Awful teacher, didn't teach us anything, impossible grader.
She's a really great professor. She is a fair grader. She is not for the lazy students. I learned a lot from her and hope to take her again.
This teacher likes to play favorites. If you get on her good side from the beginning, which is rare, she will grade you well, but if you don't, Don't come crying to me about your grade.
She lays out information which she wants you to know neatly and steers class discussion in the direction she wants for the test.
She a pretty nice lady but man she rips your papers apart-BEWARE! I thought I was a good writer and struggled to get A's. I thought she was too tough on her grading.
This is quite possibly the worst teacher i have ever had. I was upset by the fact that i had to pay money to take her course. Not only did she waist my time every day we had class, but was also the most unhelpful teacher i have ever had. Do not take.
grades very inconsistantly
This teacher was the absolute worst. If brains were gasoline this teacher wouldn't be able to power an ants motorcycle around the circumference of a penny. But on a serious note she resembled Miss ****gy.
Oink oink Miss ****gy. Kelly Austin is the WORST teacher I have ever had in my life, even my 2nd grade music teacher does not compare. I can't believe I actually paid money for her class, and you should never take her class or you will rue the day alway
the subject matter was already boring, and she made it worse. feminist who definitely favored the girls in teh class...
She is nice but EXTREMELY hard grader. If she allows you to rewrite the paper, do it! It usually gives you at least a grade higher.
She is very sporadic when it comes to grading. She always jumps on papers for being to broad, but then hates when one discusses specific messages the author is conveying. Her questions in discussions are very simple and makes assignments seem easier then she will actually grade.
If you enjoy pulling out your hair for what is supposed to be an easy 101 class, take Austin. Her grading is so inconsistent and irrational you'll want to kill yourself. She'll make stuff up about what she wanted AFTER you get your paper back
se dcoesnt know how to grade and is extremely boring. a very nice woman but very inconsistnet. she talks way too much and you never use the textbook
hard grader
She s very nice, but a very very VERY hard grader. You nevere use the text book, and classes are very boring! essays are grades really hard and ther are journals due at midnight the class before
This class is a lot of reading & writing, so if you like to read you'll enjoy it. For the in class part, it was mostly discussion about the stories. Everything seems to be going fine and she seems nice enough until you try to get an A. It's hard to figure out what she wants from you to get an A or even a B. She a very hard grader.
Great teacher! Really nice and helpful, is a hard grader but HELLO its college... and gives plenty of opportunities to talk to her to improve before papers are due. Overall its a fun class, not another boring lecture.
I beleive that Kelly is a great teacher and a great person who really will try to help you if she can, and she will bend her rules a bit if the reason is reasonable. Thanks alot for all the help.
Great Teacher. her class is pretty easy. if you show up to class then you will do pretty well. she is very helpful but you need to ask for the help. overall, i would recommend this class.
Kelly is a meticulous grader. But, she is not unreasonable. Having a good writing foundation is necessary for this class. It is not easy, but she tells you up front that it isn't. Don't have the "easy A" expectation. She's generally very helpful with questions. You are in charge of your grade in that class. If you have the rewrite option, take it!
A very fun and understanding teacher. Yes, she seems to be a hard grader, but if you are a good writer, you will be rewarded. Very, very, very willing to help and very easy to talk to. Go to her office hours, and put in effort. Would recommend
I liked Kelly for the most part. The class is a lot of work and she's going to make you earn your grade. I ended with an A but I wrote every journal and fixed every paper that she handed back. Yes....she let's you fix your papers. It's nice! You also get extra credit. I would take this class over again if I could. Made me a stronger writer.
At first she is hard will Grade your papers very strict but you eventually learn what shes looking for and the last 3 writing assignments are easy enough to get A's she lets you correct your papers and she does dish out the Extra credit.
She thought I was a boozer. Man whats up with that! She is a good teacher and makes English fun!
This teacher rocked my world!!!! She has been one of the most in depth and interesting teachers I have had at my many years at Xavier. She always helps and she loves when you make inappropriate comments in class. Always interupt her and you will get an A+. She loves long drawn out sentences and all the contemporary HOT issues. Take her,She is Great
The second class i Had was the same as the first a little bit louder and a little bit worst... haha not really go KELLY!!!
Coming into this class, I wasn't used to having my papers graded so harshly. Coming into this class, I couldn't have imagined how much it would help.
Kelly Austin officially is the best Xavier Professor I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. If you talk a lot and make her laugh you will establish a good rapport with her. You can establish such a relationship that she will see you in the mall and write you e-mail even after she's had you. Dear Lord, KELLY AUSTIN is the ipidimy of AWESOME!!
Contrary to what others have said, I think she's a fair, consistent grader. She is tough (getting a solid A is near impossible), but she's willing to edit rough drafts and cranks out a lot of extra credit. Interesting reading material and class discussions, especially with the journals. Helped make my writing even better. Friendly woman, too.
Kelly is one of the most personal and good-hearted teachers I've ever had. Really takes an interest in not only academics but will help if you just need a good talk. Hard work but worth it she will push you to limits you didn't think you could reach. GREAT class, highly recommend.
Can I just take a moment to say how AMAZING this woman is?? She's possibly the best professor I've ever had. EVER. Bravo, Kelly. Bravo. Keep on keepin' on. If you don't take her class, you're makin' a mistake!
I loved having Kelly as a teacher. She is a hard grader, don't expect As in the course. However she has already taught me so much about writing well and makes you want to become a great writer. I would defiantly recommend her to others
GREAT GREAT GREAT teacher extremely helpful when writing papers, easy to contact, very nice. Recomend to everyone!!!
Kelly is SUCH an amazing teacher. Most of the homework consists of papers (not difficult) and journals (easy as well!) Very helpful and kind. Not too difficult of a grader. No tests or quizzes. She even lets you finger paint and gives you colorful stickers to stick on your papers. Very enjoyable class, take it if you have the option!
TAKE HER CLASSES!! She is such a great teacher. I learned so much from her and her instruction improved my writing tremendously. She is definitely not an unfair grader, she just knows bull when she reads it! Oh and make sure to do the reading she assigns, she almost always talks about it in class.
Kelly is a fantastic teacher. She does a great job of being your friend while still keeping authority in the classroom. I feel like I can talk to her about anything, and she's extremely helpful on papers. Take her for Rhetoric! You learn about writing but also about a subculture you're not familiar with. Take this! You won't regret it. :)
Forced to spend a semester stalking a group and writing a portfolio of essays that Kelly would tear apart with meaningless critiques, this class was a useless pain. Always got the same grade so no point in trying! Classes=pointless but attendance was required. Definitely writing for the teacher here, and she's no more than a literate baboon. HATE.
Kelly Austin is an extremely nice and funny woman. However, her ENG 115 is a strange fieldworking class disguised as Rhetoric class. She tells you the first day of class that she never gives As. Grades more on content than on writing ability. The class is tedious, repetitive, and thus mandatory. Avoid unless you love abnormal, informal writing.
RED FLAG DO NOT TAKE!!! Her classes are long, boring, and pointless, but yet she requires attendance as part of your grade. She grades extremely hard on papers and gives no reason why. According to her, good papers are c's, great papers are b's, and a's rarely exist. 2 out of the 4 papers she didnt give out a single A. Also takes forever to grade.
Personally, I loved Kelly. She was funny and her class was never boring. She isn't an easy grader but if you actually try you should do okay. She is always available for help outside of class and is very approachable. Take her.
Horrible class. She was never clear what she wanted from each of the papers (she wants you to ignore all you learned about writing) and asking for help is useless. You will actually HAVE to BS some parts of your papers to get a passing grade, you'd be surprised how easily you can get screwed over through no fault of your own.
Absolutely terrible teacher, homework was far more than what needs to be for an intro English course
the people who complain about kelly either suck at writing or just didn't want to put in the work. i got an A in the class by making an effort and listening to her suggestions.
She is so nice and likes to make class enjoyable, but she is very picky when it comes to grading. You should definitely go to her during office hours and use the writing center. I really liked this class!
I enjoyed her class. I don't know that I came away from the class a better writer but she made it enjoyable to be in her class. She seemed to personally care about her students and she listened.
Professor Kelly was a wonderful teacher, she was really helpful and offered extended office hours to look over your papers before you turn them in. Her classes had bland days, but other days it didn't feel like a lecture at all, rather a discussion. I really enjoyed being her student. She is a tricky grader, no exams, not tests.
Professor Austin was a very nice and energetic teacher! I really enjoyed being in her class, I had it at 8:30 and still managed to like it! I usually do not participate but with Mrs. Austin's class, she made it easier and comfortable for students to say when they felt about the topic. I would definitely take her again!
Very nice person overall. Class was at 8:30 and she kept class interesting with a lot of in-class discussions. A lot of work with journals and quizzes plus reading. Her grading is incredibly hard, picky yet, generally unclear.
Good prof., helpful with writing issues, open to new interpretations of works. If you are an effective writer/rhetorician you should be okay arguing your points. Participation in class discussion is practically mandatory.
Although I like her as a person, I do not like Kelly as a teacher. Basically tells you day one that unless you are a god, you won't get an A. Lots of writing and pointless homework.
Kelly is a saint. I love her to death. She is a very tough paper grader, but she really does make you a better writer. Going to her conferences for paper help is essentially a must (often a 1-2 letter grade bump). It isn't the easiest Rhetoric class out there, but it is definitely the most fun. Definitely take her!
I loved this class. She is a tough grader. However, professors should not be giving out A's. You have to earn your grade and you learn a lot from this class. She helps you to become a better writer. If you work hard, it'll pay off at the end of the semester.
Difficult grader, but really cares about her students and making them better writers. Always made class enjoyable and fun, and she was always willing to make time to meet to talk about a paper or assignment. I would recommend her for rhetoric!
Kelly is willing to help anyone. She makes her classroom super fun and I never dread going to class. However, she does assign homework often. It isn't hard, but it is not fun. She is such a nice lady and definitely go to her office hours! tough grader and a little slow at grading, but she is a great teacher. One of the best English professors at X!
The class is discussion based and revolves around the novel assigned for class. She is definitely a fun teacher and wants you to understand but she is a difficult grader when it comes to papers.
Great professor buy extremely picky and tough grader. Takes forever to give back papers and comments are somewhat helpful. Gives great comments on rough draft but generally not the best. You stare at a culture all semester and if this culture doesn't talk, you'll be screwed in the class. If you take her, good luck.
New paper every week. Her examples online were not very helpful for me. She is picky at everything you write and her comments took long to give back and were confusing. Class is boring if you don't say a word. Overall, the long term assignment gets boring and it is the same thing every week. No tests at all which was nice.
Kelly was one of the best English professors I've ever had at Xavier she's laid back enough where you can joke around a little in class but still make sure you do the readings and participate a little. Also if you go to her office hours she'll tell you exactly what you need to do to make it an AA- paper.
Great teacher, read the spark notes show up, and you will get an easy A
Kelly Austin was such a blessing to have during my college career. I really learned how to write well and be confident in my writing. GO to office hours, she will work miracles for you. You may have to work hard but you feel so accomplished after her class. A great person to be very friendly with during class and to turn to when you need help.
Kelly is absolutely wonderful! She does everything she can to make class fun and really helps everyone get their projects completed to the best of their ability. She does expect a lot of participation, so be eager to discuss and answer questions.
LOVED THIS CLASS! As a First Year Seminar I really got lucky with this one. I mean, she taught a class on YouTube! She is the kindest person. As a seminar class it was a lot of participation so be ready to speak! I highly recommend this class to anyone!
Kelly Austin was not a favorite. If you are not creative or a janeite, then you're screwed. For a first year seminar class, I would expect it to be less tough, but this is all wrong. Never take reading the web. She is an english teacher so she'll assign a paper (take 2 months to grade it) and you end up failing it even though its a YouTube class.
Her class is really boring, in addition to being really hard. She's a nice woman who wants to help, but her grading scale is incredibly tough and there is a lot of work every night. Going to class is a struggle to stay awake. If you have to take her, good luck
She is a nice person, yet for a First Year Seminar class, there is too much busy work and she takes forever to grade. She is a tough grader. Not my favorite class.
One of the most charming teachers I've ever had. A true joy to have in class. Very much improved my writing abilities. I love Kelly
This was honestly my hardest course freshman year. Expect 2-3 hours of homework most nights and a 400-600 essay per week. Most of the homework is reading or watching videos which is very time confusing.
My only complaint is the amount of homework assigned, but with good time management skills or other classes that aren't too demanding, it's definitely doable! I already feel like a better writer from taking this class. Kelly makes you work for your A, but she's always there to help and make class as fun as possible with her witty jokes!
She's a nice professor and seems to love what she's doing but she is a very tough grader and takes forever to grade papers. If you skip class you're not missing much and the discussion posts are terrible.
She is a nice teacher and her lectures are fine, but the amount of work there is for a 101 class is in absolute joke. Seriously laughable. You turn in a paper you expect to have no homework for the next class right? No, you have a 300 word discussion post. there has yet to be a class where you didn't have some sort of pointless homework before.
She is honestly the worst teacher i have ever had. her lectures aren't bad but they are pointless. she assigns an incredible amount of work for a 101 class. nobody ruins a night with unexpected homework like kelly austin. seriously awful, don't take any of her classes
Kelly Austin is one of my favorite teachers from this semester. She isn't an "easy" professor and you would need to actually try for the grade you want. However, she is very accessible and sometimes cancels class due to migranes which is very nice. She is also very funny, nice, loves it when people participate to any degree.
Do Not Take This Class if you want an English class. This is a field working class with a large amount of homework w/ essays too. There are hours of observations that some working, 18 credit hour taking students do not have the time for. I expected to be writing about different literary texts the other 201 class reads and writes essays about texts
Professor Austin is a very sweet lady who tries hard to connect with students. LOTS of homework, but it's easy points. Hard grader on bigger assignments, especially writing ones (she's an English teacher so what can you expect). Overall good teacher, but no Core 100 class is good, so I'd take her.
Honestly, I really enjoy Professor Austin as a person, she is a very kind and relatable teacher. I would not however, take her class again. She assigns way too many busy work assignments that really hurt your grade if you do not turn them in. Also the project dates are clumped together so if you take other classes your pressed for time on work. :(
terrible.
The best English professor I have ever had. I went into her class with little appreciation for English and writing and ended up a more confident and better writer. If you stick to her assignment guidelines and keep up with the module page you will have no trouble doing well in the class and improving as a writer.
Great personality. She connects with her students and cares, however, there is TONS of homework... busy work. Be prepared for 3 hours of homework per night for her class. There is also lots of outside work for this class. Take with caution!
This class required daily work, at least 2-3 homework assignments per night. Papers had very unclear prompts. I didnt learn much from this class. It was not enjoyable outside of class, though being in class was okay. Overall, shes a lot of work for not a lot of reward.
Amazing teacher. Understand that life happens, if you email her she can give an extension. Respects everyone in the class and is a great listener. A good amount of reading but not that bad most books are 200 or less paper.
Her grading is absolutely awful. There is so much busy work that is absolutely worth nothing, maybe like 20% of the total grade. Frustrating class to take for a first year seminar class. Don't take this course its not worth your time.
Professor Kelly is a real gem. She gets that life happens and if you email her about any struggles she will try her best to accommodate them. I really enjoyed her Growing Pains class. The homework was not too much and the books we read were really interesting. Would definitely take again.
This professor is ALRIGHT at most. If you do not like reading then I would not suggest this professor. Also if your major is 'hard' you will have no time to complete all the busy work she gives out. Homework every night and make sure you know the reading material.
BEST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD! Truly the sweetest woman willing to work with any issues that you might have. I would recommend her to anyone, any day of the week.
Had to read a lot for class discussion which happened 2 times a week and she wanted everyone to participate a few times per class. Overall an easy class and would recommend for a first year seminar because it was practical and applies to everyday life. We read 2 books all semester and one was only 100 pages.
I've taken a few of her classes because she's genuinely just the nicest human being & most understanding professor I've had at Xavier. She is willing to help accommodate students in any way possible. Attendance is technically mandatory but there are assignments you can do to make up for missed classes. A lot of EASY busy work - totally doable.
Do you want to spend hours each night doing pointless middle school work? then take her class!
A lot of work for a required class. Adds to stress because of the amount of reading and writing. Always staying up late to complete assignments because I have other classes I need to work on for my major. Also a hard grader for work that is reflective of your own experiences.
Professor Austin is fun and doesn't make class miserable. There is a lot of work to be done outside of class, which becomes annoying. I had her for FYS: Growing Pains.
I took this course (Growing Pains) as a first year seminar. I would not recommend this class as there is a ton of assignments everyday along with reading before every class. If you're looking for an easy first year seminar do not take this course (especially if your major is already hard).
For everyone saying assignments are too difficult - she gives you so much time to complete them, if you need an extension she is willing to grant one. Communicate with her and she will help you succeed in any area in/outside of her class. She was a great professor who encourages learning - which is literally why you are in college. She's awesome.
She tried really hard to make this class fun but for every book we read, all of the assignments were the same. I can only do speed dating questions about the books so many times. I really wanted to like her but the books are okay at best and the writing assignments were lack luster. I mean we didn't really write anything and its a writing course?
She is not a kind teacher, if you do badly on an assignment she does not care whatsoever. Class is not that hard but if you don't attend it really affects your grade. I wouldn't recommend her for this class but the class itself was not bad.
Professor Austin is very kind, but gives a lot of busy work. I had her for FYS: Growing Pains. The class is mainly based off of discussion posts, reading, and tweeting about what you read. Homework due every class period. I was not a fan, but if you don't mind busy/pointless work, she could be good.
Kelly has easily been one of my favorite professors. Theres homework for every class, but it doesnt take too long. Other than that, theres only 2-3 projects for the class. Kelly was very understanding with deadlines and a fair grader. I took two classes with her and would definitely recommend to anyone.
I had Kelly for FYS: Growing pains and I really enjoyed it. There is work every night but it's typically a short assignment with few large assignments. She's very understanding with due dates and is accessible outside of class.
This class isn't hard. It just has a lot of homework as well as readings. I wouldn't recommend if you have a heavy schedule but it's still a nice class.
I took her Growing Pains class and really enjoyed it. The class itself was very helpful and I learned a lot. We had homework every night but it was typically easy. Much of the homework was busy work, though. I think that she is a good teacher. She cares about her students and will always help you if you need it.
Out of all my classes, this class is the one that I had to devote the most time to. There were multiple assignments that had to be completed every day, and the majority of it was busy work. There were also 3 major assignments crammed into the last couple weeks of school, and we were also the only first year seminar course that had to take a final.
Growing Pains with Kelly is the one of the worst classes you could ever take. There is so much work and it is all busy work You get barely anytime to do you papers or projects and even if you submit the work half the time she won't give you full credit This class overall was awful and I would sit in the class room and count until the class was over
Professor Austin shows no empathy for students who cannot handle her insane work load. We were given multiple written assignments and pages of reading every day. Most of the work you are given is busy work and doesn't teach you anything. I was in the hospital for two weeks and she had no sympathy for my work load once I returned.
Professor Austin's CORE100 class has a lot of daily assignments, but using Unstuck ai and the free textbook made it manageable. While attendance is mandatory, she's understanding with due dates. Overall, a solid first-year seminar that tests time management skills.
4 free absences. Contract grader, so every assignment 3 pts. Semibusy work, homework due every class. She uses scaffolding, so you do small amounts of projects at a time, which does help. 2 books, crammed into a semishort time. No tests. Makes an effort to get to know you. Topics in class have overlap with psych. Ex credit. Drops low grades.
Very hard grader, comments of every hw assignment, hw everday. Will not recieve credit if there is any findings of AI. Gives time for projects in class, and is willing to give help if asked.
Professor Austin has a lot of empathy and is open to answering any questions you may have. Although she's a very nice person, her lectures feel very repetitive, and not a lot of new information is learned. She uses contract grading, and her criteria are outlined so it's simple to get an A as long as you show up and do all of the work.
