Her lectures are interesting in my opinion. You don't need the book at all, but with that being said you have to go to class to learn the material and understand the concepts. Tests are based off of her notes and verbal explanations. All of her tests are fair and weren't cumulative. She uses tophat & does in class activities for participation pts.
You don't need the book, just go to class to learn the material and understand the concepts. Her notes are posted online as well but i would take notes in class. Tests are based off of the notes. All of her tests are fair and weren't cumulative. top hat and class activities help with understanding. Best professor ever
She's a great lecturer and very helpful. Class is essentially mandatory and you're gonna have to pay attention and participate for the entire class. Doable, but not an easy A.
She is amazing, one of the best professors I've had. If you go to class and pay attention and participate she makes it seem easy. Tests are noncumulative and she really doesn't try to trick you. Don't bother buying the textbook though.
Dr. Calinger is an incredible teacher who really takes interest in her students and their success. She knew just about everyone's name in the lecture a few weeks in to classes. She makes lectures interesting with a lot of real life examples with a lot of in class activates so you need to go to class which isn't hard since she's so attractive 10/10
This professor may have been great in the past but that's no longer the case here. First, her rubrics for the spice lab are inaccurate. Our entire class received half credit since we didn't apparently follow the rubric yet, everyone did and she saw nothing wrong with this. She also doesn't have a rubric for short answers and exams are way tough.
Dr. Calinger does an excellent job of engaging her students during lecture. She gives many chances to earn participation points and more points if you come to lecture and participate. Her tests aren't necessarily easy, but if you come to lecture and study her lecture note thoroughly it helps with the exam. You don't need a textbook for this course.
I loved this course! She did a great job communicating material- one of the best professors I've had. Her tests are heavily based on application of concepts, but if you understand her examples in class you should do fine on the midterms. TopHat questions in lecture are graded for correctness and completion, but aren't too hard to get correct.
She is very passionate about ecology and know a lot about the subject so don't be afraid to ask questions in lecture! She always knows the answer. You don't need the book because she puts all of her notes online after the lecture is over. Go to class because of all the topHat, and she explains a lot of graphs from scientific articles
I really liked Dr. Calinger, but this was the WORST class I've ever taken. The lab had NOTHING to do with the lecture and the TAs take off points for the stupidest stuff. Plus, Dr. Calinger was on maternity leave for 6 weeks and I wish we had her for the whole semester.
I was really disappointed by this class. Dr. Calinger's rating on this website is really high so I was expecting the class to be really interesting and for her to be a stellar teacher. You just have to memorize and understand all the lecture notes, but even with that the exam questions are VERY poorly worded. Overall disappointed by the prof.
Compared to 1113 lecture is way easier but it is dreadful and boring. I cannot stress this enough that your entire grade depends on who your TA is and how subjective they are. It is unfortunate that OSU still allows this type of unequal grading within lectures. If you get a bad read on your TA drop or transfer lab sections.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. As a microbiology major this should be an easy A but this is not the case with Dr. Calinger. She grades arbitrarily and not by a rubric. When you ask for help she will help you but wont tell you if you're wrong and will give you zeros on everything. Take this class with another professor if you can.
Everyone says the exams are worded very poorly/ areconfusing, and they were right. I thought I would be fine, but I am not. The lectures are very simplified, but the exams are worded in the most confusing way possible. The lab TAs destroy you with very strict grading, so it is easy to do poorly. Take Dr. Chiucchi instead. I wish I did
I was disappointed with Dr. Calinger. She was an incredibly nice and caring professor, however her exams are incredibly difficult, and sometimes she had difficulty clearly communicating the information. She is very smart, and speaks to us as if we are as smart as her. Prepare to read MANY graphs in this class, because she loves them.
The grading in this class is horrendous. The content is pretty simplistic (easier than Bio 1113) but because of how this course is arbitrarily graded, you could still do poorly. I had Calinger as my my lab TA too (which I thought would be great) but ended up screwing me over because of how harshly she grades. This was the case w/other TAs as well.
Do not take this class or with she unless you 100% have to. Her grading is terrible and she expects you to have the exact answers she is looking for or its wrong. Her quizzes and tophat questions are super specific and do not actually test your knowledge. Never got out of lab early. Do not miss a lecture or you're screwed with tophat points.
Her lack of rubrics is concerning. This intro bio course essentially became a weedout class due to arbitrary grading and lack of clarity in what was expected. Avoid this class like antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Dr. Calinger-Yoak is a great professor in my opinion, even though the class is incredibly and unnecessarily difficult. She gives you a baseline of information with examples that are easy to relate to. Her exams are very difficult, but if the effort is put in it is definitely possible to do well.
If you must take this class with her, take it seriously. Between your expectation that it will be easy, and the subjective grading present, it will rip you to shreds if you don't work hard and buddy up with your TA. For all the unnecessary difficulty, the way she teaches (and tests) is actually very applicable to MCAT passage-based questions.
Makes an easy class difficult. I'm not joking, the material for BIO1114 isn't difficult at all, but for some reason this professor feels the need to overcomplicate things. Extensive amount of participation in lecture, so much HW from lab, exam questions are worded weirdly. Please do yourself a favor and take a different professor! Can be nice.
Really nice lecturer that cares about her students. The majority of the tests are from her lecture notes, which she posts online. As long as you pay attention, you will already have a good grasp of the material. She does in class activities and tophat during lecture, so just showing up to class gets easy points. Overall, great prof.
Dr. Calinger-Yoak is amazing. You do need to attend lecture because of Top-Hat questions to get your participation points. She's very passionate about what she is teaching. The exams aren't too bad, make a quizlet with the study guide she gives you and you'll do fine. The labs are actually pretty fun and very helpful to understanding the lecture.
If you are impatient, it will be hard to sit through lectures as it feels like a elementary or middle school pacing. She brings opinion into class discussion and is very open to questioning. Exam questions need to be thought through as there are a lot of all/none/two of the above and very similar wording in the same question. Know your concepts
Dr. C is classic proof that you can't judge a professor by ratings. I LOVED Dr. C! Her lectures are interactive with TopHat questions just like the midterm! If you study, you will get an A, even without the book! Plus, she is available outside of class if you have questions. Her midterm averages ended up being higher than even the "easy" professors
Dr. C is a good professor, not a great one. I think she has a thing against giving. 100's, and loves to waste time on TopHat. Despite this, I did learn a lot and had some fun. She is also very nice as she rounded my grade up from 92.8% to an A. Oh, exams are extremely wordy as well. Make sure to understand the concept, not just the definition.
Lectures are very interactive - make sure you go to get TopHat participation points. Labs are unnecessarily difficult for the class material. Lectures prepare you well for the exams, which require critical thinking and that you really understand material. Exams are more based on application of information rather than just memorization
Kellen is by far my favorite. She is so caring and sweet, and she does everything she can to help you succeed. Don't get me wrong, you need to know what you're doing since she's a hard grader. The tests can be tricky as well. But if you put in the work and come to class, odds are you'll be okay. Definitely recommend her!
a lot of people dislike dr. c, but she truly wants you to learn. none of her tests are focused on the regurgitation of material, but she prepares you well if you go to lecture & pay attention. lots of tophat & case studies shes young & clearly cares about topics at hand grade is heavily dependent on your lab TAsimple labs, but super nit-picky
Prof. C made lectures very understandable with a slow teaching pace. Her tests were a little difficult, but she provides the necessary materials to be prepared for them. The assignments were fairly easy and, even as a summer course, were manageable.
I learned a lot from the class but this did not translate to exams as exams were much harder than any in class questions. She talks to you like you are in elementary school, but I do not think she means it in a belittling manner. Also she uses proctorio for all exams while other sections of this course do not.
Dr. C explains concepts in very digestible ways--I often found myself putting lectures on 1.5x or 2x because she would spend so much time explaining. Dr. C also makes the criteria very clear as to what is needed to get an A. For a STEM professor, I feel that she is actually very good at teaching everything in an easy-to-understand way.
Super nice and knowledgable about class material, long labs with a lot of group work.
Dr. C was AMAZING! She explained everything super clearly and made biology super fun! Everyone in her class (even though it was online) felt like a community and we openly joked with other students!
I took Biology 1114 during the summer and Dr. C is possibly one of the best professors I think I'll ever have at OSU. She made lectures easy to comprehend and she was very kind and understanding. 10/10 recommend taking this class with her.
She's clearly very passionate about biology and her students. Her class is set up very well, so I didn't have to study for exams much at all and still got A's on them. The exams aren't really difficult, but definitely more application than high school! Material and study resources are very accessible and helpful. Solid professor.
Dr. C explains things very clearly in lecture and you do not need to read to do well on exams. Go over key concepts and you should be fine. She creates the homework assignments which are relatively easy and tailored for what we learned in class. I got a 97 on the first exam with very little studying. I can't recommend her enough!!
I found her class very easy. She explains things extremely well, she sometimes explains things as we are in 3rd grade though. Her exams can be tricky for some due to every question being a paragraph long but just read them carefully and don't get tricked up by some of the obvious looking answers.
I took Dr. C's BIO1114 course in the spring of 2021 and I absolutely LOVED her course. She does everything in her power to make the course flexible and manageable - synchronous lectures not mandatory, bonus points, in lecture TopHat questions due way after lecture period, etc. Dr. C clearly cares about her students understanding the material!
Learned a lot! The class is lecture heavy and she uses tophat. The course was made up of 4 real life science reading assignments, 4 lecture quizzes, a midterm, and final. This class had a lab component so there was weekly lab assignments. She offered zoom office hours twice a week and was willing to answer any questions after lecture. Loved her!
She's a great teacher, but the material can sometimes be daunting. Labs don't correlate with the current material at all.
Pay attention in lecture, make notes during case studies, and try to get all tophat Qs right and understand why and you will get an A. I never even looked at the textbook because she gives you all the info you need. Just study the learning objectives/review your notes after class (I made a summary study guide). She is super understanding!
i love her
Dr. Calinger-Yoak is one of the best professors I have had at OSU. She genuinely cares about her students and what she is teaching. You MUST go to lecture in order to succeed in this class. If you do all of the assignments and actually try your best, you will get a good grade.
Super easy course but I agree with the review saying if you are impatient do not take this course. Feels like a sixth grade biology course which is fine for an easy A but professor needs to learn to talk to her students like adults not children.
One of the best professors I've had at this university. If you have the option to take the course with her, DO IT. While attendance is not mandatory, it is recommended you go to lectures, however, if you have an interference she is flexible and may provide a zoom link. Very engaging!
She genuinely cares about you as a human being and understands if you are having a hard time. She puts a lot of emphasis on mental health awareness and diversity within the science community and she puts in so much effort to connect to her students. She also gives amazing book recommendations :)
Dr.C is very sweet and is willing to help if you ask her to. However she is a very harsh grader, especially if she is your lab TA, so make sure to go to her office hours to make sure your work is to her liking. Additionally, put effort into your artwork. She will dock points if your pictures do not look like you poured your heart and soul into it.
her class is easy and she explains everything in detail but she is really annoying
Dr. C is super sweet and it's clear she cares about her students. Be prepared to be taught as if you are a newborn baby. Lecture isn't "mandatory" but there will always be TopHats or ICA's every day so if you start to skip a lot, your grade will suffer. Two weekly homework assignments and only one midterm. Final is noncumulative. Lab sucks/boring.
she wants you to succeed. her tests are all based on her notes which are super clear. she is very accommodating with an amazing point system. i'd want her to write my letter of recommendation. one of my favorite professors here.
Got a 91 on the first exam and a 92 on the second exam w/o listening much in class. Look over the lecture slides to study for the exams. She is a caring person and the amount of importance she places on mental health and diversity in STEM is great. She has questions like "two of the above", and "more than one", very often in her exams, however.
She is an incredibly caring professor who places lots of emphasis on mental health and diversity in STEM. Very accommodating. The course content is incredibly easy (especially compared to BIO 1113) so class is a bore. Lab is a bore too. Those things can't be helped tbh.
Very caring professor, easy class
Dr. C is such a caring and engaging professor! I loved her lectures because she goes right to the point and will give you a reason to listen, along with the fact she's very passionate about the subject. Although the content is easy, it is very interesting and I learned a lot about our world and the current natural issues we're facing.
Dr. Calinger-Yoak was an amazing lecturer and I really enjoyed her class. Her tests aren't super difficult, consisted very much of studying what she teaches in lectures on her powerpoints and that's it. The final wasn't cumulative and there was only one midterm. Overall great class and I highly recommend her.
Good teacher and class
Kellens teaching style would be great but it just goes super slowly and she teaches very repetitively. Attendance is important because tophat is graded for accuracy. Lab sections is mostly busy work but expect to be there most of the period as it is a lot. Includes terribly designed but fairly easy group project for lab
Dr. Calinger-Yoak is a great professor. Attendance is mandatory for lectures, but she gives a break in the middle of lecture so it isn't 80 minutes of straight yapping. TopHat is also used during class, graded on correctness, she uses it to make sure students understand the concepts & as a chance to clear things up. Very understanding professor!
Attendance is required with TopHat questions in every lecture. Dr. C is very passionate about what she's doing. Her lecture is great and interactive. However, there are hw every week which a bit time-consuming. Her midterm is not too hard but super fast-paced with lots of calculations. Make sure you really know the materials.
Attendance is required (tophats graded on correctness), although you can have a couple misses without any penalty. A lot of annoying (but easy) busy work. Lecture is very boring. The lab is set up horribly you have a very drawn out and annoying group project, you only ever do like 3 actual lab activities, the rest are the group project.
Take her class! An amazing professor, she is very organized and thorough with her lectures. She cares way more about her students and their understanding of the material than your knowledge about science. She uses Tophat, but allows you to collaborate with your peers and only uses some points for correction. Only one midterm and one final.
Dr Calinger Yoak is probably the best professor I ever had. Her lectures are so stimulating and she cares so much about diversity which I love. She breaks down every concept into manageable parts and is passionate about supporting her students. Take this class with her!
It was pretty interesting; she taught a lecture with tophats (heavily curved), and we would have weekly quizzes, then a midterm and final.
Attendance is mandatory BUT if you email her and ask for a zoom link to her lecture she will send it no questions asked and there is no limit. tophats are graded for correctness BUT incorrectness is half credit. And you can get like 40 wrong and still have a 100%. Labs are fun and engaging. Lectures are fin and engaging. My favorite professor here.
Attendance wasn't mandatory but she did tophat questions that were worth points. She also posted all lecture videos. She was great overall.
She really cared about making sure everyone in the lecture understood materials and was getting caught up. She was funny and easily approcable and was more then willing to help with a emphasis on being objective throughout. This class has a lot of top hat questions though but she gives you more than enough if you need to miss a few classes.
There was one midterm and one noncumulative final. There was a weekly review due every week, along with four lecture quizzes taken throughout the semester. Dr. Calinger responds fast to her emails and is very kind. Top hat is used in class (half for participation/half for correctness), and labs were mainly about working on a semester-long project.
She's a pretty good professor and gives you a lot of study materials for the midterm. There's only one midterm and a non-cumulative final. She is SUPER heavy on tophat questions so you need to go to class, but otherwise the class is easy points. I will say her voice is honestly a bit irritating because she talks to us like kindergarteners.
Professor Calinger-Yoak is amazing! If you struggle paying attention in large lecture courses she is the professor for you! Her lectures were very clear and engaging. While lecture is mandatory to get class participation points I never found myself dreading going to class and you have the option to email her for a zoom link if you can't attend.
Great professor overall, the material in the lecture is so easy that the lecture gets boring. Midterm isn't bad but you have to remember to study no matter how easy the material is. I agree with the other guy that she does talk to us like we're like 6 years old. She's also a bit slow, 1.5x speed would be perfect.
She is so sweet! The content is not hard and she explains it in an easy way, there is just a lot of information on the exams but it is manageable. Lab is annoying but not hard, just the quizzes can be very difficult depending on the TA.
just no, she talks to you like a child and makes it very hard to pay attention without getting annoyed and teaches easy topics very slow and to the point where it becomes confusing and you cant even skip lectures and listen to recording in 1.5x speed because she counts attendance. the lab is the worst thing I experienced no point of it
Dr. Calinger-Yoak was extremely nice and her content was straightforward. The class was point and not percentage which made things substantially easier. There are a lot of tophat questions but you can participate online via Zoom no questions asked. She loves her students and will help with anything.
SO SO SWEET! She was an amazing professor for me, the best one I have had by far. She was very genuine and has a clear passion for teaching. Her lectures and material is straightforward, but make sure you understand it well since the weekly quizzes and 2 exams will be a bit harder than what you cover in class. I highly recommend her!
Great professor and always has a friendly and welcoming attitude! Although there's a lot of material to cover throughout the semester, she makes lectures super straight-forward and the information easy to learn. In-class questions and activities were incorporated into lecture for participation credit and were all very easy.
i really liked dr. kellen. her lectures were heavy, but mostly easy to understand given it's an entry level bio. she's super good with feedback, and tries her best to make class somewhat entertaining. she can be tough with labs, and tophat is mandatory, but other than that really no complaints. bad at responding to emails though.
Dr. C's class was pretty easy overall, especially compared to 1113. TopHat questions are used throughout lecture and are all usually pretty straight forward. There was one midterm and a non-cumulative final and as long as you understood the basics of the content, you would likely do well.
Fantastic, welcoming & very friendly. She clearly cares about the material, she even shared personal stories in some chapters. It's much easier than 1113, but I think it's because she made the content much more engaging. Some complained about her chirpy tone & quirkiness, but I'd rather that than a monotonous & boring teacher. Highly recommend her!
Dr. Calinger-Yoak is one of the best biology professors I've ever had in my college career. She truly cares about her students and makes sure that we understand the material thoroughly! I really enjoyed going to her lectures. If you take her, you are in good hands!!
Genuinely one of the best professors I've had at Ohio State. She'd sit by a different group of students every class period to try and get to know them. Exams were super fair and straight forward, there was no content on the exam that we didn't practice in lecture multiple times prior. Lab was well structured and also very straight forward.
You can tell she really cares about teaching and her students! Very nice and helpful overall, but you do need to attend the lecture to get a good grade or at least watch the lecture videos. She teaches in a very interactive way, which I think contributes to bettering the understanding of the material.
Very kind and wants students to succeed. Her lectures were great, she explained concepts well and was pretty inspirational. Happy to answer questions and help students. She was very helpful in office hours. Also gave tons of extra cred opportunities. Textbook is given online. Does Tophat questions; show up and you'll be fine.
Dr. C was amazing!!! She truly cares about her students and what she's teaching. Attendance is mandatory but she gives enough top hat points that you can miss a few classes and still earn full credit! I was concerned at the beginning of the semester but she helped posted extra resources that gave me a lot of help with the lecture quizzes 10000/10
Honestly like the Dr. Fus of Biology. Explained complicated concepts very clearly and would walk around during lecture to help students. The course is designed to have biweekly quizzes instead of exams and even if you did bad on a few, it was very possible to have an A! Also gave plenty of extra credit. Also very lenient with grades, will round up!
