He's really hard. But you learn a lot in the class that will help later on. He's a good teacher and the class is fun if you like debating...
Hard but entertaining professor. I had doubts about doing as well as I wanted in the course until I received my grade. He will push you to think in a different way which is what college is about right?
If you can't handle having your arguments and comments being torn apart, don't take this class. If you can think you can handle it, you'll find that you can actually learn from Potter's comments. Comes off as arrogant, perhaps he is, but listen to him.
Ethnocentric perhaps, but a great teacher.

he was an excellent teacher, he made us think. i liked the fact that he could argue something even if he didnt agree with it. not the typical conservative in utah county.
His ethics and values class is soo good. He is definitely an excellent teacher, who bases his class on the importance of a valid argument. He is also super hot!
he jumps around alot and gets way off subject. he's a cool guy and his class is fun but he is not organized, thus making learning tough.
This class was very difficult, but I learned quite a bit and ultimately appreciated philosophy more. Potter's examples are generally accessable and make boring topics interesting. He's also very attractive and that can make the class even better.
I found Potter to be a very easy going teacher. He sometimes lacked clarity but I never found any of his assignments hard. He WILL make you think and participate! It was a fun class.
Be prepared to argue because this guy really knows his stuff. But don't be afraid, he likes it when people challenge him. You'll do a lot of thinking in this class about things you've never even thought of thinking about.
If you want a good class with a Prof. that really knows what he is talking about take any class from him. I had him twice and I'm looking forward to the next classes that I will have from him. He is willing to discuss any issue that you have but be ready to back your idea up.

Stay away if you are afraid of controversy. He is a 70's hippy wantabe. Good teacher, but it is obvious that he has a political agenda (liberal). :0)
Great teacher. Only homework is reading. Grades are based on Notes+Tale Home Final+Class Participation=A. It is that easy. He is very opinionated but what is the purpose of philosophy without opinions. Philosophy without opinions is like a kiss without a hug. He is definetly one of the best teachers at the school.

He is a wonderful teacher. He is very animated. I found the class to be enjoyable.
favorite teacher at uvsc, little hippy dude but he doesnt preach to the mormon choir.
Was NOT looking forward to this class, and he SCARES you into thinking that he's a beast and that he will hate you and embarass you in his speech on the 1st day, but it's all an act. He's awesome, DON'T DROP HIM!! It quickly became my favorite class of the term, completely because of his teaching. SOOO smart, challenging, and funny. Take him.
Very good class for those really "seeking an education" give this awesome professor a chance and he will give you a confusing blow with the problem of evil, very qualifed and highly astute to the principles and attributes of the specified field.
Potter is the best--everyone's favorite teacher if you are will to listen and be open minded. He does like to argue--What do you expect--its a philosophy class! If you're super conservative he will rub you the wrong way but won't judge you or grade you poorly because you don't see eye to eye.
If you are close minded and unable to look at the other side of an argument dont bother. This is a class for people who have a desire to expand their perspective. Great class and an excellent teacher.
potter is a awesome teacher. keeps it fun, explains well so everyone can understand. uses movies and music.
Dennis does not teach. He comes to class to recruit potential Marxist and harrass anyone who might not join the ideology. His lectures are unstructured. He just likes to debate students and the only method of argument he uses is appeals to authority. He quotes some "academic expert" and thinks that should end the discusion. He's on a Power Trip.
Ethics? You must be kidding. What kind of ethics is someone who just presents the liberal side. Values? He tries to indoctrinate you into his liberal views. His methods totally contradict what ethics and values are all about. Run away quickly!!
He is way awesome! One of the best test philosophy teachers at UVSC. Has a unique way of teaching that is really affective. Awesome teacher I highly recommend taking him. Has a lot of knowledge about various subjects. May have a twisted grasp on some views but that is what makes it fun.
He is awesome!
Dennis is a very good professor. He is challenging intellectually and he knows how to make concepts interesting. Although he is fairly liberal, he is also very respectful of everyone's beliefs, I think that he is essential for uvsc, there need to be more professors that are willing to be objective when it comes to politics.
He is a really interesting professor... his is the only class I ever really look forward to going to... plus he is pretty hot...
Dennis is an amazing professor. He will help you see the world in a different way--especially if you have been sheltered your entire life. This is not a bad thing. Maybe by the time you are 23 you should get out of your shell. :) Dennis is easy going and extremely smart. Class is fun, too!
Grade is mostly based on participation-just make sure he knows your name by the end of class. He addresses both sides of issues and doesn't only tell "one side". Interesting class.
Over explains things, as if talking to himself. Friendly. Fun. Good spirited. Works hard to explain things. Too complex. Dresses drag- cool with me, but maybe not for some BYU-babies. Professors get caught up in their world of philosophy, they sometimes forget they need to "dumb things down" a little for students who aren't Phil majors.
Brilliant and passionate. Pushes you to think for yourself. Hard on the grades but justifiably so. If you can logically defend your point, it's all he wants from you. Talks about a million mph and has a huge vocab, but not impossible to follow if you care about the material.
Potter is an awesome teacher. He's a lot more liberal than most professors in Utah and it really helps to hear that side of arguments. His class can be a little tough sometimes, but it's well worth it. Easily the best professor I've had in college.
Intro to Philosophy: Prof Potter is really cool and very smart. The grade is comprised of 33% participation (get involved by talking and asking questions!), 33% mid-term and final, and 33% 2,500 word term paper. Just come and try with something, he doesn't fail people--unless they UW.
Professor Potter makes philosophy palatable--and he didn't require any tests, quizzes, or assignments for this class, aside from what he calls an "anti-scrap book" that serves as your midterm and final projects.
He went off on tons of tangents. You may think he's cool-if you're weird. I honestly do not recommend him if you want to learn something useful.
He's nasty and very offensive. He complains about Utah and yet he teaches here? I don't understand this guy at all!
he is really hot and i love that he is so striaght forward with things. he handles all the issues with maturity and he's a beautiful shocker for the uptight sheltered culture found in utah valley! i loved this class and i love him!! he's dead sexy
Potter is pretty much amazing. His religion class is great because he's an athiest. Very refreshing. He;s intelligent and asks a lot of his students, but I've learned a lot because of that. Potter is by far my favorite prof. at uvsc.
Phil. of Religion: Whether or not professor Potter is gay or a Utah-hater or an atheist (he really never lets anyone know anyway) really has nothing to do with his fairness and knowledge on the subject. I really enjoy his classes because there is no meaningless busy work to him--just class participation and a couple essays. Highly recommended.
This class is certainly not an easy A, unless you are a philosophy genius. You wont get an A unless he knows your name by the end and you read the book. He is a very smart man and has very strong opinions. But he does let you disgree with him since most around here are Mormon and will pretty much always disagree with him.
I've learned a lot in this class. Arguably more than in any of my other classes. Potter is really smart and really liberal and will force you to see things from a new perspective, which I like. I would definately recommend him.
He just lectures and lectures and never stops to breath. He expects you to understand everything he says, and when you ask a question he gives you a response of "I already explained that idiot!" He graded pretty harshly on the only things you do in his class, a mid term, final and a term paper that he forgot to tell us about...
I hate the class ethics and Values but overall he is a pretty good teacher. He really gets into the subject and can at times be a little over enthusiastic about stuff in my oppinion. His tests are pretty easy and you only have to write one final paper though.
Not the easiest class to comprehend. But it is interesting. Potters very opinionated, some say arrogant.
Dennis is the best prof I have ever had at uvsc. if you are into philosophy at all you will love his class. he is a must have prof. he will open your mind to new ideas and new concepts. fair grader and an overall excellent teacher.
He freaked out at students in the class twice :) A few times he jumped off chairs, and he always turned off the lights like some hungover vampire! :D Seriously though, brilliant, passionate guy, kind of arrogant. He made me think and I had to work hard to understand new concepts. Awesome class!
Required for Philosophy Majors. Nothing rigorous. Just read the assigned reading, show up, discuss it. That's all. Dennis is awesome.
I hate ethics and values, but Dennis is brilliant. Highly controversial--but a very thought-provoking professor. I loved going to class. The homework was not as easy as I first thought it would be,but it was fair. Make sure you PARTICIPATE regularly in class discussion--your grade depends on it. If you are very conservative, beware.
very controversial, but open to other opinions. I pity those who were to closed-minded to give him a chance and walked out the first day. He is crazy and weird, but know his stuff. He really is a very smart man
Potter's class is very entertaining. He is very knowledgeable, but is sometimes hard to understand because so. You can get a decent grade if you attend class and read the text. Reviews help lots when studying for a test!
Dennis is probably the most interesting instructor that I have ever had.
Very radical and liberal. Likes to hear his own voice and argue instead of actually teaching ethics and values. Berates and harrasses students. Believes intellect is higher than anyone in the class. No wonder people are constantly walking out.
Potter may seem fun and exciting at first, but it becomes clear he is only there challenge and argue. Ethics and Values is not a religion class. A professor should encourage students, not beat them down in class. Do not recommend at all.
He is a genius at logic, but it was kinda hard to always follow what he was trying to get across to the class.
This class (Formal Logic) was extremely hard. Dennis taught it well - much more conceptually than most logic courses - but the subject itself is very difficult to understand well. This is by far the hardest class I've taken, but he's very intelligent and grades EXTREMELY fairly. Take the class, you'll be smarter because of it.
He is a very good teacher and very smart. I would take from him again. Whats funny is that he is a BYU grad
wow i cant beleive how horrible of a teacher he is and his aids the most closed minded person who thinks he is open minded likes to make jokes at the expense of mormons very sad to see uvu hire someone so disrespectful
Very knowledgable on the subject. It seemed like he didin't plan his lessons before coming in, but I learned SO MUCH. He's very liberal and not very nice to Mormons but it would be highly andvantagous for you not to get offended because you'll learn a lot. I would reccomend him to everyone. He's amazing.
Oh Ethics & Values. Nobody likes this class to begin with. Dennis will teach you what you need to know, as well as Method of Argument, which is crucial. You'll get lectures on Kant, Mill, Rand, Ayers, Russel, Marquis, Singer and Marx. Would recommend. My class was questionably brain dead as far as participation goes, which makes the class no fun.
He is a really good teacher and helps out a bunch. I recommend the class.
All this negativity is really funny to me, I took phil. of religion from him for god's sake and just because he has a sense of humor doesn't mean he's deriding your beliefs! He doesn't hide the fact that he's ex-mormon but he never attacks mormons or their beliefs, you all need to grow up! Anyway, he's a great teacher, really knows his stuff.
Class was clearly unorganized. Potter generally knows what he is talking about, yet struggles to convey the lesson to the student and often ends up presuming you know what he is talking about. There was no real feedback system to find out how one is doing or application of the skill except for midterm/final/term paper. Take it from Foster instead!!
prof potter could be a hard person to follow but don't let that frustrate you. he WILL help you if you need it. the most important part of his 1250 class is to READ THE BOOK. the book has a website that you can do practice questions on. this class should be required. ps read the other comments. hilarious. cross dressed. ignore the offended mormons.
Very helpful professor. Really understands philosophy and teaches it well. I would definitely recommend Dr. Potter.
this guy is really smart. he brings alot of energy to class and has a great sense of humor. he diffenatly challenges your thoughts and beliefs and thats what i love about his teaching the most. if your not willing to think logically and take a challenge dont take this class.
I highly recommend Dr. Potter. His tests were all essays (some of them timed), which is the most difficult for me personally, but he graded very fairly. He tested on strait philosophy and argument (not names and dates) which created fewer distractions and gave greater focus to the different concepts and arguments. I learned a lot from this class.
potter was a pretty good teacher. he has alot of energy, and a funny sense of humor. he doesnt give any feedback on the exams though. the book is used alot, and he's nice about the exams. he was my first teacher crush too! haha
I've taken more classes from Dennis than from anyone else, and I always learn a lot. This rating is for Philosophy of Language, which is a difficult class, but Dennis organizes it in such a way that students can succeed if they put forth the effort. Highly recommended.
Potter really knows he stuff, and he can definitely teach it to you as long as your willing to ask clarification questions to understand. He is pretty opinionated but doesnt let it show too much. Not a super nice guy, but he does help you succeed. No homework, just a midterm and a final and one paper. If you go to class and listen you'll do well.
Very good discussion teacher, very fair. Fun class and Potter gives many viewpoints from many angles. Very respectful of opinion and belief, as long as you can back it with good argument. Great class overall. Unorthodox in style, but nice guy.
He can start pretty good in-class discussions and he's pretty knowledgeable about the subject... Well, he was amiss on a few scientific/historical concepts, but with philosophy itself he is very efficient. The best thing though: He gave some of the best exams I have ever taken in college/high school and grades well.
I wrote 26 pages for him doing my best work. If he doesn't like you cause he thinks you might be a conservative. Say goodbye to your grade no matter what the requirements are that you've already satisfied.
If you are a conservative, leave your beliefs at the door. If you are in the military, might be best not to mention it. I would not recommend him as a professor. I only took this class because it was part of the general eds.
If you are capable of having an open mind, take Dennis Potter. He is extremely passionate about the subjects he teaches, and extremely extremely knowledgeable as not only has he studied under renowned Philosophers such as Alvin Plantiga, but he has the experience of being a very conservative Mormon to a very liberal atheist. Willing to slow down,2!
He's really good at explaining the concepts in Phil (I read the text AFTER our lectures so I could understand the book). He will answer any questions you have. Not the easiest teacher (even though all I had were two tests and a paper), but he knows his stuff.
He really knows the subject, and is very to the point. There isn't a lot of cushion room, so know the subject and do your assignments. MAKE SURE you keep up on your homework all semester. I didn't and I felt completely overwhelmed by the end of the semester. Overall, I would definitely recommend him.
Dennis is awesome. He really knows the subject very very well. I felt many times lost in the discussions but that's because I'm not a philosophy major. I learned more about myself and my LDS faith in an academic setting than ever before. I think the final is a bit to extreme but that's just my opinion. In any case. Great teacher and willing to help
This is a great class, Dennis is one of the finest. His writing on the LDS religion are very well done and give an LDS perspective to the classic religious arguments. There is a take home Mid-term and an in-class final; two 7-10 pg papers. Dr Potter allowed us to rewrite the 1st and use it for our 2nd. Which was a huge help.
This was a difficult class because of the subject matter, but was well-taught. Dennis cares about philosophy and expects a lot from students. Don't take this class if you aren't committed to philosophy, doing your readings, doing your assignments, and participating. I worked really hard and got an A-, which I'm proud of. Dennis is wonderful.
He is not a super friendly guy or anything, but the concepts discussed in class are easy. I found it extremely hard to follow along, but I think that was more so my fault than his. Not a super bad teacher. And might I add he's smokin' hot.
Being the analytic philosopher in the department, he was probably more clear and straightforward than other professors. When I didn't understand something, he was happy to sit with me and clarify or explain things. I would take a class from him again!
Very smart guy. No quizzes or homework assignments- just a couple big essay exams, term paper, and final.
very demeaning and does not like hearing your arguments in class. Says open minded but really just bashes lds church.
This class is not an easy A you have to put in the right amount of work to pass. I will definitely take this teacher again. He is an expert in this field and one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's very smart and funny, I look forward to talking future philosophy classes from him !
I took his Formal Logic class and just about died. I do not have a math mind so unless you do, it will be excruciating. He only has 3 tests for the whole semester and no homework. The tests are 2 parts-take home and in class. They are really hard and the take home is long and time consuming (at least 4 hours). He will do study sessions once a week
Brilliant professor. If you are interested in philosophy he is very knowledgeable on topics of religion and mathematics. Inspired to take more philosophy!
Prof. Potter is one of the best professors at UVU. Just make sure you show up to every class session, do more than your expected share of logic exercises at home, and recite in your mind the full definitions of the concepts involved in the class, and you should be fine. Potter is a fair grader, and will help you out as long as you break a sweat.
I enjoyed the class and did well, but I understand why others did not. If you want to do well, don't simply go to class. Do as many problems as you can at home, and go see Potter if you don't understand something! They will help you if you go to them. Don't be a passive student, especially for a class that's required!!!
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!
I had Kelli for Philosophy forum. I really enjoyed this class!! I got a lot out of it and Kelli was great at explaining a lot of philosophy terms and problems. Mind was blown a few times. Some ppl who had her for Logic said that class was tough w/ her but that wasn't true in forum. Easy class. Show up, pass. FYI she's trans, hence the pronoun swap.
Had us read lots of different articles that were interesting. Talked a lot about religion. Kelli has a strong opinion about mormons. Didn't enjoy all the philosophy conversations. The discussions not about lds people were really interesting. I have a new take on Buddhism and the concept of time!
Kelli is a wonderful teacher. I was a little intimidated of her at first when I took her PHIL forum class a few semesters ago, but am currently taking two classes from her and she is a real gem. In Analytic Phil, she really knows her stuff, is passionate, enthusiastic, and caring. She has a very logical analytic way of thinking/teaching.

Gives good feedback and overall a good professor. Two quizzes, a group discussion, and a paper due within every two weeks. Took this class online so didnt have much interaction with her. Only issue is that she takes a little while to grade your work.
Depends on which course you're taking. Her formal logic courses really tired out a lot of my friends. But for general credit classes like what I had she's pretty normal difficulty. Interesting lecturer, and good at giving cool info and opinions of her own while teaching all the needed material well too. Just be careful which course you're taking.
I've taken two classes from her and both were fantastic. If you are having troubles with her formal logic class then you should practice more! She was intimidating at first but if you attend class you realize how nice and how caring she is of her students. She is also the most respectable and most knowledgeable Prof I've ever encountered. Fantastic
Be prepared to write a lot . The exams are 2 essays each (which are take home, so that's nice.) The only thing I didn't really like was that there was no rubric given for the essays, you only get the prompt. I wish she had example essays or at least pushed you in the right direction. Other than that everything was awesome! Great lectures!
Kelli is an absolute gem and one of UVU's best. I'm nearing the end of her Marxist Philosophy class and it's challenging and fast-paced and very rewarding. She also handled the shift to online classes extremely well, preparing in early March, and has been very understanding about students' challenges and needs during this time.
Professor Potter was super nice and was passionate but this class just wasn't my favorite. I felt like we were all over the place and we talked about some stuff that I just don't understand how it was beneficial for my education. You talk about some heavy subjects so be prepared for that. The class wasn't hard and she is always there to help you.
This professor is not the type that wants her students to succeed and learn. She is very set in her own way of thinking and when grading, she is very bias towards what she believes is right. I felt she downgraded my essays because what I said I believed, she did not agree with. She was not willing to see others point of view.
This course is very discussion-based, and most of the time we were discussing readings and/or videos. The topics were all amazing, and laid out in an easy to understand format. You actually have to participate and try, you won't be able to just skim by in this class. Very structured course, I highly recommend Prof. Potter!
This online class wasn't hard just lots of reading. The course material went well with the description. I love the discussions and the topics of learning were very educational. My low score is because I think I would've enjoyed taking this from a different professor.
Required course, avoid this professor. After a while I realized how bad this class is. There's a totally arbitrary "participation" grade that has no rubric. Feedback on essays is terrible. Professor quotes RECENTLY include "Google search genitalia" and "masturbation is good for you". Clearly I don't know what philosophy is if THIS is the focus.
You do a handful of essays for the semester. The system for doing them is great, but there is literally no feedback for points taken off essays or chances to improve. When you are only really geared on a few big things, those points REALLY matter. Avoid this professor if you care about your education
Professor is VERY knowledgeable and passionate about this class. Taking notes is simple, discussions are good, and media required to view outside of class is interesting. Opened my eyes to a lot of topics and helped be become more aware socially. Would recommend if you want a rewarding class!
Love Prof Potter and her Logic course. She somehow dumbed down the process of insanely obscure proofs into a way that most people can learn. She understands how difficult her material is and is super willing to cut slack. YOU MUST COME TO CLASS EVERYTIME! or else you'll be left behind. 3 exams the whole semester, no homework or anything else.
Kelli was a good teacher, and almost everything I learned was new knowledge. However, she is a rather hard grader, so do well on the tests because they will take up majority of your grade. Take lots of notes in class, and write down literally as much as possible, you will thank yourself later.
Kelli is such a fun and interesting teacher who's unafraid to share her thoughts and feelings and is always open to discussing opposing ideas. Whenever I missed a lecture she always let me come in during her office hours where she'd give essentially a personal lecture.
This class was just all over the place. It definitely seemed that she wanted to focus on something that wasn't philosophy. In this class, there was hardly any room for discussion. She essentially lectured at us the entire time and never created a specific time for healthy discussion. She also talked about and showed graphic topics with no warnings.
She greats tests late while doing it at testing center.
Loved this class! It was very interesting, clear lectures with examples and lots of material to read or watch to help you understand better.
