Awesome professor! Very interesting and insightful. Gives great lectures and even puts them up online! I'm not bio major and i personally didn't even need a book, as she goes over everything in class that will be on the tests. There is no reason not to get an A in this class, it's super easy and she is very helpful, lots of extra credit too!
This was an Animal Biology class, very interesting course. Dr. Decker was okay, the only down-side was that she didn't do a good job at teaching (reads directly off the powerpoints rather than explain). She is also takes cheating very seriously, so DON'T do it! Also, work hard in lab, it will help you! I got a "B+
She was an alright professor, she read directly from power-point which made it seemed pointless to actually attend class. She will help and answer questions but you really have to reach out. .Like far out.
Her lectures are boring but you don't really have to go to them. Her study guides are exactly what will be on the exams and she allows 1 cheat sheet each. Honestly, I recommend waiting for the study guide before you study for an exam. Study guide is straight out of the book answers. Easy class to pass if you study the study guide.
Know everything on the study guide. The lectures should cover almost every term, and if not, you can ask her during lectures. Attend lectures with the study guides so you can write notes on the terms and concepts. If you study the stuff on the SLO's you will pass. The same goes for lab practicals... know SLO's=Win.
Dr. Decker is incredibly knowledgeable and loves the subject and that really shows. The course is not easy and involves a lot of memorization, but the information given is very rich and relevant. She's easy to approach with questions and help.
A lot of memorization. If you are not good at it, don't take this class. This class is pretty hard. She do not curves at all. Take this class seriously. I don't recommend this teacher.
This instructor is fairly disorganized (jumping from power point to power point) and simply reads you the power points. The midterm study guides are prepared last minute and the process was not well explained at all. She seems to have high expectations based on what she knows as opposed to trying to teach anyone anything. You have to memorize a lot
PowerPoints are just read to the class. The SLOs can only do so much. There is a lot of information and you basically need to memorize everything to be able to answer the short answer questions on the exams.
WHY is she even teaching?? The worst professor here at East Bay. Do not take her.
Horrible teacher. She wasn't very specific on what to study, When you ask her what would be a good idea to focus most on studying, she said "Study everything." Is everything on the exam? No. I ended up studying 'everything' and studied the concepts on the SLOS in depth.... nothing I would study would be on the exam. Ridiculous
The worst professor I've ever encountered! Her lectures are pointless and she mumbles and says "uhhh...." through the whole thing. You never know what info is relevant or what will be on exams. The labs were bad too. I would NEVER take another class with her.
Absolutely a great professor! I'm a health science major and have taken courses previous to this one but this is the first that I enjoyed. She gives reviews after covering each chapter which is really useful. It's a lot of stuff to study and not everything will be on exams but if you study reviews you'll for sure pass. Go to office hours, helpful!
Such a good professor! all you have to do is talk to her and her tests are straight from the study guide she gives you! You have to study but you have every opportunity to do well!
TBH, i am not that great of a science lecture student. However, this teacher makes passing the class mission impossible. I literally passed with the lowest grade possible. Decker is clearly a doctor, not a teacher. She does not get students involved and your whole grade is 90% based off 3 tests. Her lectures are literally pictures from the textbook
What is with all the hate? She was the most easy bio prof I've had. I guess she took the criticism and improved then. Her lectures are on East Bay Replay so you can watch that, and she curves her exams. Explanations were good and she tells you what to focus on for the exams. All the stuff she goes through you can clarify in the book easily.
Literally the easiest prof ever! Her exams are super easy! If you study the slides and the slo's, you will do great on the exams. It's pointless coming to class since she reads directly off the slide, and she does not curve. I feel like the people complaining didn't try hard enough. You have to study, obviously for any class. Take her!
Taking her this summer and at first I got a feeling that she didn't even want to be there, but now I've changed my mind. She do great lectures, and for the test - its mostly based on her lectures rather than the confusing reading - which is a good thing!! Not a bio major (not even close) so her lectures are really helpful!
Professor Decker is a boring instructor. She would just read off of her slides and expect the class to know them all for her exams. Her lectures were long and boring. There is no homework but I would not recommend this professor unless you memorize well.
She saved my life this quarter. Memorizing phylums, classes and orders was hard for me and quite a few other students but she took the time to give students extra help. She responded to every question I asked via email promptly and following a mishap with the syllabus and date of the final she accommodated students with 2 test days. She's great. :)
Professor Decker may be a boring lecturer, but this class was not too bad. Easy if you study her slos because her slos over prepare you for the tests. I got an A on the first test (most people failed but she allowed a retake), B on the second and high C on the final. With a B in lab, I got a B+. Take her if you're dedicated at studying.
Students definitely learn a lot in this course, but it is doable. Dr. Decker divides the course into three parts: cell and molecular, evolution, and ecology. She uses humor, slides, pictures and videos to add interest. Lecture videos help students whose English is not their native language.
Although the material was really straight forward, you still need to dedicate adequate time outside of class and lab in order to do well. 80 percent of the class is based on knowing taxonomy of several animals and their unique characteristics. I learned a lot in this class and having the lectures on east bay replay helped tremendously.
Exams are short and seem easy while taking them. Worth about 30 pts each, but that means you better not mess up on any question. You can study all you want, but if you don't say it how she wants you to say it, she'll dock it as wrong. No idea what she wants. Didn't write the word "particular"? 10% of your test taken off. An A is doable, good luck
She just reads off powerpoints. Horrible professor. Not enthusiastic at all. Very monotone. They only way to pass the class is to memorize. There was no curve when I took the class. Class isn't easy at all. Lectures aren't really helpful.
Kelly Decker is a great biology teacher, she gives study guides for the test so you know what to focus on, her lectures weren't too bad, she often shows helpful videos to help visualize what you are learning. Great teacher over all, take her for animal biology :)
I have taken her before. This was a hard class about a complex topic. Dr. Dekcer made the textbook optional and let us choose any Ecology book. That was the only down side-many chose no book at all and it would have been helpful
Her powerpoints are boring, she just reads off them, she'll occasionally give out quizlets as a way of taking attendance. As long as u turn one in, ur fine. Sometimes she's a real bully to her students. The only way to do well is just listen and do flash cards. The only good thing about her is her lectures are on EB Replay, so you can replay them.
Animal biology with her was great. She has detailed and varied knowledge of the subject material and her lectures are enriched by cool videos. Three tests which aren't too hard. Make sure to devote yourself to learning all the taxa names and relationships. There is a lot of memorizing and you just have to do it if you expect to pass.
She got so excited about the material, she walked out of her sandal once. Best advice: write notes and rewrite them before the next class. Makes studying for the exams easier.
Dr. Decker isn't the best professor I've had or the worst. She's a smart lady and knows her stuff, sometimes she can go over material really fast and isn't clear. But if you speak up and ask her to repeat material she will gladly do so. It's really important to listen to what she says because that's whats on the test. Also use quizlet to study!
She goes off topic way too many times
Study the SLOs and spend lots of extra time in class.
Kelly Decker, she is by far one of the most helpful professors I have had. she makes her class a very warm welcoming enviorment for students to ask questions in addition if you pay attention in her class and read the text just as she says you will have no problem passing
Kelly Decker is a great teacher, I really enjoyed the videos she showed during lecture.
Enjoyed the class
Dr. Kelly isn't the worst nor the best professor I have had. Pretty straight forward class. Listen to her lectures and do the study guides and you should pass the class. She gives 3 exams, which are all based on her lectures, so go to class. Overall, just show up and study and you should do well in her class.
I thought I would not enjoy the taxonomy, but after I got the hang of it, it was fun.
Learned a lot.
Pretty much follows her Powerpoints for the lectures, but her Powerpoints are hard to understand by themselves-- you have to show up for the lecture to understand them. Zero tolerance for phones at all and will ask you to leave if she sees you with yours. Read the chapters and take notes before class, then add to your notes during for best grade.
Last quarter was tough, but Dr. Kelly worked with the class to help everyone come up with learning strategies.
She is hated by many students but I just focused on the SLO'S and got an A on all the exams so, I didn't bother her character. The labs were fun and easy once you understand them. Videos in lectures were helpful. Offers extra credit sometimes so show up in class. Mnemonics really helps with the taxonomy. Study the SLO'S perfectly and you'll get A.
This is a general survey of Ecology. As a class we conducted an experiment to allow us to use the prerequisite statistics. You have to write one small and one large lab report and Dr. Decker is very specific about how that should be done. She is very helpful and makes time to help students. I enjoyed this class and this professor.
I took Dr. Decker for both lecture and lab and it was a real benefit because she would connect lecture concepts during lab in an informal and easygoing way. I really enjoyed learning about the different animal groups. Spelling counts though, so that was a challenge. My favorite part were the animal dissections.
This is one of the first classes i have had here that made me feel like I am in college. I really, really love Animal Biology. I wish more professors were like Professor Decker.
3 Midterms and a final paper. She gives out study guides for every lecture and her exams are fair. Just study her study guides and look over her power points. She's definitely a tough grader though, so just keep that in mind.
Animal Biology is an interesting class, but there is a lot of memorization (something like 76 taxa plus physiology). The course is extremely well-organized with a study guide for each lecture and practice quizlets. Professor Decker is interesting and friendly and occasionally inspirational.
I liked using my statistics in a real experiment, and working together as a class. The field trips were great.
This is the most dreaded class in the biology 1400 series. Its just memorization. She trails off in class, and gets confused. The labs are poorly constructed and not no real organization. It's not challenging is just so boring. She mainly teaches ecology, which show in her lectors. This is the last year of class, no other year will be tortured.
Not a terribly difficult class but need to spend adequate time to really memorize everything. SLO's are the key to success. Memorize and test yourself on them. The lab is pretty easy, taking pictures and memorizing the structures/phylum & class would do. Dr. Decker isn't really the best professor but she's organized at least. Don't miss lecture.
To be honest, she can get on your nerves. Need to average at a 93% on her exams in order to receive an A. She doesn't curve. Her test a decently hard. Make sure her spelling is correct because her powerpoint slides are filled with misspelled terminology. Good luck!
Kelly Decker is a great professor! She's very passionate about what she teaches. You can't go into this class and expect it do the bare minimum and get a good grade. Go to lectures, Do the study guides, study the study guides and you should pass with an A.
Very unorganized labs, that are not step by step. She will dock you points on things she never asked of you on exam questions. Gets an attitude very easily when asked to clarify things.
basically reads off the slides. grading is very tough for no reason. can get snappy at times. felt like she ran out of things for us to do in lab. final exam is nothing like the other tests, completely different format which was a big curveball out of nowhere
Loved the field trips and the experiments.
I had Dr Decker for lab, and she is really passionate about everything she teaches, especially our environment and sustainability. She is incredibly sweet and got to know the people in our class. She explains things really well, and I honestly learned a lot from her. Take her class!
DO NOT TAKE HER, she is the worst lecturer ever, unorganized and when I asked her questions thru email she always said just read the textbook. As a lab prof shes not bad but as a lecturer she's. monotone and slow and talk too much. defiantly has her favorite and she's not that helpful outside of class. always says" you have to depend on your notes"
she in not a good lecturer. she gives you study guides but dont depend on them because her test are way harder. SHES CONFUSING DURING LECTURE AND THE MOST BORING ONE EVER. but honestlyEVERY biology teacher sucks at east bay. she sometimes gets attitude when people ask too much questions during lecture. the class itself is already hard but she sucks
Dr. Decker is a dope lab. instructor. I had her for 1/2 of the semester and she was always willing to answer questions (even stupid ones) and really looked out for us. She's really passionate about the environment and is nice and funny. I literally have no complaint about her nor her class, have her as your lab instructor!
Dr. Decker is very sweet and loves what she teaches! There are quizzes/labs every class time. So make sure you study (keep track of upcoming quizzes/labs on the syllabus) and you should easily pass!
Only take this class if you're used to doing 5 things at once. She makes us do multiple things due at once. For instance, I had to do a book club project meet up each week, hw assignments and quizzes each week watch lecture vids/required vids 2, research project, exams was overwhelming and people emailed her and she claims its not a lot of work.
Professor Decker's class was pretty simple. Lecture wasn't mandatory. The entire class is 3 exams and a final. Power points and information were posted online and she had a study guide for every test. She gives an ENORMOUS amount of extra credit for the final. She is very passionate about the subject and is more than happy to answer any questions.
She's great! She's passionate! She takes serious attendance. I agree with the other rater as saying she does have you doing multiple assignments at once. On the quizzes she does allow you to do them over for a better grade. But if you miss the quiz at 11:59pm she won't let you do it over and that's why I got a B otherwise I would've had an A.
Dr. Decker was great. I am not a BIO major and this class was more than doable. There was no textbook. Only lectures, no PPT so pay attention. 3 tests and a couple extra credit opportunities. Transition online, she met up with us via Blackboards version of zoom. She recorded lectures. She is knowledgeable.
She assigns a lot of video lectures and tedious assignments. Her assignments were formatted terribly, and sometimes her quizzes as well. Few assignments required graphing through excel, which she tries to explain how, but does it poorly. Required "book club" group project and final project is a "pick your own" creative style. No papers.
During a pandemic, shes just completely disappeared. Its like Im taking a Youtube class. Sure she has office hours but its not the same. Why cant you just make synchronous lectures? 94% for an A, 90 for an A- for a biology class. Thats rediculous. The exams contain lots of matching with lots of questions. Will never take this professor again.
The worst. Course work is heavy on projects, assignments, and little things here and there that just make it too much to keep up with the class. She wasnt rude at all. But you shouldnt take this class in addition to 4+ classes. If you must, save it for a 2-3 class semester.
(Summer) A lot of work, but a lot of knowledge earned. Unlike many teachers just giving lectures or credits without really teaching, this teacher makes you work on homework, understand what you're doing, and each homework can be used as personal note to pass the exams. Her teaching system is well done, I approve.
She is not on top of her things, dose not lecture. She yells at people when and tries to pick on people, made all my classmates uncomfortable. Her exams are extremely hard with no study guide or anything. Heavily dependent on book and teaching yourself. She is no help at all.
She is rude and very harsh very her words. She will try to pick on you regardless of you doing good or bad. She is prejudice and favors her own kind and doesn't like anyone else. She made many students of color very uncomfortable. DO NOT TAKE HER.
I don't like science but this class was surprisingly fun in my opinion. Everything was straight forward and if you take good notes on the lectures you should do fine on the exams and in general the class!
This professor is not bad. She makes students learn. That is supposed to be the way college is.
It was OK overall. i was not pleased with how the 3 exams were laid out. In this class, you read a lot, watch many videos, then turn notes in. The extra videos she gives are required for u to take notes. The exams did not really associate w/ the textbook(required) + vid lectures covered. You can use your notes on exams, but it doesnt really help :/
This professor was extremely rude toward my mental health. I asked for some support on an assignment, but they said that "everyone goes through these things" and belittled how I felt. They always belittled anything a student tried to ask for support on due to health issues, emergencies, and/or mental health. Glad I got through it though.
This class consisted of watching videos and taking notes and being graded by them. Each week we had to turn in notes and a quiz related to what we read. There were a big load of assignment throughout the module but totally doable if you stay in task. Assignments are easy but sometimes can be a lot depending the week. Totally recommend.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU DON'T NEED TO. She is rude and inflexible. I had problems with her all semester; she is condescending and mean. I had to take this class for my major, unfortunately. The class itself wasn't difficult, but the professor did not teach. We taught ourselves basically everything by being forced to read the textbook.
The professor's lazy and you will have to watch and take notes on the lectures on your own time. The videos are very long, anywhere from 40 minutes up to an hour on average. There are usually multiple videos. In class, all we do is watch/give presentations. We have to write down two questions and then turn that paper in for participation grade.
[ENVT 101 summer]The class is doable. It was just time consuming because each week consisted of reading, taking notes and a quiz. There were 3 exams. All were non-comprehensive and open notes. Though I learned a lot because of the independent studies, I dislike the book. Each chapter had a YouTube video embedded and included plenty of errors.
Absolutely horrible experience, she does not care about her students, she missed an entire month of class and the next time we had her was the day of the exam. On the exams there's material she has never covered on either lecture or videos.
[BIOL106] The class is basically just taking notes on the videos and reading the book, with a quiz that is open note&book. After every module, there is a non-cumulative exam (open note) and a field assignment where you have to go on a hike. Professor Decker is very nice and is fast with answering emails, along with willing to help you if you need.
This class was to be hybrid, in-person and asyn but it ended up being trihybrid, in-person, asyn, and syn. There's 3 exams which were hard as the class average was a C. She makes us work on book clubs and we have to meet 5 times through zoom and present. She allows up to 3 attempts on the quizzes and you have to turn in hand-written notes.
3 TESTS which mess up grade PLEASE STUDY FOR TESTS !!. No extra credit. 1-2 hours a lecture a week online. proffesor is lazy and just posts automatic reminders. Beware that she does book club meetings with classmates from your class based on a book via zoom . Long homework and so unnecessary long lectures which she just reads off the slides.
This professor uses a long textbook and is not caring for students, she just posts automatic assignment each week which concludes a long quiz and a LONG reading chapter (2-3) chapters a week which is so long and exhausting. SHE ONLY ACCEPTS HANDWRITTEN NOTES to prove u actually read the chapters ! And grades u on this especially if notes are small.
ENSC 241 is a LAB that can only be taken with ENSC 240. I recommend you to always stay on top of things in this lab. Although it is asynchronous, it is so easy to fall behind. My advice to get an A is to stay persistent, ask questions to clarify but most importantly is to stay positive since at times this class with ENSC 240 can be overwhelming.
Had her online synchronous class -- only met in-person twice + a few Zoom meetings for the book club. Her lecture vids are LONG and unorganized. Every week you have to watch 1-2 hours of vids to take notes. Combine that with the reading and prep you have to do for the book club, it's a LOT of work. Exams are like the quizzes though, which is ok.
Relatively easy class, especially for a lab. I honestly would recommend even though I don't really like the teacher. The assignments are, for the most part, easy and straight to the point. However, she is pretty picky about her grading of the projects, so don't expect her to go easy on you even if you think you did a good job.
I do not like the professor she is rude and she is prejudiced she even said that my environment that I'm taking which is environmental science as my major and she said it was not thriving which made very upset because there's a lot of students who major in environmental sciences can do a lot of stuff that they can do but overall she's not helpful.
The other reviews left for this professor might scare you to not take her class, but I took her summer online environmental class and it was FINE. Yes, there is a lot of homework and note taking, but if you are good with your time it is very manageable. Did not interrupt my summer plans at all or my work life. If you need the class, just take it.
Lectures were good but there are many and all the notes assignments (which are the majority of assignments), have to be hand written.
Your notes have to be handwritten which gets annoying as the semester goes on. It'll generally be 3 - 4 videos, sometimes more a week. Weekly Tests are easy and you get 3 tries. Mid and final exam are just questions from the tests. Biggest assignment were the 3 hikes you go on. Go to a different environment and take an hour hike and snap 10 pics.
