nice lady, hardly go to class and have a B... quizzes and test easy as long as you read over the notes a couple times.
Amazing prof! She really knows her material, and she breaks it down very well to the level of a non-major's understanding. She posts notes on blackboard so you don't have to go to class, although that is when she announces when her quizzes will be. Super easy grader, and as long as you study the notes and powerpoints you will do fine. TAKE HER!!!!!
Excellent teacher. If you go to class and take notes, you will be fine on the quizzes and tests. Attendance isn't mandatory, since all notes are posted online. She is very helpful and a nice person.
She's SO smart, very helpful. I got a C, but I never really went to class. She's really understanding, and makes class interesting. If you went, I'm sure it'd be a GPA boost and an easy Miami plan
Really good teacher. Her notes are to the point with nothing more and nothing less. She is somewhat monotone, but she at least knows what she is talking about. I would recommend her to anyone.
Dr. Abshire is an amazing professor- a very nice person to talk to as well. She really wants you to understand the material and will adjust her teaching style if it seems like the class isn't getting it. She doesn't try to trick you with the wording of her test and quiz questions; you always know what she's asking. Definitely take her!
Dr. Abshire is the only one out of herself, Pennock, and Skelensky. She is very helpful and approachable outside of class. She does not try to trick you on tests and is generally very fair with her questions. I would not take her with the other two, but she is definitely worth taking in a class where she is the only one teaching!
I wish Dr. Abshire taught this whole course! She was so clear in lecture and her powerpoints were easy to understand. She gets to the point and her test questions are very straightforward. Highly recommend that you take her class if you can!
Fantastic professor - I have learned so much about microbiology from her, and she explains concepts clearly and concisely - my content knowledge has soared thanks to her, and her powerpoints are flawless - really cares and wants students to succeed - interactive videos and simulations of DNA/RNA topics...worksheeets, online quizzes- def RECOMMENDED
Outstanding course, outstanding professor. I looked forward to class every day. Class discussions were fun and engaging.
Best class ever! I always looked forward to going to class. Minimal textbook use, and an awesome lecturer. Very approachable. I would not hesitate to take another course with Dr. Abshire.
Great professor! Abshire is very good at knowing what to teach you without getting too in depth for an entry-level class. I definitely recommend taking MBI 121. All the notes are on blackboard so you don't have to show up, but she rewards you if you do. Also, don't buy the book, you don't use it at all. A great MP course to take. I pulled a B+
EASY!!!! didn't go to class and got an A.
I hated this class. She posts slides on blackboard, but the material doesn't seem to match up with what's on the exams. We wrote at least one paper and had a presentation, both on which I got A's, but it didn't seem to matter because the quizzes and exams killed my grade. Not recommended if you're not a science major.
This class was the best! Dr. Abshire posted slides on blackboard and taught you exactly what you needed to know. If you go to EVERY class, listen to her, do the work, and actually try, you'll do fine. Quizzes are online and open note, midterm + final and papers wil constitute your grade. One of the best classes I've taken!
A pretty interesting class that involved a lot of group work. If you put in the work you will get a good grade. Kelly Abshire is a great professor. I highly recommend!
Easy class and a good teacher. She is an easy grader. My group got perfect scores on all of the assignments which were very easy. I didn't go to many of the lectures and didn't study a whole lot and I still got an A-. A lot of the stuff taught is common sense but you still learn some cool stuff. Take this class
Very easy sprint course and a very nice professor. The group work was a little rough but our group got perfect scores on everything. It was hard to really get to know Abshire because it was a lecture class but she seems to know what she is talking about and is really nice.
PLEASE TAKE HER
She was really good teacher, also very understanding. Class is easy do readings, pay attention in class, and really you don't even have to take notes. Midterm and Final exam is the bulk of your grade. Quizzes are open book and you can take them twice she takes your best grade. Take this class!
Abshire is a really good professor and mbi 131 is a pretty easy class.
She is a great teacher! and not to mention, really nice and willing to work with you. If you show interest in the class and do your work she will be really helpful. You should attend class though.. She can tell who goes and who doesnt
Nothing but a rehash of MBI111. This was the most ridiculous class I've taken at MU so far. The professor talks down to her students as if they were her 12-year-old children. She has a bias to her interpretation to epidemiology. She uses statistics from 5+ years ago! She already has a 300-level class of this type! Unintersting professor!
I have zero interest in MBI but this class was super easy. You get the opportunity for a lot of extra credit and the exams are straight from the notes that she creates. You don't even need to go to class to get an A. She's really chill too.
Class was super easy. There's a lot of group work so even if you don't do so hot on exams you can still get a decent grade. Dr. Abshire is really nice/helpful and tries to make her powerpoints as interesting as possible. She posts all of them online too so there really is no need to go to class outside of group work days. Would def recommend.
Abshire is such a great teacher- the class is fairly easy because she makes her own notes and slideshows for the students to study from which is extremely helpful. She explains everything very clearly and the only time attendance is mandatory is on fridays for activities. I hated MBI before this class- now i love it & i am going into nursing.
Attendance is not mandatory except for activities on friday, but I went to her class everyday. Study notes for the exam. Three to four questions come from her lectures and videos. I got A :D
It was a really easy class. She makes it seem like it will be extremely difficult at first. The midterm is easy, the final not so much.
Very straightforward. Doesn't speak in fancy language. This is a Miami Plan course so she understands not everyone in there is going to be a micro major. Exams are pretty hard but in class assignments and weekly quizzzes make up for it !
She is very nice and very clear in what she wants. The tests can be difficult if you dont study much. Easy miami plan class.
She was very clear and straight forward with everything. I really liked her and signed up for another class with her next semester. Attendance isn't mandatory except for when there is an in class assignment. She posts all the notes online, but sometimes she will give extra credit for attendance. I would definitely recommend taking her!
Kelly makes the class straightforward and easy to understand. Attendance is not mandatory, but sometimes she gives extra credit for being in class. Only a midterm and final and then online quizzes and group activities. Pretty easy Miami plan class if you actually study a little before the tests!
Go to class and re-read the power points she puts online and you should do well. I liked her, she was pretty cool but her voice was so monotone. It always put me to sleep lol. Overall, it was a good class and pretty easy too, just make sure you study.
Take her class! She's awesome
She is a great professor. She really knows what she is talking about and is willing to help. The class itself was VERY interesting. I highly recommend her!
One of the best classes I've taken at Miami. There is lots of interesting discussion, and Dr. Abshire connects well with students. With a decent effort, you will have no problem being successful. Take this class!
She lectures from powerpoints, which she posts online, so you don't really have to go to class. Weekly online quiz that you get 3 tries to do (highest grade accepted). Weekly 1 page assignment that's pretty easy. I got an A from studying the powerpoints and didn't go to class much. Definitely a GPA booster. Take her!
I can see how this class could be difficult if you have a bad teacher, so I'm very thankful I had Abshire. She's very clear about what's expected of you, when things are due, and all her policies and preferences. She's impressively good at explaining complex biological processes. I personally loved her class, it was fascinating. Would recommend!!
Abshire is really chill. She is very good at explaining the material. Class is actually pretty interesting. Exams are a little tuff, but you can boost your grade with the quizzes and homework. Never opened the textbook. Just looked at powerpoints
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Abshire teaches clearly and makes the material easy to understand. Grades are based on online quizzes, 5 short written assignments (which are graded mostly as completion it seems like), a longer written assignment, a group presentation and exams, which are tougher but manageable. I'd definitely take it if ur premed.
Very good professor. Would not take again. There is a ridiculous amount of studying and memorization needed to do well in this class. Would not take for Miami plan.
Dr. Abshire's lectures are long, and at times a bit boring. However, she is a very good teacher and I really enjoyed her class overall. It is not a hard class as long as you put in the effort, but the exams can come back to haunt you. There was a lot of memorization involved. She generally takes attendance for extra credit only.
Professor Abshire is a fantastic teacher. I'm not too interested in science but she always makes her lectures very interesting. She assigns online quizzes and short papers, which weren't too bad. Exams are tough and based on memorization. Attendance is used for extra credit. She truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed.
She is very nice and the course is mostly made up of straightforward and short assignments, but the tests are hard and difficult to study for. Attendance isn't mandatory and this is definitely one of the easier science classes at Miami
Dr. Abshire is super nice and really knows her material. Every class is a lecture of the powerpoints she posts on canvas. Occasionally there are group projects and CTA's, both of which you must be in class for to get the credit. Exams are pretty challenging tho, you really need to have good memorization skills. Not an easy A, but I recommend her!
Dr. Abshire was one of the best professors I have ever had. Her MBI class is interesting and even though she uses powerpoint her lectures are not boring. She' s super chill and it was an easy A if you showed up for class and took decent notes on the lecture. I recommend printing out the powerpoint before class and taking notes directly on the slide
if you like eating raw white bread, you will love this class (Abshire is very bland and monotone, but is super easy, and will give u good grades on everything)
She really sets you up to succeed. If you do all the required work, study for 2 hours for each exam, easy A. Weekly online quizzes that you get 3 chances for, a few small easy papers, one small group project. I highly recommend going to class, especially on Fridays where she likes to give extra credit for attending. I actually learned a lot.
Originally thought she was a good professor throughout most of the year. However she doesn't curve anything and her tests are way more difficult than it should be for an entry biology course. grade is pretty much based on your tests. take someone else, she isnt worth the trouble
Science isn't my thing, and with Abshire she made it possible to not only get an A but learn the material. Take the time to fully learn/memorize the PowerPoints, review the quiz questions, and skim the chapters she tells you to. If you say on top of the work, it's such a do-able Miami plan bio with a great prof
Great professor.
Kelly is such a great professor. Her lectures are monotone but she is funny and the course material is really interesting/ she makes it relevant to college students. A couple group projects but they are little work and easy A's. Exams aren't hard if you study, also very easy class to skip, but not if you do it really often.
I loved Abshire's class, however, you definitely get out of it what you're willing to put into it. The online textbook is very helpful and offers practice quizzes to help learn the information. There is also extra credit points you can earn by being in class on certain days. Her lectures can be long but pay attention: they help on exams.
Only have to go to class on Fridays bc there are 10 point assignments every week. They are always easy if you do them you'll get 10/10. But she does pass around a clipboard randomly for extra credit points for attending and those help ALOTHowever, you do need to study for tests but as long as you go over the Powerpoints a few times you'll be fine.
This is a great Miami Plan class because you literally just have to show up to pass. Honestly attendance is only extra credit and the PowerPoints are online so you don't even really have to come. She has a very dry voice and sense of humor, but she explains everything SO well. Lots of grade boosters in homework points
Professor Abshire is amazing, she finds a way to make boring topics interesting, I actually enjoyed going to her lectures. For tests as long as you go through the PowerPoints a day or two before the exams you'll be fine. She also gives a lot of opportunities for extra points through attendance and easy assignments and online quizzes.
Took this class for my Miami plan requirement. You don't have to pay much attention in lectures, but I'd suggest going to all classes since she gives extra points on exams for attendance on certain days. Not much work at all. Just prepare well for the exams from the PowerPoints and do the homework (minimal) on time and you should be fine for an A.
Dr. Abshire does a good job of lecturing the material in a clear, interesting way. There are only four exams and they are a bit challenging, but if you study the powerpoints and make sure you understand all of the material on the study guides that she puts on canvas than you will be fine. I would definitely recommend taking this class with her.
Great and funny professor, I'm not a big science person and she made it so interesting. I really enjoyed having her as a professor and would recommend her to anyone.
This has by far been my favorite class at Miami and it's all thanks to Abshire. She is an amazing prof who makes her class interesting due to the relevance of the issues she talks about. Gives you a true appreciation for the topic. Clear about grading and rubrics. TAKE THIS CLASS AND TAKE IT WITH HER! I recommend this class and her to everyone!
The tests are the hardest part of the class. The writing assignments are graded easily because all she wants to see is that you tried. The material is super interesting and Dr. Abshire does a great job of teaching us it. The book is helpful for the open note quizzes.
She teaches the material in an interesting way, and is very fair. The topics were pretty interesting. Tests aren't the easiest but if you study a lot then you'll do fine, everything else in the class is graded very easily. If you do well in the tests then you should get an A in the class.
Abshire was a good teacher and MBI 131 is a great class to take for Miami plan credit. As long as you do homework (which is light), read the textbook before a test, and study you'll get an A
Love Abshire. Her class is pertaining to the real world and interesting. The class is pretty easy, a lot of memorization. All straight from her lectures and power points. there are some papers but they are not hard and are short. if you show up to class and listen you will do just fine in the class. highly recommend
Abshire posts all of her lectures online, however she offers extra credit in class on random days so it is important to show up and pay attention. The exams are difficult but if you study a decent amount you should do fine.
Great class for those who aren't that in to science! Easy to pass if you use her study guides before the exams. There isn't a cumulative final and she gives extra credit if you attend the class before Thanksgiving Break. Just turn things in on time, use the study guides, and don't plagiarize and this class is an easy A.
Great professor! I learned a lot of important information that I will remember the rest of my life. I studied for over 20 hours before each exam, but it paid off. I highly recommend her class!
Professor Abshire is a real gem. Absolutely the most enjoyable science professor I've ever had. Take notes from her lecture slides because that is your study guide for the exam. Definitely choose her for the Miami plan.
I ADORE Abshire. She is genuinely a great woman. Sometimes her lectures can get boring, but she throws in group activities throughout the sem that makes things interesting. Tests can be hard but you have things that can bring your grade up.
Professor Abshire is overall a nice woman but her class was definitely one of the hardest I've ever taken. This class is lecture heavy and your grade depends on 4 tests, a bunch of open note quizzes, and group projects. The tests cover a ton of content and seem near impossible. This class for certain did not feel like a level one bio class.
Overall I really enjoyed Professor Abshire. Lectures can get a little boring but she give you the powerpoints. She definitely knows the material and cares about our learning. The tests can be very detailed oriented so you want to make sure to know everything in the powerpoints. There are lots of opportunities for easy extra credit.
Dr. Abshire is a very caring professor that knows her stuff. She's student focused and willing to help you out whenever you need her to. The main things you need to know about her class is that exams are impossibly difficult. Make sure you study every little thing she posts on Canvas and have a good understanding of the material.
Same boring lecture every class. The course material was difficult, especially when test averages were around 60% all semester.
I took this course to fulfill a credit for the Miami Plan and let me tell you, it was the hardest course I'm taking. If you are looking for an "Easy A", this is not the class for you. This course requires an absurd amount of studying and knowledge for someone who doesn't care about PreMed content.
I am not good at science but Professor Abshire was a very fair grader and wants you to succeed. There is a lot of material but it can be easy to interpret. Lecture notes are very helpful, and she gives several extra credit opportunities. Group mini-projects help significantly with boosting your grade. Get to know people in the class, it will help.
Her lectures were incredibly hard to sit through, so make sure you chew gum or bring water with you, or else you will fall asleep. She drops your lowest quiz grades, which ends up lowering your overall grade which is annoying. The course is also WAY TOO INVOLVED for a Miami Plan class. Overly harsh for no reason when students ask a question too.
Abshire was not very accessible via email, and when she did respond she was very rude. The exams either tested your ability to memorize the minutia or tested math comprehension. The lectures were boring and she reads off slides. Do not take if you can avoid!!
Professor Abshire is not kind and her tests are extremely hard and nothing like the review she gives you. If you do anything wrong she will yell at you.
Would not recommend, tests are impossible not matter how much you pay attention and study and not the most helpful
Dr. Abshire has a good sense of humor and makes delivering a pretty dry topic pretty fun. The book assignments are a total annoyance but if you are somewhat interested in epidemiology and you need a Miami plan credit this is a great class for you.
Her lecture slides that she just reads off of and the reviews posted before the exams are absolutely nothing like material covered on the exams. No matter how hard I studied I always felt like I was missing something and never passed an exam. When the class average for exams were around 60% it is clearly a her problem and not our fault. DO NOT TAKE
This class is difficult and requires a lot of studying before the tests. The tests are on material covered during class though.Dr.Abshire is interesting and cares about the subject she is teaching. She gave out 30 total points of extra credit to make up for the hard tests. Hard class, good professor no need to take for Miami plan if not interested.
The assignments outside of tests were weighted extremely low so it was heavily based on tests. I didn't have a good experience in her class as there was nothing knew to learn in class outside of the lecture slides. Class consisted of reading off the slides and taking quizzes on our own time that were often not on the lecture material.
Tests were extremely hard and barely consisted of lecture material. There was nothing to learn in class and the lectures were extremely boring.
Her exams aren't even related to the lecture slides - shes a horrible professor with a bad attitude, she also doesn't give out many extra credit opportunities either. If you're a business major you're better off taking another course.
Dr. Abshire is an awesome professor! Lectures were very interesting, there were options for extra credit, and she was very responsive and kind. I always enjoyed going to this class because of how well organized and intriguing the content was. Exams can be a little tricky, but as long as you do all the reading (and go to class) you will do great.
Shes very rude and unkind. Her exams are nothing like the slides, and it's based on your ability to memorize an entire book. She never answered my emails and had a bad attitude when she was teaching. Avoid if you can, she yells at you for every little thing you do.
Dr. Abshire is very kind and a fair grader. You take 4 exams in this class (the final is non-cumulative), and she provides many extra credit opportunities. She is very knowledgeable in her field, and shes also funny. I love her, she knows her stuff. Please take this class!
Dr. Abshire is incredibly knowledgeable about epi and her lectures are fascinating and very clearly explained! She has a wealth of experience so she knows what topics trip up students and spends extra time. I didn't want to take this class but ended up looking forward to it and considering changing my major. Quick and thoughtful grader!
It is obvious that Professor Abshire has a passion for teaching and the content, she was always asking if people had questions and gave thorough answers. The content went through was difficult but expected for any biology class.
Such an amazing professor.
Abshire had very boring and unhelpful lectures. This was a tough class and I did not think that the exams tested my knowledge of the material well. Avoid if you can for Epi!!
Cake walk if you just do the HW and study a little for the exams
Super caring teacher who obviously cares about what she is teaching and her students. Enjoyed her lectures, she made them entertaining and funny while very educational. As a non-STEM major, this class was a lot of just studying terms, but overall, I really enjoyed this class.
Although she is super nice, the class is awful. Do not take this if it is for a miami plan credit. The exams are tough and very in depth. I took the class because I had to fill a requirement and thought that human diseases might be interesting, but it is super tedious and hard if you dislike science. The McGraw Hill homework assignments take HOURS.
I loved Professor Abshire, she cared a lot about her students and it showed. The course is very lecture heavy, but there's not too much homework and she grades those pretty easy. There's 4 exams, non-cumulative, and those are what got me. They are pretty hard, but only 1/3 of your overall grade so you can still do good in the class.
This class is not as easy as people make it seem; however, if you took any previous biology class it is a carbon copy of many ecological, health, and microbiota topics covered in high school. Dr Abshire, is very sweet and although I did not meet with her after class she made it very easy to approach if need be. No reason not to take her. Honestly.
SO KNOWLEDGABLE! She is amazing but this class is a bit intense if you don't have any interest in MBI111. However, if you are interested this class is so cool, it has become my favorite class! You definitely have to study for the 4 exams but she does give a super in depth study guide for every exam.
Lectures are mostly her reading off the slides, and she doesn't talk about the reading. The exams have some questions about the reading material, but they are not too hard. There are in-class group activities about 1 or 2 times a month. Good to take if you want an easy credit, but only if you're interested in public health or biology.
Dr. Abshire is so nice but her lectures are very dry. She has attendance at first but that stops, lots of chances for bonus points towards the end of the semester. The exams cover a lot of material so start studying early in advance.
Honestly the tests were harder than they needed to be especially for a Miami Plan class. They covered a lot of material and went in depth. I wouldn't recommend.
Dr.Abshire gave amazing lectures which I found fascinating; there's a decent amount of homework including lecture reviews, essays, topic reviews, and videos varying from 2-3 assignments a week; there's plenty of group work including assignments and projects; and the testing can be difficult.
I found her lectures to be very engaging as she always tied in broader context to make scientific concepts more relevant. As a non-STEM major I had no problem understanding the material. Exams were a little tricky, but if you attend class and take notes it's light work. She's also very willing to connect with students and help as possible.
Simple class, attendance not necessary, study lecture slides for exams. I studied 1.5 hours before each exam and ended the class with an A. Lectures are a bit boring but they're easy to understand, she has a monotone voice, encourages participation and questions. Good amount of group work, team podcast project at end of semester. Good teacher.
