She was new this year but I'm glad I took her class instead of Evans for 10b. Tests are super fair and super easy, basically the same as her homework/lecture problems. quizzes fair too, just get an easy chill gsi for quiz grading a bit lacking in the explaining department, messy handwriting but her fairness makes up for it all :) love her!

Professor Talaska is absolutely wonderful! After heading horror stories about Berkeley math, I was so pleasantly surprised by how amazing she is! Very good lecturer who is clear, I really appreciating her using examples and working through problems step by step. Exams are very fair (just study hw) and go to lecture! Kelli rocks!

Literally the worse professor I've had at cal. Her lectures do not have thorough enough conceptual explanations, and going to lectures became eventually useless so I watched Paulins lectures(which was 200% better). She also doesnt post practice tests, is super sarcastic on piazza, and was just really unapproachable. Just wait take it with Pualin...

Doesnt explain what shes looking for on midterms clearly, its her way or the high way. You can have all the answers correct but lose a ton of points for not explaining it correctly AKA read her mind and explain it the only way she will accept it. Super sarcastic and not at all helpful on Piazza. Only plus is that shes a decent lecturer.

She might be better at teaching 10b (according to some people) but she's terrible with 16B. She's is such a tough/picky grader. 16B shouldn't even be as difficult as she's making it. She's cold, unapproachable, and demeaning to her students AND GSIs. Probably one of the worst and most unreasonable professors I've had.

Horrible grader. Forces you to fail even if you have all the correct answers. I think she forgot that this is a math course for business and economics student that (generally) aren't interested in math. Her rubric is irrational and stupid. I lost more than 30 points for not including units and other trivial things. Avoid her!!!!

Great professor, fair tests. People who complain about the "hard" questions on her final obviously did not go to lecture because they were straight from the lecture slides.... she didn't even change the numbers... xD (i.e., hard questions include final question (from final lecture) and linearity (from first slides of linearity lecture))

She's the worst teacher I have ever had. If she is the only one teaching the class during the semester you wish to take 16B, DON'T TAKE IT. Nothing she teaches/gives you on Webwork is applicable. The exam questions are harder than anything she will give you on any other platform. She's not even qualified enough to be a GSI. Avoid at all costs.

Talaska is a good lecturer given how bad the course itself is. While she did trip up on occasion, her teaching was definitely coherent. She clearly conveyed her expectations for midterms/final. Quiz difficulty varied by GSI, but she said she'd consider these differences when curving for final grades as well. That said, I did have a decent GSI.

She is a very tough grader and can be very picky on small things. However, she makes her expectations clear before the exam, and everything on the exam is covered in class. Some topics may be confusing, but I suggest really reviewing/doing the Webwork problems. The GSI will also be important on how well you do in the class.

While many of these reviews are exaggerated, she is indeed a bad teacher. Her lectures are dry and boring, and she has a very condescending attitude when teaching as well as on Piazza. Her tests aren't very balanced (one midterm was stupidly easy, while another was way too hard). I would avoid her if possible, because she makes an easy class hard.

I think other people have been a bit harsh on Talaska. Her assessments were fair with the exception of explanations. Also keep in mind that this was her first semester teaching 16b, and that contributed to the varying difficulties in midterms. Her final was reasonable and was a midpoint in terms of difficulty. Also on piazza shes pretty funny imo

Talaska is surely a very intelligent person, but her attitude really made the class more difficult. She was very tough and would call people out in lectures for being on their phones, etc. The tests and homework were hard but fair. The lectures did not cover everything. Do not ask questions because she treats you like you are dumb and don't care.

Honestly, WORST teacher ever. She has the most boring lectures and is a very dry person. Every time you ask about the midterms/finals, she'll say "whatever's FAIR GAME." The format and difficulty of her tests CHANGE EVERY TIME. Really annoying. Pick another teacher if you can. 10/10 WOULD NOT RECCOMMEND.

Kelli is incredibly intelligent, but the midterms and final really threw me and most people off. She really doesn't like regrades, and like others have said, she can be condescending at times. Her lectures were oftentimes difficult to follow and the format of her tests and the difficulty of it kept changing.

Dr. Talaska made this class more difficult than it needed be. She had a specific format of section (worksheets), was quite cynical in answering questions, and was overall passive-aggressive. Don't expect her exams to be similar to the past; she changed formatting every time. She's not very open to regrades. Getting 1 SD is not enough to get an A.

While taking this class to fulfil my major requirement, I am disappointed for two reasons. First, there are a lot of webworks and written homework. It is easy to lose points on the written homework because the grading criteria is unclear. Second, the midterm is much harder than regular homework, making it difficult to prepare.

There is a lot of webwork and the written homework is challenging but honestly, it's great that it's there because you get a lot of practice in the process. She can be condescending and she moves through the material fast. But overall, I think she's quite fair in that she lets you know what she expects from you and is reasonable for partial credit.

Really an awful professor. Does not care to help students succeed in her class. If you ask her any kind of question during office hours about what's happening on the midterm/quizzes, she'll respond sarcastically with "whatever's fair game." Told our class that she lost brain cells while grading our test because we did so poorly. Avoid or fail.

Kelli cares more about "correct work" than solving problems. To some extent this is reasonable. Yes, showing work is good, but she has a terribly high bar for correct work that requires you to justify everything and I mean EVERYTHING. Even things that have LITERALLY NOTHING to do with the problem. It is IMPOSSIBLE to predict her grading rubric.

Kelli is merciless- but she is also very accessible online and in person- go to her OH and you will see she is very helpful and even funny. As a math teacher teaching mostly non-math lovers, it is hard to be liked but she keeps the mood light with dry jokes and her cats. Definitely have cried over this class and her work, but she is a good prof.

Honestly came to Cal taking 16A because 1A was filled up, but was glad to take this class. Read her online reviews and was scared as hell, but after taking the final and doing all the homework/quizzes, the class in its entirety wasn't bad at all. Just study and do your best and you can pull away with an A. Kelli was great as well.

Kelli is the worst professor I have ever had. The math in math 16A should not be hard; it is equivalent to AP Calculus AB, but even if you got a 5 in AP calc, you probably won't get an A in her class. She focuses on the little things (ie: stating that FTC 1 applies in a certain problem). Even if you get the right answer you will still lose marks.

Kelli is funny and a great professor. I thought her tests were very fair. She teaches conceptually as opposed to giving you a practice test to memorize so it forces you to really understand the material. The webwork and written work were more difficult than what we went over in lecture but they helped you understand the concepts a lot better.

Kelli is an incredible math professor that truly cares about her student's educational experience. There is lots of homework and difficult exams, but through practice, effort, and reaching out it is not difficult to succeed. Many claim 16A is supposed to be an "easy A" class but I'm glad Kelli challenges us to understand course concepts.

Please don't take this professor if you have the choice. Very unclear grading style, unfair quantity of homework, and will take off points even if you get the correct answer. This teacher taught me the invaluable lesson of always checking Rate My Professor before taking a class and not the other way around.

The professor is extremely insane on grading. She deducts points for silly mistakes or small vocabulary errors like not using the proper math word. She is not very considerate of her students and is very strict. I ended up with a higher grade relative to other students in the class but still very difficult. I do not recommend her at all.

Kelli is a great teacher. She is fair and rewards hard work and an extra effort to understand the concepts. If you show up to class, pay attention, ask questions, and do the HW on time you will succeed. If you do not, you won't succeed. It is really that simple with kelli. She's clear about what she is looking for and is extremely fair in grading.

Avoid this teacher. She is unkind to her students and makes comments such as you untaught me math. Her tests are unreasonably hard, she has lots of homework that wont help with said tests, and her version of math is not computation but word problems, T/F, and other complicated techniques to mix with math.

Kelli is definitely very knowledgeable on the subject matter she teaches and explains concepts quite well. However, when students are unaware of what is going on and ask questions, she can sometimes act slightly condescending towards them. This discourages people from clarifying things. I strongly suggest taking the adjunct to do well in this class

Math 16A/B series is supposed to be a relatively doable math class for students not planning on using advanced math in their careers. I took 16A/B with her for a full year and she made the course far more difficult than it needs to be. You're better off taking the Math 1 series as the professor (Paulin) is far more respectable and fair with grading

Kinda late, but I took 16A and 16B back to back with Kelli. It wasnt fun and I hated every moment of it. One time someone came into lecture and started playing a song on a saxophone, and Id say that was the only enjoyable experience.

Some of the worst lectures I've sat through. She's very bad at time management and would often not finish her lectures by the end of class. She would give vague examples the scratched the surface of the homework and GSI quizzes. Talaska doesn't regulate difficulty evenly among GSI quizzes. Lots of homework and terrible explanations.

Math 16A is the recommended beginners calculus course for many Freshman. Keli makes it WAY TOO DIFFICULT for anyone who has never taken calculus before. My friend had the same knowledge as me, close to none, switched to a different professor & passed w/ an A. SHE IS THE WORST. Her grading is ridiculous & she expects you to mimic her exact style.

Extremely uninspiring lectures taken straight from the textbook with not much valuable content added to assist students. I realized I was better off just reading the textbook myself instead of going to lecture because her lectures are nothing more than summaries of the textbook which (critically) gloss over some important parts.

A lot of people don't like Kelli but she is not bad and is honestly quite funny. This class is a lot of work. She assigns a lot of homework and sometimes doesn't get through all of the material in lecture. HOWEVER, the tests are very fair and nothing too difficult or not covered in lecture is tested. She also gives extra credit.

I took Calc AB and BC in high school so I thought this would be a breeze. I admittedly slacked off a lot but Kelli was an unreasonably difficult professor for the content. Lots of homework (webwork and written work) and tough grading, plus difficult lectures and subpar lectures. I would take any other professor given the option.

Took her for multivariable and boy was it hard. We had two quizzes per week, 3 webworks per week, and one written hw per week. Webworks WILL drive you insane if you don't stay on top of them because they can be quite lengthy. her lectures are focused on algebraic procedure and she WILL glimpse thru important concepts bc she runs out of time, always

One of the absolute worst profs at Cal. Not only is she rude, but is also extremely test-heavy and strives to make her exams as hard as possible. There is no curve either as your exam percentage is your curved score. I only took her was because the other 53 profs class clashed with another class I was taking. Definitely would NEVER recommend

Professor Talaska does a good job covering the difficult topics in this course, but you must attend discussion sections if you hope to pass. You will not learn the material simply by looking at it or hearing it once. The responsibility is on you to do all of the homework she assigns and prepare for weekly quizzes in order to learn the content.

Kelli is not a professor that wants you to fail, but you will have to take advantage of other resources available to you beyond lecture. She is a fair grader and exam writer, so long as you stay on top of the homework and do the practice provided. Attendance is not technically mandatory, but there is a quiz every single discussion section.

Prof Talaska lectures under the assumption that her students read the textbook before class. If you are one of these diligent people, then her lectures are very beneficial, as she covers things in more detail than the book does. However, if you don't read the book before class, then you will be very lost. Also, there are quizzes every discussion.

She goes way too fast in lecture, doesn't leave time for questions, assumes everyone's understanding what she's saying and moves on to the next topic and changes the slide while you're still copying down the question, etc. Tests are hard, involve techniques that were not discussed in lecture. discussions and lectures aren't even synchronized.

Lots of work involved in this class and very important to keep up. Professor can be passive aggressive and condescending. I've found she's much nicer one on one. She is not very understanding either. However there a few extra credit opportunities which is nice and although the tests are graded harshly, the material on it isn't too unfamiliar

Garbage professor. In Lecture, she bombards you with examples in hopes that you understand something. Never times them properly and always runs out of time. Read the text if you want to pass, it helps you understand much better. She is accessible, luckily, if you need to reach out. Quizzes twice a week

Definitely quite a bit of HW with webwork and weekly homeworks, but they all help to understand the material and aren't too tedious. As long as you keep up with the webwork and readings the lectures should help you better understand the material. Exams are fair and similar to homework.

The homework is very heavy and tedious. Exams weren't terrible, but graded harshly. She makes basic calculus pretty difficult so if you've never taken it before its going to be extremely hard. She can be passive aggressive at times but more personable one on one. Does offer EC and quiz retakes which are nice but generally not very understanding.

Very organized and knowledgeable professor. I did learn a lot in her class. If you keep up with Webwork and Problem Sets, she lays out the content very well. She is very strict with deadlines and can show as passive-aggressive but in general very helpful, available, and fair with grading in my experience.

I don't think she's that bad. Exams were tough and tested on concepts rather than computation. LOTS of homework, quite overwhelming. Worst professor I've ever encountered with. She gave out homework on what was taught in the next class, which means students would have to look up how to do it on their own in order to get 100% on the assignment. She left office hours early and did not thoroughly teach the content during lecture. Save yourself a headache and find a different prof.

Actually a nice and accessible professor who puts in a lot of effort and time +beyond for her students and is reasonable with grading and such. Not at all bad as the reviews make her out to be. HW helps with the learning, as long as you put in effort(hw and studying) you'll do fine; people are just mad because calculus is generally a hard subject.

Her HW can be tough and sometimes she doesn't show you how to do it til next lecture, but if you ask for help well before due date, youll be fine. We had 4 EXTENSIVE homework assignments a week and each assignment took hours to do. We also had a quiz every discussion section. I went through a medical issue during the semester and this class was not accommodating to any breaks. Prof lacked ability to recognize people actually take other classes than just this one.

Absolutely horrendous professor. We had at least 1 quiz every week, and the homework is long and arduous. The grading criteria for homework and exams alike are unclear, ambiguous, and ultimately unforgiving. Prof OHs are useless and she s rude and condescending. Quizzes every week, LOTS of homework. Exams were every 2 weeks. She's a great person, just a poor teacher. I had previously taken Calc 1-3 and did pretty well, but she teaches stuff out of order. It's mandatory to read the book before class. Lectures are just examples, no real explanations. She's very strict and likes math done the way she teaches.

Knowing how to solve the questions isn't enough. She teaches a lot on concepts and her multiple choice tests are the reason why I'm most likely going to fail the class. Her lectures are more supplementary of what you have to self learn. She's very picky on how things are done, so getting the right answer isn't enough. Good luck with her class.

It's almost impressive how she's "teaches" over 700 students and accommodates for nearly none of them. Tests are absurdly wordy and feel more like reading tests than math ones. Professor Talaska teaches seemingly easy lectures, answers piazza questions diligently and gives extra credits. But she also gives very difficult/obscure exams that are not only tightly timed but also graded harshly and have almost no curve. Kelli seems like a very nice person, though she sometimes comes off very condescending in office hours. And, doesnt give much flexibility in terms of assignments. Kelli held mandatory lectures that focused entirely on definitions/examples when an entire multiple choice portion of her exam was conceptual. She was indifferent to technical issues and piled on with HW. Exams were ridiculous and as other reviews note, were graded on how well you did a problem HER method. In taking Kelli Talaska's Math16A and Math16B, my eyes were opened to her easily-agitated, unaccommodating and unapproachable disposition. On numerous occasions, she was overheard making snide comments about students' performance and these behaviors were replicated by her GSIs. I strongly advise students against taking her courses.

Half of our semester is graded on stupid true/false sets that are not helpful because she is too lazy to assign actual homework. Power abusive. This was a horrid class. I took Math 16B with Professor Talaska, and she made it unnecessarily difficult. There is no clear grading rubric, and she essentially docks for anything and everything. Very unorganized. Exams are not fairly structured. Professor stopped giving us practice problems online so we had nothing to practice with and never posted textbook solutions like they promised. Final grades were due 2 weeks ago and we still haven't received our grades for this course. She doesn't explain well in lectures, quickly moves onto the next topic, tests are absurdly hard, homework is not helpful. The 10B content is hard too. She does give some generous curves, but what's the point if everyones failing the tests. Take math 1A/1B!

Does she submit grades on time? No. Are the examples in lecture any help for preparing for midterms, quizzes and finals? No. Are the group projects fun and engaging/insightful? Never. Does she cancel class very frequently with short notice? Yup! Does she expect so much out of students only to return 1/100th of the effort? You bet. TAKE THE 1 SERIES

She did her best despite the circumstances given to her. She is pretty strict when it comes to grading, but you just have to know your stuff pretty well. When you ask her something, she will help you understand that concept. The most important thing in my opinion is that you have to have knowledge beforehand to do well in this class.

Class was designed very poorly, lecturer was always sick once a week and didn't teach, but still expected us to know the content, grades tests super late (midterm we took in February was graded a couple months later so we didn't know how well we were doing in the class), she doesn't really explain things that well either. Professor is unable to grade assignments on time, grades harshly, and is dismissive of students. With course content that is new to most students, the amount of work required to secure a good grade is much greater than the 4-unit value. A different professor would be better suited to teach this class and provide students a chance to learn.

DON'T ever take this professor. Her class has no syllabus and she secretly assigns homework by the end of class just because some people left 5 minutes early. Professor Talaska is someone who genuinely wants to help her students, and is having a hard semester exacerbated by the GSI strike. However, this class has been dysfunctional from the beginning. Kelli is consistently disorganized and unreliable, and is currently six weeks behind on releasing quiz scores. Only take if you know already know calc.

It's not 10A's content that's hard - it's Talaska. Aside from being a mediocre lecturer, she lacks transparency and fails spectacularly to uphold her responsibilities as a professor. Our mastery skills/weekly quizzes, modules, and homework have have not been uploaded/graded for more than a month. She lacks empathy and grades super strict.

This class is absolute chaos. The content is not difficult, but Professor Talaska's utter lack of organizational skills and empathy make it difficult. Going into the final, no one knows what their grade is because she is so behind on grading, and it is unclear if assignments will ever be graded. Avoid at all costs.

Never take a class taught by her. The material is not difficult but her system for the class is horrendous. She was so behind in grading which made it so difficult. Its currently break and she still expects you to put in work for the class. I have no idea if I passed because her grading is so bad.

Overall, this class isn't bad if you attend office hours, review lecture notes, and put in the work before assessments. Prof. Talaska's communication can be confusing unless you frequently check for course announcements. Although she changes the grading system, she is pretty fair with grading and allows retake opportunities.

Watching youtube was more efficient for actual teaching than lecture. Use the posted class notes to figure out what formatting she likes (almost just as important to her as understanding the math). Class organization and grading system was confusing and frustrating, and so was her sarcasm and lack of sympathy. Wish I didn't have to take this class.

AVOID THIS CLASS!! The professor is straight-up praying for our downfall. Super unorganized, and never grades tests on time. Because of the strike, she should've been more lenient on the grading. Very nitpicky; if you did the problem right but your explanation is slightly lacking, you get a 0 on the test without a chance to fix your mistakes.

I would advise anyone who is considering taking a class with Professor Talaska to reconsider. Do not take her class. She makes it nearly impossible to succeed. Very, very rarely is she available outside of class (does not stick to office hours) and did not grade finals from fall semester until the beginning of spring. Very unreliable, inconsistent.

I attended almost all office hours that were available (when she didn't cancel them, as she frequently did) and often, when I asked a math related content question, I was greeted with the response: "Go back and look at the lecture." I wish Professor Talaska had even attempted to listen to my questions, or those of other students, but she does not.

Everything is made harder by the professor! She expects all students to show their work in ways that are not often taught/the norm-- it is often the way SHE intuits things, which is often oddly specific. Awful at updating grades, so no one knew what to retake until it was finals. Made us work through winter break!!

Ms Talaska was by far my least favorite math teacher at Berkeley. She had such a horrid grading scheme that whenever I think about how she managed to get it approved I gag a little. In addition, sometimes she was unnecessarily toxic towards students. One time, only after the lecture was over and the students left did she announce the homework.

The class is very unorganized, and we did not even received a syllabus for Spring 2023. It is quite frustrating because she does not communicate with us and refuses to respond to emails; we only use EdDiscussion, and she deletes the comments she does not want to hear. If I could give 0 stars I would. I have never seen such incompetence and lack of respect for students. A syllabus was never given so the class felt particularly unorganized. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES. There is no syllabus, the teacher does not attend class with late notice, and the grading system is very strict and unforgiving. For first-year students take the 1 series instead. It is more work but the stress load is much more manageable.

Talaska is incredibly unreliable as a professor. She constantly screws over students with last minute changes, takes forever to grade, hasn't even posted answers to our quizzes for the last 2 months, and so, so much more. She will start the semester strong, but gradually she will get so much worse. I haven't met a student who doesn't hate her.

I try to be patient and understanding of Dr. Talaska's personal challenges, but it is frustrating. Multiple unfulfilled promises of when to expect our tests to be graded/final grades to be released. No syllabus, cancelled and postponed office hours, poorly planned lectures, and unclear expectations for tests which make up nearly 100% of our grades.

I advise no one to take a class by her EVER! We took the final (to which she showed up late) over two months ago and we still have not received no grades, and she has been radio silent for those months. The fact that the Cal math department had to send out an apology is indicative of Ms. Kelli's competence. After waiting almost 3 months for grades with little updates, no syllabus, and no hope, we received grades that didn't show the smallest amount of leniency. The cutoff for an A was a 95. No emailing is allowed. Any pointed questions: deleted.

There was absolutely NO structure in this class, and what made matters worse was the fact that she basically did not teach the class. I did not get to know my score on ANY assignment or exam until THE DAY BEFORE THE FINAL. She still has not finished grading our stuff for this semester; avoid her if you have the smallest chance to.

Skipped lectures for: "hurt hand, rolled ankle", and sick multiple times in just half of a semester. She has now been removed from teaching for a medical issue it says and another professor has taken over midway through. Only positives were syllabus said: non-cumulative final, test full page cheat sheets, quizzes graded out of 90%, midterm retake.

Kelli is the worst teacher I've ever had at Berkeley. She is late with her midterm grading, she doesn't respond to emails, she doesn't even try and most of all her exams having nothing to do with her teaching because she is too busy talking about her cats instead of lecture material. We don't care. Grade my exam on time. Unresponsive.

Couldn't be bothered to show up to class some days and never posted promised lecture notes or slides. Wasn't clear about class structure and never responded to emails, berated students who came to her OH to ask about this in person. She quit shortly after week 9 and left the GSI's to clean up after her.

Worst professor I've ever had. The class was a mess -- she didn't give out homework nor post lecture notes like she said she would (her excuse for this was a hurt hand). Lectures were terrible. Extremely lazy and uncaring. The course was taken over by another professor who, along with the GSIs, had to clean up the extreme mess she left.

Avoid this class if possible. The professor was frequently absent, didn't provide lecture notes or assignments, and left the GSIs to pick up the pieces. Though the grading system had some perks, the overall experience was very poor. Thankfully, unstuckstudy was a great study aid to prepare for the exams.
