Pretty sexy class! He's super cocky though.
Useless prof. Must say "Doctor" ALL THE TIME!!! Has no regard for students. Bad teaching skills. Plays favs.
Had us buy lots unnecessary books. After finals I e-mailed him twice asking why I got the grade that I did & he never bothered to reply. I know 5 other people who E-mailed him too, and he ignored them. Advice to Watenpaugh: If you want to continue teaching at Davis, I suggest you touch up on your professional skills. What example are you setting?
I am surprised people wrote bad things about him. He is a really good professor. I liked his class and I would take a class with him again. You have to write papers for his class, so if your writing skills suck I wouldn't suggest taking the class other than that he is an awesome teacher!!!!!
He's a really interesting person and his lectures were great! But in my experience he was a really hard grader and definitely wanted something specific from our assignments. Other than that he was a really enjoyable teacher, and I didn't even have to buy books. Yay!
I LOVE DR. WATENPAUGH! He is really smart (speaks like 5 languages including Arabic), charismatic, fun, and well-educated in the subject He speaks quickly and doesn't use ppt so you MUST go to lecture (on time or you won't be let in). Take good notes and pay attention and you're good. He's strict and kinda stubborn but you'll learn a lot. I dig.
Amazing class, amazing prof. No books, everything is online. He's intense and knows his stuff but by far one of my favorite professors.
Doctor Keith David Watenpaugh is an excellent professor. He demands resepct and if you give it to him then you'll get it in return. Very interesting and fun class. Word of advice: Go to lecture and take copious notes. Be punctual or you will not be able to attend lecture.
Great subject matter and his lectures are amazing. And if he's a little cocky, he deserves to be - he's THAT good. Highly recommended.
Dr. Watenpaugh is one BA professor. His lectures are pretty thick but very clear. He also has a sense of humor, which keeps everybody interested. His logic is pretty infallible. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Fundamentalism. This class was incredible. I'm graduating and have been around for years here; to be honest he is one of the best professors I have ever had. You must go to class, and you must be on time. Listen, take notes, but interact with him. His lectures are interesting, the readings are good. I would recommend this class to anyone.
Watenpaugh is a good public speaker, but his lectures are a little dry. He is intimidating, but by the end of the quarter he lightens up. If you go to his office hours, know what you are talking about, he will ask you a question or two.
I absolutely loved Dr. Watenpaugh. He is intimidating, but he lightens up. Follow his rules to gain respect. Attendance is an absolute requirement. Lectures are dense, but interesting. I plan to major in RST now because of this class.
Great lecturer and good presentation of information, but way too cocky and temperamental. Not approachable at all. I don't think I would want to take any upper-division with him, because I would be comfortable asking for help on papers/projects. However, this class was pretty easy.
Dr. Watenpaugh is cocky. All readings were online and copious. Reading requirements changed frequently with additions made at the last minute. I would not take a class from this professor again.
GREAT PROFESSOR. one of the best ive had at davis. he really knows what hes talking about and as long as you go to lecture and take good notes the tests arent that hard. theres no textbook so theres not a lot of reading but you MUST attend lecture.
This was a very interesting class and the material itself was interesting to study. Watenpaugh is a great prof that knows his stuff. There is no textbook so you must attend lecture but don't be late! There were 5 weekly writing assignments (2 pgs). You choose 1 to revise in the end. Midterm and final consist of defining terms and an essay.
Watenpaugh is a smart guy and would be a great prof. if he wasn't such an arrogant ass. No help at all on the work. Doesn't explain assignments at all. Really is smart and interesting but in the end he is more frustrating than he is worth.
I was excited to take this class, but my expectations were not met. Prof. is very arrogant and cocky and EXTREMELY one sided. Contrary to what he said, he was demeaning and condescending when students brought other opinions to the table. Interesting subject matter, but incredulously poor teaching style. Not helpful even one on one.
Professor is very arrogant. Last minute he changed the final to be worth more than 50% of our total grade. He never told us our official grade on the final and simply posted grades. Seemed like he based our grade on the one paper and ignored other work we did in the class. He ignored religious aspects of genocide and discouraged our writng about it
Seriously the most interesting prof I've had at UCD. He's a lot like Bill Mahr and knows a lot about what he's talking about-- don't be late though, he will heckle you.
I had him for my Human Rights in Star Trek class and he was very knowledgable . He is great at getting the class to really think about issues and ideas. Although I only had him for a seminar I would recommend taking some of his other classes.
Best professors I have had at UC Davis. I came into this class unknowing but after a few minutes I was in awe of the charisma and passion of this professor. His class became a favorite and it did have some work to it but it's because of his exceptional lecturing and his drive to help student behind the scenes is what makes him truly remarkable .
Really great class, where you can learn a lot of the history and policy of the human rights movement. Dr Watenpaugh is a good lecturer and keeps it interesting. The class is three papers (Graded by a TA) and one quiz (that he gives the answers to). If you write well, this is an easy A class. There is also some extra credit! Take the class!
I'm surprised that he's not rated higher here! I learned more in Dr. Watenpaugh's classes than I have in any other class at UC Davis. He's hands down my favorite professor and is incredibly knowledgable. You have to attend class in order to pass, seriously. There's a good chunk of reading, so attend lecture, and then pick through the material.
Overall a REALLY interesting class. The whole class is based off of 3 papers that are about 34 pages. You dont really have to do most of the reading but it is good to do in order to reference it in your essays. Watenpaugh's teaching style is lecture with the occasional videomovie. No powerpoint so make sure to take good notes.
Dr. Watenpaugh's lectures were always very interesting, he was funny. class requires 3 class books, with 3 in-class essays and 3 out of class essays that need to be 3 pages long. pretty easy class.
He is well known and is department chair for Human Rights. There are readings but only to enhance your knowledge or use them in the take home midterms and final. 2 short take home midterms and a take home final that is longer. He is funny. Highly recommend taking a class with him but go to lecture.
I took human rights the first time in was offered at UCD. The topic was fascinating, albeit very depressing. Sometimes it felt more like a history lecture than a religious studies class. He's a good professor, has a lot of cool stories and experience, shares relevant current HR information which is great. I still remember his backpack analogy.
I have never taken an Rst class but wish I could take more with Watenpaugh. One of the best professors Davis has and I encourage everyone to take the class. LEARNED ALOT
While this class turned out to be extremely easy, I found Professor Watenpaugh disorganized, arrogant, and sometimes unclear during lecture. I took the honors section of this course, and we had a quarter-long group project as the final. If you hate group work, don't take this class. Had high hopes coming into the class and was sorely let down.
I have never had a professor so passionate and knowledgable about his/her respective field. Watenpaugh's lectures are incredibly dense and provide you with everything you need to know to do good on essays. If you pay any attention in class, you should be fine. His teaching style and course structure is very straight forward. I would recommend.
Good lecturer, but doesn't use slides, so actively listen in class. Reading is funhistorical graphic novels. Two midterms and one final, all in-class essay format. Discussion revolves around the three papers you have to write, and TA grades everything. Prof would be better if he wasn't so arrogant. Don't be late to lecturehe won't let you in.
Took RST/HMR 134. Grading consists entirely of three papers and one easy quiz during the first week. Dr. Watenpaugh tells a story of human rights and its evolution, so come to class and take good notes as you will use them to write your papers. I found him to be a very nice guy with a sense of humor than a lot of professors lack. Highly recommended
Love this guy, so passionate about what he teaches!! Super interesting and motivating.
Great Professor! He just talks for lectures and somehow makes them really interesting! He is very nice and clearly cares about every student. He is very personable and outgoing. He may seem a little strict (no cellphone, don't be late) but he usually ends lecture a little early.
The class was easy and interesting at some points, but I lost interest at the middle of the class because professor's opinion was EXTREMELY one sided and indoctrinated. Essays and in class assignment were graded by TA, and we got no rubric. I feel I was graded for english writing skills instead of subject knowledge.
Dr. Watenpaugh has the greatest lectures! They're super interesting, but there's a 0 electronics policy, so you can't record, so get ready to write! There are 3 major essays and 3 writing assignments, but the rubrics weren't given out, except maybe once. TAs grade everything and are pretty timely. Highly recommend for first years!
Professor Watenpaugh is a cool guy. His lectures are interesting and easy enough to take notes on. 2 midterms and a final, all in-class papers, and the final is non-cumulative so it's basically another midterm. There's also 3 papers, your grade is determined by the papers/ tests, it's an easy A if you're a good writer. Interesting subject for a GE!
Dr. Watenpaugh is one of the best professors I've ever had. He does not use powerpoints in his lectures, but that's okay because he does a very thorough job of lecturing. The grade consisted of an easy quiz in the beginning of the class and 3 essays which were graded fairly. Grading is done entirely by the TA.
Dr. Watenpaugh was excellent. I took his class, Human Rights/Human Wrongs, during my very first quarter at UCD. He made the class enjoyable and was able to efficiently connect the material to modern day issues. You must go to lecture, however, to not miss out on important material. Only 2 MTs, 3 papers, final is the 3rd midterm. Drops lowest MT.
I took Dr. Watenpaugh for three separate courses during the course of my time at UC Davis. I did not always do my finest work in his classes, but he always inspired me to do better. He inspires you to do better beyond the classroom and into our turbulent, yet wonderfully diverse social world.
He is disorganized and doesn't really provide the opportunity for students to participate/ask questions. You have to attend class since he lectures without any slides. He knows his stuff, but information is scattered and not chronological. Very strict about being on time and calls people out/kicks them out. Inconsistent w/ lectures and arrogant.
Prof knows his material but tends to cut off people with their own opinions in lecture. TAs are the ones that grade your work. The grade is based on a good thesis rather than knowledge of the material. Prof rudely calls out people who are late and has a strict phone policy. Extra credit is possible, but barely applies to your grade
This professor was overall pretty disorganized when it came to lectures, but the things that he discussed were very interesting. The professor does not grade anything for the class, it all depends on your TA. Each TA is different and they don't give you rubrics on how they grade your essays. Pretty good GE to take if you need credit.
Great professor, interesting lectures ( dense but relevant) Has strong but fact based opinions. Be open-minded about this class, or you will find yourself complaining a lot (see below). Writing is main grade so if you don't like writing don't take it. No tests, just essays. Readings were very interesting and relevant to class. would take him again.
Very passionate about subject but will insert his political agenda into class (diminishes the value of the subject) says he offers extra credit but won't say how much it is worth. Papers are graded by TA only. Do not leave class during lecture for any reason! Take notes, no slides, no computers or recording devices allowed
The lectures were dense, but very interesting. I enjoyed the lectures, the discussion sessions were useless. The frustrating part of this class is the fact that TAs grade the essays with their own difficulty of grading and none used a rubric. BTW dont buy the books, just find PDFs online because some weren't even needed for tests.
Watenpaugh can be arrogant, but he definitely knows what he is talking about. Lectures are insightful and worth your time. Definitely noticeably passionate about what he is teaching. Do not buy the books, just find the PDF's online. Tests are fairly easy, they are basically timed writes.
I'm sorry but I was very underwhelmed with Watenpaugh, his teaching style is very loosey goosey and I honestly feel like I learned very little from this class. Also, the 3 take-home midterms (i.e. 1200 word papers) have very vague prompts that don't really have a ton to do with the books he assigned. That being said, it's a doable A/A-.
Professor Watenpaugh is a nice man. He knows a lot about Genocide and I learned a lot from him. However, he cuts off students in the middle of them answering a question if they are wrong. This discouraged me from participating in fear that he would cut me off in the middle of my sentence and tell me I'm wrong. That was annoying. Cool guy, overall.
I took this class for a GE. Definitely an arrogant professor (makes students turn off their phones) but is very engaged and passionate about the subjects learned, making the class interesting. Grade based on 3 in-class Canvas writing submissions and attending discussions. Books were not necessary to read because they were discussed in discussion
A little too biased in my opinion, although his lectures were quite interesting which was a good change in pace to my other classes. He tends to only really tell one side of the story-but it is easy to do well if you pay attention and actually read the books assigned. Class is based on research paper and three in-class essays.
Keith Watenpaugh is easily one of my favorite professors I've had so far. HMR1 is introductory so the difficulty is geared toward freshman. Although attendance is not taken, evidence from lecture is vital for midterm essays. Watenpaugh cares deeply about the subject and his students and I can't recommend him highly enough.
Professor Watenpaugh is very knowledgeable about the subject. His lectures are interesting, be sure to attend and take detailed notes . Grade is based on three in-class essay midterms and weekly write-ups done during discussion along with your participation/attendance in these sessions. Also the books he requires are available used.
Watenpaugh is a brilliant lecturer. However, I have a love-hate relationship with his grading system. Classes are graded entirely based on 3 essays. TA-graded essays have vague prompts with no rubrics. In 131 I got all As, in 134 I got all Bs based entirely on small grammar nit-picks. Your grade in this class depends entirely on the TA.
Dr. Watenpaugh is one of the most passionate professors at UC Davis. He puts his heart into every lecture and gives you his best each and every day. His classes aren't too hard; his TAs are very lenient as long as you show that you're giving your best. Just match his enthusiasm and you'll be fine. I've managed to get in A in all of his classes.
Professor Watenpaugh is one of the most pompous professors I have ever come across during my academic career. His lectures are all over the place, and he values his own opinions over yours. Brushes off students. Grade is based on 3 essays, of which the prompts are quite vague. The TA is of no help either. Really wanted to like him, but couldnt.
I absolutely love Professor Watenpaugh's classes. He talks the whole class and doesn't use many slides to emphasize his point which I usually don't like but he is an extremely engaging lecturer. I am always excited to go to class and would even consider it a treat to hear him lecture. I would HIGHLY recommend taking a hmr course with him.
loves to discuss his own accomplishments and refer to himself in the third person. brilliant man who is doing great work but this class should have had a prerequisite. very law heavy and scattered lectures. his grad-student/assistant (Lauren)is overzealous and grades papers arrogantly and unfairly.
While Watenpaugh is passionate, the grading system is vague. There are three essays and the prompt never says exactly what is needed, the response given is even worse. D
heavy reading both articles and long 200+ pages books, class is really interesting but not mandatory or necessary and you're only graded on three assignments each generally given three weeks apart from each other. Hard grader, and generally only one extra credit assignment offered and that was only work a few points. Very inspirational but hard
Dr. Watenpaugh is an awesome lecturer and I truly appreciated the learning that took place in his class. It inspired me to pursue a Human Rights minor. There were only 4 assignments (3 exams, 1 project) so I would recommend going to office hours to get better feedback. I did not and I think I could've earned a better grade if I did.
Watenpaugh is a fairly good lecturer but he is disorganized. Attendance isn't mandatory but he doesn't use/post slides at all so I would recommend going. Your grade is based on 3 papers only, prompts are SO VAGUE, TAs are not helpful and provide poor feedback. Loved the concepts but this is not an easy A. I would recommend going to TA office hours.
NO CRITERIA GIVEN UNTIL AFTER SUBMISSION. REFUSED TO CLARIFY AND WAS AGGRESSIVE. GAVE FALSE INFORMATION. BECOME IRRITATED WHEN SOMEONE PRESENTED A DIFFERENT OPINION. HIS LECTURES WERE RANDOM AND DID NOT HELP AT ALL WITH ASSIGNMENTS. EXCESSIVE READING THAT IS NECESSARY BECAUSE OF THE UNFOCUSED LECTURES THAT WERE MOSTLY UNRELATED TO OUR ASSIGNMENTS
From lecture, you can tell Dr. Watenpaugh is very passionate about what he teaches. However, they have no structure, and he doesn't have slides -- you'll need to attend to have information to cite in essays. 3 midterms and no final, all of which are in-class essays. Also assigns a 1200-word paper in section. TA's do basically all of the grading.
this class is heavily based off the lectures and i really enjoyed it! a lot of the material learned made me feel depressed but it's things everyone should know! you have to read three books, we got two graphic novels which was different and nice. it's three midterms and a paper that make up the grade, and don't come late cause he will call you out!
Although Watenpaugh himself was a great lecturer, if you want an A in the class its basically all luck. Grade is based on 3 in class essays and 1 final paper however these are all graded by different TAs that each have different criteria and you don't know who will grade it. Class has good material, bad structure, bad grading.
I took the Honors version, so he graded all my essays. He refuses to give feedback unless you completely bombed the essay, so no one really knows what he wants. He doesnt use any notes or powerpoints and talks super fast during lectures so be ready to write as fast as you possibly can. No outside sources allowed on essays so you MUST GO TO CLASS.
The prof is an engaging lecturer and cares for the subject. He can be condescending towards students that answer his question wrong or disagree with him. Only 3 or 4 assignments dictate your entire grade, and he doesnt give feedback on your papers so its very hard to tell what he wants from you. Wish he was more organized and clear with hw.
He comes off as a nice guy but in all honesty he's really inconsiderate and mean. If anyone tries to go to the bathroom in his class he yells at them and his grading is way too harsh. He also has no slides and just talks for the whole time so if you're bored by that, DO NOT take his class. Would not take again.
Professor Watenpaugh is alright at first (though VERY arrogant). However, his grading style is completely subjective. I had a solid A in his class. We asked multiple times for a rubric for our final project, which he never gave us, and then dropped many grades down. He never explained why we all received lower than normal scores on the projects.
You should know that Watenpaugh doesn't grade any of the assignments, the TA's grade it all so your grade depends on them. Lecture-wise, he has a tendency to interrupt students half-way through their questions, and during one of his lecture videos, the information in it was completely wrong yet he didn't edit the video to fix it.
Dr. Watenpaugh is very knowledgeable and I learned a lot in this class. However, I found him to be a bit rude to students at times when they asked questions. There are 3 midterms and 1 final paper along with varying assignments depending on your TA. You read 3 outside books in this class which are required! Overall, this class was pretty simple.
Professor Watenpaugh's class was extremely organized and very interesting. He explains concepts really well. The class is graded on three midterms, which are basically a 500-750 word response to a prompt, and a final paper. The discussion sections were engaging and helpful in preparing for the midterms and paper. Take good notes & do the readings!
Lazy, unhelpful, boring. Doesnt grade anything himself, its all the TAs, so pray you get a good one. The dude teaches the topic but grades on writing skills. Make it make sense. Books are irrelevant to the midterm prompts so good luck connecting it. Called undocumented immigrants aliens. Made a major mistake in one of his lectures & didnt fix.
Arrogant and unhelpful. Full of himself. Will chastise you for not agreeing with him. References history but is comically ill informed. Honestly surprised this guy earned a phd. Will not take again.
I have taken quite a few classes with Professor Watenpaugh and he's really great. He knows a ton of information about multiple subjects, which is why some students say his lectures are a bit scattered. He can be intimidating at first but he is very passionate about human rights and I think he really cares about his students.
This class was very easy but I did not like Watenpaugh. He is extremely arrogant and does not like to answer questions so your TA is an important person to get used to referring back to. Two graded paragraphs, three midterms.
Professor was very arrogant. Will ignore you for not agreeing with him or turn your questions into something he agrees with. The TAs basically do all the grading so get to know them well. You dont really need to purchase the books. The class is made up the midterms and a paper so its not too bad.
Literally such an easy class. The second class Ive taken with him and its super straight forward. Downside is the way in which material is presented. I did not go to the lectures because of this and was still able to do good on the papers. Tbh As long as you use the sources provided for the class and pace your essays you should be set for an A.
HE IS RUDE TO STUDENTS AND MAKES THEM FEEL BAD WHEN THEY DISAGREE OR ASK WHAT HE MAY THINK IS A DUMB QUESTION. I FIND THAT HIM NOT USING POWERPOINTS OR WRITING THINGS OR THE BOARD VERY CONFUSING TO FOLLOW. THE TA'S SEEM TO GRADE MORE LIKE AN ENGLISH CLASS. I WOULD PERSONALLY NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM AGAIN
I hate that I have to wait until I'm an upper division student to take another class of his. I hate missing lecture and I make sure to attend each one. I love to listen and learn from him. Watenpaugh really cares about everything he says. Amazing storyteller. TAKE THIS CLASS! ITS SO INTERESTING YOU WONT REGRET IT! Made me want to minor in HMR.
It was a displeasure to be in this class, it felt like brain drain. Unhelpful lectures that did not match his recorded lectures from previous years that were needed for the weekend midterm essays. Use of us as props for his events, I committed to attending every lecture and was let down with so little substance he brought.
I took this class hoping to learn about current human rights issues, but I left it feeling way more confused about the concept than when I began. Don't even bother with the assigned readings, they were never mentioned in class and did not provide much clarity on the subject. Lectures were always unorganized and confusing.
I took the honors version & he was super harsh in grading my papers. He was an ok lecturer, but the best part about this class is that one day he connected his laptop to the projector & all of a sudden there were b00bs on the screen & he didn't notice, & then frantically switched the picture to the lecture slides. Best college story ever lol
I was sad to miss lectures. The class was never a burden and felt like I learned a lot every week. Wasn't super necessary to read the books but they were all interesting including 2 comic books. No final but 3 midterms. Each one just a 500 word essay. Not graded to harshly but entirely dependent on the TA. Not much work besides that.
I thought his lectures were interesting and he was very knowledgeable in his field. But his class is SO lecture heavy and he wont post lecture videos until its time to write the midterm essays. Like if you already have the vids, why not help your students out?? Its graded on three essays and a small quiz, so if youre bad at writing do NOT take!
Solid lecturer, the workload isn't bad. 3 readings, 3 short essays (which serve as the midterms and final), and a final essay. Could be kind of rude to students who are asking questions.
The class was heavily reliant on the lecture and the TA's were working hard to grade all the small written assignments every week. The two midterms are essays of less/equal to 500 words and weighed a lot on the grade. Overall, the class was interesting and I recommend it. Puts a lot of things into perspective.
Watenpaugh was mid. He was always very pretentious and often scoffed at questions in class. Was also very rude about me having personal issues that conflicted with my ability to get some work done. The topic was interesting but prof made it not worth it. Grading: 1 Quiz - 10% Midterm (Essay) 1 - 30% Midterm (Essay) 2 - 30% Midterm (Essay) 3 - 30%
Dr. W is not interested in answering questions unless they allow him to go of on a tangent so he can hear himself talk. Don't bother asking about course logistics, go to the TA. He is v pompous waited until first day in person to accept an award so he had class to clap for him. Material was interesting, I learned a lot but he made class a chore
It sounds like a sad but interesting class, and it is but it is also very dull. The class is the least thought provoking, it is meant for you to reiterate whatever he says in lecture in an awful essay form. He is also weird about class material and makes it uncomfortable. Every aspect of the class was disappointing.
Don't take this course unless you have to. Prof W doesn't record lecture and also doesn’t provide any slides to look at. He just rambles. He often makes students stay past lecture time because of films shown. If the TA doesn't like your writing style, you're likely guaranteed to receive lower grades on your essays. All essay prompts were vague.
I really enjoyed Watenpaugh as a professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches. He is nice and funny however, he was not very accommodating when it came to COVID-19. He says he is older so he doesn't like technology and therefore would not record lectures or post slides/notes. So you had to be there to take notes while he talks.
I love Watenpaugh. He is an incredibly engaging and interesting lecturer and overall person as he has done so much with human rights. The class is not the easiest, but you will get out what you put in. I learned so much and Watenpaugh's passion is contagious. He is accessible outside of class and cares about his students learning and future.
Trust me, this professor is awful. Even though he is very warm to his student, but he does not care about his student. And TA is strict for grading your assignment. Even though you cover all of the points in the questions, but they still give you the grade as what they want. Such as, you are supposed to get A 100%, but they want to give you B.
I loved Watenpaugh's lectures- they were interesting and engaging. Lectures not recorded, so attendance matters. There are few assignments (writing/essays), and TAs were awesome with giving feedback and helping with them. Three required books but you just need to get the main ideas. If you pay attention and put in the work, you will be fine.
Thinks he knows everything and dismisses students left and right. Easy class just take notes and you will do great. I just couldnt stand this professor though. His lectures were informative but all about his opinion.
Dr. Watenpaugh is a homie, the course had 3 significant papers. His lectures don't have slides or recordings, you have to be there IRL to get notes for these papers. The prompts for our essays come from readings and class notes, attendance is MANDATORY, and you will be lost if you miss class.
Dr. Watenpaugh was one of my only professors that offered extra help during the recent TA strike. At times instructions on assignments were a bit vague, but I could get clear answers during office hours or during discussions. I thought his lectures were informative; midterms were predictably based on readings and lectures.
Professor Watenpaugh caused division in class, he makes his class highly political and this divides the class. There's 3 papers and one easy quiz. He's not kind/responsive to students and doesn't reply to their emails either. Due to the political divisions he causes, it takes the joy out of learning and you end up not caring for the material at all
People either love him or hate him. Very knowledgeable and it's clear why he is a respected figure in the field. Lectures are basically by memory (no slides, no recordings, just confusing vibes). Can be pretty arrogant, especially if he's interrupted by questions. Hard to gauge what he wants from assignments. Wouldn't recommend unless you have to.
Professor Watenpaugh will always have the esteemed honor of being the worst professor I have had at UC Davis. Once he told the class we'd need a disability request to go to the bathroom if we were on our period. didn't use lecture slides, mostly talked about himself in lecture, kind of rude. wouldn't reccomend, especially if you're a girl.
Lowkey (very) pompous. Unnecessarily rude to students who were late to class. Felt super unapproachable. Grade might depend on ur TA but apparently he told them to grade really harshly on some/an assignment. Also hate that they make you use a certain essay writing style. Very few assignments w/ a lot of weight. He j likes to hear himself talk. LOL!
No lecture slides nor recording. Does not let people go to the bathroom. Workload and grade depends on TA. Pretty easy class though, just take notes.
Watenpaugh's lectures are interesting but are really not helpful for any exams. I was told this class was an easy A, but I found myself putting in more work than some of my others. I was unlucky and had a stingy TA who graded very harshly. Exams were quite difficult because of extremely vague prompts. I recommend if you are a strong writer
Interesting lectures, but Watenpaugh is a harsh grader and has a large ego (95% of the honors section discussions were about him). He is dismissive and rude when you ask questions. The class is disorganized, expectations are unclear, and he refuses to record lectures or let people use the BATHROOM. He also definitely wrote his own Wikipedia page...
Don't know how this guy is a human rights professor... beware
I really like Dr. Watenpaugh, his lectures are super interesting and I feel like I am learning a lot whenever I come to class. There are some valid complaints to be made about him, but he is a seriously caring and understanding guy if you talk to him. He is be a bit of the "disheveled professor" sometimes, but his lectures are passionate and great.
Amazing lecture as well as reasonable grading criteria. However, high writing skills are expected to complete the class with satisfying grade.
Yes he was rude but his sense of humor was immaculate. There were two midterms and one final all following the same essay format. Honestly, this class really depends on your TA. My TA was amazing and graded fairly. For one of the midterms they rotated TA's for whatever reason and I was graded so unfairly it was laughable. Overall great class!
I enjoyed Watenpaugh's lectures; he is clearly knowledgeable, if not a bit condescending. Discussion with him for the honors section was terrible, though. I had to ask my friends in other discussions for help on assignments because he gave no instruction and his Canvas assignments were poorly written. Zero feedback given on papers.
a very HARSH grader, gives no feedback on papers, do not recommend
He is knowledgeable & funny & genuinely wants people to learn about human rights. If you're trying to skate by without engaging with any materials you'll do poorly. Just read & come to class & start the essays early and it's not a hard A. Only three short non-cumulative essays & readings are always interesting. I've learned so much! Take this class
amazing!! recommend !!
HMR001 was a great class, no complaints except do not take if you tend to skip lectures. He does not use slides, and there are no recordings so the only way to do well is attend all 3 lectures each week. It is pretty easy to do well, engaging assigned readings and lectures, three short writing exams and a 1000 word final paper.
The content itself is taught very well in lectures, which you must go to or else you will be lost. There are only three assignments and three exams, which are all graded by the TAs, so honestly your grade depends on your TA. Enjoyed lectures, they were very interesting and not that hard to follow, but the assignments were graded harshly sometimes.
The lectures can be a hit or miss, but with the help of resources like unstuck AI, the class becomes manageable. Attendance is mandatory, so stay engaged. Grading depends on your TA - some are more lenient than others.
A really dope intro class and super interesting lectures! One or two books to read and the occasional paper, but the load is pretty light compared to other writing classes. Doesn't use slides or has outside resources, so lectures are pretty important. But bro is my goat shout out Prof Watenpaugh
Dr. Watenpaugh is a very inspiring teacher! The class itself is hard mentally and intellectually, but the pay off is worth it and he makes lectures interesting!
Very knowledgeable professor, but very arrogant. Loves to hear himself talk and is only really nice to those who are a human rights minor. Got accused of using AI on a final paper and the one document that proved otherwise was locked behind the closed canvas course, and because he can't admit he's wrong on anything, makes it a pain to resolve.
I looked forward to his lectures; he was funny, entertaining, and passionate. They didn't feel like a lecture, more like listening to someone speak about something that interests them. He didn't use slides or the board too much, but did write main points out, show documentaries (the most boring parts) and assigned three books (I enjoyed them)
worst professor to exist, keeps accusing me of us AI and reporting me, everything is based on notes. No slides, nothing to look back at. talks too fast for me, so I can barely take notes. Harsh grader. 100% gonna try to drop this class even if I have a W on my transcript. Save yourself some peace. DON'T TAKE AS A GE PLS DON'T. worst pro ever ever
Watenpaugh is an interesting character to say the least. Doesn't use slides, freestyles lectures, syllabus does not provide structure to the course and was unorganized. Could not be reached by email or messages, 3 papers, 2 quizzes, and participation which is self graded. Overall I fear I did not learn much in this class and would not recommend.
He actively does not want students to succeed because if his class is too easy it hurts his massive ego, so he makes everything (essay prompts, quizzes, lectures, readings) needlessly convoluted. Despite being human rights professor, this guy is one of the LEAST sympathetic and MOST egotistical people I have ever had the displeasure of meeting.
Taking this class will 100% change your perspective on the world and his lectures and teaching styles are really really engaging. His papers did make you think but they are only challenging if you don't go to his lectures which is super super helpful. Overall, the discussions, the lectures, and the take away thoughts make this class so worth it.
(This is for AHI but I couldn't find it in course codes )literally no effort was put into this class slides aren't posted lectures aren't recorded so there is nothing besides your lec notes to study for this course. Doesn't respond to emails
such a great prof, loved him. totally a nice guy and a very interesting lecturer, not at all boring. Clear guidelines for the few assignments in the class. Not to much reading but the topics are heavy. totally love this class!!
Had great lectures and was very in depth, as well as understanding. Lectures aren't recorded, but attendance isn't mandatory. TAs grade everything. Lots of writing. His office hours are appointment only, and he only stays a few minutes after lecture.
Do not take him if you have accommodations of any type. He will wait til the last minute to schedule accommodations. Even threatened to not allow some students to have their accommodations for the final exam due to his failure to schedule the exams. On top of that he is very disrespectful to his students when asked for help. Massive ego
