Hated his fill in the blank style notes- had to go to class and didn't retain the info because you were too busy finding the blanks. His final was NOTHING like his midterms so when you think you know the format you don't. He did send a nice email apologizing for his brutal final which was nice of him.
Keith was a good prof, totally agree with the above comment though. The final was unbelievably hard compared to the two midterms. Either way, go to class, pay attention, get an easy A.
I took this Fall 2010 and he was clearly a new lecturer - seemed nervous in class, would often have computer problems and become frustrated and start apologizing profusely. Sort of pitied him sometimes....couldn't help it. His midterms went very well for me, but I studied hard. Final was WAY different questions types, and HARD. Prepare for that.
Dr. Tierney is an excellent instructor with a strong commitment to his students. Well spoken, interesting, funny and helpful. He uses lots of published scientific papers in class which is very valuable and not usually seen below the 400 level. A focus on comprehension over memorization makes it easy to succeed. Highly recommend him and 341 to all.
Material was all overthe place. TA was horrible(saying "I'll hook you up" to students in front row, and bad-mouthing some students who would question his grading). Stay away from this class. Too much info that is useless. Prof was horrible too
As one of the front row students from this first installment of ZOOL 341, I sure didn't get hooked up. You must attend the class and participate to do well. Midterm and final were easy to prepare for and formats were given in advance, if you did poorly, you just didn't pay attention. Great guest lecturers including Dan Schlenck of Aquatic Tox!
Keith was a great professor, integrating discussion (typical of 400+ level courses) with raw learning/material. As a student in the front row, I never received a "hook-up". Maybe "hook-ups" are mistaken for knowing the material? If you pay attention during class, midterm and final should be a breeze.
The teacher is excellent, you need to watch out for the TA's though.Ask Tierney to personally mark your essay, the TA gave me a -D and Tierney gave me an -A because i forgot to cite 2 of my references correctly. Overall tries to make the class interesting, question on the final was super easy if your intereste in the class, if not its super hard.
KEITH. He was NOT a good lecturer AT ALL. Would use the textbook premade ppts, and only read off diagram labels. no explanations, no elaboration on content, nothing. Learned more from reading the text than listening to this man. I got an A+ in class from determination just to SPITE him. Exams tested nit-picky details, not understanding. BEWARE.
I completed two 498's with Keith and they were the best learning experiences of my undergrad. Keith's enthusiasm is contagious. He is always available to help you but he doesn't micromanage. He teaches you to be critical of your work and problem solve effectively. Above all he encourages ingenuity. AWESOME. If you like research, you'll love Keith.
Awesome Prof. Made class enjoyable to attend and the friendly atmosphere was a nice break from every other class. He really wants to help you do good. Will search for marks in your answer. Going to class is a benefit- notes mentioned in lecture but not on notes are very testable.
I really enjoyed this class! This was one of the least stressful classes that I've ever taken because of the weekly quizzes. The quizzes forced me to make study notes and keep up with the course material. Exams are straightforward (with a bonus question every time), and Keith always gives plenty of time to finish the exam. Highly recommend!
Really good prof, and he made the MWF 9am class sooo interesting. Keith knows how to explain concepts clearly and to keep things simple. His exams are super easy, and the class averages are usually high. I would recommend this class to anybody, even for people who want to take this as a science option. Great prof, always encourages students!
Keith was a really great lecturer, and made an early morning class bearable. Exams were straight forward if you went to class and wrote down explanations for his graphs and diagrams, but A LOT of true/false. There was a lot of content to know, but the weekly seminar was a big help.
One of the better profs I had this semester! All the information is on his slides. If you pay attention, he even hints what information is most likely to be on the test. My advice is to study for those seminar quizzes; they help! He likes to ask questions in class. Please answer him! It helps you so much.
Keith was funny but a very hard proff. The course has WAY too much information to study and he doesnt really explain concepts that well. I suggest you type out notes from the powerpoints, include the pictures and all the notes you wrote along that way to help study. STAY ON TOP OF THE MATERIAL!!!
Keith is amazing!!! He was definitely my favourite prof all semester. The seminars are a major grade booster for this course. Keith was also really helpful during his office hours, and would make sure you thoroughly understood everything before you left his office. The two TAs were also amazing, and super helpful all semester.
He read his powerpoints in class ...his lectures were pretty dry and unless you are in his lab or were born with an innate yearning for animal physiology it's hard to pay attention to him..the seminars were a great help. His exams are tough and the class average is pretty high so BEWARE! Dont take this class if you dont need it!!!!!!!!
Keith was a great prof, he made Zoology very interesting. His notes are pretty clear except for he goes into some detail on certain topics so you must attend class. Study for the Quizzes as they are much easier than the midterms and final! I liked Keith, the average was high so definitely try to keep up with everything and you will succeed.
Terrible prof does not know how to teach constantly makes mistakes and can't explain difficult concepts skipping those slides. Instead he spends time talking about things he doesn't test and fish. Honestly read the textbook on your own and ask your TA questions and you'll do fine. His class isn't worth attending but his exams are easy enough.
Easy enough class but don't bother showing up your better off reading the textbook and teaching yourself then going to class to hear about fish. We get it already you like fish.
I just started this class this fall (2014) and it is absolutely horrible. The prof basically reads powerpoint slides and just tells you what you need to study and then you go home and do it all yourself with the textbook.Haven't done the midterm yet but it seems like it will be easy according to the practice one he gave us.AVOID this prof
Class is Good! easy enough, read over the slides and the tests are easy, except usually one or two completely unexpected questions, which dont make a big difference when the rest of the test is cake. Very nice guy, goes through things slow enough answers questions. BTW this person below must not be to bright to find it hard
Keith is super helpful and nice if you get to know him. His office hours are pretty much anytime, the exams are a little nit-picky & detailed, and studying for them is a time sink, but if you enjoy zoology, I highly reccommend. There are quizzes every week in seminar, which help to keep up with the material. Take notes of your notes, it helps!
Disappointing. I took zoo 241 with Keith and loved him. However ecotox turned out to be boring, especially after the midterm. I don't think I learned anything useful after the midterm. His lectures can be dry sometimes and will make you sleepy. I don't see that passion and enthusiasm he had for 241 when he's teaching ecotox. Exams are super easy !
Dude is alright but the class is boring sleep inducing. He reads off his power points verbatim and adds in insignificant details that show up in exams, so studying for his exams soon becomes a marathon. Overall he seems like a nice guy but the course content is boring!
I do agree that the class is made a bit boring by Keith, but the course material is very interesting. His exams have lots of detailed informations that you would think are not important. Overall, the class is fun but time consuming because every slide and detail can be testable.
Keith's a really laid-back, funny guy and definitely made the 9am classes more bearable. His notes are pretty simplified so sometimes the textbook is useful in giving you a better understanding. Exams are quite easy if you study, he tends to use questions found in the practice exams online - and he only tests on his notes so that's a plus.
Nice guy, approachable and try to make class enjoyable. But I found the lectures very dull, and the information tested was A LOT of random information you would not think is important. Difficult concepts are grazed over and a lot of time is spend on a single figure. The only useful thing about going to class was the hints for the tests.
Keith posts all his slides online, but I would recommend going to class as he frequently gives out hints as to what is tested. You need to be careful to know all material covered as exam questions can be on random, minute information and larger concepts might be overlooked. But, he is very easy to listen to and loves to keep the class engaged!
Keith is a really great guy. dont worry about buying the textbook, its not required. All his tests are from his notes but you have to know some really fine details from the notes (studying is needed) but if you put in a bit of work this can for sure be a GPA booster. I am excited to take another class with keith, he is a gem!
His notes are relatively good, but he tests on extreme detail, and ignores the majority of concepts you would think should be tested. His lectures are boring, and the majority of time is spent analyzing papers. Little to no direction was provided for the paper. If you study and go to class, its easy to do well. Tests a lot on what he says in class.
Awesome teacher makes the class interesting and he has a good sense of humor that is much needed teaching law!
He was a great prof and dropped lots of hints on what could be on the midterms and finals. It can be memorization intensive but if you put a little effort and do the practice midterms its possible to get a good grade in this class (:
Keith is a great guy, knows how to make zoology interesting. The seminar things weren't too bad, the quizzes and assignments were easy if you studied the weekend before. The exams were all pretty straightforward, Keith also liked giving hints on what he'd test on. Overall, a solid professor who makes a 9 am class fun to get through!
Its an easy A. Dr. Tierney, treat everyone with respect, he is funny, his lectures are amazing. He even go over the procedure of how to apply for research work etc. He explains concepts clearly, drop lots of hints about exams during lectures (don't skip). Do all the practice problems.
A good prof, he teaches material clearly. Tests are solely based on what's said in class. There are two midterms, but the course was not cumulative; midterm and final was based only on material from the end of the first or second midterm. Kind and funny and cares about students' learning. Would take him again.
Keith is amazing! Really good professor and knows his stuff about animal physiology. He relates to students and understands how busy and stressful life can be. Notes are straightforward, but he does test on small details. Bonus questions are an easy mark booster. Overall a really nice and caring man! Take a class with him if you can!
Good slides, but it was still important to attend class as he expands on slides and explains complicated figures. Seminar assignments and quizzes that were simple and helped you grasp some of the more difficult concepts. Review class where he SPELLS OUT what will be tested. Fantastic prof. You can tell he loves what he teaches. TAs were great too.
He seem very nice in class and quite funny. But let me tell you when it come time for the test he will drag you over the coals. He tests on nothing that he teaches in class. There is so much information he expects you to know but gives you no study guide or even a clue what will be on the exam.
I loved Keith's class. The course itself was difficult, but Keith was upfront about that at the beginning so there were no surprises. He follows the textbook very closely, so reading it helped me understood more. Overall his notes were pretty detailed, but you should definitely go to class as he expands alot on diagrams/details.
Honestly, one of the best profs I've ever had. He genuinely cares about the success of his students and it shows. I struggled with the course material as there is a lot of memorization but Keith is very fair and (usually) lets you know what to expect on the tests. His tests could be a little tricky, but if you study hard you'll do fine.
You HAVE to make sure to show up to class because he talks about what questions he's going to include or not. If you can't take an exam, he's always understanding and lets you defer or reschedule. He always leaves us with practical life advice (he once did an entire lecture on how to apply for research studies); he's passionate and HILARIOUS!
Keith is the man. One of my favourite profs of all time, he is very caring and wants everyone in his class to succeed. He takes a very easy going approach to the course, and makes it less intimidating than it actually is. He holds review lectures before the exams and goes over what will be the focus. TA's are also very helpful and understanding.
He is the best prof I had in my uni life. He's passionate about the course and truly cares about his students. Make sure to show up to classes cause he talks about materials that are't on the slides. Course itself isn't hard.
Keith is easily one of, if not the best prof I've ever had. He's passionate about his work and teaching and GENUINELY wants every one of his students to succeed, not only in this class but in life! He only tests on what he says in class, so you don't need the text but you NEED to show up. But his lectures actually make the 9am worth it!
Keith was a great prof! Loved his lectures and how he was actually able to make a 9am enjoyable. But to do well on his tests you need to go to class and write notes on what he says!
Pay attention in lecture and you'll do fine. I stopped going to class and I failed the class, but Tierney is a good prof and his tests are generally fairly similar to the practice ones he gives you.
He is a very passionate about his work and genuinely cares about what his students do beyond school. As for the course, it is important to pay attention in class, since anything he says in class is fair game. His exams aren't too hard, as long as you work to understand the primary concepts on the practice tests, you will do well.
Awesome prof. Made zoology easy and interesting. Really understanding and genuinely a good guy. Hands down the best professor/class of my degree. This class is worth taking, even if not required.
Keith was the best prof I've had so far in my 3 years of university. He made the lecture fun and informative with a focus on what you should know for tests. I found that his material was a little difficult to follow on some occasion as he quickly went over some stuff but spent a lot more time others. Overall a very wonderful class. 10/10
Keith is an amazing professor. He kept things interesting despite the material itself being boring at times. I didnt need the textbook for this class because of how great Keith was at teaching the material. I did way better on the second midterm because I attended every class after the first midterm, so please attend class if you want a good grade
Keith made me glad I took this course. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students, and rather than making the course content heavy, he made class more "philosophical" (in his words), by talking more in depth about specific important topics than just loading on a lot of content. Going to lecture is mandatory, but is enjoyable. 100% recommend
Kieth is an interesting guy. He is very passionate about what he does and the students he educates, however he often goes off on a tangent during the lecture and rarely finishes what is on his slides. Don't get me wrong, it makes for a lot less testable material, but it also makes it harder to understand what is important
Keith is the best professor I've ever had - he cares his work and the content he teaches. He makes you passionate about them material and will relate things to more interesting concepts so you don't get bored! Definitely need to go to class, I used textbooks to supplement learning but it's not really needed. 10/10 guy. Minimal effort, easy A
He's great! He makes the topics interesting and his tests are super fair. He is passionate and has fun lectures in which he tells you the only question that will be on the exam from the lecture which is so nice. He's great and has great TAs! He makes the course way easier than I think it would be with any other prof. Highly recommended!
He is the best professor Ive ever had. The lectures are super clear and informational. Exams and assignments are also very straightforward. Exams are mostly written response but dont let that scare you! They are mostly out of 2 marks and it is very clear what information you need to write to get the marks.
The seminar content covers 90% of the course. Understand the seminar slides thoroughly and you'll be set. Keith is very understanding and so are the TAs
The professor excelled in online learning, interacted with students in the zoom chat and made the lectures interesting. I learned a lot of very cool facts in this course. What was going to be on the exam was also no surprise and the questions were very fair. I found this course to be doable if you're paying attention and have attention to detail.
I haven't seen people talk about this on here so maybe it's new, but get ready for this prof to just talk and talk off-topic for classes on end. Half the time it's on very subjective topics where he only gives his own opinions, sometimes under-researched or offensive. Very alienating class to be in, but at least the lectures are recorded.
He's got an engaging presentation style that holds my attention, so I'm hesitant to say that he's a bad lecturer. When we're on topic, the lectures are really good. Recently, though, he's been going on tangents that have little to do with the class material that are quite frankly out of touch, to the point that one day we missed an entire lecture.
Dr. Tierney was the most enjoyable profs i've ever had. He takes time to answer every question brought up in class. His lecture style is a bit different at first as he teaches concepts through graphs and figures, but once you get the hang of it it's very enjoyable. His exams were just like the practice ones, so if you can do those you're set.
Tierney had both good and bad lectures. When he was on topic, AMAZING. When he wasnt, not so good. However, he made the material so interesting and created a good space to ask questions. I liked learning from graphs and figures and I think it is helpful. One bad thing was I often had to use the textbook to supplement what he said in class...
100% the best prof Ive had so far, lectures were very engaging (and cool even) and contained many figures which I found was helpful to visualize. Loved his exams they were short answer but it gave you the chance to explain yourself and the questions were on main ideas and understanding not so much memorization.
Gonna be honest and say his jotes garbage and theres no textbook to save the day. 13 written response for middy and he canceled 2 lectures. Got 2 guest lectures and made a random prof do our midterm review. Horrible class
Keith is an ABSOLUTE gem!! This man has changed my outlook on university and I was super excited to come to class to listen to his lectures. He was engaging, funny, and made the content pretty clear. His exams were very fair and as long as you go to class you will have no problem succeeding in his course.
Professor Tierney obviously cares about his students a lot, definitely take this class if you're looking to make a good connection with a prof and learn more about a career in sciences. His lectures were good, sometimes a little confusing and fast paced, but if you like to ask questions in lectures I recommend this prof.
Easily the best prof I've had so far. Can tell he cares about the material and will tie concepts to his own work sometimes. Midterms were a time crunch, final was amazing. He does teach through figures/graphs from the text, so it's a bit different. If you have questions make sure to ask him. TA's were also super nice, really helpful and caring.
Keith is one of the best profs I've had, his lectures are engaging, he added extra marks to midterms to shift peoples grades up, he recorded the audio for every lecture so you didn't need to be in class. He can talk pretty fast but he makes it clear what will be tested. Definitely recommend, he is an amazing guy and prof.
This is the BEST prof I've had yet. This class helped me to actually enjoy learning again.
Keith has one of the best testing styles that I've seen. He designs his course to make you really think about the course material rather than just spitting information at you.
He is ver fun in class and really wants you to do well. The exam was based on major themes of the class and problem solving, but are open book and online which is nice. I highly recommend this prof.
This professor is amazing, and treats you like a person and not just a student. He is one of the best and most helpful professors I have ever had. He is a wonderful addition and refreshing figure in the university.
Keith is a fantastic prof, his teaching and humour encourages me and everyone else to come to lecture! the overall grade was marked on 5 things, 2 assignments, 2 midterms and 1 final, all open book. If you have a good note taking system and a passion for zoology, I would 100% recommend you take zool 241 with Keith! His TA's are wonderful as well!!
One of the best profs I've had. Course has two midterms, one paper, and a final but they're all open book. Lecture are super interesting and engaging. Exams are open book and written online, but he gives hints for what's on it. The paper was big but he gives you the whole semester to do it. Loved the course and the prof, highly recommend!
All tests for Zool 241 were open book. Go to his review lectures, he often uses questions covered there in the tests. Textbook is not required but helpful for looking at context about figures (he explains them in class but does not provide detailed notes) He's funny, talked a bit about possible career paths in research which I found helpful.
Stay away from this lab. During my 498 I barely spoke or saw him. The grad student did everything to help me even though he was my supervisor. Uses Innapropriate language and makes Innapropriate jokes as well.
Most of the class fails the midterms because the content in class has nothing to do with the questions asked. The midterms are around 20 questions and all short answer to be finished in 50 minutes which is completely unreasonable. Class is mandatory because he doesn't post notes on the slides but barely explains the slides in class.
I would definitely recommend taking this class, Dr. Tierney is funny and passionate about teaching the subject and you can tell he genuinely wants to see students succeed in his course. Go to class (you will not do well if you do not attend), and read the textbook (slides are based on ideas from textbook, but he goes into further detail in class).
Take this class! Keith truly cares about his students and has a genuine passion for the content he teaches. Exams are open book and based on in class discussions so make sure to go and jot down a few notes. Go to the in class review lecture; the questions asked are the content that he uses to make the exam. Such a refreshing and enjoyable class!
You must go to lecture or else you'll fail, however he barely writes any info on the slides and doesn't discuss topics effectively. I would recommend getting the textbook so you can understand what he's talking about.
Tierney is funny and caring. He gives a career lecture every term to help students a bit with their future. He is open and respectful to all kinds of answers during class! He is also always there to help answer any questions and support learning. A great prof!
Tierney's classes are engaging, but exam difficulty is based on a whim. Some are easy, some are insane. Questions will be based on something mentioned for 10 seconds. I thought people were exaggerating but it's absolutely true. If you have poor attendance avoid at all costs. If you can think outside of the box you may succeed. Proceed with caution.
Keith is a great guy. He's funny and mentions cool examples. BUT he speeds through his heavy lectures and then tests on something you didn't get a chance to write down while you were scrambling to write the last thing he said. Exams are fully short/long answer and it's easy to lose marks.
