Without a doubt, one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He does not follow the book, gives out handouts that are suppose to be good practice for the test but aren't. We were scheduled to have 3 tests and a final but he could only fit in 2 so he made our final 60% of our final grade! I would not suggest him unless you are good with numbers!
Kelly is a very laidback professor, but is very enthusiastic about statistics, which lets face isnt all that interesting. He offers help sessions on the weekends which are very, very helpful. He curves the grades, so don't worry if you didnt do too well. He's very nice and tries to learn everyones names.

excellent teacher, offers plenty of help outside of class
One of the few professors that truly cares for his students advancement in the class. He really wants you to do well.He even gives you his cell number to call him whenever you need assistance. Presents the material effectively and will go over the material until the students get it. Does not take attendance but success lies in going to class.
love this teacher. He is so dedicated that he spend sat and sun w/ us.
Mr. Alvey is not the best teacher, but he is good. He explains everything, but I just don't think it was thorough enough for me. And the test were CRAZY. However, he has a good curve on the grades. Won't recommend him but if you have no choice, you'll be fine.
1 of the best teachers I've had He truely cares about his students & wants them to do well His grading scale is definately in favor of the students where an 87 is an A Alot people ive talked to have struggled on his tests but i did fine with about 3 hours of studying He gives lots of handouts & review problems if you wanna do well gotta go to class
He is an excellent teacher. He goes over problems very thoroughly in class, and has extra help sessions for anyone who needs them. His exam problems are just like the homework problems, so as long as you go to class and do the homework you'll do great.
This guy is awesome and totally dedicated to his students!
Mr. Alvey is awesome. He is always available via cell phone, he has office hours and study sessions at least three days a week. He explains everything in simple, non-pretentious terms and is fully willing to work with you if you are willing to try. This is a rough course and he is a great teacher. Work with your schedule to take him.
This is the best professor at ODU. He gives optional weekend study sessions where HE brings the coffee and donuts!!! This dude is the best teacher ever, he really wants you to learn.
Great teacher. Highly recommended by me. Tries to make everything as simple as possible. Has study sessions on the weekends.
This is a nice man but a horrible professor. I don't think there was a harder way for him to teach the information. I think you could have understood it more if you read the book and didn't go to class. He curves the tests a lot because he has to or almost everybody wouldn't pass. If you have a choice DONT TAKE HIM
This a good professor and probably the best one available who teaches DSCI. His tests are difficult but if you go to his study sessions and do the homework everyday you'll do fine. His office hours are also very helpful so try and go when you have questions.
3 exams and a cumulative final. The class average is like a 55. He scales a lot tho. He makes his tests tricky. He does not know how to teach students in a simple manner. He is very confusing and will never write down answers. It's hard to learn from him. He's never straightforward. His tests are all open ended problems. Do not take him!
Easier than 206...great prof. though, offers weekend study sessions. Curves well.
By far the best prof. I've had at ODU. Very intelligent and competent teacher. Very helpful and expains the material well. Provides help sessions during the weekends which are extremely beneficial to the student. Would definitely recommend to others.
Best ODU teacher ever!!! his exams are quite challenging, but he is really dedicated to his students, patient, and explanations are crystal-clear. Study sessions on weekend.
OK, This class was ok for some. I hated it, Alvey was not as organized and tests were made to trick you. If averages are in the 50's there is something wrong.
Very frustrating class. He will go over many problems in class leaving you feeling confident about the exam. Then you take the exam and the class average is a 50. Avoid taking him if you can.
Best teacher at ODU!!! So awesome, will make sure you understand everything before moving on. Uses real life examples for everything. People complain about the average grade, but come on we are still talking about statistics and he curves like 30 points on EVERY exam!!! He is awesome.
Great professor, very hard tests but the class is hard in itself. Definetly take.
I think Kelly is the greatest thing to happen to DSCI 306 at ODU, and believe me as I have taken this before!! Tests are challeging but he reviews well and offers weekend sessions where he brings donuts. Also he curves tremendously and is very nice...definitely recommend to anyone looking for advice on a good dsci teacher.
Simply the best teacher you'll ever have at ODU. His tests are not easy, but if you study his handouts and come to every class, you can have an A for sure. And he curves like crazy.
Okay- The material is REALLY hard! He understands it is hard and tries to make it easier. I agree that his exams are REALLY REALLY hard but he does grade on a MAJOR curve. Take advantage of the Saturday help sessions. I would have failed this class if I didn't go on Saturdays/Sundays
He is the best professor at ODU. He shows you how to dissect a problem. This is a hard course but he made it easy. Just make sure you go to all help sessions.
Had him for 206 and 306, extremely hard exams, but a good professor. Holds weekly Saturday reviews because the class is so tough.
I honestly can't do the man justice with words. I was so scared of DSCI before, but he makes it so easy that I almost switched majors! As evidence see that his classes filled in the first day of registration while everyone else still had room 2 weeks later. If I were a large university I'd try to steal him from ODU.
Prof. Alvey is one of the greatest teachers I've come across. The class is tough, but he makes sure there are enough options for everyone to do well. Leniet grading scale! If you aren't getting decent grades, there's something wrong with you because I find this class difficult and pulled through with a B. GO TO THE SATURDAY/SUNDAY SESSIONS!
The most awesome professor at ODU!! The class is difficult; however, he gives you all the resources you need to suceed. Moreover, he wants every student to suceed.
Extremely helpful professor. He takes the time to make sure you understand the material. He holds help sessions on the weekends for extra help with the material. I would recommend going. He makes the material fun and relates to the real world. Hard course with any other professor. One of the most helpful professors at ODU
He's a really teacher. I had an A in 206 with another teacher and learned more in Alveys class on the subject in 2 weeks. His tests are hard to separate who knows the material, but go to class and use every helpful resource he gives and you'll do well.... he's def a steal for ODU to have him
THE BEST PROFESSOR ever. Statistics is not an easy subject but Alvey makes it very understanding and helpful. IF you keep up with the homework and go to his review sessions on saturdays or sundays you should be good. He is an amazing professor and is always ready to help his students. Take him if you can.
Kelly is an extremely helpful instructor that is always available to his students and makes a difficult subject easier to comprehend. He uses his tests, inconjunction with class participation and the student?s overall mprovement to determine final grade. I would recommend taking 306 immediately following 206 to get the most out of his teaching.
Terrible professor. Expects you to know everything and the exams are very challenging!!
He is one of the best professors at ODU. Professor Alvey is extremely helpful, knowledgeable and is concerned that students understand the material. He provides extra help on weekends (I would suggest to go there; do your homework before, so you can get the most out of it). There are 3 exams and a comprehensive final. Take him if you get a chance!
GREAT professor! He wants you to know the material and will make sure you get it. He's makes himself available to you and holds weekend study sessions. Definitely take him if you get the chance!
Alvey is a great teacher. He is more than willing to help his students out he comes in nearly every other weekend for help sessions that are extremely beneficial for tests. His tests are structured like his handouts so it is best to focus on those. He teaches you what you need to know and makes class fun. TAKE HIM for DSCI 206 and 306!
Overall, a great professor; however, his tests are very difficult. I suggest you do the homework problems over and over to get the material down. He has test curves for each exam, as well as weekend sessions. I got a C and I am quite happy with that.
He was clear and the tests were not hard as long as you included all your work.
He is one of the best teachers I've had in my life. He is so helpful. He gives you his cell number so you can call if you ever need help. The subject is hard, but I called him every time I was studying and he was happy to help. Tests are hard, but he gives you everything you need to pass, and he curves the tests like crazy.
AMAZING teacher to a hard class. He makes sure that everyone understands and holds review sessions in and out of class. Curves the test grade, comprehensive final, but between homework and practice exams, lots of study is required. He's easy but don't expect to fly throught the class. Attendance not mandatory.
Kelly is an AMAZING teacher and funny too, gives great examples and is overall the BEST math teacher I ever had. I'd take his classes again if I needed to go further with Decision Sciences. Show up for class, participate, and do some study at home, you'll be fine. TAKE THIS TEACHER IF YOU CAN!!!!
Yes! Yes! Yes! I made it through. I'm not the "sharpest took in the shed" ... but I'm very pleased (and thankful) for my C. Without Kelly's help there's no way I would have even pulled the C off. He's extremely helpful and an amazing professor.Highly recommend. Stats was/is difficult for me but he truly made it more understandable. Thank you Kelly!
Probably the best professor to take for this class. If you do the homework problems repeatedly until you get them, you shouldn't have much of a problem scoring well on his tests. In addition, the curves that he gives on his tests are outrageous! TAKE HIM!
AWESOME!
Kelly is a must for anyone needing this course. He walks you through the material at your speed. He gives you at least 3 great options for help if you need it. The material is hard if you're not a DSCI major so you want someone like Alvey teaching you. TAKE HIM!!!
if you have to take stats 206/306, you have to take it with this professor. he is hands down the best. he takes calls at all hours for questions on the homework. good personality and very friendly. if you do the homework you will do well on the tests. take this guy.
TAKE HIM!!! You will so NOT regret it. He takes the time to go over everything you need to know to pass this class. He has help sessions on the weekends and brings snacks!! Tests are curved like crazy. You don't have to be math wiz or a genious to do well in his classes. Do the homework, go to the help sessions & you will do fine plus you'll learn!
Best of the best in odu. Take him.
I'm a senior marketing major and he is still the best teacher I've ever had at ODU. He's incredibly helpful and the friendliest guy you'll ever meet. I'm terrible with statistics but he made everything crystal clear!
This dude is the truth! Go to class and do the homework. He does everything but give you a copy of the test. The man even does help sesssions on the weekends before the test. The only way you will have a hard time in this class is if you don't show up and make no attempt at the homework.
GO TO CLASS!! It is not mandatory but you will be sorry if you don't go. He explains everything in detail and makes sure you know the information. He has help sessions on the weekends before tests, gives you his phone number if you need help with any homework. Very helpful. DO THE HOMEWORK! Curved Tests. Great Teacher
Best teacher I've had at ODU!!!
Alvey is EXTREMELY helpful!! but his class is NOT easy! Its a difficult subject and hard to understand. Dont take him if you think youre going to get an easy A bc that is not the case what so ever!
Best teacher ever. Period. His class was not easy but he gives you as much help as he can and is EXTREMELY lenient when it comes to grading.
The class is pretty hard and you move through a lot of material fairly quickly. Professor Alvey is super helpful and will do all he can to make sure you understand. If you put in effort, you will do fine.
Kelly is a great teacher. The material in his class is NOT easy to understand. He is always available to help if you need it, even does study sessions on the weekends. If you try you will get a good grade.
AWESOME!!!! He is so helpful, this man rocks! This class is incredibly difficult but he will have your back as long as you put forth an effort. Go to all his Study Sessions, Call him, email him, all the connections because he will rememeber you!
EXTREMELY helpful! The BEST professor at ODU! Take him for sure!
Great teacher. Really loves the subject. Highly recommend taking him for any BNAL class offered at ODU.
Kelly is the best professor I've had at ODU so far. Whatever they are paying him it isn't enough. He makes the class interesting and easier to understand. Highly recommend this guy
Best Professor at ODU. Had him for both DSCI 306 and BNAL 407. He is extremely helpful willing to spend as much time with you to have you understand the material. Funny guy and overall great person. Also truly an active knowledge professional in his field. Highly recommend him. He's also personable and prefers to be called by first name Kelly!
The best professor I had at ODU so far. He will help you with any problem or question you have. He will spend time during weekend to have help sessions to prerare you for the exam. It is a hard subject but you can't find a better professor to teach it. Take him if you want to have fun and enjoy the class. Has a very good sence of humor
Mr. Alvey is a great professor. He really tries to help you understand and really tries to be available to help. HE CURVES ALL EXAMS! My only gripes are I wish he didn't hold his study sessions at 8am on Sundays, and I wish he would've been a little speedier with posting our final grades.
Good educator. Even more interesting is his alternate dancing career while at Indiana university
Great teacher, makes the material covered in class enjoyable and interesting. Curves the exams. Attendance, homework, and participation are not mandatory. I earned an A, but it wasn't easy. If your taking 206 or 306 I highly suggest him.
Does a great job getting past all the statistical theory gobbledygook and explaining how statistics is actually used in the workplace. Class focus is heavily on using software to get answers, then analyzing and interpreting computer output. Exams are hard but fair! Saturday study sessions really help prepare for the exams (and he brings donuts!)
Alvey is the man! I didn't do any of the homework and managed Cs on the first two tests. Alvey is there for you. He answers your questions through phone calls all the time. I never asked for help. I was supposed to get a C in this class, but my friend and I got serious and crammed for the final. We got 100s and managed a B+ and me an A-. Do the HW!
Kelly was a great teacher. One of the most enjoyable classes I have taken at ODU to date. Do the practice problems, chances are you will see a lot of the same questions on the test. Be sure to ask questions, he is always ready to help.
Kelly Alvey is my favorite professor at ODU. He really loves the subject and it shows. He is ALWAYS available to help. Don't miss his study sessions because they are critical. Do the homework and pay attention. It is basically on you to pass the class because he gives you every opportunity. I would recommend him to anyone. TAKE HIM!
To pass this class you need to actually show up. You MUST go to test reviews on the weekends. The review sessions will save your grade. The test are hard but there are curves to his tests to balance things. Overall it is up to you to pass because he does whatever he can to help you.
You will only enjoy the class if you understand business analytics. He is very unclear about a lot of things. And his lectures are very confusing. He goes over notes and problems but I never really was able to understand what he was talking about. He curves very well. I should have gotten an F but he curved me to a C.
Classes don't feel like they drag on. He doesn't try to complicate the subject. As long as you put away the distractions he feeds the information to you in a very easy way to understand. You need to do the homework and pay attention-- PRACTICE. Its not a class where memorization is going to cut it. He's a great teacher.
so prof. Kelly is a very nice guy, however he is not very clear and only goes over problem once and very fast thereafter you have to figure it out on your own. i do not recommend taking him, I've realized calculous i seasier than probability
Amazing teacher! He has a few tests; each with a few problems. Tests come nearly straight from the "optional" homework and study guides. If you don't do the homework, then you won't pass. He is willing to help if you put in the work. Even has weekend study sessions before the test and open office policy. Hilarious.
This professor makes analytics so much easier to handle. He's funny, and knows what he's doing. If you take Bnal 306, TAKE HIM.
I took BNAL 406 with him (Wish he still taught 407). It's a relatively difficult course you must do the math labs (could take several hours), but you walk out knowing a great deal about Excel. Willing to help students/Great professor
The class was extremely difficult and requires a lot studying. For the first exam, got a 55%. But I ended up with a B, because he curves well. The weekend help sessions are a must, unfortunately. He didn't always explain topics well in class. Pay attention to his discussion of POM/QM & Minitab. You will need this at the end.
Wasn't as hard as I expected it to be. You'll learn useful Excel features and functions. Homework assignments are on MyMathLab. Practice assignments can be tedious so use the book as guidance to do the actual assignment that are due. 2 longer Excel assignments outside of MyMathLab. He'll give you test bank questions for Midterm & Final.
Professor Alvey is easily one of the best professor at ODU. I took both 406 and 407 with him in the same semester. 407 is more challenging than 406 but Alvey will give you a good grade if you try. I personally find him very easy. He cancel a lot of classes but I still feel like I got my money worth. He is the reason why I am majoring in BNAL.
I had Kelly for 306, 406, and 407. Best teacher I've had in any college class. Teaches what you will actually use in life and not a whole bunch of stuff that you probably won't use. Didn't use the book at all and got an A in all 3 classes. It isn't given to you, you must show you understand the concepts.
You get back how much you put in. This class is pretty much self-taught. He shows you what to do, and you're on your own. The only thing graded are tests. I would suggest doing hw as practice for the tests. Test are all fair game, no study guides provided. Just practice power pivot and DAX! Cannot stress it enough.
Awesome professor (I decided to double major in Business Analytics because of him). While the textbook isn't necessary, it is useful for certain chapters. Course consists of 3 exams, a final, and a project worth 3% your grade. My only word of advice: Show up to class, attend Alvey's exam reviews, and attend the PASS sessions.
Kelly (that's what he goes by) is a great guy, and seems to love this class. Nobody will have a problem passing this class if you try, but you will get out of it what you put in. You'll work in an expansion to Excel, but Kelly is still learning it too. He's excited about it, and if you're serious about becoming an analyst you'll be excited too!
He is an awesome teacher. He got me actually interested in the material. The class is difficult but he throughly explains it . I went to all his exam reviews before the exams and they helped tremendously. You do have to study the material and practice.
Professor Alvey is the GOAT. He has 3 tests and a final and that's it for grades. Good size curve on all tests (he recognizes this material is VERY challenging). I'm a BNAL major and I am already signed up to take 406 and 407 next semester with him. He hosts test review session before tests. DISCLAIMER: You will actually have to study and prepare:)
Prof Alvey is an amazing professor. Chose BNAL as a minor because of him. Don't bother with the books unless you really want them, everything is taught in class. He explains everything you just need to do the homework and pay attention. He doesn't test anything he didn't show you in class. Please study and do the HW its not that hard. We
I double majored in Business Analytics thanks to Alvey. The material can be challenging but all you really need to is practice and keep up with him in class. Alvey is always willing to help. Open to questions, friendly, actually cares about his students. Definitely my favorite professor at ODU, and my favorite subject matter.
TAKE HIM. All you need to do is sign up for his class. You will not regret it. Best Professor I've ever had. Ever!
The toughest class so far, I absolutely love it though. My rough start hurt me. Don't sign up if you can't give it 100%. You won't regret it. This is a useful class, great for any degree. Lectures are so exciting and interesting. I want to take it again. Kelly Alvey loves his work and students, no doubt. Fun class.
One of the best professors that I've had - took him for BNAL 306, 406, and 407. He is also available during his office hours to go over any questions/concerns and is very passionate about business analytics.
Awesome teacher. Deep subject. I feel like I could take this a second time and still not absorb it all. Great teacher. Care about students and subject.
Its a hard subject. I didn't use my textbooks or do the home works and did well in the class. Could have done better if I had. Class averages for exams are low but he understands that and the curves always work out in our favor. Slow grader but don't rush him he seriously looks out
Hands down one of the best professors at ODU I have ever had. I honestly would get a minor in analytics if I wasn't graduating in May. Genuinely cares for his students and does so much to help you succeed. Makes the content practical and interesting. If you pick him, you will not regret it.
You wont like this class, enjoy this class, or understand this class. The class is really difficult and Alvey understands that, his curve is massive, if you got a 40 on a test, it was considered a C, so it possible to get a good grade. Takes FOREVER to grade though, waited nervously for 8 days for the final grade to be posted.
