rome in hollywood was a very fun class--you watch movies and she puts up all her lectures on powerpoint presentations...very organized and easy to follow....easy grader and easy tests...a lot of reading though which is passable---RECOMMEND!!
Meh, class was fun all movies. does grade on attendance!!! drop ur grade from an A to a B
Easy, clear, concise, helpful. Lectures well organized and presented in powerpoint. Exams right from hw and exam study guide. definately recommend
One of the best teachers I've had at Umass. Very clear teaching style and actually knows how to make class interesting!! HIGHLY Recommend!
I took her class, pretty straight forward teacher..if you show up and do the pay attention in class, you'll do fine. She gives out reading quizzes that ask questions from the readings, pretty basic. you have to hand in 3/5 for a grade...if u do them, you'll be fine!
One of the best professors I have ever had!
says attendence matters, but i dont believe it, as long as you participate, it'll make up for attendance
Excellent teacher - Moves rather fast, but her lessons are powerpoint driven, which she also has available for download online. Attendance is 15% of the grade with participation and homework another (15%), which is a easy grade boost. Expect a lot of quizzies worth 35%, 1 midterm 15% and a final exam (20%). Very accesible Professor.
very good, organized, helpful. fast paced but clear. she gives lots of quizzes so it's easy to boost your grade up. the material was difficult but I recommend her as a teacher
So much info that was just wrong.
Always has time for her students and makes damn sure you don't fall behind. If you're a Phil/Eng major looking to bang out the language requirement, I would say you could do worse than to do so with her. Avails herself of the latest technology, super-friendly and flexible.
Good class on Rome in Hollywood film...watched movies about Rome all semester and had no homework...she took attendence and had 3 quizzes throughout the semester and 1 paper which was easy...She was always willing to help you and is a good teacher...very easy class
Great Teacher!
first of all we only had 3 tests the entire semester however, we had to learn small useless details, alot of dates, and two different maps. The assignments were also a little much. I would not recommend this class unless you are prepared to devote ALOT of time to roman civ. and memorize alot of USELESS details
This lady is totally cool. Down to earth, not afraid of a classroom. Rome in Hollywood? So fun! Watched Ben-Hur, Spartacus, Life of Brian, Gladiator, etc... is this even a college course? She knew relevant useful information. Tests aren't a breeze but they should be simple enough if you attend class/have some knowledge of readings (esp. for final).
i've taken a few courses with her, both in Latin and Roman Civ. Can't ask for a nicer lady and shes very clear in what she expects. Powerpoint driven lectures. Definitely worth taking any class with her.
Very good teacher. All notes on powerpoint, accessible through her website. Extremely organized. My only pet peeve: she says "um" a LOT. But otherwise, good class!
Professor Barnard is one of the most thorough, knowledgeable professors I have had. She really knows her stuff, and makes sure everyone can follow along. She is a fair grader, and the work for the class isn't overwhelming. She puts all her powerpoints and notes online, which is super helpful. I would definately take another class with her.
Great teacher, challenging class.. For someone who is a science major =)
I have have had Professor Barnard for a number of classes and she is always nice and well-organized. Her classes run smoothly and are lots of fun. Take her if you can.
Just took this class to fulfill a gen ed requirement and loved it! She really knows her stuff and is great in front of the class. Her lectures are interesting and insightful. There is A LOT of reading for this class but nothing that is truly boring.
Extremely organized and helpful prof.(powerpoints, explanations, class email, course sched, EVERYTHING online) however, with that comes with a TON of reading. So if your prepared to come to class (3 absences max before it effects your grade) and read a butt load of books then you'll be fine! Exams are EASY multiple choice 50 questions.
She is VERY intelligent and everything is very organized. MAKE SURE YOU ATTEND CLASS & DO the MILLION readings. I wasn't very happy with all the work etc but she drops lowest quiz grade. If you have questions she answers them so she's nice but I wouldn't take her again..just because of all the work. TONS. LIKE TOOONNNSSSSS.
I took this class thinking I could watch movies and sit back, but I was wrong. You have to watch every movie and takes tons of notes, which is what the tests are partially based on..BORING! She gives review sheets that have sooo much to memorize. My friend failed the class, re-took it only to get a C+ and I barely passed. Tests get confusing.
Very intellegent profssor! Def knows her stuff!
An absolute bore. Her powerpoints are meaningless. Just read the book.
She's a smart teacher and a nice person but I think she has forgotten how hard it is to start learning Latin! You'll basically be learning from the lackluster text as she mostly does dry power points about word endings. Exams are heavy on sentence translation which she never really teaches you to do! I like her but it was me and the book really.
More than half way done with her class "Rome in Hollywood" and I can say it's great, not difficult at all. DON'T expect to come here and just sit around and watch movies, DO expect to watch every movie and read basically all the material she assigns. If you're not interested in Rome at all I suggest not taking this class... you will be bored.
This is a hard review to make. She is a nice person and knows the material. But she is really all over the place with her syllabis and lectures. Taking notes is impossible, she repeats so many irrelevant subjects its not worth notes. Her take home quizes take 8-12hrs to complete yet the tests are easy, 40 quesion multiple choice, if you love Rome!
She's really good about sticking to the syllabus. There was a quiz almost every other class, but they were quick and pretty simple. As long as you practice everyday you'll be fine. She also is really good about helping you outside of class, as long as you ask. Really good about getting grades back and answering questions.
She is awesome. I have taken 3 classes with her so far. Not the easiest professor in the world but very organized and approachable. I wish I could take more classes with her.
I had Greek 101 with her and it was a great class. I didn't think that Greek would be an easy class, but the way she taught it made the subject understandable. I got an A and my friends both got B's.
I've had her for many classes, and she is an amazing teacher. She is always willing to help, and is a very easy grader. Her classes sometimes get off topic, but you always get to learn some interesting material.
She is a great professor, always there to help. L READ THE BOOKS!!, you will not pass if you don't read everything is based on the reading and it is a lot.
This class is easy enough IF you keep up with the readings somewhat, you need to buy the books! The lectures really cover a lot of the core material and the reading quizzes help keep you up with what you need to know. She is very helpful and creates in depth study guides for quizzes. Awesome class!
One of the best professors I have ever had. There is a TON of material, but her lectures are recorded and posted online along with her powerpoints which is extremely helpful if you miss something in class or are absent for a lecture. She is EXTREMELY willing to help and you can tell she loves what she teaches. Really like her as a professor.
This class was a lot of work but you do have a lot of chances to get your grades up and do well. BUY THE BOOKS!!! I didn't do a single reading (ITS LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP UP), however you need the books so you can skim through and find the answers for the quizzes. She is really nice and willing to help. Put in a little work and youll do fine.
SO much reading, give yourself plenty of time to do the blackboard assignments because they're tough. Please go to class the iclicker questions will save your grade. As for the prof herself, she keeps the class interesting and is clearly passionate about Egypt. Class is actually really cool if you're interested in ancient egypt too
Very enthusiastic about her work, some of her lectures can be a bit wordy but pretty much all of it is useful. She can get off on a tangent sometimes but even that is helpful.
About 5-6 Textbooks used in the course. Answers to assignments are like scavenger hunts between all textbooks. She is extremely picky about how you word your answers and what page you retrieved it from. Some answers were impossible to find. Like finding a needle in a haystack. Half way through the course got extremely boring and repetitive.
I advise that noone take any of her online courses. I am currently taking her course and there are a tremendous amount of technical errors on her part. I believe she does not know how the technology works and she is putting the entire class at a disadvantage. She changes things amost daily long story short she dosnt know how to operate blackboard.
THE MOST READING AND MOST QUESTIONS I HAVE EVER DONE FOR ANY CLASS IN COLLEGE. HAD TO GO TO THE MUSEUM FOR 4 HOURS. AS IF THIS WASNT ENOUGH SHE HAD US DO ANOTHER PROJECT ONLINE FOR THE SAME MUSEUM. THIS LADY IS ARROGANT AND RIDICULOUS. THE WORK LOAD IS IMPOSSIBLE IF YOU ARE FULL TIME. DO NOT TAKE. I REPEAT. DO NOT TAKE.
I enrolled in this professors online Greek Civilization class and the amount of work assigned is ridiculous! Required weekly papers, 6-7 discussion threads (2 + paragraphs each) Voicethreads corresponding to all lectures. Tough grader. Do not take if you are full time! Expects you to read an entire novels in one week. :) have fun.
I have mixed feeling about Kellee. She is very enthusiastic and helpful but the material is very hard and there was not much effort put into reaching out to students that are struggling (even though the class was only 14 strong). You can make up any tests except the final of course and due dates are a suggestion. Get ready for a challenge.
I took her ancient Egypt class and it was awesome! Homework load heavy in the sense of a lot of reading and citing. She does give you chances to do homework over for a better grade, so this class definitely is worth it. One trip to MFA (free for UMB students) so be ready for that. Overall it was a good class
I would't recommend this class to anyone who is not an ancient Egypt major. She assigns about 100+ pages a week out of 3-4 different texts. On top of that the online modules ask you specific questions which you need to navigate through all of the texts and then cite the page number and author. Thought the class would be easier but constant work.
On the syllabus she says to expect 10-15 hours a week of work. If you do everything she asks, its probably closer to 20. Insane workload. Assigns close reading from 3 lengthy textbooks. Online lectures go on for hours. This doesn't even include studying for tests, midterms, quizzes, and final. Find a different and more reasonable professor.
I was really interested in Ancient Egypt but this class is awful. Sucks all the fun out of the topic and the workload is ridiculous. I thought some of the other reviews were exaggerating but they're not. The amount of work given is overwhelming. There isn't enough time in the week to complete everything. Seriously, do not take this class.
Enthusiastic about material. Effective teacher. The amount of reading assigned is overwhelming and confuses me about what to prioritize. It is a lot of work and I would not recommend this class if you don't have to take it or have a keen interest in Roman history.
The professor knows her topic inside and out, but is unrealistic about expectations. She assisgns too much and from too many sources from online, video, and PDFs, PowerPoints. It gets confusing and allreadings are necessary (quizzes on specifics from sources). This class is good for a Roman history buff, but if you have full class load, beware.
YOU MUST USE THE TEXTBOOK TO PASS! Gives retakes on every test. Lots of homework but very clear. LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT AT THE END!
She is a nice person, however, the amount of homework you have and the difficulty of the assignments is a little intense. You not only read a lot, but the reading assignments are pretty specific and require page numbers with most answers. I struggled even after reading. I reccomend this class only if you are a history major or of a similar major.
I don't even know where to begin as far as her online course goes... let me just say DO NOT take her Greek Civilization course online!! I did my entire associates degree online and never had such ridiculous requirements. WAY to much reading and the discussion posts are absurd. Mind you I have an A in the class but I would not recommend!!
Ok. Worst professor ever! She gave these reading assessments every week and they would take hours. I failed every one of them! Her lectures were unclear and because it was such a huge class, it was hard to get to know her! WOULD NOT TAKE AGAIN!
She is very mean to those who make mistakes. Everybody learns by mistake.
Do not Take this class She will fail you for the slightest mistake. Trust me on this one guy I took her course twice. It went from a filled class to 10 people a class. Trust me on this one. It is not what you think.
yikes! i'll give her that she's obviously passionate about the topic, but she is spectacularly bad at being engaging. i took the class because I was very interested in the topic. she makes it so mundane that I worry I've lost this interest entirely. wont take any more classes with her... waste of my time..
terrible person if you need extra help or extra time, the work is terrible, you do voicethreads for an online class which is dumb
I have taken two courses with her and I have found that she gives an overwhelming course load. She assigns a large number of readings that are unreasonable considering what level course it is. She was not helpful as far as essay edits for the course. She also did not answer any emails for a week and a half and did not follow her own syllabus.
Lots of reading, homework on Blackboard, you've got to love Greek and Roman mythology to enjoy this class. Don't take it if you dont like reading, online quizzes, and lectures.
Took her class Fall 2019 and there was a LOT of reading textbooks and homework modules. You also had to go to the Museum of Arts for a survey lol the content was interesting, but it was a lot of reading and finishing modules.
Prof B was awesome!!! Can't recommend her class enough! The readings were a bit much but its 100% manageable. I kept up w it while working full time and taking 3 other courses over the SUMMER. Great course to take if you have a penchant for ancient history
This is easily the top 3 worst professor I've ever had. AVOID AT ALL COST. She makes up for her inability to teach students by assigning an unbearable amount of course work. If this were the only class I were responsible for it would make sense BUT, as a full time student like many of us are, she assigns the work load of 3 individual courses.
We had to search through 3 books to find the answers, there were no mentioning of page numbers or chapters. The instructor did not specify that skipping Echo videos would damage my grade and continued to let me do it all semester. More self-teaching than actually being taught. She sucks at teaching & responding to emails. TA grades EVERYTHING.
She is the worst professor Ive ever had in my life. During COVID she would continue to overwhelm you with assignments that requires unnecessary reading. During class shell make you answer polls as a participation grade and if you get it wrong shell give you a 3/10. Echo 360 lectures count way to much towards your grade. She needs to be replaced
There is an insane amount of reading and you will learn a lot. The study guides for each WEEK are questions that are single-spaced sized 8 font and 4-5 pages long. You need to read through 3 textbooks. Attendance is mandatory. Echo 360 questions and Museum Hunts are due at end of each week. This class is tough but she offers a lot of extra credit.
I really don't care about egypt that much, three different books, homework extremely specific and gets confusing because she messes the readings up sometimes and I got points off for it. I would not take unless your a history major or really want to know about egypt. I felt it prof was disorganized and confusing while trying to be organized
Let's start by saying Professor Barnard is an amazing person, she is a passionate professor who loves what she teaches and will help everyone. unfortunately, this is both her best and worst trait. Barnard is overwhelming, With museum hunts and Echo360 you will effectively be doing 6 assignments per week, yes 6. I love history, but not that much.
Prof. Barnard is very passionate about her the subject and makes the class interesting. Having said that the amount of work in this class is completely nuts! I'm taking 5 classes this semester and I spend more time on assignments from this class than the other four combined. If you're not ready for hours of homework every week, be careful.
She assigns three books that are heavy and little text but must read because it is part of the homework. There are two exams that are based on the reading, lectures, and homework. The exams are timed, and you cannot go back once you answer the question you have to continue. This was probably the hardest class I took in this semester.
Get the books free online and ctrl+f words to find answers for echo360 while watching 2x speed, in the syllabus she says what to read for the week so look in those pages. Took me 3hrs max to do hw this way, doing it ahead of time helped me understand better. READ INSTRUCTIONS FOR MUSEUM HUNT CAREFULLY SHE GIVES WHAT SHE WANTS ON THERE!!
For an online summer course this teacher provides little flexibility on heavy topics. The amount of reading for this class is insane and her lectures are beyond boring. Shes also very confusing when it comes to instructions of coursework. AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS.
Honestly, if you're looking for an easy A this class is not for you. Dr. Barnard is truly an inspiration for the field that she teaches. Each one of her lectures is with passion for the subject. Make sure you're always in class or specify why you won't be there. Keep up with the Interactive lectures and the museum hunts and you will pass.
I took it for a gen-ed and it was by far the easiest one. She is very passionate and knows what she's teaching. She's incredibly organized and everything is on blackboard. She offers extra credit and the hw is weekly but very doable. You can find the textbooks online. If u do the hw, the exams are manageable. Show up to class, do the hw.
A super interesting class and the professor was extremely passionate and knowledgeable about everything she taught. I could ask her the smallest details about Ancient Egyptian culture and society and she would have an answer. Truly fascinating stuff, all it requires is you to put the smallest bit of effort into the homework assignments.
Not professional outside of class. Will email you on weekends and during break or holidays. Does not accommodate you and does not care about outside circumstances that can affect your school work. Will blatantly call you out. Emails you constantly until you respond to her. Will use all caps in emails to express her anger towards you.
Incredibly boring lectures with little to no exciting factors to them. Besides mandatory readings there is nothing else. Only readings every day and that's it. She will also assign assignments with unclear instructions.
Not someone you want to take if you are looking to pass with a good grade. Very tough grader. Papers are extremely thorough and you can automatically fail for having a small detailed issue in your homework or paper. You have to be able to make sure to get everything right to pass.
Very boring and tedious lectures.
If you are trying to take a class for history, classics or for credit dont take this class. Her homeworks would last up to like 6-10 hrs every week & I am not even in this major. This class honestly makes me do more than what my majors class requires of me. If you are here for a easy grade heed my warning. Not surprised that half the class dropped.
Honestly one of the worst professors I know. Will give zeroes on homework for one thing not being "perfect" (her words) Avoid at all costs if possible
The homework takes about 2 hours total a week. It is an easy A/B if you can read; the questions aren't tricky, it is simply time consuming. I would probably not take this class again, but Barnard is a great professor who is very well versed on the topic. She is strict on "participation", which means attendance is mandatory.
Her explanation is extraordinary. She is very friendly and funny, she gives many opportunities for extra credits, the prep ASSAIGNMENT will not not only complete our assignment but we get a revision of the concept. along with the lecturer Alison is also friendly and helps us if we have any problem. in one word Best organized class
I consider myself as a classicist and took Latin and Greek for 5+ years and yet I was STRUGGLING in the two courses I was in. I have worked with other classics professors and she is by far the most difficult I have worked with. The courses are too heavy and not fun for beginners. Please rethink if you want to take a promethean of a course.
Professor is very funny and kind and teaches well (passionate about her teachings). The lectures are easy to follow and the participation isn't hard, but it IS hard to make up if you miss. The weekly homework assignments can take up to 2 hours. I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you can't sit down and watch a video to answer questions.
Love her as a prof & as a person! Super caring & funny. Takes extra time to answer student questions which can slow lectures down but is very appreciated. Short museum hunts/prep video assignments each week, easy A if read/pay attention to major concepts. Exam questions can be tricky but she gives you a guide! Extra credit offered. I recommend!
Amazing lecturer! Love her class! I sat in the front the entire semester. Grades fairly. Mrs. Barnard pointed me in right direction as a student pursuing archaeology. I enjoyed how she addressed controversial things regarding Ancient Egypt with evidence but at the same time conducted polls to welcome students to disagree.
Professor Barnard was SO knowledgeable about Ancient Egypt; you could ask her the most niche question and she would know the answer to it. She's very passionate about what she does, and it's nice to see. However, the homework was time consuming and tedious: 1 hour reading, 1 hour - 1 1/2 hour long prep assignment, and Museum Hunt PER WEEK.
I've taken three classes with this Professor and she has been nothing but helpful. Much of my success came from attending classes, taking, notes, and listening to lectures. Of course I had to fill in the gaps with the readings I would miss but she is funny, personable, and eager to help. I can't speak to how she teaches languages however.
Beyond one of the WORST gen education class i've ever taken. I spend more time on this classes homework than my actual major. I spend at least 2 hours on homework and if you get the question wrong on echo360 you'll entirely mess up your grade.
