Took this class during fall and had to drop it. All of the homework is online. She says there's not a lot of homework, but there are anywhere from 30-50 questions and each questions has multiple parts. She goes off on a tangent a lot so if math is already confusing don't take her. With a PhD is math, she acts like math is easy, but not 4 everyone
For someone like me who has a difficult time with math, Professor Aceves is a godsend. She will take time to go over concepts that you're struggling with, and will do what she can to help you learn how to understand a difficult concept. She doesn't make you feel bad for not knowing something; she's very supportive, and her grading is fair.
Took Aceves for 060 and she was fantastic! She is very enthusiastic in lectures, you can tell she puts a lot of effort into her lecture content, as they were organized and very easy to understand. She's also pretty forgiving with tests, adopts the policy of dropping your lowest test grades if you do well on the final, which is great.
Took her for both 060070! She's a wonderful professor. Yes, she gives a decent amount of homework (all online) but it only helps you understand the material better in the end. She will do everything she can to help you understand something if you don't! Not the BEST in math but got an A, so it is possible to pass!
This teacher keeps getting off topic repeatedly its very hard to follow her lectures she keeps telling crazy comments about her family. I never had a teacher who likes to hold you back .She never tries to help if you ask a simple question during a test she always says I cant help you. She doest care how much you work on your online homework.
Good professor. Homework is all online, but it helps you understand the material better. The course itself is hard, but if you study hard, do all your homework, attend her office hours, you should pass. She does get off topic only when people are writing slow. She is funny and very approachable. If you ask for help she will help you.
Doctor Aceves was amazing. The lectures: pretty simple but long, took her for 3 hour night sessions twice a week. The homework: All online for spring semester. Used a program called Aleks. I didn't find it helpful, but tedious. The tests: Challenging. Aceves, with a doctorate in math, was not so forgiving but the final replaced lowest test score.
I absolutely loved Mrs. Aceves' class. She is engaging and understanding, and quite funny I might add. There was a LOT of online homework so make sure you don't procrastinate on it. The tests are hard but if you go to office hours it will boost your confidence and your grade. Overall, a wonderful, entertaining professor.
The best math teacher!! When it comes to math you HAVE to be prepared to put the time and affort into it.. Go to her office hours, ask questions! If you sit in the back confused, don't do the homework, and never ask questions, you will fail. If you put the time into this class, you will pass! Trust i failed this class 2 times, just put the work in!
Tests are hard and very different from homework. Textbook not needed just access code for online homework. Tough grader. She went off topic for hours a week speaking about herself and family but couldn't find the time to review tests, homework, and examples. If you want to pass don't take her class more than half did not pass.
Hands down one of the best math teachers I've ever had. She is super clear when it comes to lectures, and strives for her class to succeed. Attendance is mandatory and she makes it very clear with in class participation. She also made it known that if you make anyone feel uncomfortable in class, you'd be kicked out. Super funny, just put in effort.
This teacher is not very good. She gets off topic quickly and explains things that are not necessary. For example, she spent twenty minutes of our fifty minute class explaining a method that she DIDN'T want us to use. Also, her homework deviates from what she taught in class. Has a hard time focusing on the material putting us many lessons behind.
Is in poor health-doesn't sleep a lot and has frequent doctor visits. Causes lots of error to occur as a realist of this. Literally handed a test back a MONTH after taken. Gets off topic way too easily and wastes most of our class. Online homework that is terrible and doesn't support learning-super easy to cheat on, makes my guessing skills PRO.
Would like literally never ever take her again. She is like totally not clear about anything she talks about. Then she's like always sick and says she only like sleeps 3 hours a night, if that. Like totally not ideal. I do not want a teacher who sleeps less than I do. Only plus that's also a negative-she's funny and gets distracted easily.
The class was very confusing because she would get side tracked very easily to the point where were are weeks behind. She is always in poor health, leading to frequent doctor visits and substitutes. The homework was online and was terrible. I would not help at all and would be different from the actual class. Tests are very difficult and unclear.
I would highly not recommend her. She makes math harder than it is supposed to be and boasts that over 50% of her class fails. There is a good reason why-- she gets side tracked, we are about 2 weeks behind schedule, and she takes forever to grade your test. She also has a lot of health issues and blames the students for being behind. Poor teaching
She gets off topic so often during class that by the end I feel as though I have learned nothing. She is in poor health and complains that she has 3 hours of sleep a night. Although she doesn't sleep she has taken up to a month to return our tests. SUPER BAD TEACHER, NEVER EVER EVER TAKE HER. If you do you will wish you hadn't.
She is a nice person, but she is way to specific about certain details on the test! She marked a question wrong on my test because it wasn't done correctly, but i got the correct answer regardless and i did most of the problem right!
she's a nice person and constantly reminds you that she is. if you don't do something HER way, she'll mark it wrong. her tests are very hard, she barely curves, and it's horrible. She's confusing, doesn't clarify and you can barely get time to see her during office hours. she gets off topic way too much and then isn't specific about the test.
Nice a person, but goes off on tangents way too much. She falls behind and then blames the class, very cut-throat with time (there's never enough of it) and is not good at explaining things. Tests are moderately difficult. Takes forever to return exams. Homework is all online and very unrelatable to lectures. Would't really recommend her.
This professor assumes everyone knows math as well as she does. She's TOO brief and is easily distracted, causing her to talk nonsense instead. Her teaching style is VERY strange as well. I had to learn from the textbook and/or ask my friends. It took her a very long time to return ANY test, and she makes up bad excuses to cover. Just dont take her
Take a long time in returning exams, but it was because of her health issues and other work, she didn't only have one class. Her exams weren't that difficult either, the stuff we did in class was harder. She did mark you down sometimes for some ridiculous stuff IMO. She does expect you to understand stuff because, come on, you have to if you're...
At this level of math, and if you didn't she would explain it as best she could, if you still didn't understand not everything is up to her, you have to put effort into learning the material. Overall she's an incredible person and teacher, and doesn't deserve all of the hate people are saying, she cares for her students and wants them to succeed.
Worst math teacher at COC. Tests on material not taught and not present in the book. Ridiculously nit picky about how your work is shown. Talks about tangents not related to subject material like World of Warcraft. Slow to return assignments, if they are ever returned at all. Always has personal drama and excuses for why things are late. AVOID!!!
Not the best teacher to be completely honest. She tends to go off on a tangent about her personal life a lot and wastes class time getting too caught up with other conversations she may have with students. The tests are difficult just because of the fact that she is a picky grader so the smallest mistakes WILL affect you. DO NOT recommend.
Dr Aceves was great! She really doesn't deserve all of the negative feedback. Although she'd talk about unrelated things frequently, it was only before class, or when people were still taking notes and she was giving them time to write. This class is incredibly difficult if you don't pay attention or ask questions. She's funny and wants you to pass
For me this was just a personality issue but she often goes off topic and does not keep to the lecture. I always knew the tests would be returned 2 weeks after we took them because she takes FOREVER TO GRADE THEM. Her tests are not that hard in a sense, but she grades with rubric so if you make small mistakes there is no way you are getting credit.
Very kind lady, just annoying how she frequently goes off topic and talks about video games or about her weekend. And I cannot stress how picky she is on grading tests! You can do a problem perfectly but get it wrong because you did not use a method that was taught in class. Also does take an extremely long time returning exams.
Gives lots of homework online. However, she is the only Math professor I have had who is willing to gave her all to her students. She does her best to ensure that you understand the material but you must actually put an effort in learning the material and GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! Seriously, go. It will be the best decision you make for your grade.
Highly recommend her. I had her for two courses and passed them with flying colors! She is caring and genuinely wants to help you any way she can, though she does go on tangents often. She offers convenient office hours; GO to them if you are struggling.
She assigns a lot of HW and arguably doesn't even look at it. Her lectures are practically worthless when it comes to HW and tests. Her tests aren't necessarily hard she is just a very strict grader and will look through all of your work. My biggest issue with her is how slow she is at grading the tests, she is a nice person but her excuses get old
Overall a really fun professor. Aceves really cares for her students and wants everyone to pass. Though the material is really difficult and challenging even with studying. But if you study you should pass. She is a really fun professor though. Best math professor hands down.
She's an extremely active teacher. She goes at your pace and she works hard to make sure you can get to her if you need to. She's really patient both in and outside of class if you're having trouble. And! She's not condescending when you ask for help. Make sure you see her after class if you're having troubles. It's so so worth it!
She was a sub for my precalc class and I really didn't like her. I heard her talking to a student from her full time class and she told him she was glad 40% of her students passed the last test. She wastes so much time getting distracted by literally anything. Glad she's not my teacher, and I wouldn't take her myself.
Professor Aceves is very sweet and cares about her students. She is a tough grader, but her lectures are very clear to understand. She assigns a lot of online homework. She provides study guides for her exams which are straight forward and similar to the questions that are on her exams. It takes her a while to grade and give back exams.
Like many other reviews, I would NOT recommend Professor Aceves to students. She gets distracted many times, and lectures that could be taught in 1 class may take more than that. I could only recommend taking this course to students that already know most of Math-104.
I took her class a while ago for Precalculus and I seriously don't know why everyone is so bad on her. She is an excellent professor and tests are very similar to lecture problems. Honestly as long as you study and do homework, you'll pass. Yeah she may go off topic sometimes, but she still covers all material.
Get ready to work and not treated like a child! Her lectures are on point, if you have questions she is always ready to help you out! Yes there is a lot of home work, yes you will have to study; but if you need her assistance she will always make the time! She is blunt and to the point, very approachable and beyond knowledgeable!
Terrible professor, needs to learn how to teach. She misses too many classes. Not clear on material being taught, too prideful in students failing. Does not care for success of students in her class. Beware!
Super funny and sweet person, great class and she is very willing to explain anything someone needs help with. Great office hours!
Dr. Aceves is an amazing professor. No the class is not easy and it does take time and effort, but thats exactly what college is. She really cares about all her Students! Shell try to help you in any way possible. Her study guides are great and the homework really prepares you for the exams. If you do everything she assigns you will pass.
lectures are clear and easy to follow, pay attention because she emphasizes what'll be on the test, know the study guide like the back of your hand and you'll get an A on the test, re-do the online hw until you get 100% on them (if you have the time) it's good practice, don't be afraid to ask questions. only flaw is that she's a slow grader
She has a lot of homework and it's not posted on time. When she teaches she tries to do shortcuts then to actually take her time. She talks a lot about herself. She is very detailed about what she wants on the test. Her tests are hard and her reviews are insanely long. Her finals are pretty easy.
She outlines her grading criteria very specifically and will explain concepts in a very detailed manner. Helpful if you ask questions and put in the effort to see her during office hours. Not clear about grades, and could only give us "estimates" of our current grades. Random and long tangents during lecture.
Professor Aceves was by far the best I have encountered. She is very polite and time literally fly's by. There is never a moment wasted in class the lecture were always very clear. She is also a great person to talk tot and get to know outside of class with some amazing stories.
Prof. Aceves is not the best professor. She is not so bad at teaching a certain subject, however when she gets distracted we lose 15-30 minutes of class because she talks about other things about her. I am not there to listen to her talk about only sleeping 2 hours a night. A bad professor that is proud about people failing her Calc class.
Prof. Aceves is a really nice lady and is always welcoming to her students. Just pay attention to her lectures and ask questions. Lectures are clear and engaging. Taking her 6:45am class was risky, but I always had motivation to go. I had her during the COVID-19 transition to online, which is definitely the main reason I didn't pass, not her fault.
She is really funny and energetic. Loves math and very knowledgeable. But the class overall is not really good and kinda hard to pass. bc she doesn't have enough experience teaching calc 2 and she gets lost a lot during the semester, most of the times we were behind. Tests are OK but you have to self study a lot .
Her calc class is hard but doable. the only reason she is rated so low is because she doesn't offer any partial credit and she also doesn't round up grades. This is the first professor i've had at coc that doesn't round grades from an 89.5 and above to an A. overall, calc 2 is already hard, but she makes it harder.
Get ready to teach yourself. Dr. Aceves posts videos before the sections demonstrating how to do the homework. She only presents 2-4 examples from the book. There are no opportunities to work out her problems; the presentations are prerecorded. She also releases the chapter exam the day the last sections are due.
You have to be ready to teach yourself the material and there is a lot of homework. She doesn't round up, gives no extracredit, or retakes on any exams. We had her asynchronous and she never really gave us credit even if the computer messed up something. Never responded to emails directed towards finals. A very frustrating teacher to work with.
I am an AOC student, I was scared about this class. But, Aceves is an alright teacher, sometimes she is a little off-topic but as long as you study hard (do practice problems and study notes) and make sure that you really know your material for tests, you should do well and get a high mark (A). She is not always the best explainer for math though.
Wish could make a longer review, but in short Calc II online was very hard. Aceves is very easygoing and does her best to help students which I appreciate. Utilize office hours, calc II is not easy, TLC tutors are hit or miss. Tests are fair, just study hard and try not to panic. Would not recommend taking Calc II online, daily Calc II is better.
This teacher was truly awful. If you want to actually learn from someone who cares do not take this professor.
Professors expectations for this class is beyond insane. Took Pre-Calc as my first math class, hybrid too. Class only meets once a week, which I thought it would be okay, nope. She expects us to know 8 chapters worth of material each week and wishes us luck for the exam which covers roughly 30 chapters worth of material. Absolutely insane.
you'll use MyMathLab cost $97, with quizzes for each section, four exams covering 4-6 chapters each exam, and a final exam. Avoid the hybrid class; it's tough. Good luck, especially if math is challenging for you and make sure you memorize definitions and formulas cause there are no cheat sheets or calulators.
Aceves seems like a nice person but her class is horrible. I am currently taking her hybrid Pre-Calc class and it's unbearable. She doesn't seem to care that more than half the class failed the last test. Her class is the first class I am scared of failing as I have been a straight-A student for years. It is impossible to learn everything.
Dr. Aceves is a nice person and she is funny at times however I do not like her teaching style at all. It is super confusing. I don't get her lectures and she assigns a lot of homework that is harder than the tests (like a lot of hw). No matter what I did I failed the tests. I was so confused, that I didn't even know what question to ask her.
Never again 90% of the class dropped out. Do yourself a favor and don't take her.
Would not reccomend taking Pre-Calc hybrid with this proffessor as majority of my class has failed every test yet she doesn't care to help her students that are clearly struggling. She also has a really confusing way of teaching!
I DO NOT recommend taking her class in Hybrid or online. It is extremely difficult to grasp the concepts solely by the videos that we have to watch, I had to teach myself most of the concepts again. Grades tests late, doesn't prioritize her students and one class period a week in person is not enough to fully understand the concept.
I'm an AOC student, and I'm just going to be honest do not take the Hybrid version. The homework is so much harder than the actual lessons. And she is an EXTREMELY tough grader, sometimes she would let some mistakes fly, but the majority of the time she doesn't. The Majority of my class dropped out (roughly around half the class) by the third exam.
Aceves is truly the worst professor I have ever had. Her grading "criteria" makes it impossible to make a mistake without getting the whole question wrong. She's also a TERRIBLE explainer. For lectures, she reads straight from the textbook and thinks explaining means reading slowly. I have never felt like I was working against my teacher until her.
Being honest here if you struggle with math do not take her you have to be super confident in your math skills or studying skills because you will not pass, she does not give partial credit so if you make one mistake that's it for example if you do not understand 3 questions on the test that's already a D, go to another school (for math)-my advice
Dr. Aceves is a very nice lady, but she was not an amazing teacher. The lectures were directly ripped from the textbook, and I was often confused with her explanations. I had to learn a lot outside of class, and I had a tutor. She also seemed to brag about her low passing rate for her classes and tests. Just be prepared to learn a lot on your own.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! Prof Aceves is nice enough, but she doesn't teach anything. She shows very basic examples in her lecture and speeds through the material. This is a teach-it-yourself class. There are 4 homework assignments per week, each has 150+ problems. 75% of the class failed the first 2 exams and she blamed it on us. STAY AWAY!!
Proffesor was not understanding and not patient and does not listen to students
Professor Aceves's class was not as bad as I heard from others. However, her lectures weren't the best, so I found myself having to do some learning outside of class. My main complaint is the multiple choice part of her exams: nothing on there really reflects what you learned in class. Plus you get no partial credit for them, so be mindful of that!
She is absolutely awful! The first day of class she said that she fails a lot of her students and then later in the semester said she loves her job. She will yap and yap in lecture before actually working on the problem. I went to tutoring for help and even the tutors asked why I was taking her. Pick any other professor.
She adds irrelevant problems on reviews that done appear on the test. Homework can be extremely difficult and long—she admits to some of them being trick questions. No extra credit. 15% is Homework, and the rest is the test. If you manage your time, you can pass. If you have trouble with time management, don't take it. She is very kind, though.
AOC student here. I took lecture Precalc last semester and Aceves is really chill. If you come into this class with basic knowledge of algebra and trig it should go well. She is really good at answering questions and gives generous partial credit. Her tests are just stuff pulled from the reviews. Don't get it twisted, this class is great
She teacher isn't good. I'm not kidding, the teacher said the class before we got class average of 44% on the first test. And she said that was the easiest out of the 3. Take Precalc with support, it's easier I heard. But stay away if you don't want to make a big mistake. Fast-paced, note heavy, and at least 1-2hrs of homework daily. Stay AWAY!
As long as you pay attention, you'll do fine in this class. I had it hybrid, so the class worksheets and the lecture videos were helpful. The study guides don't limit what the test might focus on, so I would recommend studying beyond them, or even asking someone who has taken the class for help. Aceves is a good person & teacher, but harsh grader.
For all AOC students! please do not take her! literally only take her if she's the last option you have. Myself, among many others, have only gotten one B, and it's in her class. She has a few positives, but the cons outweigh those cons heavily. Her reviews are like 15-20 PAGES long and her tests don't reflect the review. grading is so WACK! AVOID!
This class is time consuming and challenging to take especially if you struggle with Math. Lectures are useless overall and you are better off just teaching yourself the material. Exam reviews ironically do not prepare you at all for upcoming exams. Aceves is kind but her teaching is not the best, you're better off with someone else if you can.
Acevez is really nice but her class caused me so much stress. Before every class period I hoped that the building would collapse and I would die so that I didn't have to go to class. Do not take this class if you are easily stressed because you will develop suicidal tendencies.
Dr. Aceves is a great person, but not a great teacher. Very kind and understanding. Lectures were tedious, while not having much substance; learned a lot on my own. Tests were confusing, with a lot of weirdly-worded questions. Often talked about the low passing rates for her class with pride. Seemed to be constantly stressed. I hope she's alright.
BEST COC math professor I have taken. Calc 2 is not an easy class. However, Professor Aceves does everything she can to make the class as easy as possible without sacrificing actually learning the subject. This prof really does care for her students - she gives lots of partial credit too! AOC, just PUT THE WORK IN and trust me you will be fine.
I absolutely loved having Mrs. Asceves this semester. She is one of the nicest teachers I have had at this school, and I don't know why so many other students complain. If you work hard and treat her with the same respect she gives us the school year will run better than smooth. Loved having her class, made me feel so safe and welcome.
I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews for Prof A. I took Lee's class, and I dropped it after finding out how much homework he assigned, so I decided to register for Prof A's class the next semester. She's very clear about expectations, exams have no surprise problems, and homework's manageable. I'd recommend taking her if you can.
To give the benefit of the doubt, this was a hybrid class. I took AP Calc B/C, got a 5, counselor put me in this class (idk), and I dropped the class with a 62%. 5ish lecture videos, which are 1-2 hours every week, along with 4 homework assignments 1 hourish each. Quizzes every 2 weeks. Nobody was above a 75%. Just take a diff prof its not worth.
Had to add on to the review below. You're basically going to have to teach yourself/watch other lectures because the ones she provides make 0 sense. She's nice, but it's not worth it if you're going to have to drop/end with a bad grade. Just save yourself the hassle and take a different professor, or honestly, just switch to a business major.
she's got a great personality but really can't teach. Her class was basically just self teaching and the material on the tests were completely different from what we learned. For a college course that you PAID for, she makes attendance mandatory and marks you down in points if you're late/ absent. Mind you, this is college not highschool
This honestly has been the best teacher I have taken at COC so far. This teacher is very straight forward and extremely helpful. She will not ask obsurd overly tricky problems on tests to decieve students. The tests are still hard bc Calc 2 is hard but she is extremely fair and helpful.I would give more information but I am hitting the letter count.
Genuinely sounded proud when mentioning how many people drop her class. Lowk evil. So much online hw you have to pay 100+$ to even access first of all. 60-120 homework problems per week. 6 page reviews and the test will be completely different. Over half the class dropped midway and I did as well, save ur time and money w a dif professor
horrible. you can read the other reviews if you want more details, just know that only take her if this is literally your last resort. no other reason you should ever take her.
Generally good advice to drop a class if a teacher boasts about how half the class drops, how the average score for a test was ~50% and how no student managed to get an A on the midterm. She said usually 8 people max will get an A in her class, just take an easier professor who explains concepts clearer with hw covering all topics in lectures.
In general a hybrid math class that meets at 8 am is very tough, I think she is a good teacher and lowkirkuienly i was a bum.
