzes and 1 final. I am good at math, so just listen to the teacher carefully and get a very easy A. Mathematics in the United States is too simple
Had himfor MAT241 and he is great. He gave enough instruction and answered all questions. Homework was reasonable (with no large jumps, in my opinion). The test were fair; and didn't outsource any material not covered in class. He stuck to the syllabus rather well, and yeah... he is great.
Professor Thomas is a good choice whether you like math or are afraid of ithes very patient and kind, and his lectures are remarkably clear. Tests are modified versions of the review sheet, so its possible to pass without much effort; but if you want to learn, he can definitely teach.
I am not really good at math but professor Thomas is really good. Study and do your hw and you will do great
He is absolutely amazing!
Professor Thomas always pushed me to do better. Amazing professor
He will try really hard to help you pass and is very easy going.
The class wasnt bad at all. Very clear on every topic. He does teach at a fast pace but this wasnt a bad thing. Very understanding will give the class extra credit if needed . He legit grades the test quickly and gets grades back fast
He is a very useful professor. He makes sure you understand the topic that is covered in class. Everyday we are assigned hw but he doesn't check it. He wants us to do it so we can understand the topic better. 3 exams and a final and he drops the lowest. Always a review before tests and final. Gave us a extra credit project to boost our grades.
Great Math professor who will make you love math
I am not good at math at all but Professor Thomas was one of my favorite professors. He does his best to make math more understandable and he is very patient which is a good quality for a math professor. He is so funny as well, it was never boring in his class.
He gives shallow concept about an topic. If you are a true math lover then this class is not for you. Only teach you some selected techniques that will never help u to get the concept of a topic. But if you take it for your major requirements then it would be nice and fun. Interesting thing he did his graduation on Chemistry but he teaches Math!
Such a great professor each class you learn about one topic he explains everything so clearly and will go over it again if you don't understand gives 3 tests and a final and drops the lowest grade. You need a textbook but I found a free PDF. He gives HW problems (not more than 4 or 5 max) to go over for the next class but doesn't check it
Grade is heavily based on tests. He's nice and tries to get the class involved, pay attention because he just goes through practice problems and gives you any rules you need to know. Doesn't give too much homework, gives review sheets and some questions from the sheet are on the exams. Not hard if you study for it.
Professor Thomas is an excellent professor. Although I think his exams are a little too difficult, I would take his class again in a second if I had to take another math course for my major. He explains the information very well and really wants his students to succeed. Definitely take him!
Never replied emails. Never posted anything on blackboard, unless people keep asking. Didn't post any exam review and materials or past lectures. He won't go through the exam with you or give you exam answers after the exam. He uses zoom for the lecture, camera to the board, you can't even see what he is writing on the board.
He is soft spoken and sometimes very funny in teaching, but do not get deterred by that as his exams can be extremely difficult. Very easy to fail in the exams if you do not show your work completely and/or a simple error during exams. He grades very heavy on the exams. This class is only easy if you have taken with him from MAT 105 to MAT 241.
I have never failed a class in my life until now. He is such a tough grader with no explanation for it. He is a really hard class if you didn't take him last semester. He doesn't even have office hours and never responds to emails that you send. A stressful class.
Thomas is a great professor, always there to respond to emails and questions, he challenge his students but his class is easy. He does not give homework, maybe some practice questions but they are optional. Three exams and he drops the lower grade, one project(like 3 questions) and a final. Overall good class, pay attention, ask questions if needed
This professor is terrible for online learning. He never responds to emails and doesn't explain the material well during lectures. He doesn't have office hours either. You're only graded by tests and the tests are difficult. He did not upload a review sheet for the final as well. Have fun teaching yourself Calculus II within 4 months. I'll pray 4u
This professor will give you tests on, yes, the topics, but he'll sprinkle it in with a challenge as if he taught that information. He just expects you to know things and he doesn't even respond to his emails. Not a great class to take online because you'll be stuck having to watch youtube videos all day to just barely pass the class. Good luck.
He doesnt respond to emails at all. His class is test heavy and his class work is much easier compared to the tests and reviews. He skips steps a lot which can we hard for some students. One project, three exams (lowest dropped), final. Hw not collected but beneficial. Watch Prof Leonard on YouTube to help you.
He is a great professor!!
This was a well-rounded professor who taught difficult subjects with ease. No homework due, instead your final grade is based on a series of exams and a project based on the material for Exam 3. The lowest exam grade is dropped. Complete the review packets and come to class with questions on them, you will see them on the exams 100%.
His way of teaching is very good. he teach in very simple and easy way. 3 exam and Final, drop one lowest exam. No home work due not mandatory to do it. I suggest to take regular class not a 3 weeks, not enough for pre-calculus. Lot of formulas to memorize. Hand written test and scan and submit. 3 exam- 12 to 13 and final-16 to 17 questions.
Tests are DIFFICULT, will only provide a review sheet but doesn't provide additional information. You will not have enough time to complete the test since he gives too many questions. The class average on the first test must've been less than 60 so good luck dropping your GPA.
This guy is horrible at teaching im not sure why he even is teaching and giving a test that requires more then an hour and 15 minutes to do. I went to even tutoring for this class multiple times because he is just that bad and skips way too many steps in class for the formulas. Its either his way or the highway. I dont get how he has a high rating.
The tests are pretty difficult and he is a harsh grader. Gives a lot of questions in a short time frame which makes it hard to do well. Doesn't respond to emails, and glosses over topics. Doesn't tell you what you got wrong on exams and doesn't go over the exams. Grades you on few things. Save yourself the trouble and don't take him.
terrible professor. i don't get why he has such a high rating. gives u a review sheet with no answers at all. doesn't tell u what u got wrong on the test. badly structured class. not enough time to finish the exam. never responds to emails. grades weirdly. will not give you extra credit. when you try to discuss this with him, he shuts u down.
Very disorganized. Let the homework be your guide to the chapters. Doesn't respond to emails. His exams are way long and must show all steps to pass. Does take a lot of points off the exams. There is no extra credit, and he does not curve the grades. Only a few extra points 5 to 15 in exams which does not help much. Please avoid him at all costs.
Doesn't give partial credit, doesn't post answers to review sheet, and misses posting the recording of some lectures. Tests are super hard with barely enough time to complete them and doesn't explain what you got wrong. Always gives problems that don't look like what we have done in class.
This professor is simply too good. Teaching classes the old way, making sure you know the material than having it memorized. He is very nice and ensures that you know what you're doing, willing to stick an arm out on grades and assignments. When teaching, he will get the job done if you pay attention, and respond back to clarify.
He gives 4 exams (one dropped) which is the only thing he grades on. Gives HWK but does not check. His exams are no joke but he does give extra credit on them. Exams are also long. Took him over the summer for 4-5 weeks so it might be different for a regular semester.
He is amazing professor!
Class itself is very test heavy. He's a good professor, the material is just very difficult. Always willing to answer questions and spend time on things students are having trouble with. Review sheets for tests are helpful and basically mimic the test. Also gives a project at the end of the semester.
He is a great professor. if anyone likes math, take this professor
Your grade comes from 2/3 exams, the final, and a project. He doesn't assign homework but calls it practice. You do it at home and just ask any questions you have about it in the next class. He teaches well and will break down things as much as possible to help you understand. A really respectable guy and truly wants to help his students.
Professor Thomas keeps it simple. Show up to class, participate and practice the material he teaches. A lot of stuff overlaps especially from pre-calculus but he does go over it. Practice the problems he goes over in class. The only negative is that the test is very dependent on you knowing the procedure although there is partial credit offered!
His review sheets are useless. You study them but then the test are always different. He gives easy review questions and then extremely challenging test questions so you are never ready.
I'm taking this class over the summer; it is the worst decision ever. Our grade average is weighed solely on the exams; he never checks or reviews homework. the review sheets are not helpful and how each exam is graded is never discussed until after we take the exams. Passing this class takes the luck of god and prior knowledge of the subject.
Does not grade/review homework. Grade is based entirely on 3 exam grades (drops lowest, so 2 actually), and final. He gives a review sheet but the exams are so much harder & he never gives an answer key so you don't know if what you're studying is correct. Ridiculously harsh grader. More questions than time on exams. Worst grades ive ever received.
Your entire grade is based off 3 exams (lowest gets dropped) & a cumulative final. There's like 3-4 homework assignments throughout the entire semester that are only worth like 15% of your overall grade. Very harsh grader & nit picky with partial credit. I've always excelled in math & even enjoyed it, but this class made me dislike math.
The professor's review material doesn't align well with the challenging exams. But Unstuck study and the textbook helped me prepare effectively. Staying engaged in class is key to doing well.
I was scared to take this class over the winter because of all the bad reviews. Professor Thomas is a great professor, he explained all the math concepts so well in a short amount of time. HIS REVIEW SHEETS ARE EXACTLY LIKE THE EXAM. There were only one or two questions not on the review. I'm taking him again in the spring for Calc 1!
After reading all these negative reviews, I was hesitant to take his class, esp for winter, I have to say, the only professor that has helped me understand the material like no other. I loved this class cuz of his teaching style. And the reviews are almost identical to the exam. Very receptive and helpful overall. Taking calc 1-2 with him for sure
I took an e-permit to take this class for the winter at John Jay and Professor Thomas is an amazing instructor. He was very straightforward with the lectures and his review sheets are similar to the exams. I recommend students to review the lessons after class and do a lot of practice problems to help prepare for the exams.
If you put in the work and study, you can do well in this course. You must attend class to do well because so much is covered each class. Professor Thomas is very generous, he curved all three exams by 20 points and even offered extra credit. I took him for Mat 141 and currently have him for Mat 151, would take him again and recommend!
graded mainly on 3 tests and the final exam. While the content was similar, the test questions and practice questions were different.
3 exams (30% each, lowest is dropped), final (40%) and extra credit assignment (10%). No homework assignments + review sheets don't have an answer key, so it's hard to practice these topics to the point that they become intuitive. Tough grader, but makes up for it by curving tests and giving extra credit. Kind, caring person.
